▼ Recent findings have suggested that the type of postural control seems to change, with certain conditions promoting a more conscious control and others, a more automatic control. It has been proposed that by withdrawing attention from postural control, external focus and cognitive task conditions allow automatic mechanisms to control sway more efficiently. The present dissertation aimed to investigate whether two types of postural control exist and to provide evidence for these two types of postural control in healthy young and older adults. In experiment 1, the effect of attentional focus and cognitive tasks was examined in healthy older adults. It was found that the cognitive task yielded improvements in stability compared to focus conditions, which highlighted the fact that automaticity is possible in this group. In experiment 2, the effect of attentional focus and cognitive tasks was once again observed in older adults, this time by including electromyographic recordings of lower leg muscles to examine if changes were due to stiffening. Although improvements were observed in external focus and cognitive task conditions compared to baseline and internal focus, no change occurred in muscle activity which lends further support to the idea that changes are due to automaticity. Finally, dynamic measures of sway were used to help interpret the changes that occurred in attentional focus and cognitive task conditions in both young and older adults. The wavelet transform revealed a change in sensory contributions to postural control in cognitive task conditions. There was a shift to increased contributions from the cerebellum and the vestibular system, and a decrease in visual contributions, compared to other conditions. Sample entropy revealed changes in complexity of sway, with cognitive tasks presenting more complex, irregular and efficient sway in both groups compared to baseline standing and attentional focus conditions. Finally, the rambling-trembling decomposition highlighted increases in the spinal reflex contributions to sway in external focus and difficult cognitive task conditions in young adults, while no change occurred in older adults. Results of these experiments provide the evidence of two types of postural control; a more automatic type in cognitive task conditions and a more conscious type in baseline and internal focus conditions. The external focus elicited some changes that could have indicated automaticity, but clear differences were still present between this condition and the cognitive tasks, which suggest automaticity of sway should be viewed as a continuum.

▼ Poor seated
postural control negatively impacts the performance of daily activities in non-ambulatory persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) and may be a potential target of rehabilitation. However, there is a lack of validated clinical measures of seated
postural control in persons with MS, thus limiting evaluation of rehabilitation treatments. The purpose of this study is to determine 1) if non-ambulatory persons with MS have impaired seated
postural control compared to healthy age and gender match controls and 2) whether the Function in Sitting Test (FIST) is a valid measure of a seated
postural control in non-ambulatory PwMS. Thirty-four participants (17 with MS and 17 controls) participated in seated
postural assessments. Sitting balance was evaluated using posturography and the FIST. The seated posturography assessment involved participants sitting on a force platform without support for 30s. The center of pressure was determined based on the output of the force platform and the amount of seated
postural sway was calculated. The FIST is a 14-Item clinical functional assessment of sitting balance validated in adults with acute stroke. The MS group’s (157 〖mm〗
2)
postural sway was significantly greater than the
control group (35〖mm〗
2) (U= 48, p=0.001). There was a significant, negative correlation between FIST and
postural sway (rho=-0.487, p=0.028). The observations provide evidence that PwMS have poor seated
postural control when compared to age and gender matched controls; and FIST may be a valid tool to assess seated
postural control in non-ambulatory PwMS.

Introdução: O AVC é a interrupção súbita do fluxo sanguíneo cerebral.
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Stroke is the sudden interruption of cerebral blood flow. The main changes generated by the stroke are changes in motor function as tone disorders, presence of associated reactions and loss of postural control mechanism. After stroke physical therapy is important as it promotes the re-education of uncoordinated movements and postural balance. Objective: To conduct a literature review of the main physical therapy treatments for balance in post stroke patients. Methodology: A search on Medline database was conducted with the keywords: Stroke, postural balance, "postural control," postural stability and physiotherapy. Our search included articles published between 1st January 2010 and 31st March 2015, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, of randomized clinical trials that studied balance training programs for patients of both genders, aged 30 to 80 years, who have suffered stroke. Results: 20 articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria. Different physiotherapy treatment protocols for balance were identified: intensive training engine; riding simulation; workout on treadmill; active games; weight transfer training on an unstable surface; training with visual restriction and unstable base of dual task of training; Functional electrical stimulation; postural control…

Objective: Translate and adapt the scale to Portuguese population “Trunck Impairment Scale” in post-stroke patients, and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the same.

control postural, mostrando resultados no concluyentes.

▼ Low back pain (LBP) affects many individuals worldwide. The established association between LBP and spine motor control has led to the development of many control assessment techniques. To understand the association between motor control and LBP, it is essential to understand the relationship between separate assessment techniques. Systems identification (SI) and local dynamic stability (LDS) are two methods commonly used to quantify spine control. SI provides a detailed description of control but uses linear assumptions, whereas LDS provides a “black box” non-linear assessment and can be quantified during dynamic movements. Although both SI and LDS techniques aim to measure the control of the spine, each employs different experimental setups and data processing strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to compare the motor behaviour outcomes of SI and LDS quantification techniques. To do this, 15 participants completed two tasks (SI and LDS) in a random order. For the SI task, participants were seated and ventrally perturbed at the level of the 10th thoracic vertebrae (T10). They completed this task under instructions to resist the perturbations (resist condition) or relax and remain upright (relax condition). Admittance was represented using frequency response functions, and a validated neuromuscular control model quantified lumbar stiffness, damping and muscle spindle feedback gains. The LDS task involved participants completing three repetitive movement blocks consisting of flexion/extension, axial rotation, and complex movements. In each block, the maximum finite-time Lyapunov exponent (λmax) was estimated. A stepwise linear regression determined that λmax during the rotation task was best predicted by SI outcomes in the relax condition (adjusted R square = 0.65). Many conditions demonstrated no significant relationship between λmax and SI outcomes. These findings outline the importance of a consistent framework for the assessment of spine control. This could improve clinical assessment efficiency as well as the understanding of the association between LBP and motor control.

▼ Research investigating the effects of blast on the brain has attempted to elucidate the degree to which low-level blasts can exert an impact on functioning. Military personnel who routinely utilize explosive ordnance to gain access to secured spaces (explosive breachers) are repeatedly exposed to blast overpressure, yet current training protocols are not known to result in diagnosable injury. Survey results from this population have established a symptom profile similar to that observed in post-concussive syndrome including difficulties with headache, sleep, and other complaints, with exacerbated symptom reporting positively associated with increased career breaching exposure and heavy weapons experience. Individuals with diagnosed concussions (with and without persistent headache), have also been shown to have deficits in their
postural control, raising the question if such
postural deficits are present in those exposed to low-level blasts. We examined headache report and
postural control assessed daily in male military personnel across two-week explosive breacher training. Approximate entropy, a non-linear dynamic statistic used to quantify the regularity of time series data, was used to assess center of pressure motion during different
postural tasks. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed increased headache report on two days following two consecutive training blast exposures; however, these increases were not associated with deficits in
postural control. Symptom and behavioral effects associated with acute exposure to low-level blast may be relatively small, accruing incrementally over time and repeated exposures. Assessments of effortful
control of balance may be more sensitive to blast effects (in an undiagnosed population) than more passive assessments of
postural control.

▼ Human
postural stance is inherently unstable and is a complex task involving the coordination and
control of redundant degrees of freedom at each level of analysis (e.g., limbs, joints, muscles, etc.). In numerous investigations of the
postural control system, it has been found that, the coordination and
control of posture and balance is simplified by employing different strategies for
postural stability. For example, strategies may utilize the ankle joint alone (i.e., inverted pendulum model), ankle-hip coordination (i.e., double inverted pendulum model) or multi-joint synergy (i.e., multi-linkage model). Even though the
postural control mechanism has been comprehensively documented by investigations of EMG, kinematic and kinetic data, there are limited data on the investigation of the inter- and intra-foot coordination dynamics in quiet stance.
The primary focus of this dissertation is on the center of pressure (COP) foot coupling under the varying mechanical and task constraints induced by different stances. We investigated: 1) how foot position and asymmetrical body weight distribution interact to influence
postural control and inter-foot coordination; 2) the effect of foot position and orientation on the body weight distribution and the foot coordination dynamics of standing postures; and 3) the influence of a shortened support surface together with its orientation on the COP coordination in quiet stance.
Three experiments were conducted that manipulated foot position, foot orientation and the base of support properties in quiet standing. The following conclusions have been reached from the analyses of the individual foot COPs and the coupling between COPs: 1) The time evolutionary properties of the inter-foot coordination dynamics revealed patterns of “stable” but “flexible”
control of the
postural system as a function of foot position and orientation. In particular, the staggered stance represents a “hybrid” blend of the properties of the side-by-side and tandem foot position in both linear and nonlinear analyses. 2) Foot position played a more important role than its orientation in channeling the inter- and intra-foot coordination dynamics. When the
postural stance was challenged by the limitation of the base of support (side-by-side and tandem stances), the COPs in the unstable plane (inter-foot coordination) were predominantly involved in
postural control. In contrast, when standing posture was not challenged by the support boundary (staggered stance), the COPs of the more loaded foot (intra-foot coordination) dominated
postural stability. 3) When the shortened base of support was oriented along the horizontal axis, the four COP time series revealed a parallel contribution indicating an inter-dependence of the inter- and intra-foot coordination. When the shortened support area was positioned along the longitudinal axis, the COPs in the sagittal plane (inter-foot coordination) displayed a more significant contribution to
postural stability.
Multistability exists at different levels of the…

▼ This thesis presents three complementary experiments that aim to investigate the sensorimotor recalibration of vestibular reafference for platform perturbation recovery responses. Previous work has demonstrated that visual feedback is used to recalibrate the vestibular reafference used to
control vestibulo-ocular reflexes as well as navigation. However, less work has examined the visual calibration of vestibular feedback for
postural control. During a platform perturbation, vestibular feedback is thought to have very little contribution to the initial components of recovery responses and is largely involved in re-establishing
postural equilibrium following recovery responses. In experiment I, we investigated whether vision could be used to alter how vestibular reafference was used for re-establishing equilibrium following a perturbation. We were able to show that after changing the vertical interpretation of a GVS- altered vestibular signal using visual references, participants became realigned toward the cathode following GVS removal, suggesting recalibration of the vestibular signal. Interestingly, vision was unable to alter the vestibular influence on initial perturbation responses. Previous work has shown that multiple trial exposures may be necessary to demonstrate recalibration. Therefore, experiment II examined whether visual feedback provided during a platform perturbation could recalibrate the contribution of vestibular reafference to early components of the recovery response. We demonstrated that vestibular contributions to early components of perturbation responses could be recalibrated but that the recalibration observed was likely mediated by somatosensory feedback rather than vision. Sensory integration work has shown the importance of attending to the sensory feedback provided for improving
postural control. In experiment III, we aimed to determine whether instructions to specifically attend to somatosensory feedback for realigning posture during multiple platform perturbations could improve the recalibration of vestibular reafference on initial perturbation responses. Participants did not show improvements in their ability to recalibrate vestibular feedback during perturbation responses with added instructions to attend to somatosensory feedback. This may result from the fact that our
postural control task did not merit the allocation of additional attention resources in our young healthy population. Together, our data show a task dependent recalibration of vestibular reafference for
postural control. The following experiments provide further understanding into the integration of visual and vestibular feedback for
postural control and how a change or decline in sensory feedback might be compensated for. This work may provide merit for rehabilitation strategies to take advantage of using intact or reliable sensory feedback to recalibrate sensory feedback that had been altered or declined, as is often the case for clinical and older adult populations.

▼ This dissertation examined, for the first time, differences between young and elderly volunteers in cortical representations of human posture
control during (1) quiet stance with normal and altered sensory stimulation, (2) biomechanical perturbations, and (3) dual tasking. The primary focus of the first part was to monitor changes in cortical activity when unexpectedly altering the sensory conditions of upright stance, such as switching from stable (eyes open, fixed support surface) to less-stable (eyes closed, sway-referenced support surface) conditions (experiment 1). Our results demonstrate increased cortical activations in delta (0.2-4Hz) and gamma (30-50 Hz) oscillations, primarily over central-frontal, central and central parietal cortices during challenging
postural conditions. While increased delta rhythms were observed in both groups during challenging sensory conditions, elderly individuals also showed increased gamma band activity over sensorimotor and parietal cortices, when compared to the younger group. Correlation analyses also suggest that increased cerebral activity became more relevant to the
control of Center of Mass dynamics when upright stance was threatened, especially in the elderly group. The second part studied compensatory
postural responses to unexpected perturbations while simultaneously recording Electroencephalography, Electromyography, and Center of Mass dynamics (experiment 2). Our results also suggest that, rather than motor system malfunctioning, impairments in perceptual processing of sensory afferences forms the basis of prolonged
postural responses to perturbed stance conditions in non-faller older adults. In general, our results are not only consistent with previous reports suggesting involvement of cerebral cortices in human upright stance
control, but also extend them by showing ageing related cortical activity modulations during challenging
postural tasks.
The third part focused on performance changes in posture
control-cognition dual tasking as well as cortical representations of these performance changes both in cognitive and posture
control tasks (experiment 3).
Postural and cognitive data analyses showed that elderly people had no performance deficits during single
postural task conditions, but decreased cognitive performance even during challenging single cognitive tasks. Dual tasking analyses indicated that working memory impairments in the elderly group can be observed when a challenging cognitive task is performed in any
postural condition, while
postural control performance differences only became significant during dual tasking with challenging
postural and cognitive task conditions. EEG analyses showed increased delta, theta and gamma oscillations, primarily over frontal, central-frontal, central and central-parietal cortices during challenging dual tasking conditions. While delta oscillations are more responsive to challenging
postural conditions, theta rhythms are found to be changing as a function of cognitive task difficulty in both groups, with more pronounced…

▼ People frequently perform daily activities that involve multitasking. For example, we maintain posture while holding a cup of coffee or a cell phone. It is not uncommon to experience a perturbation during such a task performance. In this dissertation, we study
control of vertical posture in the presence of
postural instability and holding an object in one hand. Successful completion of these tasks depends on efficient interaction of two components of the task: maintenance of vertical posture (
postural component) and stabilization of the object (focal component). While each component was studied extensively in the past, investigating the interaction between the
postural and focal components received much lesser attention in the prior literature. As such, a series of studies were conducted in order to examine the interplay between the
postural and focal components.
In the first study (chapter 3), we investigated the effect of
postural asymmetry induced by performing a secondary motor task on
control of vertical posture. Participants (N=9) were asked to stand on the force platform and hold an object in one hand that induced body asymmetry. In addition, the subjects stood with feet apart and feet together (narrow base of support) and were subjected to perturbationa applied to their shoulders. In this study and following studies the side of holding an object will be referred as a target side and the other side of body will be referred as a contralateral side. Reciprocal activation of muscles on the target side and co-contraction of muscles on the contralateral side were seen when standing in asymmetrical stance and being subjected to external perturbation. Decreased magnitudes of muscle activation were seen in the APA phase while standing with narrow base of support.
In the second study (chapter 4), we investigated motor
control perspectives of coordinating maintenance of posture and application of grip force when holding an object and being perturbed. In this study, participants (N=10) were asked to stand on the force platform holding an instrumented cup while being perturbed at the shoulders. Gripping task demands were manipulated by positioning a slippery cap on top of the cup. Onsets of grip force were seen before the onsets of the center of pressure (COP) displacement and initiation of the movements of the cup during the anticipatory
postural adjustments (APAs) phase of
postural control, while the onsets of maximum grip force preceded the maximum COP displacement. When the task demands increased by holding an instrumented cup with the slippery cap, participants tended to generate grip force earlier and of a smaller magnitude. Moreover, the COP displacement in the APA phase when holding the cup with the slippery cap was smaller as compared to the holding the cup only.
In the third study (chapter 5), we studied APAs and CPAs people use to maintain balance while standing on a sliding board that was either unlocked (and as such unstable) or locked (and as such stable) and performing voluntary arm movements. Nine…

▼ This thesis primarily focuses on studying the effects of dual tasks on the
postural control in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The study tries to answer the following questions: Is there any difference in
postural control between individuals with MCI and older adults? Will there be any difference in performance of a secondary task in individuals with MCI to that of older adults without impaired cognition? Will the dual task effect the
postural control in the individuals with MCI? Will the complexity of the dual task affect
postural control in individuals with MCI to a larger degree compared to healthy older adults?
The first chapter of the thesis provides information about the present statistics on population at falls risk. It then provides information about Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and describes the neuropathology basis of MCI as what changes occurs within the MCI and its progression. The chapter also introduces information related to the importance of study of
postural balance in MCI and older adults and describes the previous research methods to study
postural control. Than a statement of aims of the study is provided. Then information is provided about how participants were chosen for the study, the inclusion and exclusion criteria, IRB (International Review Board) approval obtained for the study, and the clinical assessment measures performed within the study to provide descriptive information about the study participants.
The second chapter describes the results of the study of the effect of a cognitive task and light finger touch on standing balance in healthy adults. As previous studies have reported the individual effects of cognitive task and light finger touch, this study is the first to determine the concurrent effect of the cognitive task and finger touch on static balance in young healthy adults. This study involving healthy individuals provides a foundation for the study of the effect of a cognitive task and finger touch in balance
control of older adults and individuals with cognitive impairment.
The third chapter includes 3 studies investigating dual task effect on static and dynamic balance in individuals with MCI as compared to healthy older adults. Part 1 of the third chapter is in line with the second chapter involving investigation of the concurrent effect of cognitive task and light finger touch on standing balance in the individuals with MCI as compared to older adults. Part 2 of the third chapter focuses on the study of the effect of manual and cognitive secondary task on spatio-temporal gait variables in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment. Gait variables reported were gait velocity, cadence, step length and stride length that provides definite measures of gait cycle. Part 3 is devoted to the study of the effect of dual task on performance of clinical test of mobility and balance. In particular, we investigated how individuals with MCI perform Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in 3 experimental conditions involving concurrent secondary task performance. The TUG…

▼ Safe and independent mobility is a primary rehabilitation goal for those with stroke, of which balance
control is a key determinant. The risk of falls post-stroke is high and fall rates rise dramatically soon after discharge from the hospital. Previous research has revealed the essential role that reactive balance
control, specifically the capacity to initiate and execute a rapid step, has in preventing falls. Of concern, reactive balance
control is not routinely assessed within physical therapy practice. Challenges to clinical assessment may include a lack of available methods that are safe, standardized and able to quantify and characterize balance responses. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to advance understanding of reactive stepping after stroke to inform and guide clinical assessment practices. The present findings affirmed that reactive stepping post-stroke is a significant problem not clearly revealed by commonly-used clinical measures that focus on voluntary
control, thereby, supporting the need to develop targeted assessments of reactive balance
control. Further, the findings revealed the potential for clinical uptake of alternate approaches, specifically the lean-and-release method, to assess reactive stepping among those in early stages of stroke rehabilitation. When paired with kinetic measurement technology, such approaches were able to quantify and reveal determinants of temporal dyscontrol of both the paretic and nonparetic lower-limbs, known to be associated with falls after stroke. Further work is warranted to evolve the lean-and-release assessment towards a more useful clinical tool, suitable for widespread clinical uptake.

▼ Background: Preschool age children born very preterm, <30 weeks’ gestation, that do not have a major neurological condition such as cerebral palsy may present with motor impairments and reduced postural control compared with children born at term. Preschool age is an important time in child development, where there is greater complexity in children’s motor skill in which postural control is fundamental in contributing to stability and execution of movement. Persisting or emerging motor delay may become evident at preschool age and may affect the child’s performance which can have an impact on successful transitioning to school. There is little known on motor performance and postural control in very preterm children compared with term children at preschool age.
Objectives: This thesis explored the motor performance and postural control of very children born <30 weeks’ gestational age at 4-5 years. The aims were as follows:
• To review the literature on motor performance and postural control in preterm preschool age children, including a review of assessment tools relating to motor outcome and postural control.
• To compare motor performance and postural control in very preterm and term children aged 4-5 years.
• To determine the relationship between children’s level of motor performance and their postural control at age 4-5 years.
Methods: A cohort of 105 very preterm preschool age children and a control group of 40 term-born children at 4-5 years of age were assessed on two motor outcome assessments and an assessment of postural control, the Wii Balance Board that has not been previously used in the paediatric population.
Results: Overall very preterm children showed poorer motor performance compared with term children. A greater proportion of VPT children compared with term children had motor impairment when assessed with the NSMDA and the MABC-2. Very preterm children had reduced postural control compared with their term peers. They demonstrated greater postural sway in balance tasks that had various sensory conditions, dual tasking as well as static balance tasks. Reduced functional performance was also observed in VPT children in dynamic balance tasks compared with term children.
There was a negative relationship between motor impairment and postural control in all preschool age children. This indicated that children with a motor impairment demonstrated reduced postural control. Overall lower motor performance scores on the NSMDA and MABC-2 were correlated with increased postural sway and reduced functional performance in balance tasks. The child’s body mass had a significant effect on postural sway when adjusted for VPT/term group.
Conclusion: A greater…

▼ The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of the Sensory Organization Test in healthy college students. Reliability of the SOT is imperative in order to accurately assess the effectiveness of balance rehabilitation programs.
Thirty healthy young adults were recruited from undergraduate classes at the University of Georgia. The participants were tested on all six conditions of the SOT, which alter incoming sensory information. Participants returned to be retested on the SOT
after no more than 7 days. Results indicated a significant increase in several scores generated by the SOT between testing sessions. The stability reliability of the SOT was relatively low compared to the internal consistency reliability which was modest
to excellent. Clinicians should consider the amount of motor learning that takes place during the SOT when assessing the efficacy of a particular balance intervention using the SOT.

With advancing age, the human body suffers morphological and functional changes, which lead the postural instability in elderly people. And an important factor in this, are linked to the inappropriate uses of postural adjustments strategies: anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) and compensatory postural adjustments (CPA). Such strategies deal with an ability to respond effectively to a possible loss of balance and minimize the negative consequences of it. Although the difficulties in maintaining balance in the elderly to be known, strategies of postural adjustment, in the face of external perturbations are still scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the APAs and CPAs and their inter-relationships in groups of elderly with and without falls. For this purpose, two groups of 20 elderly participants (with and without history of falls) and 20 young subjects received external perturbations of posture in the frontal plane,…

tarefa e a motivação.
Introduction: The postural control is the basis of human movement, and it can be studied through such
tasks as sit-to-stand and reach. In people with cognitive deficit these tasks often show neuromotor alterations. Objective: to describe the changes in the relation between body segments in the motion
sequence of sit-to-stand-to-reach in adolescents with cognitive deficit, after an intervention program of
physiotherapy based on the Bobath Concept/Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT). Methods: before
and after the physiotherapy intervention it was filmed the lateral and posterior views of the motion
sequence of sit-to-stand-to-reach, which was subsequently divided into five phases, for observational and
quantitative analysis. Quantitative analysis consisted on the measurement of the distance between the
tragus-acromion, iliac crest-acromion, homolateral posterior superior iliac spine -T1, inferior angles of the
scapula and homolateral inferior angle of the scapula-T1, using the SAPo - Postural Analysis Software.
Results: in general, after the intervention, it was detected changes in both the observational and
quantitative analysis inthe relation between the body segments. Conclusion: The changes in the relation

The aim of this study was to analyze postural control as a function of predictability of a load lifted with the hands, and demand of spatial accuracy in the task. Fifteen males (mean age: 22.8 3.5 years) lifted boxes with variable masses (1, 3 and 5 kg), in conditions of predictable or unpredictable load. The task was performed either under lower spatial accuracy demand or aiming at a spatial target. Displacement of center of pressure (CP) and kinematics of the main joints/box motion were analyzed to access postural perturbation induced by the lifting task. Results showed that unpredictability about mass of the box enhanced CP displacement. Enhanced CP displacement was also observed in situations of decreased mass regarding the previous trial, even when participants were aware about the change. The pointing task induced decreased (a) CP displacement, (b) box lifting velocity, and (c) ankle and hip motion amplitude. These results indicate that predictability about external forces acting on the body, spatial demand of manual tasks, and movement organization/feedback of the previous trial interact to affect postural control

This study assessed the effect of stability constraints imposed by a voluntary task on the adaptation of postural responses to an external perturbation in healthy adults and in elderly individuals with Parkinsons disease (PD). In Experiment 1 subjects with PD and age-matched controls were perturbed through a backward translation of the support surface while standing and performing two versions of a voluntary task: holding a tray with a cylinder placed with the flat side down (LC) or with the rolling round side down (HC). Participants performed alternating blocks of low and high constraint trials. Parkinsons disease participants accomplished the voluntary task as well as controls, showing slower tray velocity in the high, as compared with the low, constraint context. Latency of postural responses was longer in the high constraint context only for control subjects. Control subjects presented different patterns of hip-shoulder coordination as a function of task constraint, whereas PD subjects had a relatively invariable pattern. These results suggest that Parkinsons disease impairs the capacity to adapt postural responses to constraints imposed by a…

Previous studies have shown that automatic postural responses can be influenced by cortical processing associated with learning, prior experience, and precue. However, scarce behavioral evidence has been provided about how postural responses are modulated by different contextual information in the elderly. The present investigation aimed at evaluating how different contextual information through prior experience and precueing about direction and/or time of basis of support rotation modulate reactive postural responses of elderly. The task consisted of recovering stable upright body balance in response to rotation of the support basis, inducing dorsi or plantar flexion with fixed amplitude and velocity. In Experiment 1 young and elderly people performed four experimental conditions resulting from combination of visual precue about direction of rotation and prior experience through repetitive or random sequences of trials. In Experiment 2 participants were provided with precueing about direction and/or time of platform rotation. Results showed that series of trials with the same direction of rotation induced decreased center of pressure oscillation and muscular activation, whereas random series induced shorter latencies of…

One of the most important tasks of the human postural control system is the balance of the body on a small base of support supplied by the feet. The assessment of postural control represents a challenge task, however presents implications of a big value to professionals from different areas like the Otoneurology, Phonoaudiology, Physiotherapy and others. However, its assessment can be carried out through various equipments, among them the Foam-laser Posturografy Dynamic (FLP), that is a method capable of measuring the body variations, in 6 conditions named Organization Sensorial Test (TOS) and still identifying the contribution of each one of the sensorial systems involved on the balance, it has been widely used. The present study has as objective to evaluate the correlation of the results of the postural control assessment in normal young adults, obtained by means of the FLP and the platform of power. For the accomplishment of the study 30 individuals young adults (21,17 1,45 years old) 19 men and 11 women, academics of UFSMs physical education course were invited, which were submitted to the TOS evaluation by mean of the FLP and platform of power simultaneously. The results revealed that there was correlation rate statistically significant among the 6 conditions of the FLP, with area of displacement of the pressure center (CP) registered by the power platform. No total, 59 indivíduos participaram deste estudo.
The human body adopts a number of strategies to maintain an upright position. The analysis of the human balance allows for the understanding and identification of such strategies. The displacement of the centre of pressure (COP) is a measure that has been successfully employed in studies regarding the postural control. Recent studies have shown that the elderly population is growing very fast in many countries all over the world, and therefore, researches that try to understand changes in this group are required. In this context, this study proposes the analysis of the postural control, measured by the displacement of the COP, in groups of young and elderly adults. In total 59 subjects participated of this study. They were divided into seven groups according to their age. The displacement of the COP was collected for each subject standing on a force plate. Two experimental conditions, of 30 seconds each, were investigated: opened eyes and closed eyes. Traditional and recent digital signal processing tools were employed for…

(UPE) e unipodal direito (UPD).
postural; ABSTRACT:Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the parameters from the
nonlinear oscillations of the center of pressure of young athletes aged 10
years and 15 years, from different sports. The main propose was to
understand the behavior revealed in
postural control using nonlinear
methods, form the parameters: exponent Lyaponov (yLe), Approximate
Entropy (EnAp), and Auto-correlation (AuCo).
Methods: The total number of participants in this study was forty-five
athletes (male) with age between ten and fifteen years (M = 13.21 ± 2.12),
height (162.3 ± 10.3 cm), weight (524.3 ± 120 N). Nine athletes from five
different sports (Hockey, Basketball, Rugby, Swimming and Volleyball). The
collection of the positions of pressure centers in AP and ML components
was performed through the force plate. Each participant performed two
repetitions of 60 seconds each in the eyes open condition (BOA) and two in
the eyes closed condition (BOF), and two tests in the one leg stand - left-leg
position (UPE) and right-leg (UPD).
Conclusions: It can be concluded that despite some differences in the
comparisons performed on the time series obtained from the fluctuations in
component anteroposterior and mediolateral no differences in the behavior
assumed by the participants in this study on how the
postural control
process.

A avaliação do controlo
postural em idosos; ABSTRACT:This study's main objective was to characterize the profile of
postural control in elderly through traditional methods. A sample of 75 people aged 68 years mean ± 6 years, according to the WHO considered old youth. 40 elements in the sample are regular practitioners of a structured physical activity programs and 35 elements are not engaged in structured physical activity.
Data were collected on a platform of forces, through the CoP, in accordance with guidance from the volunteer. Signs of the platform and formula CoP anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML), calculated and transformed the data into action, observable in stabilogram using formulas in MATLAB. The variables analyzed were the total displacement of the oscillation (DOT), root mean square (RMS) amplitude of displacement (ACP), Average Speed (VM), Total Average Speed (VMT), Area, Average Frequency (FM) and analysis of frequency spectral peak frequency, frequency at 50% of the power spectrum and 80% of the power spectrum.
After data analysis it is concluded that significant differences exist between Eyes open / Eyes closed, in measures of medio lateral oscillation between practice and not structured in the practice of PA in total displacement of oscillation-DOT, the amplitude of the displacement ACP ml, in Area in the ml plane, the VM EC (Eyes Closed), VMT EC (Eyes Closed) at Frequency Average EC…

To analyze the variability profile of
Postural Control in Pregnant Women, during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first trimester postpartum. Sample: It consisted of 20 pregnant participants, age 33 ± 3anos, height 165 ± 0.04 cm, with 29 or more weeks of gestation. This was divided into eight groups, G1 (from 38 weeks until birth) and G2 (4 weeks to 8 weeks after delivery), G3 (34 weeks until delivery) and G4 (birth at 12 weeks), G5 (between 29 and 34 weeks) and G6 (between 34 and 41 weeks) and G7 (4-8 weeks postpartum) and G8 (8 to 16 weeks after delivery). Methods: We performed a review of posturography in support bipedal eyes open and closed, eyes open and unipodal calculated Approximate Entropy (ApEn), Lyapunov exponent (Ely) and autocorrelation (AuCorr) as nonlinear parameters. As linear parameters were analyzed Base Area Support Area (BOS), Angle Formed between Feet (α BOS), and width of the Feet (MFW). Conclusion: No significant differences for any of the parameters linear studies. What seems to mean that the
postural adjustments occurring in pregnancy result from the fact there is great intra-individual variability. As for nonlinear analysis group of antepartum seems to present a profile of
postural control more complex than the postnatal group. This increase in complexity of the oscillations can tell us more automatic
postural control and less restricted, with oscillations more efficient, more characteristic of a healthy system.

The objective of this work was to improve the prevention of falls in seniors by (i) improving the detection of people at risk, (ii) providing new tools for assessing postural control and (iii) studying the effects of rehabilitation program by electrostimulation on the markers of the risk of falling. In order to meet these three objectives, three parts were developed:The aim of Part I was to provide tools for better detection of persons at risk of falls or fractures through the identification of factors responsible for a decline in postural control. We have been able to establish through three studies that (i) elderly patients who take five or more drugs per day are at higher risk of cognitive and mobility impairments, (ii) subjects who undergo fractures have a stabilization deficit after obstacle crossing and (iii) fractured fallers reduce their walking speed less during dual-task walking. In Part II we evaluated for the first time the braking of the center of mass, a parameter correlated with the quality of the postural control, with a kinematic analysis technique. It has been demonstrated that the technic usually used, the force-plate analysis, presents greater variability and leads to an underestimation of the braking index in comparison with this new method of analysis. In Part III we tested the effectiveness of a training program by…
