▼ The study examined the effect of active scenario-based training on the knowledge and self-efficacy of instrument rated pilots who were not instrument current. Additionally, this study addressed an issue that was not present in the existing literature by validating the potential of using at-home personal computer scenario-based simulation for instrument currency. The current method of maintaining instrument currency does not require any context or scenario-based training. At a minimum, a pilot must perform a specific number of instrument approaches and holds in an airplane, approved simulator, or training device. Sixty-two non-current instrument rated pilots who represented the U.S. general aviation pilot population participated in the study. The participants were divided into three experimental groups, where each group received a different training method with varying levels of active learning. The first group experienced passive learning (only reading), the second group experienced some active learning (flying simulated approaches), and the third group experienced the highest degree of active learning (flying approach scenarios requiring decisions). Before and after the training, each of the participants took knowledge tests and self-efficacy questionnaires as a measure of training effectiveness. The results show that the increase of knowledge scores between pre-training and post-training was significant regardless of training type, F(1,57) = 184.977, p < .001, η2 = .764. Additionally, the results show that the increase in self efficacy scores between pre-training and post-training was significant, F(1, 57) = 299.409, p < .001, η2 = .840. The increase in self-efficacy score was significant between the passive method of training, reading, and the most active method of training full scenarios with decision making involved, t(38) = -2.653, p = .012, r = .395. Using active learning through personal computer-based flight scenarios is an effective method of refresher training for instrument rated pilots who are not instrument current.

▼ Effective and efficient operations management is the cornerstone of any company's success. Presently, because of cost-cutting pressures, all investors look out for companies' operations before making any investment commitment. The South African Government (through the Department of Public Enterprises), as an owner and investor in Eskom, is looking at optimising operational excellence within state-owned enterprises like Eskom. Eskom is presently experiencing problems with increased electricity consumption which it cannot meet due to the limited plant capacity it presently has. These challenges are forcing Eskom to be more efficient and effective in management of the present plant assets (like Matimba Power Station) it presently operates. Matimba Power Station has consistently shown improvement in the areas of plant, financial and operations performance over the last three years. It is presently the standard bearer for the whole Eskom in terms of plant and operational performance. Asset management (through maintenance and management thereof), especially preventative management with in a power utility like Eskom, is a critical factor because supply (generation of electricity) has to meet demand (consumption of electricity) instantaneously as electricity cannot be saved. The planning, scheduling and execution of maintenance (through a work management process) to ensure success of business operations are very critical. An Eskom document titled Routine Work Management Manual emphasised the criticality of preventative management and included a six-step process of work management within the power generation business. The Japanese success in ensuring that operations costs are limited by implementing total productive maintenance (which includes work management) is suggested in the study as a way to go for operational success at Matimba Power Station. Many of the research studies done at Eskom in regard to maintenance were based on and confined to a sampling population of senior staff members like managers, engineers and supervisors. Experience has shown that progress of implementing change (whether in systems or structures) is slow if there was no proactive involvement of all participants and stakeholders, especially employees at lower levels involved in operations. A work management process, which is one of the pillars of total productive maintenance, was recently implemented at Matimba and is currently experiencing teething problems which are being attended to. Employee involvement in making sure of the success of work management is critical. The study investigates the implementation of work management from the employees' perspective in order to address problems for possible full implementation of total productive maintenance.

▼ This dissertation develops a new methodology and associated solution tools to achieve optimal operations and maintenance strategies for wind turbines, helping reduce operational costs and enhance the marketability of wind generation. The integrated framework proposed includes two optimization models for enabling decision support capability, and one discrete event-based simulation model that characterizes the dynamic operations of wind power systems. The problems in the optimization models are formulated as a partially observed Markov decision process to determine an optimal action based on a wind turbine's health status and the stochastic weather conditions. The rst optimization model uses homogeneous parameters with an assumption of stationary weather characteristics over the decision horizon. We derive a set of closed-form expressions for the optimal policy and explore the policy's monotonicity. The second model allows time-varying weather conditions and other practical aspects. Consequently, the resulting strategy are season-dependent. The model is solved using a backward dynamic programming method. The bene ts of the optimal policy are highlighted via a case study that is based upon eld data from the literature and industry. We nd that the optimal policy provides options for cost-e ective actions, because it can be adapted to a variety of operating conditions. Our discrete event-based simulation model incorporates critical components, such as a wind turbine degradation model, power generation model, wind speed model, and maintenance model. We provide practical insights gained by examining di erent maintenance strategies. To the best of our knowledge, our simulation model is the rst discrete-event simulation model for wind farm operations. Last, we present the integration framework, which incorporates the optimization results in the simulation model. Preliminary results reveal that the integrated model has the potential to provide practical guidelines that can reduce the operation costs as well as enhance the marketability of wind energy. Costs associated to unscheduled and excessively prudent maintenance can contribute significantly to an airline's expenditure. Due to the complex nature of aviation related operations, reliability practices have been limited. In an attempt to improve component reliability, i.e. reduce maintenance-related costs, a new strategy was proposed which pursuits new avenues w.r.t. reliability modelling. The strategy focusses on identifying operational factors affecting component reliability and assessing whether these can be used to reduce the number of unscheduled occurrences (i.e. failures). Currently, reliability models are limited to exponential distributions, which assume hazard rates remain constant throughout the component's operational life. Studies have shown that time-independent Proportional Hazard Models (PHMs) could improve overall reliability, however, due to poor data, this was not verified. In this solution, the benefits of both time-independent and -dependent PHMs are assessed. Furthermore, underlying hazard functions were supplemented by introducing: normal, log-normal, logistic, exponential, Weibull, and gamma distributions. To address repairables, restoration events were simulated using Kijima type II General Repair Processes (GRPs). This project would not have been possible without the cooperation of QantasLink that supplied the data required. Results obtained from analysing historical data of the top ten components w.r.t. unscheduled removals indicated that adopting new maintenance schedules, derived from the proposed reliability models, could reduce the number of unscheduled occurrences by approximately 37% while limiting the increase in Mean Time Till (next) Repair (MTTRep). The variables identified by the solution were validated using literature, however, due to variable reduction and data limitations, the exact nature of component failures is yet to be established. Undeniably the potential benefits of adopting the proposed strategy are extensive. Nonetheless, numerous assumptions were introduced to overcome challenges imposed by the complex nature of the data. To overcome these challenges, recommendations and suggestions were proposed for the future development of airline reliability practices.

▼ Sasol Infragas uses various maintenance information systems that support operational and maintenance personnel in their everyday environment. These systems have been in operation for more than two years. Currently, there are four maintenance information systems in use at Infragas, these are; alarm management, deviation management, overall efficiency management, and rotating equipment management. The information from these systems is stored on intranet portals which are accessible to all Infragas employees. This paper aimed to analyse the extent to which these portals are being utilised by Infragas employees, if at all. This paper also investigated the employees’ mind-set towards the maintenance information systems. This will assist in understanding which systems enhancements can be made to further improve employee engagement. These objectives were achieved by means of two methods. The first method was an actual usage measurement. This identified which employees were using the portals, as well as the usage frequency. This investigation method gave a real indication of the system usage and highlighted any shortfalls in employees’ interaction with the portals. The second method was a questionnaire, given to Infragas employees. The first section analysed whether the Infragas maintenance information systems are an accepted technology by investigating whether systems are being used by portal users. This was done by means of a technology acceptance model. The questionnaire also aimed to gather information on portal quality characteristics. This would indicate which quality characteristics are important to Infragas employees. Maintenance information system quality needs will differ from employee to employee. This information could improve the quality of interaction between the employees and the portals. The questionnaire also aimed to examine employees’ attitudes towards maintenance information systems. This section investigated whether employees felt that maintenance information systems improved plant performance and were beneficial to the Infragas environment. These investigations revealed valuable information for the improvement of these systems. The connection between the results of the two methods also indicated if both methods were valid. The information gathered from this study was communicated back to the Sasol Infragas management team. Recommendations for possible system improvements, which would increase employee system interaction, were also made.

▼ The primary purpose of this research effort is to investigate the relationship between Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and reducing waste in a manufacturing setting where a lean manufacturing system has been implemented. This research identifies implementation areas where RFID can have the greatest impact on work-in-progress management, inventory management, manufacturing assets tracking and maintenance, and manufacturing control in lean manufacturing environments. The study specifically focuses on how RFID can help identify, reduce, and eliminate the seven common types of waste identified by Taiichi Ohno in the Toyota Production System. These seven include overproduction, waiting time, inefficient transportation, inappropriate processing, unnecessary inventory, unnecessary motion, and rejects & defects. The study expands the knowledge of manufacturing waste reduction through the use of RFID technology. Through the use of a forty-question survey, this research involved the collection, review, analysis, and classification of the perceptions of participants across six U.S. manufacturing industries regarding where RFID can have the greatest impact on lean manufacturing. Data collection involved a structured survey administered to 1900+ members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Based on the perceptions of the respondents, RFID technology can be used in several areas/functions/locations within manufacturing that helps to identify and reduce the seven types of manufacturing waste and that RFID technology may improve work-in-progress management, inventory management, and manufacturing control. The study concluded that the reduction of manufacturing waste can be achieved through the deployment of RFID technology in 23 of 35 potential applications. This study fulfills an identified need to study the implementation areas where RFID can have the greatest impact and add value within lean manufacturing settings. The research includes implications for industry practitioners, RFID suppliers, researchers and scholars by providing a better understanding of the benefits of RFID in manufacturing. Theorists have shown that continuous improvements of the organization are a requirement in today’s global market. The nature of the required improvements can vary from business to business. This study is conducted within a business where the marked demand is higher than the average production rate of the product. Improvements in this case will be referred to in-crease the production rate by assessing the bottleneck section of the plant. In order to increase the production rate, the unplanned stoppages of the bottleneck section needs to be reduced. By reducing the unplanned stoppages of the bottleneck section the profitability of the business will increase, since the bottleneck section is regulating the output of the plant. The angle from which the availability will be increased is through maintenance. A model is developed and implementation example is presented in order to show the increase in the availability of the bottleneck section. The model will provide a systematic approach to define market demand, bottlenecks, severity of assets, criticality of failures and a maintenance decision making pro-cess regarding the profitability of maintenance investments. The result of the model is in-creased availability of the bottleneck section, leading to a higher profit. The study is conduct-ed on Cementa AB, owned by Heidelberg Cement Group.

Teoretiker har visat att ständiga förbättringar inom organisationer är ett måste i dagens globala marknad. Karaktären av de ständiga förbättringarna kan variera från organisation till organisation. Denna studie är genomförd på ett företag där efterfrågan av produkten är högre än den genomsnittliga produktionen av produkten. Förbättringar i detta fall kommer innebära att öka produktionen genom att angripa flaskhalsen i fabriken. För att kunna öka produktionen måste den oplanerade stopptiden av flaskhalsen reduceras. Genom att reducera den oplanerade stopptiden av flaskhalsen kommer vinsterna i organisationen öka, detta eftersom flaskhalsen reglerar produktionsvolymen av fabriken. Tillgängligheten skall ökas genom underhåll av flaskhalsen. En modell är utvecklad och kommer implementeras som ett exempel för att öka tillgängligheten genom underhåll. Modellen kommer ge ett systematiskt arbetssätt för att identifiera efterfrågan, flaskhalsar, allvarlighetsgraden av tillgångar (maskiner/objekt), kritikalitetet av potentiella fel och en grund för en beslutsprocess gällande lönsamheten av underhållsinvesteringar. Resultatet av modellen är ökad tillgänglighet av flaskhalsen som leder till ökad vinst. Studien är gjort på Cementa AB, ägd av Heidelberg Cement Group.

▼ The objective of transportation infrastructure management is to provide optimal maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement (MR&R) policies for a system of facilities over a planning horizon. While most approaches in the literature have studied it as a finite resource allocation problem, the presence of an underlying network configuration has been largely ignored. The recognition of the network configuration introduces several challenges, as well as opportunities, for system-level MR&R decision-making, which cannot be adequately handled by the existing decision-making frameworks.This dissertation focuses on furthering the development of Markov decision process (MDP)-based system-level MR&R decision-making frameworks. In particular, two problems of interest are identified. The first problem concerns itself with identifying an optimal system-level optimization approach for solving budget allocation problems. The second problem of interest involves moving beyond traditional budget allocation problems to incorporate network considerations into system-level decision-making.In the first part of the dissertation, a revised MDP-based optimization framework is proposed for solving the budget allocation problem. The framework, referred to as simultaneous network optimization (SNO), combines the salient features of the different MDP-based optimization approaches in infrastructure management literature, and provides optimal facility-specific MR&R policies for budget allocation problems. The proposed methodology is then compared with the other state-of-the-art MDP methodologies using a parametric study involving varying system sizes. The results of the study indicate the SNO outperforms the other MDP-based optimization frameworks.In the second part of the dissertation, it is argued that while SNO is optimal for solving budget allocation problems, it can produce sub-optimal policies upon introducing network constraints. Consequently, the use of an approximated dynamic programming (ADP) framework is motivated to solve system-level MR&R decision-making problems involving network constraints. ADP facilitates the modeling of complex problem formulations by overcoming the curse of dimensionality associated with traditional dynamic programming frameworks.To assess the suitability of ADP for system-level infrastructure management, two scenarios involving network considerations are investigated. In the first scenario, an approximate dynamic programming framework is proposed, wherein capacity losses due to construction activities are subjected to an agency-defined network capacity threshold. A parametric study is conducted on a stylized network configuration to infer the impact of network-based constraints on the decision-making process. The results indicate that ADP performs better than SNO when the network capacity constraints are binding on the decision-making process.In the second scenario, the impact of introducing economies of scale (EOS) within budget allocation problems is investigated. Slovenska vojska s helikopterji sodeluje v mednarodnih operacijah in misijah od leta 1997. Pri svojem delovanju so se logistično naslanjali v glavnem na vodilne države na območju delovanja. Vzdrževalnih del na helikopterjih na območju delovanja niso izvajali. Logistična podpora helikopterske enote je v veliki meri specifična v primerjavi z logistično podporo delovanja večine ostalih enot. Predvsem ima pomembno vlogo vzdrževanje helikopterjev, pri katerih je potrebno izvajati tako imenovane intervalne preglede, torej preglede po več opravljenih urah letenja ali po določenem času. V nalogi smo analizirali možne načine in oblike logistične podpore delovanja helikopterske enote v mednarodnih operacijah in misijah in sicer za tri predvidene scenarije: popolnoma samostojno delovanje, delovanje v okviru ene članice NATO, ki je uporabnica enakega tipa helikopterjev, vzdrževanje in oskrbo z nadomestnimi deli zagotavlja podjetje, ki je proizvedlo naš tip helikopterja. Pri tem smo se osredotočili predvsem na področje vzdrževanja. Na koncu smo podali zaključke analize.

Participation in international operations and missions with helicopters of the Slovenian Armed Forces started in 1997. Logistic support was based mainly on the lead nation in the area of operation. Helicopter maintenance works in the area of operations have not been performed. Logistic support of the helicopter unit is largely specific, compared with the logistic support of most other units. The most important is maintaining the helicopters, which should be carried out through so-called interval checks, which are carried out after several hours of flying time or after a specified time. In our Master's degree research paper, we analyzed the possible principles and modes of logistic support of the helicopter units in international operations and missions, namely for three scenarios: a completely independent operation, to operate within a NATO member state who is a user of the same type of helicopters and the maintenance and supply of spare parts by manufacturer of our helicopter type. In doing so, we focused mainly on the area of maintenance. Finally we give conclusions of the analysis.
