▼ Objective: To determine if caregiver race/ethnicity impacts their willingness to accept
passive immobilization and to determine if a written and pictorial description of the technique will make the caregivers more likely to accept the technique.
Methods: Caregivers of patients age 1-16 were recruited in the Post Graduate Pediatric Dentistry Clinic at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. If caregivers opted to participate, they completed a questionnaire, reviewed a pictorial and written description of the technique, and then completed another questionnaire. The data was analyzed in SPSS using Kruskal Wallis ANOVA and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks with a p-value of 0.05.
Results: A total of 284 subjects, who met the inclusion criteria, were entered and consented for this study. Eighteen were excluded from data analysis. Therefore, the sample size of 266 caregivers were used for statistical analysis.
Hypothesis 1: The null hypothesis that there is no difference in the caregiver's willingness to accept
passive immobilization based upon race was rejected using Kruskal Wallis ANOVA at p=0.05. Based upon initial attitudes, subjects consented to
passive immobilization at the following percentages: Hispanic (84%), African American (66%), Asian (50%) and Caucasian (24%).
Hypothesis 2: The null hypothesis that there is no difference in willingness to accept
passive immobilization after reviewing written and pictorial description was rejected using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks at p=0.05.
Conclusions: We conclude that caregiver race/ethnicity does impact their willingness to accept
passive immobilization in our patient population. We also conclude that caregivers are more likely to accept the use of
passive immobilization after they are given more information about the technique.

▼ The Very High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (VHTR) is one of the next generation nuclear reactors designed to achieve high temperatures to support industrial applications and power generation. The Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS) is a
passive safety system that will be incorporated in the VTHR, designed to remove the heat from the reactor cavity and maintain the temperature of structures and concrete walls under desired limits during normal operation and accident scenarios. A small scale (1:23) water-cooled experimental facility was scaled, designed, and constructed in order to study the complex thermohydraulic phenomena taking place in the RCCS during steady-state and transient conditions. The facility represents a portion of the reactor vessel with nine stainless steel coolant risers and utilizes water as coolant. The facility was equipped with instrumentation to measure temperatures and flow rates and a general verification was completed during the shakedown. A model of the experimental facility was prepared using RELAP5-3D and simulations were performed to validate the scaling procedure. The overall behavior of the facility met the expectations. The steady-state condition was achieved and the facility capabilities were confirmed to be very promising in performing additional experimental tests, including flow visualization, and produce data for code validation. The experimental data produced during the steady-state run were successfully compared with the simulation results obtained using RELAP5-3D, confirming the capabilities of the system code of simulating the thermal-hydraulic phenomena occurring in the reactor cavity.

▼ Passive samplers are
subject to a myriad of sources of uncertainty, which affect their precision and accuracy. To investigate this uncertainty, an evaluation of
passive sampler data for SO2, NO2, O3, and H2S was carried out in the Lakeland Industry & Community Association in east-central Alberta from 2009 – 2011. The results of this study indicate that while
passive sampler data followed the same general trend as continuous monitoring data,
passive sampler data were often statistically different which strongly indicates they were not always accurate.
Passive samplers are further limited by only providing a time weighted average of pollutant concentrations over the sampling period, which prevents determination of when or where a pollutant has exceeded regulatory limits. While
passive samplers are useful in monitoring general changes in ambient air quality at low concentrations, this work strongly suggests that
passive sampler data should not be used for regulatory monitoring.

▼ The objective of my thesis is to investigate Passivization in two different theories of grammar, namely Standard Theory and Lexical-Functional Grammar. In the first chapter I am going to introduce the architecture of the theories and explain the major concepts and terms within their framework. The second chapter gives an overview of the theoretical aspects of
Passive formation within these theories. The most outstanding difference could be summarized as follows: in Standard Theory Passivization is a syntactic transformation applied to active Deep Structure representations, from which it derives
passive Surface Structure sentences. On the other hand, LFG postulates a lexical
Passive rule that is capable of reassigning particular grammatical functions of arguments, therefore in this case it is a lexical process. The third chapter offers an extensive reasoning against transformational treatment (in ST) of Passivization and demonstrates superiority of the LFG-style lexical rule of Passivization. Among the most important arguments such notions and constructions will be concerned as selectional generalization, strict subcategorization, idiom chunks, prepositional passives, double passives, raising and equi.

▼ Of course this distinction can be found both in English and Polish, which belong to the Indo-European family of languages, still they are only distantly related. In my essay, I shall discuss these structures from a general point of view and I shall also describe the way they appear in these languages. In the first chapter, I shall summarize the approach I take to be the theoretical background of my discussion. In the second chapter of my paper my goal is to narrow down my paper to the thesis I shall elaborate on. In the third chapter we will find out about the above-mentioned active/
passive distinction in more detail. The forth section of this paper is devoted to the application of the Government and Binding framework to
passive structures. English and Polish particular grammars are compared and contrasted in the fifth chapter, which is followed by a short summary of the perfective/imperfective distinction relevant to Polish passives. Finally, I shall give a thorough description of both English and Polish
passive constructions in the light of the analyses above. The last chapter is actually an additional element of my discussion: in it we will find out about a misconception concerning impersonal structures.

▼ In this study a model was introduced which simulates the effects of
passive walking support on the human body.
Passive support was designed with the goal to reduce human energy expenditure for walking. The XPED exoskeleton and three alternative exoskeleton configurations were tested. The XPED is an exoskeleton with two artificial tendons,
passive elastic structures which provide a moment at the hip, knee and ankle joint. In previous research, simulation showed 42.5% reduction in joint work. In experiments however, no reduction in energy expenditure was measured. The old simulation model lacks modelling of human anatomy. This was considered a very important reason for the mismatch which was seen between reduction in energy expenditure in the model and with experiments. The new model includes the modelling of human muscles, tendons, and dissipation of negative work. This also enabled new measures for energy expenditure: muscle work, in which eccentric muscle work contributes less than concentric muscle work, and muscle moments. It was hypothesised that with this new model the work efficiency, the amount of reduction in work, of the XPED exoskeleton would be predicted much lower. The new model showed 37.0% reduction in muscle work. Although efficiency was lower, the presence of anatomic structures in the model did not greatly affect the functionality of the XPED. An optimisation of the XPED parameters to the new work measure for energy expenditure even brought work efficiency up to 43.6%. The other support configurations provided support at the hip, at the knee, or at the hip and the knee joint. It was hypothesised that these configurations were as efficient as the XPED, since mechanical work at the ankle is already performed passively to large extent. This had to be rejected. Work efficiencies of the hip, knee and combined support were respectively 18.7%, 18.4% and 37.1%. Although efficiencies were lower, these configurations are still worth evaluating since they have the benefit that the exoskeleton can be smaller and that the naturally present and very efficient energy saving mechanism in the ankle is not disturbed. A pilot experiment where these configurations were tested with the LOPES exoskeleton did not prove reduction in energy expenditure.

▼ Background: Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS)
increases one’s risk of a variety of deleterious health outcomes.
SHS is particularly troublesome among infants, a higher proportion
of whom are exposed to SHS compared to adults and whose physiology
predisposes them to additional adverse health outcomes. Past
behavioral interventions have been successful in reducing exposure
during infancy, but the mechanisms by which interventions have been
successful are unclear. The purpose of this analysis was to explore
the effect of a SHS exposure reduction intervention on infant
salivary cotinine as mediated through social support and SHS
avoidance behaviors. Methods: This analysis included participants
(n = 290) from the Baby’s Breath study, a randomized controlled
trial of a tailored, video-based intervention that aimed to reduce
the SHS exposure of women during pregnancy and their infant after
birth. Ordinary least squares regression was used to construct
mediation models to assess the impact of social support during and
after pregnancy on SHS avoidance behaviors and infant exposure.
Measures included social support, the Martinelli Scale, Avoidance
of Tobacco Smoke, and salivary cotinine concentration was used as a
biomarker for SHS exposure. Results: Social support measured at 32
weeks gestation and 12 weeks postpartum were both positively
related to SHS avoidance behaviors. SHS avoidance behaviors were
inversely associated with infant salivary cotinine concentration.
The intervention influenced participant’s perceived social support
at 12 weeks postpartum but not during pregnancy. As such, the
intervention influenced infant salivary cotinine through social
support at 12 weeks postpartum but not at 32 weeks gestation.
Discussion: In the Baby’s Breath study, social support positively
influenced participant’s SHS avoidance behaviors while with her
infant, which in turn reduced their SHS exposure. However, the
intervention only impacted participant’s perceived social support
after birth. It could be that repeated exposure to the intervention
over time was required for women to galvanize social support around
them. The results of this analysis support the inclusion of social
support in future SHS exposure reduction interventions, and suggest
that interventions aiming to reduce infant exposure should be
delivered during pregnancy as well as after birth.

▼ High stiffness / low mass materials or structures reduce structure weight in transportation, but show little inherent damping. A new composite material that exhibits high stiffness and high damping might reduce issues with vibration in mechanical systems and structures. The material comprises three constituents: negative springs, positive springs, and damping elements. These components help achieve high stiffness with
passive adaptive response over a frequency range. When applying sinusoidal loads on the material, the positive/negative spring interface oscillates, but body is relatively steady. This material needs a damping element to dissipate the vibrational energy at the interface. This research proposes new damping elements with novel properties starting with the fluid pumping element from the Synthetic Multifunctional Materials program. The low-hydraulic-radius hourglass (LHG) machine modified from Hawkins??? original design provides high stiffness with a high damping ability. The LHG machine pumps a fluid and dissipates energy by viscous dissipation and mass transfer. This pumping creates a hysteresis effect that indicates the energy dissipation. Stacking LHG layers using Newtonian fluids in the LHG channel or a single layer using non-Newtonian fluids can produce
passive adaptive damping through a frequency range. Shear thinning fluids placed in the LHG machine???s channel provide adaptive performance by changing their dynamic viscosity. Experiments show
passive adaptive damping up to tan ?? one with a shear thinning fluid from 0.1 to 10 Hz. Computational fluid-solid interaction studies suggest a theoretical shear thinning fluid that produces high
passive adaptive damping.

▼ This thesis presents a comprehensive study into the
passive thermal management of high-voltage power electronics converters for use in augmented grid assets capable of performing power routing on the electricity grid. The work has focused on the thermal transport of single-phase closed thermosiphon systems incorporating a secondary parallel flow path for cooling an additional, typically smaller, thermal load associated with the power electronics converters. Dual-loop thermosiphon
passive thermal management systems were incorporated into a grounded compact dynamic phase angle regulator (GCD-PAR) that aimed to facilitate power routing and reduce line losses on the power grid. The power router utilizes power electronics that reject heat to a planar area, or cold plate, which must be cooled by an entirely
passive system to comply with the minimum 30 year mean time between failures (MTBF) consistent with grid reliability requirements. This design includes a secondary-loop cooling path that utilizes the cooling oil already present in the transformer to also cool the power router. An analytical multi-physics thermosiphon model is developed that couples existing fluid dynamic and heat transfer correlations to create a description of the steady state operation of a specific cylindrical 50 kVA transformer augmented with a thermosiphon. The model is validated experimentally and found to solve for steady state baseplate temperatures under maximum load within 2°C in 0.1 seconds. The model is then modified for a specific rectilinear 1 MVA transformer augmented with three thermosiphons. The 1 MVA model is validated experimentally and found to solve for steady state baseplate temperatures under maximum load within 4 °C in 0.2 seconds. The analytical model proves to be accurate and solve quickly with various geometric configurations and thermal loads.

▼ Background: Data on the typical daily exposure of non-smokers to second-hand smoke (SHS) are limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the SHS exposure encountered by adults and children in Scotland and to examine the proportion of total exposure received within different microenvironments. Methods: Primary research was carried out to gather information on SHS concentrations within cars in both simulated and real-life settings. Observational work was also carried out to determine the prevalence of exposure to SHS in cars. Further work was carried out to gather information on occupational SHS exposure. Data from all of these components were combined with data from previously published sources to produce estimates of how much SHS-derived PM2.5 exposure is typically received by adults and children within different micro-environments. Results: The contribution to total SHS exposure from each micro-environment was calculated. This was carried out for a child living in: a non-smoking home; a home where only the father smokes; a home where only the mother smokes; and a home where both parents smoke. In addition to this the equivalent dose of SHS inhaled (expressed as a mass) were also calculated for each of the micro-environments. This method was also used to determine the SHS contribution of different micro-environments for adult non-smokers. Exposure calculations were carried out assuming that exposure in the home was reduced to the levels found in non-smoking homes and the contribution from the remaining micro-environments unchanged. Observations identified that 2.4% of cars carrying children exposed children to SHS and exposure intensities during smoking car journeys can be particularly high with peak exposures ranging from 55 to 886 μgm-3. Conclusion: This is the first study to estimate the SHS exposure contributions from different microenvironments encountered by children and adults in Scotland. This study indicates that encouraging behavioural change in terms of smoking in home and car micro-environments has the greatest potential to reduce non-smokers’ daily exposure to tobacco derived fine particulate matter.

▼ This thesis is concerned with the transformerless
synthesis of passive electrical networks, which is motivated by
mechanical control based on inerters. Passive network synthesis is
a significant topic of circuits and systems theory, which is to
physically design a circuit containing passive components according
to a given function describing the network, such as an impedance,
admittance, transfer function, etc. The most general one-port
transformerless realization approach, Bott-Duffin procedure, always
generates many redundant elements, and the transformerless
realization problem for multi-port passive networks is still an
open question. After the 1970s, research interest of passive
network synthesis has declined due to the rapid development of
integrated circuits.
More than one decade ago, a new kind of
passive mechanical elements named the inerter was invented, which
completes the analogy between passive mechanical and electrical
systems. As a result, passive network synthesis can be applied to
the design of passive mechanical networks, which has been
successfully utilized in a series of mechanical control systems,
such as vehicle suspensions, train suspensions, machine vibration
systems, etc. Such a passive control method can have lower cost and
higher reliability compared with the active control approach, and
it has been shown that the introduction of the inerter can
certainly enhance the system performances. Since in practice
mechanical systems usually require low complexity due to the
limitation of weight and space, research interest in
transformerless synthesis of passive networks become significant
and urgent for more effective mechanical control.
In this
thesis, the minimal realizability problem of a biquadratic
impedance with double poles and zeros as a seven-element
series-parallel network is investigated, which is the series or
parallel connection of a three-element seriesparallel network and a
four-element series-parallel network. Such a class of biquadratic
impedances can provide fast transitions, which is expected to have
advantages in some mechanical systems. A necessary and sufficient
condition for such a realizability is presented.
This thesis
also solves the minimal realization problem for a third-order real
symmetric matrix as the admittance of a three-port resistive
network. A necessary and sufficient condition for the realizability
is derived and the configurations to cover the condition are also
presented. The investigation can provide guidance on minimal
realization problems of more general n-port resistive networks and
can be a first critical step toward solving the realizability of
n-port RLC networks. Moreover, the results can be utilized to solve
minimal realizations of one-port or two-port passive mechanical or
electrical networks based on the elements extraction approach.
In addition, this thesis is concerned with the realization problem
for a class of transfer functions as a two-port RC ladder network
with a specified gain. The cascade realization methodology and the…

▼ Passive sampling is a popular technology for environmental monitoring, and silicone is an ideal choice for a variety of
passive sampling applications. The silicone work described here encompasses laboratory and field studies that demonstrate the use of this polymer in novel environments, for new applications, and for emerging compounds. Unique attributes of silicone polymers make them advantageous for targeting semi-polar contaminants not typically targeted in environmental research. Oxygenated polycyclic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) represent an emerging class of contaminants with chemical properties well suited to silicone
passive sampling. The first challenge was to create a robust OPAH analytical method to examine these compounds in silicone, and two independent methods (liquid as well as gas chromatography) were optimized and demonstrated for 24 ketone-containing aromatic hydrocarbons, more than other methods published at that time. An isotopically labeled OPAH was used as an internal standard in contrast to previous methods which used only labeled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The efficacy of each method was further demonstrated by comparing standard addition to internal standard quantitation. Next, OPAHs, PAHs and pesticides were used to compare several silicone materials with low density polyethylene (LDPE) at Portland Harbor Superfund field sites. Target analyte detection, precision, and practical considerations in the field and laboratory were used to evaluate
silicone materials. Individual differences between LDPE and the most optimal silicone polymer for OPAHs highlighted the importance of using optimized methods or polymer choice for a particular analyte class. Biggest differences were found for 9-fluorenone, benzanthrone, and 5,12-naphtacenequinone. After this successful polymer comparison, the next study involved a novel application of silicone wristbands as personal
passive samplers. Commercially available silicone was modified to serve as personal samplers and tested in both an ambient and occupational settings. Silicone wristbands provided a valuable tool to monitor individual exposures that were time weighted averages of personalized exposure. The ambient study captured 49 individual compounds including PAHs, personal and consumer products, pesticides, phthalates, and as well as other industrial compounds. In the occupational study, roofers working with hot asphalt wore silicone samplers and evidence of both temporal (day versus week deployment, p < 0.05), and spatial (between two roofing sites p < 0.05), sensitivity was found for PAHs, and two OPAHs were detected in some samplers as well (9-fluorenone and benzofluorenone). Finally, another novel application was developed for silicone as an in vivo monitor of persistent organic pollutants. Human silicone breast explants were found to contain chlorinated pesticides, and p,p-DDE and PCB 118 were used in murine models as an in vivo sampler to explore silicone as a biomonitor and sink of organic contaminant exposure. Silicone was found to sequester…

▼ Held every two years in Washington DC and run by the US Department of
Energy the Solar Decathlon is a competition that challenges architecture
and engineering students from all over the world to come up with new and
innovative ways to design and construct low energy homes. For the first
time in the competition’s history a team from New Zealand was selected
to compete in the 2011 competition. This thesis documents the design
process of the First Light house from concept to construction focusing on
the relationship between energy and architecture in a New Zealand home
designed for the Solar Decathlon.
The challenge for the young architects and engineers competing in the
competition is to develop ways of reducing energy consumption and to
raise awareness of the energy saving benefits of highly efficient home
design to the public. Despite this being the underlying philosophy, this
thesis suggests that the competition is structured in a way that rewards
technology over
passive design innovation in architecture. A typical Solar
Decathlon house is epitomized by a large solar array generating the power
needing to run an oversized mechanical system. The New Zealand entry
challenges this trend with the design of a home that is focused on ways to
improve
passive strategies for reducing energy use first before relying on
technology. The question is whether a home designed with this philosophy
in mind can still meet the strict requirements set out in the ten contests
embedded in the Solar Decathlon?
Designing a home to meet these requirements was also, in many ways,
contradictory to the house’s philosophy. The conceptual driver of the First
Light house was the iconic ‘kiwi bach.’ Commonly defined as “something
you built yourself, on land you don’t own, out of materials you borrowed
or stole,” the bach gives a unique model of comfort and how people
might live in a space. Its values are associated with a relationship with the
outdoors, a focus on the social aspects of the home and a simple use of
technology. As the project developed it was also apparent ‘the bach’, if it
were used all year round, could become a symbol for the current state of
many New Zealand homes; cold, damp, unhealthy and wasteful of energy.
Finding ways to improve this while maintaining the essence of the bach
became one of the major motivations throughout the design process. The
challenge with this was that the goals associated with designing a ‘kiwi
bach’ for a New Zealand climate were, in many ways, conflicting with the
requirements of the Solar Decathlon competition.
Using comprehensive thermal modelling the First Light house was
designed as a net zero energy home that could meet the requirements of
two quite unique briefs for two distinctly different climates. Throughout
this thesis the often contradictory relationship between the First Light
house as a Solar Decathlon entry and the First Light house as an energy
efficient ‘kiwi bach’ is explained. Broken into three parts the thesis looks
at the
passive design of the home and the optimization of the…

▼ This project described the
passive biomechanical properties of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit, which is less understood in the literature. Currently most work has been done on the
passive biomechanical aspect of human skeletal muscles only examined the elastic behaviour of human skeletal muscles, the effect of the viscous component was not considered. Therefore, the main aim of this project is to characterize the viscoelastic properties of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit by using quasi-linear viscoelastic theory, and further to model both elastic and viscous behaviours of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit in vivo under
passive conditions. The research project consists of four interrelated studies, which include 1) characterize the viscoelastic properties of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit by using quasi-linear viscoelastic theory; 2) characterize the stress-relaxation properties at the human ankle joint, which is important to be determined before applying quasi-linear viscoelastic theory; 3) review current techniques for estimating the muscle-tendon moment arm, and examine the validity of the measurement of gastrocnemius muscle-tendon moment arm length used in this project; 4) explore the intermuscular force transmission between the human medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit and soleus muscle-tendon unit in vivo under
passive conditions, which examine the validity of the assumption made in this project.

▼ The protection and management of valuable Earth orbits
and operational satellites for military, commercial and research
objectives is widely recognised as a task of urgency and
complexity. A critical component of this task is the tracking,
characterization and identification of these active satellites as
well as the space debris objects that pose a threat to them. As
such advances in methods and technologies to improve these
functions are constantly being investigated. One such broad method
being employed to enhance space situational awareness (SSA) is the
analysis of sunlight reflected from Earth-orbiting satellites.
There are a number of studies that have focussed on studying
variations in the intensity to learn more about a satellite???s
operational status and activity however there is very little
research on how the polarization of the reflected light could be
used to gain additional knowledge about the reflecting body. To
understand the utility of doing so as a means of characterizing
satellites and space debris objects, an experiment was designed and
conducted to gain insight into the trends of relative reflective
polarimetric behaviors of some common spacecraft construction
materials.
For this thesis, five material samples were studied:
two types of triple-junction photovoltaic cells, a bare 6061-T6
aluminum panel and a white-coated aluminum panel. The samples were
mounted on a goniometer in which the illumination and reflection
angles could be precisely controlled. The samples were then
illuminated with a collimated unpolarised white light meant to
simulate the Sun. The reflected light from the sample was then
analysed using a dichroic linear polariser and a charge-coupled
device (CCD) sensitive to optical wavelength light. From these
measurements, the Stokes parameters were determined and the degree
of linear polarisation and angle of polarisation calculated. The
resulting values were plotted to allow a qualitative assessment of
the trends in the polarimetric characteristics of each material
with respect to illumination and observation geometries.
The
findings from this research project yielded two significant
outcomes. First, the results provide a general understanding of how
the polarisation trends of the reflected light vary as the
illumination and observational geometry is changed. Second, the
polarisation trends differed between samples for a given
illumination and observational geometry. It can be concluded from
these results that studying the polarimetric characteristics of
light reflected from resident space objects can aid in their
characterization and ultimately contribute to the advancement of
gaining and maintaining SSA.

▼ Children learn language at a very young age without structured and planned help. To understand this language process, research into how children represent and produce grammar is necessary. This thesis examines whether, when learning their native language, children have the same abstract representation of grammar, building on the syntactic priming used in Bock and Loebell’s 1990 paper, one of the few that has recently focused on children.
To make the children describe cards in a simple but captivating way for them, the task was based on the traditional ‘snap’ game of cards played alone with the researcher. The game would be started by the researcher, and their cards included four different types of grammatical priming throughout the game. These were active (a lion squashing a doctor),
passive (a doctor being squashed by a lion), locative (a witch sleeping near a cat) and baseline (a witch sleeping) which were also used for the snap cards. The researcher and the child would describe their pictures to each other, with several snaps in between. The children also sat a British Picture Vocabulary Scale test to make sure all language vocabulary was roughly of the same standard.
Overall, children were more likely to use the same structure in their responses as the experimenter than to use different structure. This is also known as syntactic priming, (Bock, 1986). However, the locative priming from the researcher did not affect the child.
Therefore, this result means that children do have certain grammatical attributes which are independent from content, but they are not all clear-cut.

▼ High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems continue to be an excellent
asset in modern power systems, mainly for their ability to overcome the problems of AC
transmission, such as the interconnection of asynchronous grids, stability of long
transmission lines, and use of long cables for power transmission.
In the past 20 years, Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-HVDC transmission systems were
developed and installed in many projects, thereby adding more operational benefits to DC
transmission option, such as high controllability, ability to supply weak networks, and
reduced converter reactive power demand. Nevertheless, VSC-HVDC transmission suffers
from the disadvantages of high losses and cost.
In this research, a hybrid HVDC employing a Line Commutated Converter (LCC) as
rectifier and a VSC as inverter is used to supply a
passive network through a DC cable. The
hybrid system is best suited for unidirectional power transmission scenarios, such as power
transmission to islands and remote load centers, where the construction of new transmission
lines is prohibitively expensive. Control modes for the rectifier and inverter are selected and
implemented using Proportional Integral (PI) controllers. Special control schemes are
developed for abnormal operating conditions such as starting at light load and recovering
from AC network faults. The system performance under steady state and transient conditions
is investigated by EMTP-RV simulations. The results show the feasibility of the hybrid
system.

▼ The flow-excited acoustic resonance in shallow rectangular cavities can be a source of severe noise and/or excessive vibration. This phenomenon is excited when one of the acoustic modes in the accommodating enclosure is coupled with the flow instabilities resulting from the shear layer formation at the cavity mouth. In this thesis, two
passive methods for suppressing the flow-excited acoustic resonance phenomenon are addressed. The first
passive method considers the edge geometry effect on the phenomenon. Several edge geometries including chamfered, round, and different configurations of spoilers are considered. The effect of the spoilers dimensions is investigated to provide criteria that help designing and optimizing spoilers. Some of the spoilers are found to be effective in suppressing the acoustic resonance excitation, while some other edges including chamfered and round edges result in shifting the resonance excitations to higher velocities with amplification in the acoustic pressure. To enrich the understanding of the suppression mechanism introduced by these
passive methods, hotwire measurements are performed revealing the existence of orthogonal vortices interacting with the shear layer at the cavity mouth. The second
passive method investigated is the effect of placing a high frequency vortex generator (control cylinder) in vicinity of the upstream edge of the cavity on the acoustic resonance excitation. The method is investigated experimentally and numerically. The effectiveness of the control cylinder method is studied by investigating different cylinder diameters and locations on both horizontal and vertical directions. It is found that locating the cylinder at relatively small height from the bottom wall and with a distance of 25.4 mm upstream the leading edge can significantly suppress the resonance excitation. To further understand the interaction between the cylinder vortex shedding and the shear layer at the cavity mouth and the influence on the shear layer thickness, a 2D numerical simulation using K-epsilon and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) models has been carried out and compared to the experimental results. For both
passive methods, the study included two cavities with different aspect ratios (L/D=1.0 and L/D=1.67, L: cavity length, D: cavity depth) to address the effectiveness of the methods with respect to the cavity depth. The methods are investigated in flow with Mach number up to 0.45. All different configurations investigated are compared to the base case which is the bare cavity with sharp edges installed upstream and downstream.

▼ A Clinical Paper Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner
Smoking and secondhand smoke are harmful to health. As information about the negative affects has increased, so have regulations. Regulations are growing with the workplace becoming a primary target. The workplace is a particularly sensitive environment, potentially affecting the smoker's job security if the regulations are not adhered to. Sentinel studies, such as COMMIT and ASSIST, focused on the effect of policies and regulations on smoking reduction. They provided beneficial evidence in the light to moderate smoker, but failed to show benefits in the heavier smoker. The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of heavy smokers working in smoking regulated environments in order to understand their challenges and discover their adaptive mechanisms. This information can then be applied to the development of effective interventions. The theoretical framework for the study was Roy's Adaptation Model. It was applied with the nursing process to analyze behavior and evaluate the effectiveness of smoking regulations on the person's adaptability. A qualitative descriptive phenomenological method was utilized to gain information about the smokers' experiences. Regulated smokers were chosen through a nonrandomized, purposive sample method involving three types of worksites including: factory, medical facility, and restaurant. Ten individuals, 18 years of age or older, who smoked, on average, a minimum of 10 cigarettes a day, and worked at least 8 hours per day in a smoking regulated environment were included in the study. An open-ended survey was conducted with voluntary participants.
Measures were taken to ensure participant confidentiality and protection. The data was analyzed using Giorgi's method. Presenting themes served as the basis for future development of Nurse Practitioner interventions.

▼ Previous syntactic analyses of the bei-passive in
Chinese hold controversial stances on its true status — between a
topic construction and a genuine passive (e.g. Cann & Wu, 2011;
Her, 2009). This dissertation compares passivization across
languages and explores the issues of Cantonese bei-constructions
through corpora studies to examine the syntax and semantics of
Cantonese bei-passive.
The dissertation observes consistency in
cross-linguistic morphosyntactic alternations under canonical
passivization, including the realignment of semantic roles to
grammatical functions, valence reduction, alongside passive verbal
morphology. It also ferrets out commonalities between some
passive-like constructions and the canonical passive.
Based on
corpora studies, the present research has found that the most
frequent use of the Cantonese word bei2 is in the double object
construction. Less common uses include having it as a marker of the
indirect object, the permissive, and the passive, with its use as a
marker of the instrument being the least frequent. The dissertation
has found that the polysemous word bei2 can cause ambiguity and
restrict the co-occurrence of these uses.
The identity of the
Cantonese bei-passive construction being a genuine passive
structure is proven by the realignment of semantic roles to
grammatical functions and valence reduction. The dissertation
concludes that the unclear status of the bei-passive is engendered
by the absence of passive verbal morphology and case markers in
Cantonese. The corpora results evince that the Cantonese
bei-passive is predominantly adversative. The grammaticalization
path of the word bei2 as a passive marker is to be revisited in
future research.

▼ This dissertation derives a novel signal processing
framework that employs passive sonar to estimate the location of an
acoustic source. The approach relies on modeling acoustic
propagation, and is designed to estimate the location of a moving
source radiating a low frequency tonal signal in a shallow water
undersea environment. As the source moves through the ocean,
spatial variability in the acoustic field resulting from multi-path
propagation is mapped into temporal amplitude modulation of the
received signal. The received signal is measured using a single
hydrophone on the sea floor. The recorded amplitude modulation
contains information about source location that is encoded by
propagation effects. Unfortunately, accurate prediction of the
received signal amplitude modulation is complicated by significant
uncertainty regarding values of ocean environmental parameters that
acoustic propagation models are sensitive to. To increase
robustness against the resulting data-model mismatch, the
localization framework uses Monte Carlo acoustic propagation models
to estimate the acoustic field uncertainty resulting from
uncertainty about ocean environmental parameters. The acoustic
field uncertainty is represented with probability density
functions, which are calculated using parametric, maximum entropy
and kernel density estimators. The resulting probability density
functions capture prior knowledge about acoustic propagation and
environmental parameters without making unnecessary assumptions.
The localization framework uses a grid-based Bayesian approach to
recursively calculate the posterior probability density function of
source location based on Monte Carlo model results. The Bayesian
approach provides a principled method by which prior knowledge
about environmental parameters, source dynamics, source
characteristics, and acoustic propagation physics can be combined
with received acoustic data to calculate the most likely location
of a source. The result is a passive sonar signal processing
algorithm that uses acoustic propagation model results to estimate
the location of a moving source radiating a tonal signal in shallow
water based on the amplitude modulations recorded on a single
hydrophone. The localization framework derived in this dissertation
is distinct from Bayesian matched field processing in that it
neither relies on a vertical array nor computes modal amplitudes
from the received data. Results using SWellEx-96 Event S5 data are
shown for each step of the framework.

▼ Killer whales inhabiting coastal waters of the northeastern Pacific are listed under the Canadian Species at Risk Act, which requires the identification of critical habitats for the recovery of their populations. Little is known about their distribution during the winter and what areas are important for their survival during these months.
Passive acoustic monitoring is a valuable complementary method to traditional visual and photographic surveys although it has seldom been used to study killer whales and there are limitations in practice. There is a need to develop tools and protocols to maximize the efficiency of such studies. In this thesis, long-term acoustic data collected with autonomous recorders were analyzed 1) to assess the performance of two types of analysis (Manual and Long Term Spectral Averages) for detecting and identifying killer whale calls and to compare the effects of using two different duty cycles (1/3 and 2/3); and 2) to investigate the seasonal occurrence of different killer whale populations at two sites off the west coasts of Vancouver Island and Washington: Swiftsure Bank and Cape Elizabeth. Both the use of Long Term Spectral Averages and a lower duty cycle resulted in a decrease in call detection and resolution of call identification, leading to underestimations of the amount of time the whales spent at the site. A compromise between a lower resolution data processing method and a higher duty cycle (and vice-versa) is therefore suggested for future
passive acoustic monitoring studies of killer whales. Killer whale calls were detected on 186 days at Swiftsure Bank and on 39 days at Cape Elizabeth. The seasonal occurrence of killer whales at Swiftsure Bank highlights its importance as a killer whale hotspot, with year-round presence of Southern Residents and British Columbia Transients, Northern Residents in spring and fall, and California Transients on rare occasions. These results support the expansion of Southern Resident’s critical habitat to include Swiftsure Bank. Temporal habitat partitioning between Resident populations was observed at Cape Elizabeth, with Southern Residents detected from January through June and Northern Residents from July to September. These results show that Northern Residents use the southern parts of their range more frequently than previously thought. Both Transient populations were frequently detected throughout the year, suggesting habitat overlapping.

▼ For decades, biologists believed that animals walk because the brain calculates motion trajectories for their limbs. However, an alternative hypothesis on animal locomotion suggests the opposite. The animal framework is built to walk “naturally” and the dynamics work without relying on controls. Instead, the walking gait is simply generated by the interaction of gravity and inertia, establishing a stable, naturally emerging limit-cycle known as
passive dynamic walking. The feasibility of
passive dynamic walking has been demonstrated for a biped system consisting of only a pair of legs. This thesis examines full-body
passive dynamic walking models with simple and animal-like mechanical linkages that can generate walking gaits using only gravity that are able to recover from small perturbations without the need for controller input. The contribution of a torso to the stability and efficiency of
passive biped walking is also addressed. When an upper-body is added,
passive dynamic walking takes place on level ground but for energetic reasons, it is unstable. The second part of the thesis looks at how to stabilize the
passive walking trajectory on level ground in a physically feasible and biologically relevant way. Findings suggest that the role of locomotion control is to provide stability, rather than drive the limb onto a pre-calculated trajectory.

▼ The
Passive Voice is an important issue of English grammar. First I am going to analyze
the similiarities as well as the differences between the active and the
passive voice. I am
going to use several sources by O’Grady et al. (1993), Quirk et al. (1985), Huddleston and
Pullum (2002), Eastwood (1994), Cobuild (1990), Dixon (1992) and Alexander (1991), for
instance to illustrate the differences betwen the active and the
passive voice. Then I am going
to focus on the different types of
passive voice, like be- and get-passives, the short as well as
the long
passive, the verbal, prepositional, and adjectival
passive; the central passives, semipassives
and the pseudo-passives. In the fourth chapter of my thesis I am going to compare
the English
passive voice with the German
passive voice in terms of structure, use, and
contexts. In the last part of my analysis I am going to represent some websites dealing with
the
passive voice in order to see to what extent the
passive voice is covered on the Internet.

▼ My thesis revolves around structures that fall beyond the category of the active voice, i.e. the
passive voice and, using Suzanne Kemmer’s terminology, the middle voice, which bears the characteristics of both the active and the
passive voice.
I will first put under the metaphorical microscope the active and the
passive voice, analyzing which grammatical roles are associated with which semantic roles in each. I intend to demonstrate the alternation between the two voices in several Indo-European languages. After that I will present impersonal passives, a subcategory of the
passive voice in certain languages which concerns intransitive verbs with an agentive argument.
Passives having been scrutinized, I will go on to introduce the third voice which Suzanne Kemmer calls the middle voice. Using her data and observations, I will attempt to summarize her proposal with abundant examples from Indo-European languages, e.g.: French, Italian, German, Russian, Swedish and Spanish. I will also examine in what this third voice differs from the active and the
passive constructions, as well as the reason why it is justified to call these structures middle systems, rather than active or
passive structures. Besides, I will reflect on the event types that Kemmer associates the middle voice with.

▼ Motivated by the few work has done on the
performance measurement of graphene
passive devices compared to
graphene active devices, several different types of
passive devices
are fabricated and measured. In general, the fabricated devices are
divided into two parts: the DC devices and the RF devices, which
based on the different electrical properties we measure in Chapter
7.For the DC devices, attention has been given to the resistance of
CVD graphene that we later use in all the RF devices. The Dirac
point seems only appears in the exfoliated graphene measurement,
which is caused by the doping concentration difference between the
exfoliated and CVD graphene. Meanwhile, the sheet resistance of
graphene is calculated based on the four-point measurement. The
sheet resistance of CVD graphene is around 291 Ω/sqFor the RF
devices, the measurement is conducted on the two types of graphene
passive devices from 0-110 GHz. The first type of graphene devices
is the graphene CPW resonator. We measure the input impedances of
the graphene resonators on different substrates (Si/SiO2 and GaAs)
and with different graphene lengths (440 μm, 500 μm and 1415 μm).
For the graphene resonators on Si/SiO2 substrate, the input
impedance does show the resonance shift compared to the
graphene-removed structure. The frequency position of the resonance
that appears is consistent with the theoretical calculation result.
Besides, the influence of the external conditions such as
temperature on the performance of graphene resonators has been
investigated. The input impedance resonance shows the shift when
the external temperature varying from 40o C(313K) to 160o C (433K).
This measurement is undertaken with the graphene resonator on GaAs
substrate. The second type of graphene devices is the graphene CPW
transmission line on Si/SiO2 substrate. The S-parameters measured
from VNA reveal that graphene within the transmission line acts as
the transmission channel, which is a little lossy at the microwave
frequency range. The poor transmission is also partially caused by
the mismatching of the parasitic impedance, as well as the
substrate loss, which is verified by the comparison result between
the graphene transmission line and the graphene-removed
transmission line. Similarly, the concern on the signal line
coupling is also eliminated by using the graphene-removed
structure.

▼ This thesis provides a holistic approach to get constructions in English by combining a Minimalist, generative approach with the attention to usage and function found in a usage-based approach. First, a structural analysis is proposed which will answer the questions of how to account for (1) the different types of get in an accurate and unified manner (2) the ambiguous thematic roles of the
subject, and (3) the additional recipient argument position found in causative usages of get. Secondly, a grammaticalization account of the evolution of these different get constructions will be considered. A grammaticalization pathway will be established and then methods of formalizing this kind of grammaticalization process within a Minimalist framework will be investigated.

▼ Passive samplers can be used to determine time-integrated patterns of water chemistry at one or many locations throughout a stream network while minimizing cost and sampling time. A
passive flux meter (PFM) simultaneously estimates time-averaged water and solute mass fluxes in flowing water. PFMs have been used in groundwater to quantify contaminant flux but have been used only very recently in streams. In this study, PFMs were deployed in the surface and subsurface of headwater stream channels to examine the efficacy of the device to quantify mean concentrations of calcium, aluminum, and sulfur in streams of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, USA. In general, the PFM estimates of surface and subsurface stream chemistry were more accurate when flow rates were higher and more water passed through the PFM. During the lowest flows, PFMs overpredicted concentrations by 50 to 800%. In estimating calcium concentrations, 5 PFMs were within 10% of grab sample concentrations and 7 PFMs were within 30% of grab sample concentrations out of a total of 35 comparisons. Likewise, for sulfur concentrations, 4 PFMs were within 10% of grab sample concentrations and 7 PFMs were within 30% of grab sample concentrations out of 35 comparisons. Concentrations of aluminum were too low to be quantified above 90% confidence. PFMs calculated a lower cumulative discharge through the surface water PFMs than through the subsurface which may be explained by flow divergence around the sampler. Changes to PFM design and shorter deployment times are proposed to increase the efficacy of the PFM.

▼ The modern world has forgotten a crucial part of what historically has been a beautiful experience in our homes: its connection to the planet. This thesis proposes a mix-use building that acts as an instrument to connect the users with the planet while maintaining contemporary standards of living. I believe that human beings have an innate tendency to connect with nature. The building design will have a
passive aspect that is experiential and the active aspect that is functional. The spaces come alive through design by translating the planets four elements as a part of the daily lives of the users, activating the Fifth element, the Spirit. Connecting with nature on a fundamental level will enhance the inhabitants experience and create a connection with the planet through the spaces we inhabit.
