▼ Working at the intersection of queer studies and public history, Claiming History, Claiming Rights: Queer Discourses of History and Politics focuses on queer archives in the United States from 1970 to the present. The project contends that through the process of claiming and narrating a history, LGBTQ groups constitute and redefine the communities they historicize. At stake in this dissertation is a critical understanding of how public history and political activism are mutually reinforcing projects. This project contends that queer archives engage in the study of what might be termed "politically dangerous" sexual practices. Through their historical interventions, these archives challenge prevailing notions of sexuality and identity, and serve as sites of legitimacy for marginalized members of the gay and lesbian communities. Queer archives also engage in a "politics of the body," and become sites not just of historic preservation, but of political activism around sexual rights as well. The first chapter, "Dangerous Pleasures and Radical Redefinitions: The Lesbian Herstory Archive and the Debates Over Lesbian Identity," examines New York's Lesbian Herstory Archives (LHA), founded in 1973, and focuses on the ways in which the Archives worked not just to collect and preserve lesbian history, but also to renegotiate the very definition of lesbianism itself. The second chapter, "Remembering for Our Lives: The Impact of the AIDS Crisis on Queer Public History," focuses on San Francisco's GLBT Historical Society to examine how AIDS affected what was collected, what was saved, and how stories were told. The third chapter, "'Do Not Feel Shame for How I Live': Archiving Queer Black Life," focuses on the more recently founded Black Gay and Lesbian Archives, and examines the archive as a response and reaction to the widespread invisibility of black queer life. The final chapter, "Queer Discourses in the Political Sphere," analyzes how organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign make political claims using specific notions of queer history and identity. This project contends that the rhetoric surrounding issues like gay marriage privileges a particular conception of the queer subject, and renders invisible those who do not conform to this identity. ▼ Because contemporary network science is predicated on the assumption that similarity breeds connection, it transforms what seems to be an open web into poorly gated communities that propagate already-existing forms of prejudice and discrimination. If the algorithmic fabric of social media platforms pushes people with the same views and interests towards each other, what does this mean for queer individuals in Beirut inhabiting a city whose very urban fabric segregates and limits their interaction in public space? What possibilities can the digital realm provide queer lives in a cyberspace unhinged by the geography of residence and the materiality of the body? I attempt to answer those research questions by relying on Sara Ahmed’s Queer phenomenology (2006) and on Wendy Hui Kyong Chun’s (2016) concept of “homophily”. Those theoretical lenses will guide my use of auto-ethnography and close visual analysis to explore the outputs and social media strategies of two case studies of visual activism in Lebanon: Beirut By Dyke and Kikafilmadina. My personal experience as a member of civil society groups in Beirut and my positionality as the creator of Beirut By Dyke orient me, to borrow Sara Ahmed’s term, towards these pages as cultural objects. The concept of the social media accounts, which revolves around the narrativization of queer inhabitance in space, propels me toward Sara Ahmed’s theory around sexuality as residence. Conversely, the social impact generated by both social media accounts on collective imaginations and social participation in cyber and physical space leads to me to question how “homophily” (Chun 2016) can be used to challenge the neoliberal assumptions it was built on. My aim is to counter existing literature around gender and digital culture whose understandable focus on the capitalistic and behaviorally predictive valence of social platforms is grim and dystopic (Goldberg 2016). Instead, I suggest that the study of platforms like Instagram offers a resource for queer studies insofar as it “emphasizes the importance of lived experience, the intentionality of consciousness, the significance of newness, or the role of repeated habitual action in shaping bodies and the world” (Ahmed 57). It is specifically the power of repeated habitual actions that I want to focus on in exploring digital possibilities. In a context where systemic oppression is difficult to dismantle and social change impossible to imagine, the creation of new paths is, after all, a labor of repetition. ▼ Through an archive of court cases, prison interviews, morgue reports, film, and video, I argue that the promise of liberal democracy and the larger projects of humanism are built through the slaughter of other types of (non)sociality. Specifically, I attend to the murders of trans and queer people of color, histories of racialized violence, prisons, HIV/AIDS, and the animal industrial complex to knot together spaces of friction where non-mimetic histories might tell us something about one another. In other words, my project is not about substituting abject bodies, but shows how mechanisms of destruction are used and reused in the multiple projects of epistemic violence. To this end, I am interested in the ontological limits for those named as objects, under relentless force. Utilizing theories of the postcolonial, work in Black studies, feminist science studies, political and bioeconomies, and psychoanalysis, I argue that queer life is necessarily produced as the underside of gender normative, able bodied, white heterosexuality. Queer Remains is about the material remains of trans and queer people, the flesh and bones of those that once were, and also indexes the ways past violations haunt the present. The introduction, "The Afterlives of Social Death" opens with a reading of a closed circuit TV scene of Duanna Johnson, a black trans woman who was brutally beaten by Mississippi police while in custody in 2009. Here I situate my work, and its interventions, in various genealogies of Black, Queer, and Trans studies. The first chapter, "Queer Crypts: Overkill and Ontological Capture," thinks through an archive I assembled of murdered trans and queer people. I work through the gruesome horror of these murders to try to piece together a reading of violence that resists the "bad apple" model that popular LGBT politics argues. The true terror is not only in the pageantry of the murders, but the reality that they are not "outlaw practices," rather they constitute the norm of dominant culture. My second chapter, "Necrocapital: AIDS/Affective Accumulation/Viral Labor," argues that even within the biopolitical state, the reproduction of death is also a space of capitalist accumulation. The violence I highlight is the reality that the HIV cell lines are the alienated cell labor of a person living with HIV, and this labor produces drugs that the same laborer might not be able to afford. My third chapter, "Forced Life: Animality, Trans Captivity and Abolitionist Time," is an extended meditation on forms of "living" that might signify a space of (non)being more unthinkable than death. This chapter's materiality is the dual histories of the prison industrial complex and factory animal farming. Here I am interested in resituating abolition as a way of dislodging the work of humanism as the barometer of liberation. My conclusion, "Death Drops," offers a reading of a 14-year old gay youth's suicide letter, written before he hanged himself in 2010. ▼ Since academic research first began to consider pornography, it has remained a key reference point for discussions of representation and sexuality, particularly for scholars in the fields of feminist and queer studies. The more recently emerging genre of queer pornography—popularly understood to be pornography made by queer people for queer people—thus offers a particularly interesting example for questions about genre, representation and queer politics. This thesis considers what comprises queer pornography when it is situated in a series of related but not identical fields— “porn studies”, theories of representation and identity, genre studies, and feminist queer theory. The first chapter considers how we write about pornography in the academy, tracing in particular the use of anti-pornography feminism within the field of porn studies. The second chapter uses queer pornography to unpack what it means to want to “see yourself on screen”. Across the collected fields of feminist, cultural, sexuality, and screen studies, the concept of “identification” has been key to analysis of pornography but has also become key to understanding the form and effects of pornography outside the academy, with different accounts of identity and representation being tested against pornography. Using feminist film theory, the thesis considers the allure of identification and intersectionality in both academic and popular settings. In the concluding chapters, this thesis asks how the objects of queer pornography and queer theory might speak to each other. Chapter three outlines a genre definition of queer pornography, focusing on its audience and reception, while chapter four takes this account of queer pornography as a site for understanding the queer theoretical debates about anti/normativity. The final chapter draws on the work of Robyn Wiegman to consider how we engage with our scholarly objects in feminist and queer theory. It argues that queer pornography provides insight into queer politics in a post-gay marriage world and contends that queer pornography, and its affective terrain, ultimately represent a kind of queer utopia.

▼ SOME OF THE PARTS: FRAGMENTARY LITERATURE AND QUEER POLITICS Jacob Benjamin Brogan Cornell University January 2015 Investigating the interplay of textual form and conceptual problems, "Some of the Parts" studies the strategic use of fragmentary literary styles by queer novelists over much of the past century, focusing especially on the connection between formal deviance and sexual difference. These works are "fragmentary" in that they deliberately foreground their own incompleteness, calling constant attention to their refusal to tell full and final stories. To the extent that they dramatize the fundamental lack of a text, fragments become a powerful means of imagining the mechanisms of desire and the denial thereof. In the process, fragmentation offers a paradoxical resource to queer authors, one that allows them to explore political, social, and even biomedical problems that would otherwise be overwhelming in scope. On the one hand, the shattered worlds that these authors summon up mirror the fraught contours of queer life and experience. Simultaneously, fragmentation serves as a tool that enables richer encounters with the very ills it diagnoses. The first chapter provides a broad overview of the ways fragmentation has been understood and put to work in the past. The second chapter, which attends to the memoiristic writings of Gertrude Stein, tackles a long running critical tradition that castigates Stein for her failure to identify herself as a lesbian, an absence that is ultimately but one point of fragmentation among many in her work. The third chapter looks at the ways William S. Burroughs repurposed bits and pieces of his early pulp accounts of gay life in his later work. This method allows him to undermine the otherwise intractable stability of the categories he had reluctantly embraced earlier in his career. The fourth chapter explores the long-term usefulness of this approach by turning to the queer, African- American science fiction novelist Samuel R. Delany, who, in The Tale of Plagues and Carnivals, his 1984 novel of the AIDS crisis, embraces a multigeneric style in order to confront an otherwise incomprehensible challenge to queer existence. The final chapter of this project turns to the early 21st century novels of David Markson, in which fragmentation provides a means of negotiating the persistent pressures of the closet. Ultimately, the conclusions shows how fragmentary logics offer new means of thinking about problems of causality, arguing that such an approach is necessary as queer studies moves forward. ▼ Modern museums and galleries are cultural spaces that often participate in human rights advocacy and social activism. Exhibitions within these spaces are the physical manifestations of these ideologies, the way that institutions connect with their audiences and with the communities they purport to represent. ‘Where is the Queer?’ explores the ways that museums and galleries in Aotearoa represent queerness within their exhibitions, in various stages of the development process. This dissertation addresses a key gap in the literature by critically re-engaging with queerness, exploring the intersections between queer theory and museum theory in an area under-examined in New Zealand practice. This research was exploratory in nature, utilizing a credible multi-method case study approach to retrieve data from an ephemeral process, exhibition production. Archival documentary research provided the necessary background to the exhibitions’ development, as well as supporting evidence for various curatorial choices. Interviews with curators then established key areas of interest, including curatorial strategies, conceptual goals, tailored public programming, and their perspectives on issues with LGBTQ representation. The findings of this research show that exhibiting queerness is difficult terrain to negotiate, although museums and galleries generally aim to present and include a diversity of perspectives in a balanced way. However, the ways that queerness is represented also tend to rely on now outdated ideologies, such as an emphasis on gay men’s perspectives, reductive ‘coming-out’ narratives, and a neutral stance on the messages the exhibitions put forward. The comparative analysis of the cases points to the need for museums and galleries to engage more critically with queer history, theory and the community more broadly. In practice, this means greater levels of collaboration with the communities they hope to serve, taking a more activist approach that gives authority to queer voices throughout development. This is significant as queer communities become increasingly visible and celebrated in New Zealand society; representing these communities in public spaces needs to be a process in line with current ideas and not rely on defunct, overly simple, or potentially damaging modes of representation. This research therefore has applicability for both museum curatorial practice and a broader human rights movement, by challenging the sector within New Zealand and internationally to engage effectively with queer content. Using in-depth semi-structured interviews, this research was conducted with an intersectionality framework that examined how the intersection of markers of difference inform individual reality and lived experiences for young adults with disabilities who identify as a sexual or gender minority. The sample included eight adolescents in high school across the state of Oregon who had a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program and identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or queer. A multiple-phase data analysis led to in-depth descriptions of each individual's experiences as well as consistent cross-case themes. Key themes in the individual context included: identity development, positive beliefs about identity, navigation of identity labels, strategies for facing discrimination, and relationships. Experiences in the home context that shaped identity focused on the key areas of support, rejection, and religion. Concerning the school social context, the themes that emerged were the overlap of queerness and disability in the schools, Gay Straight Alliances and extracurricular clubs, and desired staff characteristics for an adult ally in school. No consistent themes were identified in the community domain. These findings contributed to the participants' descriptions of their beliefs about the future, focusing on independent living, postsecondary education, and employment. Analysis extends the limited research available for this subgroup, shedding a light on the importance of inclusive research. In addition, findings support implications for changes in how we work with students with disabilities who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, queer, transgender, or intersex as well as how we train and support our teachers to work with all students and engage in anti-discriminatory practices. ▼ Using discourse analysis, this paper investigates the unresolved nature of a recently documented case of “conversion disorder” or “mass psychogenic illness” experienced by a group of teenage girls in Le Roy, New York. I argue we can see this contemporary embodiment of hysteria as a form of queer communicative resistance, existing in a discursive space called the hysterical supernatural. This new terminology – an alternative to the one-dimensionality of conventional medical models – looks toward the crucial intersection of queer theory, antiracist feminisms, disability studies, and trauma studies. The construction of hysteria becomes an important framework for investigating nuances of patriarchal oppression within intersections of gender, race, sexuality, disability, age, class, communication, agency, and (self)representation in this case. I interrogate the spirit, soul, and emotional consciousness of hysterical bodies in opposition to Western medical models that assess and diagnose deviant bodies. Language and embodiment within the hysterical supernatural demonstrate how non-normative behaviors become a gendered spectacle and require a re-imagining of a different kind of a hysteria altogether – one that creates a space for its own expression and communication that resists the possibility of being named. New media and contemporary technologies also play an important role, as their representations of these girls’ bodies make the language of hysteria hyper-visible and vulnerable to a particular kind of surveillance. The hysterical supernatural in Le Roy is a linguistic and artistic disruption that transcends the pathologization of hysterical bodies. As a recent example of gendered hysteria, the Le Roy case encourages a sense of urgency in the re-creation of a narrative with strong social, gendered, and political implications. The terminology of the hysterical supernatural provides an alternative lens to queer hysteria as a complex and variable diagnosis.

▼ This thesis explores the ways that sexual violence becomes perceptible through the body. While we are often unable to assimilate trauma into language, we maintain other corporeal systems in which to understand, respond to, and discern it. Looking backwards at historical representations of hysteria opens up new languages, metaphors, and systems of thought when we take seriously the gestures of hysteria as corporeal responses and adaptions to the experience of sexual violence. The excess of performances of hysteria,the coughing, screaming, quaking, and crying, become a means to archive and make visible a violence thought of as unspeakable. The first two chapters of this thesis focus on historical representations of hysteria through the photographs of Louise Augustine Gleizes of the Salpêtrière Hospital, and Ida Bauer, the women behind Sigmund Freud’s Dora. The gestures and ‘symptoms’ of their hysteria are read alongside their experiences of sexual violence. This reading takes seriously the effects of hysteria as a source of embodied knowledge regarding how the body responds to sexual trauma. The third chapter brings this hysterical understanding of the body into the contemporary work of the queer writer, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, who makes use of the hysterical body both to make visible unacknowledged sexual violence and trauma, and as a modality for seeing and connecting with other queer survivors of trauma. The repertoire of hysterical gestures becomes an avenue for queer people, gender variant people, and survivors of sexual violence to articulate and express both desire and pain in ways that do not present recovery from trauma as an endpoint or static moment to be achieved, nor as a precursor to fulfilling physical and sexual intimacy. The performativity of queer hysteria makes itself visible on bodies through stylization, adornment, and biological and physical gesture. These corporeal gesticulations are created and perceived through and in relation to one’s own experience of trauma. Queerness appears not as a utopian solution to and trauma, but a means to use these experiences with a difference. À la fin du XIXème siècle, la médecine prend en charge de manière prégnante le phénomène homosexuel, à l'aune des découvertes en psychopathologie. Le personnage est non seulement identifié physiquement sur la base d'un certain nombre de critères dits scientifiques, mais plus encore, on dresse sa cartographie mentale. Bien que cette classification des comportements sexuels se fasse dans une intention moins punitive que curative, les pratiques sexuelles minoritaires sont encore stigmatisées. Au niveau juridique, les lois françaises sont réputées clémentes puisque les pratiques homosexuelles ne constituent plus un délit dans le code pénal de 1810. L'usage détourné de l’outrage public aux moeurs permet cependant de contrôler les comportements tandis qu’on observe une recrudescence des procès pour outrage aux moeurs en fin de siècle. Notre travail, qui s'inscrit explicitement dans le cadre des Gender studies et de la Queer theory, est d’abord épistémologique : il vise à analyser la construction d’un savoir sur l’homosexualité dans la seconde moitié du xixème siècle à travers le corpus médical,dont le rôle est souvent considéré comme majeur dans les études, et à travers les corpus juridiques et littéraires, parfois minimisés. Nos analyses relèvent également de l’histoire des représentations : il s’agit de proposer une définition de l’esthétique décadente à laquelle nous intégrons le signifiant homosexuel. Notre propos est enfin d’entrer dans l’étude détaillée des textes par le biais de trois thématiques majeures démontrant l’usage décadent d’une homotextualité : la symbolique des fleurs, la figure de l’androgyne et le mythe de Narcisse.

By the end of the 19th century, medicine overwhelmingly took hold of the homosexual phenomenon, basing itself on new findings related to psychopathology. Not only were characters physically identified thanks to a series of so-called scientific criteria, but they were also analysed through mental mapping. Although the aim of the classification of sexual behaviours was to cure rather than punish, the practices of sexual minorities were still stigmatized. As far as the judiciary system was concerned, French laws were considered to be quite lenient in so far as homosexual relationships had no longer been regarded as offences since the 1810 penal code. Nevertheless, the distorted use of the affront to public decency enabled to control people's behaviours and, by the end of the century, an increase of the trials focusing on cases of indecent exposure could be noticed. Our work, that definitely ascribes itself within the field of Gender Studies and Queer theory, is first and foremost epistemological and seeks to analyze how a body of expertise about homosexuality emerged in the second half of the 19th century, through the medical corpus that turned out to be prevalent in the studies that were conducted then, as well as through both legal and literary texts, although they were quite overlooked then. ▼ This qualitative study examine the discursive and pedagogical practices of a group of immigrant Latina mothers in Los Angeles who teach a workshop series that engages Latina/o parents and community members in conversations about queer Latina/o issues. The LGBT Acceptance Project is an LGBT curriculum designed and taught by the Promotoras of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. For the dissertation study, I was interested in how the Promotoras engaged parents and community members in conversations about gender, race and sexuality within a Latina/o context. I was also interested in the identities of the Promotoras as women who work for Planned Parenthood and their roles as advocates and allies for queer communities. Two research questions guided this study: 1) What are the pedagogical and discursive practices that inform the Promotoras teaching of the LGBT Acceptance Project? 2) How do the Promotoras understand their ally identity and how does this inform their teaching and daily lives as heterosexual Latina allies engaged in queer activism? Interviews and observations were the two sources of data collection used in the study. I conducted three interviews with each of the Promotoras who teach the LGBT Acceptance Project. The interviews focused on their life histories, their pedagogical approaches to their teaching of the LGBT Acceptance Project and their identities as advocates and allies for queer communities. I also collected observation data from seven workshop series. Adapting the work of Kumashiro (2000) on anti-oppressive teaching strategies, I documented four types of exchanges within the workshop series I argue lead to new understandings about power and oppression, within a Latina/o context. The first chapter in the dissertation that describes my findings addresses the Promotoras identities as allies and advocates for queer youth. I begin the chapter with introductory portraits of each of the Promotoras. The portraits are followed by narratives of three Promotoras that offered distinct experiences of how they understand their identities as allies and advocates for queer communities. The second chapter describes my findings where I discuss the different ways Maria Felix engaged parents in conversations about queer communities. Within the workshop space, several tools and techniques are used by Maria Felix that create different opportunities for parents to engage in conversations about queer communities. Three themes within the teaching emerged from my observations. The first is the LGBTQ Experience and Becoming Allies, which addressed how parents came to understand the experiences of queer youth and how they saw their roles as advocates and allies. The second theme is Relational and Intersectional Understanding of the Queer Latina/o Experience, focused on how Maria Felix gets parents to understand the intersectional forms of oppression queer Latina/o youth experience. ▼ How might we pivot and turn towards outsider bodily knowledges to learn how bodies come to matter within and through the extended medical industrial complex? Using the concept of the embodied constellation, I examine what it means to know as and through our sick bodies – in relationship to data, information, knowledge – and what it means to claim that these kinds of knowing matter. Embodied constellations enable us to recognize that what we perceive as flattened constructs and single systems are instead a multiplicity of pathways and systems that may or may not interact with each other, thus knowing them in one way rather than another. Using a methodology I call AutoEthnoGraphics I put the researcher’s embodiment at the center of the research as analysis itself. Such analysis demonstrates the chemical, biological, and organic processes of the sick body, and includes poetry, images, and drawings from 30 years of my personal graphic journal. AutoEthnoGraphics thus draws our attention to just how we are implicated in the thinking, molding, structuring of end results. I speak to and share methods from ranging forms of trans-disciplinary scholarship. Grounded in my own work as an artist, I add American studies methods of ethnography and discourse analysis, mix in women of color feminisms' narrative storytelling; queer theory's analysis of outsider status, time, and failure; critical race theory's unpacking of institutionalized structures; science and technology studies' questioning of categories and their risks and credibility; and finally, media studies' deconstruction of images and sound. These tools, methods, and concerns come together in Queer Justice Design, my set of counter-practices for pivoting towards the outsider while making these embodied knowledges central to communities of care. The central tenets and values inform how we move through and co-create these practices with others to shape more livable lives. Those who would benefit from a practice of Queer Justice Design are those scholars and community organizers working towards universal or participatory design, and towards feminist and queer justice. Those I invite into these conversations work in such fields as disability studies, digital humanities, queer theory, feminist praxis, and cultural studies.
