An education between the lines. A multiplicity of texts. Mismatched frequencies and singular sonorities. This is the name of the game. Intercessors are secretly summoned. Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Samuel Beckett. Antonin Artaud. Virginia Woolf. Henry Miller. Franz Kafka. Maurice Blanchot. Friedrich Nietzsche. With each repetition a difference of intensity. Lines which traverse a time, a life, a thought. And the game goes on. New intercessors are invited. Clarice Lispector. Fernando Pessoa. Roland Barthes. Mikhail Bakhtin. And so many others, more imperceptibly, who knows. And what about the concepts? Maybe they can be found out there, cutting the lines of the text. Ill seen? Ill said?

▼ One of the most important and challenging problems
in scientific and engineering applications is to find solutions of
nonlinear equations, unconstrained optimization problems and
systems of nonlinear equations. In order to find out the
approximate solutions of these equations, one has to adopt
numerical techniques based on iteration procedures. Newton?s method
is probably the well-known iterative method for solving these
equations. In recent years, many modifications of Newton?s method
has been proposed in literature, which have either equal or better
performance than Newton?s method. In the present thesis an attempt
has been made to unify the classical existing methods and to remove
their (Newton?s method and its variants) defects. The thesis
consists of six chapters and main contents of each chapter are
furnished as follows : newlineChapter 1 is an introductory chapter
and gives a brief survey of literature. Several real world problems
have been considered for which the numerical solutions are required
for solving scalar nonlinear equations, unconstrained optimization
problems and systems of nonlinear equations. Further, some
classical methods have been introduced by discussing their merits
and demerits. The fundamental concepts and classification of
iterative methods and their striking features are also stated. The
research work on the iterative methods carried out in solving
nonlinear equations (for simple as well as multiple roots),
unconstrained optimization problems and systems of nonlinear
equations is also reviewed briefly. Chapter 2, eliminates the
defects of the classical Newton?s method by simple modifi- cations
of iterative processes. The proposed iterative methods are derived
by implementing approximations through a straight line, parabolic
and elliptical curves in the vicinity of the required root.
Further, the extensions of these iterative methods to the
unconstrained optimization problems and to systems of nonlinear
equations have been proposed.

▼ The public condenser tends to stress the importance of non-commercial architecture within the context of Copenhagen as an opposition to the concept of consumerism. According to Leslie Sklair (2010): “Consumerism - or more accurately, the culture-ideology of consumerism - refers to a set of beliefs and values, integral but not exclusive to the system of capitalist globalization, intended to make people believe that human worth is best ensured and happiness is best achieved in terms of our consumption and possessions.”In addition to that, according to ‘The Harvard Guide to Shopping’ by Rem Koolhaas, “Shopping is arguably the last remaining form of public activity”, and “perhaps the beginning of the 21st century will be remembered as the point where the urban could no longer be understood without shopping.” Nowadays shopping is taking over every program imaginable. As a parasite it attaches itself to different programs, finding ways to survive and dominate, invading almost all human activity (Leong, 2001). Through psychoanalysis and psychogramming, people are being manipulatively forced to consume even more for the sake of making economic profit (Hosoya & Schaefer, 2001).The fact that one of nowadays most common public activity in gathering people is been led by manipulative strategies is shocking and urges to consider a place for the public that does not intend to manipulate for the sake of making economic profit. Therefore the public condenser in Copenhagen provides a place in which multiple activities can take place for different target audiences, not for the sake of making profit, but for the sake of providing valuable and unique experiences to the public in complete honesty, trustworthiness and transparency. Here, value refers to the immaterial profit as a counter reaction on consumerism while uniqueness refers to the extraordinary activities that can be achieved without the need of extravagancy. Honesty and trustworthiness refer to the anti-manipulative character of the building, while transparency refers to its straightforwardness and (visual) permeability.

▼ High performance machines such as those used in the semiconductor industry, robotics or racing engines have lots of fast moving parts. The dynamic properties of these moving parts are crucial to the performance of the machine. Therefore these moving parts have to be carefully designed which is often a very time consuming iterative process. In this thesis a general method to optimize the dynamic properties of a structure utilizing topology optimization is investigated. More specifically, the method will be focused on the optimization of eigenfrequencies whilst achieving specific ratios between eigenfrequencies, as dynamic performance requirements are often linked to such criteria. We refer to this class of topology optimization problems as problems involving constrained eigenfrequencies. A particular case of interest is the desired multiplicity of two or more eigenfrequencies, that is a ratio of 1. Several crucial aspects of the topology optimization of eigenfrequencies are investigated, these are the material interpolation methods, mode tracking techniques, multiplicity problems and obtaining a discrete design. By comparing different material interpolation methods, a clear view on the effects of different methods is obtained, leading to solid arguments for selecting a linear material interpolation method for topology optimization of eigenfrequencies. A simple yet effective method of tracking the eigenmodes during the optimization process combined with a solution for the multiplicity problems is presented and verified to show similar results as a more complex analytical approach. A new method of obtaining a discrete design without applying penalization or modification of the eigenvalue problem has been developed using a modified objective function. This method shows promising results and is a good candidate for replacing the material interpolation penalization method. By combining these results, a general and capable framework for the topology optimization of constrained eigenfrequencies is obtained. Using the presented framework, a practical application of the method is given by the design of a cantilever used in an atomic force microscope. Feasible and well-performing designs have been generated, both from a functional and manufacturing point of view.

▼ This dissertation explores the notion of
multiplicity and its generalizations within the theory of commutative algebra. Chapter 2 is dedicated to calculating the limits which give rise to Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicities. We provide a formula for the
multiplicity of a module in terms of its summands. An example demonstrates that
multiplicity, dimension and rank alone are insufficient to give the
multiplicity of a specified power of the module. In the following chapter, we examine lengths given by a filtration, rather than powers of an ideal. We consider filtrations as generalizations of both valuations and ideal powers and identify a class of Rees valuations as Noetherian filtrations. We define a general j-
multiplicity for Noetherian filtrations and prove some of its characteristics. Chapter 4 is dedicated to ideals of submaximal analytic spread which remain nonzero when we apply the local cohomology functor. The final chapter is joint work with Tony Se. We analyze subrings of two-variable polynomial rings generated over a field, k, by monomials. We explicitly describe the asympototic behavior of a system of parameters and relate this to the Cohen-Macaulay property of the ring.

▼ In this work we discover for the first time a strong relationship between Geršgorin theory and the geometric multiplicities of eigenvalues. In fact, if λ is an eigenvalue of an n × n matrix A with geometric
multiplicity k, then λ is in at least k Geršgorin discs of A. Moreover, construct the matrix C by replacing, in every row, the (k − 1) smallest off-diagonal entries in absolute value by 0, then λ is in at least k Geršgorin discs of C. We also state and prove many new applications and consequences of these results as well as we update an improve some important existing ones.

▼ One of the goals of nuclear physics is to study the Equation of State (EOS) of nuclear matter. In order to create the nuclear matter at different densities, we collide different nuclei and detect the fragments after the collisions with different beam energies in the laboratory. Then we extract information about finite nuclei by analyzing the collected data with different assumptions.
As we know, quantum effects play an important role in many systems: the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, the specific heat of different metals, the suppression of density uctuations in a trapped Fermi gas, the enhancement of density fluctuations in a trapped Bose gas, the observation of Fermi pressure in trapped mixed Fermi and Bose gases, etc. The nucleus is a quantum many body system made of strongly interacting fermions, protons and neutrons (nucleons). Therefore, we are dealing with fermions and bosons in the nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is clear that we need to take into account the genuine quantum nature of particles when we extract the physical quantities for the EOS. In the past, some methods have employed the classical limit of low density and high temperature, e.g. double ratio thermometer, while other methods (e.g. two particle correlation) implement some quantum effects but they are only able to calculate one physical quantity, i.e. density p or temperature T.
We would like to develop a method which takes into account the quantum nature of particles to extract the temperature and density of nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions. In this dissertation, we propose a new thermometer which includes quantum effects as manifested in quadrupole momentum fluctuations and
multiplicity fluctuations of the detected particles. In the same framework, we are able to calculate the density of the studied particles. To test our method, we use the Constrained Molecular Dynamics (CoMD) model, which incorporates the Pauli principle, and we simulate the 40Ca + 40Ca collisions at different beam energies at impact parameter b = 1 fm up to 1000 fm/c. Later, we apply our method to do data analysis and extract the temperatures and densities for fermions and bosons respectively. The Fermi quenching for fermions is found in the simulation data. It has been confirmed in different experimental data. We also studied the possible Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) for bosons in the same framework with CoMD and CoMDα which includes the boson correlations. Comparing the results with neutron case, we can see that the Coulomb effects play a role in the data analysis. To explore our method even further, we introduce the Coulomb correction for charged particles (both fermions and bosons). A method borrowed from electron scattering was adopted and applied to classical as well as quantum systems. In the model calculations, it was observed that when taking into account those effects, the T of p and n (as well as composite fermions in the classical case) are very similar, while the densities are not affected by the corrections. But for bosons,…

▼ People from different ages and cultural backgrounds look for a place where they can gather and engage in certain activities, but there is no such space, like a community center, within the site, which exerts a negative influence on social coherence. How to use the architectural approach to improve the neighborhood’s social coherence within a multicultural context? More specifically, how to make the community center recognizable and iconic enough to attract neighborhoods, citizens or even visitors; how to turn indoor/outdoor areas to functional/gathering spaces which increase the interaction between locals from different age and ethnic groups; and how to help locals adopt a united neighborhood identity. Based on current trends and cases, a new type of community center which embraces multiple functions has become the mainstream of public buildings in Western Europe. These new urban living rooms welcome everyone. This studio investigates this new type of building by research and design. The research part includes research on context and precedents. The former gives us a whole picture of city, people and society which is related to the sites, the latter inspires us and helps us learn from those practices, both success and failure. During which time, the Research Methods seminar encourages us to review architectural discourse in a broader perspective, then locate our own architectural positions, while the Research Methods tutorial empowers our imagination, helping us develop our own manifesto that reflects the project’s ambition. Having being equipped with all this knowledge, we will have the ability to develop our
multiplicity projects in a more logical and powerful way, which enriches the design concept of the public condenser and fulfill our own design ambitions.

▼ Multiples are thought to be at increased risk for developmental outcome deficits in the preschool years, following preterm birth. However, little research has been conducted to determine whether this group remains at higher risk in the age of artificial reproductive techniques and the modern NICU. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether
multiplicity is a risk factor for neuropsychological outcome deficits in a sample of 118 preschoolers (49 multiples, 75 singletons) born prematurely (<34 weeks gestation). As predicted, there were significant relationships between
multiplicity and outcome measures, however, the direction of the effects were opposite to our prediction, with multiplies demonstrating superior performance. Additionally, significant
multiplicity by sex interactions revealed a female twin advantage over male twin and singleton performance. In this preschool age sample, preterm multiples were not at a disadvantage when compared to singleton counterparts, demonstrating either equivalent or superior neuropsychological performance.

▼ Proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider provide insight into fundamental dynamics at unprecedented energy scales. After the discovery of the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS experiments completed the Standard Model picture of particle physics in 2012, the focus turned to investigation of new phenomena beyond the Standard Model. Variations on Supersymmetry, which has strong theoretical underpinnings and a wide potential particle phenomenology, garnered attention in particular. Preliminary results, however, yielded no new particle discoveries and set limits on the possible physical properties of supersymmetric models. This thesis describes a search for supersymmetric particles that could not have been detected by earlier efforts. The study probes collisions with a center of mass energy of 13 TeV detected by ATLAS from 2015 to 2016 that result in events with a large number of jets. This search is sensitive to decays of heavy particles via cascades, which result in at least seven hadronic jets and some missing energy. Constraints on the properties of reclustered large-radius jets are used to improve the sensitivity. The main Standard Model backgrounds are removed using a template method that extrapolates background behavior from final states with fewer jets. No excess is observed over prediction, so limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses in the context of two different theoretical models. Gluino masses below 1500 and 1600 GeV, respectively, are excluded, a significant extension of the limits set by previous analyses.

▼ Stellar binaries and their ubiquity have implications for a variety of astrophysics. Their configurations hold clues to the formation and dynamical histories of stars and planets. The most common type of binary systems may well be those consisting of M-dwarf stars, whose
multiplicity statistics has traditionally been less well-constrained. Recent growing interest in exoplanets has mobilized bountiful observing resources to M-dwarfs, now deemed to be among the most favourable and accessible planet hosts. Using data originally intended for exoplanet studies, the first part of this thesis employs classical as well as novel techniques to characterize individual M-dwarf binaries systems and their ensemble statistics in a variety of unfamiliar regimes and environments.
Very tight binaries can manifest as eclipsing systems in transiting planet surveys. Among the sample of field M-dwarf targets monitored by {\emph{Kepler}}, I detect 12 eclipsing binaries from light curve analysis. To translate these detections into a short-period binarity measurement for the M-dwarfs, I develop a variant of the exoplanet occurrence rate calculation formalism to define a ‘number of stars per star’ metric. The analysis implies that an M-dwarf has on average 0.11 M-dwarf companions within a 90-day orbit (∼ 0.4 AU). Finally, I derive a period distribution for the close binaries using parametric fits and non-parametric estimators.
Adaptive optics imaging can visually resolve nearby binaries down to ∼few AU. From a survey of local young moving groups with the Magellan Adaptive Optics system that was originally intended to look for giant planets, I present the detection of 27 visual companions (0\farcs04 – 4\farcs0: 1 – 300 AU) to pre-main sequence K/M-dwarfs. I perform astrometric and photometric measurements, from which I determine the masses and physical separations of components in each system. I find the overall binarity rate for the M-dwarf subsample to be at least 30
+5-4%. In concert with data from the literature, I compute the first
multiplicity statistics that span M- to F-dwarfs in moving groups aged between 10 to 100 Myr. The results display no evidence of evolution during this age range, while the flat
multiplicity rate with mass is in mild tension with the trend in the field.
Gravitational microlensing using satellites in conjunction with ground-based surveys have enabled us to reliably measure properties of planets and stellar binaries across Galactic distances. I present the discovery of OGLE-2014-BLG-0962, a lensing event that was observed by both ground-based observatories and the {\emph{Spitzer}} satellite. Joint modelling measures a microlensing parallax and concludes that the lens system is a mid-M+M binary deep in the Galactic bulge. I compile a sample of similarly well-characterized events from the ongoing {\emph{Spitzer}} microlensing campaign. With this sample, I test Galactic models in the Bayesian framework that is commonly used to infer lens properties in the absence of parallax, validating their…

▼ Can the
multiplicity in perception, usage and
manifestation of architectural events be orchestrated to provide a
better fit between users and architectural space? Our experience of
architecture is a collective experience of all other architecture
we have known. Events do not operate in isolation but are always
linked to a
multiplicity of phenomena. Perceptions of events as
discrete entities neglect to recognize this system of relationships
between part-to-part and part-to-whole. The spaces we design
however, afford the possibility for design with manifest awareness
of these interdependencies. This thesis addresses the
potentialities of making the inter-relationship or the collective
our central focus. Narrative is used as a methodological tool for
identifying key project issues. Multiple narratives are interwoven
to identify the nature of the design problem. The thesis explores
how a given spatial structure can be appropriated to address user
needs more closely. It encourages a situation-specific approach to
design.

▼ Multiplicity is a common problem in multiple testing
for both frequentist and Bayesian approaches. This thesis considers
Bayesian approach to the multiple testing problem for different
types of data. The first chapter explains the problem of multiple
testing and provides backgrounds of both frequentist and Bayesian
solutions.Chapter 2 investigates Bayesian multiple testing
procedure for two-groups model for independent and normally
distributed data. First, we provide results from a simulation-based
evaluation of the frequentist features of the Bayesian approach to
multiple testing in a variety of scenarios. In the absence of a
specified loss function, we suggest the use of frequentist error
rates to determine a suitable cut-off for the posterior probability
to make a decision about a null. We then introduce a loss function
that may be useful when sparsity is deemed desirable. This sparsity
inducing loss function (SIL) can be thought of as a modified
version of the usual 0-1 loss. It assigns a smaller loss for
non-discovery when the signal is close to zero; it is bounded and
is computationally similar to 0-1 loss. A numerical comparison of
the performance of SIL with the 0-1 loss, absolute error loss, and
with some frequentist approaches is carried out by using simulated
and real data. Additionally, an empirical Bayes approach is used
with SIL and compared with the procedures given in Malgorzata et
al. (2007) using simulation. The third chapter examines the
objective Bayesian multiple testing approach for discrete
independent data. We consider simultaneous testing of multiple null
hypotheses concerning two proportions under different settings
using Bayesian approach. We use an intrinsic prior with different
choices of priors for the training sample size and a mode-based
Beta prior. We use simulated and real data sets to compare the
results obtained by using these priors. Later, we consider
Empirical Bayes procedures for both the intrinsic and Beta priors
that can be good approximations for the Fully Bayesian approaches.
Additionally, the results from the Bayesian approaches are compared
with those of certain commonly used frequentist procedures using
simulations and real data sets. Chapter 4 further generalizes
multiple testing problem for dependent discrete data. We take into
account the correlation between the proportions (response rates) by
utilizing from the conditional autoregressive (CAR) type prior in
control group to get a better control for
multiplicity problem by
using appropriate priors. We perform some simulations to study some
frequentist features of the proposed procedure with suggested
priors. The proposed Bayesian approach is shown to have some
advantages when compared with a Bayesian procedure that ignores the
correlation and some certain frequentist methods.

▼ Hydrodynamic
multiplicity in the trickle flow, or
low interaction, regime is a well documented phenomenon. Multiple
hydrodynamic states are often presented in the form of hysteresis
loops where the hydrodynamic parameter studied are shown as a
function of the operating history of the bed, i.e. liquid and gas
flow rates. In extreme cases the lower leg, representing an
increase in liquid flow rate on a pre-wetted and drained bed, is
commonly referred to as the Levec mode. The upper extreme, referred
to as the Kan-liquid mode, represents a decrease in liquid flow
rate after operation in the high interaction regime. The many
reported studies investigating liquid-solid mass transfer in
trickle beds have generally used either the dissolution or
electrochemical techniques. Numerous researchers have used their
data to develop correlations predicting solid-liquid mass transfer
coefficients. Most of these studies do not specify the
multiplicity
mode of operation. Only two studies (Sims et al. (1993) and Van der
Merwe, Nicol&Al-Dahhan (2008)) use both the Levec and
Kan-liquid operating modes. Both of these studies suggest that
solid-liquid mass transfer also exhibit
multiplicity behaviour
although the trends suggested or speculated differ from each other.
Sims et al. (1993) found that a Kan-liquid operated bed will
outperform a Levec operated bed; however in contrast to this Van
der Merwe et al. (2008) speculated that a Levec operated bed is
better suited for liquid limited reactions due to enhanced
liquid-solid mass transfer in the Levec mode as a result of faster
interstitial velocity. This study showed that solid-liquid mass
transfer coefficients, measured with both the dissolution and
electrochemical technique, show
multiplicity behaviour. Two
distinct operating regions were found, which corresponds to the
Levec and Kan-liquid modes. Measurements taken using the
electrochemical technique yielded solid-liquid mass transfer
coefficients larger than those measured using the dissolution
method. The experimental results agree with the trend found by Sims
et al. (1993) but the mass transfer coefficients in this study were
significantly lower. Additionally it was shown that the difference
in mass transfer coefficients, in the two modes, cannot be
explained by merely compensating for the differences in wetting
efficiency and interstitial velocity, suggesting that the Levec
mode has a larger percentage of stagnant or poorly irrigated zones.
It was also shown that mass transfer coefficients measured at the
top of the column is higher than those measured at the bottom,
suggesting that the flow structure is changing as a function of
axial length. Lastly, with regards to electrochemical measurements
of liquid-solid mass transfer, it was shown that measurements using
a single particle electrode compared well to that of a multiple
packing electrode.

As a secondary character from the Gospel story that recounts the martyrdom of John the Baptist, Salome became one of the favorite themes in art and literature of the second half of the nineteenth century. As one of the “ femmes fatales ”, this figure corresponds to the Fin de Siècle imagination : the man’s weakness , the women’s power, the refined aesthetic but morbid, the decadence mixed with an irremediable terror. The famous play of Oscar Wilde made her the subject of a philosophical reflection of the desire and the death. The end of the nineteenth century doesn’t mean the end of the evolution of this mythic figure. On the contrary, it becomes a new starting point. In the twentieth century, Salome’s story has been enriched not only at the structural level, but also by a formal diversification. Today, the writings about Salome form a system. The formation and transformation of this system requires an observation that pays particular attention to the continuity and rupture, to the inheritance and reversal. When the dancer is compared to the martyr, the Salome’s story has to face a series of contrast : man and woman, word and vision, asceticism and desire ... The uncertainty and the diversity of interpretation allow the story of Salome to resist the passage of time. A multitude of texts on the same myth creates a space where the intertextual study is possible.

▼ the author has designed few barrelene molecules in such a way that the structural features of these compounds will enable them to undergo intriguing triplet state mediated di- -methane rearrangement. The strategy involved the preparation of dibenzobarrelenes appended with a fused ring systems, thereby restricting the rotational freedom of the bridgehead substituent. We describe these systems as ‘tethered barrelenes’. These tethered barrelenes enabled us to examine the effect of orientation and the nature of the bridgehead-substituents in controlling the regioselectivity of di-π-methane rearrangement in a more systematic fashion. In this background, the thesis entitled “SYNTHESIS AND PHOTOCHEMICAL TRANSFORMATIONS OF A FEW TETHERED BARRELENES” reveals our attempts to explore the factors controlling the regioselectivity of di-π-methane rearrangement displayed by dibenzobarrelenes. Moreover, we have observed interesting dark reactions of suitable substituted tethered dibenzosemibullvalenes in a few cases

Cats cradle is an enterprise that conjugates multiple semiosis for the purpose of investigating the being of thought here understood as the body that thinks from the contact with other pre-existent thoughts. By the intersection of concepts, image, method and sonority, it is intended to build a stretching Field in order to outbreak new sensibilities. All poetic operations that constitute the dissertation, the vídeo and other graphic pieces of Cats cradle, were guided by the lines that abound from the problematization of the being of thought: its expressivity, its insistense on differentiation, its capacity to articulate a myriad of temporal relations, to evade present, to enter into chaos and extract from there the unfamiliar. So it is a trap for repetition and way to resist the return oh the same by the affirmation of the different and by perverting the establishment; it is a gesture that triggers a permanent state of revolution that plays with the singularities to settle new angles os perception. Since it is impossible to separate the physical portion of a work of art from its mental creative process, it is going to be listed also some of the technical and material procedures used to compose the vídeo Cats cradle and the series of unfolded works. Finally, it Will be presented concise notes about the creative and the conceptual routes which permitted the consolidation of this dissertion.

From the global observables that allows the characterization of the heavy ion collisions at relativistic energies, the particle multiplicity is one of the most fundamental observables, directly related to the energy density of the collision. There will be presented results about the study of central collision charged particle multiplicity in Pb - Pb collisions at the 2.76 TeV center of mass energy using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The particle multiplicity is measured using two different methods in the || < 2:5 rapidity interval, deploying the ATLAS inner tracker semiconductor system. The event selection plays a crucial role in this analysis and is applied on data acquired using a minimum bias trigger. Imposing the condition of coincidence between the two Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC) arms (|| > 8.3) and the coincidence of the Minimum Bias Trigger Scintillator (MBTS) detector (2.1 < || <3.8) the electromagnetic dissociation events are removed from the sample. For this work, events produced by the HIJING event generator were also analyzed and the simulated data was reconstructed using the same algorithms used on data. The multiplicities and inclusive particle density measured for most central collisions are in good agreement with the ones measured by other experiments.

▼ Statistics
There are a number of available statistical methods for adaptive designs, among which the combination method of Bauer and Kohne's (1994) is well known and widely used. In this work, we revisit the the Bauer-Kohne method in three ways: overall FWER control for single-hypothesis in a two-stage adaptive design, overall FWER control for two-hypothesis in a two-stage adaptive design, and overall FDR control for multiple-hypothesis in a two-stage adaptive design. We first take the Bauer-Kohne method in a more direct manner to have more flexibility in the choice of the early rejection and acceptance boundaries as well as the second stage critical value based on the chosen combination function. Our goal is not to develop a new method, but focus primarily on developing a comprehensive understanding of two-stage designs. Rather than tying up the early rejection and acceptance boundaries by considering the second stage critical value to be the same as that of the level á combination test, as done in the original Bauer-Kohne method, we allow the second-stage critical value to be determined from prefixed early rejection and acceptance boundaries. An explicit formula is derived for the overall Type I error probability to determine the second stage critical value from these stopping boundaries not only for Fisher's combination function but also for other types of combination function. Tables of critical values corresponding to several different choices of early rejection and acceptance boundaries and these combination functions are presented. A dataset from a clinical study is used to apply the different methods based on directly computed second stage critical values from pre fixed stopping boundaries and discuss the outcomes in relation to those produced by the original Bauer-Kohne method. We then extend the Bauer-Kohne method to two-hypothesis setting and propose a stepwise-combination method for a two-stage adaptive design. In particular, we modify Holm's step-down procedure (1979) and suggest a step-down combination method to control the overall FWER at a desired level á. In many scientific studies requiring simultaneous testing of multiple null hypotheses, it is often necessary to carry out the multiple testing in two stages to decide which of the hypotheses can be rejected or accepted at the first stage and which should be followed up for further testing having combined their p-values from both stages. Unfortunately, no multiple testing procedure is available yet to perform this task meeting pre-specified boundaries on the first-stage p-values in terms of the false discovery rate (FDR) and maintaining a control over the overall FDR at a desired level. Our third goal in this work is to present two procedures, extending the classical Benjamini-Hochberg (BH) procedure and its adaptive version incorporating an estimate of the number of true null hypotheses from single-stage to a two-stage setting. These procedures are theoretically proved to control the overall FDR when the pairs of first- and second-stage p-values…

▼ Hydrodynamic
multiplicity in the trickle flow, or low
interaction, regime is a well documented phenomenon. Multiple
hydrodynamic states are often presented in the form of hysteresis
loops where the hydrodynamic parameter studied are shown as a
function of the operating history of the bed, i.e. liquid and gas
flow rates. In extreme cases the lower leg, representing an
increase in liquid flow rate on a pre-wetted and drained bed, is
commonly referred to as the Levec mode. The upper extreme, referred
to as the Kan-liquid mode, represents a decrease in liquid flow
rate after operation in the high interaction regime. The many
reported studies investigating liquid-solid mass transfer in
trickle beds have generally used either the dissolution or
electrochemical techniques. Numerous researchers have used their
data to develop correlations predicting solid-liquid mass transfer
coefficients. Most of these studies do not specify the
multiplicity
mode of operation. Only two studies (Sims et al. (1993) and Van der
Merwe, Nicol&Al-Dahhan (2008)) use both the Levec and
Kan-liquid operating modes. Both of these studies suggest that
solid-liquid mass transfer also exhibit
multiplicity behaviour
although the trends suggested or speculated differ from each other.
Sims et al. (1993) found that a Kan-liquid operated bed will
outperform a Levec operated bed; however in contrast to this Van
der Merwe et al. (2008) speculated that a Levec operated bed is
better suited for liquid limited reactions due to enhanced
liquid-solid mass transfer in the Levec mode as a result of faster
interstitial velocity. This study showed that solid-liquid mass
transfer coefficients, measured with both the dissolution and
electrochemical technique, show
multiplicity behaviour. Two
distinct operating regions were found, which corresponds to the
Levec and Kan-liquid modes. Measurements taken using the
electrochemical technique yielded solid-liquid mass transfer
coefficients larger than those measured using the dissolution
method. The experimental results agree with the trend found by Sims
et al. (1993) but the mass transfer coefficients in this study were
significantly lower. Additionally it was shown that the difference
in mass transfer coefficients, in the two modes, cannot be
explained by merely compensating for the differences in wetting
efficiency and interstitial velocity, suggesting that the Levec
mode has a larger percentage of stagnant or poorly irrigated zones.
It was also shown that mass transfer coefficients measured at the
top of the column is higher than those measured at the bottom,
suggesting that the flow structure is changing as a function of
axial length. Lastly, with regards to electrochemical measurements
of liquid-solid mass transfer, it was shown that measurements using
a single particle electrode compared well to that of a multiple
packing electrode.

▼ The measurement of charge-dependent correlations between positively and negatively charged particles as a function of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle, known as the \emph{balance functions}, provide insight to the properties of matter created in high-energy collisions. The balance functions are argued to probe the creation time of the particles and are also sensitive to the collective motion of the system. In this thesis, I present the results of the measured balance functions in p – Pb collisions at √{s
NN} = 5.02~TeV obtained with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are compared with balance functions measured in pp and Pb – Pb collisions at √{s}=7~TeV and √{s
NN} = 2.76~TeV, respectively. The width of the balance functions in both pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle for non-identified charged particles decreases with increasing
multiplicity in all three systems, for particles with low transverse momentum value (p
T < 2~GeV/c). For higher values of transverse momentum the balance functions become narrower and exhibit no
multiplicity dependence. The experimental findings are compared to different models (PYTHIA8, DPMJET, HIJING and AMPT). The comparison with models seems to indicate that for the Pb – Pb system Δ\varphi is determined mainly by radial flow, while Δη is less sensitive. In addition, the color reconnection mechanism emerged as a necessary ingredient in understanding the
multiplicity dependence observed in the width of the balance function for small systems.

▼ Abstract: This work presents the school variations and the multiplicities in the thought during meetings occurred in the school enclosure. Materials are presented which can not be described but exhibited at a level of sensitivity beyond any interpretation, judgment or categories of analysis that conclude the knowledge. Here, passages of this context are tried where one tries to present, in a plastic level, either by the means, by the cracks or by the subsoils, small possibilities of creation of lines of escape. Possible scenes present themselves in a school context outlining styles and assemblages. It is an invitation to enter into an unknown field, or that is forged to bring to the surface said, not said, real and fictitious speeches muffled by a school routine, but still possible to be penetrated by other sensations, other tonalities, other learning

▼ In this dissertation, we will analyze the work of Luigi Pirandello and his involvement with the masks problematic having as horizon possible similarities and differences with the writings of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Being this objective of the present work, we will try to draw a parallel, initially between the ancient tragedy and modern, reflecting the disharmony with Pirandello on the subject and, with Nietzsche in certain specific criticisms of the alleged unity of the subject. Along the way, will emerge, differentially, the themes of the suffering of the individual, the "I" multiple and misfit of the subject that will support, along with the "conscience" of multiplicity, for a finding of coherence waving to the masks

▼ The ability of inspection agencies and facility operators to measure powders containing several actinides is increasingly necessary as new reprocessing techniques and fuel forms are being developed. These powders are difficult to measure with nondestructive assay (NDA) techniques because neutrons emitted from induced and spontaneous fission of different nuclides are very similar. A neutron
multiplicity technique based on first principle methods was developed to measure these powders by exploiting isotope-specific nuclear properties, such as the energy-dependent fission cross sections and the neutron induced fission neutron
multiplicity. This technique was tested through extensive simulations using the Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) code and by one measurement campaign using the Active Well Coincidence Counter (AWCC) and two measurement campaigns using the Epithermal Neutron
Multiplicity Counter (ENMC) with various (α,n) sources and actinide materials. Four potential applications of this first principle technique have been identified: (1) quantitative measurement of uranium, neptunium, plutonium, and americium materials; (2) quantitative measurement of mixed oxide (MOX) materials; (3) quantitative measurement of uranium materials; and (4) weapons verification in arms control agreements. This technique still has several challenges which need to be overcome, the largest of these being the challenge of having high-precision active and passive measurements to produce results with acceptably small uncertainties.

▼ We consider a family of examples falling into the following context (first considered by Vinberg): Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over the complex numbers. A subgroup, K, of fixed points of a finite-order automorphism acts on the Lie algebra of G. Each eigenspace of the automorphism is a representation of K. Let g1 be one of the eigenspaces. We consider the harmonic polynomials on g1 as a representation of K, which is graded by homogeneous degree. Given any irreducible representation of K, we will see how its
multiplicity in the harmonic polynomials is distributed among the various graded components. The results are described geometrically by counting integral points on faces of a polyhedron. The
multiplicity in each graded component is given by intersecting these faces with an expanding sequence of shells.
