▼ Women’s leisure has typically been examined in terms of their family roles. An area of women’s leisure that has often been overlooked in the research is the development of community and voice, specifically the opportunities for this within
the blogosphere. The purpose of this study investigates how mommy bloggers build community and explore notions of motherhood through writing and voice. This was a basic qualitative study. Data collection involved examining the blog archives of four top
mom bloggers on the 2010 Babble Top Mom list. Research questions centered on motivation for blogging, how blogging creates or facilitates community for mothers, how blogging provides a conduit for voice, and how blogging reinforces or recreates
traditional notions of motherhood. Motivating factors included having an outlet for expressing parenting experiences, a sense of vindication to those experiences, and appreciation for the community that formed. Women reported that their blogs became a
space where they felt a sense of ownership. Three conclusions emerged from this study. The first conclusion was that the purpose of blogging is fluid and changing as the women grow and develop their voices. The second conclusion was that blogging
provides a space to challenge the notions of motherhood through the embracing of authentic voice. The final conclusion was that community in this context is fostered from personal catharsis, ownership and voice, personal validation that builds
relationships, and motivation that shapes the relationships formed.

▼ This dissertation examines and explores the assumptions and debates associated with qualitative synthesis within the health sciences. My particular area of interest is the complexities arising from various techniques of qualitative synthesis currently emerging in the field of qualitative systematic review. More specifically, in this study I sought to assess the
impact of the choice of theoretical constructs, methodological frameworks or methods on the nature of the findings when undertaking a qualitative synthesis. My intention was to examine
the debates and conjecture surrounding claims made in relation to meta ethnography and meta aggregation as underpinning approaches to the systematic review of qualitative evidence, as
these have attracted interest and polarised the opinions made of their proponents. In order to achieve this a multi phase study was undertaken, where phase one included the identification of a high quality, published meta ethnographic review and the conduct of a comparator meta aggregative review. Phase two consisted of a comparison between the two reviews, with each phase necessarily consisting of sections that worked to clarify the steps and stages taken in the conduct and reporting of the research that formed the basis of this thesis. The primary results of interest from this process were not the findings of the meta ethnographic review compared with the meta aggregative review, but the subsequent analysis of where and how differences originated.
Interpretivism is the catch phrase of meta ethnography, yet it is by no means clear what is meant either by the originators; or by subsequent reviewers who have used the methodology but not explicated its philosophic foundations.
Interpretivism is not a unified theory, it is instead a broad church; inclusive of many philosophical perspectives, specifically hermeneutics, phenomenology and symbolic interactionism. The particular claims to
interpretivism for ethnographic reviews was examined and found to be a superficial and inadequate representation of the methodology. Specifically, hermeneutic phenomenology has been found to be ontologically and epistemologically congruent with the methodology and methods of meta ethnography. It also became evident that the methods-centric focus of meta aggregation has limited wider understanding of the methodology, leading to an incorrect association with integration. This study maintains that the interpretive foundations of aggregative synthesis are found in Husserlian Transcendental Phenomenology. This study suggests that the approach and purpose are the first two key points of decisionmaking. Therefore, reviewers interested in undertaking qualitative synthesis should first consider what approach is a good fit with their purposes before deciding upon a methodology. Within the ‘interpretive philosophic’ perspective, the two core philosophies [of hermeneutic phenomenology (with fusion of horizons), and transcendental phenomenology] are where we must look to understand both the differences between meta aggregation and…

▼ Evaluation of intervention programmes is essential to adduce evidential information on their implementation, delivery and effectiveness. Evaluation of programmes is conducted for various reasons: to identify provision of programme services and ways to improve the programme, to judge programme merit and to generate knowledge about programme functioning. Process evaluation explains the operation of the programme, service delivery and the utilisation of resources with a view to continuous improvement. However, process evaluation has been neglected despite the significant role it plays in the continuum of evaluation strategies. In South Africa, the poor performance of Grade 12 learners has led to the introduction of the Secondary School Intervention Programme (SSIP) to reduce the number of failures in the matriculation examination and improve the results, particularly in underperforming secondary schools. This study evaluated the delivery of the SSIP in the Tshwane West district through process evaluation using qualitative research methods. As part of the evaluation, relevant records and SSIP documents, which yielded information on the participating schools, learner attendance, the tutors and their qualifications were examined.
During the course of the fieldwork, 10 lesson presentations were observed and 10 tutors were interviewed immediately thereafter. Ten learners, the Programme Coordinator and 3 site managers volunteered for interviews about the programme. Findings indicated the necessity of tutor training in the use of the programme materials and frequent assessment of learners to determine improvements in learner performance. The SSIP should focus not only on improving matriculation results but also on the education and professional development of educators. To enhance effective programme delivery, innovative and modern teaching resources, such as computers to access the internet and other technologies, should be introduced. Based on the findings, it was recommended that SSIP should not be confined to underperforming schools but should be extended to other schools as well. Learner feedback on strengths and weaknesses in the programme and how the latter can be remedied will contribute to programme improvement. Finally, this study reflects the need to adopt process evaluation as a significant component of evaluation and advocates further research conducted on other areas of evaluation.

▼ This study focused on the success stories of students
after academic probation in order to explore, understand and
describe their personal perceptions, perspectives and the meanings
they ascribed to academic probation. I also hoped to gain insight
into the success factors that enabled the students success after
academic probation. Through these insights I hoped to add to our
understanding of supporting students on academic probation.
The
conceptual framework for my study was based on the strength-based
approach and Bean and Eaton’s psychological model of college
student retention. I also explored literature on the experiences of
students who encountered academic failure as part of framing and
understanding of the students’ experiences. For the purposes of the
aforementioned objectives I followed a qualitative research
approach, anchored in an interpretivist paradigm. I collected data
through a focus group interview with three participants. The
participants were purposively selected on the basis that they
themselves were placed on academic probation. With the permission
of the participants the interview was tape-recorded, the recording
was supported by a research field journal.
Three core themes in
the data were identified namely Psychological Processes,
Institutional Support Structures and Personal Support Systems.
These core themes were integrated with literature and further
linked to sub-themes and related themes. The results of my study
found that students were enabled by four psychological processes
namely attitudes and behaviours, coping behaviours, an internal
locus of control and high self-efficacy beliefs to succeed.
Institutional structures, including the policy on academic
probation, played a crucial role in supporting the students to
succeed, and it was because of personal support structures such as
family and friends that students had the courage to return to their
studies and make a good effort at succeeding. As a conclusion, this
study suggested that it is possible for students to rise above
academic probation and persist towards academic achievement and to
have positive experiences which enable them to complete their
studies.

▼ This thesis explores green consumption practices among young environmentalists in an Australian city. It argues that subjective experiences and socially constructed symbolic meanings of green consumption practices explain how and why young environmentalists engage in green consumption practices in connection with the emerging green consumer movement. This thesis aims to extend theoretical underpinnings of green consumption by postulating a theoretical framework of symbolic meanings of green consumption practices. This framework is built on an investigation of what consumers do when they engage in green consumption as opposed to antecedents of intentional green consumption.
The main research problem was articulated as: In relation to the emerging green consumer movement, what symbolic meanings of green consumption practices are shared among young environmentalists in Australia? Symbolic meanings of green consumption were investigated by adopting an interpretive approach and using photo-elicited in-depth interviews with young environmentalists. A skeletal theoretical framework guided the investigation, which was built on several sensitising concepts including meanings of green consumption, ways of engaging in green consumption practices, consumer identity expressions, and social connections and differentiations through engaging in green consumption practices.
The postulated theoretical framework of the thesis is built on several thematic categories: 1) green consumption seen as keeping an eye on producers and sellers, 2) “naturally greened” personal habits, 3) emotional affiliations with green procurements, 4) green prosumers to replace commodities, 5) empowered and shared consumption: signs of the connection with the emerging green consumer movement, challenging the dominant social paradigm, 6) redefined environmental paradigm, 7) unperceived local risk of climate change, and 8) I, we, and others in the emerging green consumer movement.
This thesis concludes that the meanings of green consumption practices among young environmentalists are built on having needed to disassociate from the dominant market systems and mainstream consumer practices of presumably green-ignorant mainstream consumers. The young environmentalists seek alternative and enjoyable means of consumption while taking part in the emerging green consumer movement. Positive connotations seem to be more prominent among the environmentalists’ green consumption practices than negative connotations such as limiting, restricting or controlling consumption or imminent, local danger of climate change. This leads to the formation and expression of green consumer identities through social connections and differentiations. This thesis has potential implications for developing theoretical underpinnings and methodological approaches of green consumption, designing promotional campaigns of green consumption practices among young…

▼ Global interdependence has stimulated the necessity of establishing the conversation between the Western traditions and non-Western traditions. Political concepts developed in one society, for example in the West, may have different implications in another society, such as in non-Western contexts. The meaning of political theory is constantly transformed and show different interpretations from the trajectory that we used to know. One example will be the use of deliberative democracy which is a concept developed from the West.
On the one hand, the development of deliberative democracy in China is deeply connected with the contexts of its culture, institution, socio-political traditions, and its local experiment. On the other hand, the adoption of deliberative democracy in China shows signs and conditions of democratization brought by incremental changes due to the cultivation of the deliberative capacity.
The duality between the local contexts and the universal trend of democratization constitutes the basic theme of deliberative democracy in China. With the inspiration from Edward Said’s Traveling Theory and Giorgio Agamben’s concepts of exception and example, this dissertation will discuss why and how the development of deliberative democracy in China is heading toward cultural exceptionalism rather than embracing the universalism prescribed in the normative goal of deliberative democracy.

▼ ABSTRACT
Providing equitable learning opportunities for all students has been a persistent issue for some time. This is evident by the science achievement gap that still exists between male and female students as well as between White and many non-White student populations (NCES, 2007, 2009, 2009b) and an underrepresentation of female, African-American, Hispanic, and Native Americans in many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related careers (NCES, 2009b). In addition to gender and ethnicity, socioeconomic status and linguistic differences are also factors that can marginalize students in the science classroom. One factor attributed to the achievement gap and low participation in STEM career is equitable access to resources including textbooks, laboratory equipment, qualified science teachers, and type of instruction. Extensive literature supports authentic science as one way of improving science learning. However, the majority of students do not have access to this type of resource. Additionally, extensive literature posits that culturally relevant pedagogy is one way of improving education. This study examines students' participation in an authentic science experience and argues that this is one way of providing culturally relevant pedagogy in science classrooms.
The purpose of this study was to better understand how marginalized students were affected by their participation in an authentic science experience, within the context of an algae biofuel project. Accordingly, an interpretivist approach was taken. Data were collected from pre/post surveys and tests, semi-structured interviews, student journals, and classroom observations. Data analysis used a mixed methods approach. The data from this study were analyzed to better understand whether students perceived the experience to be one of authentic science, as well as how students science identities, perceptions about who can do science, attitudes toward science, and learning of science practices were affected by participation in an authentic science experience. Findings indicated that participation in an authentic science experience has a positive effect on science identities, scientist perceptions, science attitudes, and learning of science and is one approach to mitigating the effects of marginalization in the science classroom. Additional findings indicated that a relationship between the authenticity of the experience and the outcomes (science identity, perceptions about who can do science, science attitudes, and learning of science). This study provides empirical evidence to support authentic science learning as a means of improving students' learning, attitudes, and identities with respect to science. This study endorses authentic science experiences for all students, marginalized included. This has implications for how we prepare future and support current science teachers. In addition, this study shows how this model can be used to effectively implement science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

▼ This thesis offers a Derridean perspective to the notion of international interventions and missions by focusing on the case of Kosovo. It argues on a reconceptualization of ethics as foreign policy, interrogating questions of how to rethink ethics as justice and how to rethink the notion of (non)intervention. The structure is built around four primary questions that are dealt with in four consecutive articles utilizing four of Derrida’s concept: deconstruction, hospitality, autoimmunity and home respectively. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to the introduction of the thesis, a theoretical and methodological discussion, data generation and interpretation and an overview of thesis’ structure. The second part is reserved for the four articles, each employing a particular concept of Derrida, to shed light on the dynamics of Western/EU missions in Kosovo. Part three provides a summary of main issues covered in the thesis, concluding remarks and a debate for further research. In its final part, the thesis calls for de-missionizing of the spread of democracy, be that as an aim to civilize, modernize or, Europeanize, others. De-missionizing is essentially related to de-pathologizing the other as something intrinsically corrupt and de-objectifying the other as a structure in need for intervention. This would in turn lead to a more democratic way to construct relations with others.

Goodwillned-skrivningar skapar problem med just jämförbarheten.
Background: The aim of accounting is to provide a historical view of an organization – a company or concern. The difference between the view that is based on accounting principles (and rules) and a view, any view, is comparability. Goodwill impairment causes a problem with precisely this comparability. The reasons given are based on rules stipulated in IFRS. The reasons that a concerns use are, in turn, motivated more or less well on the basis of IFRS but these rules contain a considerable spaciousness thus the use is arbitrary. This thesis examines the spaciousness in terms of regulation and the reasons for impairment as no study so far has studied this.
Aim: This study aims to clarify the structures in the reasons for goodwill impairment as an example of the structures of explicit reasons and rules and implicit applications of standards
Method: The method used was specialized text analysis. Concerns in the study are selected based on specific criteria. These concerns are…

▼ The primary aim of this study was to explore the
manner in which contextual factors influence the implementation of
HIV&AIDS programmes in schools, by investigating the
lived-experiences of teachers who were responsible for the
implementation of such programmes. The findings of this study
mainly add to the vast body of knowledge on the implementation of
the school’s curriculum. In addition to this, the study highlights
the manner in which educational policy can become a workable
instrument by setting parameters for the development of an
HIV&AIDS school policy, and for effective implementation of an
HIV&AIDS programmes in schools. Furthermore, this study will
contribute to addressing the barriers that negatively influence
HIV&AIDS programme delivery in schools. Another outcome of this
study could be the possible improvement of the training of teachers
and curriculum developers. The conceptual framework of the study
dealt with the following: a description of the HIV&AIDS
pandemic (as a background), the impact of the pandemic in the South
African context, expectations and responsibilities of schools and
teachers with regard to the implementation of HIV&AIDS
programmes, and theories that underpin behaviour change, and form
the basis of HIV&AIDS prevention programmes. The important role
of the school as a societal agent, and its important role in the
prevention of HIV&AIDS infection, emerged clearly in this
study. The study was conducted according to a qualitative research
approach, guided by the interpretivist and constructivist
epistemologies. An instrumental case study design was utilised,
during which semi-structured interviews, as the main data
collection strategy, were conducted with purposively selected
participants from three schools (cases). The individual
semi-structured interviews were supplemented with observations, a
reflective journal and visual data collection and documentation
strategies. Four prominent themes emerged subsequent to an
inductive data analysis that was done, namely: teachers’
perceptions and experiences of the HIV&AIDS programme,
managerial factors in the school, societal and community
influences, and HIV&AIDS as a topic in the school
subject Life
Orientation. These identified and structured themes broadly
categorised the empirical findings that were related to the primary
and secondary questions of this study. Although the implementation
of HIV&AIDS programmes in schools was made compulsory, the
study indicated that schools were not adhering to this requirement,
due to factors such as a lack of sound management practices in
schools, insufficient training of teachers and school managers,
uninvolved stakeholders, and the lived-experiences of teachers with
regard to the HIV&AIDS programme. Based on the findings of this
study, recommendations were made with regard to the role that the
Department of Education, school management, teachers and the
community can fulfil, in order to improve the implementation of
HIV&AIDS programmes in schools. This study also provides a

▼ This study investigates how youth in Uganda
experience televised HIV and AIDS educational programmes.
Television is the medium that can be used to address the resurgence
of HIV and AIDS in Uganda. The factors responsible for the
resurgence include prevention fatigue and the saturation of HIV and
AIDS messages in the media. The audio-visual component of
television makes it possible to convey HIV and AIDS messages
innovatively through education-entertainment. Despite its
potential, television has not played a leading role in conveying
HIV-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes to urban youths. The
study required looking at the televised HIV and AIDS educational
programmes from the perspective of young people. In line with the
interpretivist and social constructivist framework, the primary
source of information about the programmes is the experiences of
young people who are the target audience. A qualitative research
approach was used in the study and an instrumental case design in
particular was employed in data collection. Data were collected
through focus group discussions, personal interviews, document
analyses and participant observations. Findings have revealed that
young people can learn about HIV and AIDS from both educational
programmes and television soaps. While they undergo sexual
socialisation through television soaps, they have the capacity to
distinguish between fiction, fantasy and reality. However, they
dislike the didactic and authoritarian approaches that are used in
the educational programmes. An important finding is that
communication gaps characterise televised HIV and AIDS educational
programmes. Some of the prevention messages and the values
propagated by television HIV and AIDS education are detached from
the experiences and world views of the youths. This could be
attributed to insufficient knowledge on the part of HIV and AIDS
educators regarding the way in which youth experience televised HIV
and AIDS programmes.

▼ From the Treaty on European Union (1992) to the Treaty of Lisbon (2007), democracy became a central element in the constitutionalization of the European Union. Over these twenty-five years, democracy was embedded in the institutions and practices of the European Union in two primary respects. First, following the controversial the ratification of the TEU, a series of treaty reforms were introduced to address the EU’s “democratic deficit.” These reforms culminated in the Lisbon Treaty. Second, in response to the political revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe the European Union made the transfer of democratic forms of rule to non-member states a key component of its membership policy. It is now the case that only democratic countries can be members in the democratic Union. This dissertation investigates the origins of some of the key ideas that led to these transformations.

▼ Balancing the work and family domains is an ongoing concern for men and women in dual-earner relationships. However, most of the research studies that have explored work-family balance, have been conducted within the North American context using highly educated middle-class couples. Furthermore, no known South African studies have explored work-family balance experiences and strategies based on the couple as a unit. The aim of this study is therefore to understand how middle-class South African dual-earner couples experience and pursue work-family balance. A sample comprising ten multi-racial, middle-class, heterosexual dual-earner couples with children, who work in different employment sectors, and reside in Cape Town, South Africa, were selected purposefully through the use of convenience and snow-ball sampling techniques. The interpretive approach located within the qualitative paradigm was employed to understand the subjective experiences of couples through the method of semi-structured conjoint interviews. All conjoint interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed for later analysis. Patterns and themes within the data were identified using thematic analysis and later organised through the use of thematic networks. Two organising themes were uncovered for the global theme "subjective experiences of work-family balance amongst dual-earner couples", namely that work-family balance is a unique experience, and that work-family balance is a dynamic process. Furthermore, the data analysis revealed ten organising themes for the global theme "strategies dual-earner couples use to pursue a work-family balance", namely that striving towards an egalitarian marital relationship helps to promote couples' experience of work-family balance; proactively structuring opportunities for time with family contributes to a balanced work and family life; accessing familial and paid support promotes feelings of being successful in balancing work and family roles; shared planning and organisation facilitates a better balance of work and family roles; living within means relieves couples of unnecessary financial stress; creating opportunities for "alone time" supports couples' work-family balance; work validation and satisfaction encourages greater experiences ofwork-family balance; having the ability to control one's schedule ensures greater freedom to transition between work and family domains; setting boundaries around work and family domains helps couples maintain their balance; and relying on faith to cope with work and family stressors leads to a more balanced life. Each organising theme contained several basic themes which were discussed in relation to previous literature and/or research studies.

▼ This research focused on the role of leadership in improving secondary schools’ performance in the Bulawayo province of Zimbabwe. The research was qualitative and a case study was carried out in six secondary schools in Bulawayo. Participants were school heads of the six selected schools, four teachers and two students from each school. Purposive sampling was used in selecting participants. Data was collected using interviews and focus groups.
Definitions of leadership given by participants, were summarised as follows: leadership is a process where the leader convinces and motivates followers to follow specified directions in order to achieve desired goals willingly. The study established that most schools used the democratic, situational and the transformational leadership styles but to enhance effectiveness, characteristics of other leadership styles were integrated depending on the context. The study also established that most challenges encountered by schools were generic, and the most common ones were negative attitudes, lack of motivation, lack of financial support, inadequate encouragement of students and lack of supervision. School heads had to adopt appropriate leadership styles in order to effectively attend to challenges faced in their respective schools and thereby improve school performance.
The study recommended that a combination of leadership styles, flexible and adapted to each school’s unique situation would be the best model for improving secondary schools’ performance in the Bulawayo province of Zimbabwe.

▼ This study is grounded in a desire to describe and understand the positioning of eHealth within the health policy process. Policies and politics are intertwined (Corbitt, 1995). The current literature on health policy analysis suggested the problem of how to conceptualize power and relate power to notions like discourse and how to integrate these ideas of power into a conceptual framework for policy analysis. The current literature on power and politics in Information Systems (IS) deployments have drawn on limited conceptual resources to understand IS as artifacts, and power as a definable (and often manageable) entity, in ascribing IS a political role. This thesis questions the power relations that constitute the health policy process and those that are constituted by the health policy process. The research interprets health policy initiatives within the broader political and ideological context in which it is occurring. This study focuses on the discursive nature of health policy, and how various practices and techniques are implicated in governing the interpretation of policy intentions and behaviors to act in relation to policy. Of particular interest in this study are the discursive spaces for action within which acts of power and resistance can unfold. This study aims to illustrate that the critical interpretive perspective (Doolin and McLeod 2005) applied to an understanding of health policy as a process constituent of power relations, a process involved in governance and advocacy tied to polity, knowledge and intervention can contribute to an understanding of the mobilization of authority and the impact this has on interpretation of policy intentions. This thesis argues that policy contexts create new discursive spaces for action, spaces which provide opportunities to maneuver allowing for framing of issues or resisting practice change. It suggests that the political landscape of action is made apparent within these spaces, and further that information systems become the medium through which the legitimacy of professional and corporate control mechanisms are contested. This thesis argues that renegotiated health information systems illuminate the reform ideas which have diffused into practice and those that have been delayed at a point in time.

▼ The purpose of this study was to explore and
describe grade 6 learners’ experiences of experiential learning in
the context of the TekkiKids Programme. The TekkiKids Programme
followed a constructivist approach to learning and emphasis was
placed on a learnercentred approach. Documents that were written by
a consultant, who was involved with the TekkiKids Program, were
selected as data sources. These documents included: A feedback
report to the facilitators regarding the sessions; general field
notes of the consultant pertaining to observations made during
lessons; notes of individual unstructured interviews; a
questionnaire that explored learners’ experiences of TekkiKids; and
notes of a focus group discussion. A qualitative, documentary
research design was implemented, and the documents were analysed
according to guidelines pertaining to a process of inductive
analysis. This study found that learners experienced experiential
learning as a method of instruction to be but only partially
supportive and encouraging. They furthermore experienced a need for
more structure pertaining to problem-solving. Multicultural
differences and group conflict had a negative influence on their
learning experiences. Learners experienced cognitive load
distribution as positive . English as the language of instruction
was experienced as a barrier to learners from other language groups

▼ The purpose of this study was to explore and
describe the potential use of Sandplay psychotherapy with an
adolescent who presented with poor self-esteem. In conducting my
research I assessed one adolescent’s selfesteem by means of
quantitative and qualitative measures and identified potential
aspects that might require intervention, related to self-esteem.
After the initial assessment, Sandplay psychotherapy was
implemented as intervention, after which the participant’s
self-esteem was re-assessed, comparing the results with those
obtained during the initial assessment (baseline data). For the
purpose of my study, I fulfilled the role of researcher, involving
an intern educational psychologist in assessing the participant and
conducting the intervention, thereby fulfilling the role of
therapist. I followed a triangulation mixed methods intervention
research approach, primarily relying on the interpretivist paradigm
yet being informed and elaborated upon by a post-positivist
component. I studied a single clinical case situated within the
context of psychotherapy outcome research. This enabled me to draw
conclusions on how suitable and helpful Sandplay psychotherapy
might be (or not) for an adolescent who presented with poor
self-esteem. In collecting quantitative data, I employed the
Self-Esteem Index (Brown&Alexander, 1991) both prior to and
after the intervention had been completed. In support, a
qualitative post-modern assessment was included in the form of the
Rosebush technique (Oaklander, 1988). Other qualitative data
collection and documentation measures include observations,
semi-structured interviews (with the participant and her parents),
photographs of the sand trays and a semi-structured reflection
journal (of the participant), as well as reflection journals of the
researcher and therapist. Based on the pre- and post-assessments I
was able to compare results of the participant’s self-esteem before
and after the Sandplay psychotherapy intervention had been
completed. Subsequent to thematic qualitative data analysis and my
comparison of the quantitative results I obtained, three main
themes emerged. Firstly, the self-esteem of the participant seemed
to have improved following the intervention, since her limited
self-knowledge, feelings of inferiority and her uncertainty in
unknown situations seemingly changed into age-appropriate
self-knowledge, feelings of self-worth and facing the unknown.
Secondly, she displayed changes in the emotional domain of
development post-intervention. She seemed more content with her
situation, reportedly feeling more safe and secure as opposed to
feeling academically pressured, as was the case at the onset of my
study, and having a positive future perspective. Thirdly, changes
in her social domain of development occurred as she displayed
age-appropriate skills, acted more assertively and felt more
accepted and ready to establish relationships. Based on the
findings of my study, I can conclude that it seems possible to
facilitate the improvement of adolescents’ self-esteem by…

▼ An adolescent’s subjective experiences of
mindfulness were explored in a single case study of a 17-year-old
female. Data were created by means of “mindfulness sessions”,
unstructured interviews, creative expression, journals and field
notes. The data were analysed and interpreted using a combination
of typological and interpretive analysis strategies. Findings are
presented within a conceptual framework of mindfulness derived by
the author from the literature review. The conceptual framework
includes the following five “dimensions” of mindfulness:
‘present-centered attention and awareness’, ‘attitude and heart
qualities’, ‘self-regulation’, ‘universalism of mindfulness’, and
‘mindlessness’. The adolescent’s subjective experiences of each
dimension of mindfulness are presented in terms of the primary and
secondary themes that emerged from the data. Emerging themes
include being task-oriented, experiencing greater external than
internal awareness, and enhanced sensory experiences, in terms of
present-centered attention and awareness in mindfulness. In terms
of the ‘attitude and heart qualities’ dimension of mindfulness, the
participant experienced the themes of perfectionism and “letting
go”, and an increased intention to practice mindfulness. The study
found that the participant experienced self-regulation of attention
in mindfulness as interest-driven, needing silence, requiring
effort, and improved with awareness. The participant experienced a
greater awareness of mindlessness, as well as the themes of
mindfulness being applicable to everyday life, and an initial
conflict as to the place of mindfulness in the contexts of science
and religion. Overall findings suggest firstly that the participant
subjectively experienced mindfulness as being predominantly
task-oriented. Secondly, it appears that the participant
experienced personal growth and development in terms of her
understanding and practice of mindfulness. These findings could
make a potential contribution towards qualitative research on
mindfulness, and research on how mindfulness could possibly apply
to an adolescent. Studies have shown mindfulness to be a
potentially promising intervention and quality to be cultivated in
the development of well-being. This study is thus significant in
the context of positive psychology and a move towards more holistic
health and well-being. Copyright

▼ Many stories of the development of political theory in the Anglo-American world in the 20th C could be told to involve many different actors, events, and ideas. This dissertation tells a story that centers on the development of modern liberalism by locating within it the development of the ideas of Charles Taylor (1931-). Taylor's writings on the study of human behavior, the relationship between selfhood and morality, the contemporary relevance of German Romantic philosophy, and the need for advocating multiculturalism and democracy in politics have captured the major debates internal to these fields and have earned him wide recognition as a leading philosopher of our times. By making clear how his arguments about human agency and knowledge form the basis of how social practices should be understood for the strong values they embody, this project shows how the connections between his philosophy of social sciences and his writings on morality and politics constitute a highly salient defense of interpretivism and humanist liberalism for our times. This dissertation brings to light a range of problems, themes, and arguments that mark an "interpretive turn" in philosophy and across the sciences that helped to shape political theory in the Anglo-American context in the 20th C, and explains the ways in which some of those 20th C concerns continue to be of especial importance for political theorists today. Since the demise of logical positivism and the rise of critical forms of thought that render suspect the means for rational debate over normative claims or for discourse without domination, the central project of political theory in the 20th C has been to grapple with what makes for satisfactory ways of understanding social actions and meanings. The last century saw key shifts in ways of thinking where previous philosophical concerns about the possibility, nature, and foundations of knowledge, and preoccupations with the structure of language and the analysis of meaning gave way to greater interest in and new controversies over questions about interpretation: the role of interpretation in human life, the kinds of knowledge to which interpretation gives rise, what interpretative practices presuppose about the knowing subject and the subject matter, and how to judge between interpretive successes and failures. Such questions not only augured epistemological problems for the human sciences, but doubts about established notions of science, truth, and objectivity also bespoke of impediments to comprehensive reflection across cultural, traditional, or linguistic lines, and to the pursuit of rational debate over values. Perceived failures within philosophy combined with lessons drawn from the hermeneutic tradition as well as developments in the interpretive disciplines of historiography, philosophy of science, jurisprudence, cultural studies, and literary criticism served to challenge all forms of foundationalism - epistemological, moral, and cultural, and have redrawn traditional boundaries of knowledge across…

selected as data sources. These documents included: A feedback
report to the facilitators regarding the sessions; general field
notes of the consultant pertaining to observations made during
lessons; notes of individual unstructured interviews; a
questionnaire that explored learners’ experiences of TekkiKids; and
notes of a focus group discussion. A qualitative, documentary
research design was implemented, and the documents were analysed
according to guidelines pertaining to a process of inductive
analysis. This study found that learners experienced experiential
learning as a method of instruction to be but only partially
supportive and encouraging. They furthermore experienced a need for
more structure pertaining to problem-solving. Multicultural
differences and group conflict had a negative influence on their
learning experiences. Learners experienced cognitive load
distribution as positive . English as the language of instruction
was experienced as a barrier to learners from other language groups

▼ An adolescent’s subjective experiences of mindfulness
were explored in a single case study of a 17-year-old female. Data
were created by means of “mindfulness sessions”, unstructured
interviews, creative expression, journals and field notes. The data
were analysed and interpreted using a combination of typological
and interpretive analysis strategies. Findings are presented within
a conceptual framework of mindfulness derived by the author from
the literature review. The conceptual framework includes the
following five “dimensions” of mindfulness: ‘present-centered
attention and awareness’, ‘attitude and heart qualities’,
‘self-regulation’, ‘universalism of mindfulness’, and
‘mindlessness’. The adolescent’s subjective experiences of each
dimension of mindfulness are presented in terms of the primary and
secondary themes that emerged from the data. Emerging themes
include being task-oriented, experiencing greater external than
internal awareness, and enhanced sensory experiences, in terms of
present-centered attention and awareness in mindfulness. In terms
of the ‘attitude and heart qualities’ dimension of mindfulness, the
participant experienced the themes of perfectionism and “letting
go”, and an increased intention to practice mindfulness. The study
found that the participant experienced self-regulation of attention
in mindfulness as interest-driven, needing silence, requiring
effort, and improved with awareness. The participant experienced a
greater awareness of mindlessness, as well as the themes of
mindfulness being applicable to everyday life, and an initial
conflict as to the place of mindfulness in the contexts of science
and religion. Overall findings suggest firstly that the participant
subjectively experienced mindfulness as being predominantly
task-oriented. Secondly, it appears that the participant
experienced personal growth and development in terms of her
understanding and practice of mindfulness. These findings could
make a potential contribution towards qualitative research on
mindfulness, and research on how mindfulness could possibly apply
to an adolescent. Studies have shown mindfulness to be a
potentially promising intervention and quality to be cultivated in
the development of well-being. This study is thus significant in
the context of positive psychology and a move towards more holistic
health and well-being. Copyright

▼ Previous research indicates that gay men‟s relationships with their mothers are generally more warm, supportive, and emotional than their relationships with their fathers, and that fathers are less likely to be told, less likely to be told first, and more likely to react negatively to disclosure than mothers would. Most of these findings are derived from asking sons to report on their parental relationships. As such, very little is known about the nature of the father-son relationship before, during, and after disclosure, from the father‟s perspective. The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to uncover and explore first-hand accounts of the experiences and taken-for-granted meanings that potentially shape heterosexual fathers‟ relationships with their gay sons. A sample comprising six Afrikaans-speaking, white fathers, between the ages of 53 and 61 years, from a middle to upper-middle income bracket, and residing in Gauteng, South Africa, were selected purposively through the use of opportunistic or convenience sampling. Utilising an interpretivist approach located within the qualitative research paradigm, an individual in-depth interview strategy was adopted as a means of gathering data. A brief questionnaire probing demographic characteristics was also utilised to further contextualise the data obtained in the interviews. All the interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed for later coding and analysis. Through the use of thematic network analysis, eight organising themes were uncovered, including (a) subliminal awareness prior to coming out; (b) epistemic rupture of internal system of beliefs; (c) personal paradigmatic shifts; (d) acceptance as a complex and ongoing dialectical and reconciliatory process; (e) ambiguous loss; (f) persistent history of thought; (f) wrestling with the reason why; and (g) coming out as a dual experience. Each organising theme contained several basic themes. On the whole, the themes support the view that most parents are neither totally rejecting nor fully accepting of their gay sons. The fathers are seen to navigate their way through a plethora of experiences and meanings that are not only likely to inform the development of their multidimensional identities as men and fathers, but also shape their unique relationships with their gay sons. While the fathers may have attained a level of “loving denial” in their relationships with their gay sons, most continue to struggle with the meaning and expression of same-sex sexuality, and appear to wrestle with the challenge of integrating their understanding of same-sex sexuality with their constructions of traditional Afrikaner masculinity, as well as their meanings associated with having a gay son. However, unlike prior reports of a poor father-son dyad, the fathers reported a general improvement in their relationship with their gay son after he came out. This discrepancy may be attributed to the possibility that the particular group of fathers who volunteered to discuss their father-son relationships willingly were further along in the…

▼ Recently Alan Andreasen (2003) argued that social marketing is in the 'growth phase' of development following four decades of research and practice. During this same time period, marketing has also witnessed new theoretical ideas and practices that have evolved from the influence of new interactive technologies such as the internet. Only limited scholarly work however has been undertaken to draw these marketing sub-disciplinary areas together. The research undertaken in this thesis bridges this gap and explores the role of the internet as means to further extend social marketing theory and practice. Three research questions informed the study. The first of these questions focused on how internet users describe their experiences of the internet as an everyday technology. The second question investigated the different profiles of internet users' opinions, attitudes and actions, and the third question examined how social marketing can be more responsive to internet user behaviour.
To address these research questions the research design used both qualitative methods of focus groups and in-depth interviews together with Q methodology to quantitatively represent the structure and form of individual users' subjective disposition towards the internet. Although Q methodology is relatively absent from marketing literature, it was a useful method for identifying types of people with similar experiences and views of the advantages and disadvantages of internet interactions and relationships. The research process in the study was operationalised using a three-study design. The first study drew on sixteen interviews and two focus groups with internet users, the second study involved Q sorting with thirty-two internet users, and the third study engaged interviews with twenty social change agents.
This study of internet users is embedded in a particular theoretical and epistemological position. Three issues are relevant. First, a social constructionist epistemology is engaged. This emphasises that technology is a social process, patterned by the condition of its creation and use, and informed by human choices and actions. Second, the research is situated across disciplinary boundaries. Marketing practitioners initially adopted a commercial, albeit simplistic, lens when considering the value of social aspects, such as virtual communities and the social networks of connection that link internet users into longer term relationships and exchanges of knowledge, emotion and shared confidences online. However, the intangible non-material resources shared between customers, organisations and other users online are of import to understanding the value of the internet for social marketing strategy. This required looking beyond the social marketing theory and research, to the literature on the sociology of technology. The third way in which this research is different epistemologically and theoretically is in its interpretive focus. Accordingly, the thesis contributes to the shift in academic focus towards critical marketing, which…

science (international relations)

▼ At the beginning of the Continuation War in 1941, Finnish and German troops commenced a gradual escalation which resulted in swift successive victories against the Soviets. Yet, Finland´s Field Marshal Mannerheim unexpectedly turned his back on military rationality at Leningrad and Murmansk despite his knowledge of how vitally strategic the locations were to the Soviet war effort. Leningrad was encircled by German and Finnish forces and a successful siege was achievable, yet Mannerheim abruptly discontinued the offensive and chose to assume a stale war lasting until 1944. Likewise, Mannerheim withheld his troops from cutting off Murmansk Railway. These events beckon important inquiries regarding Mannerheim´s decision to de-escalate during successful offensives in a total war and presents a conundrum that few have to date examined holistically. As such, this thesis offers an alternative perspective to the current rational explanations of Finnish warfare in the Continuation War. This thesis discusses specific social processes of Finnish society that rationalist explanations overlook and applies the theory of constructivism to identify that normative factors can complement the prevailing rationalist explanations. This thesis further identifies how the social concepts of identity, shared culture and knowledge, and the norms of the Finnish people, and its leadership, contributed to Mannerheim’s decision to disregard military rationality and de-escalate. Lastly, this thesis determines that norms and ideas matter in war studies and future research should incorporate an interpretivist approach which contemplates social constructions and norms as alternative explanations in complex, multi-casual social phenomena like war.

The dissertation aims to expose the Ronald Dworkins thesis that has come to be known as interpretivism, according to which the law is an ïnterpretive practice\". The main objective is to understand the methodological contribution that this thesis represents to the theoretical understanding of the law, and the argument it offers against merely descriptive theories of law. To locate the contribution of Dworkin\'s theory, the dissertation presents, first, the methodological innovations that arise in the seminal work of Herbert Hart, The Concept of Law. The key idea that starts being discussed is that of the internal point of view. It is considered an argument that Hart himself would have \"planted the seedsöf Dworkins interpretivism. Dworkin\'s theory is then presented as a theory that is initially
concerned to understand the controversy in the practice of law. For that, it relies on the argument of theoretical…
