▼ In recent decades, the number of centenarians in developed countries has risen substantially as a result of improvements in quality of life and medical science (Robine and Caselli, 2005). The existence of this trend emphasizes the importance of accurately modelling extreme age survival probabilities. One recent development in this field is the threshold life table (TLT), due to Li, Hardy & Tan (2008). In the TLT model, from a sample or population of ages at death data, extreme value theory is used to make optimal use of the relatively small number of observations at high ages, while the traditional Gompertz distribution is assumed for earlier ages. In this thesis we use a high quality data set constructed by augmenting Netherlands population data from the Human Mortality Database (HMD) with a dataset provided by Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS), or Statistics Netherlands. The Human Mortality Database is a joint initiative of the Department of Demographics at the University of California, Berkeley and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. It provides detailed mortality and population data for 40 countries, including the Netherlands (Human Mortality Database, 2019). The HMD data set contains age and gender-specific death and number-alive counts from 1850-2016. The counts are given annually and thus interval censored; they are also right-censored at age 100. The CBS dataset consists of the ages at death (accurate to 1 day) of all Dutch residents aged 92 years or more whose year of death was between 1986 and 2015. To the combined data set as well as to the HMD data set alone, we fit two models: the threshold life table model as implemented in Li et al (2008), and a modified threshold life table model in which we incorporate a smoothing adjustment described in Section 3.4.2. From these models we estimate the highest attained age attained by members of the population or of cohorts within it and compare with the actual highest attained ages. We also compare the variance of fitted gammas and highest attained ages under the two models. We then use the smoothed threshold life table to value a theoretical annuity, and compare with valuations from the Heligman-Pollard as well as Coale-Kisker methods. Finally, we implement a dynamic adjustment for the smooth threshold life table and compare both the in-sample and out-of-sample sum of squared errors with those obtained from the Cairns-Blake-Dowd model.

▼ Although the association between marriage, health, and mortality at the individual level has been widely studied in the United States, less is known about marital status differences in population level indicators such as
life expectancy, survival, and Active
Life Expectancy (ALE), i.e. the number of years one can expect to spend free of major functional limitations. Population level information provides essential demographic descriptions of how
life chances are patterned by marital status. ALE in particular has the advantage of examining health and mortality concurrently as opposed to separately as in many previous studies. In the last century, fundamental shifts in family and health systems produced trends such as retreat from marriage, increasing marital instability, higher
life expectancies, and increases in chronic disease and functional limitations in the oldest part of the population. These trends underscore the importance of a continual examination of the relationship between marriage, health and mortality at the population level.
This dissertation uses a
life table approach to examine the population level consequences of marriage on health and survival by gender, age, and race. I analyze data from the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS), a nationally-representative study of persons age 50 and older which began in 1992 and are followed up until 2006. Overall, results indicate that marriage is an important social institution for population health. The benefits of marriage are apparent in higher
life expectancies and survival proportions. Although initial health status plays a significant role, married persons have lower prevalence of functional limitations and higher ALE. Experiencing marital dissolution in old age lowers
life expectancy and survival while experiencing remarriage transition improves
life expectancy and survival. Findings also show age, sex and race differences in the marriage benefits in
life expectancy and survival. Men gain more from marriage than women. Nevertheless, women also clearly benefit from marriage, lose from marital dissolution, and gain from remarriage. Marriage benefits tend to decrease with age for men and accumulate with age for women. There are similar benefits of marriage for Black and White men. However, the survival benefit of marriage is higher among Black than White women.

▼ After more than fifty years of being classified as innocuous, bed bug populations have experienced a global resurgence due to increased inticide resistance, pesticide regulatory changes and increased human travel. Though viewed as an acute medical and social problem, entomologists, pest management professionals and others are largely unprepared to manage them. As a result, there is much to be investigated about the development and survival, and control of bed bugs. This dissertation evaluates bed bug survival and development using a
life table approach, elucidates the efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi as a novel control for bed bug populations, and as an indicator of the general public’s ability to play a role in bed bug management, describes the current state of bed bug related knowledge and attitudes among Penn State resident assistants as well as there ability to be educated on the topic. Bed bug survival and development was studied by comparing the laboratory reared Harlan strain and the ECL-05 field strain of bed bugs and the hybrid crosses of those strains. Developmental differences were found between strains based on instar, and were found between the parental and F1 generations. While survival of Harlan and ECL-05 strain parental generation bed bugs was not significantly different (~207 and ~208 days respectively), there were significant differences in the mean survival of the F1 generation. Harlan F1 survived ~226 days, ECL-05 F1 survived ~236, Harlan females x ECL-05 males F1 survived ~243 days, and ECL-05 females x Harlan males F1 survived ~213 days. Subsequent experiments evaluated the survival of bed bugs reared on two different feeding regimens. Results indicate that human blood reared HS developed in 34.90 ± 5.428 days, which was significantly faster than rabbit blood fed HS (49.10 ± 16.884 days). There were no significant differences in human blood or rabbit blood reared ECL-05 developmental time (32.10 ± 3.638 days and 35.88 ±9.460 days respectively). Additionally, ECL-05 bed bugs reared on rabbit blood survived ~174 days, which was significantly longer than the ~153 days of the HS bed bugs. Next, we investigated the potential of Beauveria bassiana as a biopesticide against bed bugs. Results indicate that B. bassiana is effective regardless of bed bug sex, feeding status, and strain. However, bed bugs were more susceptible when placed on jersey cotton material compared to paper. Similarly, while all instars tested were susceptible to the fungus, first instars and adults died significantly faster than fifth instar bed bugs. Successful integrated pest management programming requires that all stakeholders understand pest problems and management options. Information derived from laboratory analyses was implemented into a bed bug education intervention to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of Penn State resident assistants. Data indicate that bed bug knowledge and attitudes of resident assistants can be positively affected by education interventions. These results add valued insight into the biology of…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Grape quality is important for the producer, exporter and the consumer. Consumers judge
table grapes according to their size, colour, taste and shelf
life. The consumer’s prerequisites will influence the producer. Therefore, it is essential to know how the
table grape berry develops so that it can be manipulated, favouring the postharvest quality and shelf
life.
This study was performed on Prime and Crimson Seedless, both grafted onto Ramsey, in the Paarl district of South Africa. The aim of this study was to describe and quantify
table grape berry development and compositional changes taking place throughout growth and ripening. The effect of sugar:acid ratio on postharvest shelf
life was also evaluated.
To evaluate whether berry size influenced the measured development parameters, three berry sizes were induced for both cultivars by using plant bioregulators such as gibberellic acid (GA3) and forchlorfenuron – synthetic cytokinin (CPPU) or girdling. The following sizes were obtained for Prime: (i) small berries (<20 mm) with no treatment, which acted as the control; (ii) medium berries (20-24 mm) obtained by 15 ppm GA3 application at 8 mm berry size; (iii) large berries (>24 mm) obtained by combination of 15 ppm GA3 and 1 ppm CPPU application at 8 mm berry size. Crimson Seedless berry sizes were as follows: (i) small berries (<18 mm) with no treatment, which acted as the control; (ii) medium berries (18-22 mm) treated with 10 ppm GA3 at 7 mm berry size; (iii) large berries (>22 mm) treated with 10 ppm GA3 and vines were girdled at 7 mm berry size. To evaluate the effect of sugar:acid ratio on postharvest shelf
life, grapes were stored for five weeks at -0.5 ˚C and another week at 7.5˚C. The bunches were evaluated for loose berries, browning, soft tissue breakdown, decay and berry split.
The following components were analysed for both cultivars to determine changes in berry composition throughout the season: berry fresh weight, total soluble solids (TSS), glucose, fructose, titratable acidity (TA), tartaric acid, malic acid, abscisic acid (ABA) and total phenols. Total and individual anthocyanins were analysed for Crimson Seedless.
Differences were obtained for the three berry sizes for both cultivars. Véraison, representing the start of ripening, started at the same time in successive seasons: 21 days after pea size berry (5 mm berry diameter) for Prime and 28 days after pea size berry (5 mm berry diameter) for Crimson Seedless. A lag stage was not observed, at seven day sampling intervals, for either of the cultivars.
Components such as TSS, glucose, fructose and TA content per berry were influenced by berry size in either one or in both seasons for both cultivars. Significant changes in component concentration were detected at the start of, or around véraison. Sugar concentrations (TSS) already started to increase for both cultivars before the start of véraison. At véraison, concentrations of glucose, fructose and ABA increased while concentrations of TA, tartaric acid, malic acid and total…

▼ This complex of sugarcane borers, in Brazil, comprises Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) and Diatraea flavipennella (Box) (Lepidoptera.: Crambidae). The control of borers, in Brazil, is the applied biological control using the larval endoparasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Cam.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Recently, however, the biological control of D. flavipennella by the C. flavipes has been in discussion due to increasing occurrence of this borer species in the sugarcane fields across the northeast of Brazil. Thus, this study investigated the parasitism behavior of the parasitoid C. flavipes towards D. flavipennella side by side to D. saccharalis as well as determined its fertility life table parasitizing both hosts to clearify about this question. The parasitism behavior included free choice and host finding tests with and without visual cues, using arena in the laboratory. Larvae of D. saccharalis and D. flavipennella were exposed to 24h-old C. flavipes females, mated and fed. The free choice test consisted of an arena containing larvae of both sugarcane borers andcontrasted parasitoid wasp emerged from each one. The host finding test was conducted in an arena designed to not allow visual cues to the wasps. The parasitoid wasp in both tests showed no parasitism preference toward a sugarcane borer species being able to find and parasitize both borers similarly. The fertility life table parameters for C. flavipes parasitizing D. saccharalis andD. flavipennella were estimated based on the development and the specific daily parasitism obtained in the laboratory. The results show that C. flavipes exhibited similar parasitism and fertility on both borers, but with longer mean generation time and lower cocoon viability parasitizing D. flavipennella. Based on the results of the parasitism behavior and fertility life tablewe conclude that the parasitism of C. flavipes on D. flavipennella was not compromised.
O controle dessas brocas, no Brasil, é a liberação do parasitóide Cotesia flavipes (Cam.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

O controle dessas brocas, no Brasil, é a liberação do parasitóide Cotesia flavipes (Cam.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).
This complex of sugarcane borers, in Brazil, comprises Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) and Diatraea flavipennella (Box) (Lepidoptera.: Crambidae). The host finding test was conducted in an arena designed to not…

▼ An Unnatural History is an installation that inhabits the space between the continuously shifting realms of science, pseudoscience and science fiction. This project documents the (fictional) discovery of a taxonomy of marine
life containing and cooperating with the elements from the periodic
table. As science and technology progress, we are constantly faced with redefining, reinterpreting and reconfiguring what we thought we knew about the world around us and previous scientific "facts" are revealed to have been constructed "beliefs." Using multiple modes of representation, An Unnatural History draws attention to the real, the imagined and what it means to visualize biological
life and phenomena that are often invisible to us at first glance.
You are invited to join the Institute of Aquatic Research, as together we make unbelievable discoveries deep within the oceans, collect empirical data and struggle to organize, classify and determine the meaning of our findings and our place within this system. It is my hope that this experience cracks the hard shell of certainty and if only for a moment, suspends you in a state of wonder and disbelief. The power of imagination should not be ignored. It is what gave
life to this idea that lay dormant with possibility and power.

▼ This thesis provides the beginnings of further research on the correlation between Nabataean mortuary practices and specific biological age ranges. It seeks to answer the question of whether Nabataean infants were absent from, or under-represented, in Nabataean cemeteries. Several quantitative analyses and descriptive statistics were performed, comparing Nabataean adult and subadult burials from fourteen sites. Nabataean cemetery populations were also compared with Walter Scheidel's model life table. These analyses demonstrate that Nabataean burials typically consisted of either a single adult or multiple individuals of various age ranges. Subadults, individuals under the age of 20 years, were rarely found buried by themselves, and seldom with other subadults. The comparison of Nabataean cemetery populations with Scheidel's model life table reported lower than expected percentages of individuals between the age ranges of zero to 12 years. However, this discrepancy is likely due to decay, the destruction of skeletal remains, and poor excavation techniques.

▼ Aedes albopictus is a vector of several arboviruses, including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. However, control of this day-active species is difficult with ultra-low volume treatments applied at dusk/dawn periods. Consequently, the impacts of an alternative method (residual barrier spray) used to control resting mosquito adults were evaluated. Eggs were collected from field study sites treated with Demand CS[registered] (pyrethroid adulticide) (active ingredient [AI]: lambda-cyhalothrin) plus Archer[registered] (insect growth regulator larvicide) (AI: pyriproxyfen) at pre-determined concentrations and
life table characteristics assessed in the laboratory. In a separate laboratory study, blood fed Ae. albopictus were exposed to Archer[registered] residue in glass bottles (to approximate contact from a barrier spray) and subsequently allowed to oviposit. Control mosquitoes were exposed to clean bottles. Mosquitoes were held in incubators at 28[degrees]C for the duration of the experiments. To evaluate potential dilution effects of water volume, mosquitoes were allowed to oviposit in (relatively) small (59 mL water) or large (177 mL water) containers. We characterized the extent to which fecundity (number of eggs laid), fertility rate (number of larvae hatched/number of eggs laid*100), and emergence rate (number of adults emerged/number of larvae hatched*100) differed between groups. In the control group, 18-21 (82-95%) mosquitoes laid eggs, while only 10-11 (45-50%) mosquitoes laid eggs in the group exposed to pyriproxyfen. Significantly lower (P=0.0008) fecundity was observed in mosquitoes exposed to pyriproxyfen (mean[plus-minus]SE) (small container: 25.2[plus-minus]7.1, large container: 24.3[plus-minus]7.1) compared to control mosquitoes (small container: 49.2[plus-minus]7.8, large container: 52.7[plus-minus]5.2). Regardless of treatment, no significant differences in fecundity were observed between mosquitoes allowed to oviposit in different sized containers. Hatch rate was significantly lower in the pyriproxyfen group and was impacted by size of container (P=0.032) and treatment (P< 0.0001) (large, control: 61.9% [plus-minus] 7.8; small, control: 38.0% [plus-minus] 7.1; large, treated: 10.3% [plus-minus] 2.4; small, treated: 2.9% [plus-minus] 1.9). Adult emergence rates were not significantly impacted by treatment or size of container. Pyriproxyfen applied as a barrier spray may be an effective tool for controlling Ae. albopictus and other peridomestic mosquitoes.

Net survival is a key indicator for measuring cancer control. By definition, it corresponds to the survival that would be observed in a hypothetical world where the cancer studied is the only possible cause of death. The main objective of this thesis was to show the interest of this indicator in the context of clinical research taking into account some methodological challenges that can be encountered. In this work, we have first presented the concept of net survival and its estimation methods. Subsequently, we were interested in some of the problems encountered in long-term clinical trials when the interest is in estimating net survival. We studied the impact of using the classic approach when estimating net survival in clinical trials, i.e. the cause-specific method in different configurations of misclassifications of the cause of death. The second objective of this thesis was to take into account the selection bias in terms of other causes mortality in the modeling of excess mortality, because of the noncomparability between patients from general population and those of clinical trials. We proposed an excess hazard model that corrects this type of selection bias. A third problem which is complementary to the second is to take into account the heterogeneity of patients in the different recruitment centers at the same time as the selection bias. This work proposes new tools which can help clinical research specialists to evaluate new…

▼ The population of the world is getting older. In 2010, worldwide, there were about 524 million people over the age of 65; by 2050, over 1.5 billion people will be in this age group. This shift in population will not affect only developed countries, however—much of this increase in the elderly population will occur in low- and middle-income countries. As populations age, low-income countries will need to invest in health care for older adults and in disease prevention programs to prevent or delay the onset of non-communicable diseases (such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer). Past research on population-level health in the developing world has been widely hindered by a lack of high-quality longitudinal data. My dissertation uses recently-collected longitudinal data to gain insight into overall trends in health in low- and middle-income contexts. My first chapter uses a multi-state life table approach to investigate the overall level of health and functional ability (the ability to carry out tasks of daily life) among the rural population in Malawi. I find that this population experiences a substantial burden of disability in later life, and that these high levels of disability greatly limit work efforts among older individuals. In my second chapter, I conduct a cross-national comparison of health and disability-free life expectancy using data from recent longitudinal surveys in Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the US. I find that current disability-free life expectancy at age 65 is comparable across these populations, though future trends are uncertain. My third chapter investigates how Malawi’s 2008 rollout of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) to rural clinics affected overall population health and mortality. I find that the introduction of ART led to substantial declines in mortality and an increase in adult life expectancy, and that population morbidity also decreased after the introduction of ART.

This study results from an internship at AXA on pensions payable under the workers compensation (WC) line of business. Pensions may be compulsorily recoverable (CR) (when there is less than 30% of disability and the pension amount per year is less than six times the minimal national salary) or not compulsorily recoverable (NCR).
Law defines that the mathematical provisions for CR pensions must be calculated by applying mortality table TD88/90 and interest rate 5.25%. To manage pensions NCR is more complex because technical bases are not legally defined and difficult computations are required. In particular, companies must predict the amount of payments discounted reflecting the mortality effect for all pensioners. Our purpose is thus to develop a stochastic model for the future mortality of the WC pensioners (Portuguese market workers and AXA portfolio).
The global model is split in: a stochastic model for population mortality which allows for forecasts, combined with point estimates from a portfolio mortality model obtained through three relational models (Cox Proportional, Brass Linear and Workgroup PLT). The one year death probabilities for ages 0-110, period 2013-2113, are obtained for general population and the portfolios. These probabilities are used to compute life table functions and the NCR reserves for each of the models for the pensioners, spouses and children under 25.
The results are compared…

Based on the results of the parasitism behavior and fertility life table we conclude that the parasitism of C. flavipes on D. flavipennella was not compromised
O controle dessas brocas, no Brasil, é a liberação do parasitóide Cotesia flavipes (Cam.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

The coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is a pest of coffee and is present in almost all countries producing the crop causing losses of US 500 million a year. Despite its importance, nothing is known about her key factor and critical stage of mortality. Therefor, the objective of this study was to determine the critical stage and the key factors of mortality of H. hampei. Data for the making of the life table were collected during five seasons between the months of December 2007 to March 2009 in six coffee plantations between Paula Cândido and Viçosa, MG. The mortalit data of H. hampei were collected weekly and grouped by season and stand, a total of 33 life tables. These 33 life tables were added and taken to mean data which led to an average life table, where the overall mortality was 70.81%. Among the stages of the life cycle of H. hampei, the highest mortality occurred in eggs (29.43%), followed by mortality of third instar larvae (22.22%), second instar larva (18.60%), pupa (18.11%), larva First instar (13.22%) and adults (8.06%) respectively.
Miconia calvescens (Melastomataceae) is a native plant of Central and South America that has become an aggressive invader of forest ecosystems in French Polynesian, Hawaii and Australia, where it was introduced as ornamental. Preliminary studies of insects species attacking this plant in Brazil identified Diclidophlebia smithi (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) as a potential agent for biological control of this weed. The present study provides a description of this new psyllid species and reports a series of studies concerning host specificity, biology and population fluctuation of D. smithi…

The aphids are limiting for various crops, and in the case of the horticulture crops, it has been a problem for the cultivation of Arracacia xanthorrhiza (Bancroft, 1825), the arracacha. This plant, of Andean origin, has been well adapted to these climatic conditions of Southeast Brazil and conquered many consumers, currently representing an important food source due to its taste and nutritional value, thus providing a considerable income to small farmers. It is largely cultivated in the South and Southeast regions in Brazil. Although this culture is considered rustic, aphids has been causing great damage to its development. In the present work, the influence of temperature on the development of Semiaphis dauci (Fabricius, 1775) and Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach, 1843) was studied. The nymphal development period of S. dauci and A. solani on A. xanthorrhiza was of 23.84 and 33.02 days at 10 C and 6.7 and 10.04 days at 25 C, respectively. The minimum thermal threshold of…

▼ The desire to still time, at once enduring and momentary, is the concern of my thesis work entitled
The Quiet Stir of Circumstance. I am interested in experiencing and capturing unmemorable objects and occurrences to contain and mark passing moments. It is in the everyday that the memory of a single instance - to touch, to hold, to release - becomes the tempo at which both making and living counter conclusiveness.
My choice of objects and material contain the impulse to be remembered. Clay is a material with this capacity, compressing process and time into a singular enduring moment. Objects that threaten to decay or go unnoticed, found in close relation to the
table or sites associated with making, are constructed from clay through the attentive process of touching and seeing. The act of touching wet clay, so often connected to the memory of a singular moment, instead becomes the desire to retain clays malleability, an act of suspending time. The overlooked become clear and present; reflecting the everyday back at us, although at a different pitch. These objects are playfully composed, as if scattered through a thinking mind, escaping clear beginnings or conclusions.
I am interested in creating sculptures that feel like they oppose the passage of time. It is through color, surface, craft and composition that I want the sculptures to slowly reveal and reward the act of looking and a feeling of stillness for a viewer; my initial feelings and experience in the cultivation of the piece itself.

▼ ‘Crimson Seedless’ grape is an economically important cultivar of table grapes with superior eating characteristics due to firmer berries, colour and good flavour. The aim of this research project was to investigate the influence of infection of mild isolates of grapevine leafroll associated viruses (GLRaV) 3, 5, 9 and grapevine virus A (GVA) on berry colour, texture, SSC, TA and SSC: acid ratio in ‘Crimson Seedless’ grapes during maturation, ripening and cold storage life and quality. The infection of GLRaV and GVA viruses in clone 3215 (LRV3 (E) + LRV3 (RT-PCR) + GVA + LRV9 + LRV5), clone 3236 + 3215 (LRV3 (E) + GVA + LRV9 + LRV5) reduced berry colour, SSC, SSC: acid ratio; improved berry springiness and gumminess without influencing acidity during maturation and ripening in comparison to virus free control. During cold storage, berries from viral infected clones 3236 + 3215 and 3215 showed improvement in berry colour and SSC and retained good quality until 140 days of storage but, there was no effect on acidity.Berry hardness, gumminess, springiness and cohesiveness were also higher in viral infected clone 3236 + 3215 and clone 3215 than virus free control during cold storage. In sensory evaluation, virus infected clones 3236 + 3215 and 3215 obtained higher scores for berry crispiness, flavour and overall acceptability during cold storage when compared to the virus free controls. In conclusion, the infection of mild isolates of GLRaV and GVA viruses reduced berry colour and SSC but, improved berry textural properties in clones 3236 + 3215 and 3215 of ‘Crimson Seedless’ grapes during maturation and ripening. The quality parameters such as berry colour, textural properties, SSC, TA and sensory scores also remained acceptable for these clones till 140 days cold storage at 0 ± 0.5 °C.

▼ The African mosquito Anopheles gambiae is the insect vector responsible for half of worldwide malaria infections. One option for reducing malaria is genetic manipulation of the vector. By creating transgenic mosquitoes incapable of spreading the malaria pathogen, the human-mosquito-human cycle of infection may be interrupted. In order for the engineered Plasmodium-refractory mosquitoes to be effective they need to be able to thrive in nature and to compete successfully with nontransformed conspecifics. Two lines of transgenic An. gambiae were used in this study to evaluate the fitness consequences of transgenesis in this insect.
Life table characteristics of two transformed An. gambiae lines were compared to a control line to determine if fitness costs were present. Specific traits measures between transgenic and control mosquitoes were not significantly different, and the transgenic lines had no evidence of position effects.

▼ The popular Kaplan-Meir estimator has traditionally been used to great effect as a survival function estimator. However, the Kaplan-Meir estimator is dependent upon a maximum likelihood parameter estimator which may not be the best estimator in all cases. We modify the Kaplan-Meir estimator, based on a Bayes parameter estimation, in hopes of providing a more accurate survival estimator for small sample sizes. Core elements of survival analysis are presented, acting as a foundation from which to construct and compare our modified Kaplan-Meir estimator. It is hypothesized that our modified Kaplan-Meir estimator is generally more accurate than the standard Kaplan-Meir estimator for smaller sample sizes, while the standard Kaplan-Meir estimator remains appropriate for larger sample sizes. Both Kaplan-Meir estimators are compared to theoretical distributions, with the traditional expectation that theoretical distributions will model data best if data can be fitted to a theoretical distribution. In order to show validity for our hypothesis one smaller data set and one larger data set were analyzed. The results of the analysis appeared to agree with our hypothesis.

Pentalonia nigronervosa, the banana aphid, (Hemiptera: Aphididae) vector-transmits Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV): the greatest constraint for banana (Musa sp.) crop production in Hawaii. Prior to 2010, Pentalonia caladii, the cardamom aphid, was regarded in synonymy with P. nigronervosa, therefore, earlier studies of Pentalonia aphids may not accurately reflect the true nature of each species. This research compares the life history, colonization ability and transmission competence of genotypically distinct P. nignonervosa and P. caladii asexual lineages collected from taro, heliconia, red ginger and banana using banana leaf discs or plants. Life history and developmental parameters were similar for both species when reared on banana leaf discs, but P. caladii from taro colonized banana plants with difficulty. All lineages of P. caladii vectored BBTV in leaf disc transmission assays, but only the P. caladii lineage from taro and P. nigronervosa from banana were able to vector BBTV to plantlets.

The Tunisian scale insect fauna (Hemiptera: Coccoidea), is among the poorly studied fauna in the world. Actually, populations of some species have increased to pest status in many crops and the black scale Parlatoria ziziphi Lucas (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) is one of the most important insect pests attacking citrus crop in Tunisia. In the current study, a revision of the scale insect fauna occurring on citrus in Tunisia was done based on the results of field surveys and literature review. Moreover, effects of two temperatures (T1=20°C; T2=24°C) and plant substrates (green fruits of lemon and seedling plants of sour orange) on the development, fecundity and life table parameters (the intrinsic rate of increase (rm), the mean generation time (T0) and the net reproduction ratio (R0)) of the black scale were assessed. From surveys conducted in the main citrus growing regions located in the northern part of Tunisia, a total of 84 samples were collected and over 200 slide-mounted specimens were identified. Twenty-one species of scale insects are occurring nowadays on citrus trees in Tunisia; three of them were detected for the first time. An inventory of all species injuring citrus crop in Tunisia and their main characteristics (pest status, change in abundance over time, and distribution) is provided. Results on laboratory studies indicated a consistent influence of the temperature more than the plant substrate on the development and reproductive capacity of P. ziziphi. In fact, this species was well adapted at temperatures mainly 24°C. Survival declines clearly at 20°C (37.8% at female stages); while at 24°C very low mortalities were registered. Temperature significantly affected the durations of the majority of immature and adult stages; and total female development approached globally four months at 20ºC and two months at 24ºC. Sex differentiation showed a strong male-biased sex ratio of about 2:1 at 20°C and 1:2 at 24°C. Low mean fecundities were obtained, 26±3.5 and 47.47±1.5 eggs/female at 20°C and 24°C, respectively. In addition, at each generation, P. ziziphi had the capacity to increase their populations by a mean of 11.0 at 20°C in an average of 161.5 days with an intrinsic rate of increase of 0.015. At 24°C, parameters become better estimated; P. ziziphi populations can multiply meanly 32.35 times in an average of 86 days, with an intrinsic rate of increase of 0.041. As recommendations, the situation of some species is still unclear and it is necessary to continue with prospections in order to have a clearer complete list of species associated with the citrus trees in Tunisia. For life table study, this is a first contribution to assess the biological potential of the black scale under laboratory conditions; studying more temperatures should contribute to a better understanding of the population dynamics of this pest in the field.

▼ Larvae of coconut moth, Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lep.: Phycitidae), damage flowers and fruits of coconut, Cocos nucifera L., resulting in direct yield reduction. Thus, this work had three major objectives: to develop a feasible rearing methodology for all stages of this pest; to study the biology of A. subrufella reared at 18, 22, 25, 28, 30 and 32C and; to investigate the success of A. subrufella larvae colonizing coconut fruits related with the necrosis caused by the coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eryophyidae). The rearing technique consisted of using green coconut fruits 10-12 cm of diameter and infested artificially with two to five larvae per fruit. Based on fertility life table parameters estimated for three successive generations, the best results were obtained with two and three A. subrufella larvae reared per fruit. The storage of egg and pupal stages at 12 °C can be made upto five days without negative effect on egg viability and adult reproductive output, but storage periods over 10 days affected egg viability and adults performance. Developmental period of A. subrufella was reduced as temperature increases and marked effects were found at extreme temperatures of 18 and 32 °C. The egg-adult period ranged from 19.3 to 59.8 days from 32C to 18C, respectively. Developmental viability from egg to adult was 25% at 18 and 32 °C, and over 72% at the intermediate temperatures. The lower temperature threshold and thermal requirement for egg-adult period were 12.54 °C and 362.75 degree-days, respectively. Basedon thermal requirement, A. subrufella can have 13 generations per year in the Zona da Mata and Sertão areas of Pernambuco State, Brazil. Data from field survey showed that only coconut fruits exhibiting necrosis caused by the coconut mite were infested with A. subrufella larvae. Moths of A. subrufella, however, exhibited similar oviposition preference on damage and undamaged coconut fruits. Neonate larvae and third instar larvae were not able to colonize undamaged coconut fruits. These results support the hypothesis that the necrosis in the coconut fruit caused by early infestation of the coconut mite is a key factor to A. subrufella larvae to colonize the mesocarp of the fruit protected by the fruit perianth. Therefore, the status of coconut fruit key pest of A. subrufella depends on fruit necrosis caused by the coconut mite.

▼ A lagarta-do-cartucho, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E.

The study in the laboratory using leaves of each host, and the combination of leaf and boll of cotton as diet for S. frugiperda yielded low success of boll colonization by neonate larvae compared to only leaf. S. frugiperdafed cotton bolls exhibited longer larval, pupal and adult stages, and lower egg production. However, larvae fed leaf plus cotton bolls exhibited similar performance to corn and cotton leaves. Based on the results, the millet currently used in the crop systems with soybean, corn or cotton, is a potential host for S. frugiperda while, cotton was intermediate diet compared to corn and soybean
