▼ M.Phil.
All of us have experienced some kind of synchronicity before. An example of this phenomenon would be thinking of a friend and receiving a phone call from that friend at that time. The people you meet or simply run into on the street; the shirt that someone you walk by is wearing; the license plate or bumper sticker of the car in front of you — all could be examples of synchronicity. It can range from minor incidents to those that have a profound impact on our lives. The problem is that many of us do not understand the concept of synchronicity and how to utilize it in our journey to personal leadership. Not everybody is comfortable with the idea that the universe is giving us guidance. Often people have misconceptions regarding the synchronicity phenomenon and therefore dismiss it as mere chance while other believes that it is dark and evil. The general aim of the study was to get a better understanding of the concept of synchronicity and the importance thereof the people's lives. Ways of enhancing people's awareness of synchronicity was to be explored to assist them in their journey to purpose and meaning. Specific aims were set in order to achieve the general aim, namely to answer the following questions: "What is synchronicity?" and " What is the contribution of synchronicity towards personal leadership?" as well as "How can people enhance their awareness of synchronicity?" The research strategy of this study is characterized as explorative, descriptive and hermeneutic. The research methods used included word and concept analysis and literature study. On the question of "What is synchronicity?" it was found in chapter two that synchronicities are forces that come together in time and space, providing just what is needed. The occurrence strikes the participants as special, unexpected, or unexplainable by normal cause-and-effect rationales. The effect of synchronicity on the psyche is to trigger awareness that maybe a greater — or even divine — purpose is at work. It was discovered that the theory on synchronicity was the brainchild of C.G. Jung and that different types of synchronicity can be identified. The explanation of the background of the theory as well as the different types was found to enhance awareness and understanding of the concept of synchronicity. The question of "what is the contribution of synchronicity towards personal leadership?" was answered in chapter three. It was found that personal leadership is a value-based, principle-centered, inside-out approach to gaining control of one's life and living a happy and fulfilled life. It is based on the knowledge of who one is, where one currently is, and where one is going. A personal leader needs to develop in a balanced and holistic manner. Therefore all the individual's dimensions such as the spiritual, physical, mental and social/emotional dimensions should be improved. It was discovered that synchronicity has a definite contribution towards personal leadership, specifically towards the spiritual, physical, social/emotional and mental…

▼ The study deals with Zulu names of people as a prominent culture
trait of the Zulus.
It is a universal pattern of culture that every newly born child
IS given a name to identify his nationality, sex and also his
personality from any other human being. Although this is
common in all rlatlons, each nation has its own unique concept
of dOIng it. For example in western countries names are maintained
and used In the family generation, that is why we always
hear of Elizabeth 11, George V, King Edward VIII etc.
As a matter of fact the Zulus, like other nations, follow their
own concept In naming their children. With them every person
has a number of different names by which he/she is known at
home and In the outside world. These names include the first
name (which IS given to him/her at his/her birth or a few days
after birth) ,his/her clan name and also other additional names
he/she acquires as he/she grows up. These names are all given
from a particular point of view and sometimes with a particular
purpose In accordance with Zulu culture. These names are a
subject of this paper.

The purpose of this research was to establish principles that
Financial Planners could use to improve service delivery to the
individual. In broad terms this is known as practice management and
this research attempted to develop a greater understanding of
practice management and provide a basis for further research on the
subject. To do this in a meaningful way the research had two
structured phases. The first phase was a theoretical study that
provided the basis for the design of a research instrument. The
second phase was an empirical study that was done on the responses
received on the research instrument to establish principles of
practice management. The research successfully identified four
components and twenty principles of practice management, as well as
three demographic drivers of income and succeeded in meeting the
research objectives.

▼ There is a rich body of literature that details the
effects therapists have on their patients. Little attention has,
however, been given to the impact of training and working as a
professional psychologist on the close
personal relationships (CPR)
of practitioners. The aim of this study was to explore the
subjective experience of the impact of clinical psychology training
on trainee psychologists' intrapersonal development and
subsequently their CPR in the South African context. Three key
relationships the trainees' relationships with their family,
friends and romantic partners were the focus of the research. Seven
second year clinical psychology master's students were selected
using non-probability, purposive sampling to participate in
individual semi-structured interviews. Interviews were recorded,
transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was used to identify and
analyse themes in the data both within and across the seven
interviews. Six main themes were identified and the findings
indicate the participants perceive the impact of training on their
CPR to be primarily beneficial. This is despite experiencing
difficulties in some of their relationships as a result of
training. Relationships with romantic partners benefitted from
improved communication and some became deeper and more meaningful,
although two ended. Participants faced both gains and losses in
terms of friends while the intensity and shared experience of
training rapidly made classmate relationships extremely important
and close. Some participants gained a better understanding of
family members and their family's functioning. Training also opened
up some relationships by providing a point of connection between
certain participants and their parents. The participants rely
significantly on all their CPR for social support but support from
family is most salient. Finally some implications for training were
evoked by the interwoven nature of
personal and professional
development demonstrated by the study.

▼ When rugby became professional in 1995, both the game and the social and financial position of the players changed (Basson, 2003). Players started to train full-time and earned annual salaries (Goldman& Johns, 2009). Due to the transition from amateur to professional status, rugby players needed to make adequate personal financial management decisions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the personal financial management attitudes and practices of South African rugby players. Previous research about personal financial management largely focussed on the general public, and did not focus on South African rugby players. Rugby is a professional sport where players earn money from a young age. It is expected of rugby players to make adequate personal financial decisions from as early as 19 years old. The literature review provided an overview of personal financial management and a discussion on the various components that should be included in personal financial management. A framework for this study was developed. The framework used these components as the base for the personal financial attitudes and practices and how it relates to the demographics of the respondents. Three hypotheses were also formulated based on the literature overview and framework. The objectives of this study were achieved by adopting a quantitative research methodology. A convenience sample of 132 rugby players was drawn for this study. Rugby players from NMMU Madibaz, Eastern Province Rugby Union (EP), South Western Districts Rugby Union (SWD) and Sharks Rugby Union participated in this study. The results of the empirical survey showed that respondents have positive attitudes towards the importance of budgeting, retirement planning, risk management, debt management and investment and the importance of employing a financial planner. On the other hand the personal financial management practices of the respondents in this study can be described as weak. From the results of the empirical survey it is clear that the respondents have weak practices towards the majority of the personal financial management practices. Only one of the three hypotheses was accepted namely that there is a relationship between the demographics of rugby players and their personal financial practices. There is no relationship between personal financial management attitudes and personal financial management practices of South African rugby players and that there is also no relationship between demographic variables and personal financial management attitudes of South African rugby players. This study has provided insight into the personal financial management attitudes and practices of South African rugby players. Valuable information was obtained that could help to address the personal financial management needs of rugby players.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Financial independence is what most people strive for; however, world trends
indicate that it eludes the majority of the population. In South Africa, financial
independence figures, especially at retirement, range disconcertingly between 6%
and 10%. Numerous factors contribute to and influence financial independence, such
as the current economic climate, personality characteristics and attitudes and
behaviour. In an attempt to understand the complexity of the interplay between
finance and psychology, this research explores a commercial product, the
Moneymax Profile (MMP), and endeavours to relate it to scientific literature that will
contribute to the understanding of how personality characteristics and attitudes and
behaviours toward money will influence financial independence.
An ex post facto correlational research design was employed in this exploratory
quantitative study (n = 67). The Financial Independence Scale (FIScale) was
constructed for the purposes of the study. The concept of optimal financial attitudes
and behaviour (OFAB) was developed and defined as measurable attitudes and
behaviour that maximise the likelihood that individuals will experience financial
security or independence. OFAB was measured by subscales of personality (locus of
control, Type A/B personality, time orientation) and financial attitudes and behaviour
(for example budgeting, social referents, financial discipline, control of investments).
Results indicated that locus of control, time orientation, budgeting, social referents
and control of investment were reliable measures of OFAB. The Moneymax traits
with a moderate correlation that contributed significantly to OFAB were pride,
emotionality, confidence, contentment, spending and trust. The traits of involvement,
power and risk taking were significant, but the relationship with OFAB was weak.
The remaining traits of altruism, work ethic, self-determination and reflectivity held
little statistical value. The principle contributors to an individual’s financial habits and
current status were noted to be education level, unexpected circumstances and
trusting others. The lack of available psychometric properties for the MMP and the small sample
were major limitations of this study. The disciplines of economics and psychology
would do well to continue working together in an effort to comprehend money and
money personality.

▼ This study investigates the use of
personal description as an investigation technique to identify suspects. The study entails qualitative data obtained from interviews with investigators, literature, as well as case studies. The study found that
personal description can be used as an investigation technique to identify suspects.
There are eight techniques that the investigator should apply in order to identify suspects or perpetrators of a criminal act. To conduct effective investigation, it is important for the criminal investigators to be familiar with the techniques of identification and the application thereof.
The description of offenders plays an important role as far as arresting offenders is concerned. The methods used - or to be used - by investigators to describe a person were also discussed. It is important that the investigators should work with other government departments, private investigators and security officials, to implement this technique in order to identify and arrest offenders.

traditional educator-centred teaching to learner-centred teaching in Out-comes Based Education
requires that both educators and learners be in command of a range of communication strategies in
order to construct meaning in the real-world social contexts. I also hi-light the importance of verbal
as well as nonverbal communication skills in relation to intra-
personal, and interpersonal
communication. I encapsulate the vision of teachers and learners who are knowledgeable and
multi-faceted, sensitive to environmental issues and able to respond to and act upon the many
challenges that society presents. With this in mind I examine an array of forms of communication
that learners and educators must be in command of to ensure the success of OBE in the classroom
situation. I stress the need for knowledge of verbal as well as nonverbal communication skills to
give learners the confidence they need in the social environment In surveying organisational communication I also look at the challenges that educators face in the implementation of the new curriculum
I will also reveal that OBE requires a cooperative method of teaching, which allows for democracy in the foundation phase classroom. Learners are allowed to contribute freely in group and class discussions about their daily life experiences and to become independent, literate, numerate and multi-skilled individuals of society. I further recommend a model of organisational communication for foundation phase learning taking into account the kind of learner that is envisaged in OBE.

▼ Despite the importance of retirement planning, many South Africans have been documented as reaching retirement age without adequate retirement funding. A vast amount of research has been conducted on how proper retirement planning can be beneficial for individuals; however, there has been a lack of attention given to researching the retirement planning of black individuals in South Africa. Thus, the primary objective of this study was to identify, investigate and empirically test which factors influence retirement planning, and which aspects of retirement planning influence the retirement funding adequacy of black individuals. After a comprehensive literature review was undertaken on the factors influencing the retirement planning and retirement funding adequacy of individuals, the following independent variables were identified as influencing the mediating variable (Aspects of retirement planning) and the dependent variable (Retirement funding adequacy) in this study: • Financial literacy; • The role of the financial planner; • Family support structure; and • Health status. These independent variables were selected to construct a hypothesised model and research hypotheses, as they have been identified as the prominent factors that influence the retirement planning of black South Africans. Furthermore, these independent variables were used in determining whether they have an influence on the Aspects of retirement planning (incorporating Retirement provisions, Retirement attitudes and Retirement intentions) and, ultimately, improve the Retirement funding adequacy of individuals. In order to establish the influence of the aspects of retirement planning on the retirement funding adequacy of individuals, an empirical investigation was undertaken. A measuring instrument, in the form of a questionnaire, was compiled from secondary literature sources. The respondents were identified though a mixed sampling approach, whereby stratified sampling and convenience sampling were used to attain 441 usable questionnaires that were subjected to statistical analyses. Descriptive statistics, in the form of frequency distributions, were used to summarise Section A and Section B of the measuring instrument. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument were confirmed by means of exploratory factor analyses (EFA), and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were also calculated for this purpose. As a result of conducting the EFA, two independent variables (Family support structure and Health status) loaded together, and the factor was renamed accordingly. From the EFA, the independent variables that emerged were The role of the financial planner, Family, health, and financial well-being, and Financial literacy. Furthermore, the EFA revealed that three mediating variables emerged from the mediating variable Aspects of retirement planning. These three mediating variables were consequently named Retirement intentions, Retirement attitudes, and Retirement provisions. There were no eliminated variables in this study. Based on the results of…

▼ Previous literature on the social dynamics of network
creation in enterprises has drawn a sharp division between the
utility of
personal and professional networks. This has been
particularly marked in social network analysis of born-global SMEs
operating in emerging markets and seeking to internationalise.
Using the case study of International Housing Solutions (Pty) Ltd
(IHS) – a born global SME with both a global and a regional network
– this research creates a deeper and more nuanced understanding of
what such networks look like, what human factors are key to their
operation, and what the relative importance is of the
personal and

research design including network mapping and both qualitative and
quantitative analysis of questionnaire responses from 35
participants in the IHS network, providing both hard data and rich
qualitative insights into the ingredients and processes required
for effective networking in such an enterprise. The results provide
robust evidence for crossover between professional and
personal
networking activities; both are equally relevant in enabling the
born-global SME to grow networks, increase innovation and enter
otherwise impenetrable markets. Though the weighting of networking
attributes is marginally different – for
personal networks, the key
attributes are advice, trust, friendship and communication; for
professional networks, knowledge and referrals – in practice, both
the
personal and the professional are assimilated into a single
complex of network activity and cannot be viewed in isolation. The
research thus contributes innovative findings to a hitherto
under-researched aspect of networking in the born-global

The impact of

▼ Traditionally the father of the home was expected to
be the provider and breadwinner of the family whilst the mother's
role was nurturer and caretaker of the children. However, in modern
society with mothers entering the workplace the role of the father
has been impacted considerably. Fathers are now expected to
actively participate in the rearing and caring of the children
whilst upholding their commitment as a co-provider of their
children as well. In modern society, fathers are challenged to
balance work and family obligations. The workplace has generally
not been sympathetic to the dual responsibilities that employed
fathers have. Fathers would not always receive the same kind of
compassionate support from their employers when it comes to their
obligations with regards to the needs of their children as their
female colleagues would. However, in recent years, workplaces are
progressively recognising that fathers too may find it difficult to
balance their work and family life. The goal of the study was to
determine the impact of the work and
personal life challenges of
the fathers employed at a factory in the Western Cape. The two
theoretical frameworks that guide this study are the General
Systems Theory and Role Theory. Ninety-seven (97) working fathers
were purposively selected by means of the non-probability sampling
method. The research approach to this study was the quantitative
approach. The study sought to immediately provide numerical data
that would scientifically describe and explain the phenomena. The
researcher used the randomised cross sectional survey design as
this design is appropriate for the utilisation of a questionnaire
that allows the researcher to examine several groups of fathers at
one point in time. Responses were done on a 5-point Likert scale
ranging from strongly disagree, disagree, neither agree or
disagree, strongly agree and agree. The research results suggest
that there is a correlation between the absenteeism in their
children's lives of the fathers that were surveyed and the current
trend of absent fathers in South Africa. The survey also supports
the academic literature that a father's identity is embedded in
being able to provide for his family and that fathers from a lower
economic status are less likely to reside with their children.
Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that
working fathers generally do not implement their right to take
leave from their workplace after the birth of their children. The
research results also showed that work-life challenges can
negatively impact fathers employed in a factory as a workplace in
the Western Cape; however, the research also revealed that
workplaces that render Employee Assistance Programmes to their
workforce can significantly mitigate that impact. Drawing on the
results of this study, it is recommended that further research be
conducted with regard to fatherhood policies within the workplace.
Workplace policies specifically designed to address the needs of
the working father would allow the working father to…

▼ The thesis underpinning this dissertation was that, as in previous times of major social and
historical change, naming practices amongst the Zulu have undergone significant changes since
the advent in 1994 of a democratic govemment in South Africa. Since the democratisation process
entails freedom for all, it was suspected that a differentiation process was developing within the
Zulu group itself and that there were at least three broad economic groups: rural, 'rich-urban', and
'poor urban'. Fieldwork was undertaken in terms of these groups and the data obtained, analysed,
and then compared and contrasted in order to identify differences and similarities and to measure
shift away from traditional practices.
What is apparent from the research is that while there is clear evidence of shift, the shifts that do
exist, differ from group to group. The group which shows the least change is the rural, as was
expected. The urban groups are fragmented into several sub-groups, most of whom differ from
one another in their motivations for the changes they are making, although these seldom appear
to have been made consciously.

▼ South Africa has a poor savings culture. This means that South Africans do not save enough income for a later stage resulting in a relative large number of South African consumers living in debt and using more credit than what they have saved. Almost half of the South African consumers were in debt during the year 2010 and had a negative credit record. Thus consumers in South Africa are not living only in poor conditions but are also open to exploitation by the informal economy. Lenders in the informal economy are known as ‘loan sharks’ because they charge consumers interest rates of between 40 and 60 percent. This is because low income consumers have less access to savings products and credit facilities from the formal economy. These factors are more prevalent among the black consumers, as they use informal credit providers. The sources of credit for black consumers in the informal market are social networks such as friends and family. Furthermore, black consumers have low levels of knowledge regarding issues such as bad debts. Black consumers are also more likely to experience financial problems than other racial groups. This means that black consumers may need to improve their levels of financial knowledge, financial skills and adopt positive financial attitudes to manage their financial problems without obtaining more debt. Thus, financial education may be the way of ensuring that black consumers improve their financial decision-making ability and their financial behaviour. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between financial literacy, financial inclusion and financial behaviour among the black community in Nelson Mandela Bay. To achieve the purpose of this study, a literature review was conducted on financial literacy, financial education, financial inclusion and financial behaviour. This was followed by an empirical investigation to establish the relationships between financial literacy, financial inclusion and financial behaviour. In this study, a quantitative research approach was adopted as necessitated by the purpose of this study and also to be able to collect a vast amount of perceptions from the black community. The sample of this study consisted of low to middle income black consumers living in Nelson Mandela Bay.

▼ The increasing number of devices owned by a single user makes it increasingly difficult to access, organise and visualise personal information (PI), i.e. documents and media, across these devices. The primary method that is currently used to organise and visualise PI is the hierarchical folder structure, which is a familiar and widely used means to manage PI. However, this hierarchy does not effectively support personal information management (PIM) across multiple devices. Current solutions, such as the Personal Information Dashboard and Stuff I’ve Seen, do not support PIM across multiple devices. Alternative PIM tools, such as Dropbox and TeamViewer, attempt to provide a means of accessing PI across multiple devices, but these solutions also suffer from several limitations. The aim of this research was to investigate to what extent enhanced information visualisation (IV) techniques could be used to support accessing PI across multiple devices. An interview study was conducted to identify how PI is currently managed across multiple devices. This interview study further motivated the need for a tool to support visualising PI across multiple devices and identified requirements for such an IV tool. Several suitable IV techniques were selected and enhanced to support PIM across multiple devices. These techniques comprised an Overview using a nested circles layout, a Tag Cloud and a Partition Layout, which used a novel set-based technique. A prototype, called MyPSI, was designed and implemented incorporating these enhanced IV techniques. The requirements and design of the MyPSI prototype were validated using a conceptual walkthrough. The design of the MyPSI prototype was initially implemented for a desktop or laptop device with mouse-based interaction. A sample personal space of information (PSI) was used to evaluate the prototype in a controlled user study. The user study was used to identify any usability problems with the MyPSI prototype. The results were highly positive and the participants agreed that such a tool could be useful in future. No major problems were identified with the prototype. The MyPSI prototype was then implemented on a mobile device, specifically an Android tablet device, using a similar design, but supporting touch-based interaction. Users were allowed to upload their own PSI using Dropbox, which was visualised by the MyPSI prototype. A field study was conducted following the Multi-dimensional In-depth Long-term Case Studies approach specifically designed for IV evaluation. The field study was conducted over a two-week period, evaluating both the desktop and mobile versions of the MyPSI prototype. Both versions received positive results, but the desktop version was slightly preferred over the mobile version, mainly due to familiarity and problems experienced with the mobile implementation. Design recommendations were derived to inform future designs of IV tools to support accessing PI across multiple devices. This research has shown that IV techniques can be enhanced to effectively support…

▼ South Africa has one of the highest postgraduate dropout rates in the world. One of the main contributing factors to the high number of unfinished Master’s and Doctorate degrees is incomplete theses and dissertations. Frequently postgraduate students complete all other course requirements, but are unable to complete the independent research component. Ethics clearance was obtained from the Senate research committee at UWC. This study used a systematic review methodology to identify appropriate literature on the
personal characteristics and demographic variables of postgraduate research students and supervisors and the impact that these variables have on completion rates. The study evaluated the literature for methodological quality in order to enable comprehensive identification, evaluation and meta-synthesis of the current best evidence regarding
personal and demographic factors which may affect the supervisory relationship and help or hinder completion rates. This resulted in an evidence base of filtered information which can be used by individuals, institutions of higher education, and government or non-government organisations to inform individual practice, specialised training programmes and general psychoeducation. The results indicated that there is empirical evidence from good quality research that
personal and demographic variables impact the working alliance between students and supervisors, and ultimately the completion of the research. Race, gender, spirituality, isolation, and socio-economic status were among the more prominent factors identified.

▼ Since the early 1990s entrepreneurship education has experienced a significant
interest and growth in South Africa, due to the fact that it plays a very important part
in the success of businesses, whether it is a new or an existing business venture.
Corporate entrepreneurship can be defined as the development of new ideas and
opportunities within a large organisation and is characterized by individuals who are
energetic, creative, innovative, self-confident and take calculated risks.
When looking at the entrepreneurial orientation variables, Autonomy,
Innovativeness, Risk-taking, Pro-Activeness and Competitive aggressiveness
in any organisation, they require an acceptable climate to ensure that each
dimension prosper. The line, middle and senior managers play an important role in
entrepreneurial actions, whether it is part of creating the climate or driving the
process once initiated. Entrepreneurial success factors such as creativity, innovation,
risk orientation, leadership, good human relations, a positive attitude and
perseverance, are all attributes of successful entrepreneurs.
The primary research focus of this study has been to investigate the influence of
entrepreneurial orientation variables (Autonomy, Innovativeness, Risk-taking, Pro-
Activeness and Competitive aggressiveness) on the perceived success in a personal
protective equipment organisation in South Africa. For the purpose of this study, the
business success has been measured by means of two dependent variables namely
Business growth and Business development and improvement.
An empirical study has been conducted by using a questionnaire that measured five
dimensions regarding entrepreneurial orientation. Data from 42 participants have
been collected and analysed, and the results indicate that the organisation have
certain aspects of entrepreneurial orientation present.
The results show that the managers in the personal protective equipment business
perceived that the entrepreneurial orientation variable Innovativeness have a
positive influence on their Business Growth. An important relationship between the
independent variable Innovativeness and the dependent variable Business
development and improvement has been found to exist.
Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial orientation are more than just vibrant words in
the industry; they play important roles in the survival and growth of organisations. It is
also crucial to understand that the correct climate needs to be fostered within the
organisation to ensure that all the various aspects of corporate entrepreneurship are
achieved. The organisation will reap greater benefits that could contribute to the
business staying the leader in the industry, being more competitive, creating new
ventures, and introducing new products and services.
The area of significant concern for the organisation is a low or poor tolerance for risktaking.
Practical recommendations, suggestions and an action plan are presented in
order to improve the entrepreneurial climate of the…

▼ Adventure based experiential learning programmes (AEPs) are certainly nothing new (Louw et al., 2007). Its inception can be traced back as far as Plato after which it was revised as a result of the contributions of Kurt Hahn, the German educationalist and organisations such as Outward Bound (Hattie et al., 1997). The positive contribution to personal- and life effectiveness as a result of participation in AEPs and which adventure enthusiasts have laid claim to, has been in existence since the start of Outward Bound in 1942 (Neill, 2000:3). Witt and Crompton (1996) further emphasised value of AEPs by stating that they are internationally recognised as a scientific method that assist in developing the life effectiveness of adolescents and adults.
One of the most critical challenges for adventure based experiential learning organisations in the 21st century is the development of applicable AEPs for less privileged groups, according to Neill and Flory (2000a). High school pupils in this day and age pose much bigger challenges to educational institutions. They are more diverse in terms of age, race, socio-economic status, culture, sex, stability, attitudes and values (Upcraft, 1993). To adhere to the above mentioned challenges Kimball and Bacon (1993) recommend AEPs that take place in nature as this serves as a therapy for the gaps in the current educational- and community systems.
The purpose of this study was to obtain scientific information regarding the contribution of an adventure based experiential learning program (AEP1) to the improvement of the life- and personal effectiveness of black high school pupils, specifically in light of the current transformation- and empowerment processes. Black high school students were specifically used in this study because no results regarding their participation in AEPs have been found in South Africa. The results of this study will deliver important scientific information regarding this topic, especially in light of the current focus on transformation and empowerment.
The test subject consisted of an experimental- (20 boys and 20 girls) and a control group (20 boys and 20 girls) aged between twelve and seventeen years with an average age of 14.5. The experimental group participated in a five day AEP in the Vredefort Dome in the North West province.
The study is conducted in the form of a quantitative pre-test post-test design (Thomas & Nelson, 1996:321-322). The questionnaires were administered before, directly after and six months after the initial evaluation to determine the immediate and long term effect thereof. To measure life effectiveness, use was made of the Life Effectiveness Questionnaire (LEQ-H) (Neill et al., 1997:6) with a Cronbach Alpha-value of between 0.78 and 0.93 to measure the development of life effectiveness of the group. The instrument focuses on psychological and behavioural aspects that are key components of life effectiveness. The LEQ-H consists of 24 questions and assesses the following dimensions: achievement motivation, active initiative,…

▼ The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a strategic management tool that provides the manager with a clear and concise picture of the business's health and progress in reaching the goals of the business (Norton & Kaplan, 1992: 71-79). The BSC is a set of financial and non-financial measures relating to a company's critical success factors. Of late the BSC was also used as a personal development tool – measuring the individual's performance towards set personal growth targets. The BSC process has been part of ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works for many years. This process can add great value to a company if managed effectively- the question is thus: is the BSC effectively implemented in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works? It was decided to conduct a study to determine the status of the BSC with one main objective and two secondary objectives, namely to –
• establish whether ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works is effectively using the
BSC tool as a performance measurement and a personal development tool (main objective);
• determine if there is a difference between the effective implementation of the
BSC as a performance management and personal development tool within the different business units within ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works. These units are
Iron Making, Steel Making, Rolling, Engineering and Staff (Secondary objective 1): and
• determine if there is a difference between the effective implementation of the
BSC as a performance management and personal development tool between different role gradings (these roles are defined as E, F and G roles) in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works (Secondary objective 2). An empirical study was conducted in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works. A questionnaire was used as the measuring instrument and was issued via the HR Department to a target group of 724 employees. The questionnaires consisted of 25 questions divided into 2 sections to test both the effectiveness of the BSC as a performance management tool and a personal development tool. To analyse the data, descriptive statistics and frequency distributions were used and calculated in Microsoft PHStat. From these results the following conclusions were drawn.
• The BSC process is well entrenched in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works, but lacks overall effectiveness;
• The BSC does encourage people to self-develop, but development plans are lacking, not enough time for training is given and managers must show a real intent to develop their people. From the study and the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations were made.
• Address the issue of mistrust between the employees and their supervisory management.
• Managers should make allowance for individuals to make mistakes.
• Encourage innovation in the organisation.
• More effort should be applied to translate the company strategic objectives into workable (and measurable) KPI 's at the lower levels of the organisation.
• ArcelorMittal should make a concerned effort to allow more time for training and self-development during normal working hours.

▼ Nursing students are part of the larger nursing community, and their well-being is closely related to that of the community in which they function. Various reports indicate that the South African nursing profession is in crisis due to staff shortages and poor working conditions. Insufficient numbers of registered nurses are entering the profession, and the resultant work pressure, especially for nurses working in the public sector, increases the risk of burnout. A pressing need exists for nursing students to graduate and enter the workforce to alleviate the serious staff shortage. The aim of the research was to explore the different dimensions of well-being as described by nursing students during their nursing studies. A purposive and availability sample was used to explore the experiences of first-year students of the School of Nursing Science at the North-West University during 2008. Qualitative data-gathering methods included in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, personal diaries and visual data-gathering methods such as collages and the Mmogo-method™. A secondary analysis of the qualitative data obtained during 2008 was conducted, and the findings were complemented by a qualitative, exploratory and inductive design to explore the experiences of the same students in the same context two years later in 2010. A case study method was used to explore the experiences of the students. Themes that emerged from the data gathered during the first and the second phase of the research relate to the three sites of well-being as described by Prilleltensky and Prilleltensky (2006), namely personal, relational and collective well-being. Well-being in this research refers to the complexity inherent in the multifaceted profession of nursing and is understood as optimal functioning in all aspects of the person in relation to other people as well as the broader context of the nursing community. The findings should be contextualised against the many adverse circumstances to which students are exposed during their first weeks of training. Many of the students are away from home, often for their first time, and they have to adapt to academic workloads and practical training hours as well as acquire the coping skills needed to manage these new challenges. The students in this study reported high levels of stress and anxiety during their training and said they felt under pressure because of the long hours and heavy workloads. Despite this pressure, many of the students maintained a positive attitude and reiterated their desire to become nurses. Relational well-being included support from friends, family members and lecturers. These were important sources of support for the students. Collective well-being was a major concern, and the students were outspoken about the unhealthy broader context in which they had to function. The situation in the nursing community generally is reflected in the training of nurses. This research highlighted a collective environment that was not conducive to the holistic well-being of the student nurses…

▼ The objective of this study has been to investigate the influence of an entrepreneurial
orientation on the perceived success of personal protective equipment organisations
in South Africa. For the purpose of this study, business success has been measured
by means of two dependent variables, namely Business development and
improvement and Business growth.
Structured questionnaires have been administered to managers in one company that
is perceived to be the current market leader in the personal protective equipment
industry in South Africa. Construct validity of the measuring instrument has been
assessed by means of a principal component exploratory factor analysis and by
calculating Cronbach alpha coefficients.
A literature study on the field of Entrepreneurship has been conducted. The term
entrepreneurial orientation consisting of five constructs, namely autonomy,
innovation, pro-activeness, risk-taking and competitive aggressiveness, is defined.
Perceived success of the industry is defined in terms of growth and development.
Both ratings of the constructs and their evaluation of the perceived success of the
industry, have been measured, analysed and reported. The results obtained from the
questionnaire in conjunction with the literature review, are used to draw conclusions
and make recommendations.
The study is based on perceived corporate entrepreneurship within the line, middle
and senior management levels of SPPE, a division of SAMSAC Africa (Pty) Ltd. The
year 2009, has marked a series of economic events that placed the personal
protective equipment market under immense pressure to maintain its bottom line
growth. The environment within the organisation is constantly changing. SPPE
customers, which are mainly the mining industry, have pressurised SPPE to filter
cost savings through to them to ensure that they, in turn, alleviate the pressure to cut
costs. Costs have been identified as one of the key challenges facing the entire mining
sector. In turn, the suppliers of SPPE have also been applying pressure to the
company to increase their purchase price, due to increased labour, production and
overhead costs.
The strengthening of entrepreneurship is an important objective for any organisation
that is building its responsiveness to a globalised and changing environment. For
SPPE to face the pressures brought to bear upon them by their customers and
suppliers respectively, and, coupled with fierce competition in the personal protective
equipment industry, it is necessary to review its processes and actively search for
new ways to increase its capacity for innovation and competitiveness.
The results show that the managers in the participating personal protective
equipment business have perceived that the entrepreneurial orientation factors of
Pro-activeness, Risk-taking and Autonomy have a positive influence on their
business’s development and improvement. A significant relationship within the
dependent variable Business development and improvement has also been found
to…

▼ The primary objective of this study was to investigate the entrepreneurial orientation of a vehicle management and sales company. This was done to help design recommendations to establish an entrepreneurial orientation in the company and enhance the personal traits of the company.
A vast journey into the body of knowledge about entrepreneurship emerged when the literature review of Chapter 2 resulted in the leaders in the field, internationally and local, gave shape and depth to the study.
The empirical study was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to a target population of 120 employees. A total of 41 questionnaires were received and was used to conduct a statistical analysis on. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested by calculating the Cronbach Alpha coefficients for all the variables of entrepreneurial orientation as well as the personal traits. The data was used to calculate the mean and standard deviations of the individual responses for all the variables. The analysis also included the relationship between different demographic information and the variables of the study to test for any significant differences in the means.
Conclusions were drawn from the data extracted from the questionnaires and recommendations were made based on the conclusions and the data on the relevant topics identified in the study.
An action plan that supports the data, conclusions and recommendations was designed to help the company enhance the entrepreneurial orientation as well as the companies’ entrepreneurial behaviour.
The study concludes with measurements of the objectives as well as suggestions for further research on the topic.

▼ Nursing as a profession presents an interesting context for studying meaning of work, as it
centres on the care of patients; the motivation behind choosing such a profession.
Furthermore, taking into consideration the current economic situation and the shortage of
nurses in the country, it is important to investigate the kind of impact that the meaning they
receive from their work may have on their commitment to the hospital and their level of
engagement in their work. What nurses do and how well they do it relates directly to the
quality of care the patient receives. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate
the relationship between meaning of work, organisational commitment and work engagement among nurses of various hospitals in the Vaal Triangle. Also investigated were biographical factors such as gender, race, age, citizenship, qualification, years of service, job level and employment status. A survey design was used on a sample of nurses (N = 199) in hospitals. A biographical questionnaire, the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and Work-Life Questionnaire were administered. The statistical analyses were carried out by means of SPSS (2009). Factor analyses were conducted to determine construct validity and Cronbach’s alphas and inter-item correlation coefficients assessed the internal consistency of the instruments. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from 0,94 to 0,62 were obtained for the above-mentioned questionnaires. Results showed that the majority of nurses viewed their work as either a job or a calling. More African nurses viewed their work as a calling than did any other race group. Younger workers, specifically those with a Grade 12 qualification, viewed their work as a career, while the more experienced nurses and those on management level viewed their work as either a career or a calling. Furthermore, nurses viewing their work as a calling are more committed to the organisation and more engaged in their work, whereas nurses viewing their work as a job are less committed and engaged. Lastly, a positive relationship exists between organisational commitment and work engagement. Therefore, the more strongly nurses view their work as a calling, the more committed they will be to the hospital and the more engaged they will be in their work. Based on the above findings, recommendations were made for the hospitals and future research.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research assignment measures the relative odds of certain savings and debt related outcomes based on various domains of financial literacy, I.E. financial control, financial product choice and financial knowledge/understanding? It also measures the relative odds of certain savings and debt related outcomes based on individual elements of each of these domains. Finally it measures the significance in which overall financial literacy, as a product of the various domains, affect the odds of certain financial outcomes relative to other more conventional demographic determinants, such as income, education and age? The data that informs this research was obtained from the Financial Services Board (FSB) of South Africa, who commissioned the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) to conduct the original data collection process by means of a national survey, in 2011.
The salient findings of this research include that the relative odds of savings outcomes are by and large more significantly affected by both the individual elements of– and the various domains of financial literacy, than debt related outcomes. Financial control as a domain of financial literacy has the greatest impact on the relative odds of both savings and debt related outcomes, while financial knowledge/understanding has a comparatively weak influence on the relative odds of savings and debt related outcomes. Financial control also has a significant influence on financial outcomes relative to conventionally significant determinants of financial outcomes, namely income and education, especially among lower income and or non-tertiary educated segments of the population.
The individual elements of financial control that appear to be most significant in its influence on the relative odds of savings and debt related outcomes, include the use of a budget and an individual‟s reliability in paying his or her bills. The individual elements of the financial product choice domain that have the largest and or most consistent influence on the relative odds of savings outcomes are the extent of research before obtaining financial products and the level of general awareness of financial products. On the other hand, for debt related outcomes, the most influential independent variables (part of the financial product choice domain) are recent regret regarding financial product choice, recent wasteful expenditure on financial products as well as the extent to which an individual is able to identify suitable products. In terms of the individual elements of financial knowledge and understanding, the ability of individuals to understand compound interest affects the relative odds of debt related outcomes most consistently. Forevery savings outcome of interest, the predictor variable (part of the financial knowledge/understanding domain) with the most significant influence is the ability to understand interest on deposits.
The research furthermore uncovered that overall financial literacy has a consistently significant influence on savings outcomes…

▼ The aim of this study was to assess the environmental sanitation conditions with regard to water, sanitation, waste management and
personal hygiene of households of Dukem town in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study design was used to conduct the research. A total of 391 households had participated in the study. Majority of households had access to improved source of drinking water. The mean per capita per day water consumption of the households was low. Two-thirds of households had improved toilet facilities. Availability of improved waste management was grossly inadequate. Two-thirds of households had washed hands after visiting toilet. Generally households had good domestic environmental sanitation conditions but it also emerged that the households were deprived from full range of access to the most essential environmental sanitation services. Therefore, the inadequate level of service to the study area could be seen as opportunity for further focused improvements towards universal access to improved environmental sanitation.
