▼ The area of study for this project is the Leach Field,
which is located in Jackson County, Kansas. Production in the Leach
Field has historically been disappointing, with 388,787 barrels of
oil being produced since the field’s discovery in 1963 (KGS, 2015).
Production of the field has been highly variable, with only 20,568
barrels of oil being produced in the last 20 years. Economic and
other concerns that have impacted production and production rates
of the field include: low oil prices soon after its discovery,
numerous changes of ownership, and lack of significant production
infrastructure in the area. Stroke of Luck Energy &
Exploration, LLC. has recently purchased the majority of the leases
and wells in the Leach Field, and is reestablishing the field as a
productive oil field. Plans include: washing down several plugged
and abandoned wells, and drill new wells to increase production in
the field. The goal of this study was to determine the major
geologic factors controlling reservoir
quality in the Hunton and
Viola Limestone Formations in the Leach Field, so that a future
exploration model can be developed to help increase and stabilize
the field's overall production. This model was created by applying
several testing methods including: well logging analysis,
microscope analysis, and subsurface mapping. Based on these results
it was determined that the
quality of the reservoir rocks is
controlled by the degree of dolomitizaiton in both formations.
Reservoir
quality is as important as structure in determining well
productivity in the Leach Field.

Do the producers follow the specifications? This study analyses and reviews if producers follow the requirements of the fashion company’s specification. The purpose was to, through a qualitative and experimental research, decide if all the requirements that involve dark coloured thin knitted t-shirts, of the company's specifications are applied during the production. Through interviews with people with great knowledge within the subjects; quality controls, knitted materials, production abroad and specifications, the authors’ got answers to whether producers ignore the requirements in the specification, as well as why. Through an experimental study, following the standards in the specifications, two shirts from season 2014 and two shirts from season 2015 were examined and compared, to see if they differed. All shirts were supposed to be produced by the same specifications. In the result, the experimental study presents; how the authors proceeded to truthful results. Quotes from the qualitative interviews are also presented. The quotations prove the authors'…

▼ This study is about the quality of the work of external auditors as part of the broader corporate governance frame. It contributes new evidence to the U.S.’s Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) inspection research literature on the association between the PCAOB inspection outcomes and audit quality, as well as between PCAOB inspection outcomes and client firms’ internal control systems and internal corporate governance. In hypothesising these relationships, agency theory and signalling theory are invoked. This study focuses on two rounds of PCAOB inspections to identify change that have occurred in these inspection outcomes and their practical implications for medium-to-small auditor firms and their business clients’ managers and investors. Three sets of hypotheses are generated in this study. A quantitative research method is applied in this study. The sample in this study consists of 806 inspection reports. They are several findings from this study. First, in relation to the association between the PCAOB inspection outcomes and abnormal audit fees paid to auditors by client firms used to test the first hypothesis, the result suggests if there is an increase in abnormal audit fees then there will be an increased probability of obtaining a deficiency report. In terms of the association between the PCAOB inspection outcomes and client firms’ effective internal controls used to test the second hypothesis, the result suggests if there is an improvement in client firms’ internal controls then auditors will have a decreased chance of obtaining a deficiency report. With regard to the association between the PCAOB inspection outcomes and client firms’ internal corporate governance applied to test the third hypothesis in this study. This result suggests if client firms’ internal corporate governance is stronger thus client firms’ auditors are more likely to have a favourable PCAOB inspection outcome. However, the result is insignificant, while in the hypothesised direction, can not be claimed as supporting the third hypothesis. This study highlights the significant association between the PCAOB inspection outcomes and positive abnormal audit fees paid to auditors by client firms and client firms’ effective internal controls as well. Finally, this study contributes to current PCAOB literature by examining the direct association between the PCAOB inspection outcomes and audit quality, client firms’ internal controls and client firms’ internal corporate governance.

▼ The Upper Devonian Jean Marie Member of the Redknife Formation in northern British Columbia is an extensive carbonate shelf complex. Porous stromatoporoid boundstones are the primary gas reservoirs, and are stratigraphically trapped beneath and adjacent to the Upper Redknife Shale Member. This study focuses on characterizing reservoir
quality and regional distributions through facies description, reservoir attribute mapping, and delineation of the depositional and/or diagenetic
controls on reservoir
quality. The study is based upon detailed core description of whole core from 80 wells (1556 m of cumulative length), and wireline logs from 156 wells. The Jean Marie reservoir interval is composed of 17 facies grouped within 5 facies associations. The stromatoporoid boundstone ("reef") facies association is concentrated within three distinct, north-trending fairways within the eastern, central, and western portion of the study area. These fairways are interpreted to be the product of a westward prograding carbonate shelf that evolved from a ramp to rimmed shelf through time. The highest reservoir
quality within the reef complex coincides with fractured facies characterized by grain-supported textures and associated high interparticle porosity. The spatial distribution of reservoir properties is depicted through cross-sections and maps of facies, grain-supported textures, gross and net porosity thickness, pore-volume thickness, gross interval thickness and fracture density.

▼ Increasingly stringent government regulations and the
rising price of oil are causing automotive manufactures to develop
vehicles capable of obtaining higher fuel economies and lower
emissions. To achieve these goals, automotive manufactures have
been developing hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in
hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEV) that use both electricity and
petroleum based fuels as their power sources. While hybridizing the
vehicle powertrain improves the fuel efficiency of the vehicle, the
addition of multiple power sources and modes creates many unique
issues with vehicle driveability that are difficult and
time-consuming to calibrate. The drive
quality (also referred to as
driveability) of a vehicle refers to the vehicle's responsiveness
to driver inputs and overall smoothness of the vehicle in
operation. A vehicle with good drive
quality results in a
comfortable ride for both the driver and passengers. Drive
quality
is a subjective measure of the driver's perception of the dynamic
responses of the vehicle. It is typically measured using highly
trained test drivers that analyze the vehicle's behavior under
specific driving conditions such as take-off, acceleration, pedal
tip-in/tip-out, gear shifts, and braking. Assessing and improving
vehicle drive
quality in this way can be time consuming and is
subject to human error. Recently, major automobile manufacturers
have begun to move towards the use of specially-designed software
packages to evaluate drive
quality objectively.This thesis
discusses the development of control strategies for The Ohio State
University's EcoCAR 2 competition vehicle with an in-depth analysis
of the effects of the control strategies on the
objectively-measured drive
quality of the vehicle. The OSU EcoCAR 2
vehicle had serious issues tip-in drive
quality due to the high
amount of gear backlash present in the powertrain. A feedforward
control was implemented to smooth the driver's torque request to
minimize the negative effect of gear backlash on the tip-in drive
quality. The control system developed to accomplish this contains
easily calibratable parameters that can be quickly adapted to be
used in future EcoCAR vehicles and is mostly independent of the
powertrain architecture.A control system for implementing
regenerative braking in the OSU EcoCAR 2 vehicle was developed and
calibrated to provide smooth torque delivery and positive drive
quality characteristics. This included both creep torque at low
vehicle speed as well as coastdown torque at higher vehicle speeds
in order to mimic the behavior of a conventional vehicle with a
traditional internal combustion engine and automatic
vehicle. Finally, a robust and reliable control system is presented
for shifting the automated manual transmission in the OSU EcoCAR 2
by speed matching the input and output shaft speeds using an
electric machine. This control system includes a gear shifting
handshaking process that was implemented between the supervisory
and transmission controllers to facilitate the complex gear
shifting process. The…

Software Algorithms to Coordinate and Improve Voltage Sag Ridethrough Capabilities of Networked Industrial Processes.

▼ For those who design, operate, and troubleshoot industrial processes, electric power
quality is a
subject that requires much consideration. Processes that use electronic sensors, actuators, and computation devices are heavily reliant on a stable, consistent input power source. When a power
quality event such as a voltage fluctuation occurs, automation equipment often behaves unpredictably and causes process malfunction or failure. Because industrial power consumers often blame their electric utility for these events, some utilities offer process susceptibility studies as a service for their customers. During a typical study, utility technicians and engineers perform in-house tests on suspect components or systems using voltage sag generating equipment. These tests determine device malfunction thresholds and establish an event failure timeline. Test results provide data for applying mitigation solutions, where the most critical or susceptible loads receive a higher priority for improvement. While effective, this approach often requires the addition of costly hardware. This study presents novel software algorithms that coordinate and improve process ridethrough capabilities of network connected industrial processes. An add-on PC interfacing with an automation network executes a routine that detects voltage sags, performs a fast measurement of sag parameters, and determines an expected process response. Rather than implement a `cure all' reaction for every disturbance scenario, mitigation routines are executed based upon the expected response. Underlying design constraints of this study are to minimize or avoid the installation of conventional ridethrough hardware and adhere to a software architecture that is unintrusive to existing controllers. Voltage sag detection is performed with a real-time analysis of incoming voltages and is triggered from RMS voltage derivative threshold crossings. Having recognized the presence of a voltage sag, the algorithm determines the sag magnitude with a peak detection method, and can associate the measured magnitude/phase combination with previously recorded process data. Either the sag characteristics or historical process response data is then analyzed to determine the expected process response. Sags that can potentially force motor drives to trip offline cause the process to respond to an expected shutdown. Voltage sag magnitude/phasing combinations that have been shown to cause no process disruption are ignored. Combinations which have caused only instrument signal corruption and significant process variable deviations trigger the mitigation routine to address faulted control signals only. Drive fault mitigation responses consist of a software-only drive coast routine and an improved drive coast routine requiring the addition of basic switching hardware. Out of tolerance process errors are mitigated with output control command substitution or input signal substitution routines. Verification of software functionality is achieved with…

▼ The monitoring of recreational waters is important to gauge risks to human health. The methods currently used are time-intensive (18-24 hours to test results) and because of this, results may be inaccurate. There are now molecular techniques capable of delivering faster results on multiple microbiological targets, including source tracking markers. However, these techniques cannot be utilized most effectively until extraction efficiencies of environmental DNA are known. Earlier studies of bacterial indicators in recreational beach waters using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed variation in the DNA extraction efficiency of filtered marine water samples. Silica-based binding matrix micro-columns used in DNA extraction kits, have a limited binding capacity for DNA. The elution of DNA off the column appears to be released in a non-linear fashion, suggesting that for robust extraction a minimum amount of DNA must be bound. By using known quantities of Lactococcus lactis to mimic the characteristics of enterococci, along with a minimum amount of background DNA it is possible to determine DNA recovery for the extraction/purification process. This was accomplished by adding a known amount of Lactococcus lactis cells to samples of recreational water along with large volumes of water or known amounts of background DNA. After extraction, the Lactococcus lactis DNA was quantified using qPCR. The percentage of Lactococcus lactis remaining in the elution was then used to quantify the results from the enterococci assay. Source tracking markers for dog associated bacteroidales and gull associated catellococus were adapted into Taqman™ chemistry qPCR assays. These assays were then developed with standards and tested against South Florida water samples. These assays can help provide new information to the contributor of fecal waste to beach and coastal environments. These assays performed well in the field and should be incorporated into the testing of beach water that allows dogs, or has a large gull population.

In order to follow the competitiveness of the current increasingly globalized market, Portuguese industry tries hard to keep up with this evolution, in which quality management systems are an integrant part of its processes. Many businesses have been adopting these management systems because they feel the need to stand out in the competitive market through the certification of their services. Based on these concerns, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) determined requirements for normalization of procedures in the implementation of quality management systems. these requirements are included standards that guide the companies that intend to implement management systems and, eventually, their further certification. The implementation of these systems contributes to better operation of the company, better management and production control, cost-cutting, market distinction and continuous improvement.
The current work depicts the participation in the implementation process of NP EN ISO 9001:2008 in a confectionery company, where the methods to implement and the several stages were studied, together with the project…

Production and quality controls undertaken in construction sites have often been associated to bureaucratic procedures, being limited to simple administrative tasks, instead of adding value for internal and external stakeholders. For that reason, some research studies have proposed approaches and indicators for the integration of production and quality controls. One of these approaches pointed out in the literature is the use of mobile devices, to support the implementation of those controls. Those devices allow the management of large information batches, reducing rework and errors derived from manual paper-based data collection and further transcription to digital media. Other efforts have focused on the integration between product and process models so that information can be more effectively used during the construction phase of the project. Process models are necessary for carrying out production…

▼ Sound
quality is an important factor in the design of competitive diesel engines. The noise produced by specific components and mechanisms in the engine can play a significant role in determining the perceived
quality of the overall noise and in turn the perceived
quality of the engine. The goal of the present research is to characterize the sounds produced by the phenomenon known as gear rattle and to develop a model that can be used to assess gear rattle levels in a way that connects directly with human perception of rattle. Most previous work in this area has been focused on rating the overall sound
quality of diesel engines, but little has been done to develop models of perception of rattle noise in particular. Various engine recordings in which gear rattle was present were first compiled. These signals were analyzed to identify how sounds changed with increased levels of rattle. A method to simulate gear rattle noise and incorporate it into a no-gear-rattle (baseline) recording was developed. This procedure enabled controlled variation of rattle for use in a psychoacoustic test. The test was designed to quantify detectable levels, perception of growth, and increases in annoyance due to the presence of gear rattle noise. The responses of people who reported having experience with diesel engines were compared with those of a more general population. The subjects with diesel engine experience were found to be better at detecting gear rattle noise. The outcome of this research will be a method to predict how people perceive gear rattle noise so that component noise targets can be set that directly relate to human perception of gear rattle. When coupled with noise generation predictions, this approach can be used to optimize the
quality of the component noise.

The frying process and the reuse of the cooking oil leads to its irreversible degradation through different pathways and agents involved, where the oxidative pathway is probably the best known and studied process of degradation.
To attract the market it is necessary to be competitive, one of the tools is to have a high productivity in the operations. An effective way is the use of measurements. These can be financial and non-financial depending on the goals set from the management. Measurements and the results can be used for evaluations and further development which then can be useful as a basis for management's goals. The purpose of this study is to investigate the non-financial productivity measurements in the most suitable way that can be used at the projects with the possible areas of capacity utilization, quality and quantity/time unit. The following questions been treated in order to obtain material for this work: ● What is productivity? ● How is productivity measured in construction projects…

Studies show that good planning reduces operating coasts and costs for change and additional work. It means that thoughtful planning becomes a more important factor in reducing waste costs and achieving efficient production and good quality. A tool to achieve this is work preparation. Work preparation is a concept that, through planning, facilitates the performance of an activity. To achieve the desired result and quality, the choice of the performance method, workforce, materials, machines and other tools must be decided in good time before the work begins. The purpose of this graduate project is to make a status analysis of how Peab's work preparations are used in production. Identify errors or deficiencies and to investigate the possibility of streamlining. The objective is to get the work preparation more efficient and to suggest improvements. The study has been made in cooperation with Peab Region middle and the current building projects in…

▼ The province (upazila) of Matlab in SE Bangladesh is
highly affected with elevated concentrations of dissolved As
content and widespread fecal contamination in untreated drinking
waters. The study area is sedimentologically composed of thick
floodplain deposits of Holocene age overlying Plio-Pleistocene grey
fine to coarse sands with considerable clays (consisting of Dupi
Tila formation). The goal of the current study is to understand the
possible impact of co-occurrence of dissolved organic carbon (along
with As release) and fecal indicator bacteria (e.g., E.coli) in
aquifers from shallow to deep groundwater
quality in this area.
Nineteen groundwater (spanning a depth range of 14 to 240 m)
samples and nine surface water samples (eight ponds and one canal
in proximity to the piezometer nests) were collected from four
different piezometric nests within north and south Matlab Upazila
in Bangladesh during the monsoonal season (Jun-Jul 2014). The
analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and its fluorescence
properties indicate that the chemical character of DOC from shallow
to intermediate groundwaters (<150 m) and surface water is
dominated by more aromatic and humic materials than deeper
groundwaters. Both groundwaters and surface waters may receive
humic substances leached from soil and/or from the cellular
constituents and exudates of indigenous aquatic organisms.
Dissolved organic carbons in groundwater and surface waters are
composed of predominantly UVA and UVC-humic like along with
tryptophan like components. Only 15% of total C is modern carbon at
shallowest depths (<30 m) in groundwaters. The recharge source
of groundwaters is from local precipitation, with or without some
evaporation before infiltration as depicted by the δ2H and δ¹⁸O
variations and the water is infiltrating through mostly
terrestrially derived weathered sediments into the aquifers. The
type of water in the study area is Ca-Na-HCO₃⁻ type. More toxic and
soluble As (III) is present in shallow groundwaters (<30 m).
High concentrations of As (V) and As[subscript (t)] are observed
high in shallow and intermediate depth wells (<150 m). The most
probable number based on the Colilert test and qPCR result for
E.coli suggest that unprotected surface waters are harbingers for
high microbial population compared to hand pumped wells. However,
the very low observed concentrations of cultured E. coli (<1-10
MPN/100 mL) and E. coli DNA (<40 Copies/100 mL) in the wells
indicates that the abundance of E.coli cells decrease rapidly with
residence time in oligotrophic aquifers. Thus, it may be suggested
that more humic DOC in shallow and intermediate groundwaters may be
involved in complexation or other biogeochemical reactions that may
mobilize As in groundwater. The non-indigenous bacteria can be the
primary producers of DOC in the aquifers which can be utilizing
surface derived DOC.

▼ The imposition of water
quality controls may affect the economy chiefly by altering aggregate production and changing the factor payments, These two effects could not only reallocate resources among production possibilities, but also could change the distribution of benefits of production among members of the society.
This study attempted to provide a workable theory to establish an empirical test of the impacts of water
quality controls on family income distribution. It consists of two separate areas: first, to analyze methodologies of measuring income distribution changes, and , second, to develop a theoretical model that is useful for empirical tests of the impacts of different water
quality controls.
A number of alternative probability density functions have been proposed as models of personal income distribution. The lognormal, displaced lognormal, gamma, and beta distribution functions were considered as appropriate methodologies, since each allows more productive power for income distribution as suggested in the past literature. Detailed information on income distribution can be extracted from the approximations of the distribution functions.
One of the objectives of the research was to evaluate the different methodologies for usefulness. The gastwirth bounds for Gini coefficient were used as the test of goodness to fit; the beta density was clearly superior to the other densities for the SMSA data.
Next, a theoretical model was constructed, emphasizing the production sector and the distribution sector. Water
quality controls were introduced in the production process as a negative input. Water
quality data were collected for all states, and indices of
quality were estimated using analysis of variance techniques. The equilibrium conditions in commodity and factor markets generated the first impacts of water
quality controls on total output and factor payments in the economy.
The specific assumption was made as a theoretical bridge connecting family income distribution and factor payments in the distribution sector. It was assumed that a family's income equals total payments received from owned labor and capital in the production process. Thus, changes in factor payments and total output were included in the distribution equations. Water
quality controls would, therefore, effect family income distribution through changes in total output and changes in factor payment.
The simultaneous equation regression results for 72 SMSA's were not conclusive. It appeared that water
quality parameter may effect the wage rate and total output, if the parameter was not, in fact, a surrogate for other excluded variables in the system. The effect of wage changes on income distribution was not significant, but changes in total output appeared to be the most significant variable in the distribution equations.
In an attempt to account for the many variables which might be expected to effect income distribution, factor analysis was performed on the SMSA's. Two groups…

A high degree of self-inspection reports are essential in today's society where the construction is to be both time and cost effective. Self-inspections acts as a guarantee that the quality of the product is right. Not just for the customer but also for society and the contractor himself. This study has been prepared in cooperation with PEAB Anläggning and has as main purpose to examine the company's procedures regarding its own self-inspections work, and thereby find possible shortcomings. The study deals with employees' attitude towards today's self-inspections as well as highlighting their opinions. In addition, it examines how PEAB Anläggnings pilot project for BIM 360, a system for digital handling of construction documents is received by the employees. An extensive literature study was conducted to provide information and knowledge in the subject. From the literature study has the basis for a survey and two interview studies been created. After the results have been analyzed and compared with the literature study, it has also been discussed, both in terms of results and in terms of methods. The results have suggestions for possible improvement measures. The proposals could lead to the future development of PEAB Anläggnings self-inspections work. The study can confirm that there are some flaws in…

▼ Are the attitudes and cognitive style of top management related to an entity’s financial reporting
quality? The answer is important because the control environment, which includes management’s philosophy and operating style under COSO, is presumed to be the foundation of internal control necessary for effective transaction level processing and for management’s judgments implementing financial reporting and disclosure requirements. Yet empirical tests of the presumption are impaired by the inability to measure management’s attributes. In this study, I extract linguistic markers of top management’s attitudes and cognitive style from their response to financial reporting queries from the Securities and Exchange Commission staff and I relate the markers to concurrent material misstatements in the financial statements under scrutiny. To minimize the influence of outside professional advisors, I use responses to the initial mandated comment letters for small business issuers whose statements contained material misstatements and an industry- and size-matched sample of firms without misstatements. Using factor analysis, I find a factor composed of lower analytical thinking and higher clout significantly improves the explanatory power of a logistic regression of concurrent material misstatement and reduce the Type 1 and Type 2 classification error rates by 5% and 25%, respectively. Results are consistent with management’s attitudes and cognitive style being associated with financial reporting
quality, either directly through management’s accounting judgments or indirectly through internal
controls.

▼ The aim with this master thesis is to analyze a scientific material concerning the context between learning and child/student development, and factors which controls process of learning, to create an image with quality account and teaching in mathematics, which then can raise the mathematical knowledge among students. The phenomena which stand in focus for the investigation is: why there is a negative tendency for development of knowledge in mathematics, among the Swedish students that TIMSSs investigations showed in intercultural comparison within the years 1993, 1999, 2003 and 2007. The method is the ethnographical method, which is based on: analyzing scientific theories about learning child/student development, factors which controls process of learning, and factors which controls process of learning the most and qualitative empiric investigation with qualitatively analyzes the questionnaires, which is about factors which are controlling the process of learning and factors which are controlling the process of learning the most. Result of the theoretical and empiric analyzes shows that factors as school environment, attitude for subjects and teaching, controls and influence the learning. To end a unenthusiastic tendency as a negative development of mathematical knowledge among students that is shown in TIMSS investigation and to elevate the students' performance in mathematics, an elevated qualitative account and teaching in mathematics, by the factors named. Safe school environments as the intercultural meeting place, the teachers influence part to the students' subjects' attitude in mathematics and goal related grading criteria in teaching, is all required for e qualitative teaching in mathematics.

▼ Mass spectrometry plays a central role in proteomics studies which has allowed its expansion to biomedical research. In an effort to accelerate the understanding of the various aspects of protein biology, the comparison and integration of results across laboratories have gained importance. However, the variety of laboratory-specific protocols, instruments, and data processing methods limits the reliability and reproducibility of the proteomics datasets. The harmonization of LC-MS based proteomics experiments is thus urgently needed to ensure that the workflows used are suitable for the intended purpose of the experiments and that they generate consistent and reproducible results. In a first step towards this harmonization, the critical components of each step of the workflow must be identified. Consolidated sample preparation methods with defined recovery and qualified platforms along with systematic assessment of their performance have to be established. They should ultimately rely on well-defined recommendations and reference materials.
Towards these goals, the present project aimed to define, based on current proteomics practices and recent technologies, experimental protocols that will constitute reference methods for the community. The associated results will represent a baseline that can be used to benchmark workflows and platforms, and to conduct routine experiments. A
quality control procedure was developed to routinely assess the uniformity of proteomics analyses. The combination of a simple protocol and the addition of reference materials at different stages of the workflow allowed a straightforward monitoring of both sample preparation and LC-MS performance. In addition, as high resolution/accurate mass instruments with fast scanning capabilities turned out to be particularly suited to targeted quantitative experiments, a significant part of the work has consisted in the evaluation of the capabilities offered by such mass spectrometers to promote good practice upon their inception. The methods developed based on these emerging technologies were compared to the existing workflows allowing recommendations to be made for their implementation for fit-for-purpose experiments.

▼ The quality of indoor air depends on different types of pollutant sources existing in a semi-enclosed environment. The sources can be biological, chemical, or toxic pollutants. These sources can cause health issues and discomfort for occupants. One of the indicators of poor indoor air quality is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). CO2 can be used to indicate the indoor air exchange rate. The lack of air exchange means higher levels of CO2. High levels of indoor particulates can also be an indication of poor air quality. Due to the lack of fresh air, air circulation, and air filtration, the level of contaminants can be higher in some parts of a semi-enclosed space. In pursuit of higher energy efficiency, mechanical ventilation and circulation are necessary to manage the indoor air quality. This thesis describes a system to monitor and manage indoor air quality with the use of ventilation and circulation. The system will introduce fresh air and circulate existing air as needed to keep the indoor air quality within acceptable levels. This keeps the occupants healthy and comfortable. The end result of this research was a sensing system and a control system that communicate wirelessly. The sensing system was able to monitor the environmental changes and the control system was able to show the ability to manage the indoor air quality and the environmental conditions.

▼ The University of Tennessee Space Institute’s (UTSI) variable stability research aircraft, Ryan Navion N66UT, was extensively modified by the Princeton University in the 1960’s. When UTSI acquired the aircraft from Princeton, volumes of calibration data, charts, and schematics manuals were transferred to UTSI.
Based on the study and research of available Princeton documents, methods of calculating flight control laws were “reverse-engineered”. The Variable Stability Navion employs an implicit model following structure to achieve in-flight simulation of other aircraft’s flying
quality. Mathematical formulas were derived to calculate stability derivative potentiometer settings, for the analog response feedback flight
controls system. MATLAB scripts were created to generate potentiometer settings, for both longitudinal and lateral-directional in-flight simulations, and Simulink models were used to verify the results.
This report outlines the calculation and verification process to allow the Variable Stability Navion to simulate different aircraft’s stability and dynamic responses. Sample calculations are focused on the in-flight simulation of the Twin Otter. This report also serves as a step-by-step guide for deriving desired flight control laws.

▼ The objectives of the present work are (1) to review the literature on product
quality from different perspectives, (2) to develop a model that describes the way consumers form judgments about product
quality, and (3) to investigate the proposed model empirically. In addition, price-perceived
quality tradeoffs and the relationship between price and product
quality in the marketplace are investigated. The main conclusions are summarized in this chapter.
The concept of product quality The concept of product
quality has received attention in various disciplines. Four major approaches to product
quality are identified: the metaphysical approach, the production management approach, the economic approach, and the perceived
quality approach. To enhance our insight into the product
quality concept, each of these approaches is discussed, the most attention being given to the economic and the perceived
quality approaches. The metaphysical approach concentrates on the being of
quality.
Quality is regarded by many authors as being synonymous with innate excellence. In essence, it is an unanalyzable property that an individual can learn to recognize only through experience. People differ about
quality not because
quality is different but because people are different in terms of experience. The production management approach differs from the metaphysical approach in that it regards
quality as a concept that is objectively measurable. In the production management approach,
quality is described in technical specifications.
Quality is conformity with these technical specifications. This approach concentrates on producing a product of a given predetermined
quality level. This level of
quality is achieved by
quality of design,
quality of production, continuity of service, and customer service after sale. The most important recent development in the production management approach is the emergence of the 'zero defects philosophy'. In the traditional view, very few or no defects are not economical because such perfectionism would cause the costs of preventing defects to exceed the costs of having the defects. However, it has been shown that
quality improvement need not lead to higher costs, and increasingly, companies, especially Japanese firms, adopt the zero defects philosophy. The economic approach to
quality studies the role of product
quality in the market. Important areas of research are
quality as a competitive weapon of the firm, the hedonic approach, and the role of
quality in consumer behavior, both when consumers are perfectly informed about the market and when they are imperfectly informed. It is remarkable that these areas of research have developed rather independently from each other. Notable exceptions are the widespread adoption of Lancaster's conceptualization of the product as a bundle of characteristics, and the increasing attention in economic theory in general for the notion that consumers are imperfectly informed. The production management approach and the economic approach have in…

▼ A modified
Salmonella mutagenicity assay and a cytotoxicity test were developed to. determine the concentration of sensorially inactive Maillard Intermediate Products (MIP) in fruit juices. The formation of MIP is initiated by heat treatments necessary for pasteurization and thermal concentration. In industrial and laboratory prepared orange juices their concentration was seen to be related to the intensity of the heat treatment and to allow a shelf-life prediction in relation to non-enzymatic browning (inner
quality). The microbial MIP assay(s) are therefore useful for orange juice manufactures to select concentrated juices for reconstitution and packing and to test equipment and processes. The modification of the tests involve preincubation with the tester bacteria for 4 hr at pH 7.4 and 37°C. Under natural acidic condition orange juice is not mutagenic. It was further seen that the heat treatments did not hydrolyze orange glycosides to mutagenic aglycones which could have influenced the assay. MIP were characterized to be polar, non volatile compounds which carry no charge and have a molecular weight from 200 to 700 daltons. Automation of the mutagenicity assay by a turbidometric assay system was seen to be only possible for gel filtration and HPLC fractions of juice; in whole orange juice endogenous growth factors and cytotoxicity disturbed the assay. on the other hand measurement of cytotoxicity of whole juice could be carried out conveniently by a kinetic conductance method. Heat treated laboratory prepared apple juice also contained mutagenic fractions but the whole juice had a positive antimutagenic balance. There was a heat load and dose related reduction of the mutagenicity of MNNG (N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine) and 4-NQO (4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide) in the presence of apple juice. These findings give new aspects to apple juice as a healtly food.

▼ Quality and safety of foods are often influenced by the presence and growth of microorganisms. Microorganisms in foods can be divided into two groups: pathogenic organisms, causing illness, and microorganisms that are not harmful to health, but that can spoil a product. Presence and growth of pathogenic organisms should be avoided as much as possible. Growth of spoilage organisms is allowed to a certain extent. Presence and growth of pathogenic microorganisms largely influences food safety, whereas growth of spoilage organisms, generally determines shelf life of a food product, Food
quality is assumed to be influenced by both pathogenic organisms and spoilage organisms. A method to predict microbial safety and
quality of foods is presented. The construction of a food product from its ingredients is simulated, following a recipe. Food processing heuristics are combined with models developed in predictive microbiology. Parameter values of ingredients of foods, such as water activity and acidity, and models for microbial growth and decay are used for prediction. The values of these parameters are collected and present in databases. If required information is lacking, methods to make reliable guesses of the parameters are developed. Furthermore, expert knowledge in production and development of foods can be applied to improve the
quality of prediction. Shelf life can be calculated as a function of fluctuating temperature in time. Several food distribution chains can be simulated to assess the influence of distribution chains on food
quality. The described methods are implemented into a computerised decision support system. Mathematical models for microbial growth, implemented in the decision support system, are given more attention to. Microbiological food
quality is examined by modelling bacterial growth of a spoilage bacterium;
Lactobacillus curvatus. Microbiological food safety is modelled by assessing growth behaviour of a pathogenic bacterium;
Listeria monocytogenes. Models that describe the effect of acidity, temperature, and the combined effect of these variables on the growth parameters of
Lactobacillus curvatus are developed and validated. Growth parameters (lag time, specific growth rate, and maximum population density) are calculated from growth data at various temperature-acidity combinations. The effect of acidity is monitored at several constant temperature values. Models are set up and fitted to the data. The same procedure is used at constant acidity values to model the effect of temperature. For lag time, specific growth rate, and maximum population density, the effect of temperature can be multiplied with the effect of acidity. The models are equipped with parameters suggesting that organisms cease growing at minimal or maximal values for controlling variables (Temperature, pH,
aw ).
Evidence is presented for the existence of a lower and upper acidity boundary value for bacterial growth. The effect of temperature,…

▼ The installation of wind power plant has significantly increased since several years due to the recent necessity of creating renewable and clean energy sources. Before the accomplishment of a wind power project many pre-studies are required in order to verify the possibility of integrating a wind power plant in the electrical network. The creation of models in different software and their simulation can bring the insurance of a secure operation that meets the numerous requirements imposed by the electrical system. Hence, this Master thesis work consists in the creation of a wind turbine model. This model represents the turbines installed at Lillgrund wind farm, the biggest wind power plant in Sweden. The objectives of this project are to first develop an accurate model of the wind turbines installed at Lillgrund wind farm and further to use it in different kinds of simulations. Those simulations test the wind turbine operating according to different control modes. Also, a power quality analysis is carried out studying in particular two power quality phenomena, namely, the response to voltage sags and the harmonic distortion. The model is created in the software PSCAD that enables the dynamic and static simulations of electromagnetic and electromechanical systems. The model of the wind turbine contains the electrical machine, the power electronics (converters), and the controls of the wind turbine. Especially, three different control modes, e.g., voltage control, reactive power control and power factor control, are implemented, tested and compared. The model is tested according to different cases of voltage sag and the study verifies the fault-ride through capability of the turbine. Moreover, a harmonics analysis is done. Eventually the work concludes about two power quality parameters.
Subjects/Keywords: Wind Power; Power Electronics; Induction Machine; Controls (Voltage Control; Active and Reactive Power Control; Current Control; DC Voltage Control); Voltage Source Converter (VSC); Power Quality; Voltage Sags; Harmonics; and Grid Code.

An integrated audit evidence planning model to quantify the extent of audit evidence.

▼ Audit evidence enables the auditor to express an opinion on the financial statements. To address the risk that the auditor may express an inappropriate opinion, the nature, timing and extent of audit procedures must be responsive to the assessed risks of material misstatement. The auditor must aggregate the levels of assurance obtained from different combinations of tests of
controls, substantive analytical procedures and tests of details to respond to the assessed risks. These evidence planning decisions are complex and require professional judgement. Research has found that the extent of audit procedures is not linked to the assessed risks and that auditors may not know to aggregate evidence from different types of audit procedures. Research also supports the use of a structured audit methodology that includes decision models, to guide the application of professional judgement. This leads to the overall objective of this study: the development of
an integrated audit evidence planning model to quantify the extent of audit evidence. The study employs a grounded theory model building approach, interpreting the relevant concepts and principles from the literature review into the development of the model. The integrated audit evidence planning model quantitatively relates the extent of audit evidence in a logical and structured manner with the risk assessment and three distinct overall levels of assurance needed to support the audit opinion. It uses the cumulative nature of audit evidence and the compensatory inter-relationship between tests of
controls, substantive analytical procedures and tests of details to quantitatively aggregate the extent and levels of assurance from the different combinations of procedures to obtain reasonable assurance at the required overall level of assurance. The model provides a framework for influencing and guiding the exercise of professional judgement and is a practical and effective tool to
benefit the users thereof when conducting an audit. Thus, the study models the extent of audit evidence with reference to the aggregation of different types and combinations of evidence and the linkage between the risk assessment and the extent of evidence that provides a flexible framework for the application of professional judgement regarding the gathering of audit evidence.
