▼ The Watershed Education Network (WEN) is a nonprofit environmental education program that aims to foster knowledge, appreciation, and awareness of watershed health through water-based education programs and field science experiences. Their Fish Week program for 7th graders at Washington Middle School has an overarching theme of watershed and ecosystem health and includes an introduction to aquatic invertebrates, native fish, fish habitats, bugs and dry fly comparison, and an introduction to fly fishing. This is a formative, outcome-based evaluation of the Fish Week program. I used pre and post program survey data from 2017 and 2018 as well as survey data from 8th grade students who participated in Fish Week in 2019 compared to a control group who did not. I also conducted interviews with teachers and WEN volunteers who have participated in Fish Week. Overall, students gained watershed knowledge from participating in Fish Week. Student values were the same for 8th graders who participated in Fish Week and those that did not, however, self-reported positive environmental behaviors were slightly higher for students who had participated in Fish Week. Secondarily, this professional project aims to develop tools for future evaluation of Fish Week. I recommend that WEN change their pre and post program survey to focus on what students liked and disliked about Fish Week as well as how their values and behaviors changed after Fish Week. I developed a new survey as well as a knowledge assessment for WEN and teachers who are interested in what students learn during Fish Week. I also developed a new teacher survey and volunteer survey. This will help their evaluation in the future.

▼ Outdoor education is a formal part of the New Zealand school curriculum under the auspices of Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC). Anecdotally New Zealand parents and teachers are becoming more risk averse as a result of high profile fatalities associated with
outdoor recreation. Consequently, it is important to understand how risk is perceived by parents and teachers and what influence it may be having on participation rates and programming for
outdoor education. Views on perceived risk were gained from teachers with responsibilities related to EOTC (n=276) and parents from primary and intermediate school boards of trustees (n=534) via an online self-reply questionnaire. Eleven semi-structured telephone interviews were also conducted with key informants from providers of
outdoor education to these schools. Higher levels of the risk of serious harm perceived by teachers (moderate risk compared with low risk for parents) are likely to be related to a greater emphasis on and increased discourse around safety in EOTC and their responsibility for the safety of children in their school when undertaking
outdoor education activities. Accidents and fatalities reported in the media increased parental anxiety, but only resulted in isolated cases of parents preventing their children from participating in
outdoor education programmes. A small proportion of schools (8%) responded to accidents and fatalities reported in the media by reducing
outdoor education programmes. Aversion to water activities in
outdoor education by some schools was shown and is likely symptomatic of high perceived risk of the aquatic environment.
Outdoor activities such as canoe sports on rivers and climbing/abseiling from cliffs were perceived to be the most risky activities by both parents and teachers. There were isolated cases of parents, and sometimes, whole schools cancelling
outdoor education trips for children. These were seized on by the media as documented proof of “wrapping children in cotton wool”, “paranoid parenting” and other phenomenon implying parents or teachers are risk averse to an unhealthy degree. This study has provided empirical data showing that the vast majority of parents and teachers do not respond in a risk averse way as a result of high profile fatalities associated with
outdoor recreation.

▼ The study is of qualitative research method, where the interviews are the main material for the study. This study aims to analyze teachers and pupils perspectives on outdoor education in the early years of the elementary school. The main reason for this study is that all the literature in the area tends to lift up the positive aspects of the field. While the practice of education tends to go the other way, where the majority of our children’s classes takes place inside the classrooms. Thus we are left with a contradictory school environment. To examine the reasons why outdoor education gets the role (or lack of role) it gets I have formed these questions as guidelines: In what way does teachers use outdoor education? Where does the school board stand in the issue? How do teachers reflect on their own teacher training, and what role did outdoor education play? What do the students think about outdoor education? What perspectives of the term “learning” do the students have?
The result of the study is that the lack of education for the teachers, and the fear of not having the time to do all that needs to be done lead to a culture in schools where outdoor education gets prioritized beneath other forms of learning, thus gets a lower status.

▼ This project was created to increase awareness of the importance of
outdoor recreation and physical activity in young peoples??? lives, along with providing a website and resources that could be used in starting up a high school
outdoor club in any school. This project was designed to expose the importance of enjoyable physical activity and how schools have a responsibility to provide this for the student body. It set up a structured website where others would be able to go online and use the resources provided on the site to become successful in implementing an
outdoor adventure club in their own school. Life can be busy and hectic, and I know that for me, the easier things are, the more likely they are to get done. I tried to do and document as much of the groundwork in this project as possible, so that others could make progress more quickly. This way it will be easier for them and more likely that others will begin an
outdoor adventure club for their own school one day.

▼ The advent of the Scottish ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ created a new paradigm of outdoor education. The term ‘outdoor learning’ found more common parlance as a reflection of contemporary discourse with renewed focus on curricular breadth and progression in outdoor education. This thesis examines these changes through the lens of educational policy analysis. The study bridges the gaps between literature in the fields of outdoor education, public policy making and curriculum theory to present a broad and historical analysis of the processes for the policy development of outdoor learning in Scotland. The methodological approach is grounded in the philosophy of pragmatism, and combines desk based research with data analysis of thirteen interviews with key policy actors. The findings identify health as an early policy driver and a prelude to later policy agendas including ‘character training’, work and employment. The processes for change in outdoor education policy are influenced by ‘galvanising events’ and via a ‘policy corridor’ of outdoor education advocates. Post Scottish devolution, the work of advisory groups has been a key influence in resolving what is identified as a ‘policy squeeze’ on outdoor learning. The research has implications for effective lobbying and understanding the processes for policy growth in outdoor learning.

▼ Application of
outdoor education to cultural and natural heritage issues has received very little attention to date. While research in the fields of heritage and culture/nature relations addresses the connections between cultures, environments and societies, this is largely neglected in
outdoor education studies. Therefore, the overall aim of this research is to establish the possibility of raising awareness of the importance of and teaching about natural and cultural heritage through
outdoor education. The research addresses the potentiality of combining
outdoor, environmental and heritage fields for an interdisciplinary support for heritage education. To achieve this aim the following objectives have been identified: to discuss the main theories behind interdisciplinarity and
outdoor education; to establish the possible connection between the aspects offered by
outdoor education and the enhanced cognitive and affective domains of learning; and to discuss various projects taking place out-of-doors, with the focus on adventure, field studies and creative activities. This research is based mainly on the theories of interdisciplinarity, as well as of the main concepts behind
outdoor education. In my research I drew on literature from
outdoor, environmental and heritage education, cultural, environmental, field and art studies, and educational theories to explore whether these disciplines might work together to engage wider public in heritage sector through the use of informal, fun and creative
outdoor learning offered by the pedagogical approach of
outdoor education.

▼ As industrial technology advances, man-made noise has increasingly contributed to natural soundscapes. To predict how anthropogenic noise can affect natural environments, engineers build acoustic models over a given terrain; however, many current models are not compatible with common Geographic Information System (GIS) software and become outdated due to software version updates, or are written as proprietary packages unavailable to park management. The goal of this study was to create a true open source
outdoor sound propagation model compatible with (but not dependent on) outside GIS software. The model was developed using algorithms from ISO 9613-2, an international standard for attenuation of sound during propagation outdoors. The standard accounts for uneven terrain, atmospheric absorption, screening, wind effects, and ground effects; however, the scope of this thesis is limited to the initial three attenuation factors. Geometric and atmospheric attenuation were directly translatable to a three-dimensional terrain. Additional software was developed in order to translate the two-dimensional screening algorithms for simple terrains to three-dimensional complex terrains. Given sound source inputs and locations over an input Digital Elevation Map, GIS compatible file types of spatially explicit sound pressure level predictions were produced by this model. The model was tested using simple simulated terrains of known ISO 9613-2 cases: one barrier and two barriers. Additionally, the model produced preliminary results using real terrain data and natural gas compressor noise as the sound source. Sound maps were displayed over satellite imagery of the sound pressure level data, and a correlation of visitor acceptability to the sound. The results produced by this work demonstrate a preliminary version of an open-source
outdoor sound predictive tool with the capability of mapping visitor experience.

▼ Outdoor thermal comfort is key to creating vibrant
outdoor urban spaces. The built form is able to modify solar radiation and wind. However, there is currently no way of considering the effect of the built form on thermal comfort when designing a new development based on the environmental factors – wind, solar radiation, and ambient temperature. Current practice for designing
outdoor thermal comfort is based on simple design guidelines, and knowledge of local wind and sun patterns.
A Process for Predicting
Outdoor Thermal Comfort has been developed. This predicts thermal comfort based on solar radiation, wind, and ambient temperature using The Wellington Comfort Index. The process is able to predict comfort at a single point within a proposed urban development using specialised computer programs. Through predicting how the combination of solar radiation, wind, and ambient temperature will affect comfort, improvements can be made to comfort during the design phase.
The aim of this thesis project is to develop the Process for Predicting
Outdoor Thermal Comfort into a Comfort Tool for use at the preliminary design stage of a development. The intended users of the tool are professionals working in urban planning and architecture, such as designers and consultants who have experience with three-dimensional modelling and simulation programs.
A case study research approach was used to test The Comfort Tool’s ability to inform design changes through communicating thermal comfort across a proposed development. A range of case studies were selected with different built forms. This was to test if The Comfort Tool can predict comfort in case studies with different levels of solar radiation and wind at pedestrian level due to the variations in the built forms.
This research confirmed that a tool can be developed for predicting comfort across a proposed development, which can also test proposed design changes for their success during the design phase. However, further investigation is needed to determine whether The Wellington Comfort Index can be used in other cities.

▼ Abstract
The issue of human-nature relationships has become increasingly important given the environmental issues affecting the world. Thus, education which can encourage students to positively engage and connect with the world around them is vital.
Outdoor education offers one way to help build relationships, but only if
outdoor educators have an understanding and appreciation of the ways 'the outdoors' influences their pedagogy. Over the years, growing emphasis on adventure activities, social and personal development, and experiential learning styles, has subsumed the role of 'the outdoors' within
outdoor education.
Using an interpretive narrative framework, this research focuses on 'the outdoors' as a defining feature of
outdoor education. A series of three semi-structured interviews with 11
outdoor educators provided opportunities to explore meanings of the outdoors and how those meanings influenced their understandings and practices of
outdoor education. An inductive analysis of the interviews identified five primary themes; locations, activities, living simply, emotional responses, and relationships, and these were used to unpack the participants' beliefs and experiences of 'the outdoors' and
outdoor education. In order to retain the richness and complexity of the meanings the participants shared, the findings are presented in a variety of formats including vignettes and poetic text.
The findings are multi-layered, something that reflected the dynamic nature of 'the outdoors' and the ensuing opportunities offered for creative and critical thinking. There was also evidence that the participants were vigilant about adopting a multi-dimensional approach to
outdoor education. This required integrating pragmatic pro-environmental actions, experiential opportunities, challenge activities, spontaneous learning moments, and quiet time into many of their sessions. In so doing, they ensured experiences for their students were holistic, meaningful, and engaging, as well as promoting a respectful relationship with 'the outdoors'. Some of these practices were constrained at times by the expectations of current secondary school educational orthodoxies, especially those relating to assessing pre-determined outcomes. Nonetheless, there was an unreserved belief that
outdoor education has an increasingly distinct and important role to play in the school curriculum. How this will be enacted depends on the challenges and opportunities that rise and fall with changing social, political, and economic agendas.

Mathematics is a subject that is widely used outdoors, but there are mainly tips and ideas for how it is carried out, and less information about what scientific basis it is conducted on. The purpose of the study is to increase the understanding of the research field, with a focus on the implementation of outdoor mathematics and why the field is favorable. The method used to answer the purpose is a systematic literature study. The result shows that there are three main themes for implementing outdoor mathematics, which are to use the environment, to use tools and to organize outside mathematics in a certain way. These have sub-themes that are to explore nature in the surrounding areas, gardening, digital tools, natural objects, cross-cutting topics and combination of indoors & outdoors. The results also show that it is beneficial to conduct outdoor mathematics for students as it improves their learning, they get positive experiences, they are involved and motivated, and the personal development is positively affected. For teachers, this is beneficial as it leads to increased flexibility as well as increased self-confidence and increased competence.

▼ The purpose of this thesis was to explore the
potential of a designed physical
outdoor environment to improve the
social environment and thereby enhance the psychological healing
process at Psychiatric institutions. Weskoppies Psychiatric
Hospital situated in Pretoria West served as a model for testing
the hypothesis. The physical and social environment at Weskoppies
was analyzed through observations, interviews and literature
research. Findings from analysis and theoretical research regarding
the influences that physical and social
outdoor environments have
on mental health, were synthesized to establish design guidelines.
These informed the design decision making process and assisted in
the proposal of an
outdoor environment with emotional healing
potential. An open space framework and catalytic sketch plan was
designed to illustrate the application of the design guidelines.
The author found that an
outdoor environment that encourage
independence, purpose, consciousness, rest, connectedness and
physical activities have the potential to enhance the psychological
healing process. The open space framework and sketch plan proved
that these guidelines can be accommodated on different scales.

▼ This study examined the effectiveness of four college orientation programs on social self-efficacy beliefs among 158 college students. It was hypothesized that an outdoor orientation would increase social self-efficacy more than an on-campus orientation, and that an orientation with facilitated reflection would increase social selfefficacy more than a traditional orientation. Students chose between an on-campus and a wilderness-based orientation. Then, the students were randomly selected into a control or treatment group within both the on-campus and wilderness orientations. Outdoor orientations involved multiple days of a specific adventure activity (i.e., rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, mountaineering) located away from the college campus. These wilderness settings provide an environment that pushes students into social interactions, which can positively increase social self-efficacy. On the other hand, on-campus orientations involved speeches, skits, group initiatives, academic advising, and other activities located on the college campus. The treatment for both wilderness based and on-campus orientations consisted of the same daily activities as the control group; however, at the end of the second day the treatment groups participated in facilitated reflective provided by the orientation staff. This allowed students to learn from each other and see other student's perspectives, which can increase social self-efficacy. Students in all four orientations increased their social self-efficacy scores; however, significant differences between orientations types were not found. Although the two hypotheses were not supported, both on-campus and wilderness orientations were found to increase social self-efficacy.

▼ Youth environmental education (EE) is at least 40 years old and
outdoor education is even older (Carter & Simmons, 2010). While few studies have documented the lasting impacts of these programs on youth participants as they have grown into adulthood, the broad goals of environmental education to inspire and enable life-long environmental stewardship necessitate such long-term research. Retrospective studies with environmentalists and environmental educators, as well as with the general public, suggest that childhood experiences in nature are linked to adult environmental attitudes and behaviors (Wells, & Lekies, 2012). These studies provide conceptual support for
outdoor and environmental education, but do not document the lasting impacts of specific programs. This dissertation expands on prior research in interpretation (i.e., Knapp, 2007), investigating what past participants remember from a residential
outdoor environmental education (ROEE) program, and draws on a new body of literature to explore how participants use these memories in subsequent years. The first article (chapter) is a literature review that summarizes and critiques (1) studies broadly focused on life experiences that have influenced adult environmental attitudes and behaviors and (2) long-term evaluations of interpretive,
outdoor education, and environmental education programs. The second article reports data from 45 retrospective interviews with adults who participated in a fifth-grade ROEE program between 1958 and 1992. This paper focuses on what participants remember from the experience, looking specifically at the characteristics of remembered program components. Experiences that were active, offered opportunities for iii achievement, involved social interactions, and were both distinctive and applicable at home were found to be particularly memorable. The third article in this dissertation considers how people use their memories of ROEE, reporting the results of 54 retrospective interviews at two research sites with teens who had attended ROEE programs five years earlier. The psychological literature suggests that autobiographical episodic memories serve directive, social, and self functions (Bluck, 2003), and this dissertation research documents memories of ROEE being used to understand and appreciate wild nature, to direct
outdoor recreation and environmental conservation behaviors, and to reminisce with friends. Considered together, the research presented in this dissertation offers insight into how current educators can design memorable programs and then encourage memory use. References Bluck, S. (2003). ▼ What purpose does outdoor education (OE) serve? What are the overall objectives of outdoor education programs, and are these objectives helping students connect with the environment around them? These are fundamental questions that need to be raised in order to provide outdoor education opportunities that are meaningful and enjoyable, and that encourage environmental sustainability among students.
Currently, in Ontario, there is no official Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum document for OE. In order for schools to offer OE, they must draw expectations from the physical education curriculum at the desired grade level. Thus, since there is no specific OE curriculum, students may not be receiving the teachings of OE such as being made aware of and learning how to appreciate the local environment, which may in turn prevent understandings of environmental sustainability. This thesis uses policy analysis to examine two curriculum documents that address the following research questions:
1. Does the course PPL30 in the Health and Physical Education (OME, 2000a) curriculum policy document include Overall Expectations that encourage knowledge about the practice of environmental sustainability?
2. Does the Native Studies (OME, 2000b) curriculum policy document, specifically the course within this document titled “Aboriginal Beliefs, Values, and Aspirations in Contemporary Society, Grade 11, College Preparation,” include Overall Expectations that encourage knowledge about the practice of environmental sustainability?
Furthermore, this thesis references two Ontario policy documents that provide additional information about incorporating environmental sustainability throughout the curriculum: Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow: A Policy Framework for Environmental Education in Ontario Schools (2009) and Ontario First Nation, Metis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework (2007).

▼ Many natural resources with great potential for
outdoor recreation, in Ethiopia, are not studied well and are
subject for various kinds of pollution that may even lead them to irreversible damages. Lake Hawassa, no different from this, is a source of natural attraction and a great place for
outdoor recreation. But various problems and different values of the Lake are hindering its sustainability as a place where people can recreate
outdoor. Hence a study of its value as an
outdoor recreational area is necessary and this study uses the Individual Travel Cost Method (ITCM) of environmental valuation technique for this purpose. Therefore with the main objective of estimating the
outdoor recreational value of Lake Hawassa, 155 on site visitor samples were surveyed using a face to face interview. From the results age, travel cost and income were found to be significant determinants of demand for
outdoor recreation while the other socio economic variables were insignificant. Using the Truncated Poisson Model (TPM) of regression the individual and total annual
outdoor recreational benefit of Lake Hawassa was estimated to be Birr 446.3626 and Birr 72,572,760.12 respectively; while the individual and total annual consumer surplus was estimated to be Birr 227.8583 and Birr 37,046,811.82. Based on the results it is suggested that both the city administration and potential investors should use the result of the study as a base for current and future investment decisions. In addition, as the health of the lake, the flora and fauna species are being endangered by pollution of various types, care has to be given by all and there should be the enactment and implementation of policies and rules that hinder polluting activities and encourage protection of the lake to make sure the sustainable use of the resource.

Re-envisioning the status quo: Developing sustainable approaches to outdoor education in Aotearoa New Zealand

▼ We live in a world characterised by significant environmental degradation issues, increasing social inequality, and economic uncertainty. These pressing issues compel an active response from all sectors of our society to work towards a more sustainable future. The role that education, and more specifically
outdoor education, has in this response is an important one. This thesis, therefore, explores how school-based
outdoor learning experiences can more effectively educate for a sustainable future. Guided by an eco-justice and sustainability theoretical framework this critical qualitative research engaged eight teachers in ethnographic and participatory action research which attempted to challenge the status quo and re-envision sustainable
outdoor education pedagogies in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This research revealed concepts of
outdoor education to be contested and influenced by deep cultural assumptions such as anthropocentrism, individualism, and consumerism. The transformative intent of this project stimulated pedagogical change for teachers which included: increasing understandings of sustainability, adopting more sustainable approaches to resource use and programming, and developing innovative teaching and learning strategies. Attempts to re-envision
outdoor education through sustainability included initiatives such as: focusing on connection to place, utilising cross-curricular approaches to learning and assessment, and developing underlying programme philosophies with a sustainability focus. However, there remains tension surrounding conceptual disparities in teachers’ understandings of sustainability and silences on social justice issues within their thinking and practices. This research also revealed the limitations of current
outdoor education practices, even those with a sustainability focus, to influence students’ attitudes and behaviours towards sustainable action. Enhancing students’ ability to love and care for local and degraded environments, as well as the distant and ‘pristine’ environments where
outdoor learning experiences often occur, is a further challenge for sustainable
outdoor education pedagogies.

▼ The importance of student perspectives in curriculum innovations is well established. Until recently accounts of adolescent male experiences during a place-responsive education (PRE) programme have not been extensively researched within
outdoor education literature. This research aims to address this gap in our knowledge by investigating the following two questions:
• What are student perspectives of a PRE approach to an
outdoor education trip?
• Is a PRE approach an appropriate pedagogy for senior level
outdoor education in Secondary Schools in New Zealand?
A group of Year 12 and 13 (16 to 18 years old) male students, enrolled in a senior level
outdoor education programme, were asked to give their perspectives on a PRE trip. This thesis utilised photo-elicitation interviews as a means to gain students’ perspectives on their experiences. Students were provided with cameras and asked to take photographs to demonstrate what the trip was like for them. After the trip interviews were conducted with four participants. The interviews revealed seven themes which support PRE as a possible alternative to traditional pursuit-driven approach utilised in my school’s existing programmes.
PRE is multi-disciplinary approach focusing on exploring local places to establish a connection for students, this connection is then available to encourage and engage students. The findings of this study showed students engaged and connected with local places in a meaningful way which increased motivation, personal and social development, and positive agency within the community of those on the trip. The students’ interview comments supported the use of less risky activities, slow travel methods and the use of sensory exploration encouraged by PRE allowing them to learn from the situations in which they found themselves.
The use of photo-elicitation interviews as a research method for research with young males is discussed. Providing students with cameras proved to be an engaging and effective way for students to be a part of academic research.
This study contributes to the emerging literature on PRE within senior level
outdoor education in New Zealand secondary schools, as well as to the role of student perspectives within research on curriculum innovation.

▼ Sustainability, place and human connectedness have increasingly become the focus of research and professional dialogue in school-based
outdoor education in Aotearoa New Zealand. These developments challenge traditional practices that privilege adventure and individualistic outcomes in
outdoor education. At the same time, the implementation of culturally responsive practices within many secondary schools has further challenged teachers of
outdoor education to ensure that pedagogical approaches and outcomes meet the needs of their diverse student population. An increasing number of educators appear to have adopted place responsive and culturally responsive pedagogies within their
outdoor education programmes or units of work at the senior school level, yet there is limited research examining teachers’ perceptions and experiences in doing so.
Adopting an interpretive framework, and using qualitative research methods, this research focuses on the challenges faced and opportunities presented when secondary school teachers in Aotearoa New Zealand adopt place and culturally responsive pedagogies in
outdoor education. Six teachers of senior level
outdoor education from schools spread throughout Aotearoa New Zealand shared their stories. An inductive analysis of the interviews identified these teachers faced ongoing challenges with adopting new pedagogies in
outdoor education, which was in part because many colleagues held perceptions that
outdoor education was less important than other subjects and was primarily about having fun. In addition, the complexities of assessment at the senior level meant that teachers often faced challenges in formally assessing student learning. Teachers also found that undertaking change required shifts in mind-set which were further supported by targeted professional development, engagement in post-graduate study and talking with like-minded teachers. However, teachers’ adoption of place and culturally responsive approaches generated notable opportunities to align to the front end of the New Zealand curriculum, promote the holistic development of students and nurture cultural diversity.
This study highlights that undertaking curriculum and pedagogical change in
outdoor education in secondary schools is a complex process, which is greatly influenced by the attitudes and perceptions of others. The potential alignment of place responsive and culturally responsive pedagogies became apparent, as did the need for more targeted professional development for teachers of
outdoor education. Teachers’ adoption of these pedagogies also highlighted a greater capacity for authentic
outdoor education experiences for students that also strengthened a commitment to their bicultural partnerships in schools. As the nature of education changes in schools, contemporary pedagogies in
outdoor education have the potential to enhance the capacity of schools to facilitate learning that will meet the diverse needs of learners in Aotearoa New Zealand.

▼ This dissertation consists of three essays on meta-analysis, benefit transfer and recreation use valuation. The first two essays were based on the sportsfishing valuation literature in the US and Canada while the third essay was based on a study
site in the Philippines and selected study sites from the US. The first essay evaluates the aggregation structure of primary research studies and its implications for benefit transfer using meta-regression analysis. Results indicate that single-site and regional studies should not be pooled without accounting for their differences in a metaanalysis. The second essay examines the implications of addressing dependency in the sportsfishing valuation literature using meta-regression analysis. Results indicate that median absolute percentage transfer error is lower for the meta-regression models based on a single value, i.e. average-set and best-set metadata than the meta-regression
models based on all-set. The average-set and best-set are two treatments of the metadata for avoiding dependency. The third essay applies the methodological treatments learned from the first two essays to estimate the recreational value via benefit transfer of Taal Volcano Protected Landscape in the Philippines. Results show that single point estimate transfer worked better than the meta-regression benefit function transfer. Recommendations based from the three essays include: 1) the need
to account for aggregation differences among primary studies to minimize biased value estimates in benefit transfer depending on policy settings; 2) the importance to correct for dependency and other methodological pitfalls in meta-regression is always
warranted; 3) metadata sample selection is best guided by the goals of the metaanalysis and perceived allowable errors in benefit transfer applications; and 4) the conduct of primary study is still the first best strategy to recreation use valuation, given time and resources.

▼ With Challenge Course programs increasing nationally and internationally the need for accountable, comprehensive certification training is necessary. Currently the ACCT (Association of challenge Course Technology) has established certification training standards that only ACCT accredited venders are sanctioned to provide. This study developed a written testing instrument designed to meet the current standard requirements of ACCT certification training with content approval from a panel of experts in the challenge course training industry. The test was administered to subjects in three groups with distinctly different training experience. One group received instruction from a professional company accredited by ACCT to provide certification training. The second group received instruction from a university-based training curriculum. The third group had received no formal training but was experienced in challenge course participation. Results of the study showed that the professionally trained and university trained groups scored 97% and 87% respectively exceeding the 80% standard requirement for ACCT written test performance. The untrained group scored 57%. Results of the study concluded that a non-vendor specific written testing instrument can be developed in accordance with ACCT requirements categorically meeting all protocol, and that training can be provided by both professional vendors and university-based programs meeting current ACCT standards.

▼ College is a time in many young adults’ lives when they are challenging their previous beliefs, learning new norms, and trying different activities. Once on campus, students are able to choose to participate in various clubs. At the University of Vermont (UVM),
outdoor clubs are especially popular, but the culture of these types of groups has not been studied very extensively. In this study, using both quantitative and qualitative methods, I examine the culture – the goals, norms, and language – of the clubs and how club membership is experienced by the member leaders. These clubs constitute a contested site as they bring together a traditionally male-dominated activity – risk-taking adventure in the outdoors – with a group of youth poised to challenge traditional gender norms and expectations. This thesis presents a sociological analysis of the culture of two
outdoor clubs, the Outing Club and Kayak Club, on the University of Vermont campus, with a specific focus on three elements of the clubs: leadership, language, and gender.

▼ Outdoor recreation programmes (ORP) have the potential to assist in the rehabilitation and community reintegration process for individuals recovering from spinal cord injury (SCI). Previous evidence provides support for the use of meaningful recreation, leisure activities, and physical exercise in the maintenance of health and development of self-efficacy, peer support and socialisation, thus assisting individuals with SCI to reintegrate back into their communities. However, there are few studies that evaluate the lived experience of individuals with SCI participating in ORPs and the potential benefits of these programmes. A qualitative study using constructivist grounded theory was chosen to gain an understanding of the personal experiences of individuals with SCI who attend these programmes and the influence the programme had on their lives.
Eight individuals with SCI who attended an ORP were interviewed twice using semi-structured in-depth interviews. The first interview occurred at the beginning of the ORP and the second interview took place approximately three months following completion of the ORP. Interview data were supplemented by field notes from observation of the participants on the ORPs. From the data collected a model was developed to reflect the key themes and concepts that represented the participants’ experiences and perceptions of attending an ORP. Overall, the participants’ experience was positive. The model depicted three stages in the overall gains made from attending an ORP. These included: immediate benefits, secondary consequences and real life consequences. Three key themes emerged as being the immediate benefits: i) ‘Gaining knowledge and skills’, ii) ‘Learning from peers’ and iii) ‘Pushing boundaries’. These immediate benefits contributed to the secondary consequences: iv) ‘Building confidence’ and v) ‘Self discovery’. The secondary consequences enabled the participant to vi) ‘Get out there’ and participate more following completion of the programme, with increased options in life and therefore to vii) ‘Live and reclaim life’. These latter themes are considered to reflect the real life consequences of attending the ORP.
The overall substantive theory that emerged from this study was how attendance at the ORP contributed to the participants with SCI reclaiming and living their lives. The participants indicated they had benefited physically and psychologically from attendance, with the combination of these gains enabling them to engage more actively in social, recreational and vocational pursuits. This resulted in each individual beginning to reclaim or succeeding in reclaiming and living their lives. The participants felt that they now had opportunities and options in their lives.
Clinically the data collected in this study and the theory that emerged from the data will enable funders and providers of rehabilitation services to consider ORP as a beneficial adjunct to the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals with SCI, especially for those individuals who have struggled to…

▼ Relatively little research exists on the life significance of outdoor education (OE) programs and courses. There is increasing interest in the OE field to move beyond simply focusing on program-specific outcomes to developing more evidence-based models that analyze the influence of specific mechanisms of change. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the significant life effect of a university OE course upon participants after the course, including the effect of the course upon participants’ intrapersonal, interpersonal and environmental relationships. The present investigation was a two part qualitative-quantitative study. The overarching research question was: What is the perceived life significance of a university undergraduate OE course? The current study involved in-depth interviews with a purposive intensity sample of 17 University of Ottawa alumni who had taken one of the university’s OE courses more than 20 years ago, followed by a web-based survey questionnaire completed by 46 University of Ottawa alumni and students who had taken one of the university’s OE courses between 1975 and 2009. Some of the survey participants had taken both the summer and winter OE courses offered by the University of Ottawa so there was a total of 65 separate course responses in the quantitative study. The findings from this study suggested that the OE course led to development of interpersonal skills, self-discovery, environmental impacts, leisure style change, and increased outdoor knowledge and skills amongst the participants. The idea that this outdoor knowledge and skills was transferred to others (e.g., students and children) also emerged from the data. In addition, in some instances participants expressed the idea that the OE course helped confirm or reinforce already-held beliefs about the outdoors. It is hopeful that the current findings can contribute to OE professional practice and demonstrate the need for OE in university settings.
