Although broadband photometry has been used to infer information about artifcial satellites since soon after the launch of Sputnik 1, to date there has not been a coherent progression of understanding regarding the information that can be obtained, and the most effective methods of doing so. Many individual studies, and some long ongoing experiments, have used costly metre-class telescopes to obtain data despite other experiments demonstrating that much more flexible and affordable small aperture telescopes may be suitable for the task. In addition, due to the highly time consuming and weather dependent nature of obtaining photometric observations, many studies have suffered from limited data sets or relied upon simulations to support their claims. Therefore, an experiment was conducted with the aim of determining the utility of small aperture telescopes for conducting broadband photometry of satellites. A small aperture telescope (Celestron CG-14, 35.6 cm aperture) was used to gain multiple night-long, high temporal resolution data sets of a limited number of geostationary satellites (Anik F1, Anik F1R, Anik G1, Echostar 17, Galaxy 11, and Intelsat 805). The results of the experiment demonstrate that small aperture telescopes can be highly effective for obtaining accurate photometric measurements of geostationary satellites. In the process some novel discoveries were made that cast doubt on the effi cacy of some of the previous approaches to obtaining and analysing photometric data. For example, it was discovered that satellite lightcurves vary to a significantly greater degree than has been generally recognised, and significant features such as oscillations were detected in some lightcurves with frequencies higher than would be detectable at temporal resolutions that have typically been employed in the past. Furthermore, these results suggest that high temporal resolution, simultaneous, multicolour observations may have significant utility in characterising or identifying satellites in some cases.

▼ Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people aged 65 years and over in western countries. As the senior population grows, it is expected that the incidence of AMD will increase proportionately. The putative protective role of macular pigment (MP) in the retina against actinic short-wave (SW) light damage and light-driven metabolic damage, both of which may contribute to the onset of AMD, supports the need for a non-invasive, valid, and accurate method that allows the in vivo measure of MP. Heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP) is the most commonly utilized method for this purpose. HFP is a psychophysical method that compares measures taken in the fovea (where MP is most heavily deposited) and in the parafovea (where MP is optically immeasurable) in order to obtain a measure of the macular pigment optical density (MPOD). Any method that relies on a comparison at different retinal loci relies upon the assumption that the underlying response mechanism has the same relative spectral sensitivity at both sites and that the mechanism responds in a linear manner under all measurement conditions. In this study the spatial, temporal and luminance parameters of the method are varied in order to test potential sources of non-linearity. The stimulus edge-effect which allows mapping of MPOD spatial distribution is explored. And, the often seen slight underestimate of MPOD at short waves when compared to a spectral MPOD template is examined. The results of this study indicate that across a wide range of stimulus parameters, often beyond a normal working range, the responding mechanism behaves in a univariant manner, i.e., linearly. The stimulus edge-effect holds almost perfectly to a retinal eccentricity of 1.0 degree, and the SW underestimate is well-described by the possible presence of two other inert SW-absorbing pigments. A conclusion that HFP is a valid and accurate measure of MPOD is supported by the results reported here. ▼ This dissertation describes the development and implementation of a computer-based photometric data acquisition system for the Mt Canopus telescope. The high-speed photometric system allows continuous acquisition of data, for up to —69 min with a maximum sample rate of 9.8 kHz, while providing a real time display of the counts. The system was thoroughly tested with a pulsing LED source and with observations of the Crab pulsar. The results from several observational programs, suited to the system's capabilities, are also presented. The observational programs involved a study of the DQ Her type cataclysmic variable EX Hydrae, a fast photometric study of geostationary spin-stabilised satellites, a monitoring program on SN1987a, and an occultation program which culminated in a successful observation of a Pluto occultation and the detection of an atmosphere on this planet. The Mark I version of the fast-photometer system was used for the photoelectric study program on the eclipsing cataclysmic variable EX Hya. This program demonstrated the continued secular decrease in the period of its 67 min modulation. The observed rate of change of the 67 min period implies a mass transfer rate of the order of —3x10-11Mo yr-1and a magnetic moment around 8x10 32G cm3 . Two variations in the eclipse timings are also identified. Firstly, one sees a long-term variation that has been fitted with an —20 yr period sinusoid. Secondly, one sees a short-term variation which is correlated with the phase of the 67 min cycle. This second variation has been interpreted in terms of the eclipse of an accretion column or arc in the region above the magnetic pole of the white dwarf. Supplementary to the photometric data, high time resolution spectroscopic data from an eclipse of EX Hya were obtained with the Anglo-Australian telescope. These data are compatible with the general spectral characteristics noted by other workers. The V/R ratio of the spectral lines, around orbital phase 098 = 0, is consistent with the eclipse of an accretion disk. A sharp peak in the equivalent width of the Balmer lines is seen at the time of the eclipse. It is comparable in width to the X-ray eclipses, and narrower than the optical eclipses. Finally, the accretion curtain model of EX Hya is shown to accommodate, in a qualitative sense, all the observational constraints that must be imposed on any model of the system.

▼ The open clusters NGC 2141, NGC 6791, NGC 6819 and NGC 7142, all suspected of having ages greater than 2 billion years (Gyr), were observed at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. The images were reduced using standard IRAF routines, and magnitudes for the stars were determined using DAOPHOT (Stetson, 1987). These data were used to construct colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for each cluster, as well as two-colour diagrams (J - K, V - K), (J - H, H - K) of the giants. Colour excesses were redetermined by comparing the optical CMD main sequences to semi-empirical ZAMS calibrations (VandenBerg and Poll, 1989; this work) and are as follows: E{B - V) = 0.32 ± 0.04, 0.23 ± 0.03, 0.11 ± 0.03 and 0.29 ± 0.04, for NGC 2141, NGC 6791, NGC 6819 and NGC 7142, respectively. Apparent distance moduli for the clusters listed above were found to be (m - M ) v = 13.93 ± 0.13, 13.52 ± 0.13, 12.10 ± 0.13 and 12.96 ± 0.16. The optical CMDs were compared to sets of theoretical isochrones to ascertain ages and test whether canonical or convective overshooting models best represent the data. It was found that isochrones which allowed for convective overshooting provided the best fits, resulting in ages of 2.5 Gyr, 10 Gyr, 2.5 Gyr and 2.5 Gyr for NGC 2141, NGC 6791, NGC 6819 and NGC 7142, respectively. Two sets of overshooting isochrones (Bertelli et al., 1994; Dowler and VandenBerg, 1996) yielded ages within 0.5 Gyr. The MAR method (Anthony-Twarog and Twarog, 1985) placed the three younger clusters at an approximate age of 3 Gyr. In theory, the two-colour diagrams may be used to distinguish between cluster giants and field stars. However, in practice this is not an easy task since the infrared observations are not always accurate enough to separate the cluster members and field stars. This was the case for these data, since a problem with the H magnitudes resulted in colours offset from what was expected. The infrared (V,V - K and K, V - K) CMDs were useful in defining the giant branch locus based on the position of cluster members. {V - K)o colours were computed for each giant suspected of being a member. These were used to determine effective temperatures and bolometric luminosities which in turn were used to produce an HR diagram for each cluster. These were compared to HR diagrams of other open and globular clusters (Houdashelt et al., 1992; Frogel et al., 1983), as well as evolutionary tracks (Bertelli et al., 1994). The giant branch loci of the near-solar abundance and metal-poor clusters were found to lie between those defined by the clusters M67 and 47 Tuc. The comparison between the cluster HR diagrams and evolutionary tracks indicated that the theoretical temperatures may be too hot. The new cluster results were plotted on the age-metallicity relation defined by Houdashelt et al.’s (1992) and Friel and Janes’ (1993) sample of open clusters, and confirmed the lack of correlation between these two quantities. ▼ An area photometer using a RETICON RA50x50 multi-diode array as the detector has been developed and used to observe the central regions of stellar systems. Computer programmes have been written to handle the recording of data and the subseguent analysis of images. A seguential image processing language called FIRM was developed for use with an IBM 370 under MTS. A theoretical analysis of the response of diode arrays to Gaussian star images shows that the light from a star can be integrated if the seeing diameter is greater than 2.0 times the diode centre to centre spacing. Aliasing at all freguencies is insignificant for any seeing diameter greater than about 2.5 diode spacings. Technigues for avoiding aliasing are discussed. Images of an area approximately 40" x 40" in the centre of the Sb galaxy NGC 4736(=M94) have been obtained through blue, visual and red filters. Subtraction of a simple, circularly symmetric model with King core radius 6".0 ± 0".5 reveals a small, bar-like central structure about 20" across. This central structure is aligned perpendicularly to the major axis of the galaxy and melds into previously photographed spiral structure. A bright point-like nucleus is also seen, but it does not stand out in the colour maps. ft sharp colour gradient exists at 10" radius. The reddest areas of the central region coincide roughly with patches of negative resi duals after model subtraction. A simple dynamical model is constructed for the inner region of NGC 4736, and it is proposed that two spiral systems exist in this galaxy, one inside the other with the inner system rotating more rapidly if it is a two-armed spiral. This model may also apply to other galaxies. A central mass to blue luminosity ratio of 2.4 to 3.6 is obtained for a range of model parameters. Observations of the X-ray emitting globular cluster NGC 7078 (=1115) reveal a number of red giants within 15" of the centre. A map of b-^-r instrumental colour shows that the nuclear cusp appears to be only a little redder than the main unresolved "background" population of the cluster, but the poor seeing does not allow resolution of the cusp within 2" of the cluster centre. The colour map confirms published spectroscopic results. There is very little radial colour variation when centred circular apertures are simulated.

▼ I analyze Spitzer Space Telescope observations of seven transiting hot Jupiters during the time of secondary eclipse, the portion of the planet’s orbit when it is behind the star from the point of view of a Solar System observer. For six of them, HAT-P-3b, HAT-P-4b, HAT-P-6b, HAT-P-8b, HAT-P-12b and XO-4b, I analyze broadband photometric light curves at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. I compare the resulting eclipse depths, which are a measure of the planets’ dayside emission, to model emergent spectra by Burrows et al. and Fortney et al. The atmosphere of XO-4b has a strong temperature inversion, HAT-P-6b has weak or no temperature inversion, HAT-P-8b has a non-inverted atmosphere. The models are inconclusive about the temperature structure of the atmospheres of HAT-P-3b and HAT-P-4b. I find that HAT-P-3b, HAT-P-4b and HAT-P-8b have relatively inefficient heat transport from their day sides to their night sides. The models suggest moderate to low heat transport for XO-4b and HAT-P-6b. I discuss the physical implications of my results in the context of theoretical and empirical hypotheses on correlations related to the temperature-pressure structures of the atmospheres and the efficiency of energy transfer to the night side of the planet. In particular, I focus on the idea by Knutson et al. that planets with chromospherically active host stars may in general not have a stratosphere-like temperature inversions, while a quiet host star may lead to an inverted atmosphere. Another hypothesis I examine is that by Cowan and Agol and Perna et al. who suggest that the hottest planets have a narrow range of permitted heat redistribution efficiencies and, thus, high day-night contrasts. The seventh object I study is HD 189733b. I examine the time series spectroscopy during 18 eclipses between wavelengths of 5 and 14 μm. This is the most extensive data set observed for the emission spectrum of any exoplanet to date. Some of these data sets have been analyzed in the past by Grillmair et al., however eight of them are examined here for the first time. I use the latest analysis techniques to remove the systematic effects from the spectral light curves, and measure the secondary eclipse depths as a function of wavelength. I compare the results with three emergent spectrum models I compute using a modified version of a radiative transfer code by Richardson et al., and with the best fit model by Burrows et al. that Grillmair et al. adopt. I exclude isothermal and gray atmospheres with a high degree of confidence and confirm the water feature detected by Grillmair et al. I also comment on the physical implications on HD 189733b’s atmosphere and how the results of the complex Burrows forward model compares with the simpler Richardson models that can be used for retrieval.
