Moore The thesis of this dissertation is that Christocentric, kingdom-focused expository preaching constitutes the core of faithful biblical proclamation. Expository preaching takes a particular text of Scripture as its subject, proclaiming the truth of that text in light of its historical, epochal, and Christocentric, kingdom-focused canonical contexts, thereby exposing the meaning of the human and divine authors for the purpose of gospel-centered application. Chapter 2 explains the biblical-theological foundations for a Christocentric, kingdom-focused model in contrast to the single-intention-of-the-human-author interpretive methodology, as advocated by Walter C. Kaiser. It identifies Genesis 3:15, Luke 24:25-27, and Luke 25:44-46 as key texts for a Christocentric approach that affirms a canonical sensus plenior and identifies the kingdom of Christ as the unifying center of Scripture. Chapter 3 develops a contemporary model of based on apostolic hermeneutics and proclamation. The chapter contends that contemporary preachers, following the apostles, should be saturated with Scripture, reading and preaching the entire Bible, recognizing the centrality of Christ and the eschatological fulfillment of the kingdom of God through him. Chapter 4 interacts with and offers a summary evaluation of contemporary models of Christocentric expository preaching as represented by the seminal volumes of four prominent authors: Edmund Clowney, Bryan Chapell, Sidney Greidanus, and Graeme Goldsworthy. Each volume advances the cause of Christocentric expository preaching, but none is the final word. Chapter 5 explains the importance of Christocentric, kingdom-focused expository preaching for the local church and explores the dangers of non-Christocentric models. The chapter contends that the difference in these preaching models is not a matter of preference but rather one of effectiveness in kingdom warfare. The chapter emphasizes the necessity of conjoining exposition with a Christocentric focus on the kingdom. Chapter 6 summarizes and concludes the dissertation. Christocentric, kingdom-focused expository preaching is not an optional style but a necessity for faithful proclamation. Practitioners of the approach will of course be prone to error, but to err by preaching the Bible as though it is not all about Christ is a far worse danger. ▼ The primary purpose of this dissertation is to present a Christ-saturated approach to expository preaching. To accomplish this goal, I evaluate the hermeneutics and homiletics of Christ-centered approaches to preaching. In doing so, Christ-saturated preaching has all of the strengths of Christ-centered preaching while resolving some of the inherent hermeneutical and homiletical difficulties in prevailing models of Christ-centered preaching. Chapter 1 explores some confused and complicated definitions of Christ-centered approaches to preaching, examines the current hermeneutical and homiletical issues of Christ-centered approaches to preaching, and states the necessity to present an alternative approach to preaching Christ. Chapter 2 traces the history of Christ-centered preaching back to the controversy between the exemplaristic preaching and redemptive-historical preaching that raged in the Netherlands in the 1940s. At the same time, this chapter explores how redemptive-historical preaching influenced the American pulpit through Geerhardus Vos, Edmund Clowney, Dennis Johnson, Sidney Greidanus, Graeme Goldsworthy, and Bryan Chapell. Chapter 3 examines various definitions and justification of Christ-centered approaches to preaching. This is an essential step toward evaluating the hermeneutics and homiletics of Christ-centered preaching in chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 4 analyzes and evaluates the hermeneutics of Christ-centered approaches to preaching by comparing and contrasting their interpretive methods and ways to find the meaning of the text, the author’s intent, and Christ from every text through Christ-centered biblical theology. Chapter 5 explores the homiletics of Christ-centered preaching, focusing on the ways of finding Christ or a connection to Christ and of applying the text and its significance to the audience. In addition, the homiletics of Christ-centered preaching is evaluated, determining whether or not Christ-centered messages satisfy the pastoral context and the needs of the audience. Chapter 6 suggests some disciplines of a Christ-saturated approach to expository preaching, which satisfies the pastoral context and the needs of the audience as well as the author’s intended meaning and his theology. This chapter concludes that Christ-centered preaching not only neglects the unique features of the text and the author’s intent and theology, but it also ignores the context of the audience. ▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation deals with the appropriation of John S. McClure’s homiletics in view of the Korean context today. This study is to rediscover the role of the congregation, inclusive of the Presbyters, in preaching. John S. McClure’s homiletics is however far removed from the traditional Korean style of preaching. One of the aims of the study was to elaborate on this tension between the two types of homiletics. Traditionally, congregations in the Korean context listen to the sermon from the pulpit in a manner that could be described as mostly passive. Today’s ministers, in the Korean Confucian culture, have misunderstood the congregation as a preacher-centered system. The Preacher's cognition of the audience is that the laity should obey the authority of the preacher, who is an authoritative conveyor of the Word of God. The contention of this thesis is that, if preachers want to have a more direct approach to their audiences, they should have to do research on their congregations as participants in homiletics. This is the reason for the need to have a “conversational homiletics”. Therefore, the preacher needs to know the congregation’s life and their situation. From this perspective, John S. McClure’s homiletics means that the preacher, together with the listeners, should work in collaboration with each other. McClure aims to include the congregation in the sermon; the preacher as well as the hearers participates in the quest for Scripture interpretation. McClure asserted that sermon preparation as a conversation between preacher and congregation should be practiced specifically in the church community. Preachers of the local churches must be hosts and partners of the congregation. In this study, the question is posed: how can McClure’s homiletics be practiced in the Korean Church? In an effort to answer this question, McClure’s theory of preaching is compared with the Reformed/Presbyterian ecclesiology. The point of departure is that historical traditions need to enter into conversation with new theological trends, born from contextual needs. In this light, the study researched the differences between John McClure’s homiletics and the Ecclesiology of the traditional Reformed/Presbyterian Church, by means of a comparative study. On the one hand, it is accepted that the congregation is formed by their cultural traditions, memories, emotions and unique circumstances, while the congregational narrative is furthermore based on the general understanding of sermons by the sermon audiences. On the other hand it is also accepted that the Reformed/Presbyterian tradition has an inherent dialogical nature, also reflected in its historical creeds and catechisms that needs to be re-appropriated. Finally, some guidelines, fences, and boundaries of the collaborative style of preaching are pointed out, with the knowledge that a collaborative sermon will also only be possible through the work of the Holy Spirit. ▼ The thesis argues that Bonhoeffer's homiletics, which has not been fully explored, understands preaching as a pneumatological speech event, whereby the Spirit actualises Christ from Scripture, establishing and sustaining the church, bringing a supremely relevant Word into the world and for the world. To substantiate this claim, Chapter One exposes the impasse in contemporary homiletics and the lack of serious attention given to Bonhoeffer's homiletics in Bonhoeffer scholarship and contemporary homiletics. From there, Chapter Two attends to the centrality of the Word of God and the preached Word for Bonhoeffer's ecclesiology, arguing that, for Bonhoeffer, the Word creates the church. Therefore, Bonhoeffer's other tropes and loci, which are more frequently attended to, are shown to derive from his more fundamental dogmatic concern: the Word of God. Chapter Three unpacks Bonhoeffer's focus by demonstrating that as a theologian of the Word, he is indebted to Luther and Barth. With Bonhoeffer's theological lineage located in a tradition that keeps Word and Spirit together, Chapter Four details Bonhoeffer's pneumatology, which is underappreciated in Bonhoeffer studies, and argues that, for Bonhoeffer, the Spirit actualises the Word in time and space. Chapter Five focuses on Bonhoeffer's pneumatology in relation to the way he sees the Spirit operating within the reception and proclamation of the Word. As Bonhoeffer's homiletics concerns the Gospel of Jesus Christ as Lord of all, Chapter Six shows that the proclaimed Word creates and sustains the church in and for the salvation of the world. Finally, Chapter Seven contends that Bonhoeffer's homiletics overcomes the homiletical deadlock between the overly subjective approach of the New Homiletic and the overly objective approach of Postliberal homiletics. Retrieving pneumatology for homiletics reveals how the Spirit takes the objective Word of God and confronts us in the contemporaneity of our subjective experience. Given Bonhoeffer's theological trajectory, the thesis ends by suggesting implications for post-Christendom homiletics.

▼ This dissertation examines sermon application in the doctrinal preaching of John Piper. The work argues that Piper’s use of application is characterized by multifaceted purpose and the qualities of consistency, creativity, clarity, recurrence, cumulative and/or climactic effect, and contextualization. The critical model utilized involves three primary components: quality, purpose, and doctrine. A representative sample of 700 sermons is analyzed, spanning Piper’s thirty-plus years in the pulpit. Chapter 1 clarifies the thesis, presents an overview of the dissertation’s methodology, and provides research delimitations and background information. Attention is given to the motivations behind the research and the importance of the study. Chapter 2 presents biographical material so that the reader may better understand and appreciate Piper’s practice in the pulpit. His identity as a person, pastor-theologian, and preacher is explored. Chapter 3 addresses the process of study, surveying selected literature on doctrinal preaching and sermon application. Key terms such as doctrinal preaching and sermon application are defined. Moreover, the vital connection between doctrinal preaching and sermon application is demonstrated. Chapter 4 discusses the study’s methodology and describes in detail both the object and method of analysis. The critical model employed, which guided the research, is thoroughly discussed, including the six qualities of sermon application (consistency, creativity, clarity, recurrence, cumulative and/or climactic effect, and contextualization), the four purposes of sermon application (duty, character, goals, and discernment), and the doctrines applied. Chapter 5 presents a segregated analysis of Piper’s preaching utilizing the critical model described in chapter 4. Research findings are thoroughly discussed, in terms of the six qualities, four purposes, and doctrines applied. Chapter 6 presents an integrated analysis of Piper’s doctrinal preaching. Patterns of quality, purpose, doctrine, and co-occurrence are emphasized. Also, the interplay of quality, purpose, and doctrine is demonstrated. Furthermore, development over time and across select sermon series is assessed. Chapter 7 concludes the project, presenting a summary of findings, key insights, major implications, and suggestions for future research. Defining characteristics of Piper’s method are outlined, specifically in terms of the six qualities, the four purposes, and the doctrines applied. ▼ This dissertation develops and demonstrates a method for evaluating a sermon's degree of three aspects: expository merit, doctrinal essence, and Christ-centeredness. The work argues that the gravity of expository, doctrinal, and Christ-centered preaching calls for a substantive and well-balanced method that weighs a sermon's degree regarding these matters. Chapter 1 clarifies the thesis and frames the project in relation to several academic fields. After the methodology is presented, the chapter concludes with a relevant caution concerning the spirit of sermon evaluation. Chapter 2 demonstrates the place for such a project in the field of homiletics. The "combined gravity" of the three aspects is presented through a biblical and theological consideration. The need to speak in terms of degree with regard to evaluation is also presented. Finally, the chapter considers the current state of sermon evaluation in order to show the void in the field of homiletics regarding a substantive and well-balanced method for evaluating the three aspects. Chapters 3 and 4 interact with evangelical scholarship in order to define a substantive foundation for evaluation. Chapter 3 discerns a central concern for each of the three aspects and discusses pertinent matters of clarification. Chapter 4 delineates six distinctive elements for each aspect which are more specific matters of consideration than the broader central concerns. Chapter 5 develops the evaluation method itself. It begins with a discussion of overlapping dynamics among the three aspects. Then a "substance evaluation form" is presented which is followed by the five step method: prayer, listening and notation, evaluation of the central concerns, evaluation of the distinctive elements, and labeling and reflection. Chapter 6 demonstrates the potential for the proposed method through a discussion of the evaluation results from sixty sermons. Three sermons each from twenty evangelical pastors were selected and evaluated. Overall sermon results, individual pastor results, and specific sermon results are presented. Chapter 7 concludes the project with a discussion of its value. It's value is presented in terms of evaluation standards, possible applications of the method, and insights for prescriptive texts. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The possible, valuable contribution of this research is the acknowledgement of the importance of a preacher’s character and wellbeing and the effect it has on his or her sermon. It is an attempt to move our preaching from: A place of shame to courage and freedom; Individualism to community. Being rushed to creating a space where one can see in the silence. Preaching from a title to preaching from within. From trying to be the Saviour to leading them to the One who saves and gave us our titles. Asking the question, “Which results will a homiletically investigation have when one looks at the Preacher in the Dialectic between Vulnerability and Authority?” the following concerns were raised. A lack of clear definitions and misinterpretations for words like authority and vulnerability leads to shame and insecure preachers. A tension between these two terms leads to unhealthy pressure that preachers put on themselves. A few more concerns are how difficult task it is to really preach from within and not primarily from a title. As well as the realisation that having authority as a preacher is not necessarily a given anymore within a context where people are exposed to so many different opinions, especially through the internet. This leaves us with preachers that find themselves in a more vulnerable space than before. ▼ The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain to what extent D.T. Niles’ theory of preaching is Reformed and Biblical and can help in the dialogue between Western and Non-Western Christianity. The study achieves this aim by employing the qualitative case-study research to meet four objectives. First, it describes Niles’ theory of preaching as found in his trilogy of lectures on preaching, explicating especially the double calling of the preacher, the double content and the pneumatological character and nature of preaching, the three-fold purpose and double consequences of preaching. Second, it interprets Niles’ theory of preaching in the light of his own cultural background and in dialogue with the works of key Reformation figures including Erasmus, Zwingli, Luther, Calvin and Bullinger’s Second Helvetic Confession. Based on this examination, the study determines that Niles’ homiletical theory is in concert with the theology of preaching of the Magisterial Reformers as summarised in Bullinger’s classic statement: ‘The preaching of the word of God is the word of God’ . Third, this study evaluates critically Niles’ theory of preaching within the normative context of the preaching of Jesus in the Synagogue in Nazareth and the wider New Testament teaching on preaching and finds that Niles’ homiletical theory is in agreement with Scriptural norm. Fourth, having found Niles’ theory of preaching to be broadly in concert with the understanding of the Reformers and the Biblical teaching on the nature of preaching, this study undertakes the pragmatic task of developing a global theology of preaching that would promote dialogue between Western and Non-Western Christianity. This study was undertaken because of the dearth of theologies of preaching written from a Non-Western perspective and the lack of dialogue between Western and Non-Western homiletical theories. The result of the investigation is the conclusion that the preaching of the word of God is the word of God since preaching is a pneumatological event where God is present in the act of human preaching so long as the preacher himself is lawfully called and the content of his preaching is Christological and soteriological.

▼ The primary purpose of this dissertation is to study the necessity of genre consideration in the three important sermon-making process – exegetical, theological, and homiletical – and propose a holistic preaching methodology for the lament psalms with genre-sensitivity. Chapter 1 discusses the definitional nature, criteria, and communicational function of genre and examines the current defective and deficient preaching method with genre-sensitivity, and also indicates the lack of concern of the lament psalms in biblical preaching. Chapter 2 examines a holistic exegetical method for preaching a lament psalm by emphasizing the necessity of the analysis and appreciation of the mood of the text based upon the interlocking nature of genre-based textual elements (the message, medium, and mood of the text) and genre-based contextual element (the purpose of the text). This chapter provides a step-by step holistic procedure for preaching a lament psalm with genre-sensitivity. Chapter 3 investigates the necessity of genre consideration in the theological process. ▼ This dissertation assesses – from an evangelical perspective – Phillips Brooks's classic definition of preaching as "truth through personality" and, after pinpointing its substantial deficiencies, reconstructs it with evangelical doctrines. Chapter 1 describes the legacy of Brooks's definition among evangelicals. Chapter 2 provides the contextual information necessary for evaluating Brooks's thought, with attention given to the way that he responded to the influences of romanticism in the late nineteenth century. Chapter 3 unveils Christ's incarnation as the foundation for Brooks's preaching definition, and observes the way that his formulation and anthropocentric application of the doctrine shapes his "truth through personality" concept. Chapter 4 evaluates Brooks's definition in light of evangelical foundations for preaching, and identifies its three significant dangers. First, "truth through personality" promotes a nonpropositional form of revelation in which the preacher's thoughts on truth trump the truthfulness of Scripture. Second, the definition forces too close an association between God's Word and the preacher by conceiving preaching as a replica of the incarnation – an ontological impossibility and an unbiblical notion. Third, "truth through personality" embraces a classical form of rhetorical ethos that is consistent with Quintillian, but inadmissible in Christian preaching. Tested against Pauline literature, Brooks's approach to ethos appears biblically deficient and adverse to the gospel. Chapter 5 proposes that the phrase, "truth through personality," best serves preaching when conceived as an axiom and not as a definition, and asserts that an evangelical construction of the phrase emerges only from biblical anthropological and soteriological doctrines. Constructing the phrase in an evangelical manner, though, requires three clarifications. First, preaching extends God's mode of special revelation – through human personality – not ontologically or phenomenologically, but functionally as a means of accommodating human weakness. Second, preaching – as a person-to-person encounter – forms a means by which God accomplishes his saving work. Third, when informed by evangelical anthropology and soteriology, "truth through personality" maintains the notion of the preacher as a personal witness to a divine message, not as another incarnation. Finally, the chapter discusses the practical implications of an evangelical construction of "truth through personality," including personal presentation and sermon application. KELLER Michael Raymond Galdamez, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2012 Chair: Dr. Robert A. Vogel The thesis of this dissertation is that J. Gresham Machen and Timothy J. Keller provide contemporary pulpits with two examples of preachers who present a consistent worldview. This thesis is demonstrated through a description and evaluation of their preaching based on four elements of a worldview in James Sire's book The Universe Next Door. By presenting Machen and Keller as examples of worldview preaching, this dissertation provides a study on the use of the worldview concept in evangelical preaching, in order to discover what these two preachers consistently do in their preaching so as to be categorized as worldview preachers. Thus the study provides homiletic students with two examples of how the worldview concept might be applied to contemporary preaching. Chapter 2 presents a brief biographical sketch of Machen and Keller in order to set their writings and preaching in their distinct historical and cultural contexts. Specific focus is upon Machen's battle with theological modernism and Keller's ministry to skeptical New Yorkers through Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Chapter 3 provides descriptions of Machen's and Keller's worldviews. These descriptions are organized around Sire's four worldview elements. A number of their popular writings are examined and summarized in order to construct their worldviews from Sire's paradigm. This chapter provides the basis for the evaluation of their preaching in chapter 4. Chapter 4 evaluates Machen's and Keller's preaching based on their consistency with their constructed worldviews of chapter 3. This evaluation provides enough description to demonstrate the level of consistency between their stated worldviews and what they in fact preach in the pulpit. Chapter 5 compares and contrasts Machen's and Keller's worldview preaching in order to specify areas of strengths and weaknesses in their worldview preaching. This comparison of their preaching also provides some reflection on the application of Machen's and Keller's approach for contemporary preachers. Chapter 6 provides a summary and conclusion of this dissertation. Worldview preaching is essential in the preaching ministry of the evangelical church. Vogel Chapter 1 introduces the subject of this dissertation, which deals with the relationship between a biblical text’s substance and structure to that of a sermon’s substance and structure from that text. After stating the thesis of this dissertation—that expository preaching considers the arrangement of the text, is sensitive to the genre of the text and aware of the rhetorical impact of the text in order to faithfully and effectively communicate the Word of God—the introduction outlines the approach that this work follows. Chapter 2 begins by exploring the origin of inspiration as that of both divine and human. B. B. Warfield refers to this divine-human cooperation as the Spirit of God working confluently through the work of men. The chapter emphasizes how this divine-human cooperation came through a verbal-plenary view of inspiration. If inspiration extends to not only the writer’s thoughts but also his words, then the literary forms in the Bible are equally inspired. Therefore, the extent of the doctrine of inspiration to that of genre is of great importance to this dissertation. Chapter 3 describes the importance of hermeneutics and genre. I state my presupposition for authorial intent and single meaning of the text. Upon this authorial intent and single meaning foundation, I discuss principles for hermeneutics in general. More specifically, I establish the crucial role of literary sensitivity in the hermeneutical task. Essential in understanding the genre is an awareness of surface and notional structures, as well as what the author is doing (speech act) through that particular genre (structure). In short, to ignore literary form, as D. A. Carson insists, is to fall prey of two dangers: to insist that Scripture is saying what in fact it is not saying or to indeed miss what Scripture is actually saying. The chapter provides interpretative guidelines for genre sensitivity by exploring five primary genres found in the Bible. Chapter 4 discusses the aim of rhetoric and, in particular, the significance of the canon of arrangement on a given discourse. After discussing the aim of rhetoric and homiletics as that of persuasion for maximum impact, this chapter focuses upon the canon of arrangement and, thus, the reality that structure argues. The chapter then offers similarities and differences of the canon of arrangement with that of expository homiletics. Beougher This dissertation examines worldview preaching in a post-Christian culture. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of worldview preaching and its necessity for evangelism within the church of the twenty-first century. This chapter also defines terms used throughout and establishes the methodology for the research. Chapter 2 takes a more in-depth look at presuppositional “apologetical preaching” and its application to the study of worldview in evangelistic preaching. This chapter also shows the difference between apologetical preaching and expositional preaching and suggests apologetical preaching as a needed corrective. Chapter 3 argues that worldview preaching is a form of spiritual warfare. This chapter also outlines the ways that preaching is spiritual warfare in three areas: battle with the flesh, battle with the world, and battle with Satan. Chapter 4 introduces the concept of sermon-driven discipleship. It is argued in this chapter that evangelism cannot be separated from discipleship and that evangelistic preaching necessarily focuses on discipleship as well. This chapter also shows how worldview preaching can direct the discipleship ministries of the church. Chapter 5 investigates examples of worldview preaching. It is argued in this chapter that some preachers from the past and present practice the form of worldview preaching advocated in this dissertation without having applied the particular terms associated with this research project. This chapter critiques those who have adopted secular worldviews in their preaching as well as those who have adapted their message delivery to fit the secular world. Chapter 6 examines the deficiency of worldview emphasis in preaching literature. It commends John Stott’s approach, but also shows that bridging the two worlds doesn’t go far enough. This chapter then surveys a number of preaching texts for their emphasis on worldview and presuppositional apologetics in their treatment of preaching. The purpose of this dissertation was tο research parabolic speech and its particular contribution to the practical preaching of the Church. We also examined all its subdivisions, namely the terms parable, likeness, proverb, adage, apothegmata, enigmas, allegory, typology, metaphor, image, myth, symbol and anthropomorphic discourse about god. We have defined their meaning and have traced their presence, use, frequency, functionality and teaching potential, as they appear in rhetoric, ancient Greek literature, the Judaic tradition, the texts of the Old Testament, the rabbinic literature, manuscripts of the Qumran and in the apocryphal and psevdepigrapha texts of Judaic orientation. Our research also proceeded to the books of the new testament, namely the gospels, the acts of the apostles, the apostolic epistles, the revelation of John and the apocryphal texts. We also engaged in the homiletic evaluation of the parables of Christ and presented those elements that gave the occasion for deeper reflection on matters relating to the mystery of God΄s kingdom, the need for vigilance in view of the sudden presence of Christ, God's love for sinners, the love of men as a response to divine love and their trust in divine providence. Finally, we refer to the practical content of preaching, the teaching dynamics of internal supervision, and exposed our concerns regarding contemporary preaching.

Σκοπός της διατριβής αυτής ήταν η ερευνητική προσέγγιση του παραβολικού λόγου και της συμβολής του στο πρακτικό κήρυγμα της Εκκλησίας. Εξετάσαμε όλες τις υποδιαιρέσεις του παραβολικού λόγου που από κοινού αποτελούν το περιεχόμενό του. Δηλαδή τους όρους παραβολή, παρομοίωση, παροιμία, γνωμικά, αποφθέγματα, αινίγματα, αλληγορία, τυπολογία, μεταφορά, εικόνα, μύθος, σύμβολο και ανθρωπομορφικός λόγος περί του Θεού. Ορίσαμε τη έννοια τους και εντοπίσαμε την παρουσία, τη χρήση, τη συχνότητα, την λειτουργικότητα και τη διδακτική τους δυναμική, όπως εμρανίζονται στις Ρητορικές, στην αρχαία ελληνική γραμματεία, στην ιουδαϊκή παράδοση, δηλαδή στα γραπτά κείμενα της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, στην Ραββινική Γραμματεία, στα χειρόγραφα του Κουμράν και στα απόκρυφα και ψευδεπίγραφα κείμενα ιουδαϊκού προσανατολισμού. Η έρευνά μας προχώρησε και στα βιβλία της Καινής Διαθήκης, δηλαδή στα Ευαγγέλια, τις Πράξεις των Αποστόλων, στην αποστολική επιστολογραφία, στην Αποκάλυψη του Ιωάννη και στα Απόκρυφα κείμενα.΄Ασχοληθήκαμε επίσης με την ομιλητική αποτίμηση των παραβολών του Χριστού και παρουσιάσαμε τα στοιχεία εκείνα που δίνουν την αφορμή για βαθύτερο προβληματισμό σε θέματα που αφορούν στο μυστήριο της βασιλείας του Θεού, στην ανάγκη της εγρήγορσης εν όψει της αιφνίδιας παρουσίας του Χριστού, στην αγάπη του Θεού προς τους αμαρτωλούς, στην αγάπη των ανθρώπων ως απάντηση στη θεία αγάπη και στην εμπιστοσύνη τους απέναντι στη θεία πρόνοια. Τέλος αναφερθήκαμε στο πρακτικό περιεχόμενο του κηρύγματος ,καταγράψαμε τη διδακτική δυναμική της εσωτερικής εποπτείας και εκθέσαμε τους προβληματισμούς μας όσον αφορά στην σύγχρονη κηρυγματική δεοντολογία.

▼ RELIGION HER PREACHING BODY: A QUALITATIVE STUDY IN MEANING, AGENCY AND PROCLAMATION IN CONTEMPORARY FEMALE PREACHERS AMY P. MCCULLOUGH Dissertation under the direction of Professor Ted A. Smith While homiletics has long recognized the importance of the preacher’s body, its theories have been dominated by prescriptive advice about best postures, voices and movements. Scholarship has also been governed by an assent to the male preaching body amid an increasingly diverse field of preaching bodies. Consequently, the actual body of the preacher awaits full examination as an essential resource for preaching. This dissertation seeks an exploration of the preacher’s body by beginning with the preacher’s experience of her body as she prepares to and does preach. It assumes a phenomenological foundation based on the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, in which meaning always emerges from a person’s perceiving, acting body or their “being in the world.” Fourteen contemporary female preachers participated in a qualitative study focused on the decisions they made about their bodies in relation to their preaching. Through interviews and one-on-one observations, the preachers revealed their choices around clothing, accessories, preaching posture, voice and movement. They shared stories of preaching amid pregnancies and with the challenges of a chronic disease. To analyze their choices, the researcher employed a lived body approach. The lived body theory defines embodiment as the complex and evolving interaction of an individual’s materiality, culture and agency. Believing we are our bodies whenever we preach, this study pushed towards uncovering the meaning preachers assigned to and discovered in their embodied preaching decisions. At the outset, this dissertation was concerned with agency. The researcher hoped to gain insight into how women encountered bodily constraints and labored towards bodily freedom. While freedom and constraint were not without value, deeper insights emerged in how a preacher grasped the knowledge within her body and came to understand herself as an embodied being. A preacher’s recognition of the embodied nature of all life, which contains both depth and contradiction, heightened her capacity to view embodiment as a tool for proclamation. The move towards self-conscious and intentional embodiment calls for changes in how homiletics conceives of a fully embodied sermon and how homileticians teach preaching. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The value of the congregation in preaching is underestimated in the Korean church, an institution unfamiliar with having the congregation participate in preaching. Preaching has, instead, been hierarchical and preacher-centered, with the congregation playing a passive role. Authoritarianism of the preacher in the Korean church, a consequence of traditional Korean religions and Korean socio-history, was found to be a fundamental cause of hierarchical, preacher-centered preaching. However, a number of homiletical problems arise from this form of preaching. The importance of the congregation in preaching has been neglected, leaving the congregation with little opportunity to have a positive impact on preaching. Additionally, in light of the changing views towards authoritarianism, and the impact of these changes on Korean churches, much criticism for hierarchical and preacher-centered preaching has come about. In order to overcome the problems arising from hierarchical and preacher-centered preaching, this dissertation highlights the congregation as a valuable preaching partner. Using McClure’s homiletics, and an understanding of the most fundamental elements of preaching, the Word of God, the preacher, and the congregation, as understood in The Roundtable Pulpit, an alternative to preacher-centered preaching is presented: collaborative preaching. This form of preaching overcomes the problem of a submissive congregation, and encourages the congregation to participate in preaching. Collaborative preaching has both positive and negative attributes. While it recognizes the congregation as an important preaching partner and creates an environment in which the congregation can participate in preaching, conversations with the congregation that do not involve a certain level of theological capability in the interpretation of the Bible may cause a disconnect between the preacher and the congregation. Another anticipated limitation of applying collaborative preaching, with regards to Korean churches specifically, is that these churches are not yet sufficiently ready for it. Moving towards collaborative preaching without reducing the gap that currently exists between the preacher and the congregation may cause confusion among the congregation. The suggestion this dissertation makes for overcoming these limitations is encouraging the preacher to abandon a distorted sense of authority and to change his perspective to one where the congregation is a partner in preaching. This is a priority for narrowing the gap between himself and his congregation. However, sufficient preparation is necessary to achieve this.

▼ Effective preaching for contemporary man Mankind has been in a state of flux through the ages. It follows that the church, to remain relevant and effective, should also adapt contiuously in its approach to the delivery of its message. In our research a literature study was undertaken of contemporary man – attention was paid to distinctive traits, characteristics and the manner in which he argues and thinks about specific matters. This information was derived to establish what the most effective approach to contemporary preaching should be. This study largely emphasised the needs of contemporary man. However, effective preaching should not only focus on the needs, but should also consider and deal with them in the light of God’s Word. A literature study of Bibilical expectations of preaching was then done to ascertain if there is similarity between the expectations of contemporary mankind and the Bibilical expectations of ministering. The outcome showed that the needs of mankind concur mainly with what has to take place, according to the Bible, in preaching the Word. These needs may be met through Biblical understanding ofchange, hope, healing and repair, and especially teaching the essence of daily living. The people of our time do not only have a problem with the content of the sermon, but also with the manner of presentation. In practical theology there is constant interaction with the science of communication to find principles or concepts that may assist in the delivery of the sermon. Two factors – the fact that the literature study of Biblical expectations of ministering placed so much emphasis on the element of learning, and the present generation’s preference for inductive instead of deductive teaching – forced us to investigate Outcomes-based Education and possibly obtain assistance and guidance regarding sermon delivery (learning). This study provided interesting perceptions which can be applied effectively in preaching. Much was gained regarding the planning of the message, the application of various preaching strategies when compiling the contents, as well as an evaluation system to measure how successful the message was put across. The research information was processed and from the findings guidelines were found that could make the sermon more effective. The following aspects are regarded as the most important: Preaching should focus on the person’s subjective perceptions; in other words, his emotions, feelings and experiences. Following the impact of the modern period today’s people are in dire need of love, acceptance, warmth and sincere outreach. These needs may be met through the cultivation of sincere relations, having real understanding for their behaviour and way of thinking, and also by addressing their anxieties in the sermon.A further aspect requiring attention is the desire of the people to participate in the ministering process. ▼ This dissertation examines the preaching activities and sermons of Benedictine monks in England in the roughly two centuries before the Reformation. Though the medieval pulpit is commonly envisioned by historians primarily as the domain of the friars, in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century England the black monks regularly made it their own, preaching salvation, chastising negligent priests, and denouncing heresy. In this study I set out to examine Benedictine preaching, especially through their sermons to or about the laity, and what it reveals about their place in the religious landscape of late medieval England. Preaching took on a new importance for the Benedictines in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Competing with other religious orders and foundations for influence and devotion among the laity, popular preaching became a way for the monks to maintain their presence and pastoral leadership in the English Church. Though seemingly incongruous with their vocation, Benedictine writers and preachers defended their popular preaching as an integral part of their way of life, supported by historical precedent and their own interpretation of the Rule. University learning was pressed into the service of training Benedictine brothers as preachers and monastic superiors encouraged monasteries to offer sermons for the laity. As a result the Benedictine black habit became a familiar sight on England’s pulpits, right up to the Dissolution when no one wore habits anymore. Through their preaching, the black monks offered an important pastoral service to the Church and secured their place among the friars and others as elite preachers of the day. But their preaching also illustrates the relevance and influence of the Benedictines in English religious life in the lead up to the Reformation. Through their preaching, the Benedictines maintained regular contact and interaction with the laity and played an important part in their search for salvation. This study challenges us to rethink old narratives of late medieval monasticism as insular and irrelevant to wider society. Advisors/Committee Members: John Van Engen, Research Director.

This dissertation examines the intersection of law and monastic literature in the Speculum religiosorum (c.1322), a guide to the monastic life, written by the English parish priest and doctor of canon law William of Pagula (c.1285-1332). William’s Speculum is unique among monastic treatises in that it incorporates a long compendium of monastic law. The introduction provides context for the Speculum through an overview of the history of monastic reform from the mid-eleventh century to the fourteenth. In chapter one, I examine the manuscripts of the Speculum religiosorum, its relationship to William’s other works, and its sources. The non-legal contents of the Speculum come mostly from the Bible, the Fathers, and Cistercian writers, but I show that William’s sources for this material were often more recent compilations, such as Thomas of Ireland’s Manipulus florum. In chapter two I argue that the Speculum belongs to a genre that I call “encyclopedic manuals of monastic formation,” but that the work also has an important relationship with sermons and preaching aids. Chapters three and four cover the legal contents of the Speculum. Chapter three is an overview of monastic law from Gratian’s Decretum to the Clementines (1311), with an emphasis on the English context. Chapter four surveys compendia of monastic law in fourteenth-century England. I argue that William’s legal methodology is more sophisticated than that of similar works. In Chapter five, I demonstrate that wisdom is the governing theme for the Speculum as a whole. I argue that William encourages his audience to treat law as a form of wisdom, and to internalize it through meditative reading. I provide parallel examples from other monastic contexts. William’s conception of wisdom combines elements from Augustine and from monastic exegesis of biblical wisdom literature. I conclude by observing that the Speculum does not allow for a neat division between pastoral, legal, and monastic literature.
