▼ This dissertation addresses statistical issues related to endogenous peer selection in the context of social networks, social interaction models and snowball sampling methods. The first chapter studies the peer effects of friends, studymates, and seatmates on academic performance. We use data on social networks, personality traits, and cognitive ability measures collected through a unique survey conducted in three schools in Hong Kong. We estimate a social interaction model which accounts for endogenous network formation and correlation between multiple networks with a Bayesian approach. Our results show that the cognitive ability of studymates and the conscientiousness of friends positively affect a student's mathematics exam score while the conscientiousness of studymates and the cognitive ability of friends have no effect. The second chapter proposes a novel identification strategy for social interactions in a model with endogenously formed social networks. The network endogeneity arises from the correlation between the links of the network and the unobservables that determine the outcome of interest. We show that the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix that defines the social network are control variables for network endogeneity without imposing any parametric assumption. We propose an information criterion to select the number of eigenvectors to be included as control variables. We apply the proposed method to the same empirical application as the first chapter and compare the results. The third chapter studies a snowball sampling method for social networks with endogenous peer selection. Snowball sampling is a sampling design which preserves the dependence structure of the network. It sequentially collects the information of vertices linked to the vertices collected in the previous iteration. The snowball samples suffer from a sample selection problem because of the endogenous peer selection. We propose a new estimation method that uses the relationship between samples in different iterations to correct selection. We use the snowball samples collected from Facebook to estimate the proportion of users who support the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong.

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations among the parental rearing behavior, sense of self, and peer relationship of the fifth-grade and sixth-grade elementary school children in Kaohsiung City. In this study, the questionnaire method was used to carry out the research in nine elementary schools in Kaohsiung City that were selected by stratified random sampling, and a total of 412 fifth-grade and sixth-grade students were involved as participants. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 22 and AMOS statistical software. The statistical methods used included descriptive statistical analysis, T test, Pearson product-moment correlation, multiple regression analysis and path analysis. The research results are listed as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in parental rearing behavior and sense of self between different genders of the fifth-grade and sixth-grade students, whereas a significant difference was found in peer relationship. 2. There was no significant difference in parental rearing behavior, sense of self and peer relationship among the fifth-grade and sixth-grade students regardless of being in different grades or having different primary caregivers. 3. There was no significant difference in sense of self and peer relationship among the students with different numbers of siblings, whereas a significant difference was found in parental rearing behavior. 4. There was a significant correlation between parental rearing behavior and peer relationship of the participating students. 5. There was a significant correlation between parental rearing behavior and sense of self of the participating students. 6. There was a significant correlation between sense of self and peer relationship of the participating students. 7. Sense of self had a complete mediation effect between the ârejection dimensionâ in parental rearing behavior and the âsocial anxiety dimensionâ in peer relationship, while having a partial mediation effect between the âover-protection dimensionâ in parental rearing behavior and the âfriendshipâ dimension in peer relationship. Moreover, sense of self had a complete mediation effect between the ârejection dimensionâ in parental rearing behavior and the âsocial anxiety dimensionâ in peer relationship, while having a partial mediation effect between the âover-protection dimensionâ in parental rearing behavior and the âsocial anxiety dimensionâ dimension in peer relationship. Based on the research results, this study suggests recommendations for parents, schools and future researchers to use as a reference. ▼ Samenvatting Binnen het Hoger Algemeen Vormend Onderwijs (Havo) worstelen docenten vaak met de vraag hoe kun je beter inspelen op de leerattitudes van de Havo-leerling. De betrokkenheid van deze leerlingen bij het onderwijs is gering (Klomp & Thielen, 2010). Er wordt binnen werkgroepen van docenten gezocht naar alternatieve werkvormen om de betrokkenheid van leerlingen te vergroten (Vermaas & van der Linden, 2007). Groepsopdrachten zijn hierbij een optie, maar betrokkenheid van de leerlingen hierbij is daarmee nog niet gegarandeerd. Literatuuronderzoek wijst uit dat het goed kan zijn voor de betrokkenheid van leerlingen wanneer ze, bij het uitvoeren van groepsopdrachten, zichzelf en elkaar beoordelen. Dit onderzoek richt zicht op het inzetten van peer-beoordeling door Havo-3 leerlingen tijdens het samenwerkend leren. Door hierbij gebruik te maken van ‘rubrics’ zou betrokkenheid verhoogd kunnen worden. Deze rubrics worden ingezet bij het beoordelen door middel van ‘peer-assessment’ (Topping, 1998). Vier klassen namen deel aan het onderzoek waarvan er twee werden toegewezen aan de experimentele groep en twee fungeerden als controlegroep. Er is onderzocht of er tussen deze groepen verschillen waren in betrokkenheid en samenwerking, door middel van een online enquête en door het voorleggen van open vragen. Verder is er een kwalitatieve studie uitgevoerd (waarin onder meer de uitkomsten van de rubrics zijn meegenomen) om meer inzicht te krijgen in het mechanisme dat tot verbetering in betrokkenheid bij de experimentele groepen zou kunnen leiden. Uit de online enquête blijkt dat er geen significant verschil is tussen de onderzoeks- en de controlegroepen. Uit de open vragen en uitkomsten van de rubrics blijkt echter wel dat het gebruik van rubrics voordelen biedt als het gaat om de betrokkenheid van en samenwerking met medeleerlingen. Ook is zichtbaar dat leerlingen die zich gedurende de opdracht leken te onttrekken, na bekendmaking van de uitkomsten van de eerste rubrics vaak hun werkhouding verbeterden. Verder onderzoek in de school zou duidelijk moeten maken of dit daadwerkelijk het geval is. Dan moeten groepsopdrachten wel een grotere plaats krijgen in de school en zou peer-review door middel van rubrics een vaste plaats moeten krijgen binnen deze groepsopdrachten

▼ The school experience provides a unique socio-cultural exchange in which individuals share experiences and behaviors with those around them, being influenced directly by their social context (Falck, Heblich & Luedemann, 2012). From a perspective on career decision making, the literature points out that entrepreneurial peers can influence an individual to start a venture because of the coexistence with employers can provide the flourishment of entrepreneurial skills as well as sharing of business opportunities (Kacperczyc, 2013, Field, Jayachandran, Pande & Rigol, 2015). The educational environment provides social interaction between individuals at a stage prior to their entry into the labor market, with the career decision being potentially associated with peer social influence (Markussen and Roed, 2017). Thus, this dissertation aimed to estimate the peer effect on the decision to become an entrepreneur. Therefore, two methodological designs were used. The first one was conducted through the Two-Stage Probit Regression model. Data was collected at Instituto Federal de Tecnologia do Grande do Norte, and the sample was composed of 10,889 students from an Institute of Technology and the data collected covers the period from 2001 to 2010. The variable dependent on this modeling is categorical, being assigned the value 1 if the individual has become an entrepreneur. As a variable of interest, the fraction of entrepreneurs in the classroom of the individual "i" was used at a time "t". Variables related to the personal, social and economic factors of the individual were used as controls. The results of the first essay shown that having entrepreneurial classmates positively affects the propensity to become an entrepreneur. The second essay of this dissertation had a methodological approach based on Network Analysis (Jackson, 2010) to estimate who in fact are the peers of an individual. To this end, 287 students of Instituto Federal de Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte were surveyed by a questionnaire composed of 47 questions distributed among the dimensions of interaction with Peers, Entrepreneurial Intention, Personal Attitudes, Subjective Norm, Control Behavioral Perceived, Fear of Failure, and Risk Aversion. The methodological design applied 2SLS regression and IV Probit methods. In order to estimate who potential entrepreneurs in the sample are, Entrepreneurial Index of Liñán and Chen (2009), composed by 5 questions measured on a scale of 1 to 10 on the entrepreneurial intentions of the individual, was applied. Due to the sample was composed by students, the instrumental variable “profession of the individual's parents” were used to capture the propensity to entrepreneurship, being considered entrepreneurs those who have at least an entrepreneurial parent (Lindquist et al., 2015; Markussen and Roed, 2017). ▼ This dissertation discusses the role of social network and labor market regulation in understanding racial and gender inequality. The first chapter contributes to the discussion on childhood exposure by investigating the extent to which the educational background of peers' parents is related to a child's future college attainment. I analyze the friendship networks of a nationally representative sample of high-school students in the US and find that the spillover from peers' parents of the same gender operates independently of peers' academic performance. The effects are robust in addressing friendship selection. The same gender pattern suggests either the transmission of gender identity or the presence of a role model effect. Furthermore, the same gender spillover is significant only for students from lower-educated families. A student whose father is absent or less caring also experiences significant influence from peers' fathers. The heterogeneity by own family background indicates the influences from parental and non-parental adults are substitutes. The second and third chapter examines the effect of occupational licensing on wage and employment. If the source of racial and gender wage gap is statistical discrimination, licensed minority and females should receive higher license premium since licensing provides information on workers' productivity to the labor market. The result of the second chapter shows that licensing provides signals on the non-felon status and completely closes the racial wage gap between black men and white men; licensing reduces the gender wage gap but the gender disparity on wages still persists among licensed workers. In the third chapter, I exploit state variation in licensing laws to study the effect of licensing on occupational choice using a boundary discontinuity design. I find that licensing reduces the equilibrium labor supply by an average of 17%-27%. The negative labor supply effects of licensing appear to be strongest for white workers and comparatively weaker for black workers. ▼ Since the collapse of the housing market, the prolonged economic uncertainty lingering in the U.S. economy has dampened restaurant performance. Economic uncertainty affects consumer sentiment and spending, turning into demand uncertainty. Nevertheless, the highly competitive nature of the restaurant industry does not allow much room for restaurants to actively control prices, leaving most food service firms exposed to demand uncertainty. To investigate the impact of demand uncertainty in the restaurant industry, this study focused on the implications of demand uncertainty for investment. The first essay in chapter 3 examined the impact of demand uncertainty on investment and how the impact varies with industry-specific features: franchising and segment. The results showed that the investment rate decreases with the level of uncertainty and the association is nonlinear. That is, the investment drops more rapidly as the level of uncertainty increases. This study further revealed that there is no significant moderating effect of franchising on the uncertainty-investment relationship. When it comes to segment, full-service restaurants are more adversely affected by demand uncertainty than limited-service restaurants. The second essay in chapter 4 explored how managers cope with uncertainty when making investment decisions. In the absence of a clear imperative of what is efficient, managers are likely to scan other peers in the market and mimic their behavior. Focusing on this idea, it tested whether the investment is influenced by peers’ investment activities and whether peer-sensitive firms produce better investment outcomes. Consistent with the hypotheses, sample restaurant firms appeared to be affected by their peers in making investments. The results also indicate that uncertainty is a powerful force that leads firms to follow peers. In addition, it was seen that investment of peer-sensitive firms is not as effective as that of less-sensitive firms in growing market share. Lastly, the final piece of dissertation in chapter 5 analyzed the effectiveness of investment made under uncertainty. The findings indicate that a rise in investment in times of high uncertainty leads to a larger market share, suggesting that well-targeted investment can help firms turn crisis into opportunity to pull ahead of competitors who retreat in the face of uncertainty. However, increased depreciation costs and dwindling sales can hurt the profit margin in uncertain times. ▼ This dissertation includes three chapters on microeconometrics with applications to social network. In the first chapter, we study identification and estimation of peer effects in a game theoretical social interaction model with incomplete information. We show that players’ equilibrium choice probabilities and peer effects can be identified in the presence of measurement errors in network connections by exploiting the nonparametric methodology developed for nonclassical measurement error models. Based on the identification methodology, a semiparametric estimation method is established and applied to study the peer effects on youth alcohol drinking behaviors using data of adolescents in the United States, our empirical findings show that peer effects will be significantly underestimated if measurement errors are ignored. In the second chapter, we study strategic social interaction among economic agents that are connected through the phenomena of homophily. In particular, we measure homophily effects by the differences between players’ socioeconomic characteristics. Under the symmetric equilibrium selection mechanism, we establish a nonparametric approach to identify the structural model and propose a computationally feasible two-step estimation procedure. The asymptotic properties of the two-step estimator are derived under context of “large games", i.e., the number of players going to infinity. Finally, we apply the identification and estimation methods to study the peer effects on youth smoking behaviors using data of adolescents in the United States, our empirical findings show positive and statistically significant peer effects and demonstrate the empirical importance of including homophily effect in our model. In the third chapter, we study bandwidth selection method for the smoothed maximum score estimator. The smoothed maximum score estimator is a semiparametric estimator for binary response model, which is very useful for many economics and statistics applications. The method for selecting the smoothing parameter (bandwidth) in smoothed maximum score estimator is analogous to the plug-in method in kernel density estimation. It requires initial “pilot" values of the bandwidth to obtain the optimal bandwidth. The method has the disadvantage of not being fully data-driven. In this paper, we propose a data-driven bandwidth selection method by minimizing a cross-validated criterion function. Simulation results show that our proposed method performs better than existing methods. ▼ Peers play a significant role in affecting students’ academic, social, psychological and labor market outcomes. Although there is an extensive literature on peer influence on adolescents’ academic outcomes, existing literature failed to examine in-depth peer influence processes, and there is still very little cross-national comparative and long-term perspective research on peer influence on academic outcomes. In this dissertation, I conducted three empirical studies to address each of these three above-mentioned limitations in the peer influence literature, using nationally representative, longitudinal datasets. I first explored peer influence at different levels and the relationship between the effects of different peer group attributes. I found that the average GPA of students’ friends have significantly positive effects on the academic outcomes of high school students of all races/ethnicities and that the effect of the racial heterogeneity of friends on student’s academic outcomes is mediated in part through the effect of the average GPA of students’ friends. I then conducted a cross-national comparative study of peer influence on eighth-graders in the U.S. and three East Asian countries/regions. Results from my HLM analyses show that school-level peer achievement is positively and significantly associated with eighth-graders’ test scores in all four countries and that there is very slight US Ì¢âÂ" East Asian difference in peer effect at the school level. At the individual level, results from analyses of the pooled data using interactions by region (East Asia versus the U.S.) show that friends’ attitude on doing well in Math/Science is less negatively and significantly related to East Asian students’ achievement than with that of the U.S. students. Yet further analyses using pooled data with interactions by country (with the U.S. as reference group) and with country-specific data reveal that the differences are more country-specific than region-specific. Finally I examined the long-term influence of high school friends on 10th-graders’ higher educational attainment process. Results from my logistic regressions show that friends’ pro-education attitude at 10th-grade increases the probability that respondents expected to need a college degree for their jobs at the age of thirty, and that they planned to go to college right after high school and applied to at least one college at 12th-grade. I also found that the number of friends who were to attend a 4-year college at 12th-grade increases respondents’ likelihood of going to a 2-year or 4-year college (versus no PSE) and to eventually attain a Bachelor’s degree as of 2000, eight years after their high school graduation. ▼ Peers play an important role in shaping behavior in many contexts. In this dissertation, I study the role of peer interactions on key educational outcomes. In Chapter One, I implement a ﬁeld experiment to examine the role of social interactions in creating spillover effects. Spillover effects happen when individuals are indirectly affected by an intervention through exposure to other treated individuals. In the experiment, I randomly assign college students in an introductory statistics course to a low-cost behavioral intervention. Treated students receive advice and prompts to make exam study plans. I measure a naturally formed peer network and exploit the exogenous variation in exposure to the intervention in order to causally estimate spillover effects on study behaviors that are transmitted through study partners. I construct a simple social learning model. Additional behavioral evidence further supports the model and I show that the positive spillover effects on untreated students are mostly driven by treated partners who have high beliefs about the return to the applet usage. Surprisingly, I ﬁnd circumstances under which social interactions reduce the treatment effect. Taken together, this paper provides causal evidence of spillover effects on behavior due to peer interactions and unpacks the complexities behind spillover effects. My results highlight that in networked environments, policy makers should take peer effects into consideration not only to correctly evaluate, but also to leverage social learning to maximize policy impacts. In Chapter Two, I study a natural experiment that randomly assigns students into study groups and estimate the effect of studying with peers of certain characteristics. I ﬁnd little evidence that peers’ background academic performances have signiﬁcant effects on the course ﬁnal grade using the traditional linear in the mean model. I ﬁnd that the group gender mix has an economically and statistically signiﬁcant impact. In particular, being in groups with more female peers leads to an increase in the course grade for both female and male students. I exploit the course website’s log data, and ﬁnd that one is more likely to download course materials when in more female groups. This is a plausible mechanism through which the gender mix affects the grades. I also ﬁnd that studying with peers from another lecture section marginally improves one’s course grade. My paper therefore provides practical suggestions for assigning students into study groups. In Chapter Three, we use a longitudinal survey design and follow college freshman, in order to provide evidence for two separate mechanisms (homophily and inﬂuence) behind similarity in peers’ behaviors. This paper demonstrates these effects for the subtle (but broadly important) underlying economic preferences, rather than the observable but potentially domain-speciﬁc behaviors previously studied. ▼ This dissertation is mainly focusing on an economic evaluation of a childhood obesity intervention program, after school physical activities and a nationwide social health care program. The analysis is conducted within three main essays. The purpose of the first essay is to estimate peer effects on third grade students’ BMI and to investigate the social and physiological explanations for such effects. The BMI of students from a childhood obesity intervention program (N=573) is used to assess peer effects on students’ BMI by identification of endogenous social effects. We apply IV regression to account for this endogenous effects. Strong peer effects are found for the overall sample, females and males (p<.1). However, when classifying students into improvement versus non-improvement groups, the peer effect is only found among females categorized in the improvement group (B=1.472) and males in the non-improvement group (B= 1.176). Thus in general, peer effects are found for students aged 8-11, with sex differences in the psychological and social behavioral motivations. In the second essay, we exploit the data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011 to evaluate the effect of playing after school on academic performance by using a propensity score matching approach. We highlight that in addition to intrinsic characteristics of students, the extent to which after school activities affect academic performance depends on extrinsic factors such as parental involvement. In order to capture the heterogeneous effects of playing after school, we analyze the effect by separating the overall sample according to whether parents check their children’s homework and set specific times for after school homework. We further uncover heterogeneous effects of playing after school for different levels of parental involvement and supervision. The results show that playing after school significantly increases math and science test scores of students by 7.9 points and 4.2 points respectively. Moreover, this positive effect is stronger among students with greater parental involvement and supervision, but weaker or nonexistent among students with less parental involvement and supervision. The third essay fills the gap in the literature by examining the long-term causal effects of Medicaid enrollment on high school and college completion through a regression discontinuity design that exploits an eligibility discontinuity created by the Medicaid expansion of 1990. Using the American Community Survey data, we present evidence that Medicaid enrollment decreased high school completion rates by 3.6 percentage points (using local linear regression and IK bandwidth selector). However, we find little evidence of adverse impact of Medicaid on college completion. We also find heterogeneous effects by race/ethnicity. While Medicaid has no significant impact on educational achievement of blacks or Asian, Hispanics are negatively affected by Medicaid on both high school and college completion. ▼ This dissertation comprises three essays on the role of soft data and spillover effects in real estate. In the first essay, tracking a sample of modified loans underlying private-label mortgage-backed securities, I compare the modification effectiveness of servicers who originated mortgages versus those who simply serviced them. The probability of re-default among loans modified by the former is over 6.9 percentage point lower than the latter. Further tests show that the differences in modification success likely come from the soft information acquired during the origination process. These findings suggest that the loss of soft information in mortgage securitization can impose a substantial cost on mortgage servicing, which raises important policy implications for government regulations in this market. The second essay examines the effect of peer firm sentiment on firm investment decisions using data from public homebuilders in the U.S. over 2003Q1-2016Q3. Peer sentiment is measured by the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, derived from a monthly survey of homebuilders’ perceptions about the conditions of the single-family housing market. I find that a one-standard-deviation increase in the peer sentiment index induces homebuilders to increase their land inventory by 8.4%-12.6%. In addition, big builders are just as prone to peer sentiment as small firms. Consistent with the catering theory, homebuilders held by more short term investors are more likely to follow their peers than those held mainly by institutional shareholders. Interestingly, firms that overbuild compared to their peers have lower stock returns in the next quarter while underbuilding is rewarded with higher stock prices, but this effect decreases as the magnitude of underbuilding increases. Finally, the third essay investigates the effect of separating real estate from the Financials sector in the Global Industry Classification Standard. Since Sep 1, 2016, real estate became an independent sector instead of being an industry group under the Financials sector together with banks and insurance. Using Real Estate Investment Trusts to represent the new GICS Real Estate sector, I find that their correlation with the Financials sector fell from 0.568-0.775 to 0.338-0.581 after their departure. The reduction in their connection occurred first at announcement and again at implementation. In addition, REIT returns became as much as 60% less volatile than before. However, becoming a separate sector did not affect trading activities in the REIT market, at least in the short post-implementation period covered in this paper. ▼ The first chapter of the dissertation, “The Intergenerational Transmission of Smoking Behavior,” investigated the impact of parental smoking on adolescent smoking, the moderating effect of parental education and family income, the long-term effect of mother smoking, as well as the effect of the change of mother smoking on adolescent smoking. I developed an economic model to illustrate the relationship between parental smoking and adolescent smoking. Based on the hypothesis that wealthy and high-educated parents smoke less, the model predicted that this group of people would transmit less proportion of their smoking behavior to their adolescent offspring than would their counterparts. My findings showed that parental smoking had a significant impact on adolescent smoking decisions. Specifically, the probability of adolescent smoking would increase by about 5% if their parent was a current smoker. Family income was an important moderator between parental smoking and adolescent smoking. Wealthier parents transmitted less proportion of smoking behavior to their adolescent offspring. The second chapter of the dissertation, “The Influences of Parents and Peers on Adolescent Smoking: Implications for Anti-tobacco Programs”, investigated the differential effect of parental smoking and peer smoking across different subpopulations to lend support for the implementation of anti-tobacco programs. To address the potential endogeneity of the peer effect, a 2SLS model was employed. The analysis was stratified by neighborhood per capita income, gender, and ethnicity. My findings showed that both parental smoking and peer smoking had significant impact on adolescent smoking. Specifically, having one more friend smoking would raise the probability of adolescent smoking by 7.18 percentage point. Having one more parent who ever smoked would raise the probability of adolescent smoking by 3.49 percentage point in a two-parent household, and 6.97 percentage point in a single-parent household. Females were more likely to be influenced by parental smoking than were males. Among all races, Hispanic adolescents were more susceptible to peer smoking influences than were other races. Parental smoking had a greater impact on white and in low- and middle-income neighborhoods. Neither parental smoking nor peer smoking had a significant impact on black adolescents. Peer smoking demonstrated an inverse U-shaped relation with neighborhood per capita income. However, it did not differ significantly across neighborhoods. The third chapter of the dissertation, “Cigarette Price and Smoking Initiation and Cessation: Were Different Subpopulations Influenced to the Same Extent?” investigated the differential effect of cigarette prices on adolescent decisions to start, quit smoking, and make a quit attempt by family income and gender. Discrete time hazard models with and without state fixed effects and logistic regression method were implemented to conduct the analysis. ▼ This study explores what happened when teachers in three London schools participated in Teacher Rounds (Del Prete, 2013) as a collaborative professional learning activity. It seeks to understand if and how the Rounds' protocols supported teachers' professional learning and helped them improve their practice. In a climate where teachers' response to traditional CPD and feedback from formal observations is often "passive" (Danielson, 2009, p.4), I argue that Teacher Rounds are an innovative form of professional learning where teachers can take ownership of learning from each other. The Teacher Round protocols ensure a safe environment for teachers to work together in a collaborative way and helps them develop a language to talk about teaching and learning and have professional dialogue with each other. I suggest that professional learning that takes place in the "authentic world" (Darling-Hammond and McLaughlin, 2011, p.82) of the classroom is more effective than traditional CPD in improving the practice of teaching. This study is primarily a participatory action research (MacDonald, 2012, Chevalier and Buckles, 2013) project, which works with teachers rather than on them. Teacher Rounds are similar in many ways to Instructional Rounds (City, Elmore, Fiarman, and Teitel, 2009) and are based on the practice of teaching hospitals where trainee doctors learn around a hospital bed. Participants in Teacher Rounds used the Round protocols, which included identifying their problem of practice, inviting the Round group into their classrooms, and gathering evidence without attempting to interpret or judge what they see and hear. Following each Round a post- Round discussion was held where teachers reflected on their own practice and the practice they had seen in the classroom. This thesis makes a unique contribution to the literature and research around professional learning and performance cultures and offers Teacher Rounds as an alternative approach to teacher development.
