▼ This psychobiography focuses on the leadership style of Martin Luther King, Jr., a leader in the United States civil rights movement. King fought against racism, imperialism, poverty and political disenfranchisement, preached a philosophy of non-violence, and aimed to bring about reconciliation among classes, races, and nations. Transformational leaders stimulate and inspire followers to both achieve remarkable outcomes and, in the process, develop their own leadership capacity. This study makes use of a qualitative research method and is a longitudinal psychobiographical case study. The study aimed to explore, describe, and interpret the leadership style demonstrated by King according to the four leadership dimensions in transformational leadership theory. This psychobiographical study is exploratory-descriptive in nature. King was chosen as a research subject via purposive non- random sampling based on the interest value and significance of his life. Data on King’s leadership style was collected from both primary and secondary sources. Data was analysed according to Alexander’s (1988) method and Miles and Huberman’s (1994) approach. To ensure a trustworthy study, the four criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability were considered. The research did not cause any “distress or harm” to the subject. The subject is long deceased, and a large amount of psychobiographical research was based on “archival” information which was publicly available. Thus reporting such information posed minimal risk of criminal or civil liability being brought against the subject. King was found to demonstrate leadership style associated with idealized influence and inspirational motivation to a much higher extent than individualized consideration or intellectual stimulation. This finding contributes to a more specific understanding of the style of leadership King displayed. The insights gained from this study can be used to guide improvements in leadership practice, in terms of the development of leaders in industry.

▼ Few can deny that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s untimely death had a profound impact on American life. In this dissertation, I argue that the assassination inspired musicians, producers, artists, and consumers across the nation to reconstruct soul music and, in its place, construct the cultural idiom known as funk. Narrating the process by which black artists' embraced and popularized funk modes of expression, this dissertation traces how the genre extended directly from post-assassination trauma and attempted to provide a purposeful announcement of black solidarity and an uncensored narrative of the black American experience. In telling the story of funk, its origins, and its long-term cultural impact, this dissertation collects, narrates, and analyzes the sounds and voices of the genre. It highlights its musicians, management, critics, and fans while demonstrating how these individuals derived inspiration from the King legacy. The funk movement, which emerged as an alternative to the more militant Black Freedom Movement platforms of the 1960s and 1970s, ultimately recast mainstream black identity as forever dynamic and distinct, but indisputably American. In telling the story of funk, its origins, and its long-term cultural impact, this dissertation collects, narrates, and analyzes the sounds and voices of the genre. It highlights its musicians, management, critics, and fans while demonstrating how these individuals derived inspiration from the King legacy. Research and writing explores James Brown's activism, music, and stylistic innovations, all of which profoundly challenged the creative centers of Motown, Stax, and Hollywood to offer their own interpretations of funk. In the context of these chapters, purveyors used funk modes of expression to react to the death of Dr. King, express black pride, comment on the broader problems of black America, and showcase new iterations of black fashion. The final stage of this project hones in on the process by which funk's most successful albums, along with high-grossing blaxploitation films and black network television, gradually became permanent components of American popular culture. In the end, the broader cultural impact of funk, inasmuch as it gave rise to new musical genres, emerges as directly responsible for black music's supremacy over contemporary mainstream American airwaves and the establishing of a more prominent position within the American culture industry.

▼ Pro gradu -tutkielmani aiheena on Martin Luther Kingin ja Nelson Mandelan kansalaisoikeustaistelut. 1900-luvun jälkipuoliskolla King taisteli rotuerottelua vastaan Yhdysvalloissa ja Mandela Etelä-Afrikassa. Tarkastelen tutkimuksessani, miten onnistuneet kansalaisoikeustaistelut rakennetaan heidän esimerkkinsä perusteella. Tutkin, millaisia kansalaisoikeustaistelijoita he olivat ja mikä heidän asemansa oli taistelussa sekä millaiset menetelmät ja tavoitteet he valitsivat taisteluilleen. Keskityn erityisesti valintojen perusteluihin ja legitimointiin. Tutkimusmetodini on vertailu, jonka avulla selvitän, miten Martin Luther Kingin ja Nelson Mandelan taistelut yhtenevät ja eroavat rajaamissani näkökulmissa. Samankaltaisuuksien ja eroavaisuuksien valossa pohdin myös, miten rotuerotteluun yleisesti voidaan puuttua ja miten kansalaisoikeudet on mahdollista saavuttaa. Aineistoni koostuu pääasiassa Martin Luther Kingin ja Nelson Mandelan omasta tuotannosta. Etsin tutkimuskysymyksiini vastauksia ensisijaisesti heidän puheistaan ja kirjoituksistaan. Merkittäviä teoksia ovat muun muassa Kingiin liittyvä kokoelmateos A testament of hope: the essential writings and speeches of Martin Luther King ja Mandelan elämäkerta Long walk to freedom. Aineistoni tukena hyödynnän tutkimuskirjallisuutta ja aiheeseen liittyviä internet-lähteitä. Kingin ja Mandelan kansalaisoikeustaistelut ovat paljon tutkittuja aiheita, mutta lähtökohtani on, että niitä ei ole aikaisemmin vertailtu toisiinsa. Martin Luther Kingillä ja Nelson Mandelalla oli paljon yhteistä kansalaisoikeustaistelijoina. He aloittivat taistelun nuorena, nousivat johtoasemaan koulutuksensa, luonteenpiirteidensä ja yhteiskunnallisen asemansa perusteella ja sitoutuivat taisteluun niin, että siitä muodostui heidän elämäntehtävänsä. Taistelumenetelmissä sitä vastoin Kingin ja Mandelan välillä oli selkeitä eroja. Kingin taistelumenetelmän määrittivät periaate ja vakaumus, Mandela vaihtoi menetelmäänsä olosuhteiden mukaan. King nojautui alusta loppuun väkivallattomaan vastarintaan, kun taas Mandela taisteli välillä väkivaltaisin keinoin. Kummatkin kuitenkin ratkaisivat taistelunsa väkivallattomin keinoin, joten rauhanomaiset keinot ovat heidän esimerkkinsä perusteella tie menestyksekkääseen kansalaisoikeustaisteluun. Tärkeimmät tavoitteet olivat molemmilla samat. Kumpikin heistä tavoitteli erityisesti demokratiaa ja poliittisia oikeuksia, kuten äänioikeutta. King korosti koko taistelunsa ajan vastustajan kunnioittamista ja rakastamista ja unelmoi rotujen välisestä yhteydestä Yhdysvalloissa. Mandela suhtautui alun perin kielteisesti vastustajiin, mutta hänen ajattelunsa muuttui samanlaiseksi Kingin kanssa kansalaisoikeustaistelun edetessä Etelä-Afrikassa. Heidän kaikkia tavoitteitaan yhdisti pyrkimys hyvään ja oikeudenmukaisuuteen, niin etteivät myöskään vastustajat joutuisi kärsimään.

▼ The purpose of this dissertation is to discover Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s interpretation of freedom. King’s life was dedicated to a pursuit of freedom for African Americans, the poor, and unfree people around the world. This dissertation takes a comprehensive approach to answering the question: What did King envision when he spoke of freedom? To answer that research question I address King’s interpretation of freedom; the significance of freedom to him; and how he hoped to apply freedom in the sociopolitical world? The answers to these questions are sought through the interpretation, and analysis of King’s beliefs as presented in his writings. This dissertation asserts that King’s interpretation of freedom is that people possess the innate ability to decide who they are and how they will be and that each person has the right to actualize her/his will in the phenomenal world. Important to his idea of freedom are some of the components included in the Human Development and Capabilities Approach—especially the conviction that people have the innate right to both substantive and instrumental freedoms. This dissertation argues that King’s idea of freedom was rooted in his experience as an American, an African American and Black Christian; his commitment to the ideas of Christian personalism; his belief that a good state will both protect and provide freedom; and that the moral law of God is on the side of freedom. Questions for further consideration arise out of this dissertation. Is King’s dream too utopian? Is he attempting to overcome the harsh reality that one’s existence is a struggle against the forces that are beyond human capability (e.g., Is he in a way denying death?). Another question that arises from this dissertation addresses the matter of a transcendent moral code. If King’s interpretation of freedom is rooted in God’s law, who is the human arbiter of God’s law? With the growth of secularism in the United States and closeting of religious dialogue in the public square, is it possible to realize King’s dream? These are important questions; however, they do not diminish from King’s interpretation of freedom and the value he placed on realizing freedom in the world. Den här uppsatsen är en kritisk analys av King och hans ickevåldsideologi. Uppsatsens syfte och avgränsning är att granska och redogöra för den ideologi som King genom sina tal, predikningar och övriga skrifter redogjorde för. Metoden jag använt mig av är att systematisera Kings ideologi för att därefter analysera den. Efter en kritisk granskning av Kings ickevåldsideologi står det klart att den är koherent, men att hans argumentation emellanåt är bristfällig. I synnerhet brister King vid en rimlighetsprövning. Kings ickevåldsideologi utgick från en teocentrisk världsbild med naturrättslig filosofi. Han menade att alla människor är skapade till Guds avbild och att alla människor har möjligheten att göra gott. Kings ickevåldsideologi grundar sig på aktivt motstånd där människan med kärleken som redskap och civil olydnad kan åstadkomma samhällsförändringar. Han tog tydligt avstånd från all typ av våldshandlingar och menade att våld aldrig medför en varaktig förändring, att våld är omoraliskt och ovärdigt en människa samt att ickevåld är det enda sättet att förändra samhällsproblem sett ur ett långsiktigt perspektiv.

The purpose of this Master thesis is to give an account of and review the ideology yhat King presented through his preaching, speeches and other sources. The metod I have chosen for this purpose is to systematize King’s ideology and the to critically analyze it. When doing so I have discoverd that King’s non-violent ideology is coherent, but that his argumentation is somewhat defective, especially when examing its plausibility. King’s non-violence ideology was based on a theocentric wordview and a natural law pholosophy. He tought that all men are created in the image of God and that all humans have the possibility to do good. King’s non-violence ideology is based on active resistance where people use love and civil disobedience as tools to enforce subversive changes. King was against all types of violent actions and stated that violence never leads to sustainable change, that violence is immoral and unworthy of any human. King also said that non-violence is the only way to combat societal problems in a long-term perspective.

On 2 November 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday into law. His signature ended a fifteen year struggle to make King’s birthday a Holiday. Advocates for the Holiday, such as Coretta Scott King, Representative John Conyers and Senator Ted Kennedy planned to honour not only King, but the entire civil rights movement that famously confronted the ‘American Dilemma’ of institutionalised racism in the 1950s and 1960s. The Holiday was seen as an act of atonement for centuries of racism, slavery and segregation that stretched back to the American Revolution. It honoured the African American contribution to American life and celebrated racial integration and nonviolence. After the first King Holiday in 1986, scholars Vincent Harding, Michael Dyson and David Garrow argued that it relied too much on King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. They wrote that King’s radical legacy was forgotten and that conservatives sought to downplay his criticism of militarism and economic inequality. Scholars were correct to note this trend, yet since 1986 little has been added to this analysis, even as scholars heed the call by Jacquelyn Dowd Hall to study the Long Civil Rights Movement. Most who write about King Day focus on the 1970s and early 1980s Holiday campaign and this thesis builds on their work by analysing Holiday celebrations in the mid-to-late 1980s and 1990s. In 1984, Congress established the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday Commission in order to organise King Day. Led by Coretta Scott King, the Commission planned ten King Holidays from 1986 to 1996. It left a vast, but underutilised, archive for scholars. This thesis is based on research in that archive and presents a new understanding of how the King Holiday was celebrated. This thesis is a history of the Holiday and the Commission. It addresses the questions: Why was King celebrated with a Holiday; who celebrated; and how? It analyses who organised the Holiday and what images of King they promoted. The thesis argues that King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech symbolised celebrations in the 1980s because the Commission attempted to create a popular Holiday. This meant that King Day had a moderate and even conservative tone, made possible because many appointed to the Commission were conservatives. Yet, in the mid-1990s, during President Clinton’s administration, a new image of King was presented to the public: King the Drum Major. This image was based on King’s ‘Drum Major Instinct’ sermon and emphasised King’s humility, dedication to service and concern about economic inequality.

Youth work in Australia is in the process of creating a clear self-consciousness and idea of its role, and a philosophy of nonviolence provides a strong foundation for further development. The study was based on the first three phases of intervention research (problem analysis and project planning, information gathering and synthesis, and design) within a heuristic paradigm. It involved a literature review, a telephone survey of 60 youth workers, in-depth interviews with 20 young people and 15 youth workers, and focus groups with 16 youth workers. Literature on youth work in Australia and Britain, and youth care in Canada and South Africa helped identify key features of youth work. Ten principles of nonviolence were developed based on principled nonviolence literature. The telephone survey provided a broad overview of current practice in New South Wales, and identified issues for further exploration in the interviews. The in-depth interviews with youth workers and young people explored their perceptions of violence and discrimination within their services; ways in which youth workers prevent and respond to disruptive, violent and unsafe behaviour; and ways in which youth work practice can be consistent with a philosophy of nonviolence. Based on the research, a model of nonviolent practice was developed, and then refined following focus groups with youth workers. The model encourages youth workers to be committed to nonviolence in all they do; to develop a reflective work practice; to build professional, caring relationships; to focus on power-with; to be committed to social change; to apply principles of social justice; to ensure there are adequate, appropriate staff and resources; to negotiate clear expectations and boundaries; to create a positive environment; to respond to behaviour nonviolently; and to facilitate informal education.
