▼ The intracratonic Canning Basin, Western Australia, contains three Palaeozoic petroleum systems (The Larapintine L2, Ordovician – Silurian; The Larapintine L3 and L4, Devonian – early Carboniferous; and the Gondwannan G1 and G2, late Carboniferous – Permian). The NW-SE oriented Fitzroy Trough and Gregory Sub-basin (separated only by the Jones Arch) are the regional source kitchens, and shelfal positions updip from the Fitzroy Trough are oil productive from the Larapintine L3 and L4 petroleum system in fields such as Blina and Sundown, and more recently the Ungani field. A lack of exploration drilling in comparable shelfal positions updip from the Gregory Sub-basin is perceived to account for the absence of similar hydrocarbon discoveries. Through the use of a newly reprocessed regional 2D seismic grid and an enhanced stratigraphic framework produced from well correlations and palaeogeographic reconstructions, it is demonstrated that elements of all of the three petroleum systems are present on the Betty Terrace, Balgo Terrace and within the Billiluna Sub-basin of the northeast Canning Basin. Good quality reservoirs such as the late Devonian Knobby Sandstone (averaging 20.6% porosity and 567 mD permeability), the Tournaisian Laurel Formation (featuring up to 22% porosity), members of Visean-Sakmarian Grant Group (up to 18.5% porosity and 1015 mD permeability), and the Sakmarian Poole Sandstone (in excess of 20% porosity) were intersected in well bores, tied to 2D seismic data and mapped throughout the study area. Stratigraphy with regional seal potential (including Laurel Formation shales, the Grant Group B member, shales of the mid-Carboniferous Anderson Formation and the Permian Noonkanbah Formation) are determined from exploration wells to be present across the project area. A regional geochemical source rock assessment indicates that the Permian Noonkanbah Formation is organically rich (2.17% TOC), and that the pre-Carboniferous stratigraphy (members of Anderson Formation, 0.14% TOC; Laurel Formation, 0.56% TOC; Devonian Gogo Formation, 0.14% TOC; and the Silurian Carribuddy Group Bongabinni Member, 0.13% TOC) are organically lean. The Llanvirn Goldwyer Formation (1.5% TOC) is regionally organically rich, though is unlikely to be found in a basinal palaeogeographic setting within the study area. Thermal maturity was investigated using 1D and 2D petroleum systems models, which determined that (1) the Noonkanbah Formation is immature, and (2) that the pre-Carboniferous source rocks are mature for hydrocarbon generation, reaching peak thermal maturity in the Triassic (200 Ma). 4-way dip closures, 3-way fault bound dip closures, and horst block trapping configurations were identified on 2D seismic, but an analysis of exploratory dry holes indicates that structural closures that developed in the Carboniferous were likely reconfigured during the Triassic Fitzroy Movement, where hydrocarbons leaked out of traps. ▼ Raukumara Basin lies beneath Raukumara Plain and Raukumara Peninsula, north-eastern North Island, New Zealand. Published work has established a megasequence seismic-stratigraphic framework for the basin, which contains an estimated sediment thickness of >13 km. Seismic surveys in 2007 and 2011 acquired 4,500 line km of high-quality seismic data. This study uses both the 2007 and 2011 survey and is the first study to map the four megasequences (RAU-MS-W, RAU-MS-X, RAU-MS-Y, and RAU-MS-Z) across the basin using the combined dataset. The basin evolved through four tectonic phases, with each megasequence relating to a phase: Gondwana margin subduction (RAU-MS-W; Cretaceous); passive margin burial (RAU-MS-X; Cretaceous-Oligocene); allochthon emplacement during inception of the Hikurangi subduction margin (RAU-MS-Y; Early Miocene); and subduction margin underplating, deformation and volcanism (RAU-MS-Z; Miocene-Recent). Petroleum source rocks are inferred to be correlatives of the Whangai and Waipawa Formations and possibly the Karekare Formation, mapped as sequences within RAU-MS-X. Reservoir rocks are Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene Sandstone and landslide facies (upper RAU-MS-X, RAU-MS-Y, and RAU-MS-Z). Seal units are mudstones that are inferred to be widespread in RAU-MS-X and RAU-MS-Z, and the basal detachment surface or internal faults within RAU-MS-Y. The critical moment for the petroleum system is within the Early Miocene, after emplacement of RAU-MS-Y and during initial deposition of RAU-MS-Z. The inception of tectonic activity during the Eocene–Early Miocene created sedimentary source areas for reservoir sandstones as topography and structures formed. Four play concepts were identified. An anticlinal play in RAU-MS-X has an inferred Eocene sandstone reservoir and a mudstone seal. An unconformity play, with truncation of RAU-MS-X against the base of RAU-MS-Y that juxtaposes a potential Oligocene sandstone reservoir against an Early Miocene fault seal. An allochthon play within RAU-MS-Y that has possible sandstone reservoir units of Cretaceous–Eocene age enhanced by fracture permeability, and sealed by an overlying marine mudstone of RAU-MS-Z. A basal sandstone play with Early Miocene sandstone or conglomerate reservoir at the base of RAU-MS-Z, channelled into and contained by troughs on the top surface of RAU-MS-Y, and sealed by mudstone. I suggest that Raukumara Basin is likely to contain all the elements of a petroleum system, but the qualities of reservoir and source rocks are identified as significant risks. The basin is unusual for New Zealand because the basin is history is inferred to be entirely marine, which may mean that source rocks could be oil-prone (type 2) and that oil: gas ratios may be higher than in other New Zealand petroleum provinces. Onshore oil seeps are consistent with this conclusion and suggest that the offshore region could be prospective. The basin is relatively slightly deformed, as compared to farther south and onshore, and may hence host large accumulations of petroleum. ▼ As part of an active plate boundary throughout the Neogene, the thermal evolution of the East Coast Basin along the Hikurangi margin reflects the transition from tectonic extension to convergence. Combining the stratigraphic (burial/exhumation) history of the region as recorded in the Oputouma-1 well with Apatite Fission Track (AFT) ages and track length distributions, and vitrinite reflection (Ro) results from well samples, I have assessed the tectonic framework of the basin incorporating improved models of plate motions, and the thermal effects of plate boundary evolution (e.g. heat flow effects of extension, subduction emplacement, thrusting). We have used a time-dependent numerical (finite-difference) thermal modeling approach that explicitly includes effects of crustal heat production distributions, variable thermal properties of different lithologies, burial and exhumation, regional extension prior to 30 Ma, and the effects of subduction emplacement and ongoing subduction from 25 Ma - present. The vertical section comprised of well samples extending more than 3.5 km below the surface provides substantial constraints on the range of viable tectonic and thermal histories for the basin. Model results indicate the following: (1) Once subduction begins beneath the Hawke’s Bay region, AFT ages and Ro values are locked-in. Modeling results place the timing of the start of subduction at ~ 25 Ma. (2) The level of organic maturation indicated by the Ro values in conjunction with AFT ages and track lengths requires a relatively high heat flow regime during the Eocene-Oligocene, consistent with the plate tectonic history of the region that implies that New Zealand was undergoing extension during that time. (3) Although there is stratigraphic evidence of Miocene burial and exhumation, little additional thermal maturation occurred during this time. Our thermal models indicate that most organic maturation and hydrocarbon production would occur prior to the ca. 25 Ma initiation of subduction, raising the question of whether appropriate reservoir structures and seals existed at that time.

A análise da matriz energética mundial, assim como a brasileira, nos mostra que o gás natural representará em breve um importante insumo energético favorecendo a balança de pagamentos nacional, visto que o gás poderá ser usado tanto para consumo interno, quanto para exportação. O aumento das reservas nacionais de hidrocarbonetos se deve ao desenvolvimento de tecnologias, que favoreceram o conhecimento das bacias brasileiras quanto ao seu potencial produtor de combustíveis fósseis, permitindo a descoberta de novas jazidas. O amadurecimento do mercado nacional quanto ao consumo de gás natural passa pela construção de uma infraestrutura robusta, eficiente e que possibilite a captação, o armazenamento e distribuição do mesmo. O Brasil tem todos os requisitos necessários para adentrar ao seleto grupo de países exportadores de hidrocarbonetos, a descoberta do Pré-sal tende a incrementar a importância do gás natural para o país. Ao final do trabalho são descritos cenários futuros (quanto o consumo de energéticos), onde se vê que o consumo de energia para os próximos anos crescerá a taxas superiores as das duas últimas décadas. Análise destes cenários permite antecipar o interesse de futuros investimentos no desenvolvimento do conhecimento geológico para áreas promissoras.

The analysis of global energy matrix, as well as Brazilian, shows that natural gas will soon represent an important source of energy promoting the national balance of payments, since the gas would be used for domestic consumption and export. The increase in national reserves of oil due to the development of technologies that promote knowledge of the brazilian basins as the potential producer of fossil fuels, allowing the discovery of new deposits. The maturing of the domestic market as the consumption of natural gas involves the construction of a robust infrastructure, efficient and enabling the capture, storage and distribution of the product. Brazil has all the necessary requirements to enter the select group of oil exporting countries, the discovery of pre-salt tends to increase the importance of natural gas to the country. At the end of the paper described future scenarios (about the consumption of energy), where we can see that the energy consumption for the coming years will increase faster than the last two decades. Analysis of these scenarios let anticipate the interest of future investments in the development of geological knowledge to promising areas.

▼ A triangle zone is a structure commonly found at the leading edge of a thrust belt, characterized by a triangular cross-section of thrust faults. In the Montana triangle zone, west-dipping thrust faults intersect east-dipping ones above a regional detachment fault. Most studies of triangle zones focus on the structure in a cross-sectional sense, but little work addresses variations along the trend. The Canadian Rocky Mountain triangle zone has long been a productive petroleum province, so understanding the southern extent of this zone, where it enters Montana, is of interest for economic purposes as well as geologic understanding. Previous studies have concluded that the triangle zone continues into Montana, and this study interprets the triangle zone an additional 25 km farther south. This area is, however, more complex than previously thought. The triangle zone in Montana undulates vertically in a system of culminations and depressions. The surface geology of the area was mapped in detail in the early 1960’s by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), but the subsurface interpretations were made before triangle zones were identified in the area. Multiple cross sections were created in this study to update these interpretations. Select areas from the USGS Comb Rock quadrangle in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, were studied in detail to locate, measure, and document a culmination of the triangle zone. Erosion of the culmination produced structural windows through the triangle zone, whereas the neighboring depressions preserve the overlying thrust plates. Strain accumulation in shale units, specifically the Marias River Shale, as well as thick igneous sills elevated the culmination. In addition, penetrative deformation styles and disharmonic folding were documented in three formations in the study area: the Telegraph Creek Formation, Marias River Shale, and Blackleaf Formation. This allowed for a new interpretation of triangle zone formation to be made that helps to explain the structurally thickened units that are commonly found near the apex of the blind thrust. This interpretation closely examined the geometries necessary to create a triangle zone and found a thrust angle discrepancy that can be accommodated by extra material being piled up on the thrust flat.

Petroleum geochemistry involves the applications of organic geochemistry to the study of origin, formation, migration, accumulation and alteration of hydrocarbons.Key concepts and applications of petroleum geochemistry include understanding the petroleum systems, biomarkers and stable isotopes for oil‐oil and oil‐source rock correlations and controls on secondary processes (e.g. biodegradation, water‐washing and migration‐contamination) altering the composition and usually the quality of petroleum.In this research, important concepts and novel techniques of petroleum geochemistry have been utilized for characterizing the source rocks, evaluating the thermal history of the source rocks, understanding the age (where possible), establishing the depositional environment and lithology of the source. More specifically, various innovative organic (biomarker and stable isotopes) and inorganic (trace elements) geochemical approaches were undertaken to establish source, age, thermal history and sedimentary depositional environments of petroleum systems in Western Australia and Western Canada petroleum basins.The aim of the study presented in Chapter 2 was to understand the enigmatic occurrence of crocetane (an irregular C20 isoprenoid), that is usuallyfound in sediments associated with gas hydrate settings and used as a molecularindicator for the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), in Devonian sediments and crude oils containing molecular indicators of photic zone euxinia (PZE).This study comprised a detailed molecular and isotopic study of crocetane and Green Sulfur Bacteria (GSB)‐derived carotenoids in Devonian sediments of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) covering a range of thermal maturities. In addition, a series of oils generated from Devonian source rocks of the basin were analysed for crocetane. Crocetane was found in ten sediments from the WCSB and in seven Devonian WCSB crude oils. Its abundance was found to increase with thermal maturity, whereas the components generated from C40 derived carotenoids of GSB decreased steadily. The preferred proposed natural product precursor for crocetane is thus GSB‐derived carotenoids. This was corroborated by their similar structural features and the δ13C value of combined crocetane and phytane in these samples. Based on the work presented in Chapter 2, it was concluded that crocetane can provide evidence for PZE conditions in highly mature sediments and crude oils of Devonian age.Application of δD values of individual hydrocarbons (isoprenoids and nalkanes) has a great potential to estimate the thermal maturity of sedimentary organic matter. ▼ The Niobrara Formation of the Denver Basin is an unconventional oil and gas drilling target composed of alternating chalk and marl units. These units act as the source, seal and trap for hydrocarbons generated in the organic rich marl beds of the Niobrara. Organic geochemical data, such as oil-to-source rock correlations, oil biomarkers and gas isotopes, indicate that the fluids accumulated within the reservoirs closely match the source rocks in type and maturity; therefore, this is a system of in-situ generation and accumulation as well as short-distance migration. In a system where migration is minimal, proximity to an effective source rock is a prerequisite for a productive well. With such a prerequisite, play delineation should begin with regional source rock maturity assessment. Historically, source rock maturity has been studied through programmed pyrolysis (such as Rock-Eval(TM)), vitrinite reflectance, log interpretation or basin modeling. Recently, a new pyrolysis instrument called the Source Rock Analyzer(TM) has come to market. With this new addition, questions of data congruence have arisen between the Rock-Eval(TM) and the Source Rock Analyzer(TM) that preclude combined data sets without further study. This work establishes the veracity of the data from the Source Rock Analyzer(TM) and compares its results to those of a Rock-Eval(TM) instrument using a suite of 103 source rock samples. The data trends between the two machines are compared and then applied to a regional source rock maturity evaluation of the Niobrara Formation in the Denver Basin. The test of data veracity shows that the S2 and Tmax parameters from the Source Rock Analyzer(TM) are comparable to those from the Rock-Eval(TM), showing good correlation and a nearly one-to-one relationship. The other parameters, S1 and S3 show similar trends but there is significant scatter in the data. The calculated parameters (hydrogen index, oxygen index, production index, and total organic carbon) are correlative but deviate significantly from a one-to-one relationship. In the regional source rock evaluation, new samples are analyzed deep within the basin as well as along a northeast-southwest trend stretching from Wattenberg Field to the Colorado-Nebraska border. The new analyses show that maturity along these trends is affected by a thermal anomaly that is evident in the modern-day thermal gradient. Through crossplotting, mapping and modeling it is shown that the onset of hydrocarbon maturity in the Niobrara is 432 degrees C Tmax and that hydrocarbon expulsion occurs between 438 degrees C and 443 degrees C Tmax. The study also shows that Niobrara production can be predicted by mapping the thermal maturity as well as free hydrocarbon anomalies within the basin. This thesis studies the North Aegean Sea sedimentary basins, focusing on Prinos – Kavala basin. Although the area has been partially explored for hydrocarbons in the early ’70s, and oil and gas fields have been discovered and developed since the ‘80s in Prinos – Kavala basin, the area is still considered today under-explored, as is the rest of the country. The current study aims to a geological understanding of the evolution of Prinos – Kavala basin, and the conditions that led to its active petroleum system. Then a question rises, whether Prinos basin is an analogue to the adjacent North Aegean basins, if they evolved similarly and if the same favorable conditions have led to additional active petroleum systems. The rather small Tertiary Prinos – Kavala basin has been studied using core samples from wells drilled in 4 different structures (fields and prospects) into the basin, which were tested and analyzed using well established methods of sedimentology, organic geochemistry, petrology, and the results were combined with well lithological data and wireline logs, and field observations from the area. The output was correlated to the basin stratigraphy, and seismic interpretation was done along the whole basin, on 2D and 3D data, using Petrel software. The palaeogeographic evolution model of the Prinos – Kavala basin, as well as the active petroleum system are herein discussed. The suggested petroleum system and evolutionary model are then applied to the adjacent North Aegean basins with the aim of exploring their hydrocarbon potentiality.

Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή η λεκάνη Πρίνου – Καβάλας, ως αποδεδειγμένης παραγωγικής ικανότητας λεκάνη αναφορικά με τους υδρογονάνθρακες (proven play), μελετήθηκε με χρήση μεθόδων ιζηματολογίας, πετρογραφίας, λιθο-στρωματογραφίας, γεωφυσικής και ανάλυσης ιζηματογενών λεκανών, οργανικής και ανόργανης γεωχημείας, και προέκυψε το μοντέλο παλαιογεωγραφικής εξέλιξης της λεκάνης, καθώς επίσης προσδιορίστηκε και το ενεργό πετρελαϊκό της σύστημα που λειτούργησε στην λεκάνη με αποτέλεσμα την δημιουργία οικονομικά εκμεταλλεύσιμων κοιτασμάτων υδρογονανθράκων. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό επιδιώκεται η κατανόηση της δημιουργίας των γεωλογικών δομών της λεκάνης, ο εντοπισμός των πηγών τροφοδοσίας των ιζημάτων, ο τύπος του οργανικού υλικού και των μητρικών πετρωμάτων, ο προσδιορισμός του βαθμού θερμικής ωρίμανσης του κηρογόνου, οι διαδρομές μετανάστευσης των υδρογονανθράκων και οι μηχανισμοί παγίδευσής τους στους ταμιευτήρες. Επίσης προτείνεται η τρισδιάστατη απεικόνιση της εξάπλωσης των μητρικών πετρωμάτων, των ταμιευτήρων και των καλυμμάτων στην λεκάνη, ενώ επιπλέον πραγματοποιείται συσχέτιση μεταξύ των πετρελαίων των διαφορετικών σχηματισμών και προσδιορίζεται η αλληλοσύνδεσή τους. ▼ Several resorcinarene and calixarene based receptors were synthesised with the overarching aim of developing selective hydrocarbon sensors for application in the petroleum exploration industry.Thioacetyl resorcinarenes functionalised at the upper rim with methoxy, propoxy and benzyloxy groups were synthesised, along with a methylene bridged cavitand. Similar hydroxy and methoxy resorcinarenes functionalised at the lower rim with decylsulfide groups were prepared, along with a p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene thiol derivative.The receptors were allowed to self-assemble on gold substrates, and the resulting surfaces were characterised by contact angle, polarised modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PMIRRAS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that all but one of the receptors form monolayers. The exception, a resorcinarene decyl sulfide, appears to form a bilayer or multilayers.AFM force spectroscopy was used to investigate the receptor properties of the monolayers by using tips functionalised with adamantyl, cyclohexyl and benzyl molecular probes. A quantity of a deep cavitand was obtained to use as a comparison to the shallower receptors synthesised.Specific interactions were observed between the benzyloxy and methylene cavitand monolayers and the adamantyl probes. These monolayers along with the methoxy resorcinarene monolayer also showed significant interactions with the cyclohexyl probes. These receptors present promising targets for further studies of the complexation behaviour of resorcinarene based receptors and cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons.All surfaces exhibited interactions with the benzyl probes. The propoxy resorcinarene and deep cavitand monolayers appear to show selectivity towards the benzyl probes with no interactions observed for the adamantyl or cyclohexyl probes.The binding of the monolayer was found to be influenced by not only the macrocylic receptor site, but also the monolayer structure. Evidence for this was provided by the difference in binding exhibited by the methoxy resorcinarene thiol monolayer and the methoxy resorcinarene decylsulfide monolayer.

▼ In this thesis a series of geophysical surveys are carried out on the geologically important and remote Svalbard using magnetotelluric imaging, to constrain better the geology particularly defining geothermal resources. Magnetotellurics (MT) relays on natural source time-varying electric and magnetic field data measured at the earth’s surface in order to derive the subsurface resistivity structure. As part of the thesis, broadband MT data are collected in central and northwestern Spitsbergen in the period range between 0.003 - 1000 s from nearly 80 stations distributed along five profiles of 6 - 42 km long. The new MT data have brought significant contributions to extend the existing crustal scale geological knowledge, which mostly inferred from surficial, seismic and gravity studies in the past. From the MT data, we derived 2D and 3D resistivity models for selected areas and enabled to image the structure of the near surface bedrock geology and crustal scale architecture. The 2D and 3D inversion results indicated reasonable agreement with previous geological data, models and well reflected tectonic histories. Within the Central Tertiary Basin a higher frequency of fractures, localized faults and thick intrusive dyke swarms are resolved in the sub-horizontal and less deformed Mesozoic plat- form cover deposits. The tectonic history of the Paleocene-Eocene fold-thrust belt structure in northwest Svalbard is well indicated in the MT data from the Brøgger peninsula as a deformed architecture. The MT data from this section imaged elegantly an interplay between repeated basement-involved fold-thrust structures and successive down-dropped strata along steeply dipping oblique-normal faults that created a horst/ridge and graben/depression systems. MT is sensitive to subsurface geothermal attributes, such as fluid and heat migration zones. In this respect, the new MT data have proposed locations that may favour technologically accessible geothermal potentials. Advisors/Committee Members: Birkelund, Yngve (advisor).

▼ This research aims to take an interdisciplinary approach to examine how two different strands of literature, sociology of risk and the Māori guardianship value of kaitiakitanga, can inform corporate, public and personal accountability in a conflict arena. This is not limited to economic accountability, but includes social, environmental and cultural impacts. Risk, accountability, and kaitiakitanga are deeply embedded in culture and socially constructed by actors within that culture. Furthermore, methods of managing accountability and risk are products of the prevailing culture within a society, including reporting, risk communication, and the precautionary principle. The conflict arena in this study is the engagement around deep sea petroleum exploration in Aotearoa New Zealand. This was selected because it is a relatively new practice in New Zealand and has caused significant controversy. As an overarching methodology, a critical discourse analysis has been used. Within critical discourse analysis, Renn’s (1992) arena framework has provided the investigative tool to examine communications among actors and how they relate to one another, and Beck’s (1992) risk society has been used as a lens to understand why actors behave in this manner. Conversations were held with vocal actors who are actively engaged in the deep sea petroleum exploration arena including industry and government agency representatives, activists, iwi members, city councillors, opposition MPs, local business owners and media in order to hear their stories and interpretations of the conflict. Additionally, documentary and media reviews were performed to contextualise and further develop findings. This research has uncovered the discourse tool woven throughout accountability, risk and environmental politics, which is the use of powerful story-lines. “Risk refers to uncertainty about and severity of the events and consequences (or outcomes) of an activity with respect to something that humans value” (Aven & Renn, 2009, p. 6) - or what could happen. Accountability is providing a credible story about what is happening now, what could happen next, how one will respond, and why an activity should or should not go ahead. The most significant contribution of this thesis is a broadly constructed interpretation of accountability for risk in a controversial, environmentally sensitive industry from a range of social and cultural perspectives. This research will also provide insights into how multi or transnational corporations and affected stakeholders engage with one another, and how this can be emulated or improved by all actors involved.

[pt] Estudos econômicos de áreas com indícios de hidrocarbonetos estão imersos em incertezas de diferentes naturezas (geológicas, de engenharia e econômicas). No início do estudo, aspectos da geologia, dos fluidos, das rochas e do reservatório só são conhecidos por métodos indiretos que fornecem informações imprecisas. A redução dessas incertezas é limitada pelos elevados custos de perfuração de poços que permitam testes diretos. Conseqüentemente, decisões de investimentos de exploração têm que ser tomadas sob risco motivando, assim, o desenvolvimento de métodos para a avaliação econômica probabilística de propriedades. O foco desta dissertação é a avaliação econômica probabilística de recursos petrolíferos, antes da perfuração do poço pioneiro. O cálculo do valor econômico de uma propriedade depende das estimativas dos perfis temporais de receitas e custos associados ao seu desenvolvimento e produção (D e P). A obtenção de tais elementos requer um projeto de D e P para a propriedade que, em função dos dados disponíveis, é menos detalhado do que um projeto de simulação multicelular. Nesta dissertação, uma metodologia de avaliação baseada em simulação de Monte Carlo é apresentada juntamente com uma implementação- protótipo. A realização das numerosas replicações, necessárias para se obter uma avaliação probabilística, se torna viável graças a um programa capaz de gerar o projeto de D e P automaticamente. Esse programa foi desenvolvido pela Petrobras com base em regras fornecidas por um especialista. Além da justificativa para a abordagem adotada, da descrição e implementação do método, são feitas considerações sobre distribuições de probabilidade para codificar incertezas e sobre os resultados dos testes iniciais do sistema protótipo.

[en] Economics studies of areas with indications of hydrocarbons are submerged in uncertainties of assorted natures (geological, of engineering and economical). At the start of the study, aspects concerning the geology, the fluids, the rocks and the reservoir are only known through indirect methods that yield imprecise information. The reduction of these uncertainties is limited by high costs of drilling wells that allow direct tests. Consequently, decisions on exploration investments have to be made under risk. This motivates the development of methods for probabilistic economic evaluation of properties. This dissertation addresses the probabilistic economic evaluation of petroleum resources, prior wildcat well drilling. Assessing the economic value of a property depends on estimates of incomes and costs time profiles associated to its development and production (D and P). Obtaining such elements requires a D and P project for the property that, due to the limited data available, is less detailed than a multi- cellular simulation project. In this thesis, a probabilistic evaluation methodology based on Monte Carlo simulation is presented along with a prototype implementation. O estudo de arenitos, calcarenitos e arenitos híbridos do Cretáceo Inferior (Neo-Aptiano ao Meso-Albiano) da Bacia de Jequitinhonha, margem leste Brasileira, compreendendo depósitos continentais fluvio-deltaicos a lacustres da fase rifte, e fluvio-deltaicos costeiros e de plataforma mista siliciclástico-carbonática da fase transicional a drifte, demonstra que a distribuição das alterações diagenéticas e correspondente evolução da qualidade de reservatório podem ser preditas dentro de um contexto de estratigrafia de seqüências. Dados de poços (descrições de testemunhos e perfis elétricos), descrição petrográfica de laminas delgadas, e análises petrofísicas de porosidade e permeabilidade, foram integrados de modo a identificar e avaliar os aspectos genéticos dos parâmetros que controlam os padrões diagenéticos, e, por conseguinte, a qualidade de reservatório dos intervalos estudados. Os resultados desse estudo são relevantes para a exploração de bacias de margem passiva do tipo Atlântico. Foi demonstrada a influëncia de fatores deposicionais (i.e fácies sedimentares) e composição detrítica original (i.e. proveniência) na evolução diagenética, permitindo estimar e predizer a distribuição da qualidade e heterogeneidade de reservatório dos intervalos estudados. A integração dos dados e posterior avaliação da qualidade de reservatório desenvolvida nesse estudo foi baseada no conceito de petrofácies de reservatório, o qual consiste no agrupamento de amostras com base nos principais atributos responsáveis pela qualidade de reservatório, tais como composição primária, estruturas deposicionais, granulometria, seleção, alterações diagenéticas mais influentes na redução ou preservação da porosidade e permeabilidade originais, tipos e distribuição de poros, etc.. Essa dissertação demonstra que o conceito de petrofácies de reservatório que permite o reconhecimento sistemático dos atributos petrográficos que controlam as características (i.e. assinaturas) petrofísicas e geofísicas, bem como a redução dos riscos exploratórios.

A study of the fluvial, deltaic, and shallow-marine siliciclastic sandstones, calcarenites and hybrid arenites of Lower Cretaceous (Late Aptian to Early Albian) rift to early drift phase from the Jequitinhonha Basin, eastern Brazilian margin, reveals that the distribution of diagenetic alterations and of related reservoir quality evolution can be constrained within a sequence stratigraphic framework. Description of cores, wireline logs, thin sections, and petrophysical porosity and permeability analyses were integrated in order to unravel the genetic aspects that controlled the complex patterns of diagenesis of these rocks, and hence their reservoir quality evolution. The results of this study are relevant to the exploration of rift and an early drift phase of Atlantic-type passive margin basins, and demonstrate the influence of depositional factors such as sedimentary facies and detrital composition (provenance) on diagenetic and reservoir evolution, with application to the prediction of reservoir quality…
