▼ The aim of my comparative study is to examine how the nature of the
picaresque contributed to the success of the two novels. How both Twain and Salinger
could make the best of the possibilities provided by this literary genre. The first chapter
of this thesis will offer a general overview of the nature of the picaresque. In my
opinion when studying a piece of literature it is very important to investigate the
historical background and the period in which it was written. Therefore, I will examine
the historical, social and economic background of both Twain’s era and Salinger’s era.
Still in the first chapter, I will study the general characteristic features of the picaro
through the specific examples provided by Huck Finn and Holden Caulfield. I will
demonstrate how the structure of the picaresque served the authors’ purposes and what
functions the
journey itself provides. The second chapter contains a detailed
comparison of the characterization of Huck Finn and Holden Caulfield. The third
chapter will focus on the recurring themes of loneliness and the journeys as the means
of searching for an adult model to follow. I will follow the heroes’ journeys in order to
compare how they try to make contacts with different members of society and how they
relate to challenges, and to the obstacles they have to face in order to find their places in
life. In the last chapter, I will examine the novels as social satires, and make comments
on the style and the language of the books.

▼ Voyages to the underworld, upperworld, and worlds aside have historically populated global literary and theological traditions. Any analysis of an otherworld voyage must take into consideration the deeply set theological origins of this trope. However, in addition to the more traditional underworld, upperworld, and Purgatory voyages there exists a fourth type of otherworld
journey: the fantastic. The fantastic otherworld
journey utilizes many of the conventions of these other journeys, but differs in its agenda. The purpose of the fantastic otherworld
journey is not to convert, but rather to appeal to the imagination. Cartoon Network’s
Over the Garden Wall (2014) is a contemporary example of a fantastic otherworld
journey. The miniseries offers an extended exploration of a uniquely Americana otherworld, referred to in the show as the Unknown.
Over the Garden Wall is concerned less with the leaving-and-returning narrative of more traditional otherworld journeys, and more with a being-and-returning narrative structure instead. While more traditional otherworld journeys hinge much of their emphasis on the character’s departure from the commonsense reality and arrival in and navigation of the otherworld,
OtGW opens in the in-between: with two boys lost in the woods. By analyzing the otherworld voyaging tradition through an animation studies lens, the otherworld becomes a shared audiovisual space in which protagonist and spectator experiences intersect. Examining this intersection through Slavoj Žižek’s concept of “anamorphosis” and Scott McCloud’s concept of “closure” reveals how the animated otherworld, and more specifically the Unknown, participates in and diverges from the traditional otherworld
journey.

▼ This study tries to investigate the message reception of The
Journey Life 101 Print
Serial Drama of the Modeling and Reinforcement to Combat HIV/AIDS project of Addis
Ababa University (MARCH AAU). In order to get a deep understanding of the issue in
focus, a qualitative research design is employed. To generate appropriate data for the
study, an equal number of male and female, totaling, forty, research participants from all
faculties of the university were selected purposively based on the criterion of being a
regular follower of the medium under study. The data was collected primarily through six
Focus Group Discussions which had categories based on seniority and place of residence
before joining the campus. In-depth individual interviews with twelve active Focus Group
Discussion participants were used to triangulate the data. In-depth interview with
program producers and document analysis were also included to enrich the data. The
study revealed that the medium has popularity in the community as well as out of the
community. This is attributed to the print nature of the medium and also the well thought
out design of presentation. The use of concise expressions blended with images
contributed to the reception of the message. In addition, its comic book format has played
a significant role in catching the attention of the audience. However, the interpretation of
the message is found to have been negotiated and even at times opposed by the majority
of participants. The first reason given is that the magazine focuses only on the assumed
“Arada” or ‘Modern’ group of the community by ignoring the other significant groups.
The Second reason is that the story does not have positive role models that could
manifest strong self-efficacy. The third reason given is that some of the transitional
characters use “perfect English” beyond the reach of the readers. The colloquial nature
of the Amharic language used is also found to be a factor that limits the message
reception. Besides, the fact that none of the characters are getting immediate punishment
for their negative behavior is found to be sending the wrong message to the target
audience. The length of publication and irregular distribution time, which affected the
serial nature of the medium, has also affected the message interpretation. Negative
portrayal of both sexes and distorting the university’s and the students’ image are
considered to be potential limitations for the message interpretation.

▼ Words are very important. They say a lot about a person when
they are uttered. Words can build up a person or a nation. On the
other hand, it can destroy or annihilate a person’s dignity or a
whole community. St. James says it all when he notes, The tongue
is placed among our members as a world of iniquity. It stains the
whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature and is itself set on fire
by hell. – James 3:5b – 6. Right at the beginning of creation, we
see the effectiveness of the word of God. The bible tells us that,
“In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of
the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
Then God said, Let there be light and there was light – Gen. 1:1-3.
The importance of the word of God cannot be over emphasised.
It is very powerful and gives life. Jesus also adds his voice to the
importance of the word of God when he says, Do not think that
I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not
to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth
pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from
the law until all is accomplished – Matt.5:17-18.
It is against this back drop that the authors have taken upon
themselves to share these reflections on the word of God. The
Word of God: A lamp to our feet is collections of reflections on
Sunday readings and solemnities and feasts from cycle or year A.
This book is volume II, to
The Word of God: A Guide to our spiritual Journey towards

It is the prayer of the authors that this book will be useful for

▼ This thesis is a study of a
journey in the deep mystery of the eastern harbor on the Mediterranean sea in the city of Alexandria. For
Herodotus, the four major elements for civilizationâ s development overtime are water, air, land, and fire. In this project, the effort is made to connect three of the four elements within an architectural context: â Underwater museumâ .
The building orientation, shape and location allow a discovery of the building elements and shape consequently while participating in the
building visit. From street level, the building can be seen as a simple curved wall on the harbor facing the sea. While pursuing the passage in
the
journey, the building shape and components start to build the experience. Different lighting conditions, vertical and horizontal circulation methods, building form and structure are used to direct the
journey starting from sky and land, through water, to underwater, then finally discovering the ruins at the seabed.

▼ Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, and it is expected that the prevalence of asthma will only increase in the coming years (Masoli et al., 2004). Medical self-management by asthma patients will be of essential importance to keep the burden of disease as low as possible. Medical self-management is critical in obtaining asthma control. Research suggests that the majority of patients can obtain asthma control, yet most adults are still living with uncontrolled asthma. Both extensive literature research and qualitative research with asthma patients and healthcare providers were executed to uncover what the barriers are that asthma patients face in medical asthma self-management. The research uncovered three main problems that form barriers to efficient self-management.: beliefs, low motivation, and inability. Each of these problems has its underlying causes. Beliefs are caused by (1) paternalistic care, (2) lack of stimulation, (3) shortcomings in knowledge sources. Low motivation is the result of (1) paternalistic care, (2) lack of awareness, (3) discouragement due to inadequate tools. At last, inability is caused by (1) lack of knowledge, (2) lack of skills (3) lack of insight. Several opportunity areas to enhance the self-management of asthma patients were discovered: (a) patient education, (b) self-tailoring, and (c) increasing competence. Patient education can be enhanced by creating awareness and providing a better knowledge source through (1) personalization, (2) spreading knowledge. Enabling the patient to self-tailor can induce more active participation of the patient. Increasing the asthma patient’s competence can be done by (1) increasing self-knowledge (2) enabling action. To overcome the barriers to self-management a design was proposed: vea. Vea consists of an app and a physical product. The app enables the user to set goals and supports the user to achieve these goals. Through working on the goals, the app learns about the user and gets personalized. The physical device supports the app by measuring the air quality in the home of the user and gives feedback on this. Key user benefits of the design are: Personalization Vea is designed to match the patients’ needs. Through personalizing its approach and content, the app becomes relevant to the user. Being in control The user is in charge of the goals they want to achieve. The app assists them by making the once invisible complaints and effects of self-management explicit. Increased capability Vea provides structured tools that increase the capability of the user to self-manage their asthma. Through seamlessly collecting data and providing relevant feedback and tips, the user is motivated and capable of acting. User evaluation demonstrated that the proposed design is undoubtedly promising. Both asthma patients and general practitioners indicated that the design could lead to increased insight, motivation, and enhanced…

▼ This thesis is a reflection on my multi-disciplinary practice as a performing singer-songwriter and visual artist. The live performances I have made as a singer-songwriter provide the context for my research investigation into a relationship between performer, audience and environment developed in real-time. Research is practice-based and necessarily non-linear; triangulating audio, visual and textual languages in a polyphony of voicings that allows room for interpretation between methods of working. Underpinning this research is my experience as an artist-in-residence with the Sambaa K’e Dene, a traditionally nomadic community of First Nations Canadians located in the Western Arctic. Development of music, drawing and printmaking projects with the Dene community, and first-hand experience of the Dene’s intimate relationship with the land, shaped my subsequent journey as a travelling musician in British Columbia and Alberta. The song performances I made as a travelling musician provide the context for research into what I am calling ‘creative encounter’; a relationship between performer, audience and environment that develops collaboratively in real-time. Key areas of research include embodiment, embodied learning/practice, as a troubadour I am both ‘method’ and ‘medium’; qualities of ‘liveness’, ‘spontaneity’, ‘flow’ and ‘feel’ in an experiential process, and the transformative potential of song performance to become a conduit for connection.

▼ Outdoor educators, nature-based tourism guides and private recreationalists make use
of wilderness river areas for extended journeys. The justification for running such
trips commonly involves the potential ‘experience’ that it affords participants. Yet
the experiences themselves are often unique, individual and difficult to describe.
While ‘the experience’ is commonly used as a justification for such journeys,
experience itself does not always appear to be well understood or easily articulated.
This research project explores participant descriptions of meaningful experiences on
a wilderness river journey, in order to answer the questions ‘what forms of
meaningful experiences might occur on a wilderness river journey?’, ‘what
components of the journey facilitate those meaningful experiences?’, ‘what is the
role of the wilderness landscape itself in facilitating those experiences?’, and ‘what is
the potential value of meaningful wilderness experiences subsequent upon returning
to everyday life?’. The research uses a phenomenological approach to elucidate
individual perceptions of meaningful experiences, and then combines the
recollections to reveal the commonalities within those experiences. Using interviews,
journals, observations and follow-up emails from 32 participants on eight Franklin
River (ten day) trips, the project moves from the individual to the collective, to
identify and describe the qualities and essences of meaningful experiences on a
wilderness river journey.
The research identifies two recurrent key ‘streams of experience’. These involve a
feeling of humility and being alive to the present. By interrogating the thematic
structure of participant descriptions surrounding these two streams of experience,
invariant structures are revealed. These invariant structures further provide the
opportunity to refocus on individual participant descriptions, and illuminate the
essential qualities of the phenomena described.
It is argued that by understanding potentially meaningful experiences on a wilderness
river journey, outdoor educators, commercial guides and facilitators will be better
able to make use of surrounding environs to facilitate such experiences. There is a
focus on the unique elements of the wilderness river journey that, in this research,
contributed to the unique experiences which participants valued as meaningful.

▼ This paper presents a web-based multi-modal
journey planner which assists a large proportion of bus users in Edinburgh to find the optimal route based on their specified starting and end location.
Acquired data from the open source database NPTDR contains all of the relevant data for research on Edinburgh bus route. To simplify the network modeling, only bus service of Lothian buscompany was chosen. With a three-tier architecture implementation, DBMS in the designed route planner facilitates the spatial and attributes query during the navigation process. In this project, a relational database was created to store and retrieve all the research data.
Numerous studies identify that the peculiarities of bus network lead to the complexity of bus network modeling, which make the route finding process challenging as well. A schedule-based and transfer-based path finding algorithm for the transit network was integrated into the route finding process. Then a selection of best route criteria was utilization to filter the inferior route from the candidate routes.
When it comes to the user interface, the designed route planner enables people to interact with the itinerary planning by specifying the origin/destination locations and expected departure day and time. Through the processing of the algorithm, the interface could return the user the suggested route, the bus stop location, as well as the departure time and the estimation of
journey times of every trip by retrieving timetable data and calculating based on an average walking speed. In addition to showing more sophisticated real time information, this route planner also displays vivid map images to the users.
However, both strengths and drawbacks were identified in the evaluation. Evaluated by users and by comparison with routing results using some other approaches, this project managed to construct the proposed route planner to implement a whole routing process. Inevitably, routing performance is not so satisfying because of the existence of potential errors. Some further improvements should be made for more user interactions or the availability of multiple criteria routing scenarios in the near future.

▼ This thesis consists of the novel Brolga and an exegesis examining in what ways the ideas of katabasis and deterritorialisation inform an understanding of descent narratives in contemporary Australian outback fiction. When writing the creative piece, it was observed that Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey was an imprecise model for my manuscript and indeed for many of the contemporary novels I had read written in similar outback settings. On analysis a better fit lies in the idea of a heroic journey from which there is no clear return from the underworld. This narrative form is defined in this thesis as a katabatic narrative. To unpack this narrative trope, the inverse of territoriality, deterritorialisation, is used as a lens to examine the complex thematic and symbolic resonances of the outback in both Brolga and analogous works of contemporary outback fiction.

▼ The Medical Psychology and Social Work department of the Wilhelmina Children´s Hospital (WKZ) helps children between 0 and 17 years old and their parents to cope with psychosocial problems caused by medical events and/or (chronic) illness. In therapeutic sessions psychologists help children to overcome their fears and develop effective coping strategies. In addition, the department monitors the development of children that have an increased risk of obstruction in their cognitive development with psychological tests. Treatment and evaluation sessions are performed in a so called 'playroom'. The current playroom does not support the psychologists in the wide range of activities they perform. The department addressed this demand in the form of this graduation project. Research in the context provided insight into the usage of the playroom, its users and their experiences. The main problem identified for the current environment is that it does not support the psychologists in the different sessions they perform. A flexible environment is wished which can easily be changed from an atmosphere where the child is able to concentrate (stimulant free) to an atmosphere that invites the child to play (stimulant). In addition, the importance of the child feeling at ease at the start of a session became apparent. It was discovered that the
journey that the child makes before he/she enters the playroom is of significant influence on this. Children that visit the department for the first time are nervous and do not feel at ease when entering the playroom for the first time. Two design directions were identified. One focusing on improving the therapeutic environment and the other on improving the
journey towards this environment. This resulted into one final design 'Gentle First Contact' which consists of a tactfully designed patient
journey and a master plan for a new therapeutic environment. The master plan for a new therapeutic environment consists of a proposed design for the room and recommendations concerning colour, lightening and sound. A flexible environment is created that can be easily adapted to the different sessions that are performed and the characteristics of the child. By turning and sliding panels in the closet, the psychologist can easily and quickly change the atmosphere in the room. In addition, a patient
journey was designed to make children feel at ease at the start of their first therapy session. Several elements are designed to support the child at different moments in the patient
journey: a flyer with information about the appointment, a new waiting room experience, a playful transition to the playroom and an ice breaking activity as start of the therapy session. The elements are designed in line with the new vision for WKZ in which every department is related to an animal. The animal assigned to the Medical Psychology and Social Work department is the seahorse and therefore this animal is used as connecting theme to create a gradual
journey. The seahorse supports, guides and…

▼ This graduation project is related to macular degeneration. Macular degeneration affects the macula, a central pit on the retina which is responsible for the highest visual acuity due to the densely packed cone photoreceptors. Symptoms of macular degeneration can vary in the early stage from blurred vision to abnormal dark adaptation (Jager et al., 2008) however in late stage macular degeneration symptoms can be much more invasive including partial and complete loss of the central vision. In order to cope with the loss of central vision patients could prescribe to what is called eccentric viewing. Eccentric viewing is a technique where the peripheral vision is used to see. Using eccentric viewing as a method to cope with macular degeneration requires, for optimal results, practice. This can be done through training. This project was originally aimed at designing a training method for eccentric viewing with the use of motivating game elements. By speaking to experts from Visio and Bartimeus as well as patients throughout the research phase it became apparent that eccentric viewing was not deemed necessary. Instead other problems were addressed which had a higher priority in solving. These problems include the lack of provided information after the official diagnosis, the attitude of the ophthalmologist during the diagnosis and the perceived gap between the diagnosis and the Low-Vision clinics. By creating a patient
journey and examining the different problems that occur during that
journey a choice was made to focus on a combination of the lack of information after the diagnosis and the gap between the diagnosis and the Low-Vision clinics. Six different topics of information were defined which play part in the lack of information. These six topics are: information about the condition, information about aids, make it easier, information about peer support, training / revalidation support and information about involved instances. Together these six topics cover most of the aspects surrounding macular degeneration. To convey this information to the target group a web-based medium is used. Due to the special target group guidelines have been defined which help in designing a website for visually impaired people. This has resulted in a framework where the necessary information can be placed in. Because of time restrictions one of the six topics which was defined was further developed. That topic is ‘Make it easier’. It resulted in a collection of tips from “experienced” macular degeneration patients on making Activities of Daily Living (ADL) easier to perform. In total 20 different tips were gathered through a brainstorm session, an online survey and telephone contact with Bartimeus. These tips were spread over three different themes: cooking, grocery shopping and public transport. Each tip was accompanied by an image, a descriptive text and a spoken quote. Finally an evaluation test has been conducted with two participants to verify whether the proposed design succeeded. The results from the evaluation show the potential…

After Constantinople’s conquest in 1453, the need to gather updated information on the city under its new rulers became a necessity. Not only the available documentation on the Turks was obsolete, the Ottomans themselves were different from the Seljuk dynasty encountered during the Crusades. Both Asian and European, Muslim and Christian, Turks and Greeks, defining the Ottoman society was a hard task that needed a journey and a shrewd observer. The Ottomans were involved in almost all the European and Mediterranean affairs whether through forming alliances, waging wars, creating puppet states or establishing trade routes. The Holy Roman Empire, France and the Italian city states were among the first to send emissaries to Constantinople. The reports gathered by the travelers offer a variety of first-hand eye witnesses of how the capital of the Ottoman Empire is ruled from daily life activities to the political vision of the sultan. The identity of the traveler plays a great role in determining the content of his report. An ambassador, a spy see things differently from a merchant or a monk. The perception of the Ottoman reality itself evolves…

▼ What is a "place for storytelling"?
Do stories emerge out of built spaces? Or do built spaces emerge out of stories?
I had questions on the relevance of architecture in something as raw and primal as the act of storytelling. But what I did not anticipate was that, of all the many different things that I was exploring, the path that I was to actually take would lie in a children's book that I had never heard about before. It was pure serendipity that I chanced upon it, and later it changed my whole thesis in ways that I could not imagine. I realized that I needed not to find "answers" to questions; but rather enjoy this beautiful
journey that I was on. The magic of storytelling cannot be shut within walls, but needs to grow outwards. Storytelling is as much about excitement as it is about contemplation. It is about remembering the child within us, and about taking a moment to stop and watch sunsets. It is about rituals and thresholds and gazing at stars. It is about shattering the layers and layers of "grown-up" ideas that we tightly wrap ourselves with. It was when I stopped looking for answers, that I could truly understand what is the nature of the built space that I was dreaming of. Rather than being a single elusive construct - it was an eclectic mix of many different experiences tied together into a
journey, guided by a little boy with golden hair.

▼ The ongoing outward expansion of cities and desire to make them pedestrian friendly faces difficulties when confronted by certain landscapes, especially when a car dominant highway infrastructure has a grasp on gully landscapes. Disconnection of pedestrians is frequently observed in highway infrastructure; however, it becomes exaggerated by the large and steep topography of gullies. This displays the lack of walkability that has resulted in the overlap of designed highway infrastructures within urban gully landscapes.
This project researches how the body used as a design tool can attend to the sublime quality present in urban gully landscapes and enhance the transit of walking by means of a
journey to connect the bodily and temporal experiences to the severed landscape. The overall ambition for this research is to empower the pedestrian within infrastructural spaces that currently do not favor them, whilst connecting the walker experience to the gorge landscape.
Taking the Ngauranga Gorge north of Wellington City as a testing ground for this proposition the research spans three scopes:
1. Strategic focus ensured integration of wider infrastructural influences of hydrology and movement corridors;
2. Hydrological focus provided design potential for movement routes and aesthetic qualities of intimate walking experiences to develop whilst advancing stormwater management;
3. Attendance to body relationships and intimacy of walking through a
journey rather than designing to get from point A to B methodologically.
The research is a strongly process driven creating a methodology that aims on improving the walkability of the urban gully landscape. The methodology led to the design of two pathways, from nine proposed paths in the network scheme for the site.

▼ Sampling gesture, form, and monumentality from Classical figure sculpture, art history becomes an avenue for exploring tropes of the parallels between man and animal. Raw construction and shipping materials comprise these figures, interrupting conventions of display, archive, transport, and institution. Species are spliced and integrated into the human figure in each of the compositions. Traditionally, the animal is used as metaphor for different human conditions, emotions, and behaviors; our relationships to animals is one that stands the test of time in art. The animal becomes an extension of the figure's human-ness, while also acting as mere prop for the figure. Nonetheless, the myth and composition is contingent on the relationship between human and creature. Challenging the conventions of display and viewing, my material choice inherently contrasts the traditional materials like marble, bronze, or plaster associated with standards of fine art. Through application of these building materials, the body becomes a layered symbol for systematic construction,
subject to tensions of hierarchies like those of the materials. Their provisionality is tantamount to contrasting the exclusivity present in the art museum and academia in which the forms that inspire my works have traditionally operated. I place emphasis on the supports of these figures to further contextualize them within traditions of art history, trade, archive, and transport. Plastic sheeting separates and conceals views of the figures, suggesting that they reside in a state of restoration or storage. I compare this state of non-viewing to a state of limbo, which I use to describe art viewed in multiple degrees of exhibition and completion. Not every part of the figure is intact; the wood pallets, casters, and ramps that comprise their substantial bases directly reference these behind-the-scene spaces. Furthermore, the physical state of transport becomes a metaphor for personal or spiritual
journey. I compare the underlying building materials to a subconscious function of the body that, when exposed, can metaphorically represent a more realistic self than an externally-constructed identity. Through the lens of fine art consumption, the work frames humanity and mortality in a state of incompletion that signals that to be human is to be a perpetual work-in-progress.

▼ In the history of Catholic initiation, there have been moments of dissonance between what the institution expects to happen in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist, and what actually occurs when they are practiced at the local level. Such dissonance often then leads to an evolution in the understanding and/or practice of these sacraments such as when Augustine‟s theology of imputed sin created an emphasis on infant baptism or when the drunkenness of early Christians at the Eucharist table led to shifting communion from an evening meal to a morning liturgy. In light of this historical pattern, this dissertation looks at a current form of dissonance and evolution in the specific context of the western suburbs of Minneapolis. Here, the dissonance relates to high rates of initiate attrition immediately following the ritual process despite institutional expectations that initiates be incorporated into the community as actively participating members. This dissonance is documented through two years of qualitative, interview-based research in multiple Catholic parishes as well as several Protestant churches on a comparative basis. Based on these reports, the dissonance, seen among Catholics and Protestants alike, seems to arise from the fact many initiates in this part of Minneapolis live as highly-empowered individuals who regularly negotiate a variety of disconnected social and relational networks – each of which vies for their attention. In this competition of social spheres, initiates commonly leave the church to participate in contexts that they perceive to “meet their needs” such as schoolwork, athletics, jobs, and other extra-curricular activities. As a result, the church appears to be in the early stages of an evolution in which initiation sacraments focus less on community incorporation and more on how they meet needs in an individual‟s faith journey.

▼ non-peer-reviewed
The aim of my autoethnographic study is to examine my spiritual journey to find meaningful work and connectedness. A further aim of my study is to examine the implications for guidance counsellor practice by exploring the relational context in career development and provide opportunities for women marginalised by career to work through their disconnection for career renewal.
We are now living in a society that is embedded in a highly technologically driven and volatile global economy where workers’ employability depends on their adaptability (Savickas, 2011). We are also living in an increasingly fragmented world that promotes separateness and diminishes the value of caregiving, thus prioritising economic development over enhancing the human condition (Blustein, 2006; Gilligan, 1982; Hansen, 2001).
To examine these broad issues in the context of my own career journey, a social constructivist autoethnographic study has been employed using arts-based narrative inquiry techniques to collect data and analyse data on my career narrative. A thematic analysis was then conducted to report the significant socio-cultural themes and patterns in my primary findings for wider theoretical applicability (Braun & Clarke, 2006).
The research findings arising from this study show that relatedness is central to women’s psychological development, career identity, progress and performance. Furthermore, our postmodern relational context has created a dilemma for contemporary working mothers by expecting women to balance the competing demands of individualistic career success with parenting children.
This perspective challenges guidance policymakers, academics and guidance counsellors to balance the individualistic needs of the economy with the relational needs of women’s psychological well-being (Hansen, 2001; Schultheiss, 2009; Watts, 2005).
Finally, a series of recommendations arising from the study are put forward to inform future policy, research and practice.

▼ In today’s society, more of the population is finding itself with multiple points of reference to what they consider as home. Anyone who finds they have more than one place that they feel tied to for one reason or another, considers the impact of these places on their identity. The scale of experience with the places where we live, visit and grow up influences the scale of impact upon our identity. Even a vacation or a visit to a certain place influences us, and thus also changes the place because we interact with it. I am showing, through sculptural and creative media, the layering effect of locational identity and the journeys we make to physically and conceptually link those identities.

▼ The Call is a seventeen-and-a-half minute, programmatic work for large orchestra. The program illustrates the first three stages of Joseph Campbell's outline for the Hero's
Journey described in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces. Influenced by other compositions with a heroic theme, the piece pays a special homage to Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 and the Tone Poems of Richard Strauss. Set as a single movement work and divided into five sections, the program follows an unnamed hero as he progresses through the stages "The Call to Adventure," "The Refusal of the Call," and "Supernatural Aid." The analysis of The Call details how the themes associated with each stage are used to underscore the story of a hero's
journey and metaphorically illustrate the hero's plight of being chosen to perform the tasks ahead. Formally designed in arch form, the main themes function as leitmotifs to symbolically represent the role of the main character within the stages of the Hero's
Journey.

▼ Architecture is about designing buildings. But studying architecture, sometimes we want to know the things behind the appearance of the building. What happens "inside". Designing a building needs to deal with space. What is inside the space? By going straight in and out of the solidness, we enter the next dimension, the 4th dimension. This is inside and outside the appearance of the building we see every day.
Also trying to figure out the meaning of it, the thesis generalizes a way of perceiving the fourth dimension in three-dimensional building, which has two aspects of space and time. First, expanding the 3D space allows us to perceive each 3D slice of a 4D space. Those slices should be "seen" at the same time if we have four-dimensional senses. This brings up the second aspect, folding time. We travel from one slice to another, spending time that would be no time if we truly experience four dimensionally.
In the story of our helper J, we found a way, both a solution and a circulation, to visit this "building". Our sequence represents one of the appearances of what the building would be. In our world, visiting this building one enters by arriving at its end (top in this case), going back down and exit. It is the same in the narrative of J's
journey in this building's world. So, reality and imagination merge. Let's find out what it feels like.

▼ As the B2B environment of the Software as a Service (SaaS) industry is changing more rapidly than ever, Exact needs to constantly adapt to these changes and accommodate to the increasingly complex needs and wishes of their customers. Designing a good customer experience is vital in ensuring a sustainable competitive advantage for Exact. In order for Exact to try to adapt to this change in environment, a shift towards customer centric initiatives showed over the past years within its organisation. Among these initiatives is the creation of a Customer
Journey Management (CJM) team, about half a year ago, within the Customer Success department of Exact. Their aim is to improve customer satisfaction and reduce churn, by optimising the customer experience of Exact solutions. This project was initiated by the CJM team which asked: “How can Exact bring Customer
Journey Management to the next level of maturity?” As CJM is slowly getting up and running, many quick wins can still be achieved in the Post-Sales process they are currently responsible for. It is debatable, however, whether this is the right approach for the long term, whether they have the right influence to make the desired impact and whether the metrics they are being held accountable for are fitting for its ultimate goal: the optimisation of Exacts end-to-end customer
journey. In order to reach this goal, close collaboration between different departments is necessary, by empowering them to positively contribute to their part of the customer
journey in an integrated way. This can only be achieved through a shared deep understanding of the customer and their
journey and if the value of customer
journey management is proven for all stakeholders involved. Ultimately, electing a board member responsible for Exacts customer experience in the form of a Chief Customer Officer (CCO) would be advised. The challenges that the CJM team face, identified in analysis, all seem to point towards the conclusion that user-centered design thinking is not embedded (enough) into the veins of the company. This does not mean that it’s employees do not have the customer at heart though, but it seems that often the customer is not understood well enough and thus mistakes are more easily made. In practise this approach seems harm the customer experience, hurting revenues in the long run. As long as the customer experience is not understood deeply enough by employees, Customer
Journey Management does not have the means to impact the customer
journey end-to-end, as recommended by literature to bring CJM to the next level. Therefore it was chosen to design a system that enables Exact employees to gain a deeper understanding of their customers. The solution was found in the design of a Game Development Guide. It enables the CJM team (and other employees) to simulate the customers experience through playing games. It is a step-by-step guide for its development and provides the process and tools necessary to design, play and evaluate the games based on different customer experiences. Once the…

▼ This thesis represents and examines my metamorphic
journey as it relates to acting. These pages hold my greatest fears, insecurities, perspectives, and mantras toward life and the magical world of theatre. Chapter One, Genesis of Passion, reveals how my childhood helped and hindered my progression as an artist in my adulthood. Chapter Two, Metamorphosis of an Artist, speaks to the mental and physical adjustments required to transition from the teacher back to the student. Chapter Three, Touched by An Angel, includes historical data surrounding Blues For An Alabama Sky as well as specific character research needed to bring my character to life. It discusses my mentality toward this preparation as well as thoughts and insights while rehearsing and performing the role. The final chapter, Revelations of Possibilities, speaks to my desire to leave a blueprint for Master of Fine Arts students in this program who will graduate after me. It encourages and directs them toward a path of finding elements that perfect their artistry, filtering negativity that blocks this growth and forgiving themselves and others when instances and situations do not turn out as they might have wished.

▼ Background: The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a blood-borne infection affecting an estimated 170 million people worldwide including approximately 250,000 Canadians. Untreated HCV can contribute to significant morbidity and mortality. Despite the benefits of HCV care, there continues to be significant gaps in the uptake of services. Purpose: This thesis explored Canadian women’s experiences of the journey with HCV care from the perspective of the women, in order to promote care engagement, improve patient-provider relationships and deliver services that meet women’s needs. Methods: This study, inspired by grounded theory techniques, explored women’s experience of living with HCV and factors influencing their journey with care. Purposive and theoretical sampling across three Canadian provinces generated interviews with 25 women. Results: Three concepts were central to understanding women’s journey with HCV care: 1) The point of diagnosis shaped women’s journey with care through a) their preparedness for a positive diagnosis, and b) the information/health education they received; 2) Women faced complex barriers to care - (a) information provision, b) family and caregiver responsibilities, c) relationship with healthcare provider, d) active substance use and e) stigma and discrimination - but often showed inventiveness and determination to overcome them; 3) Women saw their decision to attend for HCV care as prompted by a) immediate crisis, b) gradual sequence of awareness, or c) medical intervention. Conclusion: The development of effective interventions and integrated models of care requires an understanding of the complex factors that shape women’s journey with HCV care. Improving women’s journey with HCV care will enhance their access to the new treatment regimes. Recommendations: A National HCV Strategy and comprehensive guidelines for care, treatment and prevention; HCV education throughout the healthcare system; and equitable and accessible healthcare for all women living with HCV.

This research proposes the theoretical approach of silence as a comunicational element, as an element connected to the materiality of language, as a way able to produce narrative rhythm and edify projectual bases destinated to development and the implementation of art direction in a project to creat Journey, an independent eletronic game to the seventh generation videogames. The silence in Journey was observed as a composition element of language, in other words, as something that wasn t purposely said but could have produced some kind of communicational effect on the route of the narrative that was proposed to the plot. So, we discovered places and characters that compose the playful universe of this electronic game by the metaphore of silence, approaching
narrative systems, technics of art direction and projectual relations established by this context. This is the central point of this project, translate the silence and its absences in a communicating element, transformer of players perception and sensibility by the narratives and the art direction of an artistic expression in shape of videogame.
