▼ Early sixteenth century saw the emergence of
printed sources of polyphony alongside music manuscripts, and the
new technologies applied to the creation of music books inevitably
brought change to their material properties and dissemination. This
thesis examines the effects of
printing technology to the layout of
music, text, and images in books of polyphony from the first half
of the sixteenth century. The research is a part of an AHRC-funded
project 'Production and Reading of Music Sources, 1480–1530' on
systematic analysis on the production and use of polyphonic music
manuscripts and prints from the late fifteenth century to the early
sixteenth century. First part of the thesis (Chapter 2)
re-evaluates the music
printing techniques used during the early
sixteenth century, followed by a bibliographical analysis of the
most common formats and layouts of the surviving sources: large
choirbooks, small choirbooks, and partbooks (Chapters 3, 4, 5). The
analysis on these chapters focuses on the structure of the books
and the
printing materials used in their making, traces
printing
house procedures evident from the layout in order to determine
visual hierarchies on the presentation of music, text, and
decorative devices, and how these hierarchies would change
depending on the geographic location and the technological
requirements. Chapter 6 analyses later changes made to printed
books, both in the
printing house and by the later readers of the
books, with a case study based on Andrea Antico's Liber quindecim
missarum printed in 1516.A closer observation of the
printing
techniques suggests further sub-categories on the main division
between sources printed from woodcuts or from movable type. In
particular, the methods used for
printing from woodcut can be
divided into three categories: block-book
printing, the use of
movable type along the woodcuts, and separating the notation and
staves to two separate blocks for multiple impressions. These
subdivisions allow further understanding of the
printing house
processes, and the individual approaches taken by the makers of
these books. The relatively small readership of polyphonic sources
was receptive for variety in terms of format and layout. While a
portion of printed books share same repertory, they are rarely
identical: the differences in choice of technique and its
implementation on the layout and format bring an individual touch
to the publications, reflecting the diversity present in the
surviving sources of manuscripts and prints from the first decades
of the sixteenth century.

▼ Early sixteenth century saw the emergence of printed sources of polyphony alongside music manuscripts, and the new technologies applied to the creation of music books inevitably brought change to their material properties and dissemination. This thesis examines the effects of printing technology to the layout of music, text, and images in books of polyphony from the first half of the sixteenth century. The research is a part of an AHRC-funded project 'Production and Reading of Music Sources, 1480-1530' on systematic analysis on the production and use of polyphonic music manuscripts and prints from the late fifteenth century to the early sixteenth century. ▼ The adoption of the typographic printing press in Arabic script by Muslims took place in Istanbul in 1725. While the Christian and Jewish communities in Istanbul were utilizing the typographic press to print religious texts for 200 years,
the Ottoman Muslim community was not allowed to print religious texts in Arabic script until after 1800. Measuring the timing of early Muslim printing against the Protestant Reformation, Islam has been characterized as “a barrier to printing” by some
scholars. Narratives of conservative “Islam” which stands against “progress” are often invoked. My research shows these previous characterizations to be erroneous oversimplifications. In fact, there were many concurrent forces that shaped the story of
early Muslim printing: European colonial expeditions into Muslim countries, Islamic values and book aesthetics, and the invention of lithographic printing techniques in 1795. I argue that early Muslim printing was a uniquely Islamic “information
revolution,” one of many in the broader continuum of Islamic history.

▼ Athens Press Workers Union (EETA) was founded in 1933 by 173 male workers, employed in newspapers, journals and books. Although we can locate a number of skilled workers in a printing-office, EETA recognizes only four of them: the compositors, the linotypists, the machinists of linotypes machines and the pressmen of cylinder presses. Labour agreements will give Athens press workers the opportunity to “legitimize” the five-hour work day, cost of living wage adjustment, wage payments on Sundays, though not a working day, and the exclusivity of the Union in supplying the appropriate working staff at printing offices. These conditions, in combination with the control over the production process, ensured the high level of wages received by press workers. Printing labour was regarded as male work and the exclusion of women from Athenian press was obvious. The absence of threat by female workers involved in men’s work had, to some extent, limited ideological statements against the entry of women into the trade. Unlike other skilled workers, press workers in Athens managed to maintain their ‘aristocratic’ status until mid-1980s. As labour aristocrats, press workers saw themselves as “natural leaders of the Greek working class” but they were miles away. This thesis studies printing unions with emphasis on EETA, the association of the union with journalists, employers, Athens Printers Union and printing unions in other cities, the close relationship of employers (EIHEA) with the government, the role of newspapers in configuration of financial and political surroundings in the post-civil war Greece.
Η Ένωση Εργατών Τύπου Αθηνών (ΕΕΤΑ) ιδρύεται το 1933 από 173 άνδρες εργάτες απασχολούμενοι σε εφημερίδες, περιοδικά και βιβλία. Παρόλο που μπορούμε να εντοπίσουμε ποικίλες ειδικότητες σε ένα τυπογραφείο, η ΕΕΤΑ αναγνωρίζει μόνο τέσσερις: τους στοιχειοθέτες, τους λινοτύπες, τους μηχανικούς λινοτυπικών μηχανών και τους πιεστές κυλινδρικών πιεστηρίων. ▼ The undertaking of this investigation was to question the aesthetic significance of overprint varnish. To do this a statistical investigation was developed to answer the question: "When the protection factor of overprint varnishing is of little or no significance, does overprint varnishing of the finished product add an element of aesthetic quality sufficient to justify the outlay of additional funds?" The philosophy of the investigation revolved around the investigative sample distinguishing the overprint varnishing process as a significant aesthestic enhancement process.
To do this a sample of 15 sets of magazine quality reproductions, all printed under the same conditions, were secured from a local magazine printer. One-half of the above samples were coated with overprint varnish. Finally the 15 sets, each containing the same reproduction varnished and unvarnished, were submitted for aesthetic evaluation to an investigative sample of
printing experts and a group of randomly selected people "off the street."
The findings of this investigation using a non-parametric sign test as the evaluation tool, indicate the group of
printing experts differentiate the overprint varnished reproductions as significantly discernible.
On the other hand the sample group of people "off the street" did not significantly identify a difference between the varnished and non-varnished reproductions. This being the case, the application of overprint varnish for aesthetic purposes is concluded as being quite questionable. To the printer and especially the buyer of
printing, such questionable 'conclusions should drastically influence his use of overprint varnish.

▼ Toner-based digital presses are now capable of matching offset lithographic presses in image and print quality. Current trends show increased interest in
printing fine art books on digital presses. It is necessary to understand the extent to which digital
printing systems are capable of accurately rendering fine-art reproductions. This research analyzed paper properties that maximize image quality and preference for digitally printed fine art reproductions. Four images, representing four art media, were printed on twelve papers using two digital presses. The twelve papers represented different combinations of color, print-show-through, roughness and gloss. A psychophysical experiment was conducted in which observers ranked the twelve papers for each image on the basis of image quality, color rendering quality, and surface appearance quality. The results were analyzed and a model was developed to predict the probability that a paper was ranked in the top three. Paper color (coolness), basis weight, roughness, and gloss were model parameters. Unlike gloss, roughness, and print-show-through, there was no previous metric for quantifying coolness. Therefore, an additional experiment was conducted to develop a model to predict the perception of coolness using colorimetry. An alternative experiment model was also developed that included parameters such as caliper, print gloss, line raggedness, and dot circularity. The resulting models allowed for the optimization of paper parameters that maximize the probability a paper will produce preferred and high quality images. It was concluded that the probability a book was judged as having high image quality was optimized for papers with high coolness, low roughness and low gloss. Neither print show-through, line raggedness, nor mottle were significant factors. An additional lexical analysis was performed for observer descriptions of their ranking behavior. This analysis provided complementary data to the psychophysical results. Observers' descriptions of their ranking strategies did not match the rank data, suggesting a possible disconnect between observers' conscious and subconscious ranking behaviors.

▼ Press calibration is an approach to adjust the behavior of ink, paper, and
press with the use of a CTP platemaking system to achieve a specified reference
printing condition.
Reference
printing condition defines a common color space for color image data exchange between various output devices. The advantage of a reference
printing condition is to improve color image quality and reduce cost and time. Corner points of the color gamut, TVI curves, and grey reproduction are the three significant elements in a reference
printing condition, which make them essential in
press calibration.
There are usually two
press runs in
press calibration. The first
press run (Run 1) is to adjust ink system of a
press to achieve the color gamut conformance to the reference aims with linear plates. The second
press run (Run 2) is to either adjust tonality or neutrality of the
press with curved plates based on the Run 1
printing condition.
Thus, the question is "whether the two
press calibration runs can meet the three requirements achieving full conformance according to the reference aims?"
This research assessed two cases starting with two real Run 1
printing conditions. In the both cases, ISO Type 1 paper was used and the color gamut was in conformance to the reference CGATS TR006
printing condition.
Run 2 was a simulated calibration
press run with the adjustment of either tonality or neutrality of the
press. The use of A-to-B tag and B-to-A tag of the Run 1 ICC profile with absolute colorimetric rendering intent was the essential idea to simulate a calibrated Run 2
printing condition. The advantage is that no
printing drafts would occur in the simulation approach, which guarantees repeatability from Run 1 to Run 2.
The calibration results were verified to be in conformance first before other assessments. In other words, TVI curves of the TVI-based calibrated results were verified to be in conformance first before grey reproduction conformance was assessed; and grey reproduction of G7-based calibration results was verified to be in conformance first before TVI curves' conformance was assessed.
The research results show that (1) if deviations of TVI curves and grey reproduction in Run 1
printing conditions are close to the reference aims, either of the two calibration methods can achieve full conformance; and (2) if discrepancies of TVI curves and grey reproduction conformance in Run 1
printing conditions are far from the reference aims, a third requirement may not be in conformance unless adjustments will be iterated within specified tolerances.

▼ Industrial control systems are being implemented throughout the workplace performing simple functions such as maintaining the temperature of a grill at a fast food restaurant to complex functions such as automating large
printing presses. They can be as simple as a single controller with one input and one output to a network of hundreds of controllers spread across a city with thousands of digital and analog inputs and outputs. In the field of
printing, the demand for high quality prints is rapidly increasing driving a demand for coated substrates that require highly automated offline coaters to produce. This presents an opportunity to develop an advanced industrial control system that requires a multidisciplinary team to succeed. For this report, the design methodology of an industrial control system as it applies to an automated offline coater will be presented. Relevant national and international standards will be discussed and referenced with respect to how they apply to the design process. The engineering behind component selection for various control points such as motor speed and position control, power supplies, power control and regulation, circuit protection, sensors, and safety systems will be presented. These systems will be brought together to produce a fully automated offline coater.

▼ Cette thèse est héritière de l’histoire de la presse qui s’est d’abord intéressée aux journaux puis aux journalistes. Cette étude, des journaux et en parallèle des journalistes, vise à combler un vide sur le journalisme de la presse périodique. Elle s’intéresse à la période 1870-1914, et analyse de façon critique ce qui est considéré comme l’âge d’or de la presse. Ce travail s’appuie sur des archives inédites, notamment les rapports de police qui ont été rédigés régulièrement sur les journaux et journalistes de Lyon à cette époque. En effet, si les contraintes politiques sur la presse diminuent, notamment avec la loi sur la liberté de la presse de 1881, la surveillance continue à Lyon. La liberté de la presse, avec les progrès techniques, l’alphabétisation, l’urbanisation, la publicité expliquent la hausse du nombre de journaux, de leur tirage et du nombre de personnes qui se rattachent à ces journaux. 1 725 titres parus durant cette période ainsi que 1130 individus ont été recensés. Ces journaux sont des plus divers par leur périodicité, leur tirage et leur sujet, des quotidiens, aux journaux militants, religieux, de loisirs, professionnels. Mais ils répondent tous à un nouveau besoin d’informer et d’être informé, de médiatisation. Ils ont aussi en commun d’être lancés par des jeunes hommes issus de la classe moyenne. Cette expérience permet à certains de devenir journalistes de quotidien et de connaître une ascension sociale à travers les duels, les décorations et l’appartenance à une association de journalistes. Pour la quasi-totalité d’entre eux cela reste cependant une expérience éphémère qui dure quelques semaines.
This doctoral thesis is in line with the history of the press which originally focused on newspapers and later on journalists. The research aims at filling a gap of information on the journalism of periodicals by studying newspapers and journalists simultaneously. It focuses on the years 1870-1914 and provides a critical analysis on the era which is often considered as the Golden Age of the press. The author’s work relies on archives that had not been exploited before, in particular on police reports dealing with journalists and newspapers, which were then made on a regular basis. Indeed, although political pressure on the press diminished after the 1881 freedom of the press act was passed, police surveillance remained active in Lyon. Freedom of the press, as well as technical progress, a higher literacy rate, urbanization and the rise of advertising account for an increase in the number of newspapers, their circulation and contributors. 1725 newspapers and 1130 journalists have been listed. Those newspapers varied in periodicity, circulation and topics, ranging from the daily to the activist, the religious or professional. However, they all fulfilled a new need to inform and be informed, of media coverage and they were all launched by young men from the middle class. ▼ Este trabalho problematiza a luta por hegemonia por meio da análise do jornal Correio de Uberlândia na década de 1960. Tem como objetivo compreender como a imprensa se constitui enquanto prática social na cidade de Uberlândia refletindo sobre a memória, relevando a singularidade das relações e interesses que influenciavam o posicionamento do periódico com relação ao Regime Militar e o que isso significava na luta por hegemonia. Discute a construção deste veículo enquanto fonte de pesquisa, visto que a imprensa organiza, articula e constrói interesses, analisando o jornal enquanto parte da cidade para entender como este intervém na sociedade. Questiona-se quem são os sujeitos que constroem essa intervenção, uma vez que os projetos das diversas forças sociais são articulados pela imprensa segundo os interesses de seus proprietários, financiadores e grupos os quais representa, influenciando diretamente a produção da memória.
This work puts in doubt the fight for hegemony by using the analysys of the Correio de Uberlândia newspaper in the 1960s. Its objective is to comprehend how the local printing press is consisted of while social practice in Uberlândia pondering over the memory, revealing the singularity of the relations and interests that influenced the way the paper used to be place according to the Militar Regime, and what it meant in the fight for hegemony. It discusses the construction of this mean of communication while being a source of research, once the printing press organizes, articulates and builds interests, analyzing the newspaper as a part of the city to understand how it intervenes in the society. It is also questioned who are the individuals who composes this intervention, once the projects of the several social powers are articulated by the press, according the interests of its owners, maintainers and groups that it represents, affecting directly the memory production.

▼ According to the doctrine of purgatory, souls departing life in God's grace who haven't yet received remission of their sins, will suffer a temporary punishment in purgatory in order to be purged of sins and ready for heaven. Le Goff (1984), a scholar of medieval history, states that the doctrine of purgatory was introduced in Christianity by the Catholic Church in the 12th century. The importance of the doctrine of purgatory is the fact that it connects this world with the next, and those alive can pray and change the faith of souls in purgatory. Thus, purgatory is an interesting topic to study because the religious firm, the Church, can alter the well-being of individuals in both this world and the next. This research studies the history of endogenous changes in afterlife salvation and the doctrine of purgatory, along with the economic incentives leading to these changes.

▼ This dissertation aims to establish the importance of Charles II in the shaping and evolution of Restoration theatre. Even more so than the playwrights themselves, Charles II determined the future of the theatre, both by his conscious efforts to do so, as well as unintentionally through his own behavior and image. The tradition of Restoration theatre began in 1660 with Charles’s efforts at establishing a consensus theatre, in which it would appear that he enjoyed unanimous support for his return to England from exile. Consensus theatre was determined by the perception of Charles’s rule and character, his power to manipulate the new theatre companies and which playwrights wrote and what they wrote, and his person, or popular image. This attempt at consensus began to fail within a few years of Charles’s coming, although his image continued to dominate the theatre, even if only through sometimes negative reactions to his personal image. This influence on theatre continued until his death in 1685.

press in order to save make-ready time. A preliminary experiment is run to establish and identify the correlation between the information obtained from visually scanning the plates and the ink key dial settings. The test involves a control group and a test group making
press runs to see if pre-setting the ink keys can save time. The results show that such an idea is possible. The preliminary experiment establishes a positive correlation between the two variables and test group
press-run times are significantly less than control group's times. The study indicates that further research involving ink key settings and ink distribution would be useful.

printing of the late nineteenth century was crude and commercial in the worst sense. The ideals and vitality that William Morris, Emery Walker, C. H. St. John Hornby, Charles Ricketts, T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and others injected into English
printing during the last decades of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth were known to relatively few Americans. One of those few Americans was Frederic W. Goudy, March 8, 1865 – May 11, 1947. Paul Johnston in an article for the Fleuron (No. VII, 1930, p. 191A) wrote, "It was the part of Frederic W. Goudy to help the general printer in America to understand and to learn from the movement which began with Morris. And it is to Mr Goudy that American
printing owes much of the strength and charm which may be claimed for the common, as well as the fine, work to-day." Goudy's activities in
printing-related fields included type design and manufacture, writing and speaking to the public about the principles of letter forms, type design and typography, and operation with his family of a private
press for thirty-odd years. Through these activities Goudy's influence on
printing was amazingly great, yet no analytical and thorough studies of him exist. Rochester Institute of Technology received in 1975 several boxes of Goudy's private correspondence. Most of the approximately 1600 letters were addressed to Goudy during the years 1936-1946. The correspondents were printers, educators, type foundry personnel, book collectors, equipment manufacturers, family and friends, and their letters deal with business as well as personal activities. This thesis has involved editing the letters into a calendar. The contents of each letter has been abstracted, with important information being quoted. Background material has been added to clarify an entry or to refer to related correspondence. Indexes of personal and company names and Goudy type faces have been prepared as reference aids to the calendar. The entries have been arranged chronologically to follow Goudy s daily life in the ten year period. It was expected that a calendar form of the correspondence would allow the material therein to be fully utilized. Further, it was hoped that the information in the letters would contribute measurably to a serious study of Frederic Goudy. It will be for future Goudy researchers to test those expectations, but confirmation seems probable.

elektros pavara valdomo lapų perdavimo mechanizmo dinaminis modelis
su 16 laisvės laipsnių. Sistemos matematinis modelis (virpesių
lygtys ir struktūrinė schema) sudarytas kompiuterizuotu būdu
MATLAB/SIMULINK programų terpėje, kurioje atliktas sistemoje
vykstančių dinaminių procesų modeliavimas. Pavaroje kylančios
paklaidos apibūdinamos sukamųjų virpesių amplitudinėmis –
dažninėmis charakteristikomis. Nagrinėjama šių charakteristikų
pobūdžio, rezonansinių virpesių ir jų dažnių įtaka lapo perdavimo
paklaidos dydžiui.
It is important in printing machines to
maintain very high print quality (hundredths of a millimeter) in
printing colorful prints. Also mismatches of prints in both sides
of sheet must not exceed 0,1 millimeter. One of the reasons of
mismatching is mechanical gear transfers mechanisms, from one
printing unit to another, rotational oscillations, which are
generated by gear errors and resistance moment changes between
offset and print cylinder. These oscillations influence to sheet
transfer accuracy are examined in analytical – computer way. For
particular examination there was selected “Heidelberg” printing
press GTO 52, but the examination method can be used for other
presses. There was formed dynamic model with 16 degrees of freedom.
Mathematical model of the system (oscillation equations and
flowchart) was formed with MATLAB/SIMULINK program, in which
dynamical process modeling was done. Errors in drive described as
an amplitude frequency response. There was examined these response
nature, resonant oscillations and its frequency influence to sheets
transfer errors size.

▼ My dissertation, Pen and Printing-Block: William Morris and the Resurrection of Medieval Paratextuality, considers William Morris’s influence on the rise of paratextual awareness, his negotiation strategies for Victorian England’s social identity, and his rhetorical construction of an idealized past through textual artifacts. The effect of Morris’s growing social awareness on his transition from illumination to print is reframed by considering his calligraphy as paratextual experiments, based on medieval examples, in combining graphic and discursive meanings with rhetorical and social dimensions. The varied and less ambitious agendas of those printers who followed Morris’s Kelmscott Press, however, limited Morris’s legacy in the book arts. The full significance of his illuminations’ meaningful interplay between text and image, and the social intent of these innovations applications in print, has received little critical attention.
The opening chapter frames Morris’s visual work in light of his philosophies and introduces the major concerns of material art, the role of history, the limits of language, and the question of meaningful labour. The second chapter surveys select predecessors of Morris’s developing conception of the Gothic, the significance of architecture as its defining form, and the irreplaceability of the physical past. The third chapter considers the role of the illuminated manuscript in Pre-Raphaelite art, tracing Morris’s calligraphic experiments chronologically while identifying medieval inspirations and examining his artistic development. These experiments led to his final collaborative manuscript, the illuminated Æneid which is the fourth chapter’s focus. The sophistication of its paratextual elements is discussed in light of its unique physicality and limitations. The fifth chapter asserts the Kelmscott Press’s role in balancing craftsmanship and aesthetic paratextual strategies with reproducible models. The Kelmscott Chaucer is the culmination of these strategies, and it is compared to the visual rhetoric of its predecessors. The final chapter compares the philosophies and calligraphic elements of major private presses that followed Kelmscott’s legacy. This evolution of aesthetic, social, and practical considerations is also identified in the work of selected Canadian printers, and a final note considers the implications of the rise of immaterial digital text (radiant textuality) for the continuation of material paratextuality’s role in the future.

▼ Prevailing Catholic thought in the sixteenth century perceived heresy as a cancer on society and the printed word an effective carrier. Acceptance of this view throughout the Spanish kingdom resulted in the vigilant scrutiny of printed works, in particular those imported or produced in the Americas. Who reviewed manuscript works destined for or written in Mexico before the
printing block hit the paper? Did the New Spanish bureaucracy repress colonial authors intellectually or financially? This thesis examines preventive censorship, or the inspection and licensing of manuscripts considered for publishing, and
printing privilege in sixteenth-century Mexico. Mexican books printed 1540-1612 and official correspondence form the basis of this thesis. The overarching analysis is diachronic-bibliographic in nature. It starts with the origins of preventing censorship in Spain, its transference to New Spain, and its administration during the first decade of the American
printing press (1487-1550). Thrusting ahead, it then delves into the bureaucratic, political, and economic nuances of the mature publishing practice at the turn of the century (1590-1612). The conclusion compares the bookend phases, defines factors, and looks at prevailing practices in Europe to contextualize Mexico’s unique publishing industry. In the Americas, religious authors established, financed, and developed the publishing economy to facilitate indigenous indoctrination and enculturation, enforce Christian hegemony, and promote higher education. As these authors came to dominate in the writing, censorship, and production of Mexican printed books throughout the sixteenth century, printers increasingly assumed a subordinate role. In the European
printing industry, non-cleric officials predominantly censored manuscripts and printers assumed primary ownership of intellectual work. Inversing European practice, published authors in Mexico enjoyed significant influence over the censorship,
printing, and economic potential of their intellectual fruits from the onset of colonization to the remainder of the sixteenth century and beyond.

▼ Cette étude interroge la place de l’écrit et des actes d’écriture lors de la première mission jésuite en Angleterre, de 1580 à 1610. Lettres, autobiographies et pamphlets s’inscrivent dans un programme mis en place par les supérieurs de l’ordre, visant à l’édification des catholiques anglais et au dénigrement du gouvernement d’Élisabeth auprès des peuples européens. À la fois outils de propagande et seuls moyens d’information possibles entre l’île et le continent, les écrits missionnaires permettent à leurs auteurs de donner corps à la communauté récusante clandestine, ainsi qu’à la mission elle-même. La circulation de ces textes, tant en Angleterre que sur le continent, trace ainsi les contours d’une communauté dont l’existence est étroitement liée à la production de l’écrit. Mais, si elle détournée, la trace peut devenir arrêt de mort, révélant l’identité de celui qui l’a produite aux yeux de l’intrus qui la déchiffre. Pourtant, les jésuites ne cessent d’écrire malgré le danger que cela représente. L’acte d’écriture semble alors dépasser la seule visée programmatique pour revêtir une dimension ontologique, permettant à l’auteur de dépasser le traumatisme de l’expérience immédiate et de renouer avec sa propre identité, mise en mal par l’exil, la prison ou la perspective de l’exécution.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the role of writing during the first English Jesuit mission, from 1580 to 1610. It shows that letters, pamphlets and autobiographies were part of a larger programme devised by the Superiors of the Company of Jesus. As both a means of propaganda and information between England and the continent, missionary writings helped to shape the Jesuit mission and the underground recusant community within which the Jesuits lived. The aim was to edify the English Catholics and to weaken Elizabeth’s government in the eyes of European Catholics. By circulating texts throughout the country and in the rest of Europe, the Jesuits shaped a community highly reliant on written material. But writing was also incredibly dangerous as it marked the author and those responsible for its circulation as irredeemably catholic. Yet, the Jesuits kept on writing regardless of the consequences. Indeed, writing was vital to those missionaries whose identity was daily denied and who had to face the gloomy prospect of death from their arrival onwards. The very act of writing allowed them to fight against the feeling of dispossession which was gradually taking hold of them.

▼ This paper studies the movement of material which accumulates on the image
printing blanket of a web offset
press printing newsprint. A theory is advanced to explain this movement. It is based on the differences in velocities of the paper and blanket surfaces entering and exiting the
printing nip. The designed experiment run uses three factors to test the changes in direction and rate of movement. These are: (1) the compressibility of blanket sets, (2) the relative image
printing and impression blanket diameters, and (3) the
printing squeeze. No other factors involved in the nip area are tested. The movement of material on the blanket surface is recorded using stroboscopic photography on 35mm transparency film. The photographs record the positions of material on the blanket every 150 impressions. Analysis of the recorded movement is made by projection of the successive images. Results of statistical tests indicate that the relative diameters of the image
printing and impression cylinders can influence the direction of movement. Movement is forward when the image
printing blanket is less than the impression blanket and backwards when the image
printing blanket is greater than the impression blanket. When
printing with unequal diameters, the compressible blanket set produces less movement than the non-compressible set. These results support the theory advanced.

▼ Printing shrink labels with waterbased flexographic inks require a great deal of
attention from the
press operator. Lack of heat from the dryers can cause drying related
problems, while an increase in the dryer temperature can shrink the material. Some
press
manufacturers recommend presses that are equipped with powerful dryers and expensive
chill roll systems. Manufacturers also suggest the use of a corona treatment unit to
improve ink adhesion. Newcomers, that do not wish to invest in new presses and
equipment of this kind, struggle with finding a proper combination of
press speed and
dryer settings that may offer acceptable print results.
The main objective of this research project was to establish an optimal
press
speed for a conventional flexographic
printing technique that could output acceptable
printing products for heat sensitive materials. To accomplish the research objective, a
series of shrink film samples were evaluated from two main flexographic print runs. One
run was performed using a corona treatment unit and another one without corona
treatment. These print runs were executed using waterbased inks on a shrinkable film.
Each run was divided into six
press speed segments. For each segment, the
press was set
at a different speed. Following the print operation, a series of tests were conducted to
determine the
press speed boundaries that were best suited for
printing without affecting
the performance of the shrink film or inks. Samples were evaluated by employing an
adhesion test, re-wetting test, shrinkage test, a blocking test and an offsetting test.
Tests performed during the course of this research project established that shrink
labels could be printed on a conventional waterbased flexographic
press as long as the
press uses corona treatment and that the maximum
press speed does not exceed 150 feet
per minute.
Printing shrink films without corona treatment should not be performed since
ink adhesion fails at all
press speeds and blocking and offsetting issues are visible when
press speed reaches 150 feet per minute.

▼ Poly (ethylene oxide) is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is one of the classes of synthetic water soluble resins which are commercially available. The properties of poly (ethylene oxide) as a desensitizer in the fountain solution were studied. The solution of this resin was compared to gum arabic solution. The investigation included the study of the physical properties of the solutions at different concentrations as well as
press performance. Comparisons were made as to wettability, viscosity, surface tension, the ability to clean the plate, the resistance to scum,
printing sharpness, resolution, and the plate-
press characteristic curve. The experiments were made under controlled conditions; the only variable being one ingredient of the fountain solution. The properties of each solution were discussed and reported. The concentration of poly (ethylene oxide) necessary was determined. Most of the results were statistically analyzed by the two factors analysis of variance. The properties of poly (ethylene oxide) as a substitute for gum arabic in the fountain solution varied. Poly (ethylene oxide) is comparable in regard to the ability to clean the plate, resistance to scum, and
printing sharpness. The gum arabic solution gives better resolution. The plate-
press characteristic curves appear to be alike and almost superimpose on each other. The advantage of poly (ethylene oxide) is its high resistance to bacterial attack.

Abordamos este tema com um referencial apoiado na história cultural. This thesis studies the views and discussions about Germanism (Deutschtum), school and teacher conveyed in the journal Allgemeine Lehrerzeitung für Rio Grande do Sul, Vereinsblatt des Deutschen Evangelischen Lehrervereins in Rio Grande do Sul [General Teachers Journal for Rio Grande do Sul, a publication of the Association of German Evangelical Teachers in Rio Grande do Sul], edited and published by the Deutscher Evangelischer Lehrerverein von Rio Grande do Sul [Association of German Evangelical Teachers from Rio Grande do Sul] between the years 1902 and 1938. We approached this topic with a frame of reference based on cultural history. The journals editors and contributors, most of whom were German teachers allocated to urban schools, address topics such as Deutschtum, school and teacher, deal with issues like identity, set models of conduct and recommend reading material for teachers working in German-Brazilian evangelical schools, the jounals primary readership. We also present the views exposed on topics such as school, nationalization and national-socialism, along with the negotiation strategies championed in the ALZ with the aim of sustaining the project of the German and Evangelical private schools, based on the fostering of Deutschtum and the education for Brazilian citizenship. We also review the relationship between the Association of Teachers and the Lutheran Riograndense Synod, representing the church, at the time, one of the main supporting pillars of Deutschtum in Brazil

▼ Longtemps délaissée comme source primaire des études historiques en Espagne, la presse est devenue, depuis les travaux pionniers d'Alberto Gil Novales, une source incontournable pour nombre de chercheurs. A côté des rubriques consacrées aux seules informations et des articles de fond, qui intéressent essentiellement l'histoire événementielle et celle des mentalités, les diverses annonces qu'accueillent généralement les périodiques permettent des études socio-économiques particulièrement utiles en ce qui concerne le XVIII° siècle. María José Seoane a déjà exploité ce genre de sources pour la période 1808-1819 à partir de la Gaceta de Madrid et du Diario de Madrid. Pour notre part, nous attachant à la période qui couvre le règne de Charles IV (1788-1808) et utilisant les annonces de librairie publiées dans l'ensemble des périodiques madrilènes de cette période, nous entendons ne pas nous contenter dans notre thèse de produire les listes des ouvrages annoncés mais, à partir de celles-ci, faire le bilan de la production imprimée pendant la seconde moitié du XVIII° siècle, étudier les réseaux de diffusion de ces ouvrages ainsi que les stratégies mises en place par les auteurs et les éditeurs avant de constater les succès et échecs de leurs entreprises. Nous pensons apporter ainsi une contribution utile à l'étude du livre et de la lecture et permettre ainsi de mieux appréhender ce qui fut le premier vecteur de diffusion des Lumières en Espagne.
Long neglected as a primary source of historical studies in Spain, the Press has become a valuable source for a lot of researchers since the pioneering work of A.G.N. Alongside sections solely devoted to information and feature stories, which are of particular interest to the history of events and mentalities, the numerous notices which make up the contents of periodicals allow for particularly useful socio-economic studies as regards the eighteenth century.Maria José Seoane already relied on this kind of sources from La Gaceta de Madrid and Diario de Madrid for the period spanning between 1808 and 1819. As far as we are concerned, focusing on the period covering Charles IV's reign (1788-1808) and using bookshop publications from all of Madrid 's periodicals of the time, we intend not to confine our thesis to the simple enumeration of the reading lists but, on the contrary, to evaluate the print production of the second half of the eighteenth century, at the light of those reading lists. We also intend to study the diffusion networks as well as the strategies that were developed by writers and editors alike before the successes or failures of their undertaking. We thus hope to make a valuable contribution to the study of books and book reading and therefore allow for a better understanding of what was the first vehicle for the dissemination of the ideas of The Enlightenment in Spain.

▼ Web breaks are considered as one of the most significant runnability problems in a pressroom. This work concerns the analysis of relation between various parameters (variables) characterizing the paper, printing press, the printing process and the web break occurrence. A large number of variables, 61 in total, obtained off-line as well as measured online during the printing process are used in the investigation. Each paper reel is characterized by a vector x of 61 components. Two main approaches are explored. The first one treats the problem as a data classification task into "break" and "non break" classes. The procedures of classifier training, the selection of relevant input variables and the selection of hyper-parameters of the classifier are aggregated into one process based on genetic search. The second approach combines procedures of genetic search based variable selection and data mapping into a low dimensional space. The genetic search process results into a variable set providing the best mapping according to some quality function. The empirical study was performed using data collected at a pressroom in Sweden. The total number of data points available for the experiments was equal to 309. Amongst those, only 37 data points represent the web break cases. The results of the investigations have shown that the linear relations between the independent variables and the web break frequency are not strong. Three important groups of variables were identified, namely Lab data (variables characterizing paper properties and measured off-line in a paper mill lab), Ink registry (variables characterizing operator actions aimed to adjust ink registry) and Web tension. We found that the most important variables are: Ink registry Y LS MD (adjustments of yellow ink registry in machine direction on the lower paper side), Air permeability (character- izes paper porosity), Paper grammage, Elongation MD, and four variables characterizing web tension: Moment mean, Min sliding Mean, Web tension variance, and Web tension mean. The proposed methods were helpful in finding the variables influencing the occurrence of web breaks and can also be used for solving other industrial problems.

▼ D’où vient « le mur dans les têtes » des Allemands en 1989 ? Que signifient les stéréotypes Besserwessi / Jammerossi ? Quelles sont les représentations et les identités en R.D.A. et en R.F.A. ? Existe-t-il deux identités allemandes différentes ? Avec un corpus de 312 exemplaires de Der Spiegel et de la Neue Berliner Illustrierte, cette thèse étudie la dimension sémantique des stéréotypes, elle analyse les représentations en R.F.A. et en R.D.A. et définit une double identité allemande. L’année 1989 provoque une crise identitaire et langagière que nous étudions à l’aide de sondages, d’ouvrages, de caricatures et de journaux. La guerre froide, la manipulation du discours et un contexte économique déstabilisant font naître dès 1949 des stéréotypes qui s’intensifient en 1961 et s’accumulent en 1989. Ils se transforment du stéréotype de la revendication de représenter l’Allemagne dans son ensemble (1949) en celui de la grande famille socialiste (R.D.A.) et de la grande famille américaine (R.F.A.) en 1961 et en celui de la pérennité étatique (R.D.A.) et de la terra incognita (R.F.A.) en 1989. Les stéréotypes se diffusent avec des images et un vocabulaire de la consommation et de l’individualisme en R.F.A. et de la solidarité en R.D.A. L’identité est-allemande est une identité collective, solidaire et uniforme et l’identité ouest-allemande est une identité de plaisir, de liberté, d’esprit de compétitivité et d’individualisme. Avec une perspective de recherche pluridisciplinaire, comparative et transnationale, ce travail s’insère dans les champs des recherches historiques et linguistiques et s’appuie sur l’histoire comparée, l’analyse du discours et de l’image. L’enjeu identitaire est relié aux stéréotypes et aux représentations qui sont les faces visibles des stéréotypes. Cette thèse étudie aussi les lieux de mémoire textuels, culinaires, culturels, politiques et économiques est-allemands et ouest-allemands en se basant sur les travaux de Walter Lippmann, Ruth Amossy, Pierre Nora, Etienne François, Hagen Schulze, Pierre Moscovici, Christian Delporte, Dominique Maingueneau, Laurent Gervereau, Heinz Gerhard Haupt, Henri Ménudier, Sandrine Kott, Alain Lattard. C’est ce qui nous permet d’analyser les discours d’hommes politiques et de journalistes comme Helmut Kohl, Ludwig Erhard, Konrad Adenauer, Walter Ulbricht, Rudolf Augstein, Rudolf Hernnstadt et Lilly Becher.

▼ A group of RIT Mechanical Engineering students spent the 2014-2015 academic year in their senior design class collaborating with the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection to design and fabricate a 21st century hand-operated platen
press.
The
press that was designed during this engineering exercise met several requirements:
be under 30 lbs
fit in a 24 inch square table top space
be manufactured with a majority of components which could be purchased from a standard parts supplier
be able to print with commonly manufactured ink rollers, ink, letterpress chases, spacing and furniture
the platen and packing had to be adjustable to accommodate many thicknesses of substrates
the
press had to accommodate vintage metal and wood type, as well as modern relief and polymer plates
the quailty of the prints had to match excellent
printing that could be obtained with vintage platen presses
The Cary Collection offers the the students' parts list, drawings, and assembly instructions under a Creative Commons license. The parts and limited machining time is estimated to be about $600.
The Cary Collection assumes no liability in the resulting presses made using these documents; we are merely sharing scholarly work of a student group to the greater printing community.

printing involves the transfer of ink from the image areas of the
printing plate to the paper through an intermediate blanket. The blanket is usually composed of synthetic fiber materials (e.g. nylon). Blanket-paper-ink characteristics contribute to limits of
printing quality and mechanical
press operation. Paper and blanket physical surface characteristics and also ink tackiness contribute to adhesion between the paper and blanket. If the adhesion is sufficiently large, the force required to separate the paper from the blanket may cause deterioration of print quality or
press operational problems. Deterioration of the printed quality may include picking of coating from the paper surface (leaving holes in the image) or misregistration of succeeding color overlays due to distortion of the paper. Measurements of blanket release characteristics have been done in the laboratory (Hull) and on sheet-fed presses (Beecroft and Farrell). In both cases, evaluation was done by measuring paper parameters after completion of the
printing operation by an indirect method. This study has led to development of methods for direct measurement of blanket wrap during operation of a high speed web
press. A visual technique allows numerical rating of blanket release for objective comparison of blankets or
printing parameters. High speed cinematographic techniques allow analysis of the transient characteristics of blanket release. Samples of data gathered by both techniques are given. Recommendations for further work and standardized blanket test procedures are presented.

▼ 'Copyright Privileges, Intellectual Property, and Image Ownership: The Role of Law in the Art of Renaissance Venice' examines the origins of copyright and intellectual property law in relation to the production of artwork and cartography in Early Modern Venice. The modern conception of art copyright, intellectual property and image ownership began as result of a convergence of several factors. Innovations in the Venetian printing press and advances in papermaking technologies enabled rapid production of less expensive and higher quality prints. In quick succession, the print industry became increasingly concerned that the high cost of designing a new print was at considerable risk if competitors decided to replicate the image soon after the product was released. Meanwhile, the Inquisition raged throughout Italy and the Papacy was troubled that printed materials would propagate morally and religiously questionable material. As a result of these independent yet interrelated influences, the Council of Ten and Senate of Venice passed legislation to appease both parties. This judicial reform required all circulated prints to possess a license and provided the opportunity to request optional exclusive reproduction rights known as a 'privilegio'. Initially intended to be applied to printed books, the law used terminology literally translated as ‘works on paper’. Artists, printmakers and publishers soon adapted legal privileges to printed art and cartography. The Venetian government enacted a succession of edicts in an attempt to restrict the ever mounting number of supplications, while the artistic community sought to capitalize on the economically lucrative and innovative moral rights advanced by the existence of the 'privilegio'. Privilege holders granted permission by the Venetian government include: Luca Bertelli, Antonio Floriano, Nicolo Nelli, Enea Vico (Parmigiano) and Titian. The PhD dissertation draws on primary evidence such as original artwork (paintings, sculptures, preparatory drawings and prints), official privilege decrees, correspondence from artists, printmakers and print shop owners, applications for licenses and privileges, letters of inspection by inquisitors from the Riformatori dello Studio di Padova, and secondary decrees from the Council of Ten and Senate of Venice, to conduct a comparative art-legal analysis that places case studies pertaining to picture print and map 'privilegi' within their broader socio-political context.

Tendo sido deflagrada no período entre guerras, quando o capitalismo experimentava os efeitos da crise de 1929; quando o fascismo atravessava seu momento de afirmação na Europa, e quando a Revolução Russa apresentava uma alternativa política para os povos, este acontecimento acabou por se tornar rico em símbolos e significados, atraindo não apenas a atenção, mas também a solidariedade de boa parte do mundo para ambos os lados em contenda. No Brasil, marcado pela repressão ao comunismo, especialmente após 1935, a Guerra Civil Espanhola veio a servir, na visão das elites, como exemplo do que poderia aqui ocorrer caso o comunismo viesse a encontrar solo fértil no continente americano, sendo uma das formas de difundir esta idéia as páginas da grande imprensa escrita. ▼ Halftone gravure has become the accepted front end imaging procedure for the publication gravure industry. Halftone gravure refers to using screened or halftone film when imaging a gravure cylinder. This procedure has allowed the publication gravure industry to benefit from the prepress advantages of offset
printing. Therefore, the possibilities of an allowable color tolerance between a halftone gravure print and a SWOP standard offset
press proof in hue, saturation, and brightness needed to be studied. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an allowable color tolerance could be achieved between the gravure production print and the SWOP standard offset
press proof. The experimental design involved the research of the effects of clear extender varnish modifications of gravure inks used to produce an allowable color tolerance between a gravure print and a SWOP standard offset
press proof. It was important to compare the gravure print to the SWOP standard offset
press proof because the publication gravure industry recognized the SWOP standard offset
press proof as the standard or control parameter. The methodology was based upon the modification of gravure inks by the addition of 10% intervals of clear extender varnish. Five intervals of 10% clear extender varnish were added to each of the gravure inks. After the gravure prints (10% to 50% clear extender varnish added to the inks) were printed, each was compared to an offset
press proof which was printed in accordance with the recommended Specifications for Web Offset Publications (SWOP) . A Minolta Chroma Meter CR-121 was used to measure the "AE" values of each print which determined whether an allowable color tolerance had been established. In conclusion, the study rejected the stated hypothesis of; there is no significant difference, defined as a "AE" value of less than six (allowable color tolerance), between an offset
press proof produced in accordance with SWOP recommendations, and a halftone gravure print from cylinders produced with the same set of universal films, when using properly extended Group VI gravure inks. Of the ten image areas selected, only two had a “AE" value of less than six. The rejected hypothesis was supported by the suspicion that further addition of clear extender varnish to the gravure inks may not improve the situation. The continuance of this study would be further enhanced by the investigation of the difference, if any, between Group VI gravure inks and the SWOP offset inks in relation to hue, saturation, and brightness.
