Most applications and documents are stored in a public cloud for storage and management purposes in a cloud computing environment. The major advantages of storing applications and documents in public cloud are lower cost through use of shared computing resources and no upfront infrastructure costs. However, in this case the management of data and other services is insecure. Therefore, security is a major problem in a public cloud as the cloud and the network are open to many other users. In order to provide security, it is necessary for data owners to store their data in the public cloud in a secure way and to use an appropriate access control scheme. Designing a computation and communication efficient key management scheme to selectively share documents based on fine-grained attribute-based access control policies in a public cloud is a challenging task. There are many existing approaches that encrypt documents prior to storage in the public cloud: These approaches use different keys and a public key cryptographic system to implement attribute-based encryption and/or proxy re-encryption. However, these approaches do not efficiently handle users joining and leaving the system when identity attributes and policies change. Moreover, these approaches require keeping multiple encrypted copies of the same documents, which has a high computational cost or incurs unnecessary storage costs. Therefore, this project focused on the design and development of an efficient key management scheme to allow the data owner to store data in a cloud service in a secure way. Additionally, the proposed approach enables cloud users to access the data stored in a cloud in a secure way. Many researchers have proposed key management schemes for wired and wireless networks. All of these existing key management schemes differ from the key management schemes proposed in this thesis. First, the key management scheme proposed in this thesis increases access level security. Second, the proposed key management scheme minimizes the computational complexity of the cloud users by performing only one mathematical operation to find the new group key that was computed earlier by the data owner. In addition, this proposed key management scheme is suitable for a cloud network. Third, the proposed key distribution and key management scheme utilizes privacy preserving methods, thus preserving the privacy of the user. Finally, a batch key updating algorithm (also called batch rekeying) has been proposed to reduce the number of rekeying operations required for performing batch leave or join operations. The key management scheme proposed in this thesis is designed to reduce the computation and communication complexity in all but a few cases, while increasing the security and privacy of the data.

▼ The Xe isotopes are located at a possible phase change in the collective structure from vibrational to rotational. The Xe isotopes therefore were considered as potential candidates for (γ)-soft nuclei or (O(6)) symmetry limit within the IBM. However, testing of the O(6) symmetry in Xe reveals that indeed their structure is more complicated. The study of the nucleus (¹²²Xe) is a part of a systematic examination of the development of collectivity in the Xe isotopes, which are located in the (Z>50), (N<82) region that display an extraordinarily smooth evolution of simple collective signatures. In order to probe the development of collectivity in greater detail, additional information on excited states is required. Specifically, the knowledge of excited states that decay to other excited states resulting low-energy transitions which can give strong indicators of the underlying structure need to be improved . The experiment to study (¹²²Xe) with the (β⁺/EC) decay of (¹²²Cs) was performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility located in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Radioactive (¹²²Cs) beams from the ISAC facility were delivered to the 8(π) spectrometer which was composed of 20 HPGe detectors. The isomeric and ground states of (¹²²Cs) decay to the (¹²²Xe) with half lives of 21 seconds and a 3.7 minutes, respectively. Two sets of high-statistics data for short- and long-half-life decays were collected to have an access for potential excited states of the (¹²²Xe). As an evidence of data quality, the level scheme of (¹²²Xe) has been dramatically extended by 177 new levels and 482 new transitions. Using (γ)-(γ) angular correlation analysis, 71 spin assignments have been made for 55 levels since a spin of some levels could be assigned via several different cascades. Mixing ratios for 44 (γ)-ray transitions were extracted from the angular correlation analysis by extracting the values from the minimized (χ²) fit. Branching ratios have been determined for all observed transitions independently in the two different data sets collected with the short and long cycled runs. The data have been compared with a sd-IBM-1 calculation. Advisors/Committee Members: Garrett, Paul (advisor).

Познавање параметара нуклеарне структуре, попут шеме нивоа, функциjе густине стања и функциjе jачине прелаза су неопходне за разумевање нуклеарних особина атомског jезгра. Ове величине су директно повезане са ефикасним пресеком, коjи jе битна физичка величина у нуклеарноj физици, као и теориjски са моделима jезгра. Прикупљање тачних и прецизних података о овим физичким величинама jе jедан од наjважниjих задатака у нискоенергетскоj нуклеарноj физици.У овом раду за одређивање ових величина коришћен jе метод двоструких гама каскада коjи се заснива на коинциденционоj детекциjи гама кваната коjи настаjу након захвата термалних неутрона на jезгрима мете. Циљ експеримента jе детекциjа два узастопна гама кванта коjи се емитуjу када се jезг-ро након захвата неутрона деексцитуjе са енергиjе захвата на основно или неко од нископобуђених стања.Jезгра коjа су испитивана у овом раду су⁹⁴Nb и⁵⁶Mn, а експерименти су извршени на BRR истра-живачком реактору у Будимпешти и FRM II истраживачком реактору на Техничком универзитету у Минхену, у Хаjнц Меjер-Лаjбниц центру, тим редом. Прикупљени експериментални подаци су анализирани и добиjене су информациjе о шеми нивоа и емитованих гама кваната приликом чега jе пронађен велики броj нових гама прелаза унутар ових jезгара (210 за ⁹⁴Nb, 50 за⁵⁶ Mn) , као и нових енергетских нивоа у овим jезгрима (29 за ⁹⁴ Nb, 24 за ⁵⁶ Mn). За детектоване каскаде израчунати су и интензитети. Након одређивања интензитета кас-када, за одређивање функциjе густине нивоа и jа-чине прелаза за ⁹⁴ Nb и ⁵⁶ Mn коришћен jе практични модел за гама распад неутронских резонанци, развиjен на Обjедињеном институту за нуклеарна истраживања у Дубни, Руска федерациjа. Такође, у овом раду jе одрађена и систематизациjа података за 43 jезгра коjа су раниjе испитивана овом методом и представљени су закључци добиjени овом систематизациjом.

Poznavanje parametara nuklearne strukture, poput šeme nivoa, funkcije gustine stanja i funkcije jačine prelaza su neophodne za razumevanje nuklearnih osobina atomskog jezgra. Ove veličine su direktno povezane sa efikasnim presekom, koji je bitna fizička veličina u nuklearnoj fizici, kao i teorijski sa modelima jezgra. Prikupljanje tačnih i preciznih podataka o ovim fizičkim veličinama je jedan od najvažnijih zadataka u niskoenergetskoj nuklearnoj fizici.U ovom radu za određivanje ovih veličina korišćen je metod dvostrukih gama kaskada koji se zasniva na koincidencionoj detekciji gama kvanata koji nastaju nakon zahvata termalnih neutrona na jezgrima mete. Cilj eksperimenta je detekcija dva uzastopna gama kvanta koji se emituju kada se jezg-ro nakon zahvata neutrona deekscituje sa energije zahvata na osnovno ili neko od niskopobuđenih stanja.Jezgra koja su ispitivana u ovom radu su⁹⁴Nb i⁵⁶Mn, a eksperimenti su izvršeni na BRR istra-živačkom reaktoru u Budimpešti i FRM II istraživačkom reaktoru na Tehničkom univerzitetu u Minhenu, u…

O presente trabalho reporta o esforço empenhado para relacionar nível d\'água e vazão, fazendo uso exclusivamente de medições de nível, em campo, durante a passagem de ondas de cheia através de um trecho de canal prismático situado no perímetro urbano da cidade de São Carlos, SP denominado Córrego do Gregório. Montagens para coleta de dados em campo foram testadas e foi utilizada a modelagem hidrodinâmica 1-D para a resolução das equações de Saint-Venant, através do método implícito de quatro pontos de Preissmann. Apesar do potencial do método, já apontado por alguns autores, o presente trabalho reporta dificuldades na realização de medições e também problemas na modelagem de trecho de canal com características muito particulares. Várias análises foram realizadas tais como a verificação do número de passos de tempo necessário para minimização dos efeitos da condição inicial imposta (IQ1), a verificação da celeridade de uma onda de cheia analisando os picos dos eventos e assim determinar o coeficiente de cisalhamento de Manning proposto por Aricò, Nasello e Tucciarelli (2009) e o método implícito na resolução das equações de SV proposto por Jin, Coran e Cook (2004), que funciona como um filtro baseado no número de Froude (condição do tipo de escoamento) também foi testado. Durante o evento do dia 23/03/2013 foi estimado as velocidades em campo. Para cada um dos 12 eventos registrados foi realizado uma simulação utilizando o modelo hidrodinâmico e o melhor resultado foi utilizado em uma segunda simulação para comparar as lâminas d\'água observadas e calculadas. Ao analisar o quanto os valores de erros máximos absolutos (ERMAX1 e ERMAX2) representam em relação ao máximo registro obtido no evento, em porcentagem, têm-se eventos com 3,6% até valores absurdos de 27,1%. Assim, trata-se de um trabalho teórico-experimental que oferece subsídios importantes para futuros trabalhos nessa direção.

This work reports the committed effort to relate water level and flow, using exclusively field measurements of level, during the passage of flood waves through a prismatic channel stretch located on the surroundings of São Carlos - SP called stream of Gregório. Assembles for data gathering in the field were tested and it was used 1-D hydrodynamic modeling for solving equations of Saint-Venant, through the four points Preissmann implicit method. Despite the potential of this method, as pointed out by some authors, this study reports difficulties in performing measurements and to model a channel stretch with very particular characteristics. Several analyzes were performed such as checking the number of time steps needed for minimizing the effects of the initial condition imposed (IQ1), verifying the celerity of a full wave analyzing the peaks of events and so to be able to determine the Manning friction coefficient proposed by Arico et al. (2009) and the implicit method to solve the S-V equations proposed by Jin, Coran e Cook (2004), which acts as a filter based on the Froude number (condition-type flow), was also tested.…

▼ In the present study, a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme was built for solving the surface-capturing level-set equation. Combined with the level-set equation, the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were employed for the prediction of nonlinear wave-interaction and wave-breaking phenomena over sloping beaches. In the level-set finite-analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) method, the free surface is represented by the zero level-set function, and the flows are modeled as immiscible air-water two phase flows. The Navier-Stokes equations for air-water two phase flows are formulated in a moving curvilinear coordinate system and discretized by a 12-point finite-analytical scheme using the finite-analytic method on a multi-block over-set grid system. The Pressure Implicit with Splitting of Operators / Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equation Revised (PISO/SIMPLER) algorithm was used to determine the coupled velocity and pressure fields. The evolution of the level-set method was solved using the third-order total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta method and fifth-order WENO scheme. The accuracy was confirmed by solving the Zalesak's problem. Two major subjects are discussed in the present study. First, to identify the WENO scheme as a more accurate scheme than the essentially non-oscillatory scheme (ENO), the characteristics of a nonlinear monochromatic wave were studied systematically and comparisons of wave profiles using the two schemes were conducted. To eliminate other factors that might produce wave profile fluctuation, different damping functions and grid densities were studied. To damp the reflection waves efficiently, we compared five damping functions. The free-surface elevation data collected from gauges distributed evenly in a numerical wave tank are analyzed to demonstrate the damping effect of the beach. Second, as a surface-tracking numerical method built on curvilinear coordinates, the level-set RANS model was tested for nonlinear bichromatic wave trains and breaking waves on a sloping beach with a complex free surface. As the wave breaks, the velocity of the fluid flow surface became more complex. Numerical modeling was performed to simulate the two-phase flow velocity and its corresponding surface and evolution when the wave passed over different sloping beaches. The breaking wave test showed that it is an efficient technique for accurately capturing the breaking wave free surface. To predict the breaking points, different wave heights and beach slopes are simulated. The results show that the dependency of wave shape and breaking characteristics to wave height and beach slope match the results provided by experiments. O presente trabalho possui enfoque em apresentar e desenvolver um programa capaz de simular a dinâmica de crescimento de uma bolha em regime de ebulição nucleada. Apresenta também fundamentos de mecânica dos fluidos, transferência de calor, métodos de rastreio e/ou captura de fronteira e métodos computacionais. Com a linguagem de programação Fortran 90 acoplado à IDE do CodeBlocks fez-se um programa para simular escoamentos de fluidos incompressíveis em coordenadas cartesianas sem e com mudança de fase. Para discretizar as equações governantes do problema, usou-se o Método de Elementos Finitos com o esquema da Separação Baseado na Característica (CBS) para estabilização da solução. Apresenta-se também no texto o desenvolvimento teórico dos métodos de discretização e estabilização. O código referente às equações fluidodinâmicas e térmica implementado foi testado no problema da cavidade com tampa deslizante e com convecção natural cujo domínio foi discretizado por uma malha não estruturada de elementos tetraédricos lineares e com malha estruturada de elementos hexaédricos lineares. Verificou-se que malhas estruturadas mostraram uma maior estabilidade para simulação do campo de pressão. Testou-se também resolver o campo de pressão através da Equação de Poisson para pressão e pelo Método da Compressibilidade Artificial. Foi evidenciado que ambos os métodos geram resultados muito similares para o campo de velocidade. Pela comparação dos resultados obtidos com os resultados benchmarking observa-se em alguns casos que o programa feito é capaz de simular um escoamento com transferência de calor com baixas velocidades. O código referente às equações de captura de fronteira também foi testado com um método Level Set modificado, que se mostrou um método para captura de fronteira fácil de ser implementado e que retorna resultados coerentes com as simulações de referência. Por fim, a simulação da dinâmica de crescimento de uma bolha em regime de ebulição nucleada mostrou raios de crescimento coerentes com dados experimentais da literatura.

▼ Face recognition is one of the most important and promising biometric techniques. In face recognition, a similarity score is automatically calculated between face images to further decide their identity. Due to its non-invasive characteristics and ease of use, it has shown great potential in many real-world applications, e.g., video surveillance, access control systems, forensics and security, and social networks. This thesis addresses key challenges inherent in real-world face recognition systems including pose and illumination variations, occlusion, and image blur. To tackle these challenges, a series of robust face recognition algorithms are proposed. These can be summarized as follows: In Chapter 2, we present a novel, manually designed face image descriptor named “Dual-Cross Patterns” (DCP). DCP efficiently encodes the seconder-order statistics of facial textures in the most informative directions within a face image. It proves to be more descriptive and discriminative than previous descriptors. We further extend DCP into a comprehensive face representation scheme named “Multi-Directional Multi-Level Dual-Cross Patterns” (MDML-DCPs). MDML-DCPs efficiently encodes the invariant characteristics of a face image from multiple levels into patterns that are highly discriminative of inter-personal differences but robust to intra-personal variations. MDML-DCPs achieves the best performance on the challenging FERET, FRGC 2.0, CAS-PEAL-R1, and LFW databases. In Chapter 3, we develop a deep learning-based face image descriptor named “Multimodal Deep Face Representation” (MM-DFR) to automatically learn face representations from multimodal image data. In brief, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are designed to extract complementary information from the original holistic face image, the frontal pose image rendered by 3D modeling, and uniformly sampled image patches. The recognition ability of each CNN is optimized by carefully integrating a number of published or newly developed tricks. A feature level fusion approach using stacked auto-encoders is designed to fuse the features extracted from the set of CNNs, which is advantageous for non-linear dimension reduction. MM-DFR achieves over 99% recognition rate on LFW using publicly available training data. In Chapter 4, based on our research on handcrafted face image descriptors, we propose a powerful pose-invariant face recognition (PIFR) framework capable of handling the full range of pose variations within ±90° of yaw. The framework has two parts: the first is Patch-based Partial Representation (PBPR), and the second is Multi-task Feature Transformation Learning (MtFTL). PBPR transforms the original PIFR problem into a partial frontal face recognition problem. ▼ Advances in medical technology have altered the need for certain types of surgery to be performed in traditional inpatient hospital settings. Less invasive surgical procedures allow a growing number of medical treatments to take place on an outpatient basis. Hospitals face growing competition from ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). The competitive threats posed by ASCs are important, given that inpatient surgery has been the cornerstone of hospital services for over a century. Additional research is needed to understand how surgical volume shifts between and within acute care general hospitals (ACGHs) and ASCs. This study investigates how medical technology within the hospital industry is changing medical services delivery. The main purposes of this study are to (1) test Clayton M. Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation in health care, and (2) examine the effects of disruptive innovation on appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and bariatric surgery (ACBS) utilization. Disruptive innovation theory contends that advanced technology combined with innovative business models—located outside of traditional product markets or delivery systems—will produce simplified, quality products and services at lower costs with broader accessibility. Consequently, new markets will emerge, and conventional industry leaders will experience a loss of market share to “non-traditional” new entrants into the marketplace. The underlying assumption of this work is that ASCs (innovative business models) have adopted laparoscopy (innovative technology) and their unification has initiated disruptive innovation within the hospital industry. The disruptive effects have spawned shifts in surgical volumes from open to laparoscopic procedures, from inpatient to ambulatory settings, and from hospitals to ASCs. The research hypothesizes that: (1) there will be larger increases in the percentage of laparoscopic ACBS performed than open ACBS procedures; (2) ambulatory ACBS will experience larger percent increases than inpatient ACBS procedures; and (3) ASCs will experience larger percent increases than ACGHs. The study tracks the utilization of open, laparoscopic, inpatient and ambulatory ACBS. The research questions that guide the inquiry are: 1. How has ACBS utilization changed over this time? 2. Do ACGHs and ASCs differ in the utilization of ACBS? 3. How do states differ in the utilization of ACBS? 4. Do study findings support disruptive innovation theory in the hospital industry? The quantitative study employs a panel design using hospital discharge data from 2004 and 2009. The unit of analysis is the facility. The sampling frame is comprised of ACGHs and ASCs in Florida and Wisconsin. The study employs exploratory and confirmatory data analysis. This work finds that disruptive innovation theory is an effective model for assessing the hospital industry. The model provides a useful framework for analyzing the interplay between ACGHs and ASCs.
