▼ The problem of Third Party Interference (TPI) on Oil and Gas Pipelines is on the rise across the world. TPI is not only common in developing countries but is now occasionally experienced in developed countries including Germany and the UK. The risks posed by these third-party activities on Oil and Gas pipelines are enormous and could be measured in terms of financial costs, environmental damages as well as health and safety implications. The quest for an end to these malicious activities has triggered a lot of studies into the root causes of pipeline TPI, other causes of pipeline failure, risks associated with pipeline failure and their mitigation measures. However, despite the significance of the effects of TPI, very little has been done to proffer an enduring solution through research. This research therefore aims at developing a framework for integrated oil and gas pipeline monitoring and incident mitigation system through integration of various wireless sensors for effective monitoring of oil and gas pipelines. Having identified the existing gaps in literature as lack of reliable, accurate and standard method for oil and gas pipeline risk assessment model, the study undertook a quantitative approach to develop an effective Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) model for pipelines. The QRA model developed benchmarks pipeline risk assessment and gives the parameters with which standard QRA could be measured. The research findings indicate that risk associated with Nigerian Pipeline system is in the intolerable region whereas TPI is an increasing menace across the globe. Further findings show that Support Vector Machine (SVM) gave the best performance with 91.2% accuracy while Neural Networks (NN) and Decision Tree (DT) gave 63% and 57% accuracies respectively in terms of pipeline failure mode prediction accuracies. It was recommended that operators should draw out Pipeline Integrity Management (PIM) programs and store pipeline data in a format that captures number of fatalities, property damages and costs as well as volume of oil or gas spilled to ensure that accurate data is obtainable for improved PIM. In conclusion, having achieved its aim and objectives evidenced by the framework, model developed, and the recommendations presented, the research has contributed in no small measure to providing a solution to pipeline incidences.

▼ Slurry pipelines are widely utilized in most mining operations to transport the raw materials and the tailings. These pipelines typically suffer from high wear rates. For example, in Canada’s oil sands industry, pipeline wear rates of 1 cm/yr are considered representative. To generate and measure such wear rates at the pilot-scale, significant resources (time and materials) are required; therefore, limited pilot-scale pipeloop investigations have been performed to study erosion in slurry pipelines. The present study is focused on identifying the underlying mechanisms affecting slurry pipeline erosion. The main goal is to relate the parameters affecting pipeline friction loss to erosion rate. Initially, a lab-scale slurry pot tester was chosen to investigate the effects of slurry properties on erosion rate. In this phase, the effects of carrier fluid viscosity, impact angle and particle properties on erosion rate were studied. It was observed that particle density and shape strongly affect the erosion rate. Slurry-specimen impact angle also significantly changes the erosion rate. Finally, specimen erosion rates were measured at various carrier fluid viscosities. It was observed that carrier fluid viscosity has an indirect effect on the erosion rate. Using Bagnold’s methodology, the normal and shear stresses on the specimen surface were calculated. The magnitude of the normal and shear stresses on the surface were identified as the key parameters affecting the erosion rate. In the next phase of the study, a purpose-built pipeloop was utilized to study the effect of slurry hydrodynamics on erosion rate using silica sand and Al2O3 slurries. Two pipe diameters (75 and 63 mm) were utilized in this study. It was observed that independent of particle type and pipe diameter, the erosion rate increases with increasing velocity. However, the erosion data from the two pipe diameters revealed that velocity cannot be used to model erosion data. After examining the evidence available in the literature, solids shear stress was introduced as an alternative to velocity for the purpose of erosion rate prediction. It was observed that the pipe erosion rate increases logarithmically with increasing solids shear stress. In general, specimen surface stresses were identified as the key parameter affecting the erosion rate. Using solids stresses, a new model was proposed to predict the effect of flow parameters on erosion rate. The model proposed is capable of predicting the effect of flow parameters such as solids concentration and carrier fluid viscosity on erosion rate, which represents an important new tool for scale-up purposes. The results of this study can directly be applied to predict erosion rates in slurry pipelines in the mining industry and specifically in Canada’s oil sands industry.

The SIFT algorithm is one of the most widely used methods for image feature extraction. We develop a tile based template for running SIFT that facilitates the analysis while abstracting away lower-level details. We formalize the computational pipeline and the time to execute any algorithm on it based on the relative times taken by the pipeline stages. In the context of the SIFT algorithm, this reduces the time to that of running the entire image through a bottlenecked stage and the time to run either the first or last tile through the remaining stages. Through an experimental study of the SIFT algorithm on a broad collection of test images, we determined image feature fraction values, that relate the sizes of the image extracts as it the computation proceeds through the stages of the SIFT algorithm. We show that for a single chip uniprocessor pipeline, the computational stage is the bottleneck. ▼ Depuis plusieurs décennies, la fréquence des processeurs à usage général n'a cessé d'augmenter grâce aux transistors de plus en plus rapides et aux micro-architectures avec des pipelines plus profonds. Cependant il y a environ 10 ans, à cause des courants de fuite et de la température, la ﬁnesse de gravure des processeurs a atteint sa limite physique. Depuis, au lieu d'augmenter la fréquence du processeur, les fabricants ont intégré plus de cœurs sur une seule puce, agrandi la hiérarchie de caches et amélioré l'eﬃcacité énergétique. Cependant, il est également important d'accélérer les processeurs individuellement.La réduction de la consommation énergétique est donc devenue un objectif majeur lors de la conception d'une micro-architecture pour la haute performance. Certaines fonctionnalités ont été introduites dans les unités superscalaires principalement pour réduire la consommation énergétique. Un exemple de fonctionnalité est le tampon de boucles ("loop buﬀer"), qui est maintenant mis en œuvre dans plusieurs micro-architectures superscalaires. Le but d'un tampon de boucle est d'économiser l'énergie dans le bloc avant du microprocesseur (cache d'instructions, prédicteur de branchements, décodeur, etc.) lors de l'exécution d'une boucle avec un corps assez petit pour tenir dans cette mémoire tampon spéciﬁque. Si la fréquence du processeur reste constante, la seule possibilité laissée libre pour l'amélioration des performances des applications séquentielles dans les futurs processeurs est d'augmenter l'exploitation du parallélisme d'instructions. Certaines améliorations des micro-architectures (e.g., une meilleure prédiction de branchement) améliorent simultanément la performance et l'eﬃcacité énergétique. Cependant, améliorer l'exploitation du parallélisme d'instructions a généralement un coût: augmentation de la surface de silicium, de la consommation d'énergie, des eﬀorts de conception, etc. Par conséquent, la micro-architecture est modiﬁée lentement, incrément par incrément. En eﬀet, les fabricants de processeurs ont fait des eﬀorts continus aﬁn d'exploiter davantage l'ILP avec de meilleurs prédicteurs de branchements, de meilleurs pré-chargeurs de données, de plus grandes fenêtres d'instructions, ajout de registres physiques, et ainsi de suite. Cette thèse décrit ce que devraient être les unités superscalaires dans les 10 ans à venir et explore la possibilité d'exploiter le comportement des boucles aﬁn de réduire la consommation énergétique au-delà du bloc avant. Certaines propositions ont été publiées notamment sur les accélérateurs de boucles et sur les unités superscalaires à bloc arrière non conventionnel. Il est soutenu que la taille de la fenêtre d'instructions peut être augmentée en combinant le regroupement (clustering) et la spécialisation des registres d'écriture (register write specialization). ▼ Aging natural gas pipeline infrastructure is becoming an increasingly large problem in the United States. There are more than 2.4 million miles of pipelines currently in use, all of which require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure safety. It is estimated that 70% of these lines were installed prior to the widespread use of the most common inspection tool, pigs, and therefore require some other tool to carry out tasks such as direct line inspection, pipeline mapping, gas quality monitoring, and cleaning. This has prompted a large growth in the area of robotic inspection devices to fill this market gap. However, many of the robots developed either fall short of true autonomy, are unable to operate in live flow conditions, or are designed for only a specific pipe size. This thesis details the design of a robotic platform called MARPI, or Miniature Autonomous Robot for Pipeline Inspection, which addresses the weaknesses of both pigs and previous robots. MARPI is a wheeled robot that was developed to include several key features: energy harvesting, wireless communication, onboard navigation system, and a small profile and footprint in the pipe. The robot uses two 150:1 micro gear motors for its drive mechanism and features a permanent Neodymium magnet to make the robot adhere to the surface of steel pipes. The energy harvesting system was characterized through a series of wind tunnel experiments which showed that to maximize the power generated it is best to have a turbine with a high number of buckets/blades, streamlined bucket geometry, and a relatively large offset from a bluff body below. To carry out the design of MARPI, a statics model was developed and used to predict the magnetic force required to adhere to and avoid sliding in the pipe, and the motor torque required to propel the robot. This model was used to analyze the performance of the robot as a function of robot size. Key results show that to minimize power consumption, the robot should travel vertically with the flow, and to maximize range per day, a small robot with a large turbine is best. ▼ Pipelines extend thousands of kilometers across wide geographic areas as a network to provide essential services for modern life. It is inevitable that pipelines must pass through unfavorable ground conditions, which are susceptible to natural disasters. This thesis investigates the behaviour of buried pressure pipelines experiencing ground distortions induced by normal faulting. A recent large database of physical modelling observations on buried pipes of different stiffness relative to the surrounding soil subjected to normal faults provided a unique opportunity to calibrate numerical tools. Three-dimensional finite element models were developed to enable the complex soil-structure interaction phenomena to be further understood, especially on the subjects of gap formation beneath the pipe and the trench effect associated with the interaction between backfill and native soils. Benchmarked numerical tools were then used to perform parametric analysis regarding project geometry, backfill material, relative pipe-soil stiffness and pipe diameter. Seismic loading produces a soil displacement profile that can be expressed by isoil, the distance between the peak curvature and the point of contraflexure. A simplified design framework based on this length scale (i.e., the Kappa method) was developed, which features estimates of longitudinal bending moments of buried pipes using a characteristic length, ipipe, the distance from peak to zero curvature. Recent studies indicated that empirical soil springs that were calibrated against rigid pipes are not suitable for analyzing flexible pipes, since they lead to excessive conservatism (for design). A large-scale split-box normal fault simulator was therefore assembled to produce experimental data for flexible PVC pipe responses to a normal fault. Digital image correlation (DIC) was employed to analyze the soil displacement field, and both optical fibres and conventional strain gauges were used to measure pipe strains. A refinement to the Kappa method was introduced to enable the calculation of axial strains as a function of pipe elongation induced by flexure and an approximation of the longitudinal ground deformations. A closed-form Winkler solution of flexural response was also derived to account for the distributed normal fault pattern. Finally, these two analytical solutions were evaluated against the pipe responses observed in the large-scale laboratory tests.

The main objective of the research was to establish and rationalise the differences in hydrogen pick-up and susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE), both under three point bending (TPB) of notched hydrogen-charged samples and tensile testing of tubular samples pressurized with hydrogen. A particular concern was whether the susceptibility to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) was compromised by design of a lower Mn steel meeting X70 mechanical property specifications. The effects of electrolytic hydrogen charging on surface and internal damage, as well as fracture toughness, were studied in relation to grain size, microstructure, composition and the type and distribution of non-metallic inclusions and precipitates. The X70 steel consistently exhibited higher J_Q fracture toughness values (derived from TPB tests) than the MX70 strip, both before and after hydrogen charging. Electrolytic hydrogen charging experiments on thin strip samples (about 1 mm thick) indicated that the most rapid formation of surface blisters and HIC occurred for the banded ferrite-pearlite microstructures of the as-processed strip, followed by equiaxed TB ferritepearlite microstructure in the normalised condition, and then by the as-received TB sample with a ferrite-bainite microstructure, no blistering was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ) samples for up to 24 hours charging. In terms of measured diffusible hydrogen content after charging, the equiaxed (normalised) microstructure showed the lowest diffusible hydrogen content, followed by the banded ferrite-pearlite microstructures, the quasi-polygonal ferrite with bainite microstructure and finally the HAZ samples. In relation to residual hydrogen monitored after its release from stronger traps, the HAZ microstructures exhibited the lowest hydrogen content; followed by the equiaxed (normalized TB) microstructure; the quasi-polygonal ferrite and bainite microstructure of the as-received TB; and the banded ferritepearlite microstructures of the as-received strip steels. ▼ Pipeline steels used for sour service applications in the oil and gas industry are subjected to corrosive internal environments containing high partial pressures of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). During sour service, the presence of H2S allows for enhanced hydrogen ingress into the steel and subsequent internal cracking, a process called hydrogen induced cracking (HIC). The steels utilized for these applications are fine grained, thermomechanically processed (TMP) alloys with complex microstructures that can include microconstituents such as polygonal ferrite, quasi-polygonal ferrite, pearlite, martensite/austenite (M/A) microconstituents, non-metallic inclusions, and carbonitride precipitates. Steel cleanliness, inclusion shape control, and alloying strategies have been developed to mitigate HIC, yet it persists in higher strength steel grades, and would be relevant in other applications such as hydrogen pipelines. The primary objective of this study is to understand the interaction of HIC with the grain structures and secondary microconstituents in X52 and X70 steel alloys. Transgranular cracking was primarily observed in the X52 alloy, while both intergranular and transgranular cracking were observed in the X70 alloy. Misorientation distribution functions characterizing grain boundaries in the as-received material were compared to discrete misorientations measured across boundaries in cracked regions. Low angle boundaries (2 to 5) appeared the most often in the X52 material and cracked the most often. In contrast, low angle boundaries (2 to 5) appeared much less frequently in cracked regions in the X70 alloy than in the as-received microstructure. However, 5 to 25 misorientation boundaries appeared more frequently in cracked regions in both alloys. The boundary type with the highest multiples of a random distribution in the AR X70 material, 43.6 <100>, did not exhibit any cracking. These boundaries appear to be interphase ferrite/cementite boundaries in the AR X70 steel. It is hypothesized that these regions contain cementite precipitates that affect local hydrogen diffusion. Analysis of transgranular cracking revealed that the crack trace was found near both cleavage and slip plane traces at various locations along the crack length in both alloys, indicating that hydrogen could play an important role in the mechanism of transgranular cracking. In addition, M/A microconstituents occurred with equal frequency alongside cracks and in the AR X70 at the centerline, suggesting that M/A constituents are not more susceptible to cracking than other microstructural constituents. ▼ Pipelines are one of the safest forms of transportation for oil and gas. However, pipelines may experience some defects, such as cracks, corrosion and cracks in corrosion, during service period. In this thesis, the current defect assessment methods for crack, corrosion and crack in corrosion defects are reviewed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the crack in corrosion defects on the failure pressure of natural gas transmission pipelines. Consequently, a series of burst tests with varying defect depths were undertaken on end-capped, seam-welded API 5L Grade X60 (433 MPa yield stress) pipeline steel of external diameter 508 mm (20 inch), 5.7 mm wall thickness. Defects were created by pre-fatiguing the pipe to create a crack. The number of cycles required to create a fatigue crack were varied between 75000 to 150000 cycles based on the desired final defect depth. For the (CIC) defects, the pipe was pre-fatigued to create a sharp crack, and the artificial corrosion defect was simulated by machining a rectangular groove over the fatigue crack. The rupture tests were conducted by pressurizing the pipe until failure occurred. Results were analyzed using various assessment methods. For the artificial corrosion defects, the predicted failure pressures based on RSTRENG were more reliable than those based on Modified B31G. This study revealed that CorLAS provided the least conservative prediction for crack defects, whereas the other methods provided more conservative estimates of failure pressure. Moreover, the predicted failure pressure of the level 3 FAD for API 579 cylinder equations had better agreement with experimental results in comparison with the other methods, i.e. BS7910 and NG-18. The failure pressure for CIC defects for pipes tested fell between corrosion defects (lower bound) and crack defects (upper bound). The transition to crack defect behavior only occurs when the crack defect depth is significant or vice versa. It should be noted that the crack to corrosion ratio is not the only parameter to evaluate a CIC defect. There are other parameters such as total defect depth and defect profile, which affect the failure behavior of a CIC defect.

▼ Pipelines transport millions of barrels of petroleum products every day. Oil and gas pipelines have become important assets of the economic development of almost any country. Government regulations or internal policies regulate the safety of the assets for the population and environment where these pipelines run. Various strategies and technologies have been introduced for monitoring pipelines, but the most common technology to protect pipelines from occasional hazardous incidents is Computational Pipeline Monitoring (CPM). This technique collects and gathers information from the field related to pressures, flows, and temperatures to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the product being transported. Using the gathered information CPM systems compare its values with standard values and provides a notification if any anomaly or unexpected situation occurs. The result is an alarm to an operator in a supervisory control room. According to Hollifield, it is becoming an increasing problem that there is no standard for plant operators yet, whereas improved design can lead to better performance (Hollifield et. al., 2007). So, the objective of this experiment was to explore the effect of different alarm interfaces on controller response at different alarm rates. A simulated liquid pipeline system was developed and a between subject experimental design was performed to evaluate three different types of alarm window interfaces (Categorical, Chronological, and Revised Categorical), two alarm rates (10 in 10 minutes and 20 in 10 minutes), and three levels of alarms (high, medium, and low). Thirty one participants participated in this research, and the performance of participants was measured in terms of acknowledgement time, response time and the accuracy of response. Results showed that the participants’ performance in terms of response time, acknowledgement time, and accuracy of response was significantly different between chronological, categorical, and revised categorical displays. Data analysis showed that the means were shorter in revised categorical display in terms of response time, acknowledgement time, and accuracy of response. This study will be useful in developing new standards for alarm display.

▼ In the Netherlands most houses and buildings are connected to a gas network since the nineteen seventies to heat our houses and cook. In march of this year the new Dutch government announced that to meet the climate accord of Paris all dutch household should be of the gas net in 2030. To do this multiple alternatives to heat homes are available and one of those which has proven to be feasible over the last years is district heat. In a district heating network hot water is pumped round a city through a network of pipe lines to houses and other buildings. The network is split into a primary and a secondary network. In the primary network the heat is transported from the source, and in the secondary network the heat is pumped from a substation to the customers. The heat usually is rest heat of a STEG- or waste incineration power plant. With the increasing demand for heat due to the disconnection of the gas network, and at the same time the search for a more sustainable heat source for the district heating network like geothermal heat the prices and costs rise rapidly. This makes the heat loss in the system a more important issue also from a financial perspective. The current installed networks are all series 1 single pipe lines of ST/PUR/PE, this means the inner pipe through which the water flows is steal, followed by an insulating PUR layer which is covered by a protective PE layer. To decrease the heat loss from the pipe lines Nuon is looking at two possible options. Series 2 single piping which has a thicker insulating PUR layer and second the twin pipeline where both the steal supply and return lines are embedded into one insulating PUR layer and a protective PE shell. The heat loss calculations for the buried pipelines in the ground are done using empirical formulas found in literature. These are checked numerical using a pde-solver. Comparing both results it was the concluded the empirical formulas give a good approximation of the heat loss. It also showed the heat loss is for a great deal depended on the temperature in the pipe and the ground temperature. In current heat loss calculations done by Nuon the temperature gradient of the water entering the network and leaving the network in not taken into consideration. By using the ambient temperature and a formula formulated in literature an estimation of the ground temperature at the buried depth of the pipelines can be made. By dividing the network into a number of pieces with length 푑푥 and an individual temperature 푇 the temperature gradient over the entire network is taken into account. Collected data by Nuon concerning the user demand and the ambient temperature makes it possible to simulate what is the mass flow through the system at any given time and to analyze how the system responds to a demand fluctuation. By analyzing what happens in the networks in term of heat loss during a diurnal heat curve the results show that the heat loss stays nearly constant during a day.
