Att vänta i kö är något som de flesta människor inte tycker om, speciellt långa köer där väntan drar ut på tiden. I ett försök att minska väntetiden för kunder har företag börjat utveckla nya typer av köhanteringssystem vilka stödjer smartphonebaserade nummerlappar. Företagen erbjuder smartphonebaserade nummerlappar på olika sätt; antigen via sms eller en mobilapp. De smartphonebaserade nummerlapparna ger användarna, i tillägg till den vanliga funktionalitet som traditionella köhanteringssystem har, möjlighet att bland annat få uppdateringar om kön, ansluta sig till en kö utan att fysiskt vara på plats och att informera systemet om att de lämnar kön.Syftet med studien var att undersöka om smartphonebaserade nummerlappar påverkar kundernas kundnöjdhet jämfört med traditionella system. Det ansågs finnas ett behov av att undersöka detta eftersom köhanteringssystem som stödjer smartphonebaserade nummerlappar är relativt nya och att det inte har påträffats någon forskning som undersöker de mobila nummerlapparnas påverkan på kundnöjdheten. Den fråga som ställdes var: Påverkar en smartphonebaserad nummerlappsapp kundens kundnöjdhet i förhållande till ett traditionellt system?Studien använde en experimentell strategi för att besvara frågeställningen. Ett fältexperiment genomfördes i studentexpeditionen vid Högskolan i Borås där besökarna fick välja en mobilnummerlappsapp eller en pappersnummerlapp. Efter att besökarens betjäntas i kassan erbjöds denne att besvara en enkät om kundnöjdhet. Resultaten från enkäten användes för att beräkna en kundnöjdhetspoäng för respektive respondent och för att jämföra svaren från grupperna med olika nummerlappstyper. Även gruppernas medelkundnöjdhetspoäng beräknades och jämfördes med hjälp av independent samples t-test.Resultaten i studien visade att appanvändarna var signifikant mer nöjda än pappersanvändarna i den totala jämförelsen. För de enskilda frågorna visade resultatet att kundnöjdheten i vissa fall påverkades positiv men även att kundnöjdheten i vissa fall inte påverkades alls. Slutsatsen som drogs var att en smartphonebaserade nummerlappsapp påverkar kundnöjdheten positivt i förhållande till traditionella system.

Waiting in lines is something that most people do not like, especially waiting in long queues where the waiting drags on. In an attempt to reduce the waiting time for customers companies have begun to develop new types of queue management systems which support smartphone based queue tickets. The companies offer the smartphone based queue tickets in different ways, either by SMS or a mobile application. ▼ Timeliness in delivering packets for delay-sensitive applications is an important QoS (Quality of Service) measure in many systems, notably those that need to provide real-time performance. In such systems, if delay-sensitive traffic is delivered to the destination beyond the deadline, then the packets will be rendered useless and dropped after received at the destination. Bandwidth that is already scarce and shared between network nodes is wasted in relaying these expired packets. This thesis proposes that a deterministic per-hop delay can be achieved by using a dynamic queue threshold concept to bound delay of each node. A deterministic per-hop delay is a key component in guaranteeing a deterministic end-to-end delay. The research aims to develop a generic approach that can constrain network delay of delay-sensitive traffic in a dynamic network. Two adaptive queue management schemes, namely, DTH (Dynamic THreshold) and ADTH (Adaptive DTH) are proposed to realize the claim. Both DTH and ADTH use the dynamic threshold concept to constrain queuing delay so that bounded average queuing delay can be achieved for the former and bounded maximum nodal delay can be achieved for the latter. DTH is an analytical approach, which uses queuing theory with superposition of N MMBP-2 (Markov Modulated Bernoulli Process) arrival processes to obtain a mapping relationship between average queuing delay and an appropriate queuing threshold, for queue management. While ADTH is an measurement-based algorithmic approach that can respond to the time-varying link quality and network dynamics in wireless ad hoc networks to constrain network delay. It manages a queue based on system performance measurements and feedback of error measured against a target delay requirement. Numerical analysis and Matlab simulation have been carried out for DTH for the purposes of validation and performance analysis. While ADTH has been evaluated in NS-2 simulation and implemented in a multi-hop wireless ad hoc network testbed for performance analysis. Results show that DTH and ADTH can constrain network delay based on the specified delay requirements, with higher packet loss as a trade-off.

▼ The Internet has been more and more intensively used in recent years. Although network infrastructure has been regularly upgraded, and the ability to manage heavy traffic greatly increased, especially on the core networks, congestion never ceases to appear, as the amount of traffic that flow on the Internet seems to be increasing at an even faster rate. Thus, congestion control mechanisms play a vital role in the functioning of the Internet. Active Queue Management (AQM) is a popular type of congestion control mechanism that is implemented on gateways (most notably routers), which can predict and avoid the congestion before it happens. When properly configured, AQMs can effectively reduce the congestion, and alleviate some of the problems such as global synchronisation and unfairness to bursty traffic. However, there are still many problems regarding AQMs. Most of the AQM schemes are quite sensitive to their parameters setting, and these parameters may be heavily dependent on the network traffic profile, which the administrator may not have intensive knowledge of, and is likely to change over time. When poorly configured, many AQMs perform no better than the basic drop-tail queue. There is currently no effective method to compare the performance of these AQM algorithms, caused by the parameter configuration problem. In this research, the aim is to propose a new analytical model, which mainly uses discrete-time queueing theory. A novel transient modification to the conventional equilibrium-based method is proposed, and it is utilised to further develop a dynamic interactive model of responsive traffic and bottleneck queues. Using step-by-step analysis, it represents the bursty traffic and oscillating queue length behaviour in practical network more accurately. It also provides an effective way of predicting the behaviour of a TCP-AQM system, allowing easier parameter optimisation for AQM schemes. Numerical solution using MATLAB and software simulation using NS-2 are used to extensively validate the proposed models, theories and conclusions.

▼ The dissertation presents a connected vehicle based traffic signal control model (CVTSCM) for signalized arterials. The model addresses different levels of traffic congestion starting with the initial deployment of connected vehicle technologies focusing on two modules created in CVTSCM. For near/under-saturated intersections, an arterial-level traffic progression optimization model (ALTPOM) is being proposed. ALTPOM improves traffic progression by optimizing offsets for an entire signalized arterial simultaneously. To optimize these offsets, splits of coordinated intersections are first adjusted to balance predicted upcoming demands of all approaches at individual intersections. An open source traffic simulator was selected to implement and evaluate the performance of ALTPOM. The case studies field signal timing plans were coordinated and optimized using TRANSYT-7F as the benchmark. ALTPOM was implemented with connected vehicles penetration rates at 25% and 50%, ALTPOM significantly outperforms TRANSYT-7F with at least 26.0% reduction of control delay (sec/vehicle) and a 4.4% increase of throughput for both directions of major and minor streets. This technique differs from traditional traffic coordination which prioritizes major street traffic, and thereby generally results in degrading performance on minor streets. ALTPOM also provides smooth traffic progression for the coordinated direction with little impact on the opposite direction. The performance of ALTPOM improves as the penetration rate of connected vehicles increases. For saturated/oversaturated conditions, two queue length management based Active Traffic Management (ATM) strategies are proposed, analytically investigated, and experimentally validated. The first strategy distributes as much green time as possible for approaches with higher saturation discharge rate in order to reduce delay. For the second approach, green times are allocated to balance queue lengths of major and minor streets preventing queue spillback or gridlock. Both strategies were formulated initially using uniform arrival and departure, and then validated using field vehicle trajectory data. After validation of the modules, the effectiveness of CVTSCM is proven. Then, conclusions and recommendations for future researches are presented at the end. With the explosion of delay-sensitive applications in the Internet (i.e., online gaming and VoIP), latency becomes a major issue for the development of wireless technology. Taking advantage of the significant decline in memory prices, industrialists equip the network devices with larger buffering capacities to improve the network throughput by limiting packets drops. Over-buffering results in increasing the time that packets spend in the queues and, thus, introducing more latency in networks. This phenomenon is known as “bufferbloat”. While throughput is the dominant performance metric, latency also has a huge impact on user experience not only for real-time applications but also for common applications like web browsing, which is sensitive to latencies in order of hundreds of milliseconds. Concerns have arisen about designing sophisticated queue management schemes to mitigate the effects of such phenomenon. My thesis research aims to solve bufferbloat problem in both traditional half-duplex and cutting-edge full-duplex wireless systems by reducing delay while maximizing wireless links utilization and fairness. Our work shed lights on buffer management algorithms behavior in wireless networks and their ability to reduce latency resulting from excessive queuing delays inside oversized static network buffers without a significant loss in other network metrics. First of all, we address the problem of buffer management in wireless full-duplex networks by using Wireless Queue Management (WQM), which is an active queue management technique for wireless networks. Our solution is based on Relay Full-Duplex MAC (RFD-MAC), an asynchronous media access control protocol designed for relay full-duplexing. Compared to the default case, our solution reduces the end-to-end delay by two orders of magnitude while achieving similar throughput in most of the cases. In the second part of this thesis, we propose a novel design called “LearnQueue” based on reinforcement learning that can effectively control the latency in wireless networks. LearnQueue adapts quickly and intelligently to changes in the wireless environment using a sophisticated reward structure. Testbed results prove that LearnQueue can guarantee low latency while preserving throughput. ▼ Esta dissertação abordou o tema gestão da fila sob a perspectiva da cultura organizacional. Teve como objeto de estudo a Agência Campo Grande RJ, do Banco do Brasil, localizada na Zona Oeste da cidade do Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Seu objetivo geral consistiu em interpretar e/ou investigar, na rotina diária, como a cultura (ou subcultura) organizacional está influenciando a gestão das percepções nas filas de espera de uma agência bancária. Como objetivos específicos procurou: verificar se há aplicação, na prática, da teoria existente sobre a gestão da percepção do cliente na fila de espera; apontar o tempo de espera como um atributo que precisa merecer atenção especial dos gestores das instituições financeiras; vivenciar ou experimentar, no cotidiano, o desconforto da espera numa fila; compilar as informações obtidas sobre o assunto; e, por fim, propor sugestões para, quando não for possível a redução ou eliminação, mitigar os efeitos negativos no cliente que espera na fila. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa foi classificada como exploratória, quanto aos fins, e bibliográfica, documental, de estudo de caso e de campo, quanto aos meios. No trabalho de campo, utilizou-se um método com intenção etnográfica, onde o pesquisador fez uma imersão no dia-a-dia do grupo pesquisado, no contexto onde o fenômeno social acontecia, com a finalidade de compreender o chamado ponto de vista nativo, através do processo da observação participante e da entrevista semi-estruturada. Os dados provenientes da observação participante, inclusive foto retirada do ambiente, foram registrados no diário de campo do pesquisador. Os provenientes das entrevistas, realizadas com os 14 funcionários do atendimento (caixas e atendentes), foram gravados e transcritos em sua totalidade. Os dados obtidos foram, então, submetidos à análise de conteúdo (sem o auxílio de software), seguindo rotina definida. Foi apreendido, através da análise do discurso, que: sob o prisma da gestão da fila, há ausência de distrações que entretenham o consumidor, que há recursos que não estão atendendo aos consumidores à vista deles e que há esperas solitárias; sob o prisma da cultura organizacional, o estresse, o espírito individualista, a impunidade, o culto ao estrangeiro e o apego à norma estão entre os traços culturais percebidos no Banco do Brasil que podem guardar alguma relação com a gestão da fila. Como considerações e conclusões ficou evidente que não existe na cultura do banco uma preocupação com a gestão das percepções dos que esperam na fila; verificou-se uma quase completa ignorância, por parte dos atendentes, dos conhecimentos existentes a cerca da gestão das percepções nas filas; registrou-se que a pesquisa não deixou marcada nos seus resultados a questão da dualidade; a pesquisa on line demonstrou, mas foi na vivência do trabalho etnográfico que ficou bem caracterizado, que a espera na fila é fator de grande insatisfação por parte dos clientes. ▼ Rings are often preferred technology for networks as ring networks can virtually create fully connected mesh networks efficiently and they are also easy to manage. However, providing fair service to all the stations on the ring is not always easy to achieve. In order to capitalize on the advantages of ring networks, new buffer insertion techniques, such as Spatial Reuse Protocol (SRP), were introduced in early 2000s. As a result, a new standard known as IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring was defined in 2004 by the IEEE Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) Working Group. Since then two addenda have been introduced; namely, IEEE 802.17a and IEEE 802.17b in 2006 and 2010, respectively. During this standardization process, weighted fairness and queue management schemes were proposed to be used in the standard. As shown in this dissertation, these schemes can be applied to solve the fairness issues noted widely in the research community as radical changes are not practical to introduce within the context of a standard. In this dissertation, the weighted fairness aspects of IEEE 802.17 RPR (in the aggressive mode of operation) are studied; various properties are demonstrated and observed via network simulations, and additional improvements are suggested. These aspects have not been well studied until now, and can be used to alleviate some of the issues observed in the fairness algorithm under some scenarios. Also, this dissertation focuses on the RPR Medium Access Control (MAC) Client implementation of the IEEE 802.17 RPR MAC in the aggressive mode of operation and introduces a new active queue management scheme for ring networks that achieves higher overall utilization of the ring bandwidth with simpler and less expensive implementation than the generic implementation provided in the standard. The two schemes introduced in this dissertation provide performance comparable to the per destination queuing implementation, which yields the best achievable performance at the expense of the cost of implementation. In addition, till now the requirements for sizing secondary transit queue of IEEE 802.17 RPR stations (in the aggressive mode of operation) have not been properly investigated. The analysis and suggested improvements presented in this dissertation are then supported by performance evaluation results and theoretical calculations. Last, but not least, the impact of using different capacity links on the same ring has not been investigated before from the ring utilization and fairness points of view. ▼ With the rapid proliferation of the WWW, the Internet has seen enormous growth in both the demand for access from its users and in the demand for new services from its applications. This dissertation focuses on these two important challenges to today's Internet: supporting an explosion in the number of users and supporting a myriad of new applications which require more out of the network than the best-effort service that the Internet currently provides. The first half of this dissertation focuses on the problem of maximizing network efficiency in times of extremely heavy congestion. Over the last decade, TCP congestion control has been instrumental in allowing the network to deliver service in times of high demand. Through analysis, simulation, and experimentation, this dissertation uncovers a number of significant weaknesses in TCP's congestion control algorithm and in current active queue management mechanisms such as RED. With additional growth in demand, these weaknesses are shown to severely degrade network efficiency by driving up packet loss rates in the network. To address these shortcomings, several new queue management (Adaptive RED, BLUE) and congestion control algorithms (SUBTCP) are proposed and evaluated. These algorithms are shown to eliminate packet loss and maximize link utilization much more effectively than TCP and current active queue management algorithms can. In addition to packet loss, another problem with today's congestion control and queue management algorithms is that they only deliver applications a single service, best-effort. As the need for new services has grown, the inability to provide service differentiation across flows beyond best-effort service has become problematic. The second half addresses the problem of supporting additional services across the Internet. In particular, these chapters focus on building scalable, deployable mechanisms for supporting bandwidth guarantees across the Internet based on simple priority mechanisms as outlined by the Differentiated Services working group of the IETF. Using minor extensions to the queue management (Enhanced RED) and congestion control algorithms in place today, these mechanisms provide applications more predictable behavior out of the network and enable the deployment of a large number of bandwidth-sensitive applications. ▼ To support the myriad of envisioned communication products of the future, there is a need to develop a network infrastructure that can provide larger bandwidth, with better control of quality of service (QoS). However, with increasing demand for applications running over packet networks, congestion at the intermediate nodes (e.g., routers and switches) can be a serious problem. Consequences include long delays, large delay variation and high packet loss rates. Different solutions requiring varying levels of modification to the currently used algorithms have been proposed both for responsive (e.g., TCP) and unresponsive (e.g., UDP) protocols. However, most of the solutions are either too complicated to implement in real life or not general enough to be applicable to an arbitrary network topology. In this thesis, we investigate two mechanisms - active queue management (AQM), and scheduling - that can improve QoS in the packet networks. AQM techniques attempt to prevent congestion and regulate the queue length by sending congestion signals (i.e., dropping and/or marking packets) in a proactive manner, which would eventually cause the senders to decrease their sending rates. We use an analytic model derived for TCP in the literature to develop an AQM scheme that not only controls the queue length at the intermediate nodes but also distributes the resources fairly between the users. We present two different schemes that have different levels of complexity and performance. We also propose a distributed networking scheme that improves the performance of our new AQM algorithms. Although AQM schemes work well with responsive protocols such as TCP, the performance degrades for unresponsive protocols since unresponsive protocols do not change their packet sending rate in response to the congestion notifications sent by the network. Scheduling algorithms can regulate both responsive and unresponsive flows and can also provide guarantees on some QoS parameters, such as latency and fairness. We propose a new scheduling algorithm that can guarantee a better latency and fairness bound than the previous schemes with a similar complexity. This new scheme uses different queues for each round to simplify the common sorting problem with the scheduling schemes. Also a new notion, virtual round, is used to time-stamp incoming packets. ▼ Although work has been done on a wide variety of fields in multi-criteria decision analysis, no literature was found that has specifically studied the development of a spent nuclear fuel (SNF) allocation queue strategy to maximize value to decision maker (DM) based on multiple objectives (allocation queue will be mostly used in this document as a shortened version of this, but allocation queue and allocation queue refer to this same thing). In this document, the DM is the person or persons who ultimately decide what allocation queue is selected. Previous work by Petersen [1] researched optimizing the order in which SNF is removed from nuclear reactor sites with the goal of reducing the number of years after all reactors on a site shut down by when all fuel is cleared from a site. This research proposal seeks to build on those methods to optimize the allocation queue by employing multiple criteria, because the development of allocation strategies for clearing nuclear reactor sites is expected to depend upon several other factors in addition to minimizing the number of Shutdown Reactor Years (SRY). Shutdown reactor years are the cumulative number of years that reactor sites have SNF remaining on-site after they are shut down summed over the entire reactor fleet.In this dissertation, a new model has been developed with the ability to consider a multiple number of DM’s preferences when developing an optimal allocation queue (in terms of maximizing value to the DM). Unlike traditional multi-objective evaluations where potential allocation strategies are developed manually, and the results compared after analyzing each scenario separately, the model was developed to search for optimum allocation strategies based on DM’s preferences. A Chebyshev integer programming method was developed for this application and the results herein provided show that the new model, denoted as the Tractable Validation Model for Value (TVMV), performs as intended.Additionally, major assumptions that affect the TVMV were explored to investigate the implications of different system assumptions. These parameters include the year in which acceptance from reactor sites begins, the maximum fleet-wide acceptance rate per year, the maximum number of canisters that can be accepted from operating or shutdown reactors in each year, and the assumed storage and transportation cask thermal limits.

▼ Managing traffic during oversaturated conditions is a current challenge for practitioners due to the lack of adequate tools that can handle such situations. Unlike under-saturated conditions, operation of traffic signal systems during congestion requires careful consideration and analysis of the underlying causes of the congestion before developing mitigation strategies. The objectives of this research are to provide a practical guidance for practitioners to identify oversaturated scenarios and to develop a multi-objective methodology for selecting and evaluating mitigation strategy/ or combinations of strategies based on a guiding principles. The research focused on traffic control strategies that can be implemented by traffic signal systems. The research did not considered strategies that deals with demand reduction or seek to influence departure time choice, or route choice. The proposed timing methodology starts by detecting networkâ s critical routes as a necessary step to identify the traffic patterns and potential problematic scenarios. A wide array of control strategies are defined and categorized to address oversaturation problematic scenarios. A timing procedure was then developed using the principles of oversaturation timing in cycle selection, split allocation, offset design, demand overflow, and queue allocation in non-critical links. Three regimes of operation were defined and considered in oversaturation timing: (1) loading, (2) processing, and (3) recovery. The research also provides a closed-form formula for switching control plans during the oversaturation regimes. The selection of optimal control plan is formulated as linear integer programming problem. Microscopic simulation results of two arterial test cases revealed that traffic control strategies developed using the proposed framework led to tangible performance improvements when compared to signal control strategies designed for operations in under-saturated conditions. Depuis quelques années le trafic de l'internet mobile ne cesse d'augmenter. Cette croissance soutenue est liée à plusieurs facteurs, parmi lesquels l'évolution des terminaux, la grande diversité des services et des applications disponibles et le déploiement des nouvelles technologies d'accès radio mobile (3G/4G). À cet égard, le standard 3GPP pour les réseaux LTE propose une architecture offrant une gestion fine de la QoS (par flux). Ce modèle, hérité des réseaux mobiles traditionnels orientés connexion, soulève des problèmes en termes de scalabilité, efficacité et performances. Les travaux entrepris dans cette thèse ont pour objectif principal de proposer des solutions plus simples et moins coûteuses pour la gestion de la QoS dans les réseaux mobiles. À cette fin, à l'issue d'une étude et de l'évaluation de l'impact de la signalisation associée au modèle de QoS standard, deux modèles alternatifs ont été proposés. Nous proposons tout d'abord un modèle basée sur les mécanismes IP inspiré de l'approche DiffServ (par agrégat) largement étudié dans les réseaux IP fixes. Ce modèle fournit une gestion de la QoS simple, efficiente et rentable, tout en garantissant des performances équivalentes au modèle standard. Cependant, elle nécessite une remise à niveau de tous les eNB, et donc une longue phase de transition. En conséquence, nous proposons SloMo qui vise à améliorer l'expérience des clients mobiles, mais avec un objectif de déploiement plus rapide. SloMo est une solution de gestion implicite de la QoS depuis un point unique situé sur le chemin des communications. SloMo exploite la dynamique instaurée par le mécanisme de contrôle de flux de TCP. Il vise à recréer un goulot d'étranglement dynamique dans un équipement contrôlé par l'opérateur lorsque les points de congestion réels ne sont pas accessibles. Une fois ce goulot d'étranglement déporté, il est alors aisé d'effectuer une gestion de la qualité IP classique dans l'équipement supportant Slo-Mo.

The mobile data landscape is changing rapidly and mobile operators are today facing the daunting challenge of providing cheap and valuable services to ever more demanding customers. As a consequence, cost reduction is actively sought by operators as well as Quality of Service (QoS) preservation. Current 3GPP standards for LTE/EPC networks offer a fine tuning QoS (per-flow level), which inherits many characteristics of legacy telco networks. In spite of its good performance, such a QoS model reveals costly and cumbersome and finally, it remains very rarely deployed, thereby giving way to basic best-effort hegemony. ▼ Wireless networks have enjoyed the exponential development, and wireless communication has become an essential part of modern life. Many new wireless applications demand higher speed and consume more energy. However, wireless devices are always powered by batteries, which have limited life time and constrain the use of wireless devices and the growth of wireless networks. Energy efficiency becomes an important issue in wireless networks. We study the energy efficiency in the IEEE 802.11 based WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) and the third generation cellular system UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), in which the basic mechanism is to put a mobile device into a low power consumption state when it is idle and wake it up periodically to transmit/receive traffic. In WLANs, the study is focused on the MAC (Media Access Control) sublayer. Two queueing models for the power management mechanisms in an infrastructure network are proposed: the M/G/1 queue with bulk service and the D/G/1 queue. Based on the analytical and simulation results, suggestions are given about how to optimally configure the power management parameters. We also propose the enhanced power management schemes for both infrastructure and independent networks, which outperform the original schemes based on our analysis and simulation. In UMTS, the impacts of Discontinuous Reception (DRX) mechanism and inactivity timer are studied. The simulation of the performance of power saving mechanism is carried out by inputting several typical traffic models specified by 3GPP (third generation partnership project). From the results that different traffic models demand different optimal parameters, we propose to adaptively configure the DRX cycle and inactivity timer parameters based on real-time measurements. ▼ O presente trabalho desenvolveu-se no âmbito de um projeto de dissertação do 2º semestre, do 2º ano, do Mestrado em Engenharia Industrial. Este projeto foi desenvolvido em contexto hospitalar e teve como objetivo a aplicação de um sistema de gestão de filas de espera num Centro Hospitalar. É notório que as falhas verificadas na gestão hospitalar estão normalmente relacionadas com a falta de informação e a deficiente gestão de recursos. Estes aspetos são determinantes para a gestão de qualquer entidade organizacional. Foi a partir deste princípio que se abordou o sistema de filas de espera num Centro Hospitalar, de forma a proporcionar aos gestores do Hospital informações importantes para fundamentar as suas decisões. As medidas a tomar devem enquadrar-se no espírito da fundação do SNS ao mesmo tempo que se adaptam aos dias atuais, com o objetivo da prestação de um serviço com mais qualidade e de referência, e economicamente sustentável. Assim sendo, o presente projeto foi desenvolvido nas Consultas Externas III do Centro Hospitalar do Alto Ave – Unidade de Guimarães e foca-se na procura de diversas propostas de melhoria de forma a prestar serviços com mais qualidade, no que diz respeito ao sistema de gestão de filas de espera num Centro Hospitalar. Para os problemas encontrados foram propostas soluções de melhoria contínua orientadas para os sistemas de gestão de filas de espera. As propostas não foram ainda aplicadas devido a alguns fatores, como o tempo e os recursos financeiros necessários, não se descurando, no entanto, a possibilidade de serem implementadas num futuro próximo. Através da aplicação das propostas de melhoria sugeridas, poderá existir diversos ganhos ao nível da redução de tempos de espera e consequente redução nas filas de espera, um aumento da eficiência das tarefas, uma melhor organização do espaço físico, assim como eliminação de desperdícios. ▼ A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a wireless network without a fixed infrastructure. Due to the mobile nature of the nodes, connectivity between the nodes is not fixed and routing is an important problem for these types of networks and more complex compared to their counterpart in wired networks. Multipath routing is a concept in which more than one path is used to transfer packets of data between source-destination pairs. Multiple paths can be used either as alternate (backup) paths in case of failures or simultaneously by splitting the traffic over multiple paths to balance the network load. The main goal of this research is to develop a solution methodology to the routing and scheduling problems in MANETs via distributed algorithms to select traffic flow to be transmitted and the type of routing – unipath or multipath – to be used at each decision point. In this work, multipath routing in MANETs is analyzed, and the decisions for selecting the paths to be used among the available paths and determining the allocations to different paths are made. A centralized routing and scheduling problem has been formulated and sample cases have been solved using the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) to help propose a heuristic for the distributed problem. A node-independent multipath routing (NIMR) algorithm which allows decision making at intermediate nodes is proposed. The node-independent multipath routing algorithm is compared with a path delay based source-based unipath (SBU) routing algorithm. The NIMR algorithm performs up to 7.12% better than the SBU routing algorithm on the average. However, the spread of the data shows that the SBU routing algorithm still performs better than the NIMR algorithm in 15% to 40% of the replications. Based on these results, a hybrid algorithm which switches between the unipath and multipath routing algorithms based on the local information of the nodes is proposed. The NIMR, SBU and hybrid algorithms are compared in terms of average packet delay via hypothesis tests. When the NIMR and hybrid algorithms are used, an improvement ratio with respect to the SBU algorithm which differs from zero statistically is obtained in most of the cases for networks with more than 15 nodes. Also, for networks with more than 20 nodes, a negative improvement ratio which differs from zero statistically is obtained when the hybrid algorithm is compared with the NIMR algorithm indicating that the NIMR algorithm performs better than the hybrid algorithm. The NIMR algorithm is also compared with five routing algorithms adapted from the literature for different size networks and mobility scenarios in terms of end-to-end delay, throughput, and overhead of the routing algorithm. In general, the NIMR algorithm performs up to 24.052% better than the unipath routing algorithms and 37.919% better than the source based multipath algorithms in terms of average packet delay.
