▼ Companies and organisations are increasingly exposed to a market environment full of turbulence and disruption. Perry (2017), for instance, shows that only 60 companies were present in the Fortune 500 in 1955 as well as in 2017, meaning that 88% of the companies from 1955 went bankrupt, merged with (or were overtaken by) other firms or were not able to meet the Fortune 500 revenue threshold anymore. It can be stated that many companies have not been able to adapt or to take advantage of changing market situations as they fail to scout and invest in new areas of growth or keep applying existing business models to new market segments (Anthony et al.,2016; Zook, 2014) Lately, design has received increased attention from companies that want to anticipate on market turbulence. Design is seen as a way to overcome creative destruction, helping companies to maintain their competitiveness in the marketplace. From multiple accounts, design and design thinking are seen to add value to businesses, organisations, (
innovation) processes, products and services. However, the fact that the added value of design and design thinking is mainly described by anecdotal cases of businesses and organisations that successfully make use of design and design thinking seems to ignore the
process that precedes the situation whereby design is fully operationalised in and adds value to
innovation processes. It is therefore that this research project is executed with the aim of exploring the implications of design when being embedded in a company’s
innovation process. Based on current collaborations between the Delft University of Technology’s IDE faculty and various businesses, three companies have been found suitable for examination in the context of this research project. As a result, three cases can be described through conducting empirical research, whereby further insights into these cases are provided through conducting two rounds of interviews. The data derived during this research project show that a design project is seen to be initiated by a non-design project brief, that design is positioned in the Fuzzy Front End of
innovation processes and that design is employed in a separated type of department. It also becomes clear that an emerging disconnection emerges between the design output and the
innovation process that is already put in place. It is found that this disconnection can be traced back to a barrier that is positioned within the higher ranks of companies as well as a barrier is perceived in the way companies have set-up their organisational structure relative to the design output. It is concluded that design should become an ‘implemented reality’ and it should be incorporated into the ‘thought processes of a company’s organisational structure’ when companies want to successfully make use of design with the aim of arriving at outcomes other than their current
innovation processes are producing. Therefore, companies should adapt, revise and/or redesign each aspect of their
innovation process that is either…

▼ For organizations to achieve their goals and objectives, they have to constantly adjust to
their environment. This environment is constantly changing and so it makes it imperative
for organizations to continuously adapt their activities in order to assure survival (Aosa,
1997). Different forces take on prominence in shaping competition in each industry. Each
industry has an underlying structure or set of fundamental economic and technical
characteristics, that gives rise to these competitive forces. Funeral sector in Kenya has
both publicly and privately owned morgues, the following are some of the funeral homes
that provide an inclusive package of morgue, coffins, lowering gears, viewing area, a
religious services room or area, public address systems, video cameras seats and hearse
in Nairobi county namely; Lee Funeral Home, Montezuma & Monalisa Funeral home,
Umash Funeral home, Kenyatta funeral home and Chiromo Mortuary. Studies done
(Waithaka 2001 and Muriithi 2009) indicate that privately owned funeral homes have a
competitive edge compared to the public managed. This study sought to determine
factors which influence the choice of innovation strategies adopted by funeral homes in
Kenya? The research was conducted through a census. The population for the study
consisted of all privately and public owned morgues in Nairobi county, funeral homes
offering services. There are 24 funeral homes in Nairobi County and all were under
study. The study used both primary and secondary data. The target respondents were
morgue directors/ superintendents, marketing managers and administrators. The data
collected from the respondents was analyzed using simple statistical tools and presented
in frequencies percentages, mean and standard deviation. This study therefore
recommends that these firms should incorporate several innovative strategies especially
on the marketing area. They should adopt channels including print, direct mail, websites,
social media and email marketing to reach a larger market niche. The study further
recommends that these funeral homes should partnered with other institutions giving
similar services like the insurance companies which helps them reach a large clientele
and makes the business more viable. This would bring clients more closely to their
services.

▼ In this thesis,
process models for
innovation in complex large-scale financial organizations are contrasted with models in literature. As a result, elements which should be included in
process models for
innovation to increase the innovative capacity of these organizations are presented. To illustrate this, research was conducted at the ING Customer Experience Center, part of ING Operations and IT Banking. ING, a premium bank in financial services is
subject to specific dynamics in its environment that affect the innovative capacity of the organization. The structure of the organization proves to be very complex (i.e. a system with multiple interconnected elements and different ways of operations) which complicates institutionalization of processes models. Core competence of these premium banks in current society is trust and for this reason the organizations are highly risk-averse in delivering new products, services and business propositions Specific enablers and barriers in the organization are present that affect the innovative capacity of the organization. Coordination mechanisms that evaluate on output prove to be perverse tools for
innovation and operational excellence within organizations should be integrated thoughtfully with
innovation to reduce the lead-time for delivery. A
process model can only be successful if a culture, divisional climates and resources are created that allow for
innovation. Leadership in the organization has to envision
innovation and create room for corporate entrepreneurship, only then will a
process model for
innovation function and can the innovative capacity of an organization increase. In addition, a
process model should have a spiral character that emphasizes the continuous and evolutionary effort of
innovation. No beginning or end of the
process is present and failures may lead to success in other environments. When focusing on early problem structuring and determining objectives, organizational strategies and potential futures, progress and substance of the endeavor is believed to be achieved. Uniform, adaptable, flexible phases and
process steps are required to allow for feedback and feed forward and quickly evaluate on feasibility of the effort. In this way the model can be fit to specific contexts, environments and project scales. A note is that radical
innovation is not likely to be linked to organizational strategies and core competences, and thus will not likely flow through models. A
process model for
innovation can only be supportive if
innovation is institutionalized in the genes of the organization. Hence,
innovation should be supported and facilitated by top management directly. Differences between modeling of
innovation in practice and theory is the fact that models are
subject to specific organizational and environmental dynamics. A design of the elements which a
process model for
innovation should include, is constructed and in this model it is important that the continuous and evolutionary character of
innovation is emphasized. By performing transparent…

▼ Since China embraced the “Open Door” policy in 1978, innovation has been an increasingly important factor for the Chinese economy. China is now the third largest country in the world league table of patent applications. China has also received large amounts of foreign direct investment, much of it from major Western innovative companies. In the earlier years of the Open Door policy, much of the involvement of Western companies was through joint ventures. International joint ventures are still important, and it is believed have substantially enhanced China's innovative capability. It is the contention of this research that there is a direct correlation between the arrivals of Sino-Western JVs and China's increased innovation capabilities. This is an important area of study as China moves towards becoming a developed economy. The gap in research at present is in applying innovation theory to China and to JVs. The thesis explores the contribution of Sino-Western JVs to the development of China's innovative capabilities. A model of the innovation process is developed, and eight important factors that are considered to enhance a company's innovative capacity, are derived from the model. The factors, expressed as propositions, are: 1: Becoming part of a wide innovative network in its industry 2: Taking part in an open innovation system in its industry 3: Relating closely to universities, and particularly their research laboratories 4: Relating closely to research institutions 5: Developing a social atmosphere conducive to innovation 6: Developing a strong strategic planning system with innovation as a focus 7: Having innovation as a primary objective of both partners at the outset of the joint venture 8: Focusing on developing intellectual property To investigate whether these propositions were accepted by Sino-Western joint ventures, 40 semi-structured interviews were conducted in ten international (Sino-western) joint ventures in China. In general the interviews provided support for the propositions. However, some reservations were expressed. Executives were reluctant to engage in open (collaborative) innovation, preferring to seek patents for developed intellectual property. They also perceived the main objective of the Western partners to be commercial success rather than innovation, although the Chinese partners were very much innovation-orientated. The research contributes to our understanding of the contribution of Sino-western JVs to the innovative capability of Chinese companies, and provides support for most of the propositions identified in the literature. Respondents remarked that most of the propositions would apply also to self-standing companies in China, and suggested that joint ventures could stimulate innovation in indigenous Chinese companies. In addition to providing a historical overview of the development of innovation in China, developing an innovation process model and testing it in the Chinese context, the thesis makes important policy and practical recommendations to Chinese organizations.

▼ Research and development service firms (RDSFs), a subsector of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS), provide contract R&D services to third parties for payment. They are a major generator of new technological knowledge serving manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries. Their innovation activities are in the up-stream of the knowledge creation value chain. This explorative study focuses on R&D service firms and their innovation activities. We have adopted a qualitative research design seeking to address the need to strengthen theory-building on service innovation, and in particular to extend the limited empirical evidence on RDSFs innovation. The literature on innovation in services and KIBS constitutes a strong theoretical foundation of this study. It provides the conceptual tools upon which we develop a working definition of RDSFs and ground our analysis. We examine the long-term development of the UK's R&D Service Sector using secondary data. This builds a 'real-life context' for case studies on innovation in RDSFs. Qualitative research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 32 firms in the UK. Analysis revealed the heterogeneous nature of these firms by identifying four main business models. Moreover, our findings point towards a clearly defined typology of RDSFs based on a combination of innovation drivers and outcomes. Four fundamentally different types of RDSFs can be identified: Technology-based innovation exploiters, Science-focused innovation explorers, Client-led innovation integrators, and Open innovation translators. This thesis contributes to the research on the supply side of R&D outsourcing by elaborating the development, business and innovation activities of RDSFs. It also contributes to understanding innovation in specific KIBS sub-sector by providing empirical evidence on the innovation processes of RDSFs.

Firefighters have one of the most dangerous working conditions currently existing in Sweden, and with the amount of difficulty’s they often encounter during the call-outs, makes it a good organization to implement an innovation process on.
This thesis is an innovation process applied to a fire department in order to see if a solution could solve one of their problems. The goal was to develop a solution to facilitate rescue problems in extreme situations. The method was divided into three steps to achieve a result. First we searched for a problem that we later on selected, but also an environmental scanning analysis was performed to gain insight on the relevant circumstances. Later on a brainstorming session was done to solve this problem, and with the generated ideas we developed a few concepts and with these we tried as far as possible to fill the fire departments requirements. The next step was to select the concept that was considered best suited to solve the problem, which then we made into a prototype in step number three. The result of this thesis was a tool that is adapted for the firefighter’s efforts to rescue an unconscious person in a burning house. When an unconscious person has a weight that exceeds the firefighter’s capacity and therefore making the procedures take longer time, this puts firefighter´s health in more danger than necessary. The purpose of the tool is to make their job more effective and simplify the procedure.

▼ Innovation is essential for organisational competitiveness and success (e.g. Edwards, Delbridge & Munday 2005). However, the existing research mainly focuses on the radical innovation of products; few studies have examined the incremental improvement of processes in relation to daily work (Stamm 2003; Axtell et al. 2000; Genaidy et al. 2010). It is therefore imperative to study the process innovation of employees in the workplace. Employee innovation can be viewed as a process comprising different stages (Scott & Bruce 1994). However, existing research tends to combine different stages of the innovation process together, resulting in erroneous conclusions regarding the effects of organisational factors on different stages of innovation (Magadley & Birdi 2012). The current study therefore aims to examine the effects of organisational factors including the quality of the supervisor–employee relationship, internal communication, external communication, monetary reward, non-monetary recognition and training on the different stages of employee innovation behaviour that produces incremental refinements and improvements to daily work processes.
Using a convenience sample, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 1,299 organisation employees across four industries in China. The data were analysed using multiple regressions to test the hypotheses. The results show that organisational factors have different effects on the stages of employee innovation. Specifically, the quality of the supervisor–employee relationship, external communication, non-monetary recognition and training were found to play a significant role in facilitating opportunity exploration, while non-monetary recognition and training encouraged idea generation and experimentation. Moreover, the quality of the supervisor–employee relationship, internal communication, external communication, non-monetary recognition and training helped to distribute and promote ideas. The findings suggest that business managers could utilise organisational resources to improve the innovative behaviour of employees in daily work rather than focusing solely on product innovation. Business managers should also use the correct organisational factors to target different stages of employee innovation in order to maximise employee innovative behaviour. One limitation of the research lies in its focus on China, which restricted the generalisability of the findings in different situations. Another limitation resulted from using the quantitative method, through which the mechanisms of how organisational factors affect the different stages of employee process innovation could not be revealed. Future research could use qualitative data to shed light in this regard.
This research paves the way for future studies to explore whether the findings also hold for other countries and cultures. Future research is needed to consider the direction of the associations in order to provide evidence of causality.

▼ This Dissertation presents a comprehensive Process Map for innovation [the Map], based on a comparison and synthesis of the reported steps for creating in many disciplines, including Engineering Design and Buddhist Meditation. The Map is presented in three stages and seven detailed steps, following a review of the status quo of innovation in Engineering Design from literature and Industry surveys, and can be said to provide the first natural and common language for innovation. The application of Buddhist Methods is a key feature in the development of the Map, introducing a consistency and hierarchy, as well as co-evolutionary and eco-systemic aspect to academic understanding of innovation and its management, which has been lacking in models proposed in literature and Tools such as TRIZ in the past. Presentation of the Map theory and Map itself is followed by reports of its testing and proof of concept with an Industry Collaborator from 2006-10, including: [i] benchmarking of ‘Systematic Innovation’ [ii] an Industry Pilot Test comparing teaching of TRIZ with the Innovation Map and [iii] results of four nine-month periods of application in training, coaching, workshops, Games and GameDays. The Map is shown to improve high-end technical innovation in corporate environments, by streamlining the way questions are asked, and answers found and evaluated. It is directly responsible for unprecedented solutions achieved by Engineering Design teams addressing long-standing problems in very short time frames. Facilitated sessions using the Map achieve an ROI up to 2847% in each session and are estimated to have contributed billions of Euros value to the Industry Collaborator over four years of testing. In comparison with other options, the Map provides cheaper, simpler and more elegant innovation incorporating Tools, process and potential culture for any kind of User - Company, Consultant, Innovation Manager or Academic.

Research question: How can DHL Freight in Eskilstuna, by applying incremental innovations generate a higher customer value and customer experience in the part where the logistics process creates customer value for individuals? Purpose: The purpose with this study is to do a research and generate suggestions to as how DHL Freight in Eskilstuna can generate, by using innovation customer value and customer experience for DHL’s private customers. Z organizacijskimi in tehničnimi inovacijami podjetja zmanjšajo porabo virov, s produktnimi inovacijami povečajo stopnjo zadovoljitve potreb. Tako z maksimizacijo vrednosti vzpostavljajo in ohranjajo konkurenčnost. Magistrska naloga temelji na slovenskem vzorcu Raziskave o proizvodni dejavnosti (EMS). Raziskovali smo, kako na stopnjo produktnih inovacij v podjetjih vplivajo tehnične in organizacijske inovacije.
Value is the difference between the resources used and the quality in terms of meeting customer needs. With technical and non-technical process innovations, companies reduce the consumption of resources, and with product innovations, they increase the level of satisfaction of needs. In this way, companies establish and sustain competitiveness by maximizing value. We based our master's thesis on the Slovenian sample of the European Manufacturing Survey (EMS) and examined the impact of technical and non-technical process innovation on product innovation. Based on the findings, we provided guidelines for implementation in practice.

▼ Today's business environment has become increasingly competitive, which is partly due to an expansion in globalization coupled with higher consumer demands. This places greater demands on flexibility and consciously of innovation. Traditional innovation measurement focuses on measuring output, which means that it can take years to evaluate and map the innovation process. The aim of the following project is to identify activities that enable companies to monitor and develop their innovative activities. The metrics are tools that help organizations control and develop innovations, to strengthen their innovation process. The study was initiated with a systematic literature review with the objective to highlight important aspects of innovation and innovation measurement. Empirical data was collected through the qualitative method, where 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted. Three of the interviews were with researchers that have knowledge in the field of innovation. The remaining interviews were conducted with employees at case company Dynapac. Based on the theoretical and empirical findings, a definition of innovation has been identified for the manufacturing sector. Within the case company, the challenge was to analyse the current metrics and develop future metrics. The researchers reveal the importance of implementing a measurement system that drives activities related to the development of innovative work and capabilities, to ensure continuity. Ten metrics have been identified for the innovation process. These have been categorized into input, process, and output to guide companies in the innovation process. The metrics were categorized by four types: capability, organization, market and financial. The objectives with the metrics are to capture the full range of the innovation process and the activities that are relevant to each metrics. The metrics are actively promoting keeping track or supporting reflection about innovation activities.

▼ As innovation plays a predominant role in gaining competitive advantage, profit driving companies within the private sector have found ways to use innovation to succeed on the market. Although the public sector works according to a different set of logic, the demand for innovation within the public sector has been found to be growing due to increasing user needs, as well as increasing expectations on the effectiveness, availability and the quality of the public services. The district administrations, that are partly responsible for delivering such services in the City of Stockholm, face currently also various challenges such as a demographical development. A central strategy for innovation currently exists, but as such is equally important as systematical processes in order to build a long-term lasting capacity for innovation, it was unclear to this point if systematical processes are used at the district administrations to actualize innovation. Therefore, this research investigated how innovation was actualized at the district administrations in the City of Stockholm in order to identify if systematical processes were used, as well as to find which factors potentially hinder innovation from being actualized with systematics. Only the implications of the top-management were examined and the research was conducted as a case study of qualitative sort where interviews with top-executives, projects leaders and managers were conducted in the process. This research found that the district administrations neither address nor facilitate innovation in a systematic manner, as systematical processes were found to be absent for such purposes. Innovation is rather actualized in an unstructured manner, as no systematics was found to be used in relation to any of the stages in the innovation process. Among the factors that were found to affect the use of systematic processes was the absence of a climate that facilitates innovation, the lack of know-how knowledge for managing innovation, as well as communication deficiencies. Internal strategies were found to be absent and continuous learning was found to not be facilitated adequately, as well as knowledge in general was found to not be sufficiently enhanced. Heavy workloads and emergency driven operations cause difficulties to actualizing innovation with systematics. Finally, as much of the daily work at district administrations is budget-driven and as innovation is not referred to as explicit objectives, innovation is overshadowed by the tasks that are related to the daily operations at the district administrations.

▼ Uncertainty is a widely recognized phenomenon in
innovation and it is a main factor influencing decision making regarding innovations. This holds in particular for emerging technologies (Nelson & Winter, 1977; Meijer, 2008; Van Merkerk and Van Lente, 2005), like nanotechnology.
In this thesis, it is investigated what is the influence of perceived uncertainties from different stakeholders (in the Netherlands) during the
innovation process of nanomedical products. The influence of the uncertainties is determined by the activities which are being executed in order to decrease the uncertainties. By means of conducting interviews with several companies who initiate a technological
innovation themselves and a variety of other stakeholders involved in the
innovation process, the influence of uncertainties is investigated. For each interviewee, a reconstruction is made of the sorts of activities which are being executed in order to reduce specific categories of uncertainty in one or more phases of the
innovation process or in general. For the firms (which develop a technological
innovation themselves), there is mainly acted upon economic and technological uncertainty and least upon regulatory uncertainty. Difference in this, is that firms developing pharmaceuticals pay more attention to external communication than medical device firms do. This difference is also analyzed between large firms respectively SMEs. An important activity in the search and select phase for all firms is doing market analysis, to acquire knowledge about other competitors, technologies and potential future markets. The other stakeholders mainly perform activities to reduce technological uncertainty, for instance by supporting or doing technological research. Lastly, the nanotechnological aspect is for firms generally no reason to be more uncertain about the possible risks than at the development of any other medicine, because of the strict regulation. For other stakeholders (like the government, a notified body, the health care inspectorate) there is more uncertainty about this issue, for which important activities are: doing technological research and communicate externally.

▼ The purpose of this literature review is to investigate and discuss: (1) the characteristics measured by innovation assessments, and (2) the comparison of characteristics measured by creativity assessments with those of innovation assessments. This will be done by: (1) collecting creativity and innovation assessments, and (2) comparing and contrasting the characteristics measured by each assessment. This study reveals that innovation assessments do not measure the innovation process in its entirety. The findings show that creativity and innovation assessments lack in assessing the entire innovation process, assessing the innovation process on an individual level, and assessing an individual's change or growth in the innovation process. Based on the findings, future research needs to be done to develop an individualized innovation assessment.

▼ This research uses a novel construction material (lime-pozzolan concrete) and real-world project (a school) as a vehicle for investigating the implementation or applied-innovation process in construction. The implementation of new technologies at a product-level is recognised to be an antecedent of technological change in the construction industry. A ‘real world’ construction project aiming to implement a novel lime-pozzolan concrete in the field, has been used as a process-tracing case study. Rigorous analysis of this case study project, expressly focusing on project-level communication, has shown the implementation of innovative and sustainable materials to be a complex, socio-technical process. With the aim of identifying opportunities to improve project-level design processes in order to support the uptake of innovation and sustainable solutions, twelve high-level theories have been built on twenty-five emergent themes. Collectively these insights demonstrate that implementation processes, once initiated, are experiential, social, contextual, active, interactive, temporal, intentional and mutually constituted phenomena. On the strength of empirical findings this thesis argues for a radical shift in managerial attention from the outcome of the process to the process itself; specifically focused on the experience of the design team as process participants. Laboratory testing and initial field trials have demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing structural grade lime-pozzolan concretes with 28-day compressive strengths of up to 50MPa. The lime-pozzolan concretes were ternary combinations of hydraulic lime (NHL5), ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS) and silica fume (SF). The use of NHL5 in conjunction with pozzolanic materials has been shown to be a viable ‘low-carbon’ alternative to CEMI or CEMIII/A in certain circumstances, although this work has demonstrated that the potential savings in the embodied CO2 and energy of lime-pozzolan concretes are highly dependent on the boundaries of the analysis. Moreover the potential for lime-pozzolan concrete with a lower still CO2 and energy intensity than any concretes tested to date has been identified.

▼ This thesis was performed in assignment of Alpha. One for their new eye tracking prediction platform expoze.io. The project started of with the brief; What does the future of expoze.io hold? This indicates the need for a future vision. In order to create a future vision the company purpose must first be researched, the reason why they exist. The purpose of the company is often related to the customer needs, therefore it is important to understand the subjective value that the product offers to the customer. Therefore before the preliminary research the research questions proposed were; What does the future roadmap of expoze.io look like? What is the future vision for the predictive eye tracking platform expoze.io? What is the purpose of expoze.io? What is the customer value of expoze.io? What are market gaps / differentiating factors in the market? The preliminary research revealed that for the roadmap to succeed a
process integrating the roadmap should be designed. This
process should also fit the company as it is still a startup, therefore it must be time, effort and cost efficient. Another insight was that there needs to be a shift to a more human oriented mindset within the company. These insights led to the addition of the following research questions. What does the future roadmap of expoze.io look like? How can the roadmap assist in adapting the product to be more Human? How could the roadmap be best adopted into the operation of the expoze.io team? (
process) How to build an
innovation process that fits a small startup team? cost, time, effort efficient How to create a shift to a more human oriented mindset in this
process? How to make sure that ideas selected fit the needs of the customers? Through customer interviews it became evident that the subjective customer value that expoze.io brings to the customer is confidence. Through eye tracking analysis the customer gains confidence in their advertisements and if they will perform in the market as they would like it to perform. It also brings confidence in presenting their analysis to their bosses or clients. This in turn makes the purpose of expoze.io “bringing confidence to marketeers”. By accompanying the purpose with the insights from competitor analysis, customer research, trend analysis and market research the future vision could be created. Through brainstorming the following vision was proposed; “Bringing the brains to the art of marketing”. This vision was tested through a workshop with the employees at Alpha.One. The workshop also ensured the involvement of the people working at Alpha. One in the creation of the roadmap, it also facilitated communication about everyone’s ideas about the future path of the company. The vision was chosen by the most people and is therefore implemented into the roadmap. The roadmap was based on the vision that was created accompanied by the insights from the research to fill in the steps that need to be taken in order to reach that future. The core strategy of the roadmap is to create confidence by facilitating deeper…

▼ Background: Due to several threats that are facing our planet a hybrid business form has emerged throughout the recent decade, the social enterprise (SE). A SE is created with one purpose, to create social value. However, it is also aiming for financial profit to be able to fulfill its social mission. The dual focus of SEs differentiates them from other business forms and much remains to understand how they manage this over time. Little is known about SE business models (BMs) and how they develop over time. Problem Discussion: Globalization has led to increased business competition, which in turn has led to an increased attention of business model innovation (BMI) as a tool to create and/or sustain competitive advantage. Since BMI can be a key process in all industries it is relevant to understand BMI in order to manage it successfully and achieve a good result. Unfortunately little attention has been given to the BMI process, how BMI unfolds over time. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how BMI unfolds over time at GodEl. This will be done by: (1) looking at how the BM components have changed over time from the establishment of the firm until present, and (2) identifying main events that have triggered these changes. Methodology: This study is a qualitative single case study. The data has been collected via 16 semi-structured interviews, two focus groups, as well as via historical archives. The findings have been analyzed in a within-case analysis. The case organization is GodEl, a Swedish electric retailer. Empirical Findings: The findings contain a complete review of the company history and BMI between 2001 and 2015, based on the collected data. It is structured in identified time periods. Conclusions: It can be concluded that BMI at GodEl between its establishment and present day has been achieved by small incremental changes in the BM components one step at a time. It has been a continuous process of trial-and- error. Future Research: Further research is needed in order to deepen the understanding of BMI process.

▼ This dissertation studies the sources and patterns of
innovation in the services sector. A typological theory of service innovations and their respective
innovation patterns is developed to address the lack of a theoretical basis in prior service
innovation classifications. It is propositioned that the differences in service
innovation patterns will manifest themselves along two characteristics of an innovative service concept: the sources of
innovation ideas and the standardization of service. A theory-based inductive, qualitative, building block approach will be adopted for the typological theory development. The technological trajectories theory, the resource-based view of the firm, and the systems of
innovation research tradition will be drawn on for specifying the expected
innovation patterns by types of service innovations. Two service
innovation types out of four in the typological theory are be subjected to empirical analysis by the method of focused, structured case comparison which also combines within-case analysis. Case studies of service concept innovations in four Estonian companies are conducted. The results of the empirical analysis indicate that differences in innovations patterns can be discerned between the two types of innovations with regard to their reliance on the external actors and resources of
innovation, whereas a "winning" pattern of in-house organization of the
innovation process appears to emerge that is common to both types of innovations. Policy recommendations that are formulated are carried by the idea that, for fostering
innovation in the services, the curricula and syllabi of higher education institutions must be better aligned with the needs for professional knowledge by the service firms, and they must provide insight into the frontiers of research in the pertinent fields of study. The contribution of this dissertation to the scholarship of services
innovation is seen in its fine specification of concepts and a well-delineated focus of case studies, which form a strong basis for finer measurement practices in potential continuation research projects.

▼ An increase in societal challenges is creating more pressure for the public service to meet the needs of its citizens and from the society in general. The greatest challenges that Piteå kommun face are the ageing population and the need of competence provision. This essay aims to examine how Piteå kommun utilizes social innovation. The empiric material has been collected through a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with key figures in Piteå kommun who are well versed in the use of social innovation. The theoretical framework, from which the analysis is based on, is based on Murray, Caulier-Grice och Mulgan’s (2010) theory of the social innovation process. The main results show that the informants share aconsistent view of what an innovation friendly climate should consist of, but how to get there is blurry and difficult to put in to words. The result also show that a politically governed organization faces a challenge when it comes to long-term efforts of social innovation since systematic change is dependent of a stable innovation process to get substantial effect. Among the informants, and in earlier research, social innovation is attributed a wide meaning which can either leads to boosted creativity and ideas or create uncertainty and a disinclination to make use of social innovation in different workplaces since the term seems unfamiliar. Suggestions for further research is examining and comparison of the utilization of social innovation in other municipalities. Another area that can be researched further is how the social innovation process is featured in the nonprofit sector and the private sector, which can lead to insights in how the sectors can collaborate between each other more easily.
▼ Background: Existing literature has declared migrant integration as social stress putting communities under pressure. Dynamics of social innovations and digital technologies can provide solutions to the pressing matter of migrant integration, yet the academic literature is obscure about processes that organisations employ in this matter. Purpose: This study aims to investigate how the process of digital social innovation unfolds in organisations. The main purpose of this study seeks to answer the research question: How do organisations undertake the process of digital social innovations in relation to migrant integration? Method: To answer the research question, a qualitative research approach was chosen. Multiple case study was carried out, and the empirical data was gathered through semi-structured interviews. The content of the company websites and other additional material were used as a complementary source of information. The scope of participants was delimited to Sweden and Germany due to a high level of immigration in these countries. After data collection, the analysis was carried out in an abductive manner. Conclusion: The findings showed that the social innovation process is intertwined with the context where the actor acts as a mediator between the two. Two models were combined to gain both theoretical and practical insights without excluding one another. A suggested digital social innovation process model was then introduced in pursuit of providing a model that could be used in academia to annex scattered literature and to use the model in practice as a foundation for the innovation process.

▼ Responsible Innovation seems to undoubtedly becoming an inexorable and necessary trend. That is, society calls for a higher embedding of values and ethics within the innovation process, especially with regards to sustainability. However, so far practical application of Responsible Innovation frameworks remains mostly at policy or academic level, while it is still scarce at firm level. Furthermore, innovation process' enhancement in the highly-competitive automotive industry has become a hot topic in the last decade, especially given the increasing pressures from consumers and governments, towards more sustainable vehicles while still maintaining competitive pricing. However, not all car manufacturers can be considered as highly-innovative as it may appear from an industry with such a tough and complex environment and technical development pace. This thesis carries out a case study of one of those firms (SEAT), and through a benchmarking framework, it intends to point out the most significant performance improvement areas when compared to the best-in-class firms from a cross-industry range, regarding the innovation processes of new product development. The emphasis is placed on Responsible Innovation, supported by other emerging approaches such as Open Innovation and Co-creation. This benchmarking process lead to an elaboration of a best-practices code for 'product innovation' processes’ management, which can be extrapolated to other firms of the automotive industry, as well as the future development of innovation culture change strategies to be carried out within this firm. Coevally, lessons are intended to be applicable to other firms, for allowing cross-industry learning. These lessons, in the form of best-practices, entitled measures for: increasing participation of all relevant internal and external stakeholders, improving the anticipation for the bi-directional interaction of innovation and the socio-technical context, enriching and deepening the deliberation process, and increasing the capability for responsiveness and reflexivity. These are extensively enlisted as recommendations both for academic and company purposes.

▼ Over the last few decades, the rising concern of environmental protection and consumersâ increasing environmental consciousness have brought fundamental impacts to enterprises in the world. Environmental protection has become one of corporate social responsibilities, and in the meantime, one of the opportunities for profitability. Among all resources in organizations, human resource plays the most important role in keeping corporate competitive advantage. In order to create and maintain corporate competitive advantage, traditional human capital also has to be transformed into green human capital that possesses the ability to develop green
innovation. The purpose of this research is to investigate how green human capital will be influential on the level green
innovation, and how it actually leads to corporate competitive advantage. The study uses in-depth interviews and questionnaires to collect data for the analysis. The results reveal that green human capital strategic value has a positive impact on green product
innovation and green product
innovation has a mediating effect in the relationship between green human capital strategic value and responsiveness. On the other hands, green human capital uniqueness has a positive impact on green
process innovation and green
process innovation plays a mediating effect in the relationship between green human capital uniqueness and cost advantage.

▼ Research focusing on service
innovation has seen a
significant growth in the last two decades, yet the research on
KIBS
innovation - and especially on
innovation in the creative
industries, like advertising - remains rather limited. Due to the
increasingly competitive business environment, how KIBS firms
co-create with their clients to develop more innovative products or
services is becoming more important. Therefore, this research uses
the UK advertising industry as a basis to explore the nature of
advertising
innovation, the service
innovation process and the
co-creation within it, and how KIBS project innovativeness
influences new service development. The literature on service
innovation, co-creation and innovativeness involved in developing
services or products provides the theoretical foundation for this
research. It uses multiple case studies methodology and is based on
45 interviews with advertising managers. The findings of this
thesis can be divided into three key areas. First, this study
conceptualises the advertising
innovation and advertising
innovation dimensions and identifies the importance of content
innovation and two-sided interface in advertising
innovation.
Second, the
innovation process in the advertising industry can be
divided into five phases: the problem diagnosis phase, the creative
process, the production phase, the commercialisation phase, and the
evaluation and learning phase. (In more detail, the
innovation
process can be divided into fourteen development stages: client
brief, understanding client business, problem diagnosis, strategy
planning, creative briefing, idea generation, idea testing, idea
selection, idea amplification, production, testing, launch,
evaluation, and learning.) This research examines what is meant by
co-creation, and identifies how co-creation changes over the course
of the service
innovation process - where co-creation activities
and tasks, and the roles of service firms and their clients, vary
across stages of service production. It finds that co-creation
between advertising companies and their clients follows a
'W-shaped' curve pattern, with the most intense co-creation in the
problem diagnosis phase and the least in the production phase. (The
practitioners in these KIBS assert that having too much co-creation
activities in the idea generation stage tends to develop uncreative
ideas.) Third, as the tasks of KIBS are to fuse generic knowledge
with local and special knowledge related to specific problems, to
develop problem solutions for their clients, this study
conceptualises KIBS project innovativeness as involving two
parameters: (1) the knowledge and experience of the problem itself
(which relates to problem novelty); (2) the knowledge and
experience of developing innovative solutions (solution
innovativeness), and explores how KIBS project innovativeness
influences new service development. Based on the analysis of KIBS
project innovativeness, this study develops a typology of project
development in KIBS firms, which includes four types of projects:
routine…

The analysis of creativity and innovation as concepts closely linked to organizations began to be studied in the twentieth century, where were studies reporting its importance on personal and motivational terms and even within groups and / or social systems. Still, the intimate relationship established between these two concepts has been taken into account since, in organizations, it is possible that one affects the other and vice versa. Taking into account the influence that innovation and creativity postulate on individuals and on their organizational performance, we considered emerging to adopt this theme and adapt it to the fisheries sector - an essential sector for the economic growth of our country and in particular, some regions. Conserveira do Sul - Partner Company of the research - is located in Olhão, one of the fishing zones with the greatest influence in the Algarve and bases its business in the capture and production of high quality pâtés and preserved foods by combining traditional methods to its advanced manufacturing process enshrines them a final product of excellence. Still, we have focused the diffusion of innovation as a tool / process indispensable for the proper functioning of the organization in the acceptance of new innovations where we were able to conclude that the company under research - Conserveira do Sul - is endowed with an informal innovation diffusion process, appropriate…

In the globalised context of modern industry, innovation has become a major challenge for enterprises. Innovation should not only be seen as a way to sustain long-term activities, but also as an essential component of daily management activities of organizations. To address this problem, especially in the Innovation Center of Pierre Fabre Laboratories, the chosen approach is located at the crossroads of two engineerings. Enterprise engineering is the first prism of our study, detecting what is part of the daily activities in the running processes, while innovation engineering reveals what is specific to an innovation process. At the crossroads of these two engineerings, a specific alignment identifies an original management approach focused on the innovation process and promoting the detection, diagnosis and assessment of potential innovation in the daily activities and projects. All the proposals for an innovation management have been applied to the Innovation Center, a breeding ground for our experimentation, highlighting original areas for improvement.

▼ This thesis is about How External Uncertainties Affect the Innovation Process. Written during the spring term of 2020 by Simon Algotsson and Johan Öhlander. The thesis main goal is to generate knowledge about the properties and sources of external uncertainties and create an understanding of how they can come to affect an innovation process. This research encourages organizations that are planning to participate, or currently resides in an innovation process to give it a read. Anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of the impact of external uncertainties may use our findings as a source of inspiration. The research question we have answered is: How do external uncertainties affect the innovation process? As the title and research question shows, innovation and uncertainties are the two most common denominators in this work. Presented in the theoretical framework is previous research done concerning the innovation process, and what it consists of. As well as how other researchers describe different types of uncertainties. We have also constructed our own model of how external uncertainties can give rise to internal uncertainties. For this type of research, a qualitative method has been selected, since it enabled us to go in-depth in one specific innovation process. We have conducted two interviews with the CEO and CFO of a company referred to as Gamma. They have both shared their own perspectives of the innovation process their company has gone through. The data collected from the interview has been transcribed separately and is later presented in the empirical evidence. The final sections of this thesis include the analysis and the conclusion. In these chapters we draw parallels between the research presented in the theoretical framework and Gamma's innovation process. The process we have investigated for this thesis encountered several uncertainties, both internal and external. In the analysis we present the authors own model of how external uncertainties came to affect Gamma's innovation process. The conclusion discusses the significant findings of the research such as how Gamma's innovation turned into a 'black hole' for the profits generated by the company.

▼ Drawing upon the Communities of Innovation (COI) framework, this study seeks to identify the composition (functional demographic diversity), team climate (vision, participatory safety, task orientation, support for innovation), and process (group reflection, group flow, group conflict, dynamic expertise) variables that influence team-level innovation. Using data from 15 business school teams enrolled in a class on innovation and entrepreneurship, I explore the extent to which the proposed composition, team climate, and process variables discriminate between high-ranking and low-ranking innovative teams. I also investigate the degree to which these variables are conceptually and empirically distinct. Given the relative importance of dynamic expertise as a group process, I seek to answer how dynamic expertise is fostered in COIs. Finally, this study seeks to answer the degree to which the proposed composition, team climate, and process variables influence team level innovation. I found significantly greater levels of vision, participatory safety, support for innovation, group reflection, group flow, and dynamic expertise and significantly lower levels of group conflict in high-ranking innovative teams. No significant differences in levels of task orientation and functional diversity existed. Furthermore, the identified COI elements, particularly the team climate measures, are moderately correlated, suggesting that some elements of the COI are not empirically distinct. I found dynamic expertise to be of particular importance to COIs, and demonstrated that a supportive environment and group flow are particularly important to its development. Finally, results from a multinomial logistic regression model showed that support for innovation, group flow, and dynamic expertise were positively associated with the likelihood of being in a high-ranking innovative team. Implications for the COI framework are discussed.
