Os Potencias Evocados Auditivos de Estado Estável (PEAEE) têm sido apontados como uma alternativa aos Potenciais Evocados Auditivos de Tronco Encefálico (PEATE) para estimar os limiares auditivos em crianças que não conseguem realizar a avaliação auditiva comportamental com procedimentos condicionados. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a aplicabilidade dos PEAEE para estimar os limiares auditivos em crianças com perda auditiva neurossensorial, comparando-os os outros procedimentos disponíveis para esta avaliação. Participaram deste estudo 15 crianças com idades entre 2 meses e 3 anos, todas com perda auditiva neurossensorial. As respostas obtidas nos PEAEE nas freqüências de 1, 2 e 4 kHz foram comparadas com as do PEATE-clique; as respostas dos PEAEE nas freqüências de 0.5, 1, 2 e 4 kHz foram comparadas com as dos PEATE por freqüência específica (PEATE-FE) e com a audiometria de reforço visual (VRA). Os resultados encontrados mostraram boas concordâncias entre as respostas dos PEAEE nas altas freqüências e as respostas dos PEATE-clique (0.63 - 0.70), sendo a melhor correlação para a freqüência de 1 kHz (0.70). Quando os PEAEE foram comparados aos PEATE-FE também foram observadas boas concordâncias, com coeficientes de 0.77, 0.60, 0.66 e 0.50 para as freqüências de 0.5, 1, 2 e 4 kHz. Todavia, os melhores coeficientes obtidos foram da comparação dos PEAEE com a VRA (0.89 0.93), indicando forte concordância entre as técnicas. Os resultados mostraram que, quando comparados aos outros procedimentos eletrofisiológicos disponíveis para estimar a audição, os PEAEE forneceram medidas bem semelhantes, assim como quando comparados a VRA; demonstrando ser uma técnica viável para estimar os limiares auditivos de forma objetiva quando a VRA pode não ser possível

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) has been suggested as an alternative to the auditory brainstem response (ABR) to estimate the hearing threshold in children who are unable to carry out the tests with conditioned behavioral hearing procedures. The purpose of this study was to verify the applicability of ASSR to estimate the hearing thresholds in children with sensorineural hearing loss, comparing them to other procedures available for this assessment. The study included 15 children ages between 2 months and 3 years old, with sensorineural hearing loss. The ASSR obtained in 1, 2 and 4 kHz were compared with click ABR; the ASSR at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz were compared with the tone-ABR and with the visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA). The results showed good concordance between the ASSR at high frequencies with the responses of click ABR (0.63 - 0.70), being the best correlation for 1 kHz (0.70). When compared to tone-ABR it could be seen good concordance between the techniques, with coefficients of 0.77, 0.60, 0.66 and 0.50 for the frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. ▼ Lake Sidney Lanier is the primary source of water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. Its watershed is critical to the economic well being of the region and the State of Georgia as highlighted by the recent drought and the impact of the consequent water shortage. This project is a study of spatially distributed Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) based erosion and sedimentation in the Lake Lanier watershed. The non-point source erosion study was performed for 1984, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2001 and 2005, using Landsat imagery, State Soil Geographic (SSURGO) soil data, State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soil data, the National Land Cover Data (NLCD) and 30-m U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The sedimentation modeling was done for 1984, 1991, 1999 and 2005. The time period of this study has seen a major change in land cover in the watershed, which has important implications for water quality. This remote sensing and GIS based modeling was done for 30-m x 30-m grid cells, and shows the erosion 'hot-spots' in the watershed, their proximity to streams and their time evolution over the period of this study. The erosion modeling also identified the regions where the erosion exceeds the soil loss tolerances, highlighting these locations for soil conservation efforts. The spatially distributed sedimentation model is based on an empirically derived µdrainage area vs. sediment delivery ratio (SDR)relationship. The erosion modeling provides the supply grid of eroded soil that is available to the sediment transport process. The sedimentation model provides a spatial distribution of the sediment deposition potential at every 30-m pixel, which is indicative of the highest upslope loading of sediment at that location. The querying of the sediment potential in the vicinity of the streams identifies the stream segments that are the most vulnerable to sediment input and associated pollutants. An index of impairment is proposed that helps determine the locations in the watershed most susceptible to sediment deposition. Viable comparisons of this spatially distributed erosion modeling with sediment discharge measurements of Faye et al. (1980) and Leigh (1998) lend confidence in the data and methods used in this study. Calibration of this model with more sediment discharge measurements can help in the effort to define and implement sediment Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL's). This study lays a foundation for more detailed spatially distributed erosion and sedimentation studies of the Lake Lanier watershed, conducted at higher spatial and temporal resolutions.

▼ Even though anesthetics are widely used in the medical practice, there are still unresolved issues which relate to their mechanisms of action and therefore to their ability to induce loss of consciousness. Since a large number of very different chemical molecules are used in general anesthesia, a large variety of potential molecular targets might exist. Some of these might relate to axonal conduction and membrane excitability. In some cases, this action could either occur at the presynaptic level, modifying the neurotransmitter release and reuptake machineries, or at the postsynaptic level, modifying the number and/or sensitivity of post-synaptic receptors. These functional alterations might also selectively affect one or more specific neuronal phenotypes. Nevertheless, despite the complexity of their molecular targets, all general anesthetics induce a profound inhibition of the awake functions without suppressing the cortical EEG activity and sparing evoked cortical responses. Therefore, anesthetics should lead to the loss of consciousness by altering the signal processing of the brain, rather than by abolishing its activity. Based on these considerations, I began the investigation of the electrophysiological alterations induced by various classes of general anesthetics, on the activity of the rat visual system to uncover some aspects of their mechanisms of action. In this project I compared the effects of three states of anesthesia induced by two different molecules, sevofluorane, a volatile general anesthetic, and propofol, which is intravenously injected. For these experiments rats were curarized, mechanically ventilated and the body temperature was controlled. During states of anesthesia, visual evoked potentials were recorded by means of superficial electrodes implanted in the skull. Two functional properties of the visual processing were evaluated: i) the sensitivity to stimuli of different brightness and ii) the dichotomy of the ON/OFF response, which is essential for contrast detection. Moreover, the EEG resting activity was recorded. The preliminary results showed that the overall basal cortical activity was reduced in a comparative manner between the two drugs throughout the three states of anesthesia. Otherwise, significant differences were found in the power of alpha and gamma EEG oscillations and in the effects on the visual evoked activity, suggesting the presence of two very distinct circuital mechanisms of action and providing novel information about the ability of anesthetics to induce loss of consciousness. ▼ Esta dissertação, O dispositivo conto de fadas na clínica com crianças que apresentam déficit de simbolização tem como objetivo discutir a utilização dos contos de fadas como possibilidade de intervenção na clínica psicanalítica infantil, especialmente nas situações associadas a falhas no processo de simbolização. Esse déficit está presente em todas aquelas situações onde há a impossibilidade de elaboração dos sentimentos através do pensamento e das palavras, ficando prejudicadas as formas de expressão. Para o entendimento do processo de simbolização, bem como de seu déficit, apoiamo-nos na teoria de desenvolvimento emocional de Winnicott, que considera que a partir da interação mãe-bebê surge a possibilidade de desenvolvimento simbólico. Dessa maneira, na presença de um cuidador atento, interessado e emocionalmente engajado, o bebê pode constituir seu espaço psíquico. Por sua vez, os contos de fadas podem ser considerados como um cenário, onde a criança pode simbolizar seus conflitos e, portanto, nutrir seu psiquismo de símbolos. Nesse sentido, eles permitem que a criança elabore as vivências conflitivas e as emoções em um mundo simbólico e ficcional, oferecendo possibilidades de resolução para seus conflitos. Neste estudo, descrevemos a pesquisa desenvolvida na clinica-escola da UNISINOS, junto a duas crianças de 8 e 9 anos, com sintomatologia associada ao déficit de simbolização. Assim, a proposta deste estudo foi realizar uma intervenção, a Hora do Conto, que utilizava o dispositivo conto de fadas, avaliando suas possibilidades na clinica infantil. O método de intervenção foram as consultas terapêuticas de Winnicott (1971/1984), tendo sido realizado um estudo de caso com cada criança, a fim de evidenciar as especificidades de cada uma e de seu processo ao longo da pesquisa. Podemos destacar como principais resultados a possibilidade de criação de um espaço transicional, bem como um aumento na capacidade de simbolização de ambas as crianças, no sentido de acessar e nomear estados internos, processos avaliados na evolução do teste CAT (aplicação inicial e final) e nas consultas de atendimento. Como conclusão, verificou-se a possibilidade de utilização dos contos de fada na clínica infantil, destacando-se os aspectos de singularidade que estes assumiram para cada investigado. Recently, the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) has been suggested as an alternative to the auditory brainstem response (ABR) to estimate the hearing threshold in children who are unable to carry out the tests with conditioned behavioral hearing procedures. The purpose of this study was to verify the applicability of ASSR to estimate the hearing thresholds in children with sensorineural hearing loss, comparing them to other procedures available for this assessment. The study included 15 children ages between 2 months and 3 years old, with sensorineural hearing loss. The ASSR obtained in 1, 2 and 4 kHz were compared with click ABR; the ASSR at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz were compared with the tone-ABR and with the visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA). The results showed good concordance between the ASSR at high frequencies with the responses of click ABR (0.63 - 0.70), being the best correlation for 1 kHz (0.70). When compared to tone-ABR it could be seen good concordance between the techniques, with coefficients of 0.77, 0.60, 0.66 and 0.50 for the frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. ▼ Three studies were performed to examine biophysical sources of individual variability in the thermoregulatory responses to exercise, and the influence of skin blood flow on heat loss potential during severe heat stress. Study 1 investigated whether unbiased comparisons of changes in rectal temperature (ΔTre) should be compared at a fixed absolute rate of heat production (Hprod; W) or a fixed Hprod per unit mass (W/kg), and whether local sweat rates (LSR) should be compared at a fixed evaporative requirement for heat balance (Ereq; W) or a fixed Ereq per unit of surface area (W/m2), between independent groups of unequal body mass and body surface area (BSA). Study 2 examined whether individual variation in ΔTre, whole-body sweat loss (WBSL), and steady-state LSR is best explained by biophysical factors related to Hprod, Ereq, and body size, and if factors related to aerobic fitness (VO2max) and body fatness correlate with the residual variance in these responses. Study 3 tested whether alterations in skin blood flow shift the critical vapour pressure (Pcrit) above which core temperature could no longer be regulated in hot/humid conditions, indicating altered heat loss potential from the skin. In study 1, exercise at fixed absolute Hprod and Ereq resulted in greater ΔTre and LSR in smaller individuals (smaller mass and BSA), but exercise at set Hprod in W/kg and Ereq in W/m2 resulted in no differences in ΔTre and LSR, respectively, regardless of body size and %VO2max. In study 2, 50-71% of the individual variation in ΔTre, whole-body sweat loss (WBSL), and steady-state LSR was explained by Hprod (W/kg), absolute Ereq (W) and Ereq (W/m2) respectively, while body fat percentage and %VO2max contributed merely 1-4% to the total variability. In study 3, despite a ~20% lower skin blood flow, Pcrit was unaffected by a large reduction in skin blood flow following iso-smotic dehydration, with no differences in core and skin temperatures and sweating observed. Collectively, these findings suggest that between-group comparisons and modelling of thermoregulatory responses must first consider biophysical factors related to metabolic heat production and body size, rather than factors related to VO2max and body fatness. Furthermore, lower levels of skin blood flow may not impair maximum heat dissipation from the skin to the external environment during severe passive heat stress as previously thought.

▼ The purpose of this research was to explore the effects of small monetary or economic gains and/or losses on choice behavior through the use of a computerized game and to determine gain/loss ratio differences using both behavioral and electrophysiological measures. Participants (N=53) played the game in several 36 minute sessions. These sessions operated with concurrent variable-interval schedules for both rewards and penalties. Previously, asymmetrical effects of gains and losses have been identified through cognitive studies, primarily due to the work of nobel laureates Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky (1979). They found that the effect of a loss is twice (i.e., 2:1) that of a gain. Similar results have been observed in the behavioral laboratory as exemplified by the research of Rasmussen and Newland (2008), who found a 3:1 ratio for the effect of losses versus gains. The asymmetry of gains and losses was estimated behaviorally and through event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and the cognitive (Kahneman and Tversky) and behavioral (Rasmussen and Newland) discrepancy elucidated. In the game, the player moves an animated submarine around sea rocks to collect yellow coins and other treasures on the sea floor. Upon collecting a coin, one of three things can happen: The player triggers a penalty (loss), the player triggers a payoff (gain), or there is no change. The behavioral measures consisted in counting the number of clicks, reinforces, and punishers and then determining ratio differences between punished (loss) and no punished condition (gain) conditions. The obtained gain/loss ratio corresponded to an asymmetry of 2:1. Similarly ratio differences were found between male and female, virtual money and cash, risk averse versus risk seeking, and generosity versus profit behavior. Also, no ratio difference was found when players receive information about other player's performances in the game (players with information versus players without information). In electroencephalographic (EEG) studies, visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and ERPs components (e.g., P300) were examined. I found increased ERP amplitudes for the losses in relation to the gains that corresponded to the calculated behavioral asymmetry of 2:1. A correlational strategy was adopted that sought to identify neural correlates of choice consistent with cognitive and behavioral approaches. In addition, electro cortical ratio differences were observed between different sets of electrodes that corresponded to the front, middle, and back sections of the brain; differences between sessions, risk averse and risk seeking behavior and sessions with concurrent visual and auditory stimuli and only visual were also estimated.

▼ Zinc-blende structured materials have received considerable attentions due to their excellent performance in many fields. The major benefit has attributed to high power space energy systems and nuclear reactors. Their applications can expose to high energy radiation, including neutrons, ions and cosmic rays. Under these conditions, defects are generated in materials in amounts significantly exceeding their equilibrium concentrations. The accumulation of defects can lead to undesired consequences, which may alter the performance of the materials. Therefore, the fundamental understanding of ion-solid interaction and defect evolution is a key factor to the success of both nuclear and electronic materials. This thesis focuses on the study of zinc-blende materials, including GaAs, GaN, InAs, and SiC for their possible applications in both nuclear and space fields. SiC has unique capability in the applications of nuclear fuel. In tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles, SiC coating is considered as a major barrier for the release of fission products (FPs). However, some metallic FPs (i.e. Ag, Pd, Ru, and I) release from fully intact fuel particles raises serious concern on the safety of high temperature gas-cooled reactors. This thesis first addresses atomistic process of FP diffusion in SiC. Ab initio calculations are used to determine the defects configurations, migration energy barriers and pathways of FPs in SiC. Based on the ab initio results, the interatomic potentials of FP-SiC are developed and evaluated to link between the density functional theory and next coarser level. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been employed to investigate FP accommodation in SiC, interactions with point defects and grain boundaries (GBs), and their diffusion kinetics. These findings lead to a conclusion that the GB diffusion of FPs is faster than bulk diffusion with a strong segregation at the GBs. Analysis of the radiation enhanced diffusion obtained by experiments and diffusion by modeling work for Ru and I has suggested the interstitial migration is likely to be a major mechanism under irradiation condition. Moreover, the diffusivities can vary by GB types, whereas high energetic GBs can provide the fastest paths for FPs to diffuse. Particularly, an elevation of 1.5 J/m2 in GB energy can result in 2-3 orders of magnitude difference in Ag diffusion coefficient. We have further explored the defect production, clustering, and its evolution in GaAs, GaN, and InAs, and determined non-ionizing energy loss (NIEL) that indicates the rate of degradation in electronic devices in space applications. Nonlinear defect production is observed with an increasing of primary knock-on (PKA) energy in GaAs and InAs. This effect, which corresponds to the direct-impact amorphization, is observed for PKA energy over 2 keV. GaN is however different and presents a pseudometallic behavior resulting in a majority of surviving defects to be single interstitials or vacancies. ▼ Introduction Hearing loss following middle ear surgery is an important issue because it is common, is detrimental to patients, and may be preventable. Patients are often told the risk of inner ear hearing loss following middle ear surgery is low, however, not all publications qualify this loss in the same way, and some use more sensitive indicators than others. Most of these losses are permanent and compound other hearing losses, such as from aging. In addition to hearing, balance is often also affected. This harm caused by surgery is poorly understood, but is likely to be due to a combination of noise- and force-related factors. Strategies to minimise the noise and force trauma of middle ear surgery offer hope to decrease the morbidity of these operations. Aims 1. To review the incidence of postoperative sensorineural hearing loss (POSNHL) locally 2. To examine the significance of this inner ear harm on patients’ quality of life (QoL) 3. To prospectively investigate the effects of middle ear surgery on inner ear hearing and balance function 4. To measure the key forces of middle ear surgery Methodology A retrospective review of sensorineural function in patients undergoing middle ear surgery from 1998 to 2009 in Christchurch was undertaken with a >10 dB at 4 kHz bone conduction marker of POSNHL. The Glasgow Benefit Inventory was sent to all patients identified in the retrospective review who had a complete sensorineural assessment. Patients having middle ear surgery were enrolled in a study to measure extended high frequency (EHF) audiometry, and vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) perioperatively. A miniature sensor was incorporated into modified microscope instruments to measure the forces required for ossicular palpation, prosthesis placement and destructive procedures which may be part of a patient’s surgery, the forces of which are transmitted to the inner ear. Results 834 (36.5%) patients had complete sensorineural function tests perioperatively, and sixty nine (8.3%) sustained a POSNHL. Lower rates were found in revision surgery, higher rates were seen with trainee surgeons. 303 (34.9%) QoL questionnaires were returned and there was a very low correlation between POSNHL and QoL (p=0.09). There was, however, a significant association with air-conduction audiometry and QoL (p<0.0001) and this was echoed in patients’ comments which noted hearing outcome to be the most important predictor of QoL. Fourteen patients had complete EHF audiometry, and five (31.3%) had a POSNHL >10 dB. Only two cases out of sixteen were detected with a 4 kHz POSNHL criterion. VEMP was not useful for noting vestibular harm following surgery. Force measurements were made on six cadaveric temporal bones and nineteen live patients. ▼ Business restructurings within multinational enterprises (MNEs) are regular occurrences. Such restructurings are often carried out in order to increase the MNE‟s competitiveness on the market by making the supply chain and management more efficient in order to ac-quire benefits due to economies of scale. There is a risk that such cross-border business re-structurings will transfer the profit/loss potential that is associated with the assets, risks and/or functions that are transferred, to low-tax jurisdictions in order to minimize the MNEs tax burden. Germany amended its tax act in order to prevent such profit potential from being transferred out of the country. This amendment came into effect on the 1st of January 2008. The OECD, which is the normative body on the international tax arena, re-leased a Discussion Draft for the public in September 2008 with the purpose to highlight the transfer pricing aspects of business restructurings and to serve as an interpretation of the application of the Transfer Pricing Guidelines on business restructurings. In this thesis, the concepts of profit/loss potential and indemnification, as they are pre-sented in the Discussion Draft, will be analyzed. The interpretation of the OECD will then be contrasted with the German and Swedish regulation of these concepts. The OECD defines a business restructuring as a transfer including a bundle of assets, risks and/or functions which are transferred across borders within a MNE. If this transfer in-volves the shift of profit/loss potential it shall be included in the valuation of the transfer price of the transactions. The profit/loss potential shall only be included if it can be identi-fied as belonging to a specific asset, risk or function of the bundle. In Swedish legislation there is only one rule which tax authorities can use in order to adjust the income of related parties. This regulation is not a specific rule for business restructurings as such but a gener-al rule for all transfer pricing matters. Sweden has traditionally followed the OECD guide-lines and the Swedish courts and tax authorities will most likely apply the guidance set out by the OECD on business restructurings as well. Germany views a business restructuring as a transfer package which consist of assets, risks and/or functions which are transferred a cross borders within a MNE. The concept of business opportunities, i.e. the profit potential of the combined assets, risks and/or func-tions of the transfer package, shall be included in the valuation of the transfer package. In the valuation of the transfer package synergy effects for the MNE and location savings as a whole shall be included. This concept deviates from the view of the OECD. The OECD states that only local synergy effects and location savings shall be included in the valuation of the transfer package. The German approach leads to an inherent risk of overvaluation of the transfer package. The way of valuing the transfer package in Germany could lead to taxation without realization, i.e.…

▼ Fatigue can accumulate sufficiently to limit muscular force production during repeated, forceful muscle contractions, including those that occur in the occupational, clinical and athletic settings. Fatigue during such efforts is likely to result from disturbances to multiple processes in the nervous system and muscle. However, previous research examining the mechanisms underpinning fatigue have typically required subjects to perform low-level constant-force contractions or to repeat maximal efforts in a single set format. Such tasks do not translate well to occupational, daily living or athletic situations where high-intensity, yet submaximal, repeated efforts may be performed in work bouts (or sets) with brief rest periods for recovery. Therefore, the overall aim of the present research was to investigate the neuromuscular mechanisms contributing to force loss after repeated, high-intensity muscular efforts with longer (90 s) periods of rest separating repetitions into sets of contractions. In Experiment 1, 16 resistance trained men performed 6 sets of unilateral isometric plantar flexor contractions of the right leg (3 s contraction/2 s rest) reaching a target level of 85% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Sets were separated by a 90-s inter-set rest and completed to failure (i.e. In Experiment 1, a significant reduction in maximum voluntary isometric plantar flexion torque (12.2%; p < 0.001) was observed post-exercise, which did not recover by POST-20. Significant reductions in triceps surae EMG/M (-6%; p = 0.024) and MEP/M amplitude (9%; p = 0.01) were found post-exercise but recovered by POST-10. Cortical silent period (an indicator of GABAB-mediated intracortical inhibition) was reduced (-4%; p = 0.016) post-exercise and did not recover by POST-20. In Experiment 2, temporal changes in torque were similar to Experiment 1. Significant reductions in the evoked torque response from 20 Hz (p < 0.001), 80 Hz (p < 0.001) and VFT (p < 0.001) stimulations were observed at POST and did not recover by POST-20, however no changes in 20:80 and 20:VFT ratios were observed. Finally, significant reductions in both Tvib (-13%; p = 0.035) and Tsust (-25%; p = 0.035) were found post-exercise but recovered by POST-10. The ingestion of caffeine allowed for a greater overall torque production and neural drive (EMG/M) but the lack of condition  time interaction effect indicated that it did not clearly affect the time course of fatigue or recovery. Further, no detectable effects were observed compared to the non-caffeine condition in corticospinal excitability, MN excitability or E-C coupling, as shown by the negligible changes in MEP/M amplitude, PIC facilitation, and torque during 20-Hz, 80-Hz and VFT stimulations. These data suggest that corticospinal tract efficiency and PIC-mediated facilitation of the MN pool can be compromised and are likely to account in part for the force loss immediately following an acute bout of repeated, high-intensity muscular efforts performed in sets (with 90 s rest). Trois types de dommages non encore survenus, dont la distinction repose sur la probabilité d'occurrence, peuvent être identifiés : le dommage futur, le dommage possible et le dommage hypothétique. Le droit de la responsabilité extracontractuelle ne comporte pas de dispositions relatives au traitement de ces types de dommage. Ce sont les magistrats qui ont, de toute pièce, construit le traitement du dommage non encore survenu, à partir des textes existants. Eu égard à sa source, celui-ci demeure tantôt nébuleux tantôt incohérent. C'est pourquoi, il convient de remettre de l'ordre. Plus qu'un traitement, ce sont en réalité trois traitements que nous avons pu recenser et qui sont appelés à varier selon le type de dommage non encore survenu auquel la victime est exposée. Tandis que le premier traitement réside dans la prévention du dommage non encore survenu, le deuxième consiste, quant à lui, en la réparation des préjudices actuels résultant de l'exposition à un dommage non encore survenu. Le troisième et dernier traitement réside dans la réparation ou dans l'évaluation anticipée de la réparation des préjudices finaux qui pourraient résulter d'un dommage non encore advenu. Des variations de régime illustrent, en outre, la différence de probabilité d'occurrence du dommage entre le dommage futur, le dommage possible et le dommage hypothétique pour chacun de ces traitements.

Three types of loss or damage can be identified according to the probability of such loss or damage occurring: future loss or damage, possible loss or damage and hypothetical loss or damage. Extracontractual liability does not include any provisions relating to the treatment of this type of loss or damage. It is the judges who have determined how to treat loss or damage that has not yet occurred, based on existing law. As a result, treatment remains nebulous at best and incoherent at worst which is why the question needs to be addressed. Rather than one type of treatment, we have identified three types of treatment that vary according to the type of loss or damage that has not yet occurred. Unlike the first treatment is based on the prevention of the loss or damage that has not yet occurred, the second type of treatment consist of compensation for actual loss or damage resulting from exposure to loss or damage that has not yet occurred. The last type of treatment is based on compensation or anticipated evaluation of final loss or damage as the result of the loss or damage that has not yet occurred. Variations in the treatment applied also illustrate the difference in the probability of occurrence between future loss or damage, possible loss or damage and hypothetical loss or damage.

INTRODUÇÃO: A Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida é causada pelo vírus da imunodeficiência humana, um retrovírus específico que afeta o sistema imunológico, propiciando a ocorrência de diversas infecções oportunistas e podendo afetar também o sistema nervoso auditivo central. OBJETIVO: Avaliar as vias periférica e central do sistema auditivo em indivíduos adultos com HIV/AIDS. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 25 indivíduos com HIV/AIDS e 25 indivíduos do grupo controle, sendo estes submetidos à avaliação audiológica convencional, audiometria em altas frequências, emissões otoacústicas por transiente, supressão das emissões otoacústicas, potenciais evocados auditivos de tronco encefálico, média latência e Potencial Cognitivo (P300). RESULTADOS: O grupo estudo apresentou alterações em todas as avaliações realizadas, enquanto que o grupo controle apresentou alterações na audiometria em altas frequências, supressão das emissões otoacústicas, potencial evocado auditivo de média latência e P300. A comparação dos resultados normais e alterados obtidos entre os grupos apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante para a audiometria tonal convencional, audiometria em altas frequências, timpanometria, pesquisa dos reflexos acústicos, emissões otoacústicas, supressão das emissões otoacústicas e potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico, sendo também possível observar uma tendência à diferença estatisticamente significante no P300. Com relação aos tipos de alteração, o grupo estudo apresentou maior ocorrência de perda auditiva neurossensorial na avaliação audiológica convencional, alterações sugestivas de comprometimento de orelha média e tronco encefálico concomitantemente no potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico, alteração do tipo ambas (efeito eletrodo e efeito orelha ocorrendo concomitantemente) no potencial evocado auditivo de média latência e alterações por aumento de latência no P300. Com relação à análise quantitativa pode-se verificar que na comparação dos resultados obtidos entre os grupos houveram diferenças estatisticamente significantes para todos os limiares obtidos na audiometria tonal convencional, bem como na audiometria em altas frequências; no potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico para a latência das ondas I, III, V, e interpicos I-V e III-V; no potencial evocado auditivo de média latência para a latência da onda Pa nas modalidades C4-A1 e C4-A2 e no P300 para a latência dessa onda. CONCLUSÃO: Indivíduos com HIV/AIDS apresentam alterações na avaliação audiológica convencional, audiometria em altas frequências, emissões otoacústicas, supressão das emissões otoacústicas e nos potenciais evocados auditivos, sugerindo comprometimento tanto da via auditiva periférica como da via auditiva central.

▼ The corrosion behaviour of cast Al-Mg alloy A535 and its composites containing 10 wt.% and 15 wt.% fly ash, and 10 wt.% hybrid reinforcement (5 wt.% fly ash + 5 wt.% SiC) was investigated using weight-loss and electrochemical corrosion tests, optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The tests were conducted in fresh water collected from the South Saskatchewan River and 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at room temperature. The pH of the salt solution varied from 3 to 9. For comparison, two other aluminum alloys, AA2618 and AA5083-H116, were tested in the same electrolytes. The results of the weight-loss corrosion test showed that unreinforced A535 alloy had a lower corrosion rate in fresh water and seawater environments than the composites at all the tested pH values. The corrosion rate of the composites increased with increasing fly ash content. As expected, the corrosion rates of A535 alloy and the composites tested in fresh water were lower than those in salt solution. The results of the potentiodynamic and cyclic polarization electrochemical tests showed that the corrosion potential (Ecorr) and pitting potential (Epit) of the alloy were more positive than those of the composites. The corrosion and pitting potentials of the composites became more negative (active) with increasing fly ash content. The composites showed more positive (noble) repassivation or protection potential (Erp) than the matrix alloy, with the positivity increasing with fly ash content. Analysis of the electrochemical noise data showed that pitting corrosion was the dominant mode of corrosion for the alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Optical microscopy and SEM revealed that Mg2Si phase and Al-Mg intermetallics corroded preferentially to the matrix. The EDS data indicated that the protective oxide film formed on A535 contained Al2O3 and MgO. ▼ Proportional loss models commonly used in disease surveys are based on the assumption that per cent yield loss is the same in all crops, regardless of their yield potential. Estimates of regional crop loss may be inaccurate if the relationship between disease and yield loss is affected by crop yield potential. The importance of crop yield potential in disease: yield loss modelling was investigated and models for more accurate regional crop loss estimates were developed, taking crop yield potential into account. Two spring sown barley (cv. Triumph) experiments were conducted in 1987/88 and 1988/89 in Canterbury, New Zealand, to study the effect of crop yield potential on the relationship between disease and yield loss. Crop yield potentials of 323 to 806gDM/m² were generated in seven crops by varying nitrogen and water inputs, sowing date (mid-spring and early-summer) and season. Leaf rust (Puccinia hordei Otth) epidemics of different severity were generated by applying fungicides at different times, frequencies and rates to control the natural epidemics. Disease was measured as per cent disease severity (%DS), green leaf area, radiation interception and near-infrared radiation (NIR) reflectance from crop canopies. Yield was measured as total and grain dry weight. Epidemics were severe in the fully diseased plots from GS 34 and 46 to maturity in the late and early sown crops respectively. Disease reduced grain yield by 50 to 63% in 1987/88 and 24 to 38% in 1988/89 in the fully diseased plots. Disease: yield loss models were derived by regression analysis for each crop in 1987/88. Single point, multiple point and area under curve models were derived from %DS and GLAI variables, and proportional (%) and actual (gDM/m²) grain yield. The effect of yield potential was determined by comparing regression equation coefficients for each crop with crop yield potential. An area under green leaf area index curve (AUGLAIC): actual yield model was best suited to determining the effect of yield potential on yield loss. This model was selected because AUGLAIC summarised the effect of disease on plant growth over the season and actual yield represented the crop yield potential in the absence of disease and the response of actual yield to disease. Crop yield potential did not affect actual yield loss caused by leaf rust. Disease measured as AUGLAIC explained most of the variation in yield (R²adj=0.93) for all crops in both years. Assessment of GLAI is not suitable for estimation of regional crop loss because of the requirement for a rapid and low cost method. Reflectance of NIR from the crop canopy was investigated as an alternative to GLAI measurements. Reflectance was correlated significantly (P<0.001) with GLAI (r=0.66 to 0.89) and green area index (r=0.76 to 0.92). Reflectance measured at grain-filling (GS 85-87) explained most (R²adj=0.94) of the variation in yield for all crops in both years. ▼ Ventilation events are the result of masses of air being transported from the water surface along the hull, through the propeller plane. Previous research in literature has shown that ventilation induces large and sudden variations of the load on the propeller. The response of the propulsion system had not been documented before. This is a problem with practical and theoretical relevance as both operators and designers of ships and propulsion systems cannot predict the response of these systems to these significant and sudden variations of the propeller-load. The problem can manifest itself in different ways. A first example lies in a possible loss of propulsion and the damages that could incur. A second example lies in the possible installation of too much engine power to respond to unpredictable load-variations such as those incurred by ventilation events. Increased understanding of the relation between wave properties, -height and -frequency, and the response of a marine Diesel engine, -speed and -torque, subjected to wave-induced ventilation, is the goal of this thesis and leads to the main research question: How does a marine Diesel engine respond to off-design loads, and in particular to frequently varying loads resulting from propeller ventilation? It focuses on the response of the prime-mover to variations of the propeller-load imposed by ventilation events. The scope of this thesis covers a monohull coaster with a medium-speed marine Diesel engine moving forward in head seas. A model is proposed based on the description of immersion by Journée and Massie (2001) [19]. It consists of three sub-models that describe vessel-motion, the propeller and the prime-mover. The vessel-motion is described with a combination of potential-flow based methods and viscous theory. A quasi-static approach is proposed to describe the influence of ventilation on propeller-functioning. The prime-mover is modelled with a closed-cylinder process and an idealised first-order turbo-charger model that applies the exhaust-flow temperature of the closed-cylinder process to describe the charge-pressure. Three limits to this model lie in the application of vessel-motion data in a limited, positive domain, the application of 1st quadrant propeller data and the propeller envelope. This model uses input consisting of waves and the engine speed setpoint. The output consists of the rotational speed and produced torque of the prime-mover subjected to ventilation. Verification showed responses comparable to, and in the range and time frame of experimental results by Koushan (2007) [21]. Validation efforts lie beyond the scope of this thesis. Experiments by means of simulations have been performed for two engine speed setpoints and different wave-types describing head seas: Regular waves characterised by low frequencies, -characterised by high frequencies and -characterised by different wave amplitudes. L'accord entre les valeurs calculées et mesurées est, par contre, significativement moins bon qu'entre celles calculées pour le système 3D et les données mesurées. Est-ce que l'hydrogène adsorbé sur le palladium existe sous la forme d'une molécule diatomique faiblement lié? Cette thèse a fourni certains éléments de réponse à cette question, qui reste cependant encore ouverte.

The work carried out during this thesis focuses on the quantum dynamics of the diffusion of hydrogen atoms on a surface of palladium (111). The study of the 3D system allowed us to detail the infrared spectrum of H/Pd (111), showing the existence of different adsorption sites on which localized states exist that are strongly coupled (Fermi resonance). This phenomenon governs the diffusion of hydrogen atoms in an ultra-fast time scale (fs).The study of the (6D) H2/Pd(111) system has shown that the transitions observed are in fact transition bands between several quasi-degenerate adsorption states. The agreement between the calculated and measured values is significantly less good than that between the data calculated for the 3D system and the measured data. Does adsorbed hydrogen on palladium exist in the form of a weakly bound H2 molecule? This thesis has provided some answers to this question, which remains open, hovewer, to some extent.

▼ During the period of October 1974 to August 1976, a study was conducted to measure the effects of surface soil removal on plant production, plant transpiration rates, nitrate nitrogen mineralization rates, and selected hydrologic parameters (infiltration rates, potential sediment production, and chemical quality of runoff water). The treatments were incremental 7.6 centimeter soil layers to a depth of 30.5 centimeters. Plant production and transpiration ratios (or water use efficiencies) were measured in greenhouse studies using Agrogyron desertorum grown in the incremental 7.6 centimeter soil layers from five study sites throughout the state of Utah, (Blanding, Brush Creek, Milford, Huntington, and Dove Creek). Significant decreases in plant production and increases in transpiration ratios were measured for all sites at incremental depths beyond 7.6 centimeters. These changes in plant production and transpiration ratios were found to be linearly related to the nitrate nitrogen content of the soils as determined at the time the soils were collected for use in the greenhouse. Nitrogen mineralization rates for a 6 week period were measured under field conditions at Milford and Blanding for each of the 7.6 centimeter incremental soil layers. Nitrate nitrogen mineralization was linearly correlated to the organic carbon content of the soil. Decreased mineralization rates as measured in the field at both study sites were reflected in significant increases in plant water requirements and also decreases in production as measured in greenhouse studies. Hydrologic parameters were measured at each 7.6 centimeter incremental soil depth using a Rocky Mountain infiltrometer. With one exception, significant differences in infiltration capacities among treatment depths did not occur during either 1975 or 1976 at either the Blanding or Milford site. At the Blanding site a significant decrease in the infiltration capacity occurred beyond the 22.9 centimeter depth due to a hardpan development. A significant change in infiltration capacities was noted between the 1975 and 1976 field seasons as pooled over both treatment depths and study sites. There were no significant differences in potential sediment production between sites or among treatment depths within a site. In terms of runoff water quality, a significant change in phosphorus was observed only at the Blanding site between the 1975 and 1976 field seasons. ▼ The continuous Complementary Metal-Oxide-Silicon (CMOS) technology scaling is the driving force for lower cost, lower power, and higher data rate consumer electronics. However, with today?s nano-scale transistors, addressing the applications at the upper millimeter-wave and terahertz region are still challenging. In addition, the power performance is greatly limited by the ever decreasing breakdown voltage. This dissertation presents and demonstrates the concepts of using diodes built in CMOS without any process modifications to increase the circuit operating frequency and power handling capability beyond that limited by the transistors. Shallow trench isolated (STI) Schottky barrier diodes (SBD?s) fabricated in CMOS with cut-off frequency (fco) well over 1 THz have been previously demonstrated. By eliminating the n-well region below a Schottky contact surrounded by an STI ring, a polysilicon gate separated (PGS) SBD achieves higher fco and scales better with technology compared with a STI SBD. The measured fco of PGS SBD is improved from the previously reported value of 1.5 to ~2 THz by using an optimum layout in the UMC 130-nm logic CMOS process. A low leakage PGS SBD having a p+-n guard ring with fco of 1.5 THz is reported for the first time. Besides these, the measured reverse breakdown voltages of p-n diodes and SBD?s in the 130-nm logic CMOS process are higher than 11 V, which is ~3-4X that of MOS transistors. Therefore, it is possible to use these diodes to open up millimeter-wave and even terahertz region for low cost high volume applications. The utility of SBD?s for implementing millimeter-wave circuits is demonstrated by characterizing a varistor-mode and a varactor-mode frequency doubler fabricated in the 130-nm logic CMOS process. The varistor mode and varactor mode frequency doublers exhibit 14-dB conversion loss (CL) at 132-GHz and 10-dB CL at 125-GHz output frequency, respectively. These performances are comparable to that of the doubler fabricated in the SiGe BiCMOS process. With the CMOS Schottky barrier diodes, it should be possible to implement frequency doublers operating above 200 GHz. Using a shunt p-n diode and shunt NMOS transistors in the 130-nm CMOS technology, a single-pole-double-throw transmit/receive (T/R) switch operating at 57~66 GHz frequency band has been successfully demonstrated. The switch exhibits insertion loss of ~2 and 3 dB for TX and RX mode at 60 GHz, respectively. Measured input 1-dB compression point is limited by the measurement setup and higher than 18 dBm. Isolation is ~20 dB at 60 GHz. This suggests that it is possible to use a p-n diode in foundry CMOS like a PIN diode in millimeter-wave switches to improve their power handling capability with small impact to insertion loss. Lastly, the use of MOS varactor diodes in frequency multiplication for generating 62-GHz LO signal for a 77-GHz radar system is suggested through a simulation study.
