▼ The use of technology in mathematics education has many potentially positive outcomes. There is, however, little evidence to show where the use of technology has made a significant impact on mathematics education in South Africa. This study aims to address the issue of how computer tablets are currently used in the mathematics classroom. The researcher drew a comparison between learners who were taught with computer tablets and learners who were taught in the traditional way by evaluating the learners' progress after being taught on the topic of 3D images. This assessment was done in the form of a pre-test and a post-test that were administered to both classes on a topic of 3D images that was taught during this allocated time. The research is located in the third-generation activity theory. It is based on the socio-cultural theory of Lev Vygotsky, but it is blended with modern western theories as described by Engeström. The researcher made use of a mixed methods approach starting with a qualitative survey, followed by a pre-test, observations and concluding with a post-test. The pre-test and post-test determined whether cognitive knowledge was gained. The participants in the study were a group of 15-year-old learners at a private school where the one class was taught using computer tablets in the mathematics classroom, and the other class was taught the same content without computer tablets. A qualitative survey was sent to 27 schools within a particular school group where teachers indicated the popular Apps that were used in the mathematics classroom in this school group. Teachers also gave reasons why these were the Apps of choice and elaborated on how they were using these Apps. The quantitative part of this research was guided by the results of the survey and the 5 most popular Applications (Apps) were used in the teaching experiment. The quantitative part focused on two classrooms within the same school where the one class were taught with computer tablets and the other class were taught without the use of computer tablets. The t-test for this research showed that the group of learners who were taught with computer tablets achieved significantly better results than the class of learners who were taught using hard copy textbooks with traditional methods of teaching. This study showed that having computer tablets in schools can be effective in the mathematics classroom. The recommendations emanating from this study indicates that school who are planning to use computer tablets in the mathematics classroom should first plan their wi-fi capabilities with enough access points and internet access. These schools also need to decide on a type of computer tablet and what operating system to use. This decision has implications to the accessibility of quality Apps, battery life and storage space of the computer tablet. Schools are recommended to have a plan for training teachers in the use of this computer tablets especially regarding the pedagogical practice when interacting with learners. ▼ Online assessments afford many advantages for teachers and students. Okolo (2006) stated, “As the power, sophistication, and availability of technology have increased in the classroom, online assessments have become a viable tool for providing the type of frequent and dynamic assessment information that educators need to guide instructional decisions,” (pp 67-68). As post secondary institutes use online learning environments, education has molded into hybrid experiences. Traditional courses now regularly infuse components of online learning and assessments by required student participation both in person and online. Research is needed to analyze online components of assessment and student achievement. Data was gathered from an undergraduate mathematics course designed for students seeking a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. The course was entitled MATH 320: Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers. Synergies of quantitative and qualitative data were evaluated to assess the impact of written and video help tutorials in online quizzes on student achievement. Three forms of data were collected: student interviews, surveys about students’ online quiz experiences and learning style preferences, and student performance and tutorial usage statistics from seven online quizzes. Student interviews were conducted mid-semester by the researcher who also transcribed and analyzed data. Graphical schemes were used to identify and categorize responses to interview questions. Students’ responses were summarized and quantified in frequency tables. Surveys about students’ online quiz experiences and learning style preferences were analyzed through descriptive statistical methods to describe the data with numerical indices and in graphical form. Correlation matrices and linear regression models were used to identify relationships among survey items. Additionally, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) techniques were used to explore the data for statistical significance. Students were assigned seven online quizzes throughout the semester. Descriptive statistics were calculated to describe the online quiz data. Regression models were used to determine correlations between use of help tutorials and performance on online quizzes. Data analysis revealed students were persistent and motivated to retake similar quizzes multiple times until a high or perfect score was obtained. After missing a problem, students selected written help tutorials more often than video help tutorials to identify mistakes and understand how to solve the particular problem. The proportion of students whose scores improved after using both written and video help tutorials was greater than those who used the written help tutorials alone. Although the number of students who benefited from the video help tutorials was smaller than expected, the increased performance could be appreciated by students and educators alike. ▼ There have been calls both from the government and private sector for Higher Education institutions to introduce programmes that produce employable graduates whilst at the same time contributing to the growing economy of the country by addressing the skills shortage. Transformation and intervention committees have since been introduced to follow the extent to which the challenges are being addressed (DOE, 1996; 1997; Luescher and Symes, 2003; Forbes, 2007). Amongst the list of issues that needed urgent address were the skills shortage and underperformance of students particularly university entering students (Daniels, 2007; De Klerk, 2006; Cooper, 2001). Research particularly in the South African context, has revealed that contributing to the underperformance of university entering students and shortage of skills are: the legacy of apartheid (forcing certain racial groups to focus on selected areas such as teaching and nursing), the schooling system (resulting in university entering students to struggle), the home language and academic language. Barrell (1998), places stress on language as a contributing factor towards the performance of students. Although not much research has been done on skills shortage, most of the areas with skills shortage require Mathematics, either on a minimum or comprehensive scale. Students who have a strong Mathematics background have proved to perform better compared to students who have a limited or no Mathematics background at all in Grade 12 (Hahn, 1988; Conners, McCown & Roskos-Ewoldsen, 1998; Nolan, 2002).The department of Statistics offers an Introductory Statistics (IS) course at first year level. Resources available to enhance student learning include: a problem-solving component with web-based tutorials and students attending lectures three hours per week. The course material and all the necessary information regarding the course including teach yourself problems, useful web-sites and links students can make use of, are all stored under the Knowledge- Environment for Web-based learning (KEWL). Despite all the available information, the students were not performing well and they were not interested in the course. The department regards statistical numeracy as a life skill. The desire of the department is to break down the fear of Statistics and to bring about a perspective change in students' mindsets. The study was part of a contribution to ensuring that the department has the best first year students in Statistics in the Western Cape achieving a success rate comparable to the national norm.
