▼ The development of the cochlear implant (CI) has provided access to speech for many people with profound hearing impairment. While access to coarse spectral information supports the perception of vowels and consonants, the temporal fine structure which supports an accurate perception of pitch is generally not perceived by CI users. In English, a stress-accent language, intonation is part of the prosodic system, and is realised through variations in pitch. For those profoundly deaf individuals who are implanted prelingually, the development of prosody is based solely on the input they receive from their device. In this study, the perception and production of prosody was investigated in a group of prelingually-deaf adolescent CI users, and compared to that of a normally-hearing (NH) control group. The CI users ranged in age from 12.1 – 21.5 years at the time of testing, with a mean age of implantation of 4.5 years, and a mean of 11.0 years experience listening with their CI. All used Nucleus devices and the Advanced Combinational Encoder (ACE) or SPeak processing strategies. The analysis of the perception and production of prosody by this group is of particular interest, as they form the first cohort of prelingually-deaf CI users who have now reached an age where their development of intonation should be mature, but who were implanted ‘early’ (for the time) at the Melbourne Cochlear Implant Clinic in Melbourne, Australia. Results of standard measures of speech perception and production indicated that the CI group members largely perceived vowels and consonants accurately with use of their CI, and produced acceptable phonetic variants of these sounds as well. The group also scored highly when discriminating between speech tokens with a stable fundamental frequency (F0) and those having a rising F0 of 11, 15 or 19 semitones (st). When discriminating between differences in rise onset and offset alignment which are typical of early- and late-aligned bitonal intonational pitch accents, the NH group could reliably discriminate differences in tonal alignment of 80 milliseconds. The CI group members performed inconsistently, with the results of only four users patterning in the same way as those of the NH listeners. The analysis of the production of prosody made use of an autosegmental metrical approach which combined phonetic and phonological considerations, and auditory and acoustic analyses. At a phrasal level, the CI users made more use of variations to phrasing to mark linguistic focus than the NH speakers did. The simultaneous control of durational cues at different levels of the prosodic hierarchy was a problem for the CI users, whose lengthening of the prosodic foot at the phrasal level reduced the cues to strong/weak syllables at the syllable level. ▼ Good tone is one of an alto saxophone player's greatest assets and consequently deserves high priority in training and pedagogy. The current pedagogical literature gives little attention to tone production on the saxophone. The mouthpiece is the link between the player and the saxophone. This study examined the effect of the normal mouthpiece pitch and the pitch range produced on the saxophone mouthpiece on alto saxophone tone quality . In this experimental study, recordings were made of forty-three student alto saxophone players who performed tasks consisting of three saxophone mouthpiece exercises and four short musical phrases on the saxophone. The tape recordings were used to provide a spectral analysis of the tone samples by Fast Fourier Transform Analysis, and to allow qualitative analysis by five expert judges. The judges used a saxophone listening profile to provide qualitative evaluation of the recordings. Cluster analysis produced three groups of subjects according to combinations of the mouthpiece pitch and range produced. The mean sustained mouthpiece pitch and mouthpiece range of the groups were: Cluster 1 - 790 Hz and 550 cents; Cluster 2 1023 Hz and 150 cents: and Cluster 3 - 820 Hz and 1203 cents. Analysis of variance was used to test for statistically significant differences between the clusters. Discriminant analysis was used to identify other variables which contributed to the formation of the three clusters. The quantitative analysis of both mouthpiece and saxophone tones provided no insight into the spectra of the student subjects. The qualitative analysis using bipolar descriptors provided valid criteria which could be applied consistently for the analysis of student saxophone tone. A Tonal Index was computed from the judges' ratings in order to test for differences in tone between the clusters. Analysis of variance tests showed significant differences in the tone produced by the clusters on both the mouthpiece and the saxophone. The tone produced by Cluster 3 was significantly different to that produced by Clusters 1 and 2 at the p < .05 level. Discriminant analysis identified the use of saxophone tone models (through comparative critical listening) and small group performance as significant predictor variables (at the p < .05 level) in the formation of the clusters. The results of this study suggest that tone production on the alto saxophone is improved through the development of control on the mouthpiece. It was concluded that routine practice with the mouthpiece can serve in the development of a flexible and responsive embouchure and oral cavity and that students need to develop a mental concept of saxophone tone as part of the development of tone production. ▼ Während mittels bildgebender Verfahren ein Netzwerk von Hirnregionen identifiziert werden konnte, das der Wahrnehmung und Wiedergabe von Lauten dient, ist die genaue Funktion einzelner Knoten innerhalb dieses Netzwerkes unbekannt. Für die willkürliche Kontrolle der menschlichen Stimme postulieren wir eine kausale Rolle des Gyrus temporalis superior posterior (pSTG) und des Gyrus frontalis inferior posterior (pIFG) der linken und rechten Hemisphäre. In dieser Arbeit wird die Funktion dieser Areale durch reversible Läsionsstudien mithilfe der transkraniellen Gleichstromstimulation (tDCS) untersucht. Methoden: In zwei Experimenten, bestehend aus je fünf separaten Stimulationen, erhielten die Probanden je eine kathodische Stimulation über dem pSTG und dem pIFG jeder Hemisphäre sowie eine Placebostimulation. Im ersten Experiment sollten die Probanden (n = 10) eine Tonfolge wiedergeben, wobei die Genauigkeit der Tonwiedergabe nach erfolgter tDCS gemessen wurde. Im zweiten Experiment hörten die Probanden (n = 15) sich selbst summen. Dieses Feedback wurde unerwartet in der Tonhöhe verändert. Die Kompensation zum transponierten Feedback nach Hirnstimulation wurde gemessen und mit Daten von Amusikern (n = 8), die keine Hirnstimulation erhielten, verglichen. Alle Daten wurden digital aufgenommen, weiterverarbeitet und ausgewertet. Ergebnisse: Nach Stimulation über dem linken pIFG und dem rechten pSTG wird die Tonhöhe einer zu imitierenden Tonfolge weniger exakt wiedergegeben als unter Placebostimulation. Des Weiteren nehmen alle nicht-amusischen Probanden ungewollte Veränderungen im Feedback ihrer eigenen Stimme wahr und kompensieren ohne Stimulation hierfür. Amusiker hingegen zeigen keine Reaktion auf verändertes Feedback. Reduziert man die neuronale Erregbarkeit in dem linken pIFG und dem rechten pSTG, kompensieren musikalisch geschulte Probanden in geringerem Maße als ohne Stimulation. Probanden ohne musikalisches Training zeigen keinen Einfluss der tDCS auf das Ausmaß der Kompensation. Unabhängig von musikalischem Training reagieren jedoch alle Probanden nach kathodischer tDCS über dem rechten pSTG langsamer auf das veränderte Feedback ihrer eigenen Stimme. Fazit: In dieser Arbeit konnte gezeigt werden, dass sowohl der Gyrus frontalis inferior posterior als auch der Gyrus temporalis superior posterior wichtige Knotenpunkte in einem bihemisphäriellen Netzwerk der Stimmkontrolle sind. Die neuronalen Mechanismen einer effizienten Stimmhöhenregulation sind zu einem gewissen Maße trainingsabhängig. tDCS ist eine geeignete Methode, die Lautproduktion zu modulieren und sollte vermehrt in der Therapie von Sprechstörungen zum Einsatz kommen. ▼ The relationship between speech perception and production has been debated for a long time. The Motor Theory of speech perception (Liberman et al., 1989) claims that perceiving speech is identifying the intended articulatory gestures rather than perceiving the sound patterns. It seems to suggest that speech production precedes speech perception, i.e., only when people can accurately ‘feel’ their vocal tract gestures, can they successfully perceive speech. One prediction that falls out from the Motor Theory is that training people to produce sounds should be more effective for improving the perceptual ability than training people to only perceive sounds. My dissertation aims to test this prediction by comparing the effects of laboratory perception training and production training as well as the effects of different musical backgrounds (i.e., vocalists and instrumentalists) on the perception of lexical tones. The present dissertation encompasses three experiments. The first experiment compared native English non-musicians, instrumentalists and vocalists on the perception and production of Mandarin tones. The results supported previous findings, demonstrating the advantage of musical training on lexical tone perception. However, no additional benefit was found for musicians with vocal experience in addition to instrumental experience on either lexical tone perception or production. The second experiment recorded both behavioral and electrophysiological data to examine the effectiveness of a perception-only training and a perception-plus-production training on lexical tone perception. The data showed that after training participants in both groups improved on tone discrimination. Moreover, the participants in both groups did not differ in tone processing at the intentional or unintentional level after training. The third experiment, using identification training rather than the discrimination training, demonstrated that the identification-plus-imitation group identified the tones more quickly in the post-training task than in the pre-training task while the identification-only group did not show any improvement in terms of reaction time. These results suggested that the employment of the motor system does not specifically benefit the tone perceptual skills. ▼ A large body of evidence suggests that the motor system maintains a forward model that predicts the sensory outcome of movements. When sensory feedback does not match the predicted consequences, a compensatory response corrects for the motor error and the forward model is updated to prevent future errors. Like other motor behaviours, vocalization relies on sensory feedback for the maintenance of forward models and to stabilize vocalizations. Experiment 1 used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine sensory processing of short feedback perturbations during an ongoing utterance. In one session, participants produced a vowel at an FO of their own choosing. In another session, participants matched the FO of a cue voice. An FO perturbation of 0,25, 50,100, or 200 cents was introduced for 100 ms. A mismatch negativity (MMN) was observed. Differences between sessions were only found for 200 cents perturbations. Reduced compensation when speakers experienced the 200 cents perturbations suggests that this larger perturbation was perceived as externally generated. The presence of an MMN, and no earlier (N100) response suggests that the underlying sensory process used to identify and compensate for errors in mid-utterance may differ from feedback monitoring at utterance onset. In Experiment 2, we used a frequency altered feedback (FAF) paradigm to study the role of auditory feedback in the control of vocal pitch (F0). We adapted participants to a one semitone shift and induced a perturbation by briefly removing the altered feedback. This was compared to a control block in which a 1 semitone perturbation was introduced into an unshifted trial, or trials were randomly shifted up 1 semitone, and a perturbation was introduced by removing the feedback alteration. The compensation response to mid-utterance perturbations was identical in all conditions, and was always smaller than the compensation to a shift at utterance onset. These results are explained by a change in the control strategy at utterance onset and midutterance. At utterance onset, auditory feedback is compared to feedback predicted by a forward model to ensure the pitch goal is achieved. However, after utterance onset, the control strategy switches and stabilization is maintained by comparing feedback to previous FO production. Experiment 1 showed a MMN in response to a mid-utterance perturbation, which is distinct from the N100 found in previous studies that examined perturbations at utterance onset. This result suggests that there may be different underlying neurological mechanisms for the detection of perturbations at utterance onset and mid-utterance. Experiment 2 adds support for this idea by showing a difference in the compensation responses to mid-utterance and onset perturbations. We conclude that different mechanisms may be used to detect errors and compensate for these errors at utterance onset versus mid-utterance.

The growing importance of renewable energy to meet the demands of growing population has driven much focus for research in the wind energy sector. Currently most of the power production in the wind energy sector is done using the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT). due to its higher efficiency and reliability as compared to Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). However, due to limitations of HAWTs such as the complex yaw mechanism, higher positioning of the center of mass and relatively difficult up-scaling, VAWT are receiving more attention. Attempt to access high range of power from VAWTs at offshore locations may damage the turbine blades due to increased loads. This thesis is dedicated to reduce the periodic disturbances on the turbine blades of VAWTs without affecting the total power production in a rotation, thereby ensuring the reliability and safe operation of VAWT. A control technique called Subspace Predictive Repetitive Controller (SPRC) is used for the recursive identification to estimate the parameters of wind turbine model and further providing an optimal control law accordingly. Basis functions have been used to reduce the dimensionality of the system, following which the system identification has been performed in the lifted domain. Using the identified model, two types of control approaches have been applied. In the first approach, the objective function is to track a specific reference that indicates blade load. This reference ensures a reduction in peak loads of the VAWT by transferring the loads from their upstream to their downstream part, without comprising on the power production in one whole rotation of VAWT. In the second approach, a general control strategy is used in which the controller is given freedom to choose the pitch trajectory so as to reduce the blade loads. The controller is specified with a power reference that ensures the maintenance of total power. This strategy allows the turbine to be operated in different wind conditions, as a higher weighting is assigned to power production when wind speeds are less than rated wind speeds, and a higher weighting is assigned to the reduction of blade load when wind speeds are more than the rated wind speeds. . These results show a real potential of the data-driven SPRC approach in wind turbines, and highlights new mechanisms to reduce the turbine loads on \ac{VAWT}s. These mechanisms offer valuable insights into enhancing the functions of VAWTs in a more reliable and damage-free manner.

För vindkraftverk i mindre skala används i huvudsak två sätt att avlasta vid höga vindhastigheter, stallreglering och girning ur vind. En tredje metod är att pitcha rotorbladet till en mindre attackvinkel. Då minskar belastningen på rotorbladet samtidigt som effektgenerering kan bibehållas. Arbetet redovisar en konstruktion för en fjädrande passiv mekanisk pitch som avgränsats till att enbart dimensionera en vridfjäder och tre lager. Konstruktionen riktas mot horisontalaxlade vindkraftverk med tre rotorblad med en rotordiameter upp till 20m. Ett idealt rotorblad modelleras matematiskt för att ta fram dimensionerande krafter och moment. Utifrån detta kan sedan vridfjäder och lager dimensioneras. Konstruktionen tillsammans med dimensioneringen visar att belastning av rotorbladet kan reduceras samt att krafter som är kopplad till effekten kan hållas mer eller mindre konstant för vindhastigheter 16 till 24 m/s. Resultat av dimensionering visar att både vridfjäder och lager kan relativt enkelt anpassas till olika axeldiametrar. Slutsatserna blir att om dimensionering görs enligt arbetet är det, åtminstone i teorin, möjligt att uppnå det önskade beteendet för pitchen. För vidare arbete och verifiering rekommenderas bland annat att göra reella tester för vridfjädern för att bestämma dess precision på grund av fjäderns små vinkelutslag.

For small-scale wind turbines, there are mainly two ways of reducing loads at high wind speeds, stall regulation and yaw the rotor out of wind. A third method is to pitch the rotor blade to a smaller angle of attack. This reduces the load on the rotor blade while maintaining power generation. The following work presents a design for a spring based passive mechanical pitch that is limited to only dimensioning a torsion spring and three bearings. The design is aimed at horizontal axis wind turbines with three rotor blades with a rotor diameter up to 20m. An ideal rotor blade is mathematically modeled to produce the forces and torques needed in order to properly dimension the torsion spring and bearings. The design shows that the load of the rotor blade can be reduced and that forces connected to the power can be kept more or less constant for wind speeds 16 to 24 m / s. The results of sizing show that both the torsion spring and bearings can be adapted to different shaft diameters relatively easy. The conclusions are that if dimensioning is done according to the presented results, it is possible, at least in theory, to achieve the desired behaviour. For further development and verification it is recommended to do real tests for the torsion spring to determine its precision due to small angle displacement in the spring.

▼ The productions of adult second language (L2) learners are often detected as having a foreign accent by native speakers of the target language. However, there is no clear answer for what kind of problems contribute to L2 learners’ foreign accent. This thesis aims to investigate potential factors behind foreign accent. We intend to achieve this goal by examining cross-linguistic empirical evidence of the L2 acquisition of Japanese lexical pitch accent by English learners. L2 prosody has been found to significantly influence native speakers’ auditory impression of foreign accent. L2 prosody also allows us to test crosslinguistic differences in the function of the key acoustic correlates of L2 contrasts. In this thesis we examine F0, which signals both lexical pitch accent and phrasal distinctions in Japanese, but which signals only phrasal distinctions, not lexical distinctions, in English. For adult L2 learners to achieve target-like productions, the literature suggests that three abilities are the key factors: 1) learners’ ability to differentiate the acoustic correlate of the target L2 contrasts, 2) ability to articulate the acoustic correlate of the target L2 contrasts and 3) ability to categorize the target L2 contrasts. This thesis evaluates all three of these potential factors. The main contribution of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive view of foreign accent, by investigating possible interactions between the factors and by examining the different abilities of the same learners. Another contribution is to provide empirical evidence for the nature of learners’ problems with foreign accent during L2 acquisition, by testing two groups of English learners of Japanese (experienced and inexperienced) in comparison with Japanese native speakers. The first experiment used intelligibility scores and overall F0 patterns to quantify the degree of foreign accent in the learners’ productions of Japanese lexical pitch accent. The second experiment showed that the learners’ ability to differentiate F0 contours in a nonspeech context was equal to that of the native speakers. The third experiment showed that the learners’ ability to articulate the F0 contours in a non-speech context differed from that of the native speakers. The fourth experiment showed that although learners were able to hear the phonetic differences between the target L2 contrasts, due to poor formation of the target L2 categories and poor lexical assignment ability, the inexperienced learners seem to have greater difficulty than experienced learners both in categorizing boundary items into the target L2 categories and in assigning the L2 categories to lexical items. Overall, the foreign accent of adult L2 learners’ productions is explained through a combination of articulation and categorization factors. Importantly, this cross-sectional study has indicated how learners’ problems with foreign accent change as they gain L2 experience. The aim of this study is to gain insight into how experienced children’s choir conductors work with the development of voices in the elementary school age. The work primarily focuses on aspects of vocal production such as finding and matching pitch, intonation, tone quality, resonance and falsetto singing. Because of the inherent complex nature of singing, the work also to some extent covers other aspects of choir singing such as breath, posture and organisation. Three experienced Swedish choir directors were interviewed with a qualitative method. The results show that the directors’ methods were similar, emphasizing good voice quality of the director, high registry singing, and enhancing listening skills over detailed work with resonance and tone quality. The results also show that the choir directors were coherent with and to some extent relied on the same method literature that forms the backbone of this work. This study brings to light what methods are used by todays children’s choir directors and further underscores the relevance of existing literature.

Uppsatsens syfte är att ge inblick i hur erfarna körledare arbetar med röstutveckling hos barn i lågstadieåldern. De huvudsakliga områden som undersöks är körledarnas arbete med tonträffning, intonation, tonkvalitet, resonans och huvudklang. På grund av körsångens komplexa natur avhandlar arbetet även i viss mån övriga aspekter såsom andning, hållning och organisering av kören. Uppsatsen bygger på material från tre kvalitativa intervjuer med erfarna körledare. Resultatet visar att de tre körledarna använder sig av likartade metoder. Samtliga betonar vikten av att körledaren själv har en god röstkvalitet, att körsången sker i ett högt register anpassat till barnens röster och att körundervisningen bör fokusera på gehörsutveckling snarare än detaljarbete med resonans och tonkvalitet. Resultatet visar även att körledarnas metoder till stor del överensstämde med och i viss mån även utgick ifrån de källor som tas upp i uppsatsens litteraturkapitel. Uppsatsen visar på vilka metoder som används av erfarna barnkörledare och understryker även relevansen av den befintliga litteraturen i ämnet.

The human voice may convey meaningful information about socially and evolutionarily relevant characteristics of the vocalizer. In turn, listeners may readily evaluate personal characteristics, such as body size, on the basis of nonverbal voice features. Research investigating vocal communication of physical size in humans has focused on two salient and largely independent voice features, fundamental frequency and/or corresponding harmonics (perceived as voice pitch) and formant frequencies (resonance frequencies of the supralaryngeal vocal tract). However, the degree to which fundamental and formant frequencies reliably predict variation in body size controlling for sex and age, and their relative role in the perception or accurate estimation of body size, has to date been unclear. In the current thesis, using meta-analysis, I establish that formants reliably predict variation in men’s and women’s heights and weights. In contrast, fundamental frequency only weakly predicts men’s heights and women’s weights. These findings corroborate work on many other mammals whose vocal production, like humans, follows the source-filter model. Despite the lack of a robust physical relationship between fundamental frequency and size within sexes, I further demonstrate that listeners utilize voice pitch to accurately gauge men’s relative height. My research suggests that voice pitch indirectly facilitates accurate size assessment by providing a carrier signal (i.e., dense harmonics) for formants. This is the first evidence that pitch does not confound accurate size estimation. Finally, I demonstrate that voices with lowered pitch, but not raised pitch, are perceived as larger when projected from a low than high spatial location. These results suggest that strong cross-modal perceptual biases linking low pitch to low elevation and large size may, in some contexts, cause errors in size estimation. Taken together, this thesis provides a detailed account of human vocal communication of body size, which can play a meaningful role in sexual and social contexts.
