▼ Location tracking is of paramount importance to many applications such as healthcare, retail and navigation. Outdoor tracking can be easily implemented using the Global Positioning System (GPS). However, indoor tracking has been a difficult problem to tackle because GPS requires the line of sight to the satellites and therefore it does not work well in indoor environments. In this thesis, a high-precision indoor tracking system is proposed to identify, locate and track a person in an indoor room at a low cost. The proposed tracking system consists of three components: StepscanTM tiles, RFID and Kalman-filter based prediction. The StepscanTM tiles can generate precise location information. However, using StepscanTM tiles only in an indoor tracking system is too expensive because the manufacturing cost of each StepscanTM tile is very high. In the proposed system, StepscanTM tiles are deployed to cover a part of the indoor floor while RFID provides a full coverage. The location information from StepscanTM tiles and RFID is then used as inputs for our innovative prediction algorithm based on the Kalman filter, which consequently generates high-precision tracking results. The performance of the proposed system is investigated through extensive simulations. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed system increases the capability to track and locate a person by at least 24% (more than 50% in some cases), with errors ranging from 2.5% to 15%. Furthermore, the proposed system helps to reduce the cost of indoor tracking significantly. In terms of the number of StepscanTM tiles deployed in the system, a reduction of 7 to 25 tiles can be achieved in the scenarios under investigation. In terms of monetary cost, 21,000 to 75,000 can be saved for an indoor tracking system considered in our research. Advisors/Committee Members: n/a (external-examiner), Dirk V. ▼ Bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons are a relatively new technology enabled by both the rise of cheaper sensors for the Internet of Things (IoT), and innovations in the Bluetooth standard to decrease energy cost. As a result, BLE beacons have continued to decline in price and can now last several years on readily available commercial batteries, allowing their use in a variety of applications such as indoor location, occupancy detection, building utilization, and others. Meanwhile, IoT innovations have also enabled an increase in available sensors on commercial smartphones, as well as fueled their incredible popularity, causing not only technology researchers but those from medical, psychology, sociology, economics, and other areas to appreciate the value of smartphones for large-scale, unobtrusive, behavioral research. Of particular interest to many is the study of social behavior, which can consist of communication, co-location, face-to-face conversations, and more. My research lies in the center of these three movements, characterizing and using BLE beacons, in conjunction with the smartphones that detect them, for the large-scale study of social behavior. In this work, I evaluate the use of BLE beacons for sensing social behavior in three ways. First, I will show that direct distance estimation from the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of BLE, commonly used for classic Bluetooth in previous social sensing work, is difficult due to high signal variability at farther distances, especially when considering real-world sensing scenarios such as carrying the smartphone in a pocket. Second, I will present a new fingerprinting method for room-level indoor positioning that relies on which beacons are detected, not the RSSI reading, yet has high performance and robustness in real-world sensing situations on-par with or better than some traditional RSSI methods. Finally, I will discuss two case studies, room utilization and friendship prediction from dining visit habits alone, using data collected from a 40-beacon deployment in a campus dining hall, containing nearly 200 users from a sizeable behavioral sensing study, NetHealth. ▼ Monitoring and evaluation assessments of the IRS programmes reveal an inability to meet set IRS coverage targets. The purpose of this was to determine the factors that influence the low IRS coverage. A cross sectional household study was carried out in Lusaka District’s Mtendere, Kanyama and Matero Compounds. Data was collected from heads of households by an interactive method using a scheduled questionnaire.295 households were randomly selected. The sample size was calculated for the coverage rate of 78% plus or minus 5% and at 95% confidence interval. The 78% was derived from the IRS coverage of the 2006/2007 season during which 85% of eligible structures in Lusaka District were targeted Using Epi Info Version 6.0 the Yates corrected P values were calculated using chi square and used to determine relationships and associations between variables. The study established that IRS Coverage was 48.6% which was less than the targeted 85%. There was 36% coverage in Kanyama, 52.2% in Matero and 62% in Mtendere Compounds. Most of the houses (60%) were sprayed during the peak malaria season which is also the rainy season and that Willingness to have IRS had influence on IRS Coverage while community participation in IRS was nonexistent. Significant relationships were found between IRS Coverage and study area (P value<0.001), knowledge of the institution that carried out IRS (P value <0.001) and access to IRS related IEC (P value 0.042). The study found a significant relationship between the respondent’s willingness to have IRS: ability to remember what was heard and/or seen during IRS related IEC (P value 0.040), knowledge of the institution which sprayed (P value <0.001) and benefits anticipated from IRS (<0.001). 66.3% of the respondents own and use mosquito nets of which 45% were untreated, 20% were long lasting nets and 35% were locally treated nets. 62.3% of the respondents whose houses were not sprayed indicated that the sprayers did not come to their houses. Of the 143 houses that were sprayed 2.1% altered the walls after IRS, 34.3% reacted negatively to IRS, sprayers left pesticides on the floor in 7% of the houses there houses. The Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Malaria Control Centre (NMCC) shall find these results useful in planning for the IRS as it highlights areas that need attention. The policy makers ought to continue informing the communities regarding IRS and involving them in IRS activities as well as to monitor the activities of the sprayers whilst carrying out IRS

▼ In this work, we consider the problem of reconstructing a 3D model from a sequence of color and depth frames. Generating such a model has many important applications, ranging from the entertainment industry to real estate. However, transforming the RGBD frames into high-quality 3D models is a challenging problem, especially if additional semantic information is required. In this document, we introduce three projects, which implement various stages of a robust RGBD processing pipeline. First, we consider the challenges arising during the RGBD data capture process. While the depth cameras are providing dense, per-pixel depth measurements, there is a non-trivial error associated with the resulting data. We discuss the depth generation problem and propose an error reduction technique based on estimating an image-space undistortion field. We describe the capture process of the data required for the generation of such an undistortion field. We showcase how correcting the depth measurements improves the reconstruction quality. Second, we address the problem of registering RGBD frames over a long video sequence into a globally consistent 3D model. We propose a ``fine-to-coarse'' global registration algorithm that leverages robust registrations at finer scales to seed detection and enforcement of geometrical constraints, modeled as planar structures, at coarser scales. To test global registration algorithms, we provide a benchmark with 10,401 manually-clicked point correspondences in 25 scenes from the SUN3D dataset. We find that our fine-to-coarse algorithm registers long RGBD sequences better than previous methods. Last, we show how repeated scans of the same space can be used to establish associations between the different observations. Specifically, we consider a situation where 3D scans are acquired repeatedly at sparse time intervals. We develop an algorithm that analyzes these “rescans” and builds a temporal model of a scene with semantic instance information. The proposed algorithm operates inductively by using a temporal model resulting from past observations to infer instance segmentation of a new scan. The temporal model is continuously updated to reflect the changes that occur in the scene over time, providing object associations across time. The algorithm outperforms alternate approaches based on state-of-the-art networks for semantic instance segmentation. Advisors/Committee Members: Funkhouser, Thomas A (advisor).

▼ In this thesis it is investigated to what extent it is possible to accurately model path loss in indoor environments using a simple empirical approach. Two kinds of radio access antenna deployments are investigated: 1) standard dipole antennas and 2) leaky cables. For the case of standard dipole antenna deployment, a few well established empirical models are integrated in order to account for the main observed propagation mechanisms. One important propagation mechanism is wave guiding in corridors. It has been shown that a model designed for street microcells (“The recursive model”) combined with the power law model (combined model) well describes this wave guiding propagation. Some inaccuracies have, however, been observed when the direct pathway is dominating. In this master thesis it is therefore investigated if the model accuracy may be improved by integration of the Keenan-Motley and the Devasirvatham model (modified combined model) accounting for loss due to obstructions along the direct pathway. In this work, the primary models used for the case of leaky cable antenna deployments are the Keenan-Motley model (for short distances) and the modified combined model (for large distances). In order to improve and evaluate the modeling, propagation measurements have been carried out at the 2.44 GHz band in an indoor office environment. The measurement data, i.e., the calibrated frequency response of the channel, is obtained using the network analyzer measurement technique by sweeping the frequency over a range of 80 MHz around the center frequency. Hence, the path gain measured in dB-scale is obtained as the difference between the transmitted power and the received power. The combined model and the modified combined model are evaluated and parameterized based on the conducted measurements. The accuracy of the combined model is improved by the implemented modifications. In our case, the standard deviation error is reduced from 5-19 dB to 2-4 dB. Moreover, the measurements show that using leaky cables results in a better coverage in rooms alongside the corridor compared with using dipole antennas. Also the interference into adjacent cells is reduced using leaky cables compared with using dipole antennas.

▼ This research concentrates on creating wellbeing by performance; behaviour and technical performance of materials and products in office buildings. This research is focused on the case study conducted at; the headquarter of a bank in the Netherlands, whereby the building users are criticizing the indoor comfort. Moreover, the building materials are end-of-life and the building is using a large amount of energy. The following research question is answered: ‘How can the indoor comfort be improved in a circular way, by creating an optimal floorplan including the interior and technical aspects for, the case study, one pilot floor of the headquarter of a bank in the Netherlands, while taking the energy consumption into account?’ Within this study different research methodologies are applied. The first research method is literature study and reference projects to gather knowledge about the indoor comfort with the following possible stressors; indoor air quality, thermal comfort, light and visual quality and acoustic comfort and circularity within the building environment. This information is derived from the Dutch regulations, certification rating systems, the case study and articles with the same theme. The literature study and reference projects are analysed to draw up criteria which the measurements and the design of the floorplan must meet. The second research method is material analyses to identify the materials and products which are used in the interior of the case study and how they can be improved to contribute to the indoor comfort, circularity and energy efficiency. The third research method is analysing the existing survey conducted in 2019 by the company Leesman. Analysing this survey can profile the building users and rate the satisfaction level of their workplace, activities, and facilities. The last research method is analysing the performed measurements. To study the current situation of the case study by testing the indoor comfort stressors on the criteria prepared with literature study and reference projects. These measurements are performed with 24 GreenMe cubes which records the indoor comfort values every ten minutes for three weeks, which resulted in 3024 measurement points within ten categories of the indoor comfort stressors. The research results are translated into a circular and indoor comfort framework and floorplan design including the interior and technical aspects. The analyses results show that it is desired to renovate the headquarter of the bank in the Netherlands. This conclusion is based on the following results of this study, first of all most of the materials and products are not demountable. Therefore it cannot be cleaned well and it pollutes the air. Moreover, it is not fully circular when only the materials are obtained sustainable, but cannot be reused or remanufactured after its first lifecycle, when they are not demountable or additives are added. ▼ The recent advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have started a new era in sensor networks and smart assistant systems. Various types of sensing platforms are being deployed to understand the in-depth behavior of people while maintaining human comfort. Technology that tracks people inside buildings could become a key enabler for many applications in this space. Indoor localization is a process to find the exact location of devices, objects or people inside buildings in which GPS service is mostly unreliable. Existing indoor localization and tracking solutions can be divided into two main categories: passive and active solutions. Passive asset tracking systems are scalable, but their accuracy is limited to a few meters (Room Level). On the other hand, in active tracking scenarios, the target has to carry a tacking device, which makes the location estimation more accurate and robust. In this dissertation, we improve the scalability and robustness of indoor tracking solutions. Ultrawideband (UWB)-based indoor localization techniques are one of the well-known and popular active indoor tracking systems. Large bandwidth of UWB signals makes them resilient to multipath fading problem and brings the ability to estimate the location of a target with a few centimeters error. Despite the recent advancement of the accuracy of UWB based indoor tracking systems, the scalability of these systems did not receive enough attention from the research community until the last few years. In this dissertation, we focus on four primary challenges in scalability of UWB systems: adaptively finding optimum UWB physical layer setting to achieve best ranging performance while maintaining application requirements, reducing deployment constraints by proposing single anchor UWB indoor localization, studying and mitigating the impact of multi-user interference on UWB ranging, and combining ranging traffic with non-ranging traffic to increase the applicability of UWB networks for non-ranging applications. In our modern cities, the large majority of the activities take place indoors and training is no exception. Thermal comfort at high metabolic rates inside buildings is to be maintained as much as possible without sacrificing energy saving. Indoor thermal comfort level is the result of a combination of various parameters and air movement is one of them together with air temperature, air humidity and radiant temperature. Making use of localized airflows can compensate for the necessity of cooling a room. Most research, though, has been focused on people with low metabolic rate, meaning that more research on improving thermal comfort of people training is required. The aim of this study is to test how airflows with different characteristics and more specifically air velocity, turbulence intensity and power spectral density can improve thermal comfort of people training indoors. Training subjects were asked to evaluate themselves a number of different airflows. More specifically, human subjects were asked to exercise indoors using a cycling machine. At certain moments during this procedure airflows were introduced and subjects were asked to fill in a questionnaire concerning their thermal condition. This procedure was repeated for each of the airflows. This way, the impact of the three parameters mentioned above on the thermal condition of a subject training indoors could be evaluated. Before the experimental procedure described, the airflows to be experienced by the subjects had to be determined. Consequently, information about the pattern of the airflows created by various set-ups was gathered by recording and further analyzing the velocity value by time in different locations inside the airflows. Throughout this analysis, the most appropriate airflows for the experiments with human subjects were chosen. As reflected in the answers of the participants the introduction of the airflows had, in overall, a positive impact. Furthermore, the increase of the velocity and the turbulence intensity and the existence of power in frequencies higher than 0.1 Hz resulted in an increased cooling capacity. The increase in turbulence intensity and the existence of power in higher frequencies resulted, additionally, in a less pleasant for the subjects airflow. Based on the results, the optimum between the airflows could be selected as well.

▼ En el presente trabajo de investigación se trata de un prototipo de sistema de localización, ubicación y orientación en espacios Indoor. Los sistemas de posicionamiento han alcanzado un gran éxito cuando se realiza al aire libre. En la actualidad existe un gran número de sistemas y dispositivos comerciales que se basan en la localización por medio de sistema global de navegación por satélite (GNSS). Sin embargo, estos sistemas se han mostrado inútiles en espacios cerrados (Indoor), es decir, dentro de edificios, no habiéndose llegado a conseguir un único sistema que alcance el nivel de éxito de su homólogo en el exterior. Una de las líneas de desarrollo más importante en los últimos años es desarrollar una tecnología de localización y seguimiento, equiparable en espacios Indoor al éxito conseguido en los espacios Outdoor. El principal problema es que los ambientes Indoor tienen una gran variabilidad con respecto al ambiente, pudiendo tener los edificios varias alturas, ser espacios con comportamiento estático o funcionalmente dinámico y cambiante. Además, las superficies pueden tener diferentes texturas, así como diferentes accesos a las diferentes partes del edificio. También pueden influir los obstáculos tanto a nivel del mobiliario como a nivel del público que transite por él. Por último, existe un problema adicional con las interacciones que los elementos tecnológicos ya instalados en el edificio puedan producir al nuevo sistema de localización, tales como la instalación eléctrica, la iluminación, las fuentes de alimentación, en definitiva, todos aquellos dispositivos que puedan provocar un campo electromagnético. Esto muestra la necesidad de encontrar una solución técnica que permita calcular la posición de las personas en espacios cerrados con un nivel de fiabilidad y error aceptable. En nuestra investigación nos vamos a basar en los denominados Servicios Basados en Localización (LBS), que constituyen un conjunto de aplicaciones y servicios basados en la capacidad de localizar la posición de un usuario y ofrecerle servicios relacionados con su posición y sus planes de desplazamiento. La información sobre donde nos encontramos, cuales son los posibles obstáculos hasta nuestro destino, pasos que debemos dar hasta llegar al mismo, rutas óptimas y/o alternativas, etc. es útil para nuestra orientación y planificación del trayecto. La estructura del presente estudio es la siguiente: en el capítulo 1 haremos una breve introducción de la problemática y la estructura del trabajo; en el capítulo 2 se hablara de las distintas redes inalámbricas que nos encontramos hoy en día, entrando en profundidad sobre las que vamos a utilizar en el sistema y en la aplicación que se desarrollará; en el capítulo 3 se verá la problemática de las personas con discapacidad en dichos entornos; en el capítulo 4 se explicará la metodología utilizada en la experimentación para comprobar el funcionamiento del sistema y la aplicación; en el capítulo 5 se hablará sobre las distintas librerías que hay en el mercado, así como sobre la nos… Advisors/Committee Members: Alcantud Marín, Francisco (advisor).

▼ The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the most popular positioning system among some operational Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). However, GNSS suffer from accuracy deterioration and interruption of services in dense urban areas and are almost unavailable indoors. Although high-sensitivity receivers improve signal acquisition indoors, multipath is still be a challenging problem that affects accuracy especially indoors where a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver almost never exist. Moreover, the wireless signal features are significantly jeopardized by obstacles and constructions indoors. To address these challenges, this research came in the context of proposing an alternative positioning system that is designed for GPS-denied environment and especially for indoors. Cramer-Rao Lower-Bound (CRLB) analysis was used to estimate the lower bound accuracy of different positioning methods indoors. Based on CRLB analysis, this research approached the wireless positioning problem indoors utilizing received signal strength (RSS) to achieve the following: 1) Developing new estimation methods to model the wireless RSS patterns in indoors. 2) Designing adaptive RSS-based wireless positioning methods for indoors. 3) Establishing a consistent framework for indoor wireless positioning systems. 4) Developing new methods to integrate inertial/odometer-based navigation systems with the developed wireless positioning methods for further improvements. The theoretical basis of the work was built on nonlinear stochastic estimation techniques including Particle Filtering, Gaussian Process Regression, Fast Orthogonal Search, Least-Squares, and Radial Basis Functions Neural Networks. All the proposed wireless positioning methods were developed and physically realized on Android-based smart-phones using the IEEE 802.11 WLANs (WiFi). In addition, successful integration with inertial/odometer sensors of mobile robots has been performed on embedded systems. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results showed significant improvements in modeling RSS indoors dynamically without offline training achieving a positioning accuracy of 1-3 meters. Sub-meter accuracy was achieved via integration with inertial/odometer sensors.
