▼ The prediction of the moderator temperature distribution in a CANDU reactor is important in establishing its ability to act as an emergency heat sink for certain beyond design basis accidents. This analysis typically relies on computational models which are benchmarked against experimental data from small-scale test facilities. These small-scale models prioritize the matching of the Archimedes number (Ar) of the full-scale reactor, which represents the ratio of buoyancy forces to inertial forces. Concerns regarding similarity between the reactor and small-scale facilities may exist due to a large difference in scale, as well as geometric simplifications made due to practical limitations. This study examined the behaviour within an approximately 1/16 scale facility representative of the Bruce A calandria vessel, which features a unique inlet and outlet configuration. Experimental measurements were obtained for a range of power and flow conditions. Unsteady RANS simulations of the small-scale facility were also performed using the realizable k-epsilon model. Goals of the study included the assessment of the unique moderator inlet on the flow patterns inside the calandria vessel and how well existing CFD modelling approaches replicated these features. The observed flow and temperature distributions in the scale facility did not appear highly sensitive to changes in Ar. For all tested conditions, a large front-to-back recirculation pattern resulted from the asymmetric inlet arrangement. Peak temperatures consistently occurred toward the front of the vessel where inertial flows were assisted by buoyancy induced flows. Under steady-state conditions, unsteady and three-dimensional behaviour was observed within the vessel. Temperature fluctuations near the upper rear end of the vessel arose from the unstable interaction between cool downward flow from the inlets and upward buoyant flow from the tube bank. In the peak temperature regions, flow direction was relatively consistent in the upward direction. The simulations tended to overpredict the peak temperatures within the vessel by approximately 0.5 – 3.8 ºC. This behaviour was attributed to the model tending to underpredict the upward velocities entering the base of the tube bank in the peak temperature regions. As Ar increased and buoyancy effects became more significant in determining the local velocities, agreement between the predicted and measured velocities was improved. The similarity between the small-scale model and the full-size reactor was also assessed through comparisons to existing simulations of the full-size calandria. There was qualitative similarity between the two geometries, albeit at lower Ar for the small-scale facility. This suggested that buoyancy effects were more significant in the small-scale facility compared to the full-size calandria. This was attributed to the use of surface heating (as opposed to volumetric heating in the reactor), and relatively high surface heat fluxes caused by a reduced number of tube bank… Advisors/Committee Members: Novog, David, Engineering Physics.

▼ There is a clear call to use evidence-based practice (EBP) in schools, and a growing knowledge base of practices that have proven to be effective in helping students achieve in educational settings. In addition, the current trends of Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) and Response to Intervention (RtI) advocate for preventative and proactive strategies. Token economies (TE) are one intervention that is proactive and can be flexible to use with students across a wide range of behaviors and settings. According to Higgins, Williams, and McLaughlin, token economy (TE) is an effective way to improve classroom behavior. Unfortunately, limited recent research is available that evaluated the effects and moderators of token economies in classroom settings. The purpose of this investigation was to Meta-analyze the single case research on TE implemented in school and is the first to offer effect size analysis and identify moderators. The use of TE's has been widely established as an evidence-based intervention for use in prisons, psychiatric hospitals, and school settings. However, very few articles discuss size of effects to expect, the essential elements required, or the practical implementation issues within a classroom. Many myths surround the use of a TE, i.e., many assume a token system is effective only for individuals and this is not so, as TE is effective for groups as well as individuals. In an age of accountability and emphasis on preventative evidence based practice evidence for using a TE and how to implement a TE is needed in our literature. Empirical evidence for the use of a token economy in a classroom is presented along with suggested implementation ideas. Twenty four studies were included in this Meta-analysis with an overall combined Tau-U ES of .78 of data showing improvement between phase A and B with CI90 [.72, .83]. Tau-U effect sizes ranged from .35 to 1.0. TE is effective with all ages evaluated (ages 3 - 15); however, statistically significant results indicated it was more effective with ages 6 - 15. Active ingredients (i.e. procedural steps) were evaluated, combined, and reported. Results indicate that TE is an evidence-based intervention to increase academic readiness behaviors and to decrease inappropriate behaviors. Advisors/Committee Members: Vannest, Kimberly J. ▼ Chronic headache (HA), a common condition among young adults, is exacerbated by stress. Arousal reducing techniques, such as relaxation training (RT), are moderately effective as stress-management techniques. Suppression of negative emotions, such as anger, has also been shown to worsen stress and pain. Previously, our laboratory found that an innovative 3-session, group-based anger awareness and expression training (AAET) intervention was comparable to group relaxation training (RT) in improving outcomes in HA, and both treatments were more beneficial than no intervention. However, it is likely that individuals respond differently to these interventions. A person's baseline emotion regulation abilities, assertiveness, and ambivalence over emotional expression likely influence their response to these interventions. Therefore, secondary analyses were conducted to explore how alexithymia and it's facets (difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, and externally oriented thinking), ambivalence over anger expression, and assertiveness, moderated the effects of AAET, RT, compared with each other and no intervention. A sample of 127 young adults with chronic HA were randomized to 1 of the 3 conditions (AAET, RT, or no-intervention control), and headache frequency, severity, and duration, physical symptoms, and affect were assessed at baseline and 6-week follow-up. Results indicated that AAET is beneficial at reducing headache symptoms, physical health problems, and anxiety for individuals who have difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings, whereas RT has very minimal benefits for these individuals. In contrast, externally oriented thinking predicted greater physical symptoms after AAET compared to RT. Results also demonstrated that AAET is beneficial at reducing headache severity for individuals who are ambivalent over anger expression. Furthermore, AAET was effective at increasing positive affect for individuals who have a high baseline levels of assertiveness, but not useful for individuals with low assertiveness. These findings suggest that a brief, group-based intervention that incorporates anger awareness and expression skills can be beneficial for a subset of individuals with chronic HA. ▼ Purpose: Current evidence demonstrates the superior efficacy of non-pharmacologic psychosocial interventions to address the impacts of dementia for both the person with dementia (PWD) and caregiver. The Reducing Disability in Dementia (RDAD) intervention capitalizes on the benefits of both behavioral skill training and exercise, and is currently being implemented in the community via a translational trial. Exploration of moderating variables furthers the mission of translational science by evaluating who will benefit most, allowing for improved clinical application and efficient resource allocation. This study sought to explore how dyad characteristics may impact the most proximal measures of the intervention, adherence to the targets that theoretically lead to improved outcomes; physical activity, pleasant events, and behavioral modification plans. Methods: A hierarchical regression approach was used to evaluate how the variables of caregiver gender, baseline depression, behavioral burden, PWD gender, baseline cognitive impairment, behavioral disturbance, and dyad relationship affect adherence to two of the key targets of the intervention, pleasant events and attempting behavioral plans. Due to the over-dispersion of the physical activity adherence outcome a negative binomial regression was applied to evaluate the same participant factors on adherence to physical activity. Results: The sample PWDs had a mean age of 81, gender was 51% male, mean (SD) Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) score was 15.48 (7.17); indicating a broad range of cognitive impairment. Informal caregiver mean age was 69, were predominately female (74%), 64% were spouses, 29% were adult children, and the remaining 7% of caregivers were friends or other relatives. Neither caregivers nor PWD factors significantly moderated adherence to pleasant event frequency. Completion of behavioral plans was significantly moderated by PWD gender and cognitive impairment, b = 0.11, SE = 0.05, t(177) = 2.26, p < 0.05; PWD gender and relationship to the caregiver b = -4.84, SE = 2.24, t(177) = -2.16, p < 0.05; and dyad relationship and behavioral disturbance b = -2.62, SE = 1.07, t(177) = -2.46, p < 0.05. The impact of RDAD on increases in physical activity was significantly moderated by PWD gender χ2 = 3.77, p=0.05; cognitive impairment χ2 = 8.03, p<0.05, and behavioral disturbance χ2 = 9.91, p<0.01. Conclusion: These results suggest PWD factors impact adherence to the physical activity and behavioral plan components of RDAD, while caregiver factors have no significant influence. This is one of the first studies to identify which member of the dyad exerts more influence on intervention uptake. ▼ This study attempt to know the campus experience of college students, and we will explore the relationship among optimism, physical and mental health, creative self-efficacy, and innovative behavior. The study is based on positive psychology, and view from preventive perspective. We will find out the optimism and their theories, and also know about the state of creative, physical and mental health on college students. In addition to, to understand will optimism impact creative self-efficacy, then creative self-efficacy affect innovative behavior or not. Ultimately, this study attempts to understand physical and mental health how to affect the relationship between optimism, creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior. This study completed a self-report survey which consists of four instruments : Life Orientation Test-Revised Scale, Creative Self-Efficacy Scale, Innovative Behavior Sclae, and General Health Questionnaire. Pre-test in a university at southern in Taiwan, after confirm it reliability is suitable, we start to sent the formal questionnaire to the university at southern in Taiwan. Data form 327 college students (male = 184, female = 188). The statistic methods used in this study are reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analysis. In summary, this study discovered that: (1) It is positive relationship between optimism and creative self-efficacy on college students. (2) It is positive relationship between creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior on college students. (3) Somatic symptoms, anxiety and insomnia, and social dysfunction are moderate the positive relationship between optimism and creative self-efficacy. (4) Severe depression is moderate the positive relationship between creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior. Finally, we will provide some recommendations base on the research results. ▼ Inadequate nutrition has been shown to adversely impact brain development and cognitive functioning (Pollitt, Lewis, Garza, & Shulman, 1983). Unhealthy eating practices are frequently formed in college-aged samples; individuals in this age-range may be at risk for developing dangerous dieting behaviors (Neumark-Sztainer, Butler, & Palti, 1995). Studies examining the acute impact of eating regular meals on cognition have reported inconsistent findings, necessitating the exploration of moderators to possibly help explain findings. This study sought to clarify the impact of skipping lunch on cognitive ability and interoceptive awareness in college-aged students by including eating restraint as a moderator. Participants were randomized to a ‘lunch’ condition (consuming a 638-calorie shake) or a ‘lunch omission’ condition (consuming a 48-calorie shake). Prior to shake consumption, participants completed demographic questionnaires and reported levels of affect, satiety and fatigue. After a controlled wait period of two hours, participants completed a neuropsychology battery, which assessed short-term memory , long-term memory, working memory, attention, processing speed, set shifting, eating disorder symptomology, depression, and anxiety. Results revealed that participants in the lunch condition had better short-term memory performance relative to participants in the lunch omission condition. No differences were found between groups for long-term memory, working memory, attention, or processing speed. Regressing set shifting speed on the manipulation, eating restraint scores, and their interaction revealed a trending interaction term: Individuals in the no-lunch condition had faster set shifting speed than individuals in the lunch-condition, but only for those with lower levels of eating restraint. Lastly, regressing change in satiety on the manipulation, eating restraint scores, and their interaction, revealed a significant interaction term: Individuals in the lunch condition reported higher satiety than individuals in the no lunch-condition, but only for those with lower levels of eating restraint. There was no evidence to support differences in affect or fatigue between conditions. ▼ ABSTRACT PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR EMERGING ADULTS WITH SUBCLINICAL ADHD by OLIVIA A. McGARRAGLE May 2013 Advisor: Dr. Stephen Hillman Major: Educational Psychology Degree: Doctor of Philosophy This study investigated the understudied and significant problem of subclinical ADHD in emerging adult college students. Limited literature had estimated a significant prevalence of 10-15% in this age group (Bussing et al., 2010). Studies have established that although individuals with subclinical ADHD do not meet full DSM-IV criteria for ADHD, they experience significant academic impairment nonetheless (Kats-Gold, Besser & Priel, 2007). ADHD experts have demonstrated that subclinical ADHD individuals need to be identified in order to provide the appropriate academic accommodation (Bussing et al., 2010; Du Paul et al., 2009; Norwalk, Norvilitis & MacLean, 2009). This study used the online survey service survey monkey and a large sample of college students to learn about the relationship between subclinical ADHD and academic performance. Potential protective factors: interpersonal skills, history of a mentor, and study skills were investigated as moderators of this relationship. 200 college students participated in this study; 100 qualified as having subclinical ADHD, the other 100 were nonclinical. Students completed self report questionnaires online measuring ADHD symptoms, interpersonal skills, presence of a mentor, demographic information, and their cumulative and course grade point averages (GPA). Subclinical ADHD students were found to have lower achievement. A negative relationship between level of subclinical ADHD symptoms and GPA was demonstrated. Subclinical ADHD students were shown to possess study skills deficits: certain sub skills in particular. Importantly, subclinical ADHD was shown to significantly predict GPA. Study skills, self-efficacy for learning in particular predicted GPA accounting for 11% variance. Finally, this study built a relational model between subclinical ADHD and GPA in emerging adults by demonstrating that study skills moderated this relationship, and therefore, served as a protective factor for at-risk subclinical ADHD college students. ▼ C-reactive protein (CRP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. In addition to traditional risk factors of CVD, some studies have shown that depression and anger independently predict CRP, but other studies have found null results, and few, if any, studies have considered possible roles of physical activity and diet. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of certain psychosocial variables to predict CRP controlling for traditional CVD risk factors. Cross-sectional data for 300 healthy women who participated in the Stockholm Female Coronary Risk Study were analyzed. Regression analyses were performed to determine whether anger, depression, social support, marital stress, and self-esteem were associated with CRP levels while controlling for relevant covariates. Analyses investigated possible mediating effects of certain aspects of diet and physical activity and whether body composition (measured by waist circumference) and fasting glucose moderates the relationship between psychosocial variables and CRP. We found that anger symptoms were negatively associated with CRP and anger discussion was positively associated with CRP controlling for several biological variables. Diet and physical activity did not explain the relationship between these anger variables and CRP. Social support in the forms of social attachment and social integration were positively associated with CRP among women with a larger waist circumference and higher fasting glucose, respectively. Marital stress was positively related to CRP among women with a larger waist circumference. Among women with a smaller waist circumference, marital stress was negatively related to CRP and social integration was positively related to CRP. These findings suggest that having a large waist in addition to less social support and more marital stress is disadvantageous with regard to CRP. Адаптивна успешност представља субдимензију концепта радне успешности. Овај бихејвиорални феномен у жижи је научног интересовања скоро пуне две деценије, а важност испитивања наведеног феномена је несумњива узимајући у обзир чињеницу да радна средина и околности у којима индивидуа функционише постају све комплекснији, динамичнији и захтевнији. С тим у вези, и у области војне психологије приметна је тенденција да је потребно редефинисати захтеве официрског позива, а што пре свега подразумева укључивање елемената адаптабилности, и наставити са испитивањем људског понашања у екстремним, стално промењивим и динамичним срединским условима. Упркос бројним истраживачким интересовањима, поједини аутори критикују досадашњу операционализацију индивидуалне адаптивне успешности и сматрају да даља истраживања морају да „доведу у ред“ начин на који се овај феномен употребљава у истраживачке сврхе. С тим у вези, пошто не постоји општеприхваћена операционализација концепта адаптивне успешности, једна од идеја овог рада била је усмерена на утврђивање унутрашње (латентне) структуре адаптивне успешности. Такође, рад је имао као циљ и да утврди природу везе индивидуалне адаптивне успешности и других концепата за које се може претпоставити да су детерминанте или исходне варијабле у односу на адаптивну успешност у ратном окружењу. С тим у вези, у складу са досадашњим истраживачким налазима, претпоставило се да одређене димензије личности HEXACO модела, као што су емоционалност, савесност и отвореност, и засебна димензија личности - дезинтеграција, као и одређене ситуационе варијабле, и то изложеност ратним стресорима и потресеност доживљеним стресорима, могу имати статус детерминанте адаптивне успешности. Као неповољне исходне варијабле индивидуалне адаптивне успешности у ратном окружењу претпостављене су варијабле „степен изражености симптома посттрауматског стресног поремећаја“ и „степен изражености других неповољних последица изложености ратним стресорима“...

▼ To effectively meet students’ needs, educational reform in science calls for adaptive instruction based on students’ thinking. To gain an understanding of what students know, a teacher needs to attend to, probe, and analyze student thinking to provide information to base curricular decisions, upon. These three components make up the skill of noticing. Learning to notice is not easy for any teacher, but is especially difficult for preservice teachers, who lack the experience these skills require. Additionally they lack the professional knowledge needed to inform responses. The purpose of this study was to discover how a combination of scaffolds: video-based reflection on practice, a professional learning community, and a content specific moderator as a guide can be embedded into a methods course to support preservice teachers’ learning to professionally notice elementary students’ scientific thinking in order to provide a responsive curriculum. The study was designed on the premise that the skill of professional noticing is critical for preservice teachers to acquire the knowledge and ability to develop their personal PCK and topic specific professional knowledge. It was situated in a methods course as this is the structure provided within teacher education programs to tie theory to practice. This qualitative case study, studied one section of an elementary science methods course during teaching of their science unit. In general participants’ skills progressed from noticing the class as a whole to attending to specific students’ thinking and from a focus on evaluation to interpretation. By the end they were connecting teaching strategies to student thinking. How participants’ responded to what they had noticed progressed as well, moving from frontloading information to creating additional constructivist based learning experiences when encountering student confusion demonstrating growth in their professional knowledge as well as their noticing skills. They attributed certain aspects of their growth to different parts the intervention, for instance learning to probe thinking to video, learning to construct learning experiences to the content specific moderator, and learning to decide next steps to the professional learning community. This study points to the efficacy of employing these scaffolds, found useful in other contexts, within science education. Advisors/Committee Members: Park Rogers, Meredith (advisor).

Brottsbrytet har sedan år 2018 genomgått en del förändringar, bland annat gått från att vara ett teoribaserat- till att bli ett modulbaserat program. Forskning har sedan förändringen inte genomförts varken kring effekten eller genomförandet vilket gjorde ämnet aktuellt att studera. Syftet med studien var därför att studera programledares uppfattning om behandlingsprogrammet Brottsbrytet i Sverige. Den aktuella studien har utgått från en tvärsnittsdesign med en kvalitativ ansats i form av semistrukturerade telefonintervjuer. Det aktuella urvalet var 20 anstalter som enligt uppgifter bedriver Brottsbrytet och tillfrågades att medverka i den aktuella studien. Av alla tillfrågade blev resultatet sex intervjuer hänvisat från sex olika anstalter. Studien visade en övergripande positiv inställning till programmet. De gemensamma riktlinjerna används genom manualen på ett flexibelt sätt, vilket innebär att riktlinjerna följs tills viss del då även andra komponenter i utgångspunkterna används. Utbildning och erfarenhet är av betydelse av processens effektivitet och det används även hos programledare för Brottsbrytet i Sverige idag. Det har framkommit en del brister och problem med behandlingsprogrammet som kan påverka genomförandet och effekten. Brottsbrytet kan utifrån denna studies resultat behöva en längre behandlingsprocess där exempelvis vidmakthållande kan vara aktuellt.

Brottsbrytet has been going through some changes since 2018, including going from being a theory-based program to becoming a module-based program. Since the change, not much research has been done either on the effectiveness or on the implementation of the treatment program, which made the subject relevant to study. The purpose of the study was therefore to study the moderator's perception of the treatment program Brottsbrytet in Sweden. The current study is based on a cross-sectional design with a qualitative approach and is using semi-structured telephone interviews. The sample was 20 institutions that, according to information, are working with Brottsbrytet and were asked to participate in the current study. Of all people who were asked to participate, the results were six interviews from six different institutions. This study showed an overall positive attitude towards the specific program. The common guidelines are used in a flexible way, which means that the manual is followed partly and other components in the starting points are also used. Education and experience are important for the effect of the process and that is used by moderator's of Brottsbrytet in Sweden today. The result shows that there exist some problems with the treatment program according to the moderators that can affect the implementation and the effect of the program. Brottsbrytet may, based on the results of this study, need a longer treatment process where for example enforcement may be relevant.

▼ Emotional intelligence (EI) is about a person’s ability to deal with emotions. It is assumed that employees with high EI may experience high well-being at work. However, empirical findings are somewhat mixed. While some studies have identified a significant relationship between EI and well-being, others have not found such relationship. Considering these inconclusive findings, this study focusses on two personal factors - Positive Affectivity (PA) and Individualism - and examines how they may moderate the effect of EI on work well-being. Based on the assumption that EI only reflects a person’s effortful way of treating emotions, it is proposed that both PA and Individualism can activate and motivate the use of EI among employees, and therefore, can enhance its effect. The hypotheses were tested among a sample of 240 Chinese managers, following a cross-sectional design. EI was assessed by emotion understanding and regulation in the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test. Work well-being was operationalised by three self-rated scales: job satisfaction, stress, and burnout. PA and Individualism were also captured by self-reports. The study further included measures of Negative Affectivity and Collectivism for controlling and exploratory purposes. The research findings generally confirm the moderating effects of PA and Individualism on EI. Among employees with high PA or high Individualism, EI can contribute to them becoming more satisfied and less burnt out at work. It was also found that PA significantly enhanced the negative effect of EI (based on the US scoring) on job stress. However, the interaction between Individualism and EI did not have a significant effect on job stress. The main effect of EI was also not significant for the three well-being indicators, which suggested that EI, in the absence of salient motivators, may have little effect on well-being. These findings are discussed in detail, particularly with respect to their implications for methodology, theory and management practice.

▼ This thesis involved an examination of the impact of moderator variables on the extended technology acceptance model with the aim of developing a more integrative framework for understanding mobile broadband technology acceptance in Indonesia. The absence of an integrative model that incorporates other types of variables, such as moderator factors, in the current literature indicates the importance of developing such a framework. The research design of this thesis was based in part on a comprehensive literature review, followed by a pre-test, a pilot study and the main study, which yielded 704 responses. The study identified three main variables that potentially have a moderating influence on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). These are individual culture value orientation, customer perceived value (CPV) and demographic factors. Furthermore, the most recently developed model in the field, the TRAM (Technology Readiness and Acceptance Model), was also examined for its potential as a baseline model for testing the moderator variables. A comparison between the TRAM and the original TAM was conducted based on structural equation modelling (SEM) fit examination procedures, the results of which revealed that only the TAM part of the TRAM was valid for implementation in the present research. The high and low groups of CPV, individual cultural orientation and demographic data were used to develop unconstrained structural high and low data group models, a constrained model and a partially constrained model, to which chi-square difference tests were then applied. The results of these tests indicated whether the differences in the hypothesised relationships in the research model were significant across the groups. A significant result confirmed the influence of some of the moderator variables. These included the conservation and openness to change cultural orientations, which were measured based on Schwartzâ€™s Value System (SVS). Openness to change was proven to moderate two of the three relationships in TAM. It significantly moderated the relationships between perceived enjoyment (PE) and usage intention (UI) and between perceived ease of use (PEOU) and UI. The moderating influence of openness to change on the relationship between perceived usefulness (PU) and UI was found to be insignificant. An interesting finding was obtained by testing the moderating influence of conservatism. Although significant evidence was found to support that conservatism moderated the technology acceptance model overall, no significant results were identified confirming a moderating influence of openness to change on the PEâ€“UI, PUâ€“UI and PEOUâ€“UI relationships. A significant result was obtained for the relationship between PU and PE, where conservatism demonstrated a moderating influence.
