▼ The Arveson-Douglas Conjecture states that, closures of polynomial ideals in some analytic Hilbert modules, such as the Drury-Arveson module, Bergman module or Hardy module, are essentially normal. The conjecture has connections to multivariable operator theory, index theory and function theory. In this dissertation, we discuss an approach using tools from harmonic analysis and several complex variables. Two methods are introduced, approaching this problem from different aspects. Each method has given some interesting new results. Most of the theories developed in this dissertation concerns the Bergman space.
First, we introduce the Arveson-Douglas Conjecture, its background and applications.
Then we describe the first method. The main
subject is a geometric version of the Arveson-Douglas Conjecture. For this method to work we need the variety to have nice properties, such as smoothness or transversality, around the boundary. Two types of varieties are considered.
Next, we develop the second method, which mainly treats principal submodules. This method gives weaker results but is more flexible. As a consequence, we are able to extend our discussion to strongly pseudoconvex domains and to the Hardy space. As an application, we apply this theory to the unit ball and obtain some nontrivial results.
Finally, we end this dissertation with some concluding remarks as well as future plans.

▼ The aim of this study was to, on the basis of normalization and autonomy; investigate how staff working in group homes discusses about sexuality of people with an intellectual disability. Our study was based on ten semi-structured interviews of both care staff and heads of group homes to get responses from different levels within the same organization. The empirical material was analyzed through the theory of social constructivism, which focuses on how we construct the world through interaction and language, and the normalization principle whose goal is that all people with developmental disabilities should have the opportunity to live like all other people. We view these theories as useful to gain understanding of the questions in our study. The result of this study showed that the subject only comes up for discussion when problems arise, that the communication on the subject is inadequate and more discussion is requested. Further the result illustrated that staff strives for people with developmental disabilities to feel they have autonomy but this is also a challenge in their work.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Independence and dependence between studies in meta-analysis are assumptions which are imposed on the structure of hierarchical Bayesian meta-analytic models. Whilst independence assumes that two or more studies have no correlation in meta-analysis, dependence can occur as a result of study reports using the same data or authors (Stevens & Taylor, 2009). In this thesis, the relaxation of the assumption of independence, and/or of a normal distribution for the true study effects is investigated. A variety of statistical meta-analytic models were developed and extended in this thesis. These include the DuMouchel (DuMouchel, 1990) model and hierarchical Bayesian meta-regression (HBMR) (Jones et al., 2009) model, which assume independence within and between studies or between subgroups. Also investigated were the hierarchical Bayesian linear model (HBLM) (Stevens, 2005) and hierarchical Bayesian delta-splitting (HBDS) (Stevens & Taylor, 2009) model, which allow for dependence between studies and sub-studies, introducing dependency at the sampling and hierarchical levels. Overall the General Bayesian Linear Model (GBLM) theorems, the Gibbs sampler, the Metropolis-Hasting and the Metropolis within Gibbs algorithms were shown to be produce good estimates for specific models. The analytical forms of the joint posterior distributions of all parameters for the DuMouchel and the HBMR models were derived using the general Bayesian linear model (GBLM) theorems; with models presented in the form of matrices to which the theorems could be directly applied. The GBLM theorems were shown to be useful alternative meta-analytic approaches. The Gibbs sampler algorithm was demonstrated to be an appropriate approach for approximating the parameters of the DuMouchel model, for which sensitivity analyses were conducted by imposing different prior distributions at the study level. In contrast in the HBMR model, different prior specifications at the subgroup level were imposed. An extended GBLM theorem was used to approximate the joint posterior distribution of parameters in the HBMR, given the analytical derivation of the posterior distribution for the HBMR model can be computationally intractable due to the integration of multiple functions. The DuMouchel model and the HBMR model developed were demonstrated on a data set related to the incidence of Ewing’s sarcoma (Honoki et al., 2007) and on a study relating to exposure to certain chemicals and reproductive health (Jones et al., 2009), respectively. Consistency of results suggested that the GBLM Theorem and the Gibbs sampler algorithm were good alternative approaches to parameter estimation for the DuMouchel and HBMR models. Parameter estimates were generally not sensitive to the imposition of different prior distributions on the mean and variance for the DuMouchel model, and were close to the true values when different values were specified for the hyper-parameters for the HBMR model, indicating robust models. The HBLM and HBDS models were…

▼ The purposes of the thesis were to review some of the existing methods for testing
normality and to investigate the use of generated data combined with observed to test for
normality. The approach to testing for
normality is in contrast to the existing methods which are derived from observed data only. The test of
normality proposed follows a characterization theorem by Bernstein (1941) and uses a test statistic D*, which is the average of the Hoeffding’s D-Statistic between linear combinations of the observed and generated data to test for
normality.
Overall, the proposed method showed considerable potential and achieved adequate power for many of the alternative distributions investigated. The simulation results revealed that the power of the test was comparable to some of the most commonly used methods of testing for
normality. The test is performed with the use of a computer-based statistical package and in general takes a longer time to run than some of the existing methods of testing for
normality.

▼ The Partially Nested Randomized Control Trial (PNRCT) model can be used when the subjects within the treatment group are clustered in groups and the subjects in the control group remained unclustered. The few existing studies have focused on validating, by using Monte Carlo techniques, the efficiency of the PNRCT model compared with other competing models. These studies have been conducted under the assumption that all model assumptions are achieved. One of these assumptions is the normality of error distribution. The literature suggests that real world data hardly ever present a normal distribution. When using data from applied settings, the error distribution from regression models can produce any distributional form. When this happens, the model assumption of normality may be violated, affecting the quality of parameter estimates. This is relevant for the validity of any regression model, because if the error distribution substantially deviates from normality, the model parameter estimates and their standard errors may be seriously affected. Despite the relevance of normality error distribution, very little attention has been given to it in partially nested models. This study assessed the effect of violating the assumption of normality at level 2 in the PNRCT model on the sensitivity of parameter estimates (fixed effects), Type I error rate, and power in the “pure” PNRCT model and in a PNRCT model adjusted by one covariate at level 1. To achieve this goal several conditions such as different number of clusters, different cluster size, and different intra-class correlation (ICC) levels were examined. The results showed robust estimation of the PNRCT model. The fixed effects were unbiased and were more accurately estimated when the number of clusters and subjects increased. The same pattern was found as the ICC increased. The PNRCT model diminishes power up to certain point. This condition is exacerbated in the presence of non-normal distributions. However, as in other studies, power was positively impacted as the number of clusters and number of subjects increased. Finally, the Type I error rate did not substantially deviate from the nominal Type I error rate even for non-normal distributions.

▼ Material failure plays an important role in human life. By investigating the failure mechanisms, people can more precisely predict the failure conditions to develop new products, to enhance product performances, and most importantly, to save lives. This work consists of three parts corresponding to three different failure mechanisms in metals, i.e., the localized necking in sheet metals, the bifurcation in bulk and sheet metals, and the ductile fracture induced by the void nucleation, growth, and coalescence.
The objective of the first part is to model the localized necking in anisotropic sheet metals to demonstrate that localized geometric softening at a certain stage of deformation rather than the initial defects is the main cause of localized necking. The sheet is assumed to have no initial geometric defects. The deformation process is divided into two stages. The critical strains for a neck to form are obtained from a Considère-type criterion. The defect ratio at the neck formation is obtained using an energy-based approach. The neck evolution is considered. A novel failure criterion is proposed. Two types of necks are fond to be most competitive to cause material failure during continued deformation. The forming limit curves are hereby found to exhibit different characteristics in different region. The predicted forming limit curve for 2036-T4 aluminum is found to fit with the experimental results well. The sheet thickness, the strain hardening behavior, and plastic anisotropy are found to affect the sheet metal formability. More realistic yield criterions and strain hardening behaviors can be implemented into the proposed model. This part provides an alternative approach to modeling the localized necking in anisotropic sheet metals.
The objective of the second part is to model the bifurcation in anisotropic bulk and sheet metals to couple plastic anisotropy and the strain hardening/softening behavior and also to identify different bifurcation modes in sheet metals. The material is assumed to exhibit a non-linear strain hardening/softening behavior and to obey the Hill-type Drucker-Prager yield criterion along with a non associated flow rule. The constitutive relations and the conditions for bifurcation in bulk and sheet metals are derived. The internal friction coefficient, plastic anisotropy, the terms introduced by the co-rotational stress rates, and the terms introduced by the stress resultant equilibrium are found to affect the onset of bifurcation. Two bifurcation modes are found to exist in sheet metals. More realistic material properties can be implemented into the proposed model. This part provides an applicable approach to modeling the bifurcation in anisotropic bulk and sheet metals.
The objective of the third part is to derive the constitutive relations for porous metals using generalized Green’s functions to better understand the micromechanism of the ductile fracture in metals. The porous metals are assumed to consist of an isotropic, rigid-perfectly plastic matrix and numerous periodically…

This work seeks to present, through the analysis of Canguilhems complete work, a critique of the practical reasoning in medicine, as suggested by the author himself. Although he has not intended to renovate medicine, his intention was to help thinking about its assumptions and fundamental concepts. It is believed that, by criticizing the hegemony of the modern scientific-medical model and operating the unveiling of its ideology of control over life, he ended up outlining the contours of a new medical rationale. This approach is based on the definition of medicine as a type of art which is at the service of a vital resistance capacity. This way, it can cope with the mechanization of life, the normalization of individuals and sociopolitical medical management of everyday life. Thus, by adopting Canguilhems perspective, the idea of normality as normalization is more related to the modern scientific medicine that works with the idea of statistical average and the ideal type than the medicine which considers that, in nature, there is only normality as normativity. At the end of this work, the aim is to glimpse another horizon for the practices and the ethics of current health care.

▼ The primary objective of this
thesis is the construction of a powerful state change detection
procedure for monitoring time series, which can help decision
makers to react faster to changes in the system and define the
proper course of action for each case. Without losing sight of our
primary goal, we first derived a robust test of approximate
normality based on the Shapiro-Wilk test (RSW), which detects if
the majority of the data follows a normal distribution. The RSW
test is based on the idea of trimming the original sample, and
replacing the observations in the tail by artificially generated
normally distributed data, and then performing the Shapiro-Wilk
test on the modified sequence. We show that under the null
hypothesis of
normality the modified sequence is asymptotically
normally distributed and that the RSW test statistic has the same
asymptotic null distribution as the Shapiro-Wilk test statistic.
The RSW test proves to be resistant to outliers and outperforms the
other considered robust test for
normality in the presence of
outliers. Intending to use the RSW test to create a robust
estimator of the Box-Cox transformation, we also investigate its
behaviour with respect to the inverse Box-Cox transformation. It
proves to be resistant to outliers in this case and also
outperforms its competitors in presence of a few outliers.
Secondly, we used the RSW test to derive a robust estimator of the
Box-Cox transformation parameter (ˆλRSW). This conforms to the fact
that the Box-Cox transformation only achieves approximate
normality
and the Shapiro-Wilk test of
normality is one of the most powerful
tests of
normality. Gaudard & Karson (2000) already derived a
non robust estimator of the Box-Cox transformation parameter based
on the Shapiro-Wilk test statistic that outperformed the other
estimators considered in their comparison. As expected, ˆλRSW is
preferable to the maximum-likelihood and the M-estimators (we
considered), mainly because it yields a better transformation in
the sense that not only are the transformed samples more
symmetrical according to the medcouple (a robust measure of
symmetry and tail weight), but they also have a higher pass rate
for the RSW test and the MC1 test at a significance level of 5%.
Finally, returning to the state change detection, we opt for the
method of Harrison & Stevens (1971), which considers four
states: the steady state (normal state), the step change (level
shift), the slope change and the outlier. The assumption of
normally distributed data restricts the usage of the procedure, so
we transform the data with ˆλRSW to achieve approximate
normality.
We extend the update equations to two observations in the past,
that is to compute the probability of occurrence of a state change
at time t - 2 given all available data until time t. This extension
is used when we derive classifications rules for the incoming
observations, given that the procedure only computes a posteriori
probabilities for the different states and does not classify them.
We use linear discriminant analysis and…

▼ In this dissertation we consider the classical notions of stochasticity and randomness as they pertain to several areas of mathematics. We look at three main topics: martingales, selection rules, and graphs.
First, we discuss the notion of martingales and focus our attention onto restricted value martingales; this allows us to make some insights into the notion of A-valued randomness for a set A of real numbers. Martingales are the classical mathematical representation of a betting strategy; they are defined in a way that nicely accommodates the notion of ``win your bet if you are successful and lose your bet if you are unsuccessful.'' By looking at restricted value martingales, we are able to focus on betting strategies that only allow wagers of certain amounts. Bavly and Peretz defined notions of anticipation and evasion to relate the relative strengths of restricted value martingales; this provides a natural way to compare A-valued randomness and B-valued randomness for different sets A, B \subseteq \R
+. Essentially, A evades B when there is an A-martingale that can succeed against any countable set of B-martingales, and otherwise B anticipates A – to get the similar notion of single evasion one only needs to consider a single B-martingale. Bavly and Peretz characterized the evasion/anticipation relationships when A is bounded and B is bounded away from 0, as well as when B is well-ordered, however the question of what happens when B has 0 as an accumulation point remained open. We look at various geometric sequences for our set B to help answer this question with regard to single evasion/single anticipation.
Second, we consider selection rules and how they relate to
normality and randomness. Traditionally, a selection rule indicates how to select a subsequence from a given binary sequence based on the initial segment of the sequence that has already been viewed. Clearly one must ask what sort of properties are preserved under the application of a selection rule, however there are two equally important ways to formulate this question: for a fixed set of sequences what selection rules always output an element of that set when applied to an element of that set, and for a fixed set of selection rules what properties of sequences are preserved? Von Mises made the intuitions of these questions rigorous with the notions of kollektivs and admissible selection rules. We focus on sequences and selection rules defined in terms of computability,
normality, Martin-Löf randomness, and the strong law of large numbers.
Lastly, we apply selection rules to graphs and graph sequences as well as discuss several notions of randomness for graphs. Graphs as mathematical objects are intuitively more structurally complicated than binary sequences, however both graphs and sequences are useful to consider in the context of information content. As a result, it makes sense to look at any probabilistic notion that applies to binary sequences – stochasticity,
normality, randomness – …

▼ Methods for constructing confidence intervals for the variance components from a random effects model have important applications in a variety of disciplines. A fundamental analysis with random effects models is confidence intervals for the variance components or functions of the variance components. Many methods for constructing confidence intervals are currently being used. These methods work well under normality, equal variance, and equal sample size, but are very sensitive to any violations of these assumptions. This dissertation addresses the problem of constructing confidence intervals for variance components when the random effects or the errors are not normally distributed. The focus is on balanced one way random effects models and four parameters - the between group variance, the ratio of between to within group variance components, the intra-class correlation, and the ``stepped-up" reliability - are examined. All of our proposed methods replace the usual estimate of the standard error calculated under the assumption of normality with an estimate calculated under non-normality. For the between group variance, this estimate includes an estimate of the kurtosis of the distribution of the random effect. For the other three parameters, the standard error estimate includes estimates of both the kurtosis of the distribution of the random effect and the kurtosis of the distribution of the errors. If the researcher does not have any information about the distribution of the random effects or the errors, a general kurtosis estimate is used which is based on Pearson's kurtosis estimator, but with adjustments suggested by Bonett and Shoemaker. If it seems reasonable to assume the random effect or the errors follow a Beta or Gamma distribution, the kurtosis is estimated by first estimating the parameters of these distributions and then using the parameter estimates to estimate the kurtosis. If a previous study has been conducted, kurtosis estimates from the previous study can be pooled with the kurtosis estimates from the current study. Finally, if the researcher can theoretically specify a kurtosis value based on expert knowledge about their field of study, this specified kurtosis value can be used in place of an estimate. Our findings indicate that the proposed methods, especially those that incorporate a researcher's knowledge about the distributions of the random effect and the errors, perform better than the current methods when the normality assumption is violated.

▼ The primary objective of this thesis is the construction of a powerful state change detection procedure for monitoring time series, which can help decision makers to react faster to changes in the system and define the proper course of action for each case. Without losing sight of our primary goal, we first derived a robust test of approximate
normality based on the Shapiro-Wilk test (RSW), which detects if the majority of the data follows a normal distribution. The RSW test is based on the idea of trimming the original sample, and replacing the observations in the tail by artificially generated normally distributed data, and then performing the Shapiro-Wilk test on the modified sequence. We show that under the null hypothesis of
normality the modified sequence is asymptotically normally distributed and that the RSW test statistic has the same asymptotic null distribution as the Shapiro-Wilk test statistic. The RSW test proves to be resistant to
outliers and outperforms the other considered robust test for
normality in the presence of outliers. Intending to use the RSW test to create a robust estimator of the Box-Cox transformation, we also investigate its behaviour with respect to the inverse Box-Cox transformation. It proves to be resistant to outliers in this case and also outperforms its competitors in presence of a few outliers. Secondly, we used the RSW test to derive a robust estimator of the Box-Cox transformation parameter (ˆλRSW). This conforms to the fact that the Box-Cox transformation only achieves approximate
normality and the Shapiro-Wilk test of
normality is one of the most powerful tests of
normality. Gaudard & Karson (2000) already derived a non robust estimator of the Box-Cox transformation parameter based on the Shapiro-Wilk test statistic that outperformed the other estimators considered in their comparison.
In this thesis we apply the Malliavin calculus in order to obtain the local asymptotic normality (LAN) property from discrete observations for certain uniformly elliptic diffusion processes with jumps. In Chapter 2 we review the proof of the local asymptotic mixed normality (LAMN) property for diffusion processes with jumps from continuous observations, and as a consequence, we derive the LAN property when supposing the ergodicity of the process. In Chapter 3 we establish the LAN property for a simple Lévy process whose drift and diffusion parameters as well as its intensity are unknown. In Chapter 4, using techniques of the Malliavin calculus and the estimates of the transition density, we prove that the LAN property is satisfied for a jump-diffusion process whose drift coefficient depends on an unknown parameter. Finally, in the same direction we obtain in Chapter 5 the LAN property for a jump-diffusion process where two unknown parameters determine the drift and diffusion coefficients of the jump-diffusion process.

▼ Background: Concerns have been well documented about women either dying or developing severe morbidities from prolonged and obstructed labour. These concerns have noted that maternity care during labour has not been of a sufficient standard to improve the outcome for women giving birth in Malawi. This ‘failure to save’ women remains, despite assertions that obstructed and prolonged labour can be prevented through appropriate decision making during the progress and management of labour. Midwives in Malawi form the majority of maternity healthcare workers and an important aspect of their decision-making role is to assess the progress of labour when caring for women in labour. To date, there has been limited exploration of either midwifery decision making during labour or the contextual factors that influence midwives’ decision making. The aim of this study was to explore how Malawian midwives make decisions during the first stage of labour in a hospital setting and to identify the contextual factors that influence their decision making. Design and Method: Using a qualitative ethnographic research approach, 27 participant observations, 26 follow-up interviews and document reviews comprised the data collection. Nine Malawian nurse-midwives who worked at a tertiary (n=5) and a secondary referral hospital (n=4), with a mixture of qualifications and experiences, participated. Each nurse midwife was observed three times with subsequent follow-up interviews. Interviews were conducted in a vernacular language, audio-taped, transcribed, translated into English and back translated into vernacular language. Qualitative data analysis software, NVivo 10, was used to assist with data management for the analysis. All data was analysed using the principle of theme and category formation. Findings: Three major themes were identified - contextual factors influencing midwifery decision making - the role of cue acquisition - the role of the partograph during care of women in the first stage of labour. Integration of the themes has led to the development of a proposed conceptual model of ‘supporting normality’ during the first stage of labour, which suggests that the midwives strived to make decisions during the care of women in labour with the aim of supporting the normal physiological processes of labour. The first theme illustrates that for Malawian midwives, decision making is a complex and contextually dependent undertaking. In everyday practice, decision making was influenced by multiple and competing factors but the midwives developed strategies to manage and control the context of their practice and facilitate decision making. The role of cue acquisition comprised a six-stage subprocess illustrating the ways in which midwives utilise assessment data to reason and make decisions during the care of women in labour. These processes involved the midwives building a case for each woman’s labour progression by piecing together segments of information they obtained. This process was striking when there was uncertainty in a woman’s…

▼ Background: Studies have shown that 66 children and teenagers in Sweden suffers from brain tumor every year. Children and teenagers who can´t participate in the regular school for a longer time for whatever reason, have by the school law the right to education in hospitals or institutions. Education that take place in other places than school most try to follow the same guidelines as his/hers usual school. This applies to students in elementary school, compulsory school, special school, Sami school, secondary school and upper secondary school. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out how three teachers at a hospital school plans their work with children in grade from 1 to 3, who suffer from cancer, especially brain tumor. How can the teachers at the hospital school plan and organize their teaching so that it´s possible for the children whit brain tumor to feel as normal as possible. How does the common work between the consultant nurse, teachers at the hospitals and their ordinary school prevent the children to feel like an outsider? Method: I have chosen to do a qualitative study followed by three interviews whit three informants who works at a hospital school. One interview with the head of the unit, one interview with the special education teacher and one interview with the consultant nurse who works as a contact for the affected students. Conclusions: The result of my thesis is primarily that it`s important to have a good contact, communication and attitude to the students, so that their time at the hospitalschool will be as normal as possible. And in that way minimize the risk to feel and bee seen as a outsider. Result: Hospitalschool is a very god communal operation for those students who needs it.

▼ ”Between normal and abnormal” is a qualitative literature study about adults with Aspergers syndrom. The study aims to understand how a person with Asperger syndrome understand himself. The study is built around two issues. These are; how does a person with Aspergers syndrom describe himself and how does the diagnos influence the self-image. The study interpreted four autobiographical books written by individuals with Asperger's syndrome based on a social constructive and social psychological approach. There is a risk that people who do not have the right or enough information about what an Asperger Diagnosis involves misunderstand the individual. This increases the risk that individuals with Asperger's syndrome may be devalued or get expectations of themselves that will be difficult to achieve. This may in turn have implications for self-esteem and self-perception. The results demonstrate that all writers feel that they are misunderstood, failed and different. The comparison is made with the "normal" and the feeling of being different gives a negative association. However, it also appears that when the diagnosis is obtained, there is a change in their understanding of the difficulties and life experiences they have. The feeling of being different gets a more positive association when their behavior becomes more legitimate, and there arises a sense of being part of the Asperger group which strengthens their self-esteem. Understanding themselves as deviant and odd change to a feeling of being normal though normal in a different way. This is also confirmed by other research (Larsson, 2007). The study also demonstrates that there is a dilemma between being the diagnos and being ones own person with ones own personality.

▼ This essay aims to examine how the disabled figure is represented in motion pictures and if these representations differ when the actors are disabled. It aims to shed some light on the social construction of normality and disability. The theoretical framework is that of stigma, social interaction and Crip Theory and the method we use is discourse analysis. The movies in which we examine this are as follow: Hur många lingon finns det i världen?, Hur många kramar finns det i världen?, Café de Flore and Le huitième jour. Our conclusion is that known stereotypes did not occur as much as limited course of action and the tendency to treat the disabled character as a group and not as individuals. Our result also indicates that the story of the disabled figure is not the one that is being told and how their humanity is something that has to be confirmed instead of being self-evident.

▼ Accurate prediction and control pervades domains such as engineering, physics, chemistry, and biology. Often, it is discovered that the systems under consideration cannot be well represented by linear, periodic nor random data. It has been shown that these systems exhibit deterministic chaos behavior. Deterministic chaos describes systems which are governed by deterministic rules but whose data appear to be random or quasi-periodic distributions. Deterministically chaotic systems characteristically exhibit sensitive dependence upon initial conditions manifested through rapid divergence of states initially close to one another. Due to this characterization, it has been deemed impossible to accurately predict future states of these systems for longer time scales. Fortunately, the deterministic nature of these systems allows for accurate short term predictions, given the dynamics of the system are well understood. This fact has been exploited in the research community and has resulted in various algorithms for short term predictions. Detection of
normality in deterministically chaotic systems is critical in understanding the system sufficiently to able to predict future states. Due to the sensitivity to initial conditions, the detection of normal operational states for a deterministically chaotic system can be challenging. The addition of small perturbations to the system, which may result in bifurcation of the normal states, further complicates the problem. The detection of anomalies and prediction of future states of the chaotic system allows for greater understanding of these systems. The goal of this research is to produce methodologies for determining states of
normality for deterministically chaotic systems, detection of anomalous behavior, and the more accurate prediction of future states of the system. Additionally, the ability to detect subtle system state changes is discussed. The dissertation addresses these goals by proposing new representational techniques and novel prediction methodologies. The value and efficiency of these methods are explored in various case studies. Presented is an overview of chaotic systems with examples taken from the real world. A representation schema for rapid understanding of the various states of deterministically chaotic systems is presented. This schema is then used to detect anomalies and system state changes. Additionally, a novel prediction methodology which utilizes Lyapunov exponents to facilitate longer term prediction accuracy is presented and compared with other nonlinear prediction methodologies. These novel methodologies are then demonstrated on applications such as wind energy, cyber security and classification of social networks.

▼ In this report, inhomogeneous Lévy processes are studied in a discrete observational model based on derivatives of the process. First, homogeneous Lévy models are defined and an already known nonparametric method, using Fourier techniques and call and put option prices, for estimating the parameters of the model is described based on Belomestny and Reiẞ (2006a). Previous research suggests that there is a need for an extension of this concept since option prices with different maturities produce significantly different results. After all, the assumption that the parameters of the model are the same for any time window is not realistic and better results could be achieved once this premise is rejected. That is why inhomogeneous Lévy processes are introduced and studied in this report. The estimation method for the homogeneous model from Belomestny and Reiẞ (2006a) is extended to fit into the inhomogeneous framework. Next, asymptotic
normality of the estimators is proven for these processes in this setting and confidence intervals are constructed using the finite sample variance method. Asymptotic
normality has already been shown and confidence intervals have been constructed in the homogeneous framework in the continuous observational model by Söhl (2014). Finally, data is simulated from an inhomogeneous Merton model to test the performance of the method and options from the S&P 500 index are used as a real-world application.

▼ In single-case research, multiple-baseline (MB) design is the most widely used design in practical settings. It provides the opportunity to estimate the treatment effect based on not only within-series comparisons of treatment phase to baseline phase observations, but also time-specific between-series comparisons of observations from those that have started treatment to those that are still in the baseline. In MB studies, the average treatment effect and the variation of these effects across multiple participants can be estimated using various statistical modeling methods. Recently, two types of statistical modeling methods were proposed for analyzing MB studies: a) within-series model and b) between-series model. The within-series model is a typical two-level multilevel modeling approach analyzing the measurement occasions within a participant, whereas the between-series model is an alternative modeling approach analyzing participants’ measurement occasions at certain time points, where some participants are in the baseline phase and others are in the treatment phase. Parameters of both within- and between-series models are generally estimated with restricted maximum likelihood (ReML) estimation and ReML is developed based on the assumption of normality (Hox, et al., 2010; Raudenbush & Bryk, 2002). However, in practical educational and psychological settings, observed data may not be easily assumed to be normal. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the robustness of analyzing MB studies with the within- and between-series models when level-1 errors are non-normal. A Monte Carlo study was conducted under the conditions where level-1 errors were generated from non-normal distributions in which skewness and kurtosis of the distribution were manipulated. Four statistical approaches were considered for comparison based on theoretical and/or empirical rationales. The approaches were defined by the crossing of two analytic decisions: a) whether to use a within- or between-series estimate of effect and b) whether to use REML estimation with Kenward-Roger adjustment for inferences or Bayesian estimation and inference. The accuracy of parameter estimation and statistical power and Type I error were systematically analyzed. The results of the study showed the within- and between-series models are robust to the non-normality of the level-1 error variance. Both within- and between-series models estimated the treatment effect accurately and statistical inferences were acceptable. ReML and Bayesian estimations also showed similar results in the current study. Applications and implications for applied and methodology researchers are discussed based on the findings of the study.

▼ In the era of Internet of Things (IoT) and big data, collecting, processing and analyzing enormous data faces unprecedented challenges even when being stored in preprocessed form. Anomaly detection, statistically viewed as identifying outliers having low probabilities from the modelling of data distribution p(x), becomes more crucial. In this Master thesis, two (supervised and unsupervised) novel deep anomaly detection frameworks are presented which can achieve state-of-art performance on a range of datasets.
Capsule net is an advanced artificial neural network, being able to encode intrinsic spatial relationship between parts and a whole. This property allows it to work as both a classifier and a deep autoencoder. Taking this advantage of CapsNet, a new anomaly detection technique named AnoCapsNet is proposed and three normality score functions are designed: prediction-probability-based (PP-based) normality score function, reconstruction-error-based (RE-based) normality score function, and a normality score function that combines prediction-probability-based and reconstruction-error-based together (named as PP+RE-based normality score function) for evaluating the "outlierness" of unseen images. The results on four datasets demonstrate that the PP-based method performs consistently well, while the RE-based approach is relatively sensitive to the similarity between labeled and unlabeled images. The PP+RE-based approach effectively takes advantages of both methods and achieves state-of-the-art results.
In many situations, neither the domain of anomalous samples can be fully understood, nor the domain of the normal samples is straightforward. Thus deep generative models are more suitable than supervised methods in such cases. As a variant of variational autoencoder (VAE), beta-VAE is designed for automated discovery of interpretable factorised latent representations from raw image data in a completely unsupervised manner. The t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), an unsupervised non-linear technique primarily used for data exploration and visualizing high-dimensional data, has advantages at creating a single map that reveals local and important global structure at many different scales. Taking advantages of both disentangled representation learning (using beta-VAE as an implementation) and low-dimensional neighbor embedding (using t-SNE as an implementation), another novel anomaly detection approach named AnoDM (stands for Anomaly detection based on unsupervised Disentangled representation learning and Manifold learning) is presented. A new anomaly score function is defined by combining (1) beta-VAE's reconstruction error, and (2) latent representations' distances in the t-SNE space. This is a general framework, thus any disentangled representation learning and low-dimensional embedding techniques can be applied. AnoDM is evaluated on both image and time-series data and achieves better results than models that use just one of the two measures and other existing advanced deep learning methods.

The main purpose of this investigation was to analyze the impact of factors such as: Controlability,
Normality and type of crime; in what counterfactual though generation by the test subjects is
concerned, and also in relation to the feelings of victims, and guilt attributions about the behavior
of a victim and the behavior an attacker. Eight subject groups were created and to each was given
one of eight created scenarios that differed between themselves in: controllable situation vs.
uncontrollable situation, normal situation vs. exceptional situations and the crime of insult vs. the
crime of physical aggression. The results showed that these three factors do have an impact over
the variables mentioned above, although its relevance tend to differ in relation to the specificity of
the dependent variable in question regarding which one of the three factors that would apply to it.
We noted however that in what victim focused dependent variables are concerned, controllability
assumed a more relevant role in what concerns statistical significant values between groups.

▼ Out-of-sample tests for equal predictive accuracy have been widely used in economics and finance and are regarded as the "ultimate test of a forecasting model". When two non-nested models are compared, Diebold and Mariano (DM 1995) point out that the t-statistic of the mean squared-error loss-differential is asymptotically standard normal. When two models are nested, however, Clark and McCracken (CM 2001, 2005, 2009) point out that due to the parameter prediction error (PEE), the statistics will result in non-standard distribution. Further more Clark and West (CW 2006, 2007) point out that the DM statistic for testing the equal predictive accuracy of two nested mean regression models gives a favor to a smaller (nested) model, because the DM statistic tends to be negative under the null hypothesis, penalizing the bigger (nesting) model for the finite sample parameter estimation sampling error. They point out that the negative bias can be corrected by adding a non-negative adjustment term. The adjusted DM statistics (DM plus the adjustment term) is equivalent to the "encompassing test".The thesis consists of three chapters: The first chapter is comparing predictive accuracy and model combination using encompassing test for Nested Quantile Models, we consider using the quantile model and check loss function. We show that the adjusted DM statistics is asymptotically standard normal when out-of-sample to in-sample ratio goes to infinity. The second chapter is comparing nested predictive regression models with persistent predictors, in which we introduce a persistent estimator in the second model. We show that the adjusted DM statistics will still be asymptotically standard normal due to the faster convergence rate of the second model. The third chapter is encompassing test for nested predictive regression models with near unit root and drift, the big model contains a persistent estimator with drift. We show regardless whether drift term (deterministic trend) or the coefficient of autoregressive process of the predictor (stochastic trend) dominates the model, due to the higher than root-n convergence rate of the coefficient in the second model, the adjusted DM statistics is asymptotically standard normal.

▼ As item response theory models are more frequently applied to psychological assessment, understanding the ramifications of failing to account for non-normality is of utmost importance, especially, considering the likelihood of encountering traits that are non-normally distributed in the population (e.g., anxiety, depression). Previous research has established concerns with regard to bias in item parameter and trait score estimates when non-normality is ignored, and, as such developed models to aid in minimizing bias. Once such model is the heteroscedastic GRM with a skewed latent trait (HSGRM). This research provides an in-depth examination of the viability and utility of the HSGRM. Under various degrees of skew and heteroscedasticity, including extreme on both, this research addresses the consequences of ignoring non-normality and how to address it. A simulation study was conducted to evaluate the ability of the HSGRM to provide improved item parameter estimates, and recover the shape of the distribution (i.e., skew). Results support the HSGRM as a major improvement over the traditional GRM when faced with non-normality in data due to skew in the trait and heteroscedastic errors.

▼ We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the Nadaraya-Watson and local linear estimators for the estimation of the regression function in a semiparametric regression model. We make use of the single index model and we use an estimator for the parametric component. We establish rates of convergence for the consistency of the Nadaraya-Watson and local linear estimators as well as the asymptotic
normality for the Nadaraya-Watson estimator. The main point of our study is that we do not assume a homoscedastic model. Also, some related results from the recent literature are reviewed.

▼ Cognitive dysfunction is widely considered to be a core feature of schizophrenia, yet subpopulations that are cognitively normal have been repeatedly identified. There is no agreed upon definition of cognitive
normality, with prevalence rates ranging from 0% to 55%, and the clinical and functional implications are unclear. Interpretation of cognitive
normality is further complicated by the possibility that normal-range patients have declined relative to premorbid ability. The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a deeper understanding of cognitive
normality and its clinical and functional implications. Study 1 assessed the prevalence and clinical and functional validity of two definitions of cognitive
normality: a narrow (i.e., IQ) and a broad (i.e., MCCB) definition. Participants included 99 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and 80 healthy controls. Prevalence rates of cognitive
normality ranged from 14% to 48%. Regardless of the criterion applied, cognitively normal patients were functionally disadvantaged relative to cognitively normal controls. They demonstrated no advantage in functionality or clinical symptom severity relative to cognitively impaired patients. Study 2 evaluated a cognitive decrement algorithm (Keefe, Eesley, & Poe, 2005) and its clinical and functional validity among 156 patients and 74 controls. Patients were classified as having average range cognition with a decrement (37.1%), average-range without a decrement (9.3%), and above-average range without a decrement (12.1%). The combination of above average-range cognition and lack of a cognitive decrement conferred a functional advantage among patients, but they remained functionally disadvantaged relative to controls. Study 3 assessed the utility of the functionally relevant Breakfast Task (Craik & Bialystok, 2006) in predicting disability relative to standard measures of cognition and symptom severity among 30 patients and 37 controls. Breakfast Task performance increased the ability to predict disability beyond that provided by cognitive and symptom measures. Results suggest that the prevalence of cognitive
normality (9.3% to 48%) is a byproduct of the definition used. There was insufficient evidence supporting the functional or clinical validity of any of the definitions of cognitive
normality, suggesting that the role of cognition in functioning has been largely over-emphasized in the literature. Ecologically valid tools, however, may hold promise for disability assessment.

▼ Epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder, affects over 50 million individuals worldwide. Thirty percent of these have seizures that are not amenable to medications, and of these, at least one-half may be candidates for surgical treatment. While epilepsy surgery maybe an option with high rates of seizure freedom, this does not necessarily guarantee a good psychosocial outcome. Despite well documented issues of post-operative adjustment difficulties, little information exists regarding post-surgical epilepsy patients and what they believe would have benefited them post-surgically, if they had received it pre-surgically. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore possible knowledge gaps around the surgical event. This qualitative needs assessment study involved interviewing post-surgical epilepsy patients. The results suggest pre-surgical information and support gaps exist and require change. Furthermore, in conjunction with our recently proposed predictive coding model of post-epilepsy surgery adaptation, our results provide the groundwork for developing a pre-operative intervention to address patient predictions and expectations.

We have used a qualitative approach to analyze 19 verdicts according to 2§ The Young Persons Act (LVU) about maltreated children. The purpose with this study was to investigate how the Social Welfare argues to the administrative court. This study was inspired by discourse analyze as method and theory with a theoretical concept of normality as an analytical tool. The result show that the Social Welfare argues about parents shortcoming and the abnormal parenthood in relations to childrens undefined needs. The result also show that the Social Welfare argues for compulsory care in terms of legal requirements to achieve legal relevance.
