▼ Shifts in locations and levels of care and changing demographics have created a high demand for informal family caregivers. The U.S. healthcare system could not sustain the financial or human resources necessary to meet the needs of care recipients who are dying without the assistance of informal family caregivers. End-of-life caregivers pay a price—emotional, social, financial, and physical—throughout the caregiving process. Many factors contribute to the cost of caregiving, such as caregiver distress and burden. Despite the extensive scientific literature on caregiving at the end of life, necessary evidence to inform nursing science in ways that adequately and appropriately support and sustain those healthy informal family caregivers providing end-of-life care remains unknown. No research to date has approached this problem from a linguistic standpoint. This study used
discourse-based
analysis to examine a
qualitative secondary dataset to understand which aspects of self (caregiver) and other (care recipient) are revealed through caregiver
discourse and how a caregiver’s perception of self and the care recipient change over time. Principles of
discourse analysis were applied to develop an analytic framework and explore the linguistic cues (i.e., grammar, reference, identity, deixis, stance, indexicality and agency) expressed by a caregiver in their role as caregiver. Findings demonstrated the usefulness of a
discourse-based analytic method as a new approach in the re-use of large
qualitative secondary datasets. In addition, linguistic cues were revealed about how a caregiver perceives self and the care recipient over time. Results established an analytic framework that can be applied to a larger sample of this dataset to more deeply and precisely reveal discursive cues within one End-of-Life Caregiving Trajectory (expected-death) and across all three trajectories (expected-death, unexpected-death and mixed-death). Understanding a caregiver’s discursive cues may give clinicians the ability to better identify subtle yet important expressions of caregivers’ perception of self and others in the caregiving role. Further
analysis is needed to identify how these linguistic patterns can lead to interventions that support informal family caregivers. Timely and appropriate interventions in times of uncertainty can mitigate negative outcomes for the caregiver and care recipient, resulting in a healthy caregiving workforce.

▼ Preterm birth is a distressing experience for parents. This distress may continue into early childhood, with negative consequences for parents' mental health and child development. The purpose of this study was to take an in-depth look at how parents formed their accounts of premature birth, postpartum distress, and lives as parents and partners.
Discourse analysis of semi-structured interviews and photo-elicitation assignments were used to analyze the parents' experiences in the context of the couple relationship. The study population included 8 parents of premature infants born from 24 to 30 weeks gestation, who had experienced significant distress in and out of the hospital. Parents participated in the study when their children were between 15 months and 8 years old. In the initial interview parents described their experience of prematurity, emotional distress, and parenting. Participants returned for a second interview where they further described their distress using photographs they had newly taken or selected. Parents described the preterm birth, hospitalization, and aftermaths as ongoing traumatic events. Discourses of distress included the perfect child, the good mother, and the good father. Parents engaged these discourses in reconciling their loss of idealized birth and parenting and their roles after prematurity. Social isolation and disciplinary power were discourses that showed how parents struggled with interaction with their social networks and with health care providers and institutions. Photo-elicitation provided additional dimensions to the participants' accounts of distress. Findings highlighted how parents described their trauma and distress in ways not captured by psychiatric diagnoses such as depression and anxiety. Findings may help nurses be aware of the negative effects of preterm birth and respond to the parents' emotional needs.

▼ Wearable self-tracking devices are increasingly being used to manage high blood pressure (HBP). While self-tracking technologies (STT) have been praised for their potential to revolutionize health care, many authors have criticized self-tracking for perpetuating healthist ideals, little research has investigated how these health discourses are reproduced in users’ accounts of self-tracking. As such, the current research seeks to understand: 1) how STT users with high blood pressure understand what STT can do for them, and 2) how STT users with high blood pressure are positioned in their talk. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 STT users with HBP. A
discourse analysis revealed that participants’ constructions of self-tracking allowed them to avoid being positioned as moral failures due to their chronic conditions and take up a deserving patient
subject position instead. This thesis demonstrates the complex ways in which participants engaged with their devices and their data.

▼ Developmental delay (DD) has been estimated to affect 1 – 3% of the population and the underlying cause often remains unknown. For parents, receiving a diagnosis for their child’s DD can be a source of validation, and may impact upon their child’s prognosis, treatment and access to available supports. New genetic technologies, chromosomal microarrays (CMA), are now used across Australia to help end the ‘diagnostic odyssey’ families often experience. CMA tests have the capacity to identify genetic changes at much higher resolutions than was previously possible, but may increase the complexity and uncertainty of results. There is no research into the process of these consultations and the way in which this information is communicated to patients attending a genetics clinic.
Using qualitative techniques and guided by the frameworks of symbolic interactionism and interactional sociolinguistics, this study provides a rich and nuanced analysis of paediatric genetic consultations. A multi-layered approach was used, enabling investigations of both the ‘front stage’ (consultations) and ‘backstage’ (interviews with parents and clinicians) to facilitate and further understand emerging patterns. Four data sources were used: (1) pre-consultation surveys with parents (n=32); (2) audio-recordings from consultations (n=32); (3) post-consultation telephone interviews with parents (n=32); and (4) post-consultation interviews with clinical geneticists (n=10).
Overwhelmingly, parents were complimentary regarding consultations and described feeling reassured. Those who were disappointed were largely parents who were desperate for a diagnosis. The vast majority of parents reported a positive relationship with the clinician and felt that the genetic information had been explained in a very useful manner.
Clinicians described consultations as varied and dependent on many factors including parents’ hopes and diagnostic expectations. They identified their primary role as a diagnostician but also acknowledged the therapeutic benefits these consultations could provide to families. Clinicians displayed mixed opinions regarding new tests, appreciating the benefits while also wary of inherent complexities and uncertainties that more detailed genetic testing would bring.
Seven phases were identified within consultations, and on average clinicians contributed more words than parents, however there was variation across and within consultations. Although content of consultations was extremely similar, clinicians appeared to have varied approaches, and different styles were described including the clinical assessment approach and conversational style. Some parents were able to describe their experiences of their child’s development as a ‘narrative’, while during other consultations clinicians seemingly had a checklist of closed questions. Most clinicians used an historical narrative to describe the evolution of genetic testing; comparing past and current limitations with the promise of future genomic technologies.
Findings enabled the…

▼ This dissertation studies the ways in which market-based reproductive health services are advertised and virtually represented on a global scale. I detail the implicit values and assumptions found in the content of reproductive tourism websites. In doing so, I show how medical broker and fertility clinic websites reproduce dominant ideologies and how these websites portray reproductive tourists, egg providers and surrogates. Using a feminist political economy approach, I situate the practice of reproductive tourism within particular historical, economic and political contexts, including both domestic and global neoliberal healthcare reforms. The findings of this thesis reveal that the websites portray neoliberal policies that emphasize consumerism, individual responsibility for ones healthcare and that position reproductive tourists as empowered consumers capable of making informed choices in purchasing new reproductive technologies (NRTs). The marketing of reproductive tourism on these websites also ignore the physical and affective labour of women who are egg providers and surrogates and minimizes the unequal power relationships that exist between reproductive tourists and egg providers and surrogates. Their experiences are erased from view and their bodies objectified and fragmented for market consumption.

▼ Literature on marriage shows that in the span of a
single generation it has become the norm for both spouses to work
outside the home. The inception of dual career marriages in the
1970s has created challenges and complications in the marital
system as women break traditional gender roles in families and lead
the way toward equality at home, just as they do in the industrial
world. Black South African communities are no exception to this
trend. The theoretical framework of social constructionism was used
to identify the ways in which the participants construct their
identities as Black professional women in dual career marriages.
In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Black professional women
in dual career marriages to identify the discourses that construct
their marriages, their autonomy in marriage and how their
construction of autonomy influences their construction of marital
satisfaction. The study found that cultural and Christian
discourses inform the ways in which the participants construct
marriage, autonomy and marital satisfaction. Although the
participants construct themselves as empowered and autonomous
individuals, particularly in the workplace, they construct
themselves as less autonomous within their marriages despite their
expressed need to be seen as equal partners. As a result of their
dual identities the participants consciously adopt different
behaviours in different contexts and in this way reproduce dominant
constructions of women.

A Análise Sociológica do Discurso (ASD), abordagem metodológica utilizada e sistematizada neste estudo, é vinculada à Tradição Espanhola de Pesquisa Social Qualitativa.

▼ In reaction to the misalignment between one-dimensional determinism informing much of the firm growth literature and the non-linear, recursive and idiosyncratic process of growth, the aim of this thesis is to rethink small firm growth. It is inspired by the vast interest in growing firms, and intrigued by contemporary requests to invigorate the research field with new perspectives. By problematizing the phenomena and discussing its underpinning and often taken for granted assumptions, it serves to provoke new insights into how firm growth works, how it can be conceptualized, and how it can be studied. In terms of methodology the thesis is based on a qualitative case study design.
The process of small firm growth is explored in four separate research papers. In paper I the rural firm growth literature is reviewed and three areas of focus are discussed; the output of growth, the process of growth, and the context of growth. In Paper II focus lies on trigger points - events preceding bursts of growth - showing how these unfold through informal everyday interaction. Paper III shows that making sense of growth is problematic and that the phenomenon may be made sense of in distinct ways; as output indicators, as the internal development of the firm, and as a necessity to which the firm has to conform. Paper IV shows how growth unfolds through the interactions between multiple components, and thus promotes shifting the unit of analysis from individual components to the system of components and their interactions.
By reviewing the philosophical foundations informing both the main stream and alternative perspectives in small firm growth research, this thesis provide an informed position from which we can rethink firm growth. It contributes to the literature and the general understanding of small firm growth by critically discussing how growth is conceptualized and by advocating two alternative conceptualizations in firm growth as constructed and as complex. This thesis also contributes by showing that firm growth is more than an output measure, it is a heterogeneous and multifaceted process challenging to both understand and manage. Finally, it shows the potential of theoretical and methodological frameworks stemming from both the linguistic turn and from complexity science for advancing our understanding of how firms grow.

▼ Iran’s foreign policy is consistent and is fundamentally realist with a revolutionist vision while the means are rationalist is the central argument of this dissertation. I make use of the English Schools three traditions of realism, rationalism and revolutionism in analyzing the speeches of Iranian statesmen to identify the ways in which the dynamics of the three traditions have evolved since 1997 and what it means for interpreting the developments of Iran’s foreign policy ventures. I utilize both quantitative and
qualitative methods of
analysis in examining the speeches of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, the presidents since 1997. The quantitative method employs a customized software generating figures that represent the recurrence of realist, rationalist and revolutionist terminologies in all the documents downloaded from the official websites of the Iranian statesmen as well as the United Nations and select news agencies and affiliates. The quantitative phase of the
analysis, meanwhile, carefully examined selected statements of the supreme leader and the presidents uncovering the foreign policy argumentations and justifications, which were studied alongside foreign policy actions and classified under the three traditions. The findings suggest that Iran’s foreign policy is the same as in the other states of international society – it is consistent and dynamic. It is simultaneously realist, rationalist and revolutionist with each tradition serving a specific purpose, which cannot be disentangled from the other two.

▼ High stakes testing has had such a dominant influence on educational policy over the last quarter century that we are likely to label this period in the history of American schools as the standards period (Marshall, 2009). This qualitative
interview study, which was conducted in a large metropolitan area and the surrounding region in the southeastern United States, draws upon the theories of Bakhtin (1981, 1986) and Rosenblatt (1995, 2005) to inform the investigation of the influences of
high stakes testing and standards-based education on secondary English teachers’ abilities to engage in dialogue and transact with the policy mandates communicated to them by their administrators. Data were generated through a series of three
semi-structured interviews. Participants described (1) how the discourse of policy influenced their senses of autonomy as professionals; (2) their experiences of engaging in dialogue with and contributing to the creation of policy; and (3) the influences
of the policy mandates they received on their instructional decisions. The participants’ experiences were analyzed using transactional analysis in order to attend to the processes of mutual shaping that occurred as these teachers sought to engage in
dialogue with policy. The stories shared by the participants indicate that the top-down nature of the discourse of educational policy causes it to function as an authoritative discourse (Bakhtin, 1981, 1986), which seeks to prohibit dialogue and results
in the exclusion of teachers’ voices from discussions of what counts as teaching and learning in the secondary English classroom. The experiences of these teachers suggest that the policy mandates they receive privilege the teaching of low-level skills,
which do not foster critical thinking and reasoning skills. The study highlights the need for educational stakeholders to reconceptualize the discourse of policy and demonstrates the importance of preparing pre-service and in-service teachers to take on
a role in the creation and implementation of policy. The implications of this study extend beyond teacher education. Education programs for school administrators must also be adjusted to include a focus on finding ways for administrators to create spaces
for teachers to participate in discussions of policy.

▼ This study aims at exploring a new phenomenon labelled here as green populism. Building on modern theories of populism and green ideology, this case-study is focused on finding which elements of green populism are present, if any, in Greta Thunberg’s discourse. Using a Qualitative Content Analysis methodology and what is known as a coding process, it was possible to determine that all six subcategories of green populism, defined by this study as a) ecological crisis of cosmic proportion, b) victimisation of "the people", c) blame attribution to "the elite", d) green radicalisation, e) trust in science, and finally, f) intergenerational justice, can be identified in Greta Thunberg’s speeches. The analysis leads to the conclusion that Greta Thunberg is a populist actor which combines both populism thin-centred ideology and green ideology into a new phenomenon: green populism.

▼ Under-utilization, premature termination, and lack of between-session engagement have been discussed in the couple therapy literature in terms of how they negatively impact the course and outcome of couple therapy. The goal of the present research was to investigate the discourses that people use when (1) constructing meaning about the act of engaging in couple therapy; (2) constructing what constitutes a positive couple therapy experience; and (3) constructing the influence of couple therapy on daily living.
Discourse analysis, with a particular focus on interpretative repertoires (Potter & Wetherell, 1987), was used as the methodology for the three studies reported here. The data included eight semi-structured interviews with individuals who had participated in couple therapy and postings from three different online discussion forums. In study one, two interpretative repertoires – the “relationship breakdown” repertoire and the “commitment” repertoire – were constructed from the interview data. The premise of these repertoires is that couples seek couple therapy when they believe their relationship is broken and when they are committed to remaining in the relationship and resolving the problems. I argue that these interpretative repertoires can help us understand the decision or reluctance to enter couple therapy. In study two, one interpretative repertoire – “the shoe must fit” repertoire – was constructed from the interview and online data. This repertoire suggests that a particular “fit” between the couple and their therapist needs to be present in order for the couple to have a positive therapy experience. I argue that this interpretative repertoire facilitates understanding the decision to remain in or drop out of couple therapy. In study three, the interpretative repertoire “therapy life is not real life” was constructed from the interview data. According to this repertoire, couple therapy runs alongside daily life, but rarely influences it significantly. In this study, I argue that the “therapy life is not real life” repertoire helps us to better understand
between-session engagement in couple therapy. Conclusions and implications for therapists and researchers are discussed.

▼ Background and Purpose. This PhD thesis is a qualitative research project using interpretive and socio-cultural theories in a case study design. It explores medical students’ beliefs about scientific knowledge and the nature of evidence as applied to medicine, at key transition points in their education. This thesis situates current theories and conceptual models of epistemological development from the fields of psychology and education within the emergent field of medical education. Its aim is to provide insights into personal epistemological development, any curriculum barriers to such and provide insights into how students can be better supported, notably in transition periods. It addresses both a gap in the literature and the calls for more research into the development of student epistemologies in professional education. The thesis key research questions are: • What are medical students’ beliefs and understandings about the nature of scientific knowledge as applied to medicine? • What curriculum factors appear to facilitate or inhibit medical students’ epistemological development, at key transitions? Methodology. The case study design involved a four phase approach; • Phase 1: This was a critical discourse analysis of key policy and curricula texts to explore assumptions, inconsistencies or disputes relating to science and scientific content in the field of medical education. • Phase 2: This was the observation of learning episodes in preparation for Phase 3 involving participants. The purpose of Phase 2 was to situate and ground conversations with participants in real experiences. • Phase 3: This phase involved task groups and semi-structured interviews with medical students and faculty participants based at the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS). Task groups and semi-structured interviews explored individual beliefs about the nature of science and scientific evidence as applied to medicine generally and the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) curriculum content specifically. This included its contested scientific content and the nature of complexity and uncertainty in evidence based medicine. • Phase 4: This final phase involved presenting the case study findings to two other UK medical schools to explore the tentative applicability or transferability. The purpose of Phase 4 was to consider how case-specific and context bound the case study findings are. Findings. Findings suggest there is substantial variation in how medical students and faculty talk about science and evidence in medicine. This is influenced by their experiences of courses studied prior to entering medical school and their maturity in age. Medical students described how faculty informally spoke about the ambiguity within medical practice as clinical decision making, but there were very few reports of faculty explicitly speaking about the uncertain and tentative nature of scientific knowledge underpinning applied medicine. The bio-sciences were still dominant in terms of curriculum and assessment content. Where science in…

▼ Police presence on social media in Sweden has grown in recent years. New social networking tools have resulted in changes of practice in communication. This qualitative study examines how one local Police department in Sweden presents themselves on Facebook. Drawing on critical discourse analysis this paper focuses on uncovering personal values and power relations in various Police discourses but also how identity is shaped. Analyzing one year of Facebook posts from Polisen Södermalm, we identified several thematic discourses and found that content in the informal discourse reproduce some values not supported by policy or principles of public servantship. Our study contributes with qualitative analysis and findings in a field that still needs more work.

▼ Internationally recognized for and culturally self-identifying as a gender equality advocate, Sweden has seen a recent uptick in popular support among women voters for its far-right nationalist political party, the Sweden Democrats (SD). While nationalist movements are primarily distinguished by their nativist political rhetoric, academic study has consistently shown that nationalism also consistently promotes a traditional gender duality while denouncing feminism and gender equality practices. Likewise, SD also consistently opposes feminist and gender equality practices in stark contrast with mainstream Swedish political parties. This qualitative discourse analysis collected, categorized, and analyzed recent Facebook posts circulated by the Sweden Democrat Women's Association (Sverigedemokraterna kvinnoförbund) leadership to identify why women (ostensibly) served by Swedish state feminism vote for and even join SD in a leadership capacity. By utilizing constructivist theoretical frameworks of social and cultural identity with a post-structural analytical methodology focusing on problem conception, representation and dissemination, the resulting analysis shows that the dominating discursive theme is practically summarized as: "(in)security." In short, SD women perceive Sweden's (equality) feminism as unrelatable, irrelevant and/or intrusive in an "everyday" existence framed by a rapidly changing Swedish society due to record immigration, increased economic insecurity, and a weakening welfare state. In closing, three prime research areas are identified for future study: image-based content analysis of SD's political messaging, increased incorporation of security frameworks in investigative writing, as well as broadened research into how Swedish equality feminism can best include two consistently detached societal clusters: native-Swedish conservative and non-Western immigrant women.

▼ This study is about intimate femicide: The murder of a woman by a male intimate partner, namely her husband, boyfriend (dating or cohabiting), ex-husband (divorced or separated), ex-boyfriend or a rejected would-be lover. Intimate femicide has been identified as a dire social problem in South Africa. Although intimate femicide has been researched from a range of perspectives, there is a paucity of research on the discourses that women draw on to understand this crime in the context of South Africa. The primary aim of this study was to explore how women survivors of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) understand intimate femicide. This aim crystallised into the following objectives: 1) to explore how women survivors of IPV construct and understand the term intimate femicide, 2) to ascertain how women survivors of IPV understand the issue of risk of intimate femicide within an abusive relationship and 3) to investigate the discourses that women survivors of IPV draw on to understand intimate femicide. This thesis is couched in a feminist poststructuralist epistemology. Data was gathered through a
qualitative approach, using in-depth semi-structured interviews. A Foucauldian
discourse analysis was conducted on seven interviews with heterosexual women who had been in violent romantic relationships. In addition, ethical principles of anonymity and confidentiality were strictly adhered to. The findings of this study illuminate the immense difficulties that women experience in attempting to understand their level of risk while in an abusive relationship and the complexities experienced in attempting to understand intimate femicide. The
discourse analysis revealed that fairy tale romance narratives present women with the idea that there is always hope for their relationships regardless of abusive circumstances, while dark romance discourses position romantic relationships as naturally abusive and present abuse as an invalid reason to leave a relationship. These justifications, beliefs, and understandings of the abuse hamper women’s ability to understand intimate femicide. This has significant implications for scholarship in general and feminist scholarship in particular. These findings emphasise the need for additional engagement in women’s understandings of intimate femicide - a group that has largely been consigned to the periphery. Moreover, given the excessive rates of intimate femicide in South Africa, it is critical that more research is conducted in order to increase awareness of intimate femicide amongst women in violent relationships.

▼ The ability to perform local anesthesia on dental patients is an important clinical skill for a dental hygienist. When learning this procedure in an academic situation, students often practice on their peers to build their skills. There are multiple reasons why the peer practice is not ideal; consequently, educators have sought the means to simulate the practice of local anesthetic procedures without endangering others. Mixed-reality technologies offer a potential solution to the simulated procedure problem. The purpose of this research was to determine if students could learn the techniques for providing local anesthesia using a mixed-reality system that allows them to manipulate 3D objects in virtual space. Guiding research questions were: In what ways do using 3D objects allow for a greater understanding of anatomical, spatial, and dimensional acuity? Will students develop conceptual understandings regarding the application of anatomical and technical concepts through iteration? Will students demonstrate the proper technique and verbalize a level of confidence for administering local anesthesia after using the mixed-reality system? Design-based research methods allowed for multiple iterations of design, enactment,
analysis, and redesign. The first iteration focused on building a knowledge base for designing and developing virtual reality technologies for use in dental hygiene education. The second phase of research increased in technical sophistication and involved a virtual system that allowed for student interaction and manipulation of 3D objects. The interactions supported students' learning through the association of anatomical, spatial, and dimensional acuity. Built-in learner prompts promoted the understanding and identification of anatomical landmarks for performing an injection for the lower jaw. Further, the system promoted self-controlled practice and iterative learning processes. Redesign and development in the final iteration focused on design improvements of the system that included an output metric for assessing student performance, a data glove, and a marker to assist in following student interactions. Results support that students learned "while doing" in a specific immersive environment designed for dental hygiene education and they increased their level of confidence for performing a specific procedure.

of this study was to examine presidential transitions in the U.S.
van Leeuwen's Social Actor Approach was used as the conceptual
framework to understand how texts are used to recreate, shape and
transform a social practice, such as college and university
presidential leadership during times of transition.Data, covering
presidential transitions in 2015 and 2016, were collected from The
Chronicle of Higher Education. Data were analyzed using a
three-phase analytic process that helped identify patterns and
themes in the articles to uncover social actors (images) of college
and university presidents in transition. The process also allowed
for an
analysis of the discursive structures at play, leading to
findings of predominant discourses of professionalism, femininity,
masculinity, and autonomy, giving rise to images of college and
university presidents that remain traditional, masculine and at
times heroic. Further, the intersection of discourses and images
come together through our discussions to make visible discursive
tensions between the president of yesteryear and the president of
today/future. Implications and recommendations for practice are
discussed.

▼ The aim of this dissertation is to expand upon current understandings of the emergent global phenomenon that is private authority. Private authority is a process wherein private actors create, implement, and enforce rules aimed at managing global problems. As private authority is becoming increasingly important in the conduct of global governance, broadening our understanding of it will serve the field of International Relations. In this dissertation I argue that private actors are not simply outgrowths of structures or certain material conditions, rather they are purposive actors strategically pursuing an agenda. As such, explaining private authority requires an examination of the constitutive elements that underlie this social phenomenon––to which I apply an innovative conceptual and analytical framework that combines social network theory with
discourse analysis.
I applied these tools to two cases taken from the environmental sector––forests and fisheries. I found that as a result of the development of a greater networked character to environmental politics, the actors that were best able to generate and wield private authority were those that were able to construct discursive nodal points around which other competing actors could converge––at the level of identity. The construction of nodal points placed these private actors in privileged positions in-between competing networks––making them network connectors. In this position they are able to facilitate the flow of power across networks and convert such into private authority, at a rate greater than that of their competitors.
As related to the cases, I found that in forests and fisheries sectors it was the Forest Stewardship Council and Marine Stewardship Council that emerged as the most prominent and expansive private authorities. They did so as a result of their ability to construct a nodal point around their tailored definition of what sustainable development meant, and looked like in practice. This placed them in-between two powerful networks (the environmental NGO network and the industrial network), facilitating the flow of power between them, and leveraging such to expand their programs beyond that of competing programs. Thus, social position plays a crucial role in determining the success of private authority programs.

▼ In the final decade of the twentieth century the term ‘identity’ achieved ubiquity in the social sciences. Alongside this, it has become somewhat of a buzzword in wider society today. The literature review chapter of this thesis seeks to place the following research within the sociological discussion of ‘identity’. In this thesis I propose to discuss the collective (national, state, and supranational) identifications of British expatriates in contemporary Finland with reference to the following research question: How do British expatriates construct their collective identities in discourse? The ‘ethnographic discourse analysis’ that I have employed in this study seeks combine the ethnographic study of British expatriates in contemporary Finland with a discursive analysis of my data collected. The ethnographic fieldwork conducted does not follow a traditional style: rather than collecting data from various sources and compiling it together for analysis, I recognize the contribution of my own expatriate experiences and some eighteen months plus of participant observations to the qualitative interviews conducted, which comprise the corpus of my data. In total over ten hours of digital audio recordings were made, transcribed and analyzed herein. The following discursive analysis focuses upon the language and means employed by those interviewed to construct their various collective identifications. It explores the complex relationships between these discursive identity constructions and seeks to explain their subjective importance.

▼ AFRIKAANS : Hierdie studie behels drie narratiewe
Tog is min of
diskoers geanker is.
In hoofstuk een deel ek my eie boerderynarratief
In hoofstuk twee
vertrekpunt, naamlik sosiale konstruksionisme.
navorsingsdeelnemers gedoen. Diskoerse wat in die proses
geïdentifiseer is, sluit die volgende in:
gesin-van-oorsprong-diskoers; beroepsdiskoers; politieke diskoers;
misdaad-diskoers; ekonomiese diskoers; stoettelersdiskoers;

koöperasie as ’n instelling; sowel as diskoerse wat in die pers
gevoer word. Hierdie diskoerse vorm saam die konteks waarbinne
boere besluite oor hul toekoms neem.

Tog is min of
diskoers geanker is.
In hoofstuk een deel ek my eie boerderynarratief
In hoofstuk twee
vertrekpunt, naamlik sosiale konstruksionisme.
navorsingsdeelnemers gedoen. Diskoerse wat in die proses
geïdentifiseer is, sluit die volgende in:
gesin-van-oorsprong-diskoers; beroepsdiskoers; politieke diskoers;
misdaad-diskoers; ekonomiese diskoers; stoettelersdiskoers;
middelman-diskoers; patriargale diskoers; ouderdomsdiskoers;
beleggingsdiskoers; biomediese diskoers; opvoedingsdiskoers; die
koöperasie as ’n instelling; sowel as diskoerse wat in die pers
gevoer word. Hierdie diskoerse vorm saam die konteks waarbinne
boere besluite oor hul toekoms neem.
ENGLISH : This study

diversiteit, bespreek. Die teoretiese begronding is geanker in die
veld van houding-, kultuur- en visuele studies. Die kennisbasis
aangaande handboekvoorstellings in die onderskeie gemeenskappe word
ontgin.
stereotipering teenwerk.
gedemitologiseer.
drie gemeenskappe is. ENGLISH: The research goal of this study was

▼ This study investigated the most common frames used in news coverage of the Church of Scientology from 2009 to 2013. Using textual
analysis, with framing and public relations theories as lenses, this study examined recent news coverage – both print and television – to identify frames used, and the potential public relations crises the Church is currently facing due to this media exposure.
Analysis showed three major frames used during coverage, along with their corresponding sub-frames, which highlight certain aspects of the frame: Culture of Abuse (Imprisonment, Controlling, Family Disconnection, Exploitation of Children, Violence, and Financial Abuse), The Information Paradox (Conflicting Information, Simple Misunderstanding, and Non-Traditional Approach), and Leadership Issues (The Problem Lies with Leadership, Celebrity Obsession). Also uncovered were three potential public relations crises: The Mistreatment of Church Members, The Misuse of Funds, and Bad Communication Strategy. The research showed a strong strategic preference of the Church to use legal tactics or denial strategies when dealing with crises. A review of public relations theory suggests that the Church use a more open approach and also incorporate mortification strategies to accept blame and repair their damaged image.

▼ This study explored media
discourse of gender violence against Black women in Black contemporary films. Four Tyler Perry films were examined using a novel,
qualitative and analytical framework: Black Feminist
Discourse Analysis. Discourses that were studied include, but were not limited to: portrayals of gender violence and victims, character dispositions and interactions, stereotypes, relationship dynamics as well as portrayals of race, gender, sexuality and religion. The use of new and existing controlling images based on systems of race, gender, sexuality and religion were revealed in a transitional and systemic model. Common themes across the films are provided. This research closes with concluding assertions grounded by existing literature and the current study’s findings, as well as recommendations for future film writing and production and implications for social work.

▼ Employing a material culture
analysis, this dissertation functions as a general compendium on the stiletto heel, as it recounts the history of the stiletto from its introduction as a technological marvel in the post-WWII period to its present-day manifestations as a glamourous accessory. It surveys womens relations to stiletto heels and the reasons why women wear, and do not wear, them. Through a comparative cross-cultural
analysis, the study examines a group of Canadian and Italian womens uses and perceptions of stiletto heels, and reveals cultural distinctions manifested in their uses and interpretations of stilettos. The womens personal relations to and cultural interpretations of the stiletto were measured through a phenomenological
analysis of material collected through surveys, interviews and online forums. The study also considers the general sentiments stilettos engender in regard to the portrayal of women in society and the feminist discourses that the stiletto challenges and reinforces.
