▼ Bangkok is a city where the congestion levels have been a major problem for many years. In 2017, Bangkok was rated the most congested city in Asia, and the second most congested in the world. According to The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), on-ramp merging is one of the most critical problem that causes congestion on the urban expressways. EXAT have evaluated several merging control strategies through microscopic traffic simulation to find suitable strategies for implementation in real life. However, their simulation studies were all based on the assumption that all motorists strictly follow the traffic rules. This is not the actual case in Bangkok, where the drivers ignore both solid lines and striped areas, as well as utilize the shoulder lane on a regular basis. The aim of this thesis is to investigate if it is possible to include this complex driving behavior in existing microscopic simulation models. A second objective is to identify merging control strategies that can reduce the occurrence and the effects of this driving behavior in order to increase the throughput at an on-ramp area on Sirat Expressway. A model was built in VISSIM and calibrated based on data collected from video recordings. In the study, parameters that are significant for the driving behavior modeling, as well as the difficulties that arise from performing a realistic calibration of the model using video observations and model-specific constraints, are identified. From the video recordings it was discovered that the main problem causing the congestion was a result of the mainline traffic who traversed to the on-ramp. Two merging control strategies were suggested to address this problem: the installment of a center barrier, and successive merging areas. The results confirmed that both actions can improve the traffic situation in terms of reducing the individual travel time. Installing a center barrier was the most efficient option and reduced the travel time by 16.58 % on the mainline and 63.24 % at the on-ramp.

▼ ABSTRACT Red Light Running (RLR) at signalized intersections continues to be a safety concern for many communities in the United States. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reported a total of 683 fatalities and 133,000 injuries in 2012 due to crashes involving RLR. There are many strategies to mitigate RLR violations that can be classified as engineering, enforcement, or education techniques. Previous studies have reported positive impacts of these strategies in reducing RLR. Intersection confirmation lights with targeted enforcement are a low-cost measure to reduce RLR in communities where automated enforcement is not practical or feasible. Some studies have shown the effectiveness of confirmation lights in reducing RLR at four-leg signalized intersections. This research study focuses on evaluating confirmation lights to enhance enforcement at on-ramp signalized intersections. Operations of on-ramp intersections are different than four-leg intersections, as the drivers may be more likely to run the red light and join the freeway. Police officers find these intersections difficult to enforce from the ramp as they cannot see the traffic signals. Adding confirmation lights can change that. Confirmation lights were deployed at two on-ramp intersections in Overland Park, Kansas. Traffic were observed at the treatment sites, and at five other control intersections. Traffic data were recorded before deployment, one month after, and three months after installation of the confirmation lights. A total of seven intersections were recorded for 24 hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for a total of 1512 hours of traffic video. A z-test of proportions was used to determine if the changes in RLR violation rates from the before period to the after periods were statistically significant at the 0.05 level of significance. Violation time into red (how long it took a driver to run a red light after the red signal indication) was used as a secondary performance measure to evaluate the confirmation lights. A chi-square test of independence was used to analyze the violation times into red at the 0.05 level of significance. Analysis showed a 60.4 percent reduction in the RLR violation rate at the treatment sites and a 31.8 percent reduction at the control sites one month after installation of the confirmation lights. The three months after study indicated a 56.9 percent decrease in violation rates at the treatment sites and 60.16 percent reduction at the control sites. At the 0.05 level of significance, the one month and three month reductions at the treatment sites were statistically significant whereas only the three months reduction were statistically significant at the control sites. A chi- square test was conducted for time into red which was statistically significant for the one month and three month violations for both the treatment and the control sites. ▼ Motorway congestion can be classified into two types, recurrent congestion and non-recurrent congestion. Recurrent congestion happens during peak hours. Non-recurrent congestion occurs due to car accidents, weather conditions or public events. Negative impacts of traffic congestion include wasted fuel, pollution, travel delay and spillover effects caused by slow traffic. Ramp metering, as an only way to regulate traffic amount accessing to the motorway, is considered as the most cost-effective way to prevent the recurrent congestion. Coordinated ramp metering was developed to control a number of on-ramps simultaneously to improve traffic conditions on busy motorways. The existing coordinated ramp metering algorithms were normally established on macroscopic traffic flow models based on Payne’s wok, the performances of which were measured by the employed macroscopic model themselves, and the released metering rates of which tended to be continuous. Implementations in microscopic traffic simulators were few. This thesis presents DP (Dynamic Programming) based online control approaches for the optimal coordination of ramp metering and evaluates its performances in both macroscopic and microscopic traffic simulation environment. DP decision networks were proposed, where a traffic system can be modeled as a number of discrete traffic states and separated by time stages, and the control problem of coordinated ramp metering was treated as the minimization problem to search the optimal trajectory of discrete decision variables (ramp metering rates) that minimized a cost criterion in terms of TTS (total time spent) along the time horizon. Experiments conducted in the macroscopic simulation environment demonstrated the full potential of proposed algorithms with precise queue constrains in an ideal deterministic environment, and experiments conducted in the microscopic simulation environment indicated the performances of the proposed algorithms in a stochastic environment and revealed the feasibility in the real world. The implementation of DP ramp metering was proposed under the framework of receding horizon control. A 6.7km stretch of motorway in Auckland, New Zealand, was chosen as a study location and constructed by a microscopic simulator as a simulation scenario and by a macroscopic traffic model as a prediction model. The simulation results indicated that the proposed algorithms were able to eliminate motorway queues under high traffic demands and manage queue lengths at metered on-ramps when queue constrains were not overstrict. The simulation results also revealed that 9 discrete metering rates for each ramp meter were adequate to prevent motorway queues. Such feature not only proved that the optimal trajectory converged very fast in the proposed DP decision networks, but also made on-line control system possible due to less computational load.

▼ Past research acknowledged the impact of ramp vehicles on the occurrence of a breakdown event, but little has been done to quantify the effect of the ramp vehicles on the resulting bottleneck capacity. The objective of this research is to explore the relationship between ramp flow and capacity and to recommend capacity values for merge bottleneck locations. To explore the relationship between ramp flow and capacity, a capacity model has been developed using linear regression. The entire freeway network in Kansas City area was considered for the analysis. All locations which experienced “true breakdown”, breakdown because of merging operations and not due to downstream spillback, were selected for the analysis. Detector data at the six selected locations, were downloaded from KC Scout Portal from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2016. Per lane and average speed, volume and occupancy data at 5-minute intervals were chosen for the analysis so as to detect breakdowns and find independent breakdown locations. Incident data and bad weather data were also collected for the same period and all the days with incidents and bad weather were removed from the analysis. For this research, free flow speed was defined as the average of flows when speeds were more than 50 miles per hour and the flows were less than 800 vehicles/hour. Breakdown was said to occur when speeds drop more than 25% of the free flow speed and the reduced speeds are maintained for at least 15 minutes, i.e., three 5-minute intervals (TRB, 2016). The breakdown capacities ranged from 3,900 to 8,500 vehicles per hour (veh/h) and when averaged across all the lanes, 1,150 to 2,200 vehicles per hour per lane (veh/h/ln). The upstream breakdown flows (demand) ranged from 3,400 to 8,400 veh/h and when averaged across all the lanes, 1,050-2,100 veh/h/ln. The ramp breakdown flows (ramp demand) ranged from 150 to 2,700 veh/h and when averaged across all the lanes, 150 to 1,500 veh/h/ln. Various variables such as freeway demand, ramp demand, free flow speed, number of lanes, ramp to freeway demand ratio, outer two-lane flow, shoulder lane flow, and remaining lane flow were considered for developing the model. Interactions between the variables were also considered. The final model was developed using 70% of the data, which were randomly selected, and the remaining 30% of the data was set aside for validation. A final model with an R2 value of 0.689 was developed. The high R2 value indicates that the developed model is a good predictor of capacity and this was also proven through the validation test for the developed model. The regression model was used to predict capacity values for different ramp demand and freeway demand. By observing the calculated capacity values it was concluded that the capacity was decreasing as the ramp demand, outer two lanes flows were increasing and the capacity per lane was decreasing as the number of lanes was decreasing, which is consistent with past literature (Lu & Elefeteriadou, 2013; Kondyli et al. 2016). Dataloggern DL141E möjliggör kontinuerlig loggnig av mätdata från sensorer på upp till 30k sampel/s, som vidare kan överföras till mobiltelefoner via trådlös kommunikation. Detta är dock för stora datamängder per tidsenhet för mobiltelefoner som är tekniskt begränsade. Därför önskas bara relevant mätdata för att reducerar denna onödiga datamängd. I denna studie föreslås ett tillvägagångssätt där enspecifik mindre samling av diskreta försampel loggas i tur och ordning. Varje samling signalbehandlas genom att ställas mot fördefinierade triggningskriterier för att trigga loggning av en stor uppsättning av sampel på bara intressanta signalavvikelser. Dessa triggningskriterier är en särskild nivåöverskridning och signalriktning i kombination med ett antal sampel i följd. Studien förser en granskning av hur signalberäkningsmetoden ”Lebesgue sampling” kan tillämpas med kriterierna för god träffsäkerhet och en skälig beräkningstid i mobiltelefoner. Detta beaktas med dataloggerns vanligaste signaltyper puls och ramp i en miljö där småbrus och transienter förekommer. Träffsäkerheten och beräkningsbördan beaktasför att bedöma Lebesgue metodens effektivitet och antal nödvändiga försampel per uppsättning. Implementeringen görs i Java Android plattform och integreras därefter i en digital triggningsmodul med Graphical User Interface (GUI).

With the data logger DL141E it’s possible to continuously log measurement data from sensors up to 30k samples per second, and then transferring them to a mobile phone with Bluetooth technology. But this is by far too much sample data in a small time for a mobile phone with technical limitations to receive. That’s why only relevant measurement data should be mass logged to reduce the unnecessary data amount. Int his study a new approach is proposed where a specific and smaller amount of discrete pre-samples are logged in sequence. Every set of pre-samples is processed by comparing them to the user pre-defined trigger criterias. Met criterias will trigger logging of a massive set of samples on basis of only interesting signal deviations. The following trigger criterias are used: a specific signal level to cross, a specific signal direction, and both of these in combination with an amount of consecutive samples. The study provides an examination on how the signal processing method ”Lebesgue sampling” can be applied with the above criterias to achieve a god accuracy with reasonable processing time on mobile phones. This is observed using sensors with the most common signal types ramp and pulse in an environment where small noises and transients occur. The accuracy and the processing load are taken into account when estimating the efficiency of Lebesgue method and when estimating how many pre-samples per set might be sufficient. The implementation is written in Java Android platform and then integrated into a digital triggering module with Graphical User Interface (GUI).

▼ Although the physical characteristics of surfing breaks are well described in the literature, there is little specific research on surfing and coastal management. Such research is required because coastal engineering has had significant impacts to surfing breaks, both positive and negative. Strategic planning and environmental impact assessment methods, a central tenet of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), are recommended by this thesis to maximise surfing amenities. The research reported here identifies key oceanographic considerations required for ICZM around surfing breaks including: surfing wave parameters; surfing break components; relationship between surfer skill, surfing manoeuvre type and wave parameters; wind effects on waves; currents; geomorphic surfing break categorisation; beach-state and morphology; and offshore wave transformations. Key coastal activities that can have impacts to surfing breaks are identified. Environmental data types to consider during coastal studies around surfing breaks are presented and geographic information systems (GIS) are used to manage and interpret such information. To monitor surfing breaks, a shallow water multibeam echo sounding system was utilised and a RTK GPS water level correction and hydrographic GIS methodology developed. Including surfing in coastal management requires coastal engineering solutions that incorporate surfing. As an example, the efficacy of the artificial surfing reef (ASR) at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, was evaluated. GIS, multibeam echo soundings, oceanographic measurements, photography, and wave modelling were all applied to monitor sea floor morphology around the reef. Results showed that the beach-state has more cellular circulation since the reef was installed, and a groin effect on the offshore bar was caused by the structure within the monitoring period, trapping sediment updrift and eroding sediment downdrift. No identifiable shoreline salient was observed. Landward of the reef, a scour hole ~3 times the surface area of the reef has formed. The current literature on ASRs has primarily focused on reef shape and its role in creating surfing waves. However, this study suggests that impacts to the offshore bar, beach-state, scour hole and surf zone hydrodynamics should all be included in future surfing reef designs. More real world reef studies, including ongoing monitoring of existing surfing reefs are required to validate theoretical concepts in the published literature.
