▼ This dissertation stemmed from the question about when individuals are satisfied with information. It attempts to answer the question from the perspective of information appetite, i.e. the desire to spend time with information, expressed in the amount of time spent engaging in personal information practices (PIPs: consumption, dissemination, and creation of information for personal reasons). Studied here are the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) dataset collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and a survey dataset collected on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). This dissertation presents analyses and a discussion of findings of the ATUS dataset, a description of the method of collecting the MTurk dataset, and analyses and a discussion of findings of the MTurk dataset. Two propositions about information appetite (IA) were made, and both were supported by the datasets. The first proposition was that individuals have varying degrees of IA, as measured by the amount of time spent engaging in PIPs, which was supported by the ATUS and the MTurk data. The second proposition was that an individual has different IAs for different topical areas, which was supported by the MTurk data. The study identified a small group of people who spent much time for PIPs, namely a high IA group. In addition to PIPs, the high IA group spent more time with their interested topics than the regular group did. As for what affects spending time for PIPs, having free time (e.g. not working/not having a job, or evenings and weekends) was found to be an important factor. The dissertation ends with a discussion of implications, limitations and suggestions for future studies.

▼ Smart devices have become more complex and powerful, increasing in both computational power, storage capacities, and battery longevity. Currently available online facial recognition databases do not offer training datasets with enough contextually descriptive metadata for novel scenarios such as using machine vision to detect if people in a video like each other based on their facial expressions. The aim of this research is to design and implement a software tool to enable researchers to collect videos from a large pool of people through crowdsourcing means for machine vision analysis. We are particularly interested in the tagging of the videos with the demographic data of study participants as well as data from custom post hoc survey. This study has demonstrated that smart devices and their embedded technologies can be utilized to collect videos as well as self-evaluated metadata through crowdsourcing means. The application makes use of sensors embedded within smart devices such as the camera and GPS sensors to collect videos, survey data, and geographical data. User engagement is encouraged using periodic push notifications. The collected videos and metadata using the application will be used in the future for machine vision analysis of various phenomena such as investigating if machine vision could be used to detect people’s fondness for each other based on their facial expressions and self-evaluated post-task survey data.

▼ The time and money spent on video games are rapidly increasing, as the annual U.S game industry consumer spending has reached 23.5 billion dollars. The cost of producing video game content has grown in accordance with the consumer demand. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been suggested as a way to scale production costs with the demand. In addition to lowering content production costs, AI enables the creation of new forms of gameplay that are not possible with the current toolbox of the industry. The utilization of AI in game design is currently difficult, as it requires both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. This thesis improved game designer workflow in PCG-based game design by explicating the necessary theoretical frameworks and practical steps needed to adopt AI-based practices in game design.
Game designer workflow in PCG-based game design was improved by utilizing the design science research method (DSR). The constructed artefact was determined to be a method in accordance with the DSR knowledge contribution framework, and it was evaluated by using the Quick & Simple strategy from the FEDS framework. The risks related to artefact construction were assessed in accordance with the RMF4DSR framework. The metrics used to measure the performance of the artefact were determined by employing the GQM framework. Finally, the proposed method was evaluated by following it in constructing a simple PCG-based game with an accompanying AI system. The evaluation was performed by utilizing the FEDS framework in an artificial setting. After gathering and analysing the data from the artefact construction and evaluation, the method was modified to address its shortcomings.
The produced design method is the main contribution of this thesis. The proposed method lowers the threshold for adopting PCG-based game design practices, and it helps designers, developers, and researchers by creating concrete and actionable steps to follow. The necessary theoretical frameworks and decision points are presented in a single method that demystifies the process of designing PCG-based games. Additional theoretical knowledge has been contributed by studying the topic from a practical perspective and extracting requirements from an actual design process. The method can be used as a practical cookbook for PCG-based projects and as a theoretical base for further studies on PCG-based game design.
Future research tasks include evaluating the proposed method in an organizational context with real users. An organizational context also warrants means to managing risks in PCG-based game design projects. Finally, generator evaluation and explicit guidance on generator control are important future research topics.

▼ DevOps is currently one of the latest software development practices. Lately it has gained the interest of people in academia and practice. DevOps extends Agile practices to software operations and aims to make software development process faster, more reliable and increase collaboration. Currently there are multiple studies which aim to define DevOps but only a few which try to understand and evaluate how DevOps is utilized and understood in practice and at large.
The aim of this study is to investigate DevOps adoption, practices and tool usage by software professionals in Finland. In addition, the study investigates perceived benefits and challenges of DevOps adoption.
A survey with an online questionnaire was selected as the method for gathering data from software practitioners in Finland. Previous literature focusing on DevOps was used to establish an understanding of DevOps and to create meaningful questions for the survey. A link to online survey questionnaire was then distributed using Slack, LinkedIn and mailing lists during Spring 2018 to Finnish practitioners. Multiple channels were selected to collect sufficient responses for analysis. A total of 81 respondents answered to the questionnaire and were from different backgrounds with respect to organization size, role and team size.
Most of the participants had already adopted DevOps and clear understanding of the concept was considered the most important factor in DevOps implementation. Automation was both an important meaning of concept and also most agreed practice. Faster release cycle time and system quality were the most agreed benefits and lack of common understanding for DevOps was considered the most challenging. A multitude of different tools are used in organizations. The most popular in their own categories were Jenkins(CI), Kibana(Monitoring), Amazon AWS(Cloud) and Ansible(Config/Provisioning).
Automation was considered important aspect of the DevOps concept and also in practice. Further research and qualitative data is required to find out the actual reasons behind these results. The questionnaire instrument can be reused on different target groups. Qualitative questions should be asked on organization level to find out the reasons behind different implementations of DevOps.

▼ Design by Contract (DbC), also referred as Programming by Contract is a programming paradigm for software verification proposed by Bertrand Meyer. The idea is to put obligations for code elements such as methods, interfaces and classes to satisfy the specification of the source code. Indeed, DbC enforces a piece of code to satisfy some conditions before execution (Precondition), and to ensure some conditions after execution (Postcondition) with holding some conditions unchanged (Invariant). This settlement is called Contract which must be valid for that piece of code. According to Meyer’s paradigm, a program can work correctly if it fulfills DbC principles for each method. To empower programmers with DbC, various libraries are made to make DbC possible in coding phase each of which is applicable in a specific programming language and has some features and functionalities. However, choosing the most suitable tool for coding upon a particular purpose is considerably important for development teams with software validation deployment. This thesis aimed to experimentally evaluate and compare DbC instrumentors specially for Java and figure out that which tool had better performance. In order to accomplish such a task, a simple model system had to be designed and implemented with regard to using constraining principles of mentioned tools. The scrutiny of the extensions revealed that Open JML as a powerful framework has generated better results rather than other tools. However, the results of this research is viable for small projects deploying constraining tools.

▼ Free-to-play games are a growing trend in the gaming world. Microtransactions are a way for the player to get more content in a free-to-play game. Microtransactions are the main source of revenue from free-to-play games. This research introduces important free-to-play key performance indicators also known as free-to-play metrics. In addition to knowing the basics of free-to-play key performance indicators, a game designer should be aware of user acquisition. User acquisition is closely associated with Big Data and data analytics. Data analytics can and should greatly affect the game designing solutions.
The free-to-play world offers several other challenges for the game developer. The three biggest of these challenges are: to make as many players as possible to download the game, to maximize the number of player returning to the game after a while and then maximize the monthly average gross revenue per paying users.
Two interviews were made in a Finnish gaming company called Rovio Entertainment Corporation specialized in free-to-play games and their monetization. According to the literature review and the interviews made data analytics and user acquisition are an essential part in making a free-to-play game profitable. Planning and optimizing a game economy should be done as early as the prototype phase and should be maintained through the life span of the game.

▼ In the recent years, competitive video gaming, also known as eSports, has become an enormously popular phenomenon, and a part of the gaming culture. The phenomenon of eSports has created large competitive tournaments that have millions of spectators all over the world. The tournaments include huge prize pools, and eSports has lots of similarities to traditional sports. Video game live streaming is closely connected to competitive eSports and casual gaming. Nowadays it is easy for almost everyone to start streaming gameplay from home and reach people from all over the world. The streams can be, for instance, small personal streaming channels or large eSports tournament streams. Video game live streamers entertain millions of spectators and the streams have different kinds of factors that the spectators notice. The present study focused on discovering what motivates Finnish viewers to spectate eSports and other video game live streams.
The study was qualitative research that included semi-structured interviews. There were 8 participants interviewed, and the interview data was analysed by using directed content analysis.
The qualitative research gave in-depth information about the spectators’ motivations to watch eSports and other video game live streams. There were several reasons why the participants spectated eSports streams, such as cheering for the teams and the players, the in-game skills that the players have, desire to learn new information related to the watched game, and gathering new tips concerning the game that the participants also play. Furthermore, individual performance of the players, eSports commentators, and production quality affected the motivation to watch eSports. Moreover, it was discovered that aesthetics did not affect the participants’ eSports or other live gaming streams’ watching decision or spectating experience.
The participants were motivated to watch other live gaming streams because of the streamer’s personality, newly published games, the atmosphere of the stream, the in-game skills, the gain of information and knowledge related to the game, entertainment, social actions, and escapism. Moreover, the present study provided information on why Finnish spectators spectate eSports and other video game live streams. The limitations of the research were considered, and the results could be helpful for different fields. It was discovered that there is more to be researched concerning the topic of the present study.

▼ Tämän tutkimuksen aiheena on mobiililaitteiden käytettävyyden haasteet Web-suunnittelussa. Aihe on tärkeä, koska mobiililaitteiden osuus Internetin käytössä on kasvanut lyhyessä ajassa valtavasti. Tutkimuksen on tarkoitus tutkia, mitkä ovat yleisempiä käytettävyyden haasteita mobiililaitteilla Webissä ja miten ne eroavat perinteisten pöytätietokoneiden haasteista. Tutkimuksessa tutkitaan myös, millä keinoilla käytettävyyttä voitaisiin parantaa Web-sivustoilla.
Tutkimuksessa pyritään aluksi tunnistamaan kirjallisuudesta yleisempiä mobiililaitteiden käytettävyyden haasteista Webissä. Empiirisessä osiossa tehdyn tutkimuksen tulos vastasi kirjallisuudesta löytynyttä tietoa. Tutkimus osoittaa, että mobiililaitteilla on samoja haasteita Webin käytettävyydessä kuin pöytätietokoneillakin. Suurin ero on se, että mobiililaitteiden ja pöytätietokoneiden välillä on paljon eroavaisuuksia esim. Mobiililaitteilla on hitaammat Internet yhteydet sekä pienemmät näytöt. Näiden vuoksi käytettävyyden sääntöjen noudattaminen mobiililaitteilla on entistäkin tärkeämpää.
Tässä tutkimuksessa löydettiin useita keinoja parantaa mobiililaitteiden käytettävyyttä Web-sivustoilla. Empiirisentutkimuksen tuloksena esitellään keinoja ja toimintatapoja, joilla mobiilisivustojen käytettävyyttä voidaan parantaa. Tuloksissa todettiin saavutettavuuden sekä suorituskyvyn parantuneen sivustolla huomattavasti käyttäen tutkimuksessa löydettyjä tekniikoita. Jokainen Web-suunnitteluprojekti on ainutlaatuinen ja niillä on erilainen sisältö, yleisö ja tavoitteet, on vaikea luoda täydellistä ohjeistusta kaikille sivustoille paremman käytettävyyden aikaansaamiseksi. Tässä tutkimuksessa löydetyt tulokset ovat joukko parhaita käytäntöjä ja suosituksia verkkosivustojen rakentamiseen mobiililaitteille.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of anonymous geosocial applications among Finnish university students. The objective is to understand why these applications are used and how their typical use can be characterized and what anonymity, i.e. the possibility to post without real identity, provides for the students compared to other social media services. Qualitative research approach has been used following the case study strategy. Students from university of Oulu have been interviewed regarding their opinions and attitudes towards Jodel, an anonymous geosocial application. Results of this work indicate that anonymous geosocial applications are used for various reasons and their use can be characterized in many ways. Anonymity enables a more liberal environment for discussion, although it comes with downsides, such as trolling. A key finding regarding this study are the three dimensions of Jodel, which are anonymity, locality and sociality. These dimensions reveal fascinating insights about Jodel, such as a sense of belonging that is generated among users of the application. It was also discovered that these applications fill in a specific need for people to communicate such as to discuss avoidable topics.

▼ With the development of electronic commerce, the number of online consumers increase a lot. Consumers are willing to purchase products online since it has great advantages such as saving time, creating convenience and offering more choices. As the biggest and most innovative retail e-commerce market in the world, China possesses 17% online retailing sales from total retail sales in 2017. As the largest e-commerce site in China, Taobao takes over 80% of the e-commerce market share.
The purpose of this thesis is to do in-depth exploration of the factors that affecting online consumer behavior in China. Taobao is selected as the case of online shopping platform.
A systematic literature review was conducted to investigate the existing articles related to the factors that affecting online consumer behavior when people do shopping on Taobao. Then a qualitative study was designed to examine the factors in depth. An in-depth interview was organized among 10 Taobao users in order to extent the validity of the research. Qualitative content analysis was used as data analysis method and Nvivo was selected as the analyzing tool.
Five categories were classified in both SLR and in-depth interview. The commodity factor was examined as one of the most influential factors. It consists of product quality, price, styles and brands. Factors related sellers including seller’s service quality, seller’s website quality, seller’s commercial credits and online reputation are considered as key factors as well. Social commerce activities such as social media sharing, online reviews, online rating and online forum have significant impacts on online consumer behavior. In addition, web quality and functionality of Taobao and some consumer personal factors including consumer’s mood and perceived risks also play an important role. Consumers’ own requirements, the relationship among Taobao and other software applications and the anti-counterfeiting mechanism of Taobao were three new codes found during the research.
In conclusion, commodity factors, factors related to sellers, social commerce activities, web quality and functionality of Taobao and consumer personal factors were found as five categories of factors that affecting online consumer behavior when do shopping on Taobao. Quality of products was considered as the most important one. Three pieces of new codes were added by this study. The limitation of the study was discussed and the direction of future research was pointed out.

▼ Natural-language processing (NLP) is an interdisciplinary research field that has its core at understanding and analyzing written language. Under this broad umbrella fits several different sub-categories with different goals like sentiment analysis and opinion mining, which are used to discover either underlying emotions from the text or the opinions of the writer. Sentiment analysis has received in recent years a lot of attention in research field due to its applicability to several different domains and topics such as products, companies, movies etc. It can be used to discover whether writers’ attitude towards these topics. Sentiment mining can be broadly categorized in two approaches that are lexicon-based and machine-learning based approaches. Lexicon-based uses a prebuilt dictionary or lexicon to classify texts in unsupervised manner, and it is used more widely as the machine-learning approach needs to have a high-quality corpus for training the classifier.
In this thesis an aspect-based lexicon for software engineering was built. As the object was a creation of an artefact, design science methodology was applied to ensure the research was done rigorously. The requirements for the lexicon were derived from a literature review that yielded both necessary and supplementary requirements. The build process was similarly derived from the literature. This process has several steps starting from the creation of the corpus, continuing with identifying the aspects, creation of the seed set and finally expanding this set into the final lexicon. The result was a lexicon that contained over 10 000 unique software engineering aspects. All of these were scored in terms of valence, arousal and dominance, which together form the VAD-score. Four different methods were used to obtain four different scores for all of them. This guarantees that the most suitable calculation method and even a combination of methods can be used in the future research.
The lexicon was evaluated against an existing generic lexicon, to see how domain-specific lexicon differs from it. The differences relate to how much deviation there are within the VAD-scores and how their correlations interact with each other. The automated parts of aspect annotation and seed expansion were evaluated to see if they can be performed without supervision, as manual annotation and expansion require a lot of resources.
The research showed one possibility for creating an aspect-based lexicon, and steps that can be taken for creating one regardless of the domain. It also showed avenues for future research. The broadest ones are the development of a gold standard dataset for software engineering that uses VAD-scores and defining a systematic and unified process for the creation of a lexicon for natural language processing purposes.

Kun ihmiset kiinnostus tietynlaista teknologiaa kohtaan kasvaa, samaiselta teknologialta odotetaan enemmän, ja palautetta käytettävyydestä alkaa virrata. Liikuntaa harrastaessa ihminen ei kykene pysähtymään niin kuin tavallisessa liikunnassa, joten tällainen mobiili konteksti eroaa tavallisesta ohjelmiston käytöstä. Viime aikoina mobiililaitteiden käytettävyyteen on kiinnitetty paljon huomiota, ja niistä löytyy paljonkin tutkimusta, mutta liikuntaan erikoistuvia tutkimuksia on hyvin vähän. Tässä tutkimuksessa perehdytään salin erityispiirteisiin käytettävyyden näkökulmasta perehtymällä yleistä käytettävyyttä ja mobiilikontekstia koskevaan kirjallisuuteen. Lopputuloksena pyritään luomaan käsitys siitä, miten liikunnan rajoitteet ja siitä saadut edut vaikuttavat käytettävyyteen kuntosalilla.

▼ Laki sosiaali- ja terveydenhuoltopalveluiden palveluseteleistä astui Suomessa voimaan vuonna 2009. Palvelusetelin prosessointi vie kunnassa paljon työvoimaresursseja. Sähköinen palvelusetelijärjestelmä vähentää palvelusetelin prosessointiin menevää työaikaa kunnissa yksinkertaistamalla prosesseja. Palvelusetelin sähköistämishankkeita on meneillään eri puolilla Suomea ja eräs mittava hanke on valtakunnallinen hanke palveluseteleiden sähköistämiseksi. Tässä tutkimuksessa konstruoidaan hajautettu sähköinen palvelusetelijärjestelmä Raahen seudun hyvinvointikuntayhtymän (RAS), palvelusetelilain sekä muiden palvelusetelin sähköistämishankkeiden asettamien toiminnallisten vaatimusten pohjalta. Hajautettua järjestelmää testataan suunnitelmatasolla RAS:in vanhusten kotihoidon palvelusetelikäyttötapaukseen. Tutkimuksen lopputuloksena on hajautetun palvelusetelijärjestelmän suunnitelma sekä järjestelmävaatimuksiin perustuva vertailuanalyysi keskitetyn ja hajautetun järjestelmän soveltuvuudesta sähköiselle palvelusetelijärjestelmälle.

▼ Käytettävyydestä on tullut eräs tärkeimmistä sovellusten kehittämisen osa-alueista. Erityisesti peleissä käytettävyys ja pelattavuus ovat yhtenäinen osa pelikokemusta eli millaisen mielikuvan peli käyttäjälleen antaa. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan tähän asti ilmestyneissä julkaisuissa todettuja pelattavuus-heuristiikkoja ja niiden soveltuvuutta pelisuunnittelussa käyttäen tutkimusmenetelmänäni kvantitatiivista tutkimusta. Tutkimusosion päätavoitteena oli priorisoida aikaisemmassa tutkimuksessa luodun peliheuristiikkalistan heuristiikat yleisesti ja genreittäin.
Pelien kehityksen osa-alueena käytettävyyden tutkimus on suhteellisen tuore käsite. Viime vuosina pelien heuristiikkatutkimuksia on julkaistu suhteellisen kiitettävästi ja niitä julkaistaan jatkuvasti lisää. Tutkimuksissa on todettu peleille suunnatuista heuristiikoista olevan suuri hyöty evaluoinnissa.
Heuristiikkojen avulla saadaan suhteellisen nopeasti aikaiseksi taulukoitavia tuloksia, joista pelin kehittäjät näkevät nopeasti käytettävyyteen liittyviä ongelmakohtia. Kuitenkin, vaikka heuristinen evaluointi lupaa edullista pelattavuuden arviointimenetelmää, on se täynnä subjektiivisesta tulkinnasta johtuvia ongelmia ja yhä useampia kilpailevia ja ristiriitaisia heuristiikkalistoja. Tämän vuoksi nykyisistä tutkimuksista saatujen heuristiikkalistojen tutkiminen ja yksittäisten heuristiikkojen priorisointi on tärkeää pelattavuuden arvioinnin kannalta.
Tutkimuksessa saatiin selville osa-alueittain tärkeimmät ominaisuudet. Game play -kategoriassa on tärkeintä selkeät tavoitteet, sopivasti haastetta, haasteiden on oltava reiluja ja pelin on oltava ennen kaikkea hauska, jonka jälkeen voidaan vasta keskittyä pelimekaniikkaan ja grafiikkaan. Game story -kategoriassa tarina on tärkeässä osassa. Pelin tulokset ovat oikeudenmukaisia, pelaajalla on tunne hahmon hallinnasta ja peli vaikuttaa pelaajan tunteisiin. Game mechanics -kategoriassa painottuu kontrollien tärkeys. Mekaniikka/kontrollit ovat johdonmukaisesti sijoitettu. Mekaniikka on helppo oppia, mutta vaikea hallita.

As different senior citizens with mild dementia had different living habit and kitchen environment, smart kitchen had context aware and learning ability to adapt itself to fit senior citizens with mild dementia’s habit and living condition to assist their cooking activities. This research applied scenario based design method, its result worked with the other research of this smart kitchen project to build smart kitchen prototype, the prototype was created to accomplish the scenario of instructing senior citizens with mild dementia to complete coffee making process by the aid of remote guiding system operated by caretaker. This research developed a way to design steps and collect data elements of coffee making process for the cooking guiding system, so that remote caretaker can instruct senior citizens with mild dementia by taking advantage of it. Multiple cameras based visual surveillance system was designed to facilitate observation of cooking objects and senior citizens with mild dementia’s cooking condition in the kitchen. Audio and graphical assistance were applied to deliver instruction information to senior citizens with mild dementia. This smart kitchen prototype affirmed the feasibility of smart kitchen, and it also revealed the area for further improvement.

▼ Sosiaalisen median kasvu on ollut huimaa viimevuosina. Yksi suosituimmista sosiaalisen median palveluista on mikroblogisivusto Twitter, jolla arvioitiin olevan noin 500 miljoonaa käyttäjää vuoden 2012 alussa. Maaliskuussa 2012 Twitter ilmoitti aktiivisten käyttäjien määräksi 140 miljoonaa. Twitterissä käyttäjät voivat lähettää ja lukea enintään 140 merkkiä sisältäviä viestejä, joita kutsutaan myös twiiteiksi tai twiittauksiksi. Viesteihin voidaan linkittää kuvia ja videoita palveluista kuten Flicker, Instagram ja YouTube. Twitteriä pidetään usein myös uutismediana, vaikka se luotiinkin alunperin sosiaaliseksi palveluksi. Twitter on osoittautunut nopeaksi uutiskanavaksi, esimerkiksi tieto Osama bin Ladenin kuolemasta levisi Twitterissä ennen tiedon virallista julkistusta. Twitterin nopeutta uutiskanavana on myös käytetty hyväksi esimerkiksi tiedottamisessa hätätilanteiden aikana.
Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkittiin suomalaisen uutismedian tapoja käyttää Twitteriä hyödyksi verkkosivuillaan olevissa uutisissa ja kirjoituksissa. Laadullisessa tutkimuksessa kerättiin ja analysoitiin yhteensä 150 uutista kolmelta erilaiselta suomalaiselta uutismedialta. Samalla tutkittiin myös sitä, mitä voitiin päätellä uutismedian ja Twitterin keskinäisestä dynamiikasta. Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan tulkitseva. Kerätystä empiirisestä aineistosta etsittiin yhteneväisyyksiä, jotta voitiin tehdä luokittelu ja yhteenveto.
Aikaisemman tutkimuksen perusteella Twitter on jo jossain määrin yleinen työkalu uutismedioille, sitä käytettiin erityisesti tiedonlähteiden hankkimiseen. Kyselyjen mukaan Twitterissä julkaistuja uutisia ei kuitenkaan pidetty niin uskottavina kuin esimerkiksi perinteisen median verkkosivuilla julkaistuja uutisia. Tämän tutkimuksen perusteella yleisin tapa käyttää Twitteristä peräisin olevaa tietoa uutisissa ja kirjoituksissa oli niiden laajentaminen. Myös pelkästään se, että juuri Twitterissä tapahtui jotain, ylitti usein uutiskynnyksen. Tämä kertoi Twitterin merkittävyydestä. Uutismediat hyödynsivät Twitteriä usein eri tavoin, kun taas Twitter sai ilmaista mainontaa uutismediojen kautta. Viihteellisyyteen keskittyvän iltapäivälehden huomattin käyttävän Twiittauksia suoraan uutislähteenään muita tutkittuja medioita enemmän, mikä tuki aikaisempaa näkemystä julkaisun tyypin vaikutuksesta tapaan hyödyntää Twitteriä.
Tämän tutkimuksen tulokset olivat tärkeitä, koska aihetta oli tutkittu erittäin vähän, erityisesti Suomessa. Saatavilla olevan aineiston määrän ollessa valtava lisätutkimus on tarpeen. Koska Twitterissä julkaistuja uutisia ei aiemmin tehdyissä kyselyissä arvostettu uskottaviksi, jatkotutkimusaiheena esitettiin Twitteriä hyödyntävien uutisten uskottavuuden tutkimista.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to study the process of designing and developing a web-based application for supporting people struggling with overweight to change their behaviour in order to prevent health risks. Obesity and its co-morbidities represent one of the major public health problems globally. To prevent health problems caused by overweight, such as the metabolic syndrome, a sustainable change in an individual’s health behavior is required. Behavior Change Support Systems (BCSSs) have been introduced as objects of study in the field of persuasive technology, defined as information systems designed to form, alter or reinforce attitudes, behaviors or an act of complying without using deception, coercion or inducements. One of the most prominent domain areas for these systems is promoting behavior change for improved health and healthier lifestyles. Despite the importance of the research domain, descriptions from the systems in most cases have been presented in too general level to be benefited from. In the scope of this thesis, we built a full-fledge BCSS within the weight loss and maintenance domain to support users lifestyle change process during a 52-week long intervention. The system design process is studied here to find re-usable conceptual designs such as software architectures and design patterns for future BCSS development and research.

Tutkimus kohdistui tietoturvaan ja sen huomioimiseen Bugzilla- virheidenraportointijärjestelmässä tapahtuvassa, avoimeen ohjelmistoarkkitehtuuriin perustuvan ja salatun tietoliikenteen mahdollistavan OpenSSH-tiedonsiirtoprotokollan muutostiedostojen hyväksymisprosessissa.
Aiheen valintaan vaikutti osaltaan myös aiheen potentiaalisuus avoimen lähdekoodin tietoturvan edistämiseksi ja mahdollinen muutostiedostojen hyväksymisprosessin jatkokehitys. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin Bugzilla-järjestelmässä olleita, viralliseen OpenSSH-ohjelmistoversioon (release) hyväksyttyjä vuoden 2012 muutostiedostoja. Analyysi kohdistui muutostiedostojen hyväksymisprosessiin ja prosessiin liittyneisiin, käyttäjien luomiin tiketteihin ja dialogeihin, joiden sisältämä kommunikaatio käsitteli OpenSSH:n kehitystä ja ylläpitoa. Aineiston analysointi tapahtui sekä hakusanojen että sisällönanalyysin perusteella. Näissä analyyseissä huomioitiin kaikki tietoturvaan liittynyt sisältö.
Avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistojen muutostiedostojen hyväksymisprosessissa on tutkittu aiemmin mutta ei tietoturvanäkökulmasta. OpenSSH-ohjelmistoon kohdistuvana tämä tutkimus eroaa lähestymistavaltaan aiemmasta tutkimuksesta. Tämä tutkimus kohdistui tietoturvallisuusnäkökohtien vaikutukseen muutostiedostojen hyväksymisprosessissa. Tutkimuksessa olennaista oli selvittää, millainen oli tietoturvallisuusnäkökohtien vaikutus muutostiedostojen hyväksymiseen avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistoprojekteissa ja miten tietoturvaan vaikuttaviin mahdollisiin löydöksiin reagoitiin ennen muutostiedoston hyväksymistä ja liittämistä ohjelmiston lopulliseen julkaisuun.
Tämän tutkimuksen kannalta tärkein tulos oli, että vaikka tutkimuksen kohteena olleen ohjelmistotuotteen lopulliseen julkaisuun hyväksytty muutostiedosto liittyi tietoturvaan, ei tietoturvaa huomioitu tai kyseenalaistettu Bugzilla- ympäristössä käydyssä muutostiedostojen kehitysprosessissa tai hyväksymisprosessissa. Bugzillassa tapahtuvan OpenSSH-ohjelmistotuotteen lopullisiin ohjelmistoversioihin liitettyjen muutostiedostojen hyväksymisprosessi ei huomioinut, ottanut kantaa tai kyseenalaistanut muutostiedostojen tietoturvaa.
Koska näiden tikettien mahdollisiin epäkohtiin olisi puututtu usein viimeistään pääkäyttäjän toimesta, todettiin niiden olevan tutkimuksen kannalta analysoitavissa. Ohjelmistokehitystä tapahtuu myös ohjelmiston kehittäjien suljetulla postituslistalla, joka on tarkoitettu ainoastaan OpenSSH-ohjelmiston tietoturvaan liittyvien asioiden kehittämiseen ja toteuttamiseen.

▼ It is crucial for business organizations to constantly find new ways to improve their procedures in order to maintain their position in the industry. One possible way to achieve more cost-effectiveness is to introduce an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. An ERP system is business solution software that can bring a lot of value to a company by integrating different applications.
The main objective of this study was to improve the management of the human and material resources associated with the courses organized by Cimson Koulutuspalvelut Oy (Cimson) by implementing an ERP system that encompassed a resource management module that consisted of calendars collecting and displaying resource usage. The study was motivated by the emerging significance of ERP software among business organizations. Design science research was the utilized research method.
The main observation of this study was that the ERP implementation at Cimson was successful. The main contribution of this study was to give more insight into the mitigation of multi-site issues by implementing a browser-based system, reinforcing the social cohesion of the implementation team, and having a person of top management as a solid part of that implementation team.

▼ A kiosk is a separate electronic computer terminal that allows the users to access information service. Traditional kiosks such as Automated Teller Machines (ATM) use software application with graphical user interfaces similar to normal computer system to allow users to accomplish their transaction tasks. However, this interaction mode has been proven to be difficult to use and not user-friendly for almost half of self-service users. A new type of interactive service kiosk which uses remote Video Mediated Communication (VMC) technology is to provide face-to-face talking with a customer servant to achieve the goal.
Interactive VMC-based service kiosk is a tool that can be utilized in information technology field, bringing its customer convenience and close care to the virtual network. Differ from previous automated kiosk technologies which were concentrated on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), VMC-based kiosk puts emphasis on human-to-human interface technology. It’s not only providing easier user situation for personal services but also bringing benefits for service providers due to the customized service VMC-based service kiosks offered. VMC-based kiosk service utilizes cost-saving goals accomplished meanwhile gives stimulations to achieve a new scale of perspectives and possibilities in the right direction for the company.
The target for the thesis is to exploit remote car rental service using VMC-based kiosk solution and analyze its attributions relate to another three service areas, banking, travelling and reception, in order to find out in what kinds of intended future services VMC technology can be beneficial. For the purpose, this case study uses qualitative approach with scenario-based prototyping and user testing. The test results were gathered in a real use environment where nine people used the prototype and were interviewed in situ. The use situations and interviews were video recorded and transcribed for qualitative content analysis.
Based on testing participants’ experience and feedbacks, the three testing cases indicated that interactive kiosk services using VMC technology in general was considered positive and well accepted. This study also clearly showed that remote VMC-based kiosk service can be successfully transferred to different service areas where similar types of negotiation-based service processes are common. By VMC-based kiosks services, customers can be offered face-to-face talk as a natural communication mode which is an overwhelmed advantage over the traditional kiosk system. Participants in study testing also felt easy and convenient in VMC-based kiosk service use by these features. Meanwhile, more concerns of how to better use of VMC-based kiosk service in other perspectives are still required in the future.

▼ Social media systems like Facebook and Twitter have experienced exponential growth in their user base as they fulfill basic human desires of communication, sharing of opinions, thoughts and intentions. Plus they also act as source of news and a place to network and meet interesting people who would otherwise be unreachable. Social media systems have thus become important tools for dissemination of information and addressing peoples’ information needs and as they are user driven and interactions are mainly over user-generated content, they provide useful features for supporting conversations which are the essence of such systems.
This research is a conceptual analysis of how social media systems have been modeled to influence. The aim is to discern how the design choices made during development have enabled the growth of such systems and their prevalent influence on user interactions. The theoretical basis of the research is a persuasive context which describes how interactive computing systems have an impact on users’ thoughts and consequently lead to a change in their behavior. The study focuses on the architectures of Facebook, Twitter, Yammer and Foursquare to date among the most common social media systems serving different user needs while essentially encouraging conversations in a collaborative environment. The architectures of these systems mainly developed using open source software have undergone numerous changes in order to be able handle enormous amounts of user-generated data in real time and at the same time also be secure and respond to the user’s needs.
Taking these factors into consideration, this research through review of literature, provides further insights into the use of social media systems and how their inherent design choices provide a platform to influence both user actions and interactions by: (i) contrasting between various social media systems, (ii) detailing the features that facilitate influence, (iii) analyzing the architectures of four social media systems, and (iv) analyzing the persuasion context and the resultant effects.
The research is limited by the choice of the four systems for analysis and its conceptual nature which could not provide adequate opportunities for discerning key contextual issues like location, category and knowledge of users and so forth. This could be extended by empirical studies that are longitudinal in nature and use of data mining and/or social network analysis to discern the relationships and discussions with the respective systems.

▼ Purpose of this study was to determine feasibility of an information system that enables remote assistance between caretakers and elderly people suffering from dementia in a smart kitchen environment. Such system could alleviate stress experienced by caretakers by enabling provisioning of care giving between any combination of informal and formal caretakers, and by increasing mobility of caretakers. Second research problem was to evaluate benefits and drawbacks of using workflow technology to model cooking activities as workflow process models in smart kitchen environment. The research was conducted following the design science research framework. Scenario-based method and literature review were used to determine functional and technical requirements for the designed system. Quality function deployment method was used to choose technical solutions to be implemented. The designed system was evaluated by conducting a pilot test that is comparable to alpha test in software industry. Two external test participants evaluated the design following formative usability study guidelines. The pilot test confirmed that designed information system is feasible to be built from technical perspective. The most significant benefit of using workflow technology is ability to model and customize important daily activities such as preparing own meals to match individual needs of users and changing nature dementia. The most significant drawback of using workflow technology is demandingness of creating the models. The results of this study provide technical confirmation on ability to construct a supporting system for remote guidance of cooking activities. Also the study confirms that workflow technology is an viable candidate for powering such system.

Yrityksen ominaisuudet jakautuvat selkeästi sisäisiin ja ulkoisiin ominaisuuksiin, joiden välisestä toiminnasta rakentuu yritys, jolla on mahdollisuudet nousta nopealla aikataululla kansainvälisille markkinoille. Varsinkin sisäisissä ominaisuuksissa korostuvat nopeasti erilaiset henkiset elementit, joiden avulla yrityksen perustamisessa mukana olevat henkilöt lähtevät muodostamaan yrityksen toimintaa.
Nopeasti kansainvälistyvän yrityksen rakentumisesta voidaan tutkimuksen perusteella eristää tiettyjä avainasemaan nousevia ominaisuuksia, joiden avulla hahmotellaan eräänlainen korkean tason konsepti siitä, miten ohjelmistoalalla toimiva yritys kasvaa kansainväliseksi toimijaksi. Vaikka yksityiskohtaista mallia ei alalle tyypillisen monimuotoisuuden takia voida luoda, on luotu malli kuitenkin pohja, jolla voidaan tämäntyyppisten yritysten ajatella rakentuvan.

▼ Tämän tutkimuksen aiheena ovat ohjelmistoteollisuudessa toimivan yrittäjän ominaispiirteet. Tutkimuksen on tarkoitus tutkia, mitkä ovat ohjelmistoteollisuuden alan yrittäjien keskeisimpiä ja tyypillisimpiä ominaispiirteitä.
Tutkimuksessa pyritään aluksi tunnistamaan kirjallisuudesta yrittäjien keskeisimpiä ja tyypillisimpiä ominaispiirteitä. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys rakennetaan kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteella. Yrittäjien ominaispiirteisiin syvennytään tutkimuksen empiirisessä osuudessa haastattelemalla ohjelmistoteollisuudessa toimivia yrittäjiä. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerätään kvalitatiivisten teemahaastattelujen avulla.
Ohjelmistoteollisuudessa toimivista yrittäjistä on selkeästi tunnistettavissa yhteneviä ominaispiirteitä. Ohjelmistoteollisuus poikkeaa perinteisemmistä teollisuuden aloista huomattavasti, ja vaatii tästä syystä myös yrittäjältä tietynlaisia ominaispiirteitä. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen pohjalta luotu teoreettinen viitekehys yrittäjän ominaispiirteistä soveltui myös ohjelmistoteollisuudessa toimiviin yrittäjiin. Toisaalta painottuivat tietyt ominaispiirteet, kuten esimerkiksi riskinsietokyky ja epävarmuuden hallinta vahvasti ohjelmistoteollisuudessa toimivissa yrittäjissä.
Ohjelmistoteollisuudessa toimivista yrittäjistä on tunnistettavissa selkeitä ja yhteneviä ominaispiirteitä. Näiden ominaispiirteiden tutkimus muodostaa tästä syystä perustellun jatkotutkimuskohteen. Jatkotutkimukseen suositellaan havaittujen ominaispiirteiden syvällisempää tutkimusta, esimerkiksi kognitiivisen psykologian näkökulmasta.

▼ The aim of this thesis was to determine the execution times of different cryptographic algorithms in one of the hardware used in Asha families and compare the execution times between HW accelerated, OpenSSL and a company proprietary cryptographic library. Moreover, the motivation was to find out if the HW accelerated cryptographic function should be used when available due to execution time. Furthermore the aim was to find out if the transition to use OpenSSL is to be preferred in terms of the execution times over the company proprietary cryptographic library.
In order to give wider perspective of the cryptography the thesis introduces a brief history of the cryptography. The following cryptographic functions are discussed in the thesis: hash functions, message authentication, symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic algorithms. The cryptographic algorithms are also examined from the embedded systems point of view. In addition of that the security of the embedded systems is discussed briefly in order to introduce the context where cryptographic functions are used.
The other aim and the author’s personal motivation was to learn and deepen the knowledge of cryptographic algorithms, their usage and the issues to take into consideration when working with embedded devices.
The research methods were a literature review and empirical research. The results supports hypothesis that it’s not always beneficial to use HW accelerated algorithms. The results surprised partially because the expectations were that HW accelerated execution would be much faster. Further investigations should be made in order to find the root cause for the results. Most of the algorithms were faster with OpenSSL in comparison to the company proprietary library and some of the HW accelerated algorithms. The performance is better in most of the crypto operations with OpenSSL than with the company proprietary crypto library.
The thesis contributes the fact that no one should assume that it is obvious that the HW accelerated crypto operations are always faster. In many cases it is not significant in terms of performance, but in those cases where the performance is the critical issue the execution times should be measured rather than assumed.

▼ Business process reengineering (BPR) has been discussed over 20 years. Nowadays, social media is widely used by companies in doing business. It plays the role to influence business processes. This thesis aims to answer the question: “How does social media change the major business processes?” The prior research in the disciplines of BPR and social media is reviewed first. Based on the literature, a framework used to illustrate the influence of social media on business processes and degrees is developed. In the framework, four types of communication (firm-to-customer communication, customer-to-firm communication, internal-firm communication, and customer-to-customer communication) are discussed in four main business processes (marketing/sales, services, product, and personnel.) Finnair, because of its activity of using social media, is introduced in detail as an example. The story of Finnair using social media supports the framework. The relationship between BPR and social media is found that is medium.

▼ Software defects are a common problem, despite of decades of research on how to seek and destroy bugs. Software defects are not a mere nuisance, since they come with a very real cost to the industry and the users of software, leading to loss of millions of dollars, countless hours of work and even human lives. Thus there is a very real need to invent new ways to hunt down software defects.
This thesis aims to answer questions concerning integration of modern software development pipeline and fuzzing, an effective fault-based testing technique with strong background in security and robustness testing. More specifically, this thesis seeks to find out how to integrate fuzz testing with continuous integration frameworks to lessen the redundancy in testing: fuzzing usually has its own, separate testing pipeline. Additionally this thesis looks into the possibility of automating generation of fuzzed unit tests using a tool that would use existing unit tests as the raw material for creating the tests to determine, if such approach could be feasible.
This study consists of theoretical and empirical parts. The literature part explores software testing research for results relevant to this thesis, empirical part describes a prototype of unit test fuzzer developed for unit tests written in Python, and observations of relevant issues made during the development process while also describing experiences of how well test cases generated by the tool or manually could be introduced to the existing continuous integration workflow. Research method applied is design science.
The findings show that creating the tool described is not as easy as it would first seem, listing issues large enough to motivate discontinuing the prototyping after first initial version. On the other hand, integrating fuzzing to a continuous integration based workflow seems to be a feasible idea, and automated test case generation is not the only way to create fault-based unit tests.

▼ Introduction: Digital technologies are increasingly being used to assist older people to live more independently and better lives. The rapid increase in ageing population requires and enforces the development of adaptive technological products and services to improve the quality of life for the elderly. ICT has a huge impact on healthcare from both perspectives of delivering and providing accessibility to healthcare for elderly living independently at homes. The usability issues remain major concern for older adults as a challenge in adopting ICT solutions and services. The purpose of this study was to analyse the importance, role and impacts of ICT on elderly health, identify challenges in slow adoption of solutions and to develop a framework for better interfaces that meets the diverse requirements of older adults due to differences in physical and cognitive abilities.
Methodology: This research work presented the results of an interpretative research process that was applied to conduct literature review on relevant literature. The research work analysed the role and importance of using information and communication technology to support integrated healthcare services and independent living for the elderly population in remote, sparsely populated areas. The research work identified the importance of e-health, ambient intelligence, telemedicine, ubiquitous computing and smart homes in today’s digital world. The major constraints and challenges faced by older adults in using ICT effectively in the health sector was studied and a user adaptive interface was proposed as a solution to overcome some challenges faced by developers in developing health applications. To incorporate diverse user requirements, inclusive requirement design (for mobile interface) and universal design were discussed in the research work.
Results: The main conclusions are that ICT offers lots of potentials to support independent and healthy living for older adults. Several applications and tools already exist, however they are not user friendly and convenient for older adults. The technology has changed the paradigm of health care from general health care to self-care and prevention. Mobile, interactive TV, interactive games and Internet are utilized to improve cognitive, functional and social skills of older people. Usability problems seem to be the major issue for older people in adopting the latest technology and successfully interacting with them. The age related cognitive abilities have a huge relevance on system design especially for older people. To incorporate the diverse needs of older adults for the purpose of developing universal design is challenging to developers. User adaptive interface and inclusive requirement design model are suitable to develop more user-friendly applications and technology for older adults. ▼ This study examines the communication and coordination among different parts of game engine. As games contain multiple co-operating processes, each of which handles a small part of whole game experience, game engines must handle the management of co-operation efficiently. The issue is that while the competitive and demanding game industry has hastened the development of game engines, the academic research has been lagging behind.
This study aims to bridge the gap between industrial know-how and academic research by studying how game engines handle managing the processes and data that they require. The study uses coordination paradigm as the research viewpoint and focuses on finding the coordination model used in game engines. The target of the study is to understand how the coordination model is implemented in game engines.
The study was conducted by following design science research, whereby both industrial know-how and academic literature are used in finding the coordination model and implementation method of it. The coordination model was first searched by studying existing models, but as those were proven inefficient in describing the overall theory, a new architectural theory was built. This new theory, called “Communication-oriented game engine architecture”, was then analysed against communication mechanisms used in open source game engines for verification.
The result of the analysis indicates that the theory proposed in this thesis explains the common features among analysed game engines. Since the proposed architecture is based on existing and well-known event-based communication mechanism, the theory behind proposed architecture can be used to understand the design of game engines in respect to the design of other software.

▼ Digital watermarking has generally been used for copy- and copyright protection, authentication and, more recently, value-added services. It has been restricted to digital world but by developing methods which are able to read a watermark from a printed image with a camera phone would enable the watermark extraction to be free of time and place.
The aim of this work was to compare print-cam robust watermarking methods and illustrate the problems that emerge when the watermarking methods are implemented on a camera phone. This was achieved by selecting three print-cam robust watermarking methods and implementing them on a camera phone. The robustness of the methods was tested and the results reported.
The obtained results showed that some changes are required to make the earliest proposed watermarking methods work on a modern camera phone. The robustness of the methods was in line with the intended applications as well as camera phone specifications.
