▼ This study comprises a petrographical and mineralogical investigation of rocks from an area 850 sq. km in size, situated about 80km northeast of Middelburg. Roughly half of the area is occupied by rocks of the epicrustal phase of the Bushveld Complex, and consists largely of Rooiberg Felsite and granophyre as well as leptite, microgranite and granodiorite. Numerous veins of finegrained granite traverse the leptite which is considered to be highly metamorphosed felsite. These veins of fine-grained granite probably owe their origin to the melting of the leptite. The coalescence of these products of melting gave rise to the thick sheet of.granophyre between the leptite and the felsite. Rocks of the Layered Sequence occupy the eastern half of the area and consist of the Main and Upper Zones which were subdivided into various subzones on the basis of characteristic rock types and marker horizons. Mineralogical investigations are restricted to the minerals from rocks of the Layered Sequence, namely orthopyroxene, plagioclase, apatite and the sulphides of the Upper Zone. In Subzone A of the Main Zone, the orthopyroxene is present as cumulus crystals, but it changes in texture to ophitic in the lower half of Subzone B where small discrete grains of inverted pigeonite are also developed. Inverted pigeonite is present in the upper half of Subzone B and in rocks of the Upper Zone, whereas the orthopyroxene-pigeonite relationships in Subzone C of the Main Zone are a repetition of those observed in the underlying rocks. The phase-change from orthopyroxene to pigeonite takes place over a transition zone in which both phases crystallized from the magma. It is envisaged that the first pigeonite to have crystallized from the magma at high temperatures had a lower Fe/Mg ratio than the hypersthene precipitating at slightly lower temperatures, with the result that the early formed pigeonite was unstable and reacted with the magma to form hypersthene. This caused the formation of groups of grains of hypersthene which are optically continuous over large areas and which may contain a few blebs of augite exsolved from the original pigeonite. A few pigeonite grains were effectively trapped in other minerals, mostly augite, and consequently escaped reaction with the liquid. These inverted to hypersthene at the appropriate temperature and contain numerous exsolution-lamellae of augite. As fractional crystallization of the magma continued, it moved further into the stability field of pigeonite and out of the stability field of hypersthene with the result that the formation of hypersthene by the reaction of pigeonite with magma was replaced by inversion of pigeonite to hypersthene. This inverted pigeonite is also present as groups of grains optically continuous and contains pre-inversion exsolution-lamellae of augite orientated at random, and post-inversion exsolution-lamellae which are orientated parallel to the (100) plane of the orthopyroxene throughout a unit. En Afrique du Sud, le supergroupe Pongola s’est déposé sur le craton du Kaapvaal à environ 3 milliards d’années. Le groupe Mozaan repose sur le groupe basal Nsuze et contient des pélites, des arénites quartziques, des grès et des conglomérats. Dans ce type de conglomérat, des gisements d’uranium et des minéralisations d’or ont été reconnus dans le monde, au Canada, au Brésil, en Australie et en Afrique du Sud. Des petites minéralisations ont été avérées dans le groupe Mozaan, très différentes de celles qui ont été exploitées dans le bassin voisin du Witwatersrand. Ce travail pétrographique, minéralogique et géochimique concerne les formations conglomératiques et gréseuses basales du Mozaan Group dans le Denny Dalton. Il est fondé sur l’étude de deux carottes dans lesquelles des minéralisations en uranium ont été reconnues. Une attention particulière a été portée sur le matériel détritique car, dans ces conglomérats, les gisements sont de type placer avec des remobilisations plus ou moins marquées. Les grains détritiques identifiés associés à la pyrite détritique, sont la monazite fréquente, les oxydes de titane, les minéraux d’uranium thorium (coffinite, thorite, thorianite), le zircon, l’apatite, la chromite ainsi que d’autres sulfures (chalcopyrite, arsénopyrite). La roche source est vraisemblablement de matériel acide avec un faible apport basique ainsi que métamorphique. La morphologie des minéraux suggère un transport court de la source vers le bassin de Pongola. Les analyses pétrographiques et chimiques mettent en évidence les différentes minéralisations qui caractérisent les processus diagénétiques et hydrothermaux qui ont affecté le groupe Mozaan. Des observations nouvelles ont été réalisées sur les minéraux d’uranium avec la mise en évidence de phospho-coffinite, de phosphates alumineux hydratés de terres rares et des altérations très développées qui affectent les grains de monazite. In South Africa, the Pongola Supergroup was deposited on the craton Kaapvaal about 3 Ga years. The Mozaan group based on the basal Nsuze group and contains mudstones, arenites, sandstones and conglomerates. ▼ The Coed-y-Brenin system is a diorite-hosted porphyry copper deposit of early Ordovician age (Tremadoc) situated on the south eastern side of the Harlech Dome: a thick sequence of Cambrian and Ordovician sediments and volcaniclastics that were subject to greenschist facies metamorphism during the Caledonian Orogeny. The copper mineralization occurs as disseminations, coatings on hairline fractures and in late-stage quartz-sulphide-calcite veinlets. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are the main opaque phases but sulphosalts, tellurides and electrum are also present. The copper mineralization is largely confined to the diorite and micro-tonalite dykes and sills associated with the Rhobell Fawr Volcanic centre. This study has shown that epithermal style precious-metal mineralization is also developed in the Coed-y-Brenin area in the shales and siltstones of the Maentwrog and Ffestiniog Flags Formations. It is characterised by pyritization, sericitization and silicification. The gold and silver occur as electrum in fractures and also as tellurides in late stage quartz-pyrite veins. Both styles of mineralization share a close spatial association and are characterised by propylitic and phyllic alteration. Argillic and potassic assemblages are not developed. Geochemical analysis of mineralized and unmineralized material has shown that the diorite-hosted mineralization is enriched in Cu, Au and Ag and depleted in Zn while the epithermal mineralization displays enrichments in Au, Ag, As, Sb and the base metals. Rb:Sr ratios increase with increasing alteration in both styles of mineralization. Sulphur isotope studies have shown that both styles of mineralization have a common, probably magmatic, sulphur source. Fluid inclusion data and 0 and H isotope studies indicate that following magma emplacement and development of the porphyry copper mineralization a low temperature-low salinity meteoric hydrothermal system was established. This was responsible for the late-stage quartzsulphide-calcite veins in the diorites and for all the sediment-hosted mineralization. The association between epithennal and porphyry deposits has become apparent in recent years but the Coed-y-Brenin system is unusual due to its Lower Palaeozoic age and because both styles of mineralization are developed at the same structural level. This study of the Coed-y-Brenin porphyry system demonstrates the potential for the development and preservation of epithermal mineralization in porphyry systems and also in older orogenic belts.

▼ The world-class Cripple Creek gold telluride deposit in central Colorado is centered on an Oligocene alkaline-magmatic system composed of diatremal Breccia that is intruded by dikes and sills that range in composition from phonolite to lamprophyre. The deposit has historic production of >24 Moz of gold, making it the third most productive gold deposit in the United States. Most of this production came from underground mining operations that started with the discovery of the deposit in 1891, and continued until the early 1960's. The discovery of broad low-grade, bulk tonnage deposits in the 1980's led to renewed mining in the form of open pit operations, which remain active on a large scale. Two styles of mineralization are therefore recognized within the deposit: high-grade gold telluride veins that were historically mined underground, and low-grade bulk tonnage "disseminated" gold that is targeted by current pit mining operations. Geological study of the deposit began shortly after its discovery, and has continued through the present day. Much of this research has focused on describing and analyzing the alkaline rock suite that hosts mineralized ore bodies, and describing the ore bodies themselves. More recently there has been extensive work in describing the magmatic and hydrothermal evolution of the deposit. This work also revealed that gold-bearing As-rich pyrite exists within some ore zones. Through multiple studies, several different models have been proposed for the mineralizing history of the deposit, and many of the previously published paragenetic sequences that describe the relationship of different ore, gangue, and alteration minerals are contradictory. Conflicting parageneses and deposit models indicate that revision is needed in order to better understand how the Cripple Creek deposit became mineralized. This thesis aims to address some of the existing discrepancies, with focus on refining the paragenetic sequence of mineralization and developing a new model that describes the mineralogical evolution of the deposit. In addition, this thesis explores the nature of gold-bearing As-rich pyrite as sampled from different regions within the deposit. This thesis presents information derived from detailed mineralogical characterization of ore, gangue, and associated alteration minerals from five sampling locations. Samples that were analyzed in this study preserve evidence of seven distinct mineralizing stages. Na região leste do RS, porção sul da Bacia do Paraná, ocorre uma unidade do Jurássico Superior denominada de Arenito Pedreira. Para definir as relações estratigráficas e caracterizar esta unidade foram avaliados dois furos de sondagem para pesquisa de carvão, situados na região de Osório. Foram coletadas amostras representativas para análise petrográfica e contagem modal dos minerais constituintes para definição da proveniência dos sedimentos. Esta unidade está depositada entre à Formação Botucatu por desconformidade sobreposta e a Formação Rio do Rastro, com a qual tem contato erosivo. O Arenito Pedreira é composto por uma sucessão de ciclos granodecrescentes constituídos por arcóseos líticos e conglomerados arcoseanos clasto-suportados e polimíticos com grânulos e seixos subangulosos de varias litologias, que sucedem para pacotes de arenitos médios a grossos com estratificação cruzada tangencial e de baixo ângulo, finalizando em arcóseos com marcas de ondas e pelitos laminados no topo. Os litoclastos analisados representam rochas metamórficas de alto e baixo grau, granitoides, rochas sedimentares e vulcânicas básicas. As feições diagenéticas observadas caracterizam condições de eodiagenese e mesodiagenese, indicando ukm ambiente de clima continental seco. Os litoclastos descritos representam fontes associadas a um arco magmático dissecado e mostram características petrográficas semelhantes aquelas encontradas em rochas do Terreno Tijucas e do Batólito Pelotas, do Cinturão Dom Feliciano no RS. Estes dados sugerem uma área fonte próxima a área de deposição. A porção norte da estrutura soerguida do Arco de Rio Grande de direção NW-SE, representa a área fonte dos sedimentos que constituíram o Arenito Pedreira.

In the eastern part of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southern portion of the Paraná Basin, there is a Upper Jurassic unit informally called Pedreira Arenite. In define the stratigraphic relations and to characterize this unit, a description of the two drilling holes associated to coal research work situated in the Osório region. It was collected representative samples to petrographic analysis and the modal count of the constituent minerals was carried out to define the provenance and origin of the sediments. This unit is deposited under Botucatu Formation by to unconformity and over Rio do Rastro Formation, with which it has erosive contact. The Pedreira Arenite is composed of a succession of granodecrescent cycles consisting of lithic arkoses and conglomerate sandstones, clast-supported and polymitic with subangular granules and pebbles of various lithologies, which succeed for medium to thick sandstone packages with tangential and low angle cross-stratification. This package ending in marks of waves arkoses and laminated mudstones at the top. The ca. 800 km2 Tete Complex of NW Mozambique is located at the eastern end of the 830 ±30 Ma Zambezi Belt, near the transition zone into the Neoproterozoic Mozambique Belt. The Complex is located just south of the Sanangoe Shear Zone where Mesozoic and Late Palaeozoic cover rocks obscure much of the region. Country rocks immediately in contact with the Tete Complex include amphibolitic gneiss, graphite-bearing marble, calcsilicate gneiss, muscovite and biotite schist and quartzite of the Chidue Group. The Tete Complex may have been intrusive into the Chidue Group, although there is evidence inferring tectonic emplacement. Those few contact exposures that exist are equivocal. Some of the rocks within the Tete Complex have been affected by metamorphism up to amphibolite grade, although large proportions of the rocks retain pristine magmatic mineralogy and texture. The Tete Complex contains mafic, ultramafic and anorthositic rocks, dolerite dykes and minor Fe-Ti oxide-rich rocks that occur as rubble. Pyroxenite occurs as thin (<1-2 m), cumulate layers within gabbroic rocks. Most exposed anorthositic rocks occur in the Nyangoma area in the eastern part of the Tete Complex. The anorthosites and leucotroctolites are massive, coarse grained (2-3 cm), and contain plagioclase (An47-An57) megacrysts up to 10 cm in length, interstitial olivine (Fo59-Fobs) and orthopyroxene (En59- En75, mean A1203 = 1.84 wt.%) rimmed by clinopyroxene (mean = Wo 46En38Fs i6), pyrite and Fe-Ti oxides. Secondary biotite, iddingsite, epidote and green spinet are present. The stable coexistence of olivine and plagioclase limits the depth of emplacement to <7-8 kbar, or <20- 25 km; a relatively shallow level of emplacement is favored by the generally fine grain size of the gabbroic and doleritic rocks. Compositions of coexisting plagioclase and mafic silicates (orthopyroxene and olivine) are similar to those of massif-type anorthosites. Previously unmapped meta-anorthosite occurs along the western and northern margin (within the Sanangoe Shear Zone) of the Tete Complex and has been metamorphosed to amphibolite grade. The rock contains plagioclase (An38-An39), with the more Ab-rich compositions related to the formation of garnet (mean = A1m67GrotsPYI6Sp2). Metamorphic orthopyroxene (Enso-En53), clinopyroxene (mean = Wo37En38Fs25), mizzonitic scapolite (Me63), amphibole, biotite and apatite are present. High Cl contents in amphibole, scapolite and biotite (e.g., up to 4.7 wt. % in amphibole), suggest that a Cl-rich metamorphic fluid infiltrated the western margin of the Tete Complex. Olivine melagabbro from the north-central part of the Tete Complex contains plagioclase (An70-An26), olivine (Fo82-Fos4) and clinopyroxene (mean = WanEn1Fs0.2, mean A1203 = 2.56 wt. %), with primitive compositions compared to those in Nyangoma anorthositic rocks and pyroxenites. Pyroxenites are modally dominated by clinopyroxene (mean = Wo46-48En36-39Fsi3-18) with accessory interstitial plagioclases (Ano-An45) and discrete and exsolved orthopyroxenes (En 56-En75).…

This study focuses on the Merensky Reef (MR) occurring within the Two Rivers Platinum mine property in the farm Dwarsriver 372 KT, on the Southern sector of the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. Five MR exploratory drill core intersections were obtained. Petrographic and mineral chemical characteristics of these drill core samples focused on the characterization of minerals like clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, chromite and olivine. Data of the cryptic variation of orthopyroxene, plagioclase and chromite, from a 10 m interval (approximate thickness of the section studied); from footwall through the MR to the hangingwall lithologies at Dwarsriver are described in this study. Locally the vertical cryptic variation of these minerals is broadly consistent with regional trends of the RLS. The lateral variation (i.e. along strike) is less pronounced; however, locally these minerals appear to be chemically evolving moving to the south of the property. Footwall orthopyroxene compositions vary from a minimum of En66 and reach a maximum of En84. Those of the MR range from En71 to En85. Hangingwall orthopyroxene compositions range from En60 and reach a maximum of En80. Plagioclase compositions in the footwall units range from a minimum of An69 and reach a maximum of An85. Those of the MR range from a minimum of An35 to a maximum of An84. This wide range in plagioclase compositions is believed to be as a result of the increased presence of fluids within the MR interval. The hangingwall plagioclase compositions range from An64 to An84. By analogy of the Western Limb, where the lithologies of the Northwestern sector are believed to be proximal to the feeder of this limb; the local lateral variation in the present study suggests that the lithologies of either the Central or Western sectors are most probably proximal to the feeder for the Eastern Limb. PGM assemblages associated with and adjacent to the MR chromitite stringers were evaluated using an MLA. Data obtained from this technique is in broad agreement with regional studies of the MR. With the aid of wholerock PGE assays the MLA technique has proven to be a powerful tool in evaluating PGM assemblages relatively quickly, from a few carefully selected samples. The mineralogical associations of the PGM with the gangue and host minerals have shown three main associations. These are the associations of chromite, BMS and silicates with the PGM, of which the base metal sulfide (BMS) association is remarkable given that these have a relatively low modal abundance. The relatively high mineralogical association of the BMS with PGM has been explained by a model involving a base metal sulfide liquid which possibly scavenged chalcophile and siderophile elements. Chromite chemistry and modal analyses of MR secondary silicate phases, which peak adjacent to the chromitite stringers, suggests elevated fluid overprinting within and adjacent to the chromitite stringers. Kvalitet opekarskih sirovina u Srbiji varira u širokom opsegu u pogledu hemijskih, mineraloških, granulometrijskih i keramičko-tehnoloških karakteristika. Različitost sastava i heterogena priroda sirovina uzrokuje varijacije osobina pečenih proizvoda. Da bi se utvrdile matematičke zakonitosti u ponašanju analizirano je 139 uzoraka opekarskih sirovina iz Srbije. Određivan je hemijski i mineraloški sastav polaznih sirovina, kao i ukupni sadržaj karbonata, ostatak na situ od 0,063 mm, a zatim je vršena adekvatna priprema i oblikovanje laboratorijskih proizvoda, sušenje i pečenje na deset temperatura u intervalu 800 - 1100 °C. Ponašanje sirovina pri oblikovanju i sušenju ispitano je na osnovu određivanja vlage oblikovanja, koeficijenta plastičnosti prema Feferkornu, osetljivosti u sušenju prema Bigou, linearnog skupljanja u sušenju i čvrstoće na pritisak suvih oblikovanih tela. Kvalitet uzoraka nakon termičkog tretmana ispitivan je na osnovu: čvrstoće pri pritisku, upijanja vode, gubitka mase žarenjem, skupljanja u pečenju i zapreminske mase. Ponašanje sirovina u toku procesa pečenja proučavano je metodama termičke analize. Takođe su opisane i reakcije koje se odigravaju tokom pečenja na osnovu termalne analize (DSC, TGA i DTG dijagrama) lesnih sirovina. Zbog izuzetno velikog broja podataka, rezultati si obrađeni i prikazani deskriptivnom statistikom (minimum, maksimum, srednja vrednost, standardna devijacija i varijansa). Korelacionom i analizom glavnih komponenti (PCA) su testirani dobijeni podaci radi utvrđivanja međusobne zavisnosti. Rezultati hemijske i mineraloške analize korišćeni su kao polazni podaci za predviđanje osobina pečenih proizvoda, te su prvobitno ispitani post-hoc Tukey-evim testom koji je pokazao statistički značajne razlike između uzoraka i pogodnost rezultata za dalju analizu i modelovanje proučavanih parametara: čvrstoće pri pritisku, upijanja vode, gubitka mase žarenjem, skupljanja u pečenju i zapreminske mase. Utvrđeno je da najbolje rezultate daju matematički modeli u obliku polinoma drugog reda i veštačkih neuronskih mreža. ▼ Mineralization has the potential to capture CO₂. In nature, mineralization is the chemical weathering of alkaline-earth minerals in which stable carbonate minerals are formed, which leads to the removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere. The adsorptive carbonation reaction of olivine ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄)), consisting mainly of pure magnesium silicate (Mg₂SiO₄), a main constituent of the Earth’s crust, was carried out to estimate its potential application to the separation of CO₂ in the presence of water vapor in combustion plumes. Based on the thermodynamics for a basis of the reaction mechanism, the olivine carbonation reaction is thermodynamically favorable. Water vapor was found to play an important role in improving the carbonation rate, and experimental results revealed that carbon dioxide carbon dioxide can bind into olivine minerals to form highly stable surface carbonates. The reaction activity of olivine and pure Mg₂SiO₄ in the presence/absence of water vapor was carried out by varying the temperature, reactant concentrations, and space time. Based on changes in CO₂ concentration with time, the reaction kinetic model of pure Mg₂SiO₄carbonation was developed. The reaction order was found to be approximately 1 for CO₂. The activation energy derived for the Arrhenius equation of Mg₂SiO₄-based carbonation is 76.2 ± 4.8 kJ/mol based on the changes in the reaction rates with temperature in the range of 150-200°C. To investigate the molecular reaction mechanism of CO₂ adsorption on the metal oxide surface, forming carbonates, we performed the quantum mechanical calculation of CO₂ adsorption on a CaO (100) surface. It shows that CO₂ molecules strongly react with the CaO surface due to its high reactivity and high basicity. Consequently, this study will basically lay the groundwork for the chemical mechanism of mineral carbonation of olivine with carbon dioxide in the presence of water vapor and as provide relevant information for the practical application of CO₂ sequestration by stable adsorption on mineral silicates. ▼ Mehr als hundert Jahre archäologischer Forschung haben gezeigt, dass in Mayen in römischer und mittelalterlicher Zeit eines der wichtigsten europäischen Produktionszentren für die Herstellung qualitätsvoller Gebrauchskeramik bestand. Im Rahmen dieser Studie wurden vier Befundkomplexe aus Töpfereisiedlungen vom 4. bis in das 14. Jahrhundert untersucht. Genauer handelt es sich um Keramik aus zwei spätantiken Brennanlagen des 4. Jahrhunderts im Bereich der Flur „Auf der Eich“ an den Straßen „Am Sonnenhang“ und „Frankenstraße“. Weiterhin konnte Material aus zwei Töpferofenfüllungen des 5. bis 9. Jahrhunderts analysiert werden, das 1975 auf dem Grundstück 55 an der „Siegfriedstraße“ in Brennanlagen entdeckt wurde. Hinzu kam Brenngut aus elf Töpferöfen des späten 8. bis 14. Jahrhunderts, welches in den so genannten „Burggärten“ der Genovevaburg von Mayen in den Jahren 1986/87 durch die archäologische Denkmalpflege in Koblenz geborgen wurde. Die mineralogischen Untersuchungen zur Charakterisierung der „Mayener Keramik“ wurden systematisch an den Keramikmaterialien aus diesen Fundstellen durchgeführt. Mittelalterliche Keramik aus Bornheim-Walberberg, Brühl-Eckdorf, Höhr-Grenzhausen, Langerwehe, Frechen, Brühl-Pingsdorf, Paffrath, Raeren, Ratingen-Breitscheid, Siegburg-Seehofstraße, Siegburg-Scherbenhügel, Fredelsloh und Brühl-Badorf konnte für diese Arbeit als Referenzmaterialien ebenfalls untersucht werden. Provenienzanalysen wurden an Keramikproben aus 27 Fundorten, die makroskopisch nach Mayener Ware aussehen, mit mineralogischen Methoden durchgeführt, um sie der Fundregion Mayen eindeutig zuordnen zu können.rnPhasenanalyse, chemische Analyse und thermische Analyse wurden an Keramik sowie Ton durchgeführt. Die Phasenanalyse wurde zur Bestimmung der mineralischen Zusammensetzung von Grundmasse und Magerungsmittel (Röntgendiffraktometrie (XRD), Polarisationsmikroskop, Mikro-Raman-Spektroskopie) verwendet. Die chemische Zusammensetzung wurde durch Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (RFA) ermittelt. Elektronenstrahlmikroanalyse (ESMA) und Laser-Massenspektrometrie mit induktiv gekoppeltem Plasma (LA-ICP-MS) wurden bei den Proben, bei denen weniger als 2g Material zur Verfügung standen, eingesetzt. Brennexperimente wurden am originalen Rohstoff der Keramik aus den „Burggärten“ der Genovevaburg durchgeführt. Gebrannter Ton wurde durch Röntgendiffraktometrie (XRD), Infrarotspektroskopie (IR) und Differential-Thermoanalyse (DTA) analysiert. rnAnhand der Messergebnisse lässt sich die Mayener Keramik aus den vier Fundplätzen in zwei Typen zusammenzufassen: der mit Feldspat-reichem Sand gemagerte römische Typ und der mit Quarz-reichem Sand gemagerte mittelalterliche Typ. Die Änderung des Magerungsmittels von Feldspat- zu Quarzsand weist eine technische Entwicklung zu höheren Brenntemperaturen von der Römerzeit bis in das Mittelalter nach. Atualmente a região de Criciúma é um grande pólo produtor de cerâmicas de qualidade, produzindo mais de 50% das exportações brasileiras de pisos e revestimentos cerâmicos, é um setor de sofisticada tecnologia de produção. Para o controle de qualidade do produto é fundamental a homogeneidade da composição mineralógica a partir do controle geológico na extração das matérias primas pelas mineradoras. Com a motivação de conhecimento das frentes de lavras foram aplicadas técnicas para a caracterização mineralógica em detalhe do material extraído de minas localizadas nos municípios de Turvo e Meleiro/SC, destinado à produção de cerâmicas pelas empresas da região. As rochas são argilitos cinza escuros intercalados com siltitos da Formação Rio do Rasto da Bacia do Paraná. Foram coletadas amostras dispostas verticalmente e analisadas através de difração de raios X para determinação mineralógica semiquantitativa em rocha total pelo método do pó e na fração < 2 e < 4 μm orientadas para identificação dos argilominerais pelas faces hkl = 00l. Foram feitas laminas delgadas para análise petrográfica através de microscopia ótica. Fragmentos foram analisados ao microscópio eletrônico de varredura por meio de imagens de elétrons secundários. Análises químicas de rocha total e da fração < 4 μm foram realizadas por espectrometria de fluorescência de raios X. Por microssonda eletrônica foram feitas microanálises químicas pontuais. A partir destes dados foi identificado o argilomineral montmorilonita do grupo da esmectita como argilomineral predominante, o interestratificado I/S e a ilita diagenética, além de quartzo, mica, feldspato potássico e plagioclásio como minerais detríticos abundantes. As análises mostram a existência de variação da composição mineralógica verticalmente com grande aumento da montmorilonita para a base e aumento do feldspato potássico para o topo na frente de lavra de Turvo e a presença do interestratificado I/S na base e esmectita e ilita/mica para o topo na mina de Meleiro. Estudos de detalhe por difratometria de raios X (determinação do parâmetro b) e microanálises WDS por microssonda eletrônica permitiram identificar como montmorilonita a espécie argilomineral do grupo das esmectitas. Desta forma sabendo-se que deve haver homogeneidade nos lotes da matéria prima explorada é fundamental a amostragem e caracterização mineralógica, sendo fundamental o controle geológico na exploração mineira. Através deste estudo espera-se facilitar o reconhecimento de áreas potenciais para a mineração e melhor adequação dos tipos de argilominerais estudados às necessidades da indústria cerâmica.

▼ Os minerais do grupo do pirocloro (A2B2X6Y1) apresentam grande interesse econômico, principalmente como fonte de nióbio e tântalo, metais que possuem importantes aplicações tecnológicas como a fabricação de aço e a confecção de componentes eletrônicos. Apesar de seu interesse científico e econômico, a maioria das ocorrências brasileiras de minerais do grupo do pirocloro está apenas parcialmente caracterizada ou não dispõe de nenhum estudo mineralógico. Adicionalmente, o atual sistema de classificação dos minerais do grupo do pirocloro, apesar de aprovado pela IMA, não segue as regras gerais de nomenclatura de minerais da própria IMA. Na posição A, não há diferenciação na ocupação por Ca e por Na, e se um ou mais cátions diferentes de Na ou Ca compuserem mais de 20 % total de átomos na posição A, então a espécie é nomeada pelo átomo mais abundante em A (exceto Na e Ca). Por outro lado, a espécie fluornatromicrolita foi aprovada com base na predominância de Na na posição A. Com relação à ocupação da posição B, a divisão entre os grupos não é feita com uma classificação tripartite: as espécies com Nb + Ta >2Ti e Nb > Ta são consideradas como do subgrupo do pirocloro; se Nb + Ta > 2Ti e Ta ≥ Nb, o mineral irá pertencer ao subgrupo da microlita; e se 2Ti ≥ Nb + Ta, o mineral irá pertencer ao subgrupo da betafita. Espécies isoestruturais com outros cátions predominantes na posição B não são incluídas no grupo do pirocloro (por exemplo, romeíta com Sb dominante). Os ânions não são levados em consideração na classificação, mas o flúor foi usado na aprovação da espécie fluornatromicrolita. Neste trabalho, são apresentados novos esquemas de nomenclatura para os minerais do grupo do pirocloro, que levam em consideração os íons ocupantes das posições A, B e Y. Os prefixos são sempre escritos por extenso (\'hidroxi\', \'fluor\', \'calcio\', \'natroétc), enquanto os sufixos são representados por símbolos químicos (Na, F, H2O etc) ou por [] (vazio). Os nomes raízes relacionam-se aos cátions predominantes na posição B, levando a termos como pirocloro, microlita, betafita e romeíta. São apresentados novos dados químicos por MEV-EDS e WDS (incluindo análises de Si, normalmente negligenciado na maioria dos dados da literatura). Foram analisados minerais de seis ocorrências em pegmatitos e uma em carbonatito. Os resultados obtidos permitem separar as espécies em três \'famílias\'. A primeira delas poderia ser denominada \'microlita\', envolvendo fluornatromicrolita, fluorcalciomicrolita, oxinatromicrolita e oxicalciomicrolita. Esta família foi identificada nas ocorrências da lavra do Morro Redondo, Coronel Murta, MG; lavra do Jonas, Conselheiro Pena, MG; mina Quixabá, Frei Martinho, PB; Pegmatito Volta Grande, Nazareno, MG; lavra do Ipê, Marilac, MG; e Pegmatito Ponte da Raiz, Santa Maria de Itabira, MG. No Rio Grande do Sul, são escassos os estudos relacionados à identificação e à caracterização de minerais pedogênicos em ampla escala, bem como aqueles que tratam da influência da mineralogia nos aspectos físicos e químicos dos solos. O sistema solo é resultado da combinação de fatores que atuaram ao longo do tempo geológico, fato evidente no estado do Rio Grande do Sul devido a expressiva variabilidade de classes de solos em seu território. Nesse sentido, o estudo objetivou caracterizar a composição mineralógica de solos formados nas diferentes regiões fisiográficas do Rio Grande do Sul e definir combinações físicas, químicas e mineralógicas responsáveis pela adsorção de fósforo nesses solos. Para tal, foram selecionadas 60 amostras representativas de oito classes de solos de pedoambientes oxidados e com distintos graus de intemperização. As amostras foram previamente coletadas sob vegetação natural na camada de 0 a 20 cm de profundidade. Na fração TFSA, foram realizadas análises físicas (granulometria, área superficial específica, suscetibilidade magnética), químicas (carbono orgânico total, teor de óxidos de ferro pedogênicos e óxidos de baixa cristalinidade, teor de fósforo remanescente) e mineralógicas (difratometria de raio x, estimativa dos minerais por área e largura a meia altura). Os dados foram analisados por correlações de Pearson. Os resultados mostraram ampla variação mineralógica devido aos distintos materiais de origem, influenciando a granulometria, ASE e SM. Os valores de COT mostraram relação positiva com os teores de argila e negativa, principalmente, com os teores de Prem, interferindo nos fenômenos de sorção dos solos. Os teores de Fed aumentaram conforme o incremento de argila nos solos e os teores de Feo foram baixos, ambos devido ao avançado estágio de intemperização dos solos. Na fração argila, predomina a caulinita associada a diferentes proporções de argilominerais 2:1 e óxidos de ferro. A adsorção de fósforo apresenta relação expressiva com os teores de argila, de óxidos de ferro, de carbono orgânico total e, consequentemente, com a área superficial específica do solo.

There are few studies in Rio Grande do Sul making relations with the identification and characterization of pedogenic minerals on a large scale, as well as those that establish the influence of mineralogy on physical and chemical aspects of the soil. The soil system is a result of combination of factors that acted over geological time, an evident fact in Rio Grande do Sul state of due to significant variability of soil classes on his territory. Há poucos estudos sobre a influência da mineralogia no comportamento do solo em relação aos atributos de resistência física. Neste sentido, o estudo tem como hipótese que independentemente do potencial matricial de água no solo a composição mineralógica da fração argila interfere na pressão de préconsolidação, modificando a capacidade de suporte de carga dos solos. Assim, objetivou-se caracterizar a composição mineralógica de classes de solos representativas no Rio Grande do Sul; Determinar parâmetros físico-mecânicos dos solos; E estabelecer correlações entre parâmetros físico-mecânicos com mineralógicos melhorando o entendimento da capacidade de suporte de carga. Para tal, foram selecionados sete solos de duas classes de solos; três Argissolos e quatro Latossolos. As amostras deformadas e indeformadas foram coletadas sob vegetação natural na camada de 10 a 15 cm de profundidade. Na fração TFSA, foram realizadas análises físicas (granulometria e área superficial específica), químicas (carbono orgânico total, teor de óxidos de ferro pedogênicos e óxidos de baixa cristalinidade) e mineralógicas (difratometria de raio x e refletância difusa). Nas amostras indeformadas foram realizadas as análises de permeabilidade ao ar e o ensaio de compressão uniaxial. Os dados foram analisados por correlações de Pearson. Os solos avaliados possuem a caulinita como principal mineral da fração argila, no entanto diferenças com relação aos óxidos de ferro foram encontradas, os quais correlacionaram com a pressão de pré-consolidação. A hematita influenciou positivamente sobre a pressão de pré-consolidação à 100 kPa, assim, dependendo do potencial matricial de água no solo.

There are few studies on the influence of mineralogy on the ground behavior in relation to physical resilience attributes. The is study has hypothesized that regardless of the matric potential of soil water the mineralogical composition of the clay fraction interferes with the pre-consolidation pressure by modifying the soil bearing capacity. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the mineralogical composition of representative soil classes in Rio Grande do Sul; determine physical-mechanical parameters of the soil; and establish correlations between physico-mechanical parameters mineralogical improving the understanding of the load-bearing capacity. To this end, it was selected seven soils of two soil classes; three Ultisols and four Oxisols. The disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected under natural vegetation in the layer from 10 to 15 cm deep. In TFSA fraction, physical analyzes were performed (particle size and specific surface area), chemical (total organic carbon content of pedogenic iron oxides and low crystallinity oxides) and mineralogical (x ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance). In undisturbed soil samples were carried out air permeability tests and uniaxial compression test. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlations. Nesta pesquisa, buscou-se aplicar a um solo de ocorrência significativa na região Sudeste e em parte expressiva do território brasileiro uma técnica para a sua conversão em novos produtos, aqui denominados de solos modificados. Essa técnica teve por base a modificação das composições química e mineralógica do solo em estudo, com intuito de alterar os seus padrões de comportamento geotécnico. O programa de estudo de laboratório abrangeu: (i) caracterizações química, mineralógica e geotécnica do solo em estudo; (ii) desenvolvimento de processos capazes de promover alterações nas propriedades químicas e mineralógicas, com vistas à produção de solos modificados; (iii) caracterizações química e geotécnica dos solos modificados. Com base nos resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que: (i) os métodos desenvolvidos para a modificação do solo em estudo mostraram-se adequados para as finalidades previstas, bem como apresentaram a vantagem de poderem ser, com pequenas adaptações, implementados em trabalhos de campo; (ii) os tratamentos provocaram mudanças significativas nos parâmetros químicos, em especial na CTC do solo; (iii) os tratamentos conferiram ao solo analisado mudanças geotécnicas significativas nos seus parâmetros de plasticidade (redução do LL e LP) e de compactação (aumento do peso específico aparente seco máximo e queda no teor ótimo de umidade) e, em menor escala, nos de resistência à compressão não-confinada, condutividade hidráulica, compressibilidade e resistência ao cisalhamento determinada em ensaios triaxiais.

This research addresses the application of a technique to a soil from the Southeast of Brazil and representing significant portion of the Brazilian territory in order to produce new products herein named modified soils. This conversion was based on the manipulation of the soil chemical and mineralogical compositions in order to change its geotechnical behavior. The laboratory testing program encompassed the following steps: (i) chemical, mineralogical and geotechnical characterization of the soil; (ii) development of chemical and mineralogical procedures for soil modification; (iii) chemical and geotechnical characterizations of the modified soils. Based on the testing data, conclusions are as follow: (i) good performance of the developed procedures for soil modification, which can be applied to field conditions after minor adjustment; (ii) the applied treatments produced significant variation in the chemical soil parameters, specially in the CEC; (iii) the treatments were responsible for significant geotechnical chances in the soil plasticity and compaction parameters, and for minor changes in the soil unconfined compression strength, hydraulic conductivity, compressibility and shear strength determined through triaxial tests.

In the past decade, sites of hydrothermal activity along the Juan de Fuca Ridge have gained a growing amount of attention. Increased sampling has provided the materials for more detailed studies, including those collected from Axial Seamount, a large shield volcano on the central portion of the ridge. Axial Seamount is host to at least three active vent sites, one of which, along the northwest caldera wall, consists of recently active eruptive-fissures and nearby chimney-like spires. A sampled spire from this location and samples from other vent areas are described using reflected and transmitted light techniques. They have been found to consist of the sulphide phases sphalerite, wurtzite, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, isocubanite, and galena. Jordanite and tetrahedrite-tennanite are also known to precipitate at these vent sites, but were not observed here. The most dominant non-sulphide minerals are amorphous silica and barite. Native sulfur, Fe and Mn oxides and a variety of sulfosalts may also be present. The complex textures in these samples reflect precipitation and growth from higher temperature fluids that are mixing with local ambient seawater. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite have revealed salinities in the 5.6 to 7.0 weight % NaCl range, with homogenization temperatures ranging from 214.8°C to 269.4°C. Temperatures of homogenization require pressure-corrections between approximately 9.0°C and 13.0°C, to set-up a range of trapping temperatures that lie between 211.8°C and 279.4°C. Fluid inclusions are also found in wurtzite, barite, and amorphous silica however, these would yield no data. Middle Valley is a sedimented rift valley that lies at the extreme north end of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. A number of hydrothermal sulphide mounds that lie atop the sediment pile have been sampled. The mineralogy is similar to that at Axial Seamount; however, the dominant sulphide phase at Middle Valley is pyrrhotite. Textural differences between the two sites are significant, a result of the traversing of hydrothermal fluids through a thick package of hemepelagic sediment at Middle Valley. Samples from Middle Valley are found to contain no measurable fluid inclusions in the sections available for study. Mineralogical and fluid inclusion studies are important methods that can be used to help solve the complex growth history of sulfides that are and have been accumulating at mid-ocean ridge vent sites.
