▼ Si l’ineffable est tenu pour le paradoxe emblématique dans la secte zen de la religion bouddhique, il semble que le rétrécissement du langage se manifeste dans la mesure de l’interprétation de buddhadhātu (la bouddheité ; nature de bouddha). Il est donc évident que le zen admet à la fois une lacune de langage et une sorte de mouvement permanent de phénomène entraînant ainsi, selon le terme sanskrit du bouddhisme, un sentiment de śūnyatā (la vacuité). Cette absence de la substance permanente ou ce désir d’échapper à la réalité physique nous permettrait de l’associer naturellement non seulement à l’ineffable vide chez Henri Michaux (1899-1984), mais également à ses créations issues de l’inconscient pour reconstituer un espace sacré dans son dedans. À partir de ce constat, notre recherche tente, en se focalisant sur cette dialectique entre macrocosme et microcosme, d’aborder un esprit oriental qui pourrait remonter à sa source religieuse, et s’approcher plus tard de tous les domaines esthétiques. En effet, les empreintes de la mystique orientale (hindouisme, taoïsme, bouddhisme, etc.) dans l’univers spirituel de Michaux apportent déjà un autre regard vis-à-vis de ses procédés ésotériques et nous dévoileraient même quelque chose à la fois de l’ordre de l’ineffable et de l’invisible. p>When the ineffable is widely considered the symbolic paradox in the Zen school of Buddhism, it seems that the narrowness of language has been thus demonstrated in the realm of interpretation of buddhadhātu (buddha-nature). Therefore, the Zen has been characterized by its emphasis on both the rupture of language and a permanent movement of phenomena, which leads probably to a kind of sense of śūnyatā (emptiness). This impermanence of substance or this strong feeling to escape from the physical reality allows us, in this way, to associate it, not only with l’ineffable vide (the ineffable void) of Henri Michaux (1899-1984), but also with his creation driven by the unconsciousness in order to rebuild a sacred space in his dedans (inside).From this perspective, this study aims, by focusing on the dialectic between macrocosm and microcosm, to approach an Oriental spirit which could be traced back to its religious source and gradually permeate through all kinds of aesthetic fields. The stamps of some Oriental mystic thoughts (Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism, etc.) in the spiritual world of Michaux have, moreover, brought another point of view towards his esoteric technique and revealed to us something ineffable as well as invisible.p> Advisors/Committee Members: Milon, Alain (thesis director).

▼ This research will examine the unique cultural context of Japanese Zen as it is practiced, embodied and shared in an American monastic setting. It will look at how this particular “culture of meditation” (defined as the U.S. Zen monastic culture) promoted within these communities may influence the way a person frames their bodies, sense of self and environment. Through this process, I suggest that the experience of self-moves from an ego-centric to a more eco-centric ontology, resulting in a unique environmental worldview that may be related to subjective wellbeing. Using a mixed-methods approach this will be explored through the use of ethnographic grounded theory, surveys and a cognitive test measuring visual processing with the intent of providing a case for how a “culture of meditation” may impact the way we contextualize ourselves within the world around us. An introduction to Buddhism in America will be given, in order to frame the particular Buddhist culture examined in this study, as well as a definition of “meditation” through the vantage of contemporary psychological vocabulary. This study will take a strong interdisciplinary stance. Chapter 3 will examine various theories from psychology, anthropology and ecology as possible frames to interpret the unique cultural and religious identity that is promoted by Zen monastic culture. Then, first hand research conducted at a U.S. Soto Zen monastery in Oregon will be addressed, using an enhanced ethnographic approach to give voice and rigor to the lived experience of how this “culture of meditation” transforms a sense of self and motivates an alternative ecological worldview. Chapter 4 will provide an overview of the methods used, detailing information on participants, setting and an analysis of prior participant observation and Chapter 5 will present and examine the data in each step of the study, providing analyses of the findings and identify the emergent themes. A summary of these analyses and description of the conclusions will be discussed in Chapter 6, as well as the limitations of the research process, applications of the findings and recommendations for future directions. Themes of body, self and environment will be explored throughout the study, with the intention of providing a unique exploration of Zen practice, culture and experience. ▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2016. p>This dissertation examines various conceptions of hope in Kant’s Critique of Judgment, Bloch’s Principle of Hope, Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō, and others. Through an analysis of hope in the above works, I demonstrate that hope is the power to organize our experience and transform the ways in which the world appears to us in accordance with our own ideals. Elucidating this mechanism of hope reveals that distinct ideals in the above theories give rise to two different kinds of hope: the goal-driven and future-oriented conception of hope and the practice-focused and present- oriented conception of hope. The former is evident in Kant’s philosophy and Bloch’s Principle of Hope that emphasize the significance of the universal ideal and the possibility of its achievement in the future, whereas the latter is evident in the teachings of Zen Buddhism that rejects the idea of enlightenment as a future goal and advocates the nonduality of practice and enlightenment. While the dominant discourses of hope can be characterized as the former, this dissertation explores the possibility of launching a praxis theory of hope as a response to the diminishing significance of the universal ideal in the contemporary time. Unlike the dominant theories of hope with the idea of the universal ideal, a praxis theory of hope as a norm can accommodate diverse perspectives and values, showing the importance of hoping itself rather than a specific content of hope based on a set normative standard. While aesthetics exemplifies such theory of hope in Western philosophy, as Rancière’s political aesthetics demonstrates so, this dissertation examines Dōgen’s Zen Buddhist soteriology as an alternative approach to hope and a constructive response to the diminishing significance of the universal ideal. Exploring the possibility of launching a new theory of hope as a norm, this dissertation also contributes to the growing scholarship on hope by initiating a much-needed cross-cultural dialogue to demonstrate the mechanism of hope through its various conceptions in different value systems. Through socially embedded and historically enriched theories from different philosophical traditions, this dissertation attends to diverse values and addresses hope in the fullest sense as an expression of ideals.p>

▼ One of the early texts translated from Sanskrit into ancient Chinese in around 411C.E. is called the Dharmatrāta-dhyāna-sūtra(T15, no.618) which was a detailed account of the meditational methods of Buddhasena and Dharmatrāta who were the two most renowned dhyāna teachers in Kaśmīra around 400C.E. They may be regarded as belonging to the tradition of the Sarvāstivāda Dārṣṭāntika masters who were characterized by their active interest in meditation and popular preaching in which theyexcelled in communicating through poems and allegories. The Dharmatrāta-dhyāna-sūtra exemplifies these features. It is preaching on meditation, written in verses and abounding in similes. Buddhabhadra (359-429), the translator, was also a prominent meditational instructor. This sūtra, despite its unprecedented impact on the development of dhyāna practice and the later proliferation of Ch’an Buddhism in China, has long been under-estimated. It has never been translated from ancient Chinese into modern English for the benefit of the English-speaking world. Hence, the purpose of my thesis is to address this issue, giving appropriate weight to this sūtra with annotation and a critical introduction to clarify the somewhat chaotic background surrounding the compilation of this sūtra. By doing so, I have made painstaking effort in establishing the unshakable claim that the sūtra is a Sarvāstivāda text (Part VII, Introduction). I also compare the methods of meditation expounded in this sūtra with those of the AKB, arriving at the conclusion that they are almost identical (Part XI, Introduction). In addition, the meditation system commonly shared by the Hīnayāna and the Mahāyāna is analysed with a view to demonstrating the fact that whilst the techniques are virtually the same, the interpretation, on the other hand, could be different. In the course of my research, I have also compiled a Chinese-Sanskrit-English glossary, juxtaposing the ancient Chinese terms with Sanskrit and modern English for the benefit of furture researchers. This sūtra essentially preserves the ancient Sarvāstivādin meditation teachniques. But it importantly incorporates Mahāyānistic-Tantric elements, such as the maṇḍala and visualization. This is another important aspect of my text discussed in the introduction of my thesis. As a result, it came to exert a great impact on the subsequent teaching and practice of Chinese Buddhism, particularly those of Buddhist meditation.

▼ Ninguna otra forma de filosofía oriental ha tenido un efecto positivo tan extendido en la cultura y en la pintura contemporanea internacional como la estética Zen. Gracias al nacimiento del budismo Zen en China y su extraordinaria auge e influencia en todos los aspectos de la sociedad y la cultura china, en especial la pintura con tinta a punta de pincel, hizo que se desarrollara en paralelo un espíritu o estética particular, conocida mundialmente por Zen, que no ha parado de propagarse desde que, en el siglo XVI, el budismo Zen cruzara el mar para llegar a Japón. Una vez allí, fecundó la cultura autóctona y motivó el desarrollo de una estética con particularidades propiamente Zen, hasta tal punto que arraigó en la vida cotidiana y se proyectó en distintos ambitos de la vida cultural y de la creatividad. Esta corriente de estética Zen ha sido reconocida desde hace mucho tiempo como la esencia de la estética oriental debido a la fusión del budismo, el taoísmo y el confucianismo, llegando a superar las limitaciones regionales y las diferencias culturales, convirtiéndose en una de las más activas y distintivas, líder en el siglo XX, una vez ya introducida en EE.UU. de América por Soyen Shaku en 1893 en la ciudad de Chicago. Pronto se convertiría en una tendencia admirada y aplicada en los distintos ambitos culturales del país, y en particular seguida de cerca por varios pintores, hasta tal punto que se hizo sentir en la pintura contemporánea tanto de EE.UU, como en los mismos lugares de su origen, es decir de China y Japón. A pesar de su impacto, el fenómeno estético Zen y en particular su influencia cultural y en la pintura contemporánea, no ha sido investigada en profundidad, y existen bastantes lagunas, razón por la cual nos hemos planteado su investigación temática. Una temática de esta tipología requería un planteamiento o enfoque panorámico, por la sencilla razón de que difícilmente se puede entender la estética Zen en la pintura contemporánea, sin conocer sus orígenes, su desarrollo e influencia cultural, así como la trayectoria geográfica o centros internacionales de propagación de la estética Zen. A pesar de su aparente amplitud, intentamos en primer lugar compilar la mayor documentación posible o más destacada que explica la expansión del fenómeno Zen a nivel intercontinental, sin olvidarnos de sus interrelaciones de modo crítico, para entender la extraordinaria influencia de dicho movimiento estético y espiritual en la pintura contemporánea occidental y asimismo oriental, como efecto rebote o retorno a sus lugares de origen. ▼ This inquiry started by examining my own and others experience of Zen, and comparing it with Self Organised Learning. The aim was to see what effect each system had on the lives of the participants. The thesis plots how I had a tacit reliance on myself as a measuring instrument, and how this became an integrating theme running through my 'finally chosen' methods. The methodological difficulties caused by the paradox of trying to understand Zen and also be scientific converged when I realised that I had treated myself as the central measuring instrument throughout the inquiry. It was this discovery which allowed the thesis to be treated as a koan from a Zen perspective and yet to be a contribution to academic knowledge. The thesis traces how personal authenticity became the defining characteristic informing all my methodology. This inquiry asks and answers the question can research be transpersonal? Initially the research started out looking at a transpersonal issue in the form of asking those who had regular interactions with a Zen master about their experience. This learning curve was contrasted with Learning Conversations with postgraduates at the centre for the Study of Human Learning, using inner directed learning in their research projects. During the research process, several major re-orientations took place which, necessitated changing my method and my interpretation of the data. These shifts of direction were largely driven by a need to find a method of inquiry which was appropriate to uncovering the transpersonal qualities I was investigating. As the inquiry developed I widened my sources of data to include art, fiction, accounts of death and grieving, and satsang (questions and answers with a master) in order to give an in depth picture of the impact of the transpersonal on participants' lives. In treating the thesis as a koan there can be no emphasis placed on which purposes related to which outcomes. It was in the gradual abandonment of such a stance that the deeper insights and resolutions occurred. During the inquiry I eventually identified the qualities of wholeness, authenticity and openness as the defining characteristics which appeared to trigger changes in direction. Such an approach made it necessary to examine the implications for validity that approaching transpersonal issues in this way had uncovered.

▼ Currently the field of architectural thinking is steeped in Western discourse. The INTENTIONS of this research are to reveal how ideas of a Direct Radical intuition as an Eastern perspective can be infused into a field of Western dominated architectural thinking paradigm. This investigation into the landscape of architectural theory proposes that a study of Japanese Zen Buddhist aesthetics through ‘Direct Radical intuition’ will draw us toward an ‘Architecture of Presence.’ The formation of Japanese philosophical and religious thoughts will go through EXPLORATIONS culminating in two Buddhist principles; wabi (beautiful poverty) through chado, or ‘the way of tea’ and ki (life force) through aikido, or ‘the way of harmony’ that were absorbed by Zen. Additionally, an examination of selected Western philosophical thought in Phenomenology and Post Modernism that aligns with or is contrary to aesthetics of Zen will be used to further clarify the ASSOCIATIONS to these principles. Finally, an analysis of selected projects by Japanese architect Tadao Ando will further reveal how the proclivity toward aesthetic principles of Zen can illuminate CONNECTIONS for a visible architectural expression. A synthesis of this study will result in an assimilation of terms in alliance with ‘Direct Radical Intuition’ that has at its essence a ‘concrete pragmatism’ and ‘creative spontaneity’ disclosing a means of navigating through the architectural design and construction process. A comprehension of the architectural issues with transparency imbued with ‘Direct Radical intuition’ allows the designer to look within and beyond self and culturally imposed boundaries. This insight leads toward an ‘Architecture of Presence’ that is rooted in fundamental aspects of human activity and ascension toward a nourishment of the human spirit. This imminent enrichment facilitates the empowerment of IMPLICATIONS toward individual, cultural and social place in the larger context of a compassionate global integration. ▼ The main purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between Gestalt-Therapy and Zen-Buddhism universes, based on a conceptual analysis for contributing to Gestalt-Therapy theoretical development. Gestalt model has been adopted as investigation methodology using the creation and destruction figures (gestalten). Initially it was determined Perls as the start up reference or initial figure, due to his interest in Zen-Buddhism. The analysis of his collected works and auto-biography has defined his contact with Buddhism and, as consequence, its reverberation in Gestalt-Therapy creation. Within Gestalt-Therapy theoretical content, some concepts are related to Zen and others illustrate a close interaction, as the awareness flow/continuum awareness and meditation. Both Gestalt-Therapy and Zen-Buddhism have been investigated on the human being conceptual analysis perspective, as well as self, I, here and now, temporality, addressing their similarities and differences. Situations captured from Gestalt-Therapy clinical practice, stories and Zen-Buddhism mondos have contributed for the understanding of concepts presented in this study. This relationship establishment has allowed the identification of main articulation structures between Gestalt-Therapy and Zen-Buddhism, pointing out the fundamental topics that differentiate their identities. p>Este trabalho teve como objetivo, por meio da análise de conceitos da Gestalt-Terapia e do Zen-Budismo, estabelecer um diálogo entre esses dois universos tendo em vista contribuir para o desenvolvimento do corpo teórico da Gestalt-Terapia. Como método de investigação utilizou-se o modelo gestáltico através do processo de formação e destruição de figuras (gestalten). Inicialmente delineou-se o ponto de partida ou figura inicial, o interesse de Perls, principal expoente da Gestalt-Terapia, pelo Zen-Budismo. A leitura e análise de suas obras e de sua autobiografia permitiram delinear seu contato com o Zen-Budismo e conseqüentemente sua reverberação na criação da Gestalt-terapia. No corpo teórico da Gestalt-Terapia, alguns conceitos estão relacionados ao Zen-Budismo e outros revelam uma grande aproximação, como o fluxo de awareness ou continuum de awareness e a meditação. As concepções de homem da Gestalt-Terapia e do Zen-Budismo foram investigadas, assim como os conceitos de self, eu, o aqui e agora, e a temporalidade assinalando-se suas convergências e divergências. ▼ This research is constituted as a narrative of a path where we have walked through a hermeneutics in which body and mind are implied, theoretical and practical aspects, as part of an effort towards a self knowledge by the reading of the text. The thought of Eihei Dogen goes back to the XIII century, in the context of a medieval Japan, but his ideas have only recently started to become known outside the field of his religious school of thought. In his point of view, to study the Buddhism means to become Buddhism. An intellectual apprehension which does not find correspondence in a concrete action, reflecting the theoretical apprehension, is not valued. By writing, he makes it from his proper accomplishment of the teachings, and by teaching he intends to lead each apprentice to find his/her own way of accomplishing. Educating turns to be an expression of the conception that we have assumed, allowing the conditions that favors the accomplishment of what we understand as important to our lives. The comprehension of the sense of impermanence in his thought is fundamental to understand his point of view over time. Dogens contribution, based on his view of impermanence, trends towards problematizing the contingency in a deep and radical way, with a disposition to accept, to confront and to find freedom in terms of ones own impermanence, more than to run away from it. For Dogen, it is useless to discuss Time as a philosophical subject separate from an implication of action as reply to the problem of impermanence. Our study articulates moments of theoretical inquiry of Dogens work, deepening our comprehension about the idea of present Time in his educative proposal, in a transdisciplinar perspective of education. The Buddhist dialectics emphasizes the importance of the reality, and a polissemic hermeneutics which is necessary to understand it as part of the absolute. In this study we deal with a rationality that perceives a complementary relationship between science and tradition, and which points to a necessary relationship between knowledge and sustainability of life, in the sense that knowledge must be in tune with the preservation of the basic conditions of welfare and renewal of the life of all beings. The conception of time as simultaneity shows the dynamic nature of movement as an interconnection among all beings, as well as the connection among the moments as the interpenetration of past, present and future time in the instant. For Dogen, the being-time possesses characteristics of discontinuity and continuity simultaneously. Each being is entirely what it is in its absolute instant and at the same time it is connected to everything that exists, by means of the present being-time. Thus, we have moments of being-time, discontinuous, and a deep interconnection among everything that exists. Dogens teaching does not intend to finish with the problem of the impermanence, but to lead to a genuine accomplishment, that shall penetrate the ontological and existential sense of transitority. Als nicht näher definierbares inter steht er hier für eine Offenheit, die in der zwischen-kulturellen Begegnung auf beschreibende Fixierungen zugunsten eines Nachvollzugs von Grunderfahrungen, denen philosophisches Denken oder Tun aufruht, verzichtet. Wesentliche Impulse zu einer sich gerade neu findenden, multiperspektivischen interkulturellen Philosophie kommen dabei von der Kyoto-Schule, die ein Denken westlicher Philosophie in deren eigener Begrifflichkeit hinterfragt und herausfordert. Wo ein vorgängig substantialisierendes westliches Denken ein Zwischen findet, steht dem im Denken des Zen-Buddhismus eine grundsätzliche Offenheit der Leere gegenüber. Der Frage, wie ein Zwischen in der östlichen Philosophie, im Kontext deren Strömungen und Perspektiven, gedacht ist, will diese Arbeit anhand zentraler Texte japanischer und indischer Philosophie nachgehen. Die Arbeit ist in fünf Abschnitte gegliedert: Die Einleitung stellt aktuelle Bezüge zu dem Begriff in der europäischen interkulturellen Philosophie her und folgt anschließend in drei Kapiteln seiner Bedeutung in der östlichen Philosophie. Die Kapitel sind: a. Die Philosophie des Zen-Buddhismus in der Lesart der Kyoto-Schule, b. Metaphysik und Menschenbild in der Sāṃkhya Kārikā, dem ältesten atheistischen und dualistischen philosophischen System Indiens, und c. Die Philosophie des Yoga am Beispiel des Patañjali-Yoga-Sutra. In einer zusammenfassenden Schlussbetrachtung soll ein Denken des Zwischen, wie es sich den östlichen Philosophien darstellt, in den Grundzügen zusammengefasst werden. Die Philosophie des Zen-Buddhismus und ein Denken der Leere, des „absoluten Nichts“, wie es in der Lesart der Kyoto-Schule als Meontologie zum Ausdruck kommt, wird in Grundlagentexten von zwei der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Kyoto-Schule deutlich. In Keiji Nishitanis „Vom Wesen der Begegnung“ werden grundlegende Unterschiede im westlichen und östlichen Denken offenbar, in Shizuteru Uedas Deutung der zehn Ochsenbilder, einer Lehr-Geschichte des Zen-Buddhismus, entfaltet sich der Weg der Befreiung als zunehmende Öffnung einer in sich selbst gefangenen Weltsicht. Śūnyatā, die Einheit von Leere und Form, zeigt sich dabei als Schlüsselbegriff für ein „Denken aus dem Zwischen“. Die indische Philosophie und die hier ausgewählten Grundlagentexte – die Sāṃkhya Kārikā des Kapila und das Yoga Sutra des Patañjali – sind historisch weit vor dem japanischen Zen-Buddhismus anzusiedeln und erweitern und verdeutlichen Hintergrund und Grundannahmen östlicher Philosophie. Die nüchterne Dialektik der Sāṃkhya Kārikā entfaltet die Matrix eines Seins-Geschehens, welches zwei transzendente Urprinzipien im Wunsch nach Erkenntnis als Schöpfung entfalten. Sie skizziert eine Metaphysik, aus der die an der realisierenden Erfahrung orientierten Wege von Buddhismus und Yoga ihren Ausgang nehmen.
