▼ This thesis presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted to develop reliable methods for estimating and minimizing the carbon emissions incurred in construction and end-of-life phases of a concrete structure. Through developing such methods, this thesis addresses an existing gap in the scientific literature which has been traditionally focused on cradle to site embodied carbon as well as operating carbon of buildings; and thereby complements the existing methods to enable achieving a full life cycle carbon emission estimate for concrete structures. A simplified computational method to estimate construction carbon emissions based on quantity take-offs from Building Information Models is presented. The method is then improved by accounting for uncertainty and the idling time of equipment to develop a more precise construction emission estimation method. The improved estimation method targets concreting and lifting operations as the most carbon-intensive operations in construction of a concrete structure. The estimation method is coupled with optimization models to minimize associated carbon emissions by optimizing concrete placing and lifting operations. The collected data from an actual construction project in Sydney are used to verify the presented carbon emission estimation methods. In addition, a framework to minimize the end-of-life carbon emissions of a concrete structure through estimating and comparing the emissions associated with different possible recycling and landfilling strategies is presented. The thesis finally concludes by highlighting the importance of incorporating the proposed methods as a part of a wider life cycle carbon footprint assessment method, to evaluate various design decisions in practice, by presenting a case involving selection of structural system for a building. The effects of different structural systems, height of the structure and type of material on associated life cycle carbon emissions are studied to highlight the importance of achieving a realistic estimate of carbon emissions as an important input into decision-making process in early design phase of construction projects.

▼ Levels of emissions to the environment imposed by human activities have been growing at an alarming rate over the past few decades. Buildings contribute a significant proportion of this total impact because of their consumptions of significant material and energy over the lifecycle. Studies have indicated that the building sector consumes about 40% of the materials entering the global economy and emits approximately about 33% of the environmental emissions. To solve the problem, life cycle assessment (LCA) as a powerful tool can be used to analyse their environmental effects for a building it includes production and transportation of building the materials phase, the construction phase, the operation/ maintenance phase and the end-of-life phase. However, very few studies have been found concentrating on the construction phase of the building. Most of the previous studies either ignore or approximate the effects of the construction phase when comparing to the total life cycle environmental impacts of the building. Several reasons can be found for this, such as data collection and inventory issues, lack of reliable software and site specific complications. Following the introduction of carbon tax, (currently not active) the contractors and designers in Australia are more interested in reducing the emissions at the construction stage. A simple method is lacking which enable users to compare and evaluate emissions at various activities at the construction stage. Hence, in this study, a process based emission analysis was proposed to critically evaluate the environmental emissions from the construction stage of a building. Several models and methodologies were also developed to carryout in-depth emissions analysis in view of critically investigating the emission patterns in the foundation & structure construction stages. These emissions were then converted into environmental impacts to compare its significance to the global, regional and local environment. Three case studies have been considered for the analysis: two typical high-rise residential and one commercial building construction. On-site data collection was conducted to obtain the major input data required for the emission analysis. Apart from on-site data, energy reports, bill of quantities (BOQ), project timelines and daily progress reports were used to collect data. The results were then utilized for developing a simple toolkit that would enable to compare and estimate emissions at construction stage with minimum effort. Emission results obtained at the foundation construction stage indicated higher proportion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from equipment and transportation compared to that in the total building construction. Considerable amounts of non-GHG emissions such as Nitrous Oxides (NOx) and Carbon Monoxides (CO) were also recorded at foundation construction level. ▼ The nature of the construction industry and the complexities accompanying the sector of the economy globally, necessitates that role players review their positions continuously in an effort to stay abreast of the most modern best practice value chain developments, not only in terms of relationships formed within the upstream supply chain (client supply chain), but also within the downstream supply chain (main contractor/supplier supply chain). Not only is it a natural phenomenon for role players to shift their focus from best practise value chain development to a more relaxed state during a boom in the global economy, but also to shift their focus back to best practices during a slump in the global economy, in order to protect their margins and competitive position established during economic prosperity. To this extent, this dissertation offers an overview of the core aspects that cause misalignment between the objectives of the role players in the construction industry as well as the critical need for role players to proactively shift their paradigm in an effort to mitigate any potential effects the economy might have on role player relationships as well as on the productivity of the industry and the supply chain. Chapter 1 provides the overview, the problem statement and the primary and secondary objectives of the study, and in particular, achieving alignment of the objectives of the role players in a typical construction project. This is followed by a detailed literature study in chapter 2 that provides information regarding role player relationships and the alignment of objectives in the construction industry. This is supported by an empirical study in chapter 3 that links the practical state of affairs with the literature study. The dissertation then concludes by introducing recommendations and a generic project strategic model that can be implemented in an effort to achieve alignment of the objectives of the role players in a typical construction project.

▼ Urban planning starts to be heavily focused on the provision of adequate networks of urban infrastructures to stimulate a shift towards sustainable mobility in order to alleviate resource consumption and environmental impacts in cities. Nevertheless, the integration of life cycle environmental criteria in the design and management of the urban infrastructures required to support sustainable mobility is usually missing. Given the vast span and increasing global investment in the deployment of new infrastructure, the environmental burden imposed to the urban public space can be significant. This dissertation concentrates on the characterization of the life-cycle environmental performance of conventional designs of (concrete, asphalt and granite) sidewalks and charging facilities for electric vehicles (two-wheelers). Sidewalks are basic urban pavements implemented to support walking and cycling as the cleanest modes of urban mobility. Sidewalks also represent the matrix for the layout of different urban elements required to support sustainable mobility. Charging facilities for electric vehicles represent one urban element being heavily implemented in cities to encourage the electricification of the urban vehicle fleet as a promising strategy to cut oil consumption and pollutant emissions from motorized mobility. Life Cycle Assessment is applied in order to identify the most environmentally-friendly solutions and best practices to minimize the environmental burden imposed to the urban public space, thereby increasing the value of greening urban mobility. The dissertation also looks for solutions to improve the environmental performance of those product systems with high environmental footprint in order to achieve major environmental improvements at the urban scale. On the one hand, the potential for cleaner industrial production of granite tiles used in construction is analyzed from an Industrial Ecology approach (technological improvement, rainwater harvesting and by-product synergies). On the other hand, ecodesign principles are applied in the conceptualization of an eco-pergola (street furniture) that can contribute to support multimodal (pedestrian and e-bike) mobility. As a result, this dissertation provides complete and disaggregated inventory data of the mobilized resources (energy, water, materials) and environmental impacts of the life cycle of each product system, identifies the most relevant hot-spots for environmental improvement and defines a set of criteria and best-practices for sustainability-based decision-making to minimize the environmental burden of the urban public space. ▼ The construction industry is one of the highest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and there is an increased awareness towards making the industry more sustainable, efficient and environment-friendly. Although there have been significant strides in building energy efficiency through adoption of rating systems and codes, the focus on developing best practices for reducing the carbon-footprint of the construction phase of the life-cycle of a project has been limited. Although the construction phase is short compared to the use phase of a building, the intensity of emissions during this phase is higher and there is an opportunity for improvement through measuring and monitoring the accrual of carbon-footprint during construction. The research question that this thesis explores is how a Building Information Model (BIM) based workflow used with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools can enable contractors and construction managers to measure and track their carbon-footprint. To address this research question, the study presents a model-driven framework together with two case studies validating the carbon footprint management tool for the construction projects. Current practice lacks methods to track carbon footprint of the construction phase since the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods has remained primarily limited to design and operation phases of a project. In addition, the current methods heavily rely on user inputs on materials and the state of planned-vs.-actual work-in-progress. The presented framework addresses current inefficiencies by leveraging 4D Building Information Models (BIM) in conjunction with LCA tools to benchmark carbon footprint during pre-construction phases and monitor it during the construction phase. The management framework – built on earned value management concepts – offers metrics to assess and communicate deviations between benchmarked and actual carbon footprint, and facilitates root-cause assessments to minimize performance deviations, and excessive carbon footprints. The two case-studies performed as a proof-of-concept vary in their BIM practices and progress monitoring methods, so a parallel has been drawn between the state of BIM adoption and the opportunity for better carbon-footprint management. The case-studies show that if the framework is used, there is a significant opportunity for reduction in the excess carbon footprint generated at the project level. The deviations are visualized in a timely manner using the BIM-based method which is key to facilitate communication and decision-making for taking required corrective actions. With project teams being able to realize the effect of carbon-footprint, it acts as an incentivizing force to the upstream supply chain to document and provide embodied carbon data for materials and assemblies used in construction because there is an incentive for the contractors to choose a supplier with lower carbon-footprint. ▼ The use of life-cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of pavement systems is a topic that stakeholders in academia, industry, and government have actively engaged with in the last two decades. The LCA methodology aims to provide quantitative environmental metrics such as energy consumption and greenhouse gases regarding the cradle-to-grave impacts accumulated over the pavement’s life-cycle. While research progress has been made to improve the inventory data and models used in pavement LCA, the connectivity between development of the LCA, application of an LCA software, and interpretation of LCA results have not yet been thoroughly addressed. Thus, in order to further the practical utilization of pavement LCA, work must be done to evaluate how LCA consumers and decision makers can apply and interpret LCA results and how methodological issues may affect LCA results. The first portion of this dissertation concerns the compilation and application of regional life-cycle inventory data for initial pavement construction. Using data modeled to represent the Northern Illinois region, various pavement mixtures and pay item activities are evaluated for initial environmental impacts due to material production and construction processes. To address the limitations in possessing only partial LCA impacts, a scenario-based analysis is used to consider the effect of future pavement performance on life-cycle environmental impacts. In addition, economic impacts are also calculated for mixes and pay items, and a cost-effectiveness analysis is conducted to expand the pay item environmental assessment into a useful set of metrics for agencies. Building upon the inventory data compiled, a full LCA framework and software is then implemented. The roadway/roadside software is designed to consider each life-cycle stage (i.e., materials and construction, maintenance and rehabilitation, use, and end-of-life) of major roadway/roadside elements including drainage, landscape, lighting, pavement, and structures using pay items to facilitate agency utilization. A set of fourteen diverse pavement construction contracts are analyzed using the LCA software and their results are visualized and interpreted as relevant to transportation agencies. The final portion of this dissertation evaluates key interpretation issues related to pavement LCA. A series of sensitivity analyses are performed on major methodological choices to determine which decisions and parameters ultimately have a significant effect on the overall LCA results. Furthermore, two methods for incorporating uncertainty into the LCA are also implemented - one using a simplistic probabilistic approach and the other using an informed Bayesian updating approach. The effects of considering data uncertainty in LCA, especially for comparative analyses, are addressed. ▼ Sustainability and specifically environmental stewardship are emerging as prominent issues in engineering decision-making. Despite this, the United States has neither a national policy on sustainability, nor a national sustainable transportation strategy. In many cases this has resulted in state DOTs basing their environmental practices on requirements set out previously by EPA regulations with little or no additional consideration of environmental effects. A survey conducted as part of this thesis revealed that environmental stewardship is not considered part of current DOT pavement management engineersâ job responsibilities, despite having duties such as pavement design and maintenance which can greatly affect the environmental impact of a project. Initial cost and engineering judgment were the most widely considered in decision-making, with LCCA also being considered at least some of the time by most respondents. Environmental impacts, on the other hand, are not often integrated into formal decision making and are more likely to be considered as a â tie breakerâ when alternatives have similar costs. The literature review also covered two distinct types of environmental decision support tools: Environmental Rating Tools and Environmental Impact Calculators. Rating Tools gather predominantly environmental impact information in order to award a score to a project. Environmental Calculators are software tools that use material or equipment inputs to estimate the amount of pollutants produced by a project. While a variety of environmental impact tools are currently available they suffer from drawbacks such as incomplete or unclearly defined LCA boundaries, consideration of only one environmental impact, subjectivity, lack of transparency, out-of-date databases, and an inability to perform probabilistic calculations. CO2e was the only environmental factor considered by nearly all Environmental Calculators reviewed as part of this thesis and was a major focus of the Rating Tools. The thesis proposes the framework for a tool that addresses some of the limitations of available tools and aids decision-makers in incorporating environmental factors into roadway decision-making. The proposed tool would address many of the limitations of previous environmental impact calculators and could be implemented without the need for extensive additional research. The tool would calculate emissions due to material extraction and production, emissions due to construction activities, resource consumptions, and emissions due to work zone delays. Emissions due to work zone delays are not considered by any other currently available tool. The tool would also perform probabilistic calculations and have a database which could be added to and updated by users. Additional products developed as part of this thesis are a review of currently available environmental impact tools and a Microsoft Excel workbook used to demonstrate the intended usage of the tool. ▼ The construction industry has significant impacts on ecological systems, and alternative ways to mitigate environmental impacts associated with construction activities have generated tremendous interest in the United States. Although quantifying and analyzing the cumulative ecological resource consumption of the construction industry is of great importance, it has not been studied sufficiently. Several studies have been conducted to quantify the energy and resource consumptions, as well as air emissions of different construction sectors and pavement designs. However, the direct and indirect role of the ecosystem goods and services were generally excluded in these studies. Current study aims to fill this research gap in life cycle assessment literature by accounting for the total ecological resource consumption of the construction sectors and several pavement designs, including their supply chains. To achieve this objective, a thermodynamic based hybrid life cycle assessment model has been developed. This developed model has complemented previous life cycle assessment studies on resource consumption of U.S. construction sectors and different pavement structures by evaluating them not only from emissions and energy consumption standpoints, but also from ecological resource accounting perspective. The economic output values of each U.S. construction sector were obtained from Department of Commerce Input-Output Table. The impacts on the ecosystem were calculated based on the economic data in terms of cumulative mass, energy, industrial exergy, and ecological exergy. In this study, 13 different U.S. construction sectors and various pavement technologies, including Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), Hot-mix Asphalt (HMA), and Warm-mix Asphalt (WMA) additives such as Sasobit®, EvothermTM, and Aspha-min® are holistically evaluated by using several sustainability metrics such as resource and emissions intensity, efficiency, renewability, and loading ratio. ▼ The need for efficient energy conversion and utilization has magnified on account of global environmental concerns, leading to a dramatic rise in focus on technologies that can accomplish such enhanced efficiencies. In this context, thermoelectrics (TEs) have emerged as a prominent platform on account of rigorous research that has enabled a significant leap in their conversion efficiencies, which enhances their potential to lower fossil fuel consumption. However, the advent of novel TEs has been accompanied by growing concerns about the use of scarce and toxic constituent elements in most of these materials/systems, raising questions about their eco-friendliness. While these concerns must be suitably addressed, the very nature of looking at TEs solely in terms of either benefits during their usage, or at issues with their constituents, confines the notion of sustainability to one or few stages of their life cycle. This creates doubts about the traditional claims of TEs being ecofriendly, since other environmental issues associated with their life cycle, such as impacts caused by their production or end-of-life treatment, remain neglected. These gaps hinder a true assessment of ecological credentials of TEs as an energy harvesting platform, and also make it difficult to provide adequate directions to policymakers and other stakeholders on the nature of steps required to make this platform ecologically suitable and economically viable. To ameliorate these gaps, this work explores the environmental profile of TEs using life cycle assessment (LCA). TE devices – modules and generators – were evaluated for environmental performance across their life cycle for three applications differing in their nature of waste heat emission and mobility. These were: (a) baseload coal-based power plant (static, constant emission); (b) peak load natural gas-based power plants (static, periodic emission); and (c) automobiles (mobile, intermittent emission). For all end-uses, TEs were assessed on various impacts. The first-ever exhaustive inventory analysis to date was conducted for production of TE devices, while three end-of-life (EOL) scenarios were considered to determine the benefits and pitfalls of recycling TEs as these use scarce constituents. Subsequently, the results from these LCA analyses were used to distill key findings and postulate principles for developing sustainable thermoelectrics. LCA analysis of TEs showed that both high electricity consumption for TE processing and use of constituent elements that emit toxic waste during their extraction and refining, caused the bulk of their production-related impacts. Further, while TE devices were observed to be environmentally sound for applications involving continuous waste heat emission (coal-based power), they showed ineffectiveness for periodic (gas-based electricity) and intermittent waste heat emission (automobiles) to varying degrees. ▼ In this dissertation we address three different sustainability concepts: [1] modeling of biodiesel production via heterogeneous catalysis, [2] life cycle analysis for pyrolysis of switchgrass for using in power plant, and [3] modeling of pyrolysis of biomass. Thus we deal with Specific Aim 1, 2 and 3. In Specific Aim 1, the models for esterification in biodiesel production via heterogeneous catalysis were developed. The models of the reaction over the catalysts were developed in two parts. First, a kinetic study was performed using a deterministic model to develop a suitable kinetic expression; the related parameters were subsequently estimated by numerical techniques. Second, a stochastic model was developed to further confirm the nature of the reaction at the molecular level. The deterministic and stochastic models were in good agreement. In Specific Aim 2, life cycle analysis and life cycle cost for pyrolysis of switchgrass for using in power plant model were developed. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission for power generation was investigated through life cycle assessment. The process consists of cultivation, harvesting, transportation, storage, pyrolysis, transportation and power generation. Here pyrolysis oil is converted to electric power through co- combustion in conventional fossil fuel power plants. The conventional power plants which are considered in this work are diesel engine power plant, natural gas turbine power plant, coal-fired steam-cycle power plant and oil-fired steam-cycle power plant. Several scenarios are conducted to determine the effect of selected design variables on the production of pyrolysis oil and type of conventional power plants. In Specific Aim 3, pyrolysis of biomass models were developed. Since modeling of pyrolysis of biomass is complex and challenging because of short reaction times, temperatures as high as a thousand degrees Celsius, and biomass of varying or unknown chemical compositions. As such a deterministic model is not capable of representing the pyrolysis reaction system. We propose a new kinetic reaction model, which would account for significant uncertainty. Specifically we have employed fuzzy modeling using the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in order to describe the pyrolysis of biomass. ▼ The doctoral research revolves around a comparative study of timber modern methods of construction for low-rise, residential buildings in Scotland. The building techniques studied involve both timber-frame panel construction (open-panel and closed-panel systems and structural insulated panels) and massive-timber construction (cross-laminated and nail-laminated timber panels). A non-timber technique is also included in the study: more traditional, load-bearing masonry (blockwork). These different building techniques have been analysed from two complementary aspects: environmental impacts and thermal performance. The environmental study is based on the life-cycle assessment methodology and embraces various aspects: environmental impacts (e.g., climate change, acidification, eutrophication, ozone depletion, etc.), consumption of energy (renewable and non-renewable resources) and production of waste (from non-hazardous to radioactive). The assessment takes a cradle-to-gate approach and, in its structure and method, is informed by the current recommendations of the international standards in the field (i.e., ISO 14040 series). Various environmental trade-offs between construction methods have been identified. In terms of global-warming potential (excluding biogenic carbon sequestration), results suggest that timber-frame buildings show a better performance than masonry buildings; this is particularly true for the open-panel system, which emits about 10% less carbon than the masonry counterpart. Massive-timber buildings tend to cause more carbon emissions than masonry ones. In terms of consumption of non-renewable primary energy, timber buildings do not generally show significant advantages with respect to blockwork-based masonry. In particular, structural-insulated panel systems tend to show very high energy requirements. Timber-based buildings show a tendency to cause increased acidification, eutrophication and creation of low ozone than their masonry counterpart. The level of offsite fabrication that is employed for the erection of the buildings plays an important role in the magnitude of most environmental impacts, which show an average decrease between 5% and 10% when some of the operations are shifted from the construction site to the factory. v The thermal study investigates the performance of the building envelope, and, in particular, of external walls, by means of tests whereby the thermal behaviour of a sample of walls (of full-size section) has been observed and measured over time. On the outside, the walls were exposed to real, natural weather variations throughout the summer. A crescente preocupação que envolve as questões ambientais a nível mundial, cada vez mais agravadas pelo comportamento irresponsável do Homem, conduziu à criação de métodos de avaliação dos impactes ambientais provocados por produtos e sistemas. Sendo o sector da construção responsável por grande parte desses impactes, é evidente a necessidade de aplicação de medidas que visem mitigar ou, no mínimo, reduzir até valores aceitáveis, essas agressões ao meio ambiente. Nesse âmbito, é natural que tenha surgido a ideia de aplicar uma metodologia tão precisa e rigorosa como a LCA ao sector da construção. No entanto, nos dias de hoje, as preocupações alargaram-se às vertentes social e económica que, juntamente com a vertente ambiental, formam o triângulo de equilíbrio do desenvolvimento sustentável. É precisamente essa avaliação tripartida que esta Dissertação pretende abordar, tentando aprofundar conhecimentos e fornecer alternativas, através da análise crítica, que possam contribuir para a melhoria contínua desta metodologia.

The growing concern surrounding environmental issues worldwide, increasingly aggravated by the irresponsible behavior of man, led to the creation of methods to assess the environmental impacts caused by products and systems. As the construction sector accounts for a large portion of these impacts, it is clear the need to implement measures aimed at eliminating or at least reducing to acceptable values these attacks on the environment. In this context, the arising of the idea of applying a methodology so precise and accurate like the LCA to the construction sector was perfectly natural. However, nowadays, concerns have widened to the social and economic aspects, which, together with the environmental aspect, form the triangle of balanced sustainable development. It is precisely this tripartite evaluation that this thesis aims to address, trying to deepen knowledge and provide alternatives, through critical analysis, which may contribute to the continuous improvement of this methodology.

▼ Worldwide annual expenditure for the maintenance and rehabilitation of constructed building components is rising, whilst ageing building components continue to fail at an ever-increasing rate. Because of increasing concerns over the levels of expenditure required to maintain building stock, asset management practices are gaining increasing attention. The long-term cost implications of poor asset management practices are significant, especially for major building owners or local government authorities, where the replacement cycle will see increasing need for life-care maintenance. The prediction of the performance or service life of a building system and its components is a very complex problem. The factor method on the other hand is fairly simple, but the result is only a single figure for service life and does not take into account at all the variability of the process involved. A lot of work has been carried out in the area of service life prediction, but there is very little that can be readily used by asset managers. A simple model is developed to cater for all types of local government buildings. This model considers the usage of the building as well as material and construction parameters through a rule based approach. A total of 690 Council buildings were surveyed in the City of Greater Geelong. A grouping of buildings has been prepared which reflects the function and use of buildings for asset management and planning purposes. This model will allow asset managers to be more proactive in their maintenance management activities. They will be able to select the most cost effective maintenance strategy for each individual component. They will be able to monitor more constantly the performance of their building assets, and will be better equipped to allocate scarce resources to areas of significant need. The selection of capital planning projects will be based on a rational system of prioritisation. These projects can be easily identified long before the failure of the building component. The performance of this model is tested on twelve year data and this will facilitate the prediction of renewal costs for various types of council buildings.

▼ The main objective of this graduation was to design a sustainable hand cart product concept for young families in the Netherlands, which is simple in its design, easy to use, and affordably priced. The hand cart should furthermore be suitable for up to three children to sit in and suitable to transport goods. Research was done on current hand carts on the market, on users' experiences with them, and on the current sustainability and circularity of Greentom's currently produced product. This research resulted in a list of users' needs and wishes in a hand cart, including the ideal dimensions, needed safety norms, needed requirements for it to be easy to use, and the selling price preferred to be under €250. Furthermore, the research concluded that rPP and rPET are the most suitable and sustainable materials to be used in the hand cart chassis and textile respectively, and that an end-of-life scenario where new Greentom products are sent back and refurbished into 2nd-life products would result in hand carts with 62% lower eco-costs and 71%€ value capture compared to the product with a linear incineration end-of-life. By using these concluded required elements of a hand cart, and by defining the Greentom form family and future hand cart style, several ideas were developed after which five product ideas were proposed. The five ideas showed promising iterations on the basic frame structure, folding principle, push/pull bar design, and bottom design. By detailing their ergonomic and constructional aspects, which concluded the exact dimensions, necessary wheel types, push/pull bar positioning, weight-support beam construction, and necessary folding structure iterations, the ideas were concretized into three concepts: 'Horizontals', 'Twofold', and 'Diagonal'. The concepts were evaluated based on three main criteria from the list of requirements, after which the 'Diagonal' was concluded to be the most promising concept to be further developed into detail. Detailing the concept was done by defining the to-be-improved points with a structural mock-up model, and by defining and further developing satisfier and exciter attributes to ensure a high degree of customer satisfaction using the KANO model. Lastly, after building a 1:1 functional prototype of the improved final concept, the prototype was evaluated by means of a user test, and showed to successfully satisfy all users' needs and wishes with positive reactions on all attributes. The final design, the 'Greentom Go' concludes to be 1) simple in its design since it complies with Greentom's form family style while also expressing its own Hand Cart style, 2) easy to use as it is easily (un)foldable, enables children to independently step in and out of the hand cart, allows attachment of Greentom accessories and a baby car seat, and is well manoeuvrable by having large wheels, a pushable handlebar, and by being lightweight (7.57kg), and 3) affordable since the reuse of existing and future moulds as well as the refurbishment end-of-life scenario allows for lower total costs… Advisors/Committee Members: de Pauw, Ingrid (mentor), Wu, Jun (graduation committee), Delft University of Technology (degree granting institution).
