1. Rommel Bastos Pereira. Comportamento sexual e a importância do presente nupcial na reprodução de Thaumasia sp. nov. (Araneae: Pisauridae).

Degree: 2009, Universidade de Brasília

The Araneae order has 109 families among which we highlight the Pisauridae. This family houses the nursery-web spiders and spiders strongly associated with water. Although its representatives are well-known and considered interesting models for behavioral studies, this family is still poorly known. The most studied representative of this group is the spider Pisaura mirabilis which male presents the female a prey wrapped up in silk, the nuptial gift, during the courtship. In Brazil the Pisauridae family accounts a total of 32 species distributed in 4 genera (Architis, Dolomedes, Thaumasia e Nilus). The object of this study is a new species from the genus Thaumasia that was found in the outskirts of a satellite city of Brasília-DF, Planaltina (153836S, 474141W). Hence, the purposes of this dissertation were: (1) describe the behavioral ecology of Thaumasia sp. nov.; (2) describe the pre-courtship, courtship and mating behaviors of Thaumasia sp. nov.; (3) analyze the importance of the nuptial gift for the courtship and mating; (4) analyze whether the size of the nuptial gift has any influence on the duration of the copula and in the egg production; (5) verify whether the nuptial gift in Thaumasia sp. nov. protects the male against sexual cannibalism. The behavioral studies of Thaumasia sp.nov. were done through 120 hours of field observations. As for the pre-courtship and mating behaviors, sub-adults and young spiders were collected and reared under laboratory conditions until they mature sexually, then they were separated into three groups: group 1 (no preys), group 2 (small preys) and group 3 (large preys). The importance of the nuptial gift was established since no males from group 1 neither courted nor mated, whilst some males from the other two not only courted the females but some have actually mated. The influence of the size of the gift on the copula duration was verified in our studies, we could not establish a relation between the size of the gift and the egg production. As for the nuptial gift working as a protection against sexual cannibalism, our studies did not confirm this since no male was attacked and/or eaten by any females. Many common aspects between Thaumasia sp. nov. and other representatives from others genera within the Pisauridae family were identified by our work. This dissertation presents some aspects on the reproductive behavior of a new species, but it also exposes the necessity of many other studies in order to provide a full comprehension of the real role of the nuptial gift not only in the Pisauridae family but mainly in the Araneae order.

A ordem Araneae possui 109 famílias dentre as quais destacamos a Pisauridae.
