▼ Barnacles have the longest penis
length, relative to body
length, among all organisms. It is common for their penis
length to be several times that of their bodiesâ. One reason is that barnacles are immobile and they rely on penis to reach mates. Thus the longer the penis the more mates there may be. How do barnacles balance mate numbers and penis cost? In this investigation, we studied the possible relationship between local densities and penis lengths of barnacles. Our goal is to explain the high intraspecific variation in penis lengths of barnacles. First, we measured the Nearest Neighbor Distance(NND) and Morphological Index (MI), both indices of local barnacle densities, of individuals of Amphibalanus amphitrite at Tainan, Tetraclita kuroshioensis at Keelung and Kenting, and Tetraclitella chinensis at Penghu. The cirrus lengths were used as indices of body sizes. A high percentage of penis
length variation could not be explained by body sizes in these barnacles. In A. amphitrite and T. kuroshioensis, a positive correlation between residue penis
length, i.e., after deducting the effect of body size, and MI was found. Assuming no sperm competition, we found, through simulation, that the optimal penis
length, is not related to local densities, whereas in the presence of sperm competition, the longer penis
length the lower fitness. In lab experiment, however, penis
length of A. amphitrite was found to increase with increasing number of neighbors.Under high densities, the shell base become relatively small (high MI) and the shell becomes elongated. Investment in eggs may be limited by space available for brooding, thus more energy is available to invest in male functions. Under the assumption of no sperm competition, penis
length remains the only option for effective investment. The preliminary result here suggests that the penis
length of barnacles is plastic and is influenced by the local density. In Tetraclitella chinensis, no correlation between local densities and penis lengths was found; the very flat shell morphology of the species may have contributed to this phenomenon.

▼ One in every four people will experience a mental health problem in their life. This morbidity means the most effective and efficient forms of psychotherapy are in high demand, but patient preferences have been over-looked with regards to psychotherapy treatment parameters. Treatment parameters are largely traditional and have emerged from financial and logistical restrictions. Treatment success is mostly based on outcome measures of symptom intensity, which patients may not necessarily see as the biggest problem. Indeed, research has shown that patients typically attend fewer sessions than a treatment is designed for. In the current study, two-hundred closed case files were analysed, from a private psychology practice which allows patients to dictate their own treatment lengths and periodicity. Patients were varied in how they attended therapy, with most attending far fewer sessions than dictated by studies based on the Dose-Response Model of therapy. The findings were more in line with the Good Enough Level model. Contrary to previous evidence, diagnosis was not found to result in different lengths and periodicities of therapy between patients. The current study gives a realistic overview of what is seen in private psychology practice, where patients dictate their own treatment parameters. An argument is made for the necessity to put patient preferences at the forefront when deciding on psychotherapy parameters.

▼ We look at a mechanical metamaterial whose stiffness does not scale inversely proportional to its
length. We perform tensile tests to study the relation between the
length and the stiffness of the metamaterial. We find two regimes for the stiffness, which are separated by a characteristic
length. We explain the cause of this
length and show that we can alter its value. Lastly we set up a model that simulates the behavior of the metamaterial in tension and can reproduce the experimental data.

▼ The most accurate ageing methods for non-adult individuals are based on dental development and eruption. However, archaeological skeletal remains are often fragmented or incomplete, as a result of which teeth may be lost or severely damaged. Recently, Primeau et al. (2016) developed a method to estimate age-at-death of non-adults with the use of the diaphyseal
length for all major long bones. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the quadratic regression formulae on a post-medieval Dutch population. Long bone lengths were measured for a total of 61 individuals from the Middenbeemster skeletal collection, ranging from birth to 21 years of age. Regression ages were assigned, and subsequently compared to the known ages of 38 individuals, and estimated dental ages of 23 individuals. The results show an overall high accuracy of the method in when all age groups are combined, but inaccurate regression ages were produced for the long bones of the infants, and some of the bones of the children in the sample. This discrepancy might be partly explained by a difference in size and varying growth rates between the Middenbeemster and Danish individuals. For the juvenile and adolescent age categories, almost no significant differences were found, which suggests that the regression formulae can be used to estimate age-at-death accurately for non-adults above the age of 6 years.

▼ Environmental conditions can lead to mercury accumulations in fish that are highly variability among spatially close lakes in Ontario, Canada. Mercury methylation caused by sulfate reduction can influence total mercury concentrations in fish (THgfish). Kahshe and Mountain lakes were chosen to assess temporal trends of THgfish and using paleolimnological tools described the lake environment in terms of total mercury (THgsed), total sulfur (TSsed), chromium-reducible sulfur (CRSsed), and chrysophyte-inferred lake-water pH (CI-pH).
THgfish were standardized by length (LS-THgfish) to identify trends and make comparisons with archived fish from the Royal Ontario Museum. In Kahshe Lake, LS-THgfish for 30-cm smallmouth bass and 40-cm walleye displayed peak concentrations in the early 1980s (0.74 +/- 0.17 µg/g d.w; n=41 and 1.40 +/- 0.42 µg/g d.w; n=16, respectively) with clear declines starting in 1999 (0.33 µg/g d.w +/- 0.13, n=12). At Mountain Lake, LS-THgfish in smallmouth bass (0.31 – 0.45 µg/g) and walleye (0.30 – 0.49 µg/g) were low and stable through the period of observation. Peak concentrations at Kahshe Lake were over 300% higher than the 1926 archival sample (0.22 µg/g d.w, 22.1 cm total length), while the 1948 Mountain Lake sample (0.28 µg/g, 24.4 cm total length) is consistent with modern concentrations.
As expected from LS-THgfish , THgsed was higher in Kahshe Lake, although enrichment was seen at both sites. Temporal trends for TSsed and CRSsed diverged with enrichment in Kahshe Lake and depletion in Mountain Lake. CI-pH showed minimal temporal changes. Although trends of CRSsed indicate sulfate is processed differently among the lakes, geochronology highlighted a consistent spatio-temporal relationship between THgfish and CRSsed. This strongly supports a relationship between sulfate reduction rates and Hg methylation, independent of THgsed and pH. Therefore, if THgfish is used as an indicator of aquatic health CRSsed may be a useful tool for rapid assessment.

The effectiveness of different minimally invasive epiphysiodesis techniques in the management of paediatric leg length discrepancies: a systematic review.

▼ Paediatric leg
length discrepancies (LLDs) are more common than might be expected with the literature reporting that between 0.1 and 7% of the paediatric population has a LLD of >2 cm. Causes can be subdivided into congenital and acquired aetiologies. LLDs greater than 2 cm can lead to functional complications such as altered gait kinetics and abnormal loading of joints. For children predicted to have a LLD of 2-5 cm, minimally invasive epiphysiodesis (MIE) is the current management of choice. Presently, there are four MIE techniques commonly used throughout the world, however, no systematic reviews have compared these techniques. The objective of this thesis was to conduct a systematic review to synthesise the best available evidence on the use of MIE for the management of paediatric LLD. The effectiveness of four different techniques was compared: percutaneous epiphysiodesis using transphyseal screws (PETS); physeal drilling and curettage (PDC); physeal stapling; and guided growth with eight-Plates. Studies that evaluated two or more of the interventions or those that investigated a single intervention were considered for inclusion. Primary outcomes for the review included absolute LLD at skeletal maturity; rate of correction; percentage of correction; and incidence of long term complications. This review found that all techniques were sufficient at reducing the burden of a LLD with the mean final LLD of each being calculated to be <2 cm. Despite this, the rate of complications was higher in the eight-Plates and staples groups than the PDC and PETS groups. The PETS cohort had a reported failure of growth plate arrest (GPA) of 2.5% compared with 6% in the PDC and staples groups and 14% in the eight-Plate groups. The rate of inadequate correction (i.e. over or under correction), were also higher in the eight-Plate and staples groups (15% and 23%, respectively) than the PETS and PDC groups (8% and 13%, respectively). The incidence of angular deformities was much higher in the staples cohort (33%) than in the other groups (PDC 2%; PETS 9%; and eight-Plates 5%). The incidence of acute complications, such as haematoma, infection and acute knee pain, was similar across all techniques. Unfortunately, the overall level of evidence was low, due to the suboptimal and heterogeneous nature of the study designs included in this systematic review, and thus, treatment guidelines could not be developed. Notwithstanding this, the available evidence showed that all the evaluated techniques can adequately reduce a LLD, although PDC and PETS appear to be more effective at this. Further research is required to substantiate these claims; for now, all techniques remain an acceptable technique for addressing LLDs of 2-5 cm.

▼ Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease, characterized by inflammation, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and obstruction of the airways. During an asthma attack, the contraction of airway smooth muscle (ASM) in combination with increased mucus production reduces the bronchial diameter, increasing the resistance to airflow into the lungs. New Zealand has one of the highest prevalence rates for asthma in the world, with a total estimated cost around NZ$ 825 million per year.
The intrinsic causes of asthma are currently not well understood. Several treatments have been developed, but none of them present a cure for this chronic disease. Most of these treatments pharmacological with side effects sometimes fatal and affecting many patients. Some patients show no response to existing treatments.
ASM contraction is believed to be the main driving mechanism in asthma attacks. The response of ASM in healthy and asthmatic airways seems to be influenced by breathing patterns such as tidal breathing and deep inspiration, with strong differences between healthy and asthmatic airways. Therefore understanding airway mechanics and the dynamic response of ASM in vivo seems to be an essential component in the search for a new alternative in the treatment of asthma.
The proposed research investigates the response of ASM in sensitized models in the presence of imposed oscillations in vivo and in vitro. The results from this study in combination with the previous work done in this area will help to increase the understanding of how
length oscillations affect the response of ASM in healthy and asthmatic subjects.

▼ The Turonian age Ferron sandstone formed in multiple deltas which empty into the Western Interior Seaway, including the Notom delta, which has been shown to contain 6 sequences. A compound incised valley system has been well documented at the base of the youngest sequence 1 in outcrops of the Cretaceous Ferron Notom delta complex in central Utah. That valley was shown to have undergone multiple episodes of cut and fill at high frequency Milankovich scale cyclicity, but correlative marine facies are not exposed. Directly beneath sequence 1, sequence 2 also contains a fluvial valley system. This valley system is particularly well exposed in the most basinward fluvial deposits within parasequence set 6 and can be correlated to coeval marine facies. Previously these deposits had only been documented in regional scale maps and cross sections, and it was interpreted as a single, versus compound valley. This study shows that the older valley is also compound, and more detailed data document the downstream succession of depositional facies comprising the valley fill.
Correlation of 11 measured sections illustrates a basinward increase in tidal facies and reveals distinct lower and upper fluvial valleys, the lower of which feeds a previously documented shoreface facies. This confirms the compound nature of the valley fill in sequence 2. This suggests that the Ferron valleys are compound in nature and correlate with stepped forced regressive shoreline deposits that can be seen in the older shallow-marine strata. This finding demonstrates the importance of non-linear accommodation change in the context of traditional valley fill models.

▼ Head circumference and leg
length are two important markers for disease
outcomes in later life. It has been reported that head circumference values in childhood
may be closely related to the brain development and future intellectual functioning. Short
leg
length in childhood is suggested to have association with an increasing risk of
coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Given the potential childhood
length and
adult disease linkage, it is important to identify the determinants of childhood head
circumference and leg
length. Breastfeeding is suggested to be a potential postnatal factor
that affects head circumference and leg
length. However, some studies examining
impacts of breastfeeding on leg
length and head circumference in childhood reported
inconsistent or null findings, indicating that the association between breastfeeding, head
circumference and leg
length remains controversial. Here we reviewed several studies that investigated the relationship between breastfeeding, head circumference and leg
length, and in some but not all studies there was controlling for the effects of other potential early life influences, including parental height, prenatal factors and other postnatal factors on head circumference and leg
length. Collectively, the illustrations on these relationships would be useful in investigating the leg
length/head circumferencelater
disease outcomes associations.

▼ The effect of near work on the biometric properties of the eye, including the eye’s length and the thickness of the posterior vascular layer were investigated. Short-sighted eyes had greater increases in length and greater thinning of the vascular layer when focused on close objects than did normally-sighted eyes. These changes occurred across the horizontal meridian of the eye and were greatest at the posterior pole. These ocular effects of focusing may partly explain the influence of close work on development of short-sightedness.

▼ This dissertation begins with proposing a novel street Connectivity Indicator (C.I.) to predict transit performance by identifying the role that street network connectivity plays in influencing the service quality of demand responsive feeder transit services. This new C.I. definition is dependent upon the expected shortest path between any two nodes in the network, includes spatial features with transit demand distribution information and is easy to calculate for any given service area. Subsequently, a methodology to identify and locate critical links within a grid street system for operating feeder transit services is also developed. A 'critical' street link causes the largest change in transit performance due to the link's removal or addition to an existing network. The most important contribution of this section on link criticality is to present a simple closed-form analytical formula in locating the critical link(s) for a grid street network system of 'any' size. Easily computable formulas have been provided and validated by simulation analyses. Another related model is proposed to compute the optimal grid street spacing that would enhance performance of a demand responsive feeder transit system. The model is tested using simulation. Lastly, an analytical model is also developed for estimating optimal service cycle
length or headway of a demand responsive feeder transit service designed to serve passengers, especially during peak periods of demand.
Simulation analyses over a range of networks have been conducted to validate the new C.I. definition. Results show a desirable monotonic relationship between transit performance and the proposed C.I., whose values are directly proportional and therefore good predictors of the transit performance, outperforming other available indicators, typically used by planners. Further, useful insights indicate a monotonic decrease in link criticality as we depart from the centrally located links to those located at boundaries. Using a real case example from Denver of the Call-n-Ride system operating similar to a demand responsive feeder transit, optimal cycle lengths differed very modestly from those computed using the model. Extensive simulations performed for different sets of feeder service areas and demand densities, further validated the optimal cycle
length model.

▼ Background: Running is one of the most popular branches of athletics. Running has several physiological benefits, such as a higher maximal oxygen consumption, increased muscle mass and reduced blood pressure. There have been plenty of discussions about what the most efficient running technique might be, should you use a short step length and a high step frequency or vice versa. It is generally known that you can increase your running speed by increasing your step frequency or your step length, and also both. However, maximal speed is achieved by increasing your step frequency rather than your step length. For endurance runners it is important to have a good running economy, because runners with a good running economy use less energy while running, and therefore require less oxygen than a runner with poor running economy. Previous research have not found any correlations between the length of the leg with step frequency or step length. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine whether there are any significant correlations between the length of the leg in relation to the step frequency or the step length while running in different speeds. Method: 15 trained males participated in this correlation study. All participants’ leg length were measured with a measuring tape. Three running trials, with the speeds of 12, 16 and 20 km/h were performed on a treadmill during 1 minute each. Between each trial the participants rested for 3 minutes. The trials were recorded with a video camera, and the participants individual step frequency, step length and heel or fore foot strike were collected. Persons coefficient of correlation test was used to analyze if there were any significant correlations between the length of the leg with step frequency and step length. Also a paired samples T test was performed to see if there was a significant increase between step frequency and step length with the speeds. Result: There were no significant correlations (p>0,05) found between the length of the leg and the step frequency or the length of the leg and step length in any of the different speeds. The paired samples t-test showed a significant (p<0,001) increase in step frequency and step length with the different speeds. Conclusion: In conclusion, according to the present study, there were no significant correlations found between the length of the leg with step frequency or step length, which is in consensus with previous research. Therefore, it is not advisable to predict an individual’s step length based on their leg length. There are various factors involved in determining a person’s step length and step frequency, and this study showed that running speed is one important factor. This information may be useful for runners and their coaches to apply, so they avoid making interventions involving alternations in the runners step length based on their body dimensions, such as leg length.

▼ One of the primary tasks of the mobile system designers in order to support high density of devices in a CDMA system is to create a code sequence with a capacity for large number of spreading code sequences having low cross-correlation values between them, in order to ensure accommodation of large number of users and to minimise the effect of multiple access interference. In this research, the design for a novel hybrid orthogonal very large set (HOVLS) code sequence is proposed for high density mobile application scenarios. The design and development of both fixed and variable spreading factor code sequences are presented in this thesis. Both type of code sequences have been implemented via simulation using Matlab/Simulink. The performance of the code sequences has been evaluated and compared with that of existing code sequences. The proposed code sequences are more advantageous for high density mobile networks. The unique feature of the fixed length HOVLS code sequence is that its ACF, CCF, and BER performances are similar to that of orthogonal Gold code sequence and orthogonal m-sequence under Rayleigh flat and frequency selective fading channel conditions while having a significantly higher capacity than those orthogonal code sequences. The proposed HOVLS code sequence could support 134 different cells which is more than twice than that of orthogonal Gold code sequence and orthogonal m-sequence. To the knowledge of the author, this is the largest reported family size in the literature for an orthogonal code sequence for CDMA applications. In order to support variable data rate, fixed length HOVLS code sequence was developed into orthogonal variable spreading factor code sequence. It is shown that the proposed OVSF code sequence has slightly better CCF than those of OVSF Gold code sequence and m-sequence in terms of CM (correlation margin). The ACF of the proposed OVSF code sequence is similar to those of OVSF Gold code sequence and m-sequence. The proposed OVSF code sequence possesses comparable BER performance to those of orthogonal Gold code sequence and orthogonal m-sequence under flat fading channel condition. Whereas, the BER performance of the proposed OVSF code sequence is slightly better than that of Gold code sequence and OVSF m-sequence under frequency selective fading channel. Therefore, the proposed HOVLS code sequence is appropriate code sequence in CDMA systems than those of orthogonal Gold code sequence and orthogonal m-sequence for both fixed and variable rate high density network applications.

▼ This thesis presents Overhead Contact Line System design for Indode station. Overhead Contact
System (OCS) is an essential interface between fixed installation and moving energy consumer
for electric railway. Its design depends on mechanical, electrical and environmental loads.
Therefore proper design and standard of overhead contact line system for a particular
environment according to specific service requirement is necessary. In this work detailed
technical design of overhead contact system for Indode station as reference to review other
overhead contact line system design in Ethiopia Railway is done.
In this thesis first overhead contact system for electrified root is modeled based on bottom to top
approach. Trolley and simple catenary of both semi and auto compensated Overhead Contact
System is modeled. Traction impendence of overhead contact system especially double track of
simple catenary equivalent impendence is determined. Then based on this model and
meteorological data, maximum span
length, critical span
length, maximum sag height, and
maximum anchoring
length are derived and determined. From this determined parameter and site
plan of Indode station, Overhead contact system plan is prepared according to planning rules and

▼ The domain of computer music is an interesting area which combines computer science and music art. We propose a music accompaniment system using a variable-
length genetic algorithm. Via the system one can make the music corresponded to his demands. In the style music accompaniment we analyze some important characteristic of pop music, and propose a new chromosome representation scheme to include the concept of rhyme, chord and melody. Chord progression is used as one of the evaluation criterions in this thesis.
The system allows a user to input melody, to select emotion and rhyme, and the system will automatically generate the appropriate accompaniment based on the database compiled from some music theory relating to the chord progression. In addition, the system allows a user to select his favorite accompaniment that generated by the system. Based on the user selected accompaniment the system will generate similar accompaniments for the user.

▼ This study aims to study the species composition and distribution of chaetognaths in the waters surrounding Taiwan January 2005 to July 2006, and to explore the relationship between environmental factors and their dynamic distribution. Waters surrounding Taiwan are affected by monsoons and water masses. In winter, the northwestern Taiwan area is under the impact of low-temperature low-salinity China Coastal Current, but in summer, Taiwan Strait is affected by South China Sea Current going northward with high-temperature and high-salinity. As for eastern waters of Taiwan, Kuroshio current passes throughout the year so it is high-temperature and high-salinity. In July 2006, when three typhoons struck Taiwan, excessive fresh water from land flowed into the ocean and stations along the coast where low in salinity. This study identified a total of 28 species of chaetognath under 14 genera of 4 families, with average abundance at 475 ± 35 ind./100m3, which shows an obvious change related to seasons, relatively low in winter and spring and high in summer and fall. The seven most dominant species are: Flaccisagitta enflata, Serratosagitta pacifica, Zonosagitta littoralis, Pterosagitta draco, Aidanosagitta regularis, Aidanosagitta bedfordii and Aidanosagitta neglecta, accounting for 85% of the total abundance. The distribution of chaetognath in waters surrounding Taiwan is affected by the different water masses. The northwestern area where China Coastal Current passes through has high abundance but less number and low Shannon diversity index, but the eastern and southern waters dominated by Kuroshio current shows a completely different trend. From the results of multiple regression analysis, it is found that the abundance of chaetognath and F. enflata are in positive correlation with that of the abundance of copepod, indicating that the quantity of food might be a factor affecting the distribution of chaetognath. The second dominant species S. pacifica has no relation with hydrographic or biological factors, and the third dominant species Z. littoralis is in negative correlation with temperature and salinity. Along with the results of indicator species analysis, Z. littoralis can possibly be used as indicators species of China Coastal Current. The three predominant species are dominated by the Stage I and significantly less in other growth stages. The average body lengths (ABL) of F. enflata and S. pacifica are the larger in spring and smaller in fall, with obvious changes with seasons, but that of Z. littoralis is larger in winter and summer and smaller in spring and fall. Different water masses have impacts on distribution of weight mean stage (WMS) and ABL of chaetognath; for example, F. enflata and S. pacifica with the equivalent growth have larger bodies in Kuroshio current than in China Coastal Current, but Z. littoralis which prefers cold water shows an opposite trend. In addition, this study found that abundance, species, Shannon diversity index, WMS and ABL of chaetognath has no differences between day and night,…

▼ The Acentropinae represents a species-rich crambid group with more than 700 species distributed in all the zoogeographic regions except Antarctica, and the highest diversity occurs in the Oriental, Indo-Autralian and Neotropical regions. Most caterpillars of Acentropinae are widely adapted to feed on vegetation in different types of aquatic environments, such as ponds, streams and rivers. However, some of them are known to utilize mosses on land. Therefore the evolutionary relationships between the terrestrial and aquatic lineage become intriguing. The genus Paracymoriza Warren, 1890, is a moderate-sized acentropine genus comprising 39 species ranging throughout southeast and east Asia. Historically the genus was often confused with many unrelated genera due to the superficial resemblance in wing maculation, which is termed the ânymphuliform wing patternâ. The genus is currently divided into 8 species groups, with 5 of them known having aquatic immature stages, while the others having terrestrial immatures. The fact that Paracymoriza includes both truly aquatic and terrestrial species represents a unique case for the Lepidoptera, thus making the monophyly of the genus doubtful. In the present study, a phylogenetic hypothesis Paracymoriza was reconstructed by using morphological characters including wing pattern and immature stage characters obtained from 63 species representing 25 acentropine genera. The results suggest that Paracymoriza is monophyletic. The genus is composed of two major clades: one aquatic, and the other terrestrial. It suggests that Paracymoriza represents a unique example with amphibious immature stage in the Lepidoptera although the tree support values of this phylogenetic hypothesis remains relatively weak due to large amount of homoplasious characters.

▼ Spontaneous human speech is peppered with errors and disfluencies. Previous research has demonstrated that such errors and disfluencies are not always detrimental to comprehension. When confronted with a filled pause, listener's are able to make predictions about upcoming speech. But, does the
length of the edit interval affect how far listener's back-track through given information in order to make a prediction about the repair? The present experiment examines the on-line effect of fillers on reference comprehension in order to investigate whether edit-
length has a direct effect on the listener when deciding how far to back-track through the information already heard in order to make a prediction about the upcoming speech. Participants eye-movements were tracked whilst they were presented with visual and auditory stimuli. Auditory stimuli involved disfluencies with either a long edit interval (830ms silence) or a short edit interval (415ms silence) preceded by an editing expression uh. Relative to the two word reparanda, listener's predicted that a no-change repair would be made after hearing a filler followed by a short edit-interval and that a repair involving a change in the word immediately preceding the filler would be made after hearing a filler followed by a long edit-interval. The study demonstrates that edit-
length does have an effect on the type of predictions made by listener's. However, regardless of edit-
length, listener's do not tend to back-track when making predictions. Rather, they expect speaker's to interrupt themselves immediately after an error has occurred.

▼ Every port has its unique design and hydrographic conditions that when a vessel is preparing to inbound or outbound of a harbor the local pilot will help the captain to maneuver the vessel against the winds and currents to pass safely the breakwater. This research applies the AIS (Automatic Identification System) of vessels and sea states to search for their relationships. The AIS data includes ship speed, course, heading, size, latitude, longitude, time etc. Sea states include winds, currents, tides, and waves. As a navigation controller at Kaohsiung Second Port, my experiences suggest that vessels within 8 nautical miles off breakwater is a reasonable distance for my study. The data are selected from a huge data base of the 15 to 16 of every month in 2015.
The first step is to check the data quality. Basic statistic boxplot is applied to AIS data. Cruise tracks are plotted for inbound and outbound vessels. The anchored vessels are eliminated. The basic data quality control shows large amount of AIS are no good for further analysis. Time series of sea states data and basic statistics were carried out. Selected data from these two data sets are combined for correlation coefficient and Principle Component Analysis.
We divided ship
length of every 50 m as a category, and correlated with sea states. The results show that winds and currents are closely correlated with headings and ship speeds. The differences of headings to courses are negatively correlated to currents of the north-south direction. Also, the differences get larger when in slow ship speed. However, the differences of heading to courses of ship size of over 350m are mainly related to winds. For the correlation of winds and currents itself, tidal current dominated when wind is small and wind has little influence to the currents.

▼ The mechanism by which voltage-gated potassium ion
(Kv) channels respond to changes in membrane polarization is one of
the most widely studied yet least understood aspects of Kv
channels. The voltage sensing S4 helix contains 4-7 basic residues
that form an electrostatic interaction network with the acidic
residues in the S2 and S3 helices to stabilize the open and the
closed state in response to voltage change. Previous studies have
demonstrated the importance of S3-S4 loop length and composition in
shaping the voltage response of Kv channels. In this thesis, I have
undertaken a series of mutagenesis experiments on the mouse Kv1.2
(V50 approximately -13 mV) and a jellyfish Kv1 channel jShak1 (V50
approximately +26 mV) to evaluate how the S3-S4 loop affects the
voltage sensitivity and regulates the interaction within the VSD in
two different channel backgrounds. I have mutated the S3-S4 loop by
changing the length and composition and have mutated an acidic
residue on the S2 helix that stabilizes the open state by forming
salt bridges with basic residues of the S4 helix. In most Kv1
family channels this residue is glutamate (E226 in mouse, E283 in
D. melanogaster Shaker), but in the jellyfish channel it is
asparagine (N227). I have also made pairwise combinations of the
loop-mutants and the S2 mutants to evaluate how their effects
interact. Our study found that the effects of the loop mutations on
the two channels are significantly different, both in terms of loop
length and composition, indicating that the loops affect the
propensity for channel opening through factors other than simple
constraints on relative movement of S3 and S4. Mutations in the S2
residue reveal the packing of the helices in the two channels
differs significantly - in the mouse Kv1.2 mutations of E226 to
shorter and less charged residues creates an omega pore through the
voltage sensing domain, whereas mutation of N227 in jShak1 leads to
strong interactions between the effects of shortening the S3-S4
loop and increasing the size of the residue 227 side-chain,
indicating a tighter packing of the helices in jShak1 than in mouse
Kv1.2.

▼ Increasing demand for energy in the world has made
industries to look for economically efficient methods to produce
energy. One possible approach is to increase natural gas
productions, due to its cleanliness and lower price. However,
energy consumption of the cryogenic processes is high in natural
gas processing plants. Adsorptive separations are becoming
widespread in various industries such as oil and gas as a promising
alternative to the conventional cryogenic processes. Activated
carbons are among the most attractive porous materials used in
adsorption processes, due to their high internal surface areas and
ease of availability in the market. They exhibit bimodal pore size
distributions, comprising microporous structure throughout a
network of larger macropores. This makes them interesting and
challenging adsorbents in adsorption studies. The separation of
ethane from natural gas is one of the important processes in gas
processing plants. Ethane is highly needed as feedstock for
ethylene production plants. In this thesis, adsorption kinetics of
ethane on activated carbon was studied using Zero Length Column
(ZLC) technique. ZLC is a useful chromatographic method to study
equilibrium and kinetics of adsorption. It is known as a fast and
easy lab-scale technique for adsorbent screenings and diffusion
studies. In ZLC, external heat and mass transfer resistances and
dispersion are eliminated by the use of low adsorbate
concentration, small amount of adsorbent and high flow rates. In
the experiments, the adsorbent sample is first pre-equilibrated
with the test gas for a sufficient time. The kinetics and
equilibrium information can be obtained from the desorption curve
when the flow is switched to pure purge gas under controlled
conditions. The experimental set-up was developed during this
project. System characterization experiments such as dead volume
measurements, detector selection, detector's response time
calculations were performed and are discussed in detail. ZLC
measurements were carried out to study the controlling diffusion
mechanism and obtain the diffusivity values. By performing low
concentration experiments, diffusion in macropores found to be the
controlling resistance. Among the various mechanisms, molecular and
Knudsen diffusion were identified to be important.

▼ The use of variable-length codes to construct capacity
approaching constrained sequence codes is examined. Constrained
sequence codes are commonly used for digital storage and
transmission, but have historically been implemented using block
codes. A new technique is developed for constructing
variable-length constrained sequence codes. These codes are based
on Huffman encoding various partial extensions, a technique that is
shown to be optimal in the sense that no other technique can result
in a higher code rate given the same partial extension. Partial
extensions are exhaustively searched in order to identify the
highest rate code within a particular bound. Examples of the
technique are provided for various constraints, including (d,k) and
DC-free constraints. These examples are shown to have average rates
within 1% of capacity for their respective constraints. Tables are
also provided listing the optimal sourceword to codeword length
mappings for various other constraints.

▼ Patient demographics and characteristics are essential components that often determine
length of stay in hospice. Race, age, gender, health insurance status, income level, and location of hospice care services are common indicators associated with differing lengths of stay. Hospice care demand has been on the rise, and exploring the conditions that affect a patient's
length of stay is essential for assessment as well as potential policy recommendations. This study uses Medicare hospice services data from 2006 to 2014 to examine how race, age, gender, health insurance status, income level, and location before entering acute care, are associated with acute care lengths of stay. Overall, this study found that race, age, gender, health insurance status, and income level have a statistically significant association with whether a patient was from homebased or from facility-based hospice. These findings suggest that racial disparities remain a relevant matter in access to hospice and palliative care, which can assist future research in developing knowledge about the association of
length of stay in hospice care and patient characteristics.

▼ This work examines geometric properties of generalized lamplighter groups. The thesis contains two parts. The first part gives an elementary account of Bartholdi, Neuhauser and Woess's result that the Cayley graphs of a family of metabelian groups can be realized as 1-skeleta of horocyclic products of trees, extends the result to a wider family of groups (including an infinite valence case, like Z ≀ Z), and makes the translation between the algebraic and geometric descriptions explicit. The second part examines important geometric properties of Baumslag and Remeslennikov's metabelian group [GAMMA]2 = a, s, t | [a, at ] = 1, [s, t] = 1, a s = aat . We show that the Cayley 2-complex of a suitable presentation of [GAMMA]2 is a horocyclic product of three infinitely branching trees. We prove that the subgroup generated by a is undistorted in [GAMMA]2 . Finally, we reduce the question of finding an upper bound on the filling
length function of [GAMMA]2 to a combinatorial question about propagating configurations on a two-dimensional rhombic grid.

▼ The lymphatic system returns interstitial fluid back to the blood circulation. They
have a network of vessels with numerous lymphangions, the segment of lymphatic
vessel between two unidirectional valves. The valves aid in transporting lymph against a
pressure gradient, in addition to the lymphangion pump which exhibit cyclical variations
in diameter. Like blood vessels, baseline lymphatic tone is regulated with changes in
transmural pressure; however, the transient response of lymphatic diastolic diameter
following changes in transmural pressure has not been studied. The lymphangion pump
is often described using cardiac analogies. However, since an active system empties into
another active system in a lymphatic vessel, the analogy cannot characterize the
principles governing optimal lymphatic vessel function. Furthermore, to optimize lymph
flow there is also a need to characterize the lymphatic network structure.
To characterize the transient diameter response of lymphatic segment, we used
post-nodal bovine mesenteric lymphangions in an isobaric preparation and measured the diameter response to a step change in pressure. An immediate active reduction in enddiastolic
diameter with each incremental increase in pressure was observed.
To identify the principles governing optimal lymphatic vessel function, we
applied the result obtained from optimizing the interaction of the heart-arterial system to
measured lymphangion pressure-volume relationships. We assumed that the slope of end
systolic pressure-volume relationship (Emax) is equal to the slope of end-diastolic
relationship (Emin) above a cutoff pressure and Emax>Emin below the cutoff pressure.
Unlike the heart, we found that stroke work is not optimized when Emax = Emin. However,
there is a region where lymph flow is insensitive to changes in transmural pressure.
To characterize the lymphatic network structure, we used an approximation of
time-varying elastance model. We found there is an optimal
length for the lymphangion
when it produces maximal flow. To develop a fractal network model, we determined the
ratio of radius and ratio of
length of lymphangion at a confluence. Using conservation of
mass and certain simplifying assumptions, we showed that the ratio of radius, as well as
ratio of
length of upstream lymphangion, to the downstream lymphangion at confluences
is 1.26.

▼ The focus of this thesis is to investigate the role of voice pitch (the perception of fundamental frequency and/or corresponding harmonics) and apparent vocal tract length (VTL-the perception of the vocal tract resonances i.e. formant frequencies) in perceptions of trustworthiness and other related social attributions. Past research has found that women trust men with relatively higher pitched voices as long-term romantic partners. People with relatively higher pitched voices are also judged as more cooperative than people with relatively lower pitched voices. However, women choose men with relatively lower pitched voices when asked to select which leaders are more trustworthy and make better economic decisions. In study 1, I used “The Trust Game” to determine whether women trust men with higher or lower pitched voices to evenly divide a sum of money. Women trusted men with relatively higher pitched voices more often. Thus, even though men with lower pitched voices are more often elected to office, and are CEOs of larger companies that make more money, women trust men with relatively low pitched voices less than men with relatively high pitched voices to equitably distribute money.
Surprisingly, no studies have examined the relationship between VTL and trust, but one recent study examined the relationship between VTL and perceptions of cooperation. In study 2, I was the first to test the role of voice pitch and VTL on perceptions of trust and cooperation. In general, people with higher frequency voices (high pitch and a shorter VTL) were relatively more cooperative and trustworthy than people with lower frequency voices (low pitch and a longer VTL). Despite correlations between the effects of voice frequency manipulations on ratings of trustworthiness and cooperativeness, the amount to which people thought pitch and VTL affected cooperativeness and trustworthiness was different enough to determine that these two constructs overlap, but are not synonymous.
Together, these studies show that despite the fact that masculine men tend to win political elections and run large and successful companies, they are viewed as uncooperative and untrustworthy. Future research should investigate if those who win political elections and run successful companies do so because they keep more than their fair share of money.

▼ Improved mortality rates following pancreaticoduodenectomy by high volume surgeons and hospitals have been well documented, but less is known about the impact of such volumes on
length of stay and cost. This study uses data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to examine the effect of surgeon and hospital volume on mortality,
length of stay, and cost following pancreaticoduodenectomy while controlling for patient specific factors. Data included 3,137 pancreaticoduodenectomies from the NIS performed between 2004-2008. Using logistic and generalized linear regression models, the relationship between surgeon volume, hospital volume, and post-operative mortality,
length of stay, and cost was estimated while accounting for patient factors. Propensity score matching was used to address potential covariate imbalance. After controlling for patient characteristics, patients of high volume surgeons at high volume hospitals had a significantly lower risk of mortality compared to any other group (2.7% vs. 6.0%, p = 0.016). Patients of high volume surgeons at high volume hospitals also had a five day shorter
length of stay (p < 0.001), as well as significantly lower costs ($12,159, p < 0.001). The results of this study, which simultaneously accounted for surgeon volume, hospital volume, and potential confounding patient characteristics, suggest that both surgeon and hospital volume have a significant effect on outcomes following pancreaticoduodenectomy, affecting not only mortality rates but also lengths of stay and costs.

▼ Patients can face adverse events after colorectal surgery in a hospital. These adverse events include 30-day readmission, 30-day mortality, prolonged
length of stay and complications after surgery. Predicting these events based on clinical and demographic data is critical for pre and post-operative surgical intervention. In this thesis, we investigate predictive analytics for adverse events for patients undergoing colorectal surgery. For the design, development and implementation of predictive analytics we use real life data provided by a prominent hospital system located in the Northeastern region of Pennsylvania. To protect the proprietary aspects of the data, all the variables in the dataset are de-identified. The longitudinal dataset consists of 8150 original records and 322 attributes from August 2006 to October 2014. In addition, the data related to the provider’s behaviors with respect to colorectal surgery is also used.
The first step in this thesis addresses data cleaning and filling in the missing values. We use several statistical methods to perform these tasks. As the attribute set is large using subjective as well as statistical means we reduce the dimensionality to 120 attributes. We investigate four methodologies, including Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Method and Logistic Regression for predictive analytics. We construct regression models with the four methodologies, the models are either tree-based or classifying models. After the models are constructed, we conduct comparative analysis of the methodologies based on certain performance criteria, and select the most accurate model for further study. We find that Gradient Boosting Method (GBM) has the best performance. We examine the most important predictors in the selected model, look for predictor features, and investigate intrinsic implications behind the predictors. Our conclusions point to the fact that patient’s health condition and surgery information are the most important factors leading to adverse events. We suggest areas of future research.
Most of the past work in colorectal surgical adverse event prediction deals with retrospective data collected from several hospitals across several years. In addition, a fairly large number of specific inputs from surgeons are also used. This puts considerable burden on the hospital staff to collect data. Our model is developed using the data from only one hospital, with the general inputs from the physicians and surgeons that are normally entered. This simplifies the data collection and usage.
The results we have obtained are comparable to the national statistics from the earlier models. However, we need to study several hospitals to validate our model and evaluate its efficacy.

▼ Implementation of bedside rounds enhances communication and collaboration between physicians and nurses, resulting in improved clinical outcomes. Yet, the literature demonstrates that it remains difficult for nurses to attend rounds if they don't know when they are happening. This project aimed to: increase nurses' presence, participation and contribution at bedside rounds in a pediatric acute care unit, enhance clinical teamwork and collaboration, and improve quality outcomes. Nurses carried a pager so that physicians could alert them of rounds. Perception of teamwork and collaboration was assessed via surveys pre- and post- intervention as well as the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI )'s annual survery evaluating RN and MD interactions. Other quality outcome measures included
length of stay and patient satisfaction through Press GaneyTM surveys. Findings demonstrated that when nurses were notified in advance, their participation in rounds increased from 44.4 to 73%.
Length of stay decreased from 2.5 days prior to the project to an average of 2.10 during the project. Scores on inpatient satisfaction surveys increased from 82.4 to 92.2%, and nursing communication improved from 83.3 to 95.65%. Interprofessional collaboration as reflected by the inclusion of nurses at bedside rounds led to positive outcomes in patient care. Increasing nurses' presence and providing them with a role in patient care rounds is an important step towards fostering teamwork and collaboration with physicians and enhancing family-centered care in a pediatric inpatient setting. Further research measuring the impact of interprofessional collaboration in healthcare is needed.

▼ In this dissertation, the Phase-Type (PH) distribution is studied with consideration of covariates to model and investigate the patient flow information. The
length-of-stay (LOS) data of patients with distinct diseases are analyzed in terms of the complete hospital stay or the visit in each department respectively. By PH distribution modeling, the patients clustering and the influences of each covariate are obtained. Comparisons and evaluations among different diseases, different LOS groups, distinct transfer routes and impacts of covariates are implemented.
First, we apply the Coxian PH distributions for fitting the patient flow information collected in a hospital of patients of distinct diseases, including headache, liveborn infant, alcohol abuse, acute upper respiratory infection, and secondary cataract. Based on the results obtained by fitting Coxian PH distributions to the LOS data, the patients can be divided into different groups. The sharing common characteristics, readmission rates, and discharge destinations are evaluated and compared among different disease.
Second, we use the Coxian PH distributions with covariates to fit the patient flow information of both geriatric patients and Alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients collected in a hospital. The influences of the covariates of age, gender, admission type, admit source, and financial class on LOS are assessed and compared through Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithms. The estimated distributions can classify those patients into different LOS groups and the estimated coefficients and the statistical significance of covariate effects are also achieved and analyzed.
Last, the Coxian PH distributions are integrated in an aggregated Markov chain to model the sequences of LOS in each department that geriatric patients visit during their hospital stay. The aggregated PH distribution is fitted to the intra-hospital transfer flow route by using Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) to obtain the transition rates within each department and transfer rates among departments. The associations between shared characteristics and the transfer routes are also verified.
We conclude that the analysis of associations between LOS groups and readmission rates can help avoid waste of sources. The top predictors are also studied with respect to practical reasons, which may provide guideline for decision-making and resource allocation in healthcare field. The intra-transfer routes within a hospital are associated with the characteristics of patients at admission and discharge.
