▼ We are experiencing a population explosion of individuals ages 65 and older. Currently, more than 12% of the United States’ population is 65 or older, and as a benchmark, over three-quarters of the current population will reach 65 (in 1870 3% of the population reached 65). In the next 50 years, the older population will double to 80 million or 20% of the total population. It is clear that people are living longer than ever before; many of those in this age group are part of the ‘baby boom’ born in the years 1946 to 1963. Further, over the past century, there has been a demographic shift and by the year 2030, there will be more people over 65 than younger than 18 in the United States. These facts and numbers may lead to a shortage in the number of social workers and other care professionals to provide support and services to this population. Schools of social work nationwide are not graduating the number of social workers anticipated to meet the needs and the demands of the growing adult population. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine what factors are influential for Master of Social Work (MSW) students to choose gerontology and/or work with older adults. Through the use of four focus groups, my goal was to ascertain the following: what influences and factors shape the decisions of MSW students to work with older adults, how “attitudes on aging,” “life experiences,” and education influence their professional focus, and what advice would they give to professionals and educators to encourage (or promote) an interest in aging among their peers. Findings from the study showed that the lack of information, little emphasis on skill development, and practice experience in the curriculum for the social work students prevent many from feeling confident or knowledgeable about this area of practice. The focus group participants shared many insights and suggestions as to how educators and social workers can respond to the demand for more professionals in the field of gerontology. By educating and informing social work students about the value and growing opportunities, more graduating MSW students may consider this a viable career option. With an emerging awareness of the need for more social work professionals in all types of agencies and settings that serve older adults, social work professionals must be knowledgeable about and learn what they can do to contribute to the needs of an aging society and develop the resources and settings for making this contribution happen. ▼ In a fast-paced dynamic world, the key to success lies in the ability to accept change and to rapidly respond to demands placed by ever increasing competitive environments. In business, the impact of products and services in meeting or exceeding customer’s expectations in such environments is measured by customer satisfaction and the importance thereof cannot be downplayed, thus providing management with a metric that guides and augments change. Subsequently, these dynamic competitive forces are pushing sectors such as Higher Education into the realm of service industries, where stakeholders such as students and alumni are viewed as customers. Correspondingly, measuring their satisfaction has become important as this provides strategic insight, whilst enhancing academic programmes and the student experience. The purpose of this research study was to identify the factors that determined satisfaction with the MBA programme as viewed by students and the alumni of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Business School. Furthermore, it advanced the field of stakeholder theory by identifying alumni as a key stakeholder in business schools. Consequently, the research was exploratory and consisted of quantitative and literature components where hypotheses were developed and relationships between factors analysed, in addition to the literature reviewed. The literature introduced key concepts to this study, such as alumni as stakeholder, alumni satisfaction, satisfaction with the MBA programme, measuring alumni satisfaction, MBA alumni networks and alumni communication. The factors that determined alumni satisfaction were identified by means of a statistical analysis of the data collected by the research instruments. Correspondingly, the findings indicate various factors determine satisfaction with the independent variables highlighted in this study, which are the Facilities, the MBA Programme, the Social Experience, the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter, the NMMU Business School brand and Communication. Furthermore, it was established that there is a significant link between Social Experience, the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter, the NMMU Business School Brand, Communication and Alumni Satisfaction.As services industries such as Higher Educational Institutions get exposed to competitive pressure, customer satisfaction comes to the fore and there are certain factors that need to be addressed to enhance satisfaction. Subsequently, this study highlights this pressure and satisfaction levels can certainly be improved by the institution across all the independent variables identified, especially in areas such as the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter and Communication. Consequently, the NMMU Business School, for the first time have metrics to identify the factors that determine satisfaction with the MBA programme as viewed by their alumni and resultantly can strategically benefit by taking the views of their most important stakeholder into account.

Cette recherche vise à analyser et à comprendre le rapport qu’entretient le professeur des écoles en formation initiale avec son futur métier. En prenant appui sur la théorie structurale des représentations sociales l’objectif principal de cette recherche consiste à étudier des populations d’étudiants inscrits en 1ère année de Master MEEF (début de la formation initiale) d’une part et en 2ème année (fin de la formation initiale) d’autre part quant à leurs représentations sociales du métier auquel ils se destinent. Il convient de penser que les connaissances produites par l’analyse de ces représentations et de leur évolution au cours de la formation initiale peuvent permettre de comprendre les fondements des systèmes de pensée et d’action des professeurs des écoles qui entrent dans le métier. Cette recherche prend appui sur une pluri-méthodologie qui fait appel à deux principaux outils de recueil de données : l’entretien et le questionnaire. Les résultats obtenus montrent qu’il existe bien une représentation sociale de l’objet « métier de professeur des écoles » chez les étudiants en début de formation initiale d’une part et chez les étudiants en fin de parcours d’autre part. Ces RS font apparaître, entre les deux populations concernées, des points communs et des différences quant à leurs contenus et leurs structures. La mise en évidence d’un véritable processus de transformation de la représentation sociale du métier au cours de la formation initiale chez les sujets tend à affirmer l’existence d’une évolution de la conception du métier en termes de professionnalisation.

This study aims at analysing and understanding the relationship which the primary school teacher in initial formation, maintains with their future job. Taking support on the structural theory of the social representations, the main objective of this study consists in studying groups of students registered in 1st year of a MEEF Master’s degree (at the beginning of their initial formation) on one hand, and in 2nd year (at the end of their initial formation) on the other hand, as for their social representations of the job for which they intend themselves. It is advisable to think that the knowledge produced by the analysis of these representations and their evolution during the initial formation can allow to understand the foundations of the systems of thought and action of primary school teachers who enter the job.This study relies on a multi-methodology which exploits two main tools of data collection : the interview and the questionnaire. The results show there certainly is a social representation of the object “primary school teacher job” for students at the beginning of their initial formation on one hand and for students at the end of the formation on the other hand.
