▼ In 2018, approximately 2.01 billion tons of waste was generated in the world. By 2050, this number is expected to increase drastically to 3.40 billion tons of waste annually as lower income countries develop and the world population increases (Kaz, Yao, BhadaTata, & Van-Woerden, 2018). Some of the waste can be combusted to produce heat and power, leaving residual ash behind. This also decreases the volume of the waste flow by 90 % (Lam, Ip, Barford, & McKay, 2010). As waste generation is expected to increase while the land available for landfilling decreases, it is of interest to recycle as much as possible from waste, as well as from ash, and move towards a more circular economy in which no new raw materials are needed. One technology that can be used for waste incineration is Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC). OCAC is a type of fluidized-bed combustion, in which the conventional inert bed material is replaced fully or in part with metal oxides, called oxygen carrier. The oxygen carrier is reduced in fuel rich parts of the reactor and oxidized in oxygen rich parts during the combustion, thereby improving the distribution of oxygen in space and time. This improves the combustion efficiency. The interaction between the oxygen carrier and fuel ash can lead to an uptake of certain elements such as zinc, copper, potassium, calcium and phosphorous among others. The aim of the thesis was to investigate how major ash components (Si, Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, K, Na and Cl) and the minor ash components Cu and Zn interact with the oxygen carrier bed material ilmenite (FeTiO3) during waste incineration. A focus on Cu and Zn was chosen since these usually have the highest concentrations out of the trace metals that can be valuable for recycling, as they are high-cost metals and energy intensive to produce. The investigation was carried out by simulating different boiler conditions and performing thermodynamical equilibrium calculations (constructing phase diagrams) using the software FactSage 7.2. The simulations indicated that ilmenite interacts with Al2O3, CaO/CaCO2, Na2O, K2O, MgO, ZnO and Cu/Cu2O but does not interact with SiO2. The compounds formed from interactions between ilmenite and ash which could be relevant for OCAC applications are FeAl2O4, CaTiO3, (Na2O)(TiO2)3, (Na2O)(TiO2)6, ZnFe2O4, (ZnO)2TiO2, (Cu2O)(Fe2O3) (s2) and (CuO)(Fe2O3) (s3). Experimentally, potassium has been found as KTi8O16 in ilmenite particles rather than as K2Ti3O7 and K2Ti6O13 as indicated by the simulations. The compound KTi8O16 is missing in the software database, therefore giving inconclusive results not corresponding to experimental findings.

The aim of this study was to quantify the presence of major and minor elements in the sediments of the Jundiaí-Potengi estuary, bordering the municipalities of Macaíba, Natal and São Gonçalo do Amarante in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, considering the evidence of anthropic activity along this estuary, resulting in pollution by treated and untreated wastewaters as well as those produced by industry and shrimp farming. The assessment of the environmental status of this estuary was based on physical-chemical parameters, such as granulometry, organic matter and the major (Al, Fe, Mn and P) and minor (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) elements found in sediment samples. Two collections were made at 12 georeferenced points along the channel of the estuary at different times. Granulometric analysis was carried out and the percentage of organic matter was determined. The sediments were microwave digested using acid digestion and quantitative analyses of the elements Al, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, P, Pb and Zn were performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Sediment analysis followed the methodology proposed by US EPA 3051A for total elements analysis. The small correlation between the organic matter and the elements studied here suggests that they are of geochemical rather than anthropic origin. The analytical results obtained from the bottom sediment samples in the study area show that the concentration of elements was below the reference values for standard shales (Turekian &Wedepohl, 1961) at the vast majority of points analyzed, ruling out a possible contamination by metals

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar, por meio da quantificação, a presença dos elementos maiores e menores nos sedimentos do Estuário Jundiaí-Potengi localizado as margens dos municípios de Macaíba, Natal e São Gonçalo do Amarante no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, considerando as evidências de atividades antrópicas ao longo deste estuário, no qual se destacam a poluição por efluentes domésticos, tratados e sem tratamento, efluentes industriais e de carciniculturas. A avaliação do estado ambiental desse estuário foi feito através da determinação dos parâmetros físicoquímicos, como granulometria, matéria orgânica e elementos maiores, Al, Fe, Mn e P, e elementos menores, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb e Zn em amostras de sedimento deste estuário. As coletas foram feitas em 12 pontos, georeferênciados, na calha, ao longo desse estuário, e em duas coletas com períodos distintos. Foram feitas as determinações das porcentagens de matéria orgânica e a análise granulométrica. ▼ Rare-element granitic pegmatites are common hosts to economic deposits of rare metals, including Li, Ta, and rare-earth elements, which are increasing in economic importance due to advancing technology. Gahnite (ZnAlâ‚‚Oâ‚„) occurs as an accessory mineral in metamorphosed massive sulfide deposits (MMSDs) and some rare-element granitic pegmatites, including those with rare-metal mineralization, but detailed chemical studies of gahnite in these rocks are very scarce. In this study, gahnite from twenty-four granitic pegmatites and the Broken Hill-type Nine Mile MMSD, Australia, was analyzed for major and trace element chemical compositions to determine the relative degree of evolution of the pegmatites and identify chemical differences between Li-rich and Li-poor pegmatites and between these and MMSDs. In the spinel ternary diagram in terms of mol % gahnite (Ghn), hercynite (Hc), and spinel (Spl) end-members, the compositions of gahnite from the pegmatites fall within the previously defined pegmatite field and are given by: Ghnâ‚‡â‚€.â‚†â‚ƒâ‚‹â‚‰â‚ˆ.â‚„â‚ˆHcâ‚€.â‚‰â‚…â‚‹â‚‚â‚ˆ.â‚†â‚�Splâ‚€.â‚€â‚€â‚‹â‚„.â‚…â‚‚. Gahnite from the Nine Mile deposit (Ghnâ‚…â‚….â‚†â‚‚â‚‹â‚‡â‚†.â‚€â‚†Hcâ‚�â‚‡.â‚„â‚‡â‚‹â‚ƒâ‚‡.â‚ƒâ‚„Splâ‚ƒ.â‚ˆâ‚�â‚‹â‚�â‚€.â‚‡â‚ƒ) falls within the MMSD field characterized by compositions that reach higher Mg and lower Zn contents compared to gahnite from granitic pegmatites. Gahnite from the LCT (lithium, cesium, tantalum) family, rare-element class, beryl-columbite-phosphate subtype and LCT family, muscovite-rare element class, Li subclass granitic pegmatites of the Comechingones (Blanca Dora, Juan RomaÌ�n, Magdalena, La Ona, and Sin Nombre pegmatites) and Conlara (Nancy pegmatite) pegmatite districts, Pampean Pegmatite Province, Argentina, was analyzed in detail. The chemical composition of gahnite from these pegmatites is defined by the ranges Ghnâ‚‡â‚ˆ.â‚„â‚‰â‚‹â‚‰â‚€.â‚ƒâ‚…Hcâ‚‰.â‚€â‚‡â‚‹â‚‚â‚€.â‚…â‚‚Splâ‚€.â‚‚â‚…â‚‹â‚ƒ.â‚ƒâ‚‡. Gahnite from the Nancy pegmatite has higher Mg and Mn contents than gahnite from the Comechingones pegmatites. Chemical zoning within gahnite crystals is characterized by an increase in Zn (~2.8 wt.% ZnO) and a decrease in Fe (~2.6 wt.% FeO) from core to rim, reflecting the evolution of the pegmatite melt via simple fractional crystallization. Plots of molecular Fe vs. Zn and Fe+Mg vs. Zn+Mn and Zn/Fe ratios in gahnite display the diadochy and the relative degree of fractionation of the pegmatites. The Zn/Fe ratios range from 3.82 to 9.96. Based on all these parameters, the relative degree of evolution of the pegmatites increases in the order: Sin Nombre [arrow to] Magdalena [arrow to] Juan RomaÌ�n [arrow to] Blanca Dora [arrow to] Nancy [arrow to] La Ona. ▼ The Central American Land Bridge is the crucial connection between North and South America, and the Miocene closure of the Panama seaway led to a change in global oceanic circulation patterns. Modern Costa Rica is part of the island arc that formed over the western Caribbean subduction zone, and the Santa Elena peninsula is on the northwest coast of Costa Rica next to the Sandino forearc basin. This study focuses on the origin and provenance of the Paleocene deep water Rivas and Descartes turbidites that crop out on the northern part of the Santa Elena peninsula in northwestern Costa Rica. Understanding the sedimentary fill of the Sandino Basin that contributed to the closing of the seaway may lead to a better understanding of the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene arcs. Provenance studies of the Santa Elena Peninsula turbidite sandstone bodies constrain the history of the paleogeography and tectonics of the region. Petrographic analyses of rock thin sections constrain source areas; geochemical analysis of individual detrital heavy minerals from rock samples give indications of sediment sources and tectonic setting during deposition. This study is a provenance analysis based on (i) semi-quantitative energy-dispersive spectrometry analysis of heavy minerals, (ii) quantitative wavelength-dispersive spectrometry for major elements of detrital clinopyroxene and spinel grains, (iii) trace element analysis through laser ablation of single detrital clinopyroxene grains, and (iv) comparative analysis of the different potential source rocks to clearly identify the most likely sediment sources. The detrital spinel and clinopyroxene are possibly sourced from: mantle ophiolites, mid-ocean ridge gabbros, or volcanic arc tholeiitic basalts or calc-alkaline andesites. Spinel and clinopyroxne geochemistry suggests a possible peridotitic source, linked to mantle rocks that are now covered by Tertiary volcanic rocks or have completely eroded. The character of the crustal minerals indicates sources from mid-ocean ridge gabbros, and island arc tholeiites and andesites. This suggests that during the early history of the gateway uplift and seaway closure, sediment sources were dominated first by older ophiolites and gabbroic sources, then by volcanic inputs from the arc. ▼ [eng] In this work, 508 soil profiles of Balearic Islands (European Mediterranean region) were investigated, and the variability in the levels of major elements (Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, K, Na i P), trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb i Zn) and some soil properties (sands, silts, clays, calcium carbonate equivalent -CCE-, organic carbon, pH and cation exhange capacity) was examined. Sampling sites with minimal antrhropogenic influence were selected and soil profile samples were analysed for major and trace element content. The soil samples were collected from every horizon in each profile and the samples were digested using aqua regia and microwave oven for pseudo-total trace elements. The median concentrations of trace elements (mg kg-1) obtained in surface horizons were: As 15.8, Cd 0.42, Co 9.6, Cr 57.3, Cu 18.7, Mn 467.1, Ni 29.3, Pb 18.7, Zn 53.9. The results obtained from the statistical analysis reveal significant correlations between most elements and CCE, clay and organic matter contents, indicating that metal concentrations are controlled by soil composition. The trace element concentration is relatively low in areas of high CCE, therefore carbonate concentration in soil is the determining factor in the presence and distribution of trace elements in the soils of the studied area. According to depth, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn and Zn show an increase with depth, in the same way of clays and pH. As, Co, Cr and Ni do not show statistical differencies between horizons. A clear distinction was found between the metal content of the soils developed in each Reference Soil Group: Over limestones, poor-developed soils show the lowest concentrations of trace elements while well-developed soils have the highest concentrations. In ascending order of concentration, the lowest content correspond to Arenosols of litoral dune systems, followed by Cambisols over marls, Calcisols, Cambisols over marls and, finally, Luvisols as most differenciated tipologies and with higher trace element contents. On the other hand, over Keuper olivinic rocks soils with high concentrations of P, Fe, Co, Cr, Mn and Ni and low concentrations of Cd are developed. The background concentration and reference values have also been stablished. ▼ Oil sands tailings are comprised of sands, silts, clays, and process-affected water (OSPW). The latter includes high concentrations of dissolved ions, as well as organic contaminants, making the water toxic to aquatic organisms. In Northern Alberta, tailings ponds are being constructed on glacial till, overlying sand channel aquifers, establishing a potential hydraulic connection between the pond and downstream water systems. However, to date, no targeted attempts have been made to characterize the biogeochemical evolution and end products as tailings pond OSPW infiltrates into glacial till prior to reaching these aquifers, thus overlooking a key component of the contaminant transport pathway. Addressing this knowledge gap is a critical step towards protecting aquatic resources. Cation exchange capacity, exchangeable cation, batch sorption and radial diffusion cell experiments and supporting geochemical simulations were conducted: a) to assess the potential for release (or attenuation) of trace elements and major ions from glacial tills when exposed to OSPW; and b) to identify the principal geochemical processes involved in controlling pore water and sediment chemistry. The experiments revealed that sediment-bound cations available for exchange, consisted of Ca>Mg>K>NH4>Na; while the mean cation exchange capacity in the till (Methylene Blue method) was 4.7±2.7meq 100g-1. Results further indicate that the ingress and interaction of OSPW with the glacial till sediment-pore water system will result in: the mitigation of incoming sodium by ion exchange with sediment-bound calcium and magnesium, followed by limited precipitation of calcium and magnesium carbonates; sulfate reduction and subsequent sulfide precipitation; and biodegradation of organic carbon. High concentrations of OSPW chloride (~375mg L-1) are expected to persist. Ion exchange, oxidation-reduction, and mineral phase reactions including reductive dissolution of metal oxyhydroxides influenced trace metal mobility, which is similar to previous observations within sandy aquifer settings. Furthermore, though several trace elements showed the potential for release, large-scale mobilization is not supported. Understanding the environmental impact of tailings seepage is of great importance in managing water resources in Alberta. The present research offers a scientific basis to guide future remediation and reclamation strategies, seepage management schemes, and development of compliance legislation, and is therefore anticipated to have industry-wide benefit.

▼ Comprendre le fonctionnement hydrochimique de la Zone Critique reste un enjeu fort de ces décennies, notamment en ce qui concerne les interactions entre les cycles de l’eau, du carbone et de l’azote. Le bassin versant agricole du Montoussé à Auradé (Gers) soumis à des fortes pressions anthropiques et climatiques sur ces cycles, est l’un des dispositifs pérennes d’observation à long terme de l’infrastructure de recherche OZCAR, en charge de surveiller la zone critiques en milieu agricole. Ce bassin versant carbonaté est soumis à une climat semi-aride marqué par une forte évapotranspiration et des périodes de hautes eaux en hiver et au printemps, caractéristiques confirmées par les signatures isotopiques de l’eau. Une analyse des variations temporelles des eaux des précipitations atmosphériques et des eaux du ruisseau, à long- (sur 15 et 30 ans), moyen- (annuel et saisonnier) et court-terme (journalier et nycthéméral), et à haute fréquence (10mn) a mis en évidence : (i) l’origine des éléments dans les précipitations ; (ii) l’effet de l’augmentation des débits et de la fréquence des crues sur la diminution des concentrations en éléments majeurs, (iii) K et COD comme indicateurs de l’érosion des matières organiques des sols, favorisées par une amélioration des pratiques agricoles et une augmentation des températures; (iv) les processus de précipitation de la calcite, de nitrification, d’évapotranspiration et de prélèvement par la végétation. Une analyse spatiale de la composition chimique des eaux des ruisseaux du bassin versant, couplée aux signatures isotopiques de C et N, a permis de préciser les sources d’éléments, les processus en jeu tant hydrologiques que géochimiques associés aux perturbations de l’altération. Le découpage des hydrogrammes de crue, les relations concentration-débit et l’analyse des isotopes stables (δ15N, δ17O et δ18O) ont permis de mettre en évidence un contrôle des nitrates par des processus de dénitrification, une voie préférentielle de transfert des ions dans l’écoulement hypodermique, alors que les matières en suspensions (MES) sont transportées par le ruissellement. La contribution des crues aux flux exportés représente 93% pour les MES et 30-47% pour les éléments majeurs dissous. Les bilans nets (entrée-sortie) des éléments majeurs exportés sont très dépendants des quantité d’eau drainées. L’export des éléments majeurs se situe dans la moyenne des bassins versants du Sud-Ouest de la France tandis que les flux de MES sont similaires à ceux de bassins versants semi-arides du Maghreb. Enfin, l’apport de fertilisants azotés contribue à acidifier les sols, modifie la dissolution naturelle des carbonates et augmente l’altération chimique, induisant une perte de CO2 consommé de l’ordre de 15% au regard d’une dissolution naturelle des carbonates. Les sols du bassin versant du Montoussé ne sont pas en équilibre, puisque l’érosion mécanique est en moyenne deux fois supérieure à l’altération chimique. ▼ The origin of compositional gaps in volcanic deposits remains controversial. In Akaroa Volcano (9.6 to 8.6 Ma), New Zealand, a dramatic compositional gap exists between basaltic and trachytic magmas. Previously, the formation of more evolved magmas has been ascribed to crustal melting. However, the interpretation of new major and trace element analysis from minerals and bulk-rocks coupled with the mechanics of crystal-liquid separation offers an alternative explanation that alleviates the thermal restrictions required for crustal melting models. In a two-stage model, major and trace element trends can be reproduced by polybaric crystal fractionation from dry melts (less than 0.5 wt.% H2O) at the QFM buffer. In the first stage, picritic basalts are separated from an olivine-pyroxene dominant mush near the crust-mantle boundary (9 to 10 kbar). Ascending magmas stagnated at mid-crustal levels (5 to 6 kbar) and fractionated an olivine-plagioclase assemblage to produce the alkali basalt-hawaiite trend. In the second stage, trachyte melt is extracted from a crystal mush of hawaiite to mugearite composition at mid-to-upper crustal levels (3 to 5 kbar) after the melt has crystallised 50 vol.%. The fractionated assemblage of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene, magnetite, and apatite is left in a cumulate residue which corresponds to the mineral assemblage of sampled ultramafic enclaves. The results of trace element modelling of Rayleigh fractionation using this extraction window is in close agreement with the concentrations measured in trachyte (= liquid) and enclaves (= cumulate residue). The compositional gap observed in the bulk-rock data of eruptive products is not recorded in the feldspar data, which show a complete solid solution from basalt and co-magmatic enclaves to trachyte. Complexly zoned plagioclases further suggest episodical magma recharge events of hotter, more mafic magmas, which lead to vigorous convection and magma mixing. In summary, these models indicate that the Daly Gap of Akaroa Volcano formed by punctuated melt extraction from a crystal mush at the brittle-ductile transition.

Since their emplacement, and downfaulted. the basalts have been extensively eroded The present morphology reflects the erosional and depositional processes of prehistoric Lake Bonneville. Twelve samples were analyzed chemically for major oxides, trace elements, and rare-earth elements. The basalts form a hypersthene normative series ranging from olivine tholeiite to tholeiite. Based on chemical data, the basalts form three distinct groups. Comparison of the major oxides shows two of the groups forming a differentiation sequence separate from the third group. Trace element and rare-earth element data indicate that the three chemical groups are related to a common source but that two batches of magma probably emanated from this source. Pyrolite, spinel lherzolite, and garnet lherzolite were evaluated as hypothetical mantle materials from which a parent magma might be derived through partial melting. Based on rare-earth element profiles, garnet lherzolite appears to be the most likely source material for deriving the basalts. The trace element and rare-earth element data do not show any anomalies that would suggest contamination from crustal material. Comparison of chemical data shows that the Curlew Valley basalts are genetically similar to basalts from the Kelton and Rozel Point-Black Mountain areas, southwest and southeast of the study area, respectively. The Curlew Valley basalts are chemically similar to olivine tholeiites from the Snake River Plain and Blackfoot Reservoir areas in Idaho, but they do not show much similarity to basalts near Snowville, Utah, northeast of the study area. ▼ The management and disposal of huge volumes of coal combustion by products such as fly ash has constituted a major challenge to the environment. In most cases due to the inadequate alternative use of coal fly ash, the discarded waste is stored in holding ponds, slag heaps, or stock piled in ash dumps. This practice has raised concerns on the prospect of inorganic metals release to the surface and groundwater in the vicinity of the ash dump. Acceptable scientific studies are lacking to determine the best ash disposal practices. Moreover, knowledge about the mobility patterns of inorganic species as a function of mineralogical association or pH susceptibility of the dry disposed ash dump under natural weathering conditions are scarce in the literature. Fundamental understanding of chemical interactions of dry disposed ash with ingressed CO2 from atmosphere, percolating rain water and brine irrigation within ash disposal sites were seen as key areas requiring investigation. The mineralogical association of inorganic species in the dry disposed ash cores can be identified and quantified. This would provide a basis for understanding of chemical weathering, mineralogical transformations or mobility patterns of these inorganic species in the dry ash disposal scenario. The current study therefore aims to provide a comprehensive characterisation of weathered dry disposed ash cores, to reveal mobility patterns of chemical species as a function of depth and age of ash, with a view to assessing the potential environmental impacts. Fifty-nine samples were taken from 3 drilled cores obtained respectively from the 1 year, 8 year and 20-year-old sections of sequentially dumped, weathered, dry disposed ash in an ash dump site at Tutuka - a South African coal burning power station. The core samples were characterized using standard analytical procedures viz: X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) techniques, Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and Acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) test. A modified sequential extraction (SE) method was used in this study. The chemical partitioning, mobility and weathering patterns in 1 year, 8 year and 20-year-old sections of the ash dump were respectively investigated using this modified sequential extraction scheme. The sequence of the extractions was as follows: (1) water soluble, (2) exchangeable, (3) carbonate, (4) iron and manganese and (5) residual. The results obtained from the 5 steps sequential extraction scheme were validated with the total metal content of the original sample using mass balance method. The distribution of major and trace elements in the different liquid fractions obtained after each step of sequential extraction of the 59 drilled core samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). ▼ En Guinée, la disponibilité des ressources en eau est soumise à de graves problèmes de gestion avec des conséquences importantes pour les populations, notamment à Kankan où la plupart des puits tarissent pendant la saison sèche, et où la fourniture régulière de l’eau à partir de la rivière Milo n'est pas assurée dans tous les quartiers de la ville. Le Milo et son bassin versant représente donc un enjeu important pour les habitants de cette ville. Le Milo (480 km de long) qui draine un bassin versant 13 810 km2 est le plus important des affluents rive droite du Niger. Pour évaluer l’impact du bassin versant du Milo et de la ville de Kankan sur la qualité des eaux et des sédiments de ce cours d’eau, 30 échantillons de sédiments de fond ont été prélevés au cours d’une première campagne (juin-juillet 2013) sur l’ensemble des cours d’eau du bassin versant, tandis que durant une deuxième campagne (avril 2014-mai 2015), un suivi régulier a été mis en place sur le Milo en amont et en aval de Kankan. Au cours de cette dernière, 232 échantillons d’eau du Milo (dont 116 utilisés pour l’isotopie), et 26 échantillons de sédiments de fond ont été prélevés sur les stations de Bordo (amont de Kankan) et de Karifamoriah (aval de Kankan). Les concentrations en éléments majeurs et traces, terres rares, COP, COD, pH, alcalinité, l’azote organique, les isotopes de l’oxygène et de l’hydrogène, ainsi que la micro-granulométrie des sédiments ont été mesurés. Les résultats obtenus durant le cycle hydrologique 2014-2015 ont permis d’estimer le flux de matières exportées en solution par le Milo à Kankan à 47 863 t.an-1 et le flux de matières particulaires à 76 759 t.an-1. 92% de ce tonnage est exporté durant la période des hautes eaux. Ces flux permettent d’estimer des vitesses moyennes d’érosion physique (8 t.km-2.an-1) et d’altération chimique (5 t.km-2.an-1) du bassin relativement faibles. Le flux spécifique de CO2 consommé par l’altération chimique est lui aussi relativement faible (76.103 mole.km-2.an-1), mais il reste dans la moyenne des flux de CO2 mesurés sur les bassins couverts de sols latéritiques. Le degré de contamination des sédiments et sa variation spatio-temporelle ont été évalués grâce au calcul du facteur d’enrichissement (FE), en normalisant les concentrations en éléments traces par rapport à Al, Sc et Ti et en prenant le PAAS et l’UCC comme matériaux de référence. La quasi-totalité des éléments traces proviennent essentiellement des processus d’altération et sont d’origine naturelle. Toutefois, un enrichissement modéré à significatif (5 < FE < 20) a été mis en évidence pour Zr et Hf (enrichissements naturels) et As et Sb (impacts anthropiques). Finalement, l’apport anthropique en éléments traces, quand il existe, reste modéré. Les profils de concentrations en terres rares ont permis de montrer que la signature géochimique des sédiments de fond du Milo est homogène sur l’ensemble du bassin et caractéristique des sols latéritiques, non perturbée par la ville de Kankan et elle est proche des signatures du PAAS et de l’UCC.… Advisors/Committee Members: Probst, Jean-Luc (thesis director), Sidibe, Kaba (thesis director).

▼ The quartz dioritic Quottoon Igneous Complex (QIC) is a major Paleogene (65-56 Ma) magmatic body in NW British Columbia and SE Alaska that was emplaced along the Coast shear zone (CSZ). The QIC contains two different igneous suites that provide information about source regions, magmatic processes and evolving tectonic regimes that changed from a dominantly convergent to a dominantly strike-slip regime between 65 to 55 Ma. Heterogeneous suite I rocks (e. g. along Steamer Passage) have a pervasive solid-state fabric, abundant mafic enclaves and dikes, metasedimentary screens, and variable color indices (25-50). The homogeneous suite II rocks (e. g. along Quottoon Inlet) have a weak (to absent) fabric developed in the magmatic state (aligned feldspars, melt filled shears), and more uniform color indices (24-34) than in suite I. Suite I rocks have Sr concentrations <750 ppm, avg. LaN/YbN = 10.4, and initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios that range from 0.70513 to 0.70717. The suite II rocks have Sr concentrations >750 ppm, avg. LaN/YbN = 23.1, and initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios that range from 0.70617 to 0.70686. This study proposes that the parental QIC magma (initial 87Sr/86Sr = 0.706) can be derived bypartial melting of an amphibolitic source reservoir at lower crustal conditions. Geochemical data (Rb, Sr, Ba and LaN/YbN) and initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios preclude linkages between the two suites by fractional crystallization or assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) processes. The suite I rocks are interpreted to be the result of magma mixing between the QIC parental magma and a mantle derived magma. The samples do not lie along a single mixing line due to continued evolution through fractional crystallization/AFC processes subsequent to magma mixing. The suite II rocks may be generated by AFC. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio data suggests that similar processes to those that affected the QIC may also have operated during the generation of other portions of the Great Tonalite Sill of southeast Alaska. The present work is focused on the study of the biogeochemical cycles of major and trace metals in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. Atmospheric deposition (wet and dry) and aerosol samples were collected at background areas and urban locations in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, along with sediment trap samples at two different depths. Crustal originated elements (Al, Ca, Fe and Mn) were exclusively found in coarse particles (82-89%), while anthropogenic aerosol species (V, Cu, Cd and Pb) were associated with fine particles (59-70%). Simultaneous measurements of PM₁ and PM₁₀ can highlight natural contributions, since PM₁ is closely related to anthropogenic aerosol and thus better represent the anthropogenic particle fraction. During the warm season no significant difference in PM₁ between urban and natural locations was observed, highlighting the role of long-range transport. On the other hand local anthropogenic sources dominated during the cold season. Thus the seasonal variations for elements of anthropogenic origin presented maximum values during the heating period for urban cities, while during the warm period for natural background. Crustal originated elements denoted higher concentrations and larger variations associated with intense sporadic peaks of mineral dust during spring and autumn in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, whereas during spring and summer in the Western, when the air mass trajectories originated from remote regions. Mineral matter is the major component of PM₁₀ particles at both Western (22%) and Eastern Mediterranean Basin (38%). Crustal elements can account for 36-46% of total PM₁₀ mass in both sites in Athens, related to the frequent occurrence of Saharan dust transport to the Eastern Mediterranean and to dust resuspension due to vehicle circulation. Dust from local sources (mainly resuspension) contributed also significantly to the local PM₁₀ mass (up to 33%) and 3-4% in PM₁ particles. The role of atmospheric deposition was further examined based on the atmospheric and seawater fluxes of various anthropogenic and teriggenious elements in both the Eastern Mediterranean Basin and the Black Sea. Atmospheric deposition is sufficient to balance major and trace metals, in both particulate and soluble forms, to the seawater of the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. For elements V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb atmospheric deposition supplied 67-158% of the fluxes measured in the water column of the Cretan Sea. Correspondingly, from the surface towards the deeper water layers of the Black Sea 43-226% and 38-179% of Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb fluxes were provided by wet and dry atmospheric deposition, demonstrating its predominant role as an external source of major and trace metals in the areas studied.

O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a influência de esgotos domésticos e petroquímicos, dispostos por via de emissário submarino, nas composições físico-químicas e microbiológicas da coluna dágua e na geoquímica dos sedimentos, bem como investigar uma possível relação entre o meio e a composição química das carapaças do foraminífero Ammonia tepida. Para atingir tal objetivo foram coletadas 10 amostras de água e de sedimento superficial, no entorno dos emissários do Araçá e do Terminal Petrolífero Almirante Barroso (TEBAR), além de um ponto controle, no canal de São Sebastião, SP, em março e abril de 2007. Em cada amostra de água foram realizadas análises físico-químicas e microbiológicas. Nos sedimentos, foram realizadas análises granulométricas e geoquímicas (macronutrientes, elementos maiores e traços). Do sedimento, carapaças coradas (indivíduos vivos) e não coradas (mortos) de A. tepida foram triadas e analisadas em espectrômetros de energia dispersiva (MEV-EDS) e de emissão atômica (ICP-OES) para análise química dos elementostraços. Os resultados das análises físico-químicas e microbiológicas da água, indicaram que a coluna dágua não estava contaminada, no momento da amostragem, pois todos os valores obtidos estavam dentro dos limites exigidos pela resolução do CONAMA, nº 357/2005. Os resultados granulométricos mostraram que o sedimento é litoclástico e mais psamítico no Araçá, e mais pelítico, no TEBAR. Já os dados geoquímicos de carbono orgânico, nitrogênio, enxofre e fósforo revelaram que ambas as regiões são propícias ao enriquecimento desses elementos. A concentração de elementos-traço, na maioria dos pontos estudados, nas duas áreas, quando comparada aos valores guia de causaefeito, não foi considerada tóxica para a biota marinha. Contudo, foi observado enriquecimento significativo de cádmio, em certas áreas no Araçá, e de bário, no TEBAR. A concentração deste último elemento, provavelmente, está relacionada à água de produção do terminal. Os elementos-traço das carapaças de A. tepida coradas, em ambos os emissários, apresentaram maior número de correlações significativas com o sedimento, sugerindo que carapaças de foraminíferos mortos estão mais susceptíveis ao viés dos processos diagenéticos. No TEBAR, foram observadas correlações significativas positivas entre os teores de Co, Cr, Mn e Pb nos sedimentos e os elementos-traço das carapaças coradas. Já no Araçá, somente os teores de Cr correlacionaram-se positiva e significativamente aos teores encontrados nas carapaças coradas. Isto corrobora com a influência da composição do sedimento nas reações intracelulares dos foraminíferos, refletidas na construção do exoesqueleto. Diante do exposto, os resultados deste estudo trouxeram luz a novas questões que permitiram inferir que a auto-depuração da água do mar, em ambas as regiões, e a estação de tratamento de efluentes, no TEBAR, não se revelaram eficientes na diluição e/ou remoção do conteúdo de nutrientes, matéria orgânica e elementos maiores e traço.

▼ In this PhD work the utilization of the NORM - metal association and the application of a radiological model (ERICA) to estimate radionuclide and metal dispersion in the marine sediment, was performed. Thus, the affected area due to the anthropogenic activities was determined. Except for the spatial investigation, the marine area was also studied in a temporal aspect. The combination of the estimated sedimentation rates with the mass flux determination, lead to a well-determined time scale. Therefore, the acquired data was verified by historical records of the area. To conclude, in this work a methodology has been established to study natural radioactivity (NORM) near metal mining areas, to assess the mining activities in the area and to verify their impact on coastal areas, using chronological records. The established methodology was tested in two cases: an ongoing mining area (Stratoni, Ierissos Gulf) and an abandoned one (Oxygono Bay, Lavrio). The first has been for the last decades, a subject of investigation concerning environmental contamination due to the mining activities and waste deposits including mine tailings, flotation tailings, metallurgical slags, waste rock and pyrite concentrate stockpiles. The latter was influenced by the intensive mining and metallurgical activities over the past 100 years, which resulted in the production of huge volumes of wastes (e.g. slags, tailings) and their deposition in piles around Lavrio area, near the coastline or dumped into the sea. For this reason surface seabed sediments, water samples and sediment cores were collected from the marine environment in order to investigate spatially and temporally the impact of the mining activities. A method for assessing the distribution of contamination due to the enrichment of metals and radionuclides in the sediment was introduced. In the spatial study surface sediments were collected for the determination of natural radioactivity, major elements and trace metals. Their measurements were held in the laboratory by means of gamma-ray spectrometry and X-ray spectroscopy, while the results were combined with in situ gamma-ray measurements in the seawater, using the NaI system KATERINA. The trace metals concentrations were used for the assessment of enrichment in the sediments. The radioactivity concentrations were utilized for the enhanced NORM study and the estimation of the sediment-water coefficient Kd, useful for the dose rate assessment in the biota incorporated in the ERICA Assessment Tool. Possible correlations between trace metals, radionuclides and other parameters such as granulometry and mineralogy, were also investigated using a standard statistical software package (SPSS). To complete the spatial investigation, the dispersion of natural radionuclides (226Ra, 235U) was estimated using a simplified generic model incorporated in ERICA and the affected area due to mining was determined. ▼ Millions of tonnes of fly ash are generated worldwide every year to satisfy the large demand for energy. Management of this fly ash has been a concern and various approaches for its beneficial use have been investigated. Over the last two decades, there has been intensive research internationally that has focused on the use of different sources of fly ash for zeolite synthesis.However, most of the studies have concentrated on class C fly ash and very few have reported the use of South African class F fly ash as feedstock for zeolite synthesis.Class F fly ash from South Africa has been confirmed to be a good substrate for zeolite synthesis due to its compositional dominance of aluminosilicate and silicate phases. However, because differences in quartz-mullite/glass proportions of fly ash from different sources produces impure phases or different zeolite mineral phases under the same activation conditions, the present study focused on optimization of synthesis conditions to obtain pure phase zeolite Na-P1 from class F South African coal fly ash. Synthesis variables evaluated in this study were; hydrothermal treatment time (12 - 48 hours), temperature (100 – 160 °C) and addition of varying molar quantities of water during the hydrothermal treatment step (H2O:SiO2 molar ratio ranged between 0 - 0.49).Once the most suitable conditions for the synthesis of pure phase zeolite Na-P1 from fly ash were identified, a statistical approach was adopted to refine the experiments, that was designed to evaluate the interactive effects of some of the most important synthesis variables. In this case, the four synthesis variables; NaOH concentration (NaOH: SiO2 molar ratio ranged between 0.35– 0.71), ageing temperature (35 °C – 55 °C), hydrothermal treatment time (36 - 60 hours) and temperature (130 °C – 150 °C) were studied. The response was determined by evaluating the improvement in the cation exchange capacity of the product zeolite.The starting materials (fly ashes from Arnot, Hendrina and Duvha power stations) and the synthesized zeolite product were characterized chemically, mineralogically and morphologically by X-Ray fluorescence spectrometry, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Other characterization technique used in the study were Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to provide structural information and also monitor evolution of crystallinity during synthesis, as well as cation exchange capacity to determine the amount of exchangeable positively charged ions. Nitrogen adsorption was used to determine the surface area and porosity, and inductively coupled mass spectrometry for multi-elemental analysis of the post-synthesis supernatants.The results from the X-ray diffraction spectroscopy showed that the most pure zeolite Na-P1 phase was achieved when the molar regime was 1 SiO2 : 0.36 Al2O3 : 0.59 NaOH : 0.49 H2O and at synthesis conditions such that ageing was done at 47 °C for 48 hours while the hydrothermal treatment time and temperature was held at 48 hours… Advisors/Committee Members: Petrik, Leslie F (advisor).
