▼ In this thesis, we focus on two classes of multi-robot task allocation and deployment problems motivated by applications in ride-sourcing transportation networks and service robots: 1) coverage control with multiple robots, and 2) robots servicing tasks arriving sequentially over time. The first problem considers the deployment of multiple robots to cover a domain. The multi-robot problem consists of multiple robots with sensors on-board observing the spatially distributed events in an environment. The objective is to maximize the sensing quality of the events via optimally distributing the robots in the environment. This problem has been studied extensively in the literature and several algorithms have been proposed for different variants of this problem. However, there has been a lack of theoretical results on the quality of the solutions provided by these algorithms. In this thesis, we provide a new distributed multi-robot coverage algorithm with theoretical guarantees on the solution quality, run-time complexity, and communication complexity. The theoretical bound on the solution quality holds for on-board sensors where the sensing quality of the sensors is a sub-additive function of the distance to the event location in convex and non-convex environments. A natural extension of the multi-robot coverage control problem is considered in this thesis where each robot is equipped with a set of different sensors and observes different event types in the environment. Servicing a task in this problem corresponds to sensing an event occurring at a particular location and does not involve visiting the task location. Each event type has a different distribution over the domain. The robots are heterogeneous in that each robot is capable of sensing a subset of the event types. The objective is to deploy the robots into the domain to maximize the total coverage of the multiple event types. We propose a new formulation for the heterogeneous coverage problem. We provide a simple distributed algorithm to maximize the coverage. Then, we extend the result to the case where the event distribution is unknown before the deployment and provide a distributed algorithm and prove the convergence of the approach to a locally optimal solution. The third problem considers the deployment of a set of autonomous robots to efficiently service tasks that arrive sequentially in an environment over time. Each task is serviced when a robot visits the corresponding task location. Robots can then redeploy while waiting for the next task to arrive. The objective is to redeploy the robots taking into account the next N task arrivals. We seek to minimize a linear combination of the expected cost to service tasks and the redeployment cost between task arrivals. In the single robot case, we propose a one-stage greedy algorithm and prove its optimality. ▼ This dissertation aims at developing computationally tractable models and algorithms to increase the operational efficiency of the Mobility-on-Demand (MoD) ridesharing systems via three means: i) fast ride-vehicle matching; ii) proactive rebalancing; iii) request-level pricing strategies, and iv) framework to incorporate mode choice models. Mobility-on-Demand (MoD) services such as Uber and Lyft are disrupting urban mobility. Over the last few years, this disruption has led to much interest in studying the design, management and impacts of these systems. However, due to the large scale of the demand and fleet size, how to optimally assign the vehicles to trip requests and how to optimize the prices charged on riders in real time still remain as open problems. Studies usually solve the request-vehicle assignment task in two ways: i) greedy matching, in which a new coming request is matched to a request immediately; ii) batching matching, in which the requests are collected for a short time window (e.g. 30 seconds), and at the end of the time window the optimization problem is considered for the whole batch of requests. Batching matching can usually increase the matching efficiency since it can use the fleet better compared to the greedy matching. However, riders' waiting time can be prolonged due to the batching window, and damage the riders' experience. There is not a consensus on which method is better, and this dissertation discusses both frameworks and one can implement the methods and compare the performance via simulation. In addition, the research proposes speed-up techniques for the batching matching, which can reduce the computation time and increase the matching efficiency given a limited time window. MoD systems are generally designed and analyzed for a fixed and exogenous demand, but such frameworks fail to answer questions about the impact of these services on the urban transportation system, such as the effect of induced demand and the implications for transit ridership. In this dissertation, we propose a unified framework to design, optimize and analyze MoD operations within a multimodal transportation system where the demand for a travel mode is a function of its level of service. An application of Bayesian optimization (BO) to derive the optimal supply-side MoD parameters (e.g., fleet size) is also illustrated. The profit of the MoD companies and the balance between the supply and demand highly depend on the pricing strategies applied. Since the supply and demand volumes at different locations change continuously, dynamic pricing has been proven to be more robust and be helpful to relieve the Wild Goose Chase (WGC) phenomenon. However, the current dynamic pricing method is usually state-dependent. Specifically, given a location zone and its supply level at the moment, the system determines the price multiplier for this zone for the next time window. ▼ Connected Automated Vehicles (CAV) technologies are developing rapidly, and one of its more popular application is to provide mobility-on-demand (MOD) services. However, with CAVs on the road, the fuel consumption of surface transportation may increase significantly. Travel demands could increase due to more accessible travel provided by the flexible service compared with the current public transit system. Trips from current underserved population and mode shift from walking and public transit could also increase travel demands significantly. In this research, we explore opportunities for the fuel-saving of CAVs in an urban environment from different scales, including speed trajectory optimization at intersections, data-drive fuel consumption model and eco-routing algorithm development, and eco-MOD fleet assignment. First, we proposed a speed trajectory optimization algorithm at signalized intersections. Although the optimal solution can be found through dynamic programming, the curse of dimensionality limits its computation speed and robustness. Thus, we propose the sequential approximation approach to solve a sequence of mixed integer optimization problems with quadratic objective and linear constraints. The speed and acceleration constraints at intersections due to route choice are addressed using a barrier method. In this work, we limit the problem to a single intersection due to the route choice application and only consider free flow scenarios, but the algorithm can be extended to multiple intersections and congested scenarios where a leading vehicle is included as a constraint if an intersection driver model is available. Next, we developed a fuel consumption model for route optimization. The mesoscopic fuel consumption model is developed through a data-driven approach considering the tradeoff between model complexity and accuracy. To develop the model, a large quantity of naturalistic driving data is used. Since the selected dataset doesn’t contain fuel consumption data, a microscopic fuel consumption simulator, Autonomie, is used to augment the information. Gaussian Mixture Regression is selected to build the model due to its ability to address nonlinearity. Instead of selected component number by cross-validation, we use the Bayesian formulation which models the indicator of components as a random variable which has Dirichlet distribution as prior. The model is used to estimate fuel consumption cost for routing algorithm. In this part, we assume the traffic network is static. Finally, the fuel consumption model and the eco-routing algorithm are integrated with the MOD fleet assignment. The MOD control framework models customers’ travel time requirements are as constraints, thus provides flexibility for cost function design. At the current phase, we assume the traffic network is static and use offline calculated travel time and fuel consumption to assign the fleet. ▼ Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) benefit from both connectivity between vehicles and city infrastructures and automation of vehicles. In this respect, CAVs can improve safety and reduce traffic congestion and environmental impacts of daily commutes through making collaborative decisions. This dissertation studies how to reduce the energy consumption of vehicles and traffic congestion by making high-level routing decisions of CAVs. The first half of this dissertation considers the problem of eco-routing (finding the energy-optimal route) for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) to minimize the overall energy consumption cost. Several algorithms are proposed that can simultaneously calculate an energy-optimal route (eco-route) for a PHEV and an optimal power-train control strategy over this route. The results show significant energy savings for PHEVs with a near real-time execution time for the algorithms. The second half of this dissertation tackles the problem of routing for fleets of CAVs in the presence of mixed traffic (coexistence of regular vehicles and CAVs). In this setting, all CAVs belong to the same fleet and can be routed using a centralized controller. The routing objective is to minimize a given overall fleet traveling cost (travel time or energy consumption). It is assumed that regular vehicles (non-CAVs) choose their routing decisions selfishly to minimize their traveling time. A framework is proposed that deals with the routing interaction between CAVs and regular uncontrolled vehicles under different penetration rates (fractions) of CAVs. The results suggest collaborative routing decisions of CAVs improve not only the cost of CAVs but also that of the non-CAVs. This framework is further extended to consider congestion-aware route-planning policies for Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand (AMoD) systems, whereby a fleet of autonomous vehicles provides on-demand mobility under mixed traffic conditions. A network flow model is devised to optimize the AMoD routing and rebalancing strategies in a congestion-aware fashion by accounting for the endogenous impact of AMoD flows on travel time. The results suggest that for high levels of demand, pure AMoD travel can be detrimental due to the additional traffic stemming from its rebalancing flows, while the combination of AMoD with walking or micromobility options can significantly improve the overall system performance. Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoitus on tehdä tarvekartoitus Vivo Warriorsin digitaaliselle hyvinvointipalvelulle ja selvittää kuinka suuri tarve palvelulle on hotellialalla. Opinnäytetyö keskittyy havaitsemaan ne tekijät, jotka sekä tukevat, että vastustavat palvelun käyttöönottoa. Tavoitteena on selvittää tarpeen laajuus ja luoda kehitysehdotuksia toimeksiantajalle. Koska kyseessä on start-up -yritys, pelkästään kyseisen alan toteaminen epäkannattavaksi markkina-alueeksi on yritystä helpottava asia. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin teemahaastattelua, joka muodostui kolmen teeman ympärille. Nämä teemat olivat on-demand -palvelut, hyvinvointipalvelut ja rekrytoiminen. Haastatteluun osallistui neljä hotellinjohtajaa ja kaksi vuoropäällikköä viidestä Pirkanmaalla sijaitsevasta hotellista. Tarvekartoitusta tehtäessä tärkeää on havaita ne seikat, missä yrityksellä (tässä tapauksessa hotellilla) on ongelmia. Näiden seikkojen havaitsemisen avulla on mahdollista miettiä, miten toimeksiantajan palvelu voisi auttaa heitä, tai miten palvelua pitäisi kehittää, jotta se olisi houkutteleva asiakkaalle. Nämä asiat saatiin haastatteluiden avulla selvästi kartoitettua. Opinnäytetyön tutkimusosassa korostui selkeästi palvelun tarpeettomuus keskustan alueella sijaitsevissa hotelleissa. Paljon liikematkailijoita puoleensa vetävät hotellit ovat lähellä palveluita, mikä tekee vieraista erittäin itseohjautuvia. Lisäksi mainittiin lukuisat yhteistyökumppanit, jotka järjestävät hyvinvointipalveluita hotellivieraille. Nämä seikat tekevät toimeksiantajan palvelusta vähemmän puoleensavetävämmän hotellien näkökulmasta. Palvelun käyttöönottoa tukivat esimerkiksi yhteistyökumppanien rajalliset aukioloajat ja hyvinvointipalveluiden suuri kysyntä.

The aim of this thesis was to carry out a needs assessment of Vivo Warriors’ digital wellness service and to find out how big the need for this service is in the hotel business. The thesis focused on detecting the factors that both support and oppose the introduction of the service. The aim was to find out the extent of the need and to provide the commissioner with suggestions for development. Since Vivo Warriors is a start-up business, the mere fact of finding the industry in question to be unprofitable is an attempt to ease the business. The research method in the thesis was a theme interview, that was built around three themes. These themes were on-demand services, wellness services and recruiting. The interview was attended by four hotel managers and two shift managers from five hotels in Pirkanmaa. When it comes to assessing needs, it is important to find out where the company (in this case the hotel) has problems. By detecting these facts, it is possible to consider how the commissioner’s service could help the hotels or how the service should be developed to make it attractive to the customer. These matters were clearly mapped through the interviews. The empirical part of the thesis highlighted that Vivo Warriors’ service for the hotels in the city center is unnecessary. Many hotels…

▼ Privately owned cars are an unsustainable mode of transportation, especially in cities. New Mobility on Demand (MoD) services should offer a convenient and sustainable alternative to privately owned cars. Notable in this field is the recent uprise of ride-sharing services such as offered by companies like Uber and Grab. Such services, especially when allowing for multiple passengers to share a vehicle, could potentially be a valuable addition to existing modes of transport to offer fast and sustainable door-to-door transportation. The optimisation of vehicle routes for a MoD fleet is a complex task, especially when allowing for multiple passengers to share a vehicle. Recent studies have presented algorithms that can optimise routes in real-time for large scale ride-sharing systems, but have left opportunities to further enhance fleet performance. The redistribution of idle vehicles towards areas of high demand and the utilisation of high capacity vehicles in a heterogeneous fleet has received little attention. This work presents a method to continuously redistribute idle vehicles towards areas of expected demand and an analysis of fleets with both buses and regular vehicles. Furthermore, a method is proposed to optimise vehicle routes while taking into account vehicle capacities and the future locations of vehicles in anticipation to predicted demand. In simulations with historical taxi data of Manhattan, 99.8% of transportation requests can be served with a fleet of 3000 vehicles with an average waiting time of 57.4 seconds, and an average in-car delay of 13.7 seconds. Compared to earlier work, a decrease in walk-aways of 95% is obtained for 3000 vehicles, with a 86% decrease in average in-car delay and a 37% decrease in average waiting time. For a small fleet of 1000 small busses of capacity 8 still 84.6% of requests can be served with an average waiting time of 141 seconds and an average in-car delay of 269 seconds. In comparison to prior work, a decrease in walk-aways of 15% is obtained, with a 14% decrease in average in-car delay and a 2% decrease in average waiting time. A heterogeneous fleet of 1000 vehicles consisting of 500 buses and 500 regular vehicles using this new approach can serve approximately the same number of passengers as a homogeneous fleet of 1000 buses using earlier presented algorithms. ▼ As drop-on-demand (DOD) applications continue to gain ground in desktop inkjet-printing, 3D printing, fluid mixing, and other areas the demand for higher frequency operations are beginning to push against the current physical boundaries in DOD technology. The current research is exploring the possibility of controlling drop volume and velocity at high frequency ranges where meniscus vibrations can occur between drop formations and affect drop formation characteristics. A periodic voltage is applied to a piezoelectric disk in order to generate pressure fluctuations in a single nozzle droplet generator, causing the fluid meniscus at the nozzle to vibrate. A single stronger pulse is then superimposed over the periodic waveform at different phases in order to drive drop ejection. The characteristics of the resulting drop, specifically the volume and velocity, are experimentally measured using a high speed camera with precise timing control. The results of these experiments are then compared to a lumped element model (LEM) developed for the droplet generator geometry used. Within the LEM model framework, special attention was given to the definition of a novel method by which one can measure drop volume within an electroacoustic circuit and also allow meniscus dynamics to affect present and future drop formations. Experimental results indicate a strong dependence of both drop volume and drop velocity on the phase of the vibrating meniscus at the start of drop formation. Positive meniscus displacements and momentums resulted in large drop volumes and velocities while negative displacements could reduce drop volume or altogether eliminate drop formation. Specifically, positive displacements and momentum of a vibrating meniscus could lead to drop volumes approximately 50% larger than the original drop volume without a vibrating meniscus. Meanwhile, negative meniscus displacements and momentums were shown to have the ability to completely prevent drop formation. Additional potential for drop characteristic control with a vibrating meniscus is discussed alongside observations on the stabilizing affect the vibrating meniscus appears to have on drop velocity as a function of time. Also, flow visualization of the drop formation is provided to demonstrate the added affect the meniscus vibrations have on the drop shapes and break-off profiles. The LEM model presented demonstrates qualitative agreement with the experimental model, but fails to quantitatively predict drop volumes. ▼ In recent years, energy harvesting has been generating great interests among researchers, scientists and engineers alike. One of the major reasons for this increased interest sterns from the desire to have autonomous perpetual power supplies for remote monitoring sensor nodes utilizing some of the already available and otherwise wasted energy in the environment in a very innovative and useful way (and at the same time, maintaining a green environment). Scientists and engineers are constantly looking for ways of obtaining continuous and uninterrupted data from several points of interests especially remote or dangerous locations, using sensors coupled with RF transceivers, without the need of ever replacing or recharging the batteries that power these devices. This is now made possible through energy harvesting technologies which serve as suitable power supply substitutes, in many cases, for low power devices. With the proliferation of wireless energy in the environment through different radio frequency bands as well as natural sources like solar, wind and heat energy, it has become a desirable thing to take advantage of their availability by harvesting and converting them to useful electrical energy forms. The energy so harnessed or harvested could then be utilized in sensor nodes. Now, since these energy sources fluctuate from time to time, and from place to place, there is the need to have a form of energy accumulation, conversion, conditioning and storage. The stored energy would then be reconverted and used by the sensors nodes and/or RF transceivers when needed. The process through which this is done is referred to as energy management. In this research work, many types of energy harvesting transducers were explored including – solar, thermal, electromagnetic and piezo/vibration. A proof of concept approach for an on-demand electromagnetic power generator is then presented towards the end. While most, if not all, of the energy harvesting techniques discussed needed some time to accumulate enough charge to operate their respective systems, the on-demand energy harvester makes energy available as at and when needed. In summary, a system level design is presented with suggested future research works.

▼ The recent advancement in information technologies has facilitated the emergence and growth of travel modes like ride-sourcing, car-sharing, and bike-sharing, providing travelers with unprecedentedly broad travel options. The nature of these options will significantly affect the way how people travel and engage in activities, and therefore lead to transport network impacts. Ride-sourcing, referring to app-based on-demand ride service (ODRS), exhibits similar traits of traditional taxis but provides better real-time information and lowered cost compared to taxis. The fast growth of ride-sourcing also reflects the trend known as Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and can be seen as a litmus test of connected and autonomous vehicles which will further transform the transportation landscape. This dissertation explores three main aspects of ODRS using a three-part analysis: an exploratory analysis of the role of ODRS in urban transportation, a discrete choice modeling to understand the choice of ODRS, and scenario forecasting to quantify the potential impact of ODRS on transport accessibility and equity. The dissertation results indicate the critical role that ODRS has in serving transport-disadvantaged population and multimodal travel and filling in gaps of transit, identify the socio-demographic, built environment, and trip characteristics associated with the choice of ODRS, and reveal the substantial accessibility and equity benefits of integrating ODRS with transit. The dissertation also shows strong performance of machine learning travel mode choices and suggests the further integration of machine learning with travel demand forecasting. The findings unveil the potentials of ODRS in elevating transport benefits of the existing infrastructure and point to strategies of leveraging ODRS and autonomous vehicles to improve transport mobility, accessibility, and equity. The results also reveal challenges of realizing the benefits of ODRS and incorporating ODRS into travel demand forecasting, which will have to rely on data collection, public-private collaboration, and research and practical exploration of synergizing ODRS with other travel modes. ▼ Video streaming has recently grown dramatically in popularity over the Internet, Cable TV, and wire-less networks. Because of the resource demanding nature of video streaming applications, maximizing resource utilization in any video streaming system is a key factor to increase the scalability and decrease the cost of the system. Resources to utilize include server bandwidth, network bandwidth, battery life in battery operated devices, and processing time in limited processing power devices. In this work, we propose new techniques to maximize the utilization of video-on-demand (VOD) server resources. In addition to that, we propose new framework to maximize the utilization of the network bandwidth in wireless video streaming systems. Providing video streaming users in a VOD system with expected waiting times enhances their perceived quality-of-service (QoS) and encourages them to wait thereby increasing server utilization by increasing server throughput. In this work, we analyze waiting-time predictability in scalable video streaming. We also propose two prediction schemes and study their effectiveness when applied with various stream merging techniques and scheduling policies. The results demonstrate that the waiting time can be predicted accurately, especially when enhanced cost-based scheduling is applied. The combination of waiting-time prediction and cost-based scheduling leads to outstanding performance benefits. The achieved resource sharing by stream merging depends greatly on how the waiting requests are scheduled for service. Motivated by the development of cost-based scheduling, we investigate its effectiveness in great detail and discuss opportunities for further tunings and enhancements. Additionally, we analyze the effectiveness of incorporating video prediction results into the scheduling decisions. We also study the interaction between scheduling policies and the stream merging techniques and explore new ways for enhancements. The interest in video surveillance systems has grown dramatically during the last decade. Auto-mated video surveillance (AVS) serves as an efficient approach for the realtime detection of threats and for monitoring their progress. Wireless networks in AVS systems have limited available bandwidth that have to be estimated accurately and distributed efficiently. In this research, we develop two cross-layer optimization frameworks that maximize the bandwidth optimization of 802.11 wireless network. We develop a distortion-based cross-layer optimization framework that manages bandwidth in the wire-less network in such a way that minimizes the overall distortion. We also develop an accuracy-based cross-layer optimization framework in which the overall detection accuracy of the computer vision algorithm(s) running in the system is maximized. ▼ The past decade has witnessed the fast development of peer-assisted video ondemand (PA-VoD) systems, which have attracted millions of online users. The efforts on improving the quality of video programs have never ceased since the beginning, and nowadays offering high-definition (HD) channels has become a common practice. However, compared with standard-definition (SD) channels, HD channels have to sustain a higher streaming rate to peers, which is a challenging task. In real systems, HD channels often suffer from poor streaming quality, or impose a heavy burden on the servers. This thesis conducts an in-depth study on peer cache and upload bandwidth management at the same time for multi-channel PA-VoD systems, where HD and SD channels coexist with different bandwidth and cache requirements. The objective is to minimize the server bandwidth consumption, and thus the maintenance cost of VoD service providers. The solution is cross-channel allocation (or view-upload decoupling), i.e., making SD channels help HD viewers with the surplus peer-contributed resources. The management of these resources includes bandwidth allocation and caching strategies. We first propose a generic modeling framework to capture the essential characteristics of PA-VoD systems: the demand and supply of bandwidth from peers. Our modeling framework can be customized or extended to model a variety of caching strategies, including FIFO, passive caching, and active caching with different user behaviors. We then apply the modeling framework to two representative scenarios: stationary scenarios, where the channels have fixed popularity; and non-stationary scenarios, in which a new movie is released, and peers enter the channel in a flash-crowd manner. We prove using our models that passive caching is efficient for stationary user behaviors, and derive the optimal caching solutions when the channels in the system demonstrate different popularity evolutions, i.e., with non-stationary behaviors. With the insights gained from our modeling work, we design effective centralized heuristic algorithms and practical distributed strategies for peer cache replacement and upload bandwidth allocation, with a near-optimal utilization of these resources. We propose centralized and distributed cross-channel allocation, and also extend the substreaming technique from live streaming to VoD systems, where it demonstrates its extreme feasibility.
