This thesis addresses the reconstitution of the connection between the State and the trade union movement in Venezuela between 1999 and 2015. Paradoxically, Chávez rhetorical radicalization is concurrent with more conservative practices; one can observe the contention of a revolutionary situation that has become a “Thermidorian situation”. The trade union movement, marginalized actor during this period, emerges as a prism to grasp these transformations. Frequently used to define Chávez administration, populism, even freed from its two main pitfalls, “denigration of the masses” and fuzzy decision-making, and even contained within Latin-American area, seems too much imprecise. This case study provides an update of the concept of incorporation developed by David and Ruth Berins Collier in post-neoliberal times in which Venezuela would be part of the version favouring mobilization over control. A high level of pollicisation characterizes the trade union field, which organization is controlled by the adoption of a new labour law. We show the specificities of the second incorporation wave: formed on a territorial rather than corporatist basis, with the informal sector rather than with than the peasantry as its popular class outside employee relations of production. Studying the trajectories of the executive committee members of the three consecutively ruling…

Extending the Social Model of Migration and Incorporation to Include Migrant Occupational Communities: The Case of Ghanaian Nurses.

▼ The flow of skilled migrants to Canada has increased significantly over recent decades. Considerable research has focused on explaining skilled migration and economic
incorporation outcomes, with a focus on economic factors. This qualitative dissertation examines how skilled workers come to the decision to migrate to Canada, and how they navigate the skilled economic
incorporation process and challenges that emerged along the way, with a focus on the social forces influencing these processes. To do so, the dissertation drew on the early social migration model advanced by Massey and his colleagues (Massey et al.1987; Massey et al. 1993), but extended this model by analyzing the influence of the migrant occupational community among skilled migrants.
The project primarily draws on 18 interviews with Ghanaian nurses of varying ages, seniority levels and types of nursing training who migrated to Canada. The analysis revealed key social processes, within both the migrant residential community and what this dissertation has termed the â migrant occupational communityâ , which influenced skilled migration and
incorporation. The migrant residential community had a generally positive influence on skilled migration perceptions and aspirations through a local culture of migration, as well as on migration decision-making via general information on better living conditions transmitted via migrant residential networks, similar to that predicted in the early social model.
The migrant occupational community also had an importance influence on skilled migration. The migrant occupational culture influenced skilled migration perceptions and aspirations in positive and negative ways, while migrant occupational networks influenced migration decision-making by providing information and encouragement related to occupational conditions and opportunities abroad. The migrant occupational community played an even more significant role in shaping the skilled
incorporation process, primarily via migrant occupational networks and to some extent migrant occupational associations, which helped navigate the numerous steps to skilled
incorporation to resume the nursing profession.
This dissertation makes two contributions. First, and primarily, it extends the early social migration model to include the migrant occupational community found among skilled migrants. Second, this project moves beyond an analysis of skilled migration and
incorporation outcomes, to an in-depth analysis of the processes of skilled migration and
incorporation, in line with Masseyâ s holistic social migration model focused on low-skilled migration, as well as a growing number of skilled migration studies.

▼ The chromium (Cr) isotope system has recently gained interest as a paleoproxy for tracking atmospheric oxygen levels due to the presence of large isotope fractionations in association with redox reactions. One important assumption in the current framework is that redox reactions cause the most significant Cr isotope fractionations, and that these variations are faithfully preserved during the formation and burial of Cr-containing sedimentary rocks. Carbonate sediments are commonly used for Cr isotope paleoproxy studies due to their stratigraphic ubiquity and the potential that they record isotopic signals from shallow seawater. It is critical to investigate and understand potential isotope fractionations caused by Cr
incorporation into carbonate minerals for paleoproxy improvement. We investigated Cr isotope fractionation during Cr(VI) co-precipitation with different calcium carbonate mineral phases (aragonite, calcite, and amorphous calcium carbonate), with a specific focus on the effects of precipitation rate and aqueous Cr concentration. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the mineral phase and morphology of the solid phase precipitates. X- ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to determine oxidation state and the local bonding environments of incorporated Cr ions. Chromium isotope fractionation was measured using a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP- MS). The isotope fractionation signatures measured from this preliminary study are significant when compared to previous Cr isotope fractionation measured in carbonate sediments and should be considered in further attempts to better constrain isotopic mass balance of Cr in modern and ancient oceans.

▼ Urbanization in British Columbia has generally occurred by way of two processes. It has either occurred in relation to the establishment of a single enterprise community in the resource frontier, or, it has occurred in relation to the growth of established municipalities in which previously non urban areas surrounding established municipalities have become urbanized. The urbanization of previously rural areas has, in most cases, resulted in the need for basic municipal services as well as an institutional structure to administer these services and to provide a basic public decision-making structure in the community.
Although in the case of single enterprise communities the Provincial Government has followed a definite policy in the implementation of an institutional structure in these communities, no definite policy has been achieved for the implementation of such a structure in what have become known as peripheral communities. These communities have been permitted to follow a number of alternate mechanisms for the provision and administration of services although incorporation under the Municipal Act or the Water Act has generally been viewed by these communities as the only viable mechanism for (i) the provision and administration of services and (ii) the implementation of a public decision making structure in the community. The investigation of one community's attempt to incorporate under both the Municipal Act and the Water Act revealed that the present incorporation process as it is presented in the Municipal Act and as it is prescribed by the Water Rights Branch is not as effective as it might be. This ineffectiveness was found to derive from two sources. The first of these sources was found to be the inflexibility of the corporate forms permitted under both the Municipal Act and the Water Act. In terms of the incorporation process as outlined in the Municipal Act it was found that the population criteria as well as obligations which are established for each municipal form deterred communities from assuming a local government structure for the reason that although communities had a sufficient population level, they were unable to financially support a local government structure of the type outlined in the Municipal Act. In terms of the incorporation process for water improvement districts a similar inflexibility was discerned although this inflexibility did not derive from the Water Act per se but, resulted from the interpretation of the Water Act by the Water Rights Branch and the Department of Municipal Affairs. These two agencies viewed water improvement districts as corporate bodies with only limited objects and powers. Consequently, communities wishing to incorporate under the Water Act for the exercise of a number of objects are deterred from assuming the status of water Improvement district. A second reason for the ineffectiveness of the incorporation process was found to be the lack of communication between the agencies entrusted with the incorporation process and the communities wishing to…

This philosophical work is about the logic of incorporation (Einverleibung) related to the esthetic. The main thesis of this study is the following one : the aesthetic is above the ontology, the aesthetic logic of the body is above the logic of the be. The main purpose of this work is thus to unfold the concept of incorporation and to link it with the concepts of « decorporation » and « recorporation », and with the stoic concept of krasis which means the blend or mixing of the bodies. The first hypothesis is that this is not the body which incorporates, but that the body is « generated » by an incorporation-process. But how can we describe the incorporation if this is not a phenomenon, but a process which passes through phenomenality itself ? How can we describe the genesis of the sensibility and the sensitivity? These questions require an aesthetic heuristic between the enquiry (Hume) and the genealogy (Nietzsche). We have also to distinguish incorporation, incarnation (embodiment) and organism, to show that flesh and organs are incorporated. This involves a specific thesis about Kant's schematism : the transcendental is generated by the incorporation of schemes. This works has two parts : the first is about the incorporation and the aesthetic as logic of experience. The second one is about the stoic comprehension of incorporation.

The term culture system with the incorporation of legumes at flowering between the
lines of the main crop, is a novelty for Angolan agriculture when it comes to food crops
in the group of roots and tubers which fits cassava and even in the case of cereals. Our
work aims to: Contribute to sustainable agriculture in the areas of cassava production
in Angola, as well as the transfer of technology to promote the improvement of
agricultural production systems in terms of family farmers, who constitute the majority
of small, medium farms and why not also in the creation of large companies, resorting
to low-cost technologies and the scope of farmers, improve the productivity of this
crop and the quality of final product, thereby providing better living conditions, socioeconomic
and environmental practice sustainable agriculture by maintaining and
improving the physical characteristics and soil fertility, using the system of crops, with
the use of leguminous trees and shrubs Leucaena and Cajanus fairly disclosed in the
country. The incorporation of legumes in two lines of cassava by a total of two cultural
cycle of cassava a year, promoted: greater availability of soil nutrients, increased
production per unit area, improved quality of tuberous roots. It also led to good
correlation between the production and macro soil nutrients other than phosphorus

▼ As our understanding of complex cellular processes advances, nucleic acids, the biomolecules of life, consistently appear as key players. The ability to explore the structure, dynamics, and recognition of nucleic acids has been accessible due to many techniques. Specifically, the sensitivity of fluorescent spectroscopy has made it one of the most useful tools for the detailed study of macromolecules. The development of synthetically modified nucleosides has been driven by the lack of naturally occurring nucleosides with favorable photophysical features that allow for probing of nucleic acid-containing systems. The design of the ideal probe should ensure high structural resemblance to the native nucleosides, minimizing the perturbation of the biomolecular architecture, a feature commonly referred to as isomorphicity. This is particularly challenging when one aims at shifting the emission bands further into the red spectral domains. Three related structural designs of synthetic 6-aza-uridines were implemented to facilitate a bathochromic shift of emission bands. First, the electronics of 5-substituted uridines were altered by replacing the pyrimidine core with the more electron withdrawing 6-aza-uridine, yielding a red shift as well as hyperchromic effect and higher brightness. In the second design, to further shift the emission into the red region, the polarization of this conjugated electron-poor/electron-rich biaryl system was enhanced by directly conjugating donor groups through an extended aromatic system. The last design resulted in a synthetic uridine surrogate, which can undergo a proton transfer in the excited state (a phenomenon known as ESIPT), thus facilitating a relatively large bathochromic shift while fulfilling the requirements of isomorphic nucleosides. Furthermore, due to their structural similarity, these isomorphic mimics should fabricate functions and maintain bio-compatibility similar to native building blocks. It has been shown that T7 RNA polymerase accepts the triphosphate-functionalized thiophene 6-aza-uridines, which can determine the affinity of aminoglycoside antibiotics for the singly-modified fluorescent A-site. This finding is important to the biochemical community as it introduces a new attractive pyrimidine analogue, which can be used for probing RNA targets with therapeutic potentials. To investigate more than uridine analogues, the affinity of T7 RNA polymerase for synthetic pyrimidine and purine mimics was compared and closely evaluated. Subsequently, the partially and fully modified transcripts were successfully synthesized and utilized in a ligation reaction, thereby showing that they can moderately mimic functions and bio-compatibility of the native strands. These results point to intriguing future applications of all four mimics, either site specific modification can be envisioned or partially and fully modified constructs can be utilized for biochemical assays.

▼ Culture has been shown to have a significant impact on health care disparities and, more specifically, in the treatment of mental health. As a result, research has highlighted the importance of cultural competence in all stages of psychotherapy. The need for cultural competence has garnered much attention allowing its research to proliferate and inform guidelines for mental health treatment. However, despite the known importance of cultural competence there is a dearth of knowledge informing how a mental health professional should incorporate cultural data into their psychotherapeutic practice. This creates large problems for the field as it leaves many professionals without a sound model for the application of cultural competence.
This study was developed in an effort to bridge existing gaps in cultural competence research. Due to the lack of knowledge about the process by which cultural data is incorporated into psychotherapy this study utilized a qualitative phenomenological approach to better understand the phenomena. Eight licensed and practicing psychologists were recruited for interviews that occurred in person or through Skype video conferencing. Participants were asked 15 questions that were developed as part of a semi-structured interview protocol. Interviews were recorded using a digital audio recording device. Data analysis involved transcribing all participants’ interviews, coding the validated transcripts for independent units, and organizing these units into categories, subcategories, and subsets providing a description of the participants’ lived experiences. Results indicated the emergence of three major categories: the nature of cultural competence, therapist responsibility to bring culture to the forefront, and application of culture. Within the first category two subcategories emerged: willingness to learn, and knowing what you do not know. The second subcategory contained two parts, A and B. Subcategory two-A, knowing what you do not know, showed a development of four subsets that provided further description of the nature of cultural competence: asking the client, no assumptions, cultural data gathered at intake and throughout, and in-depth knowledge from interaction/experiences. Subcategory two-B, not knowing what you do not know, described the limits on acquisition of cultural competence and did not produce any subsets. The second major category did not produce any subcategories. The third and final major category was shown to have three subcategories: assessment, intervention, and outcome evaluation.

▼ Genetic encoding non-canonical amino acids (NCAAs) is a facile approach to synthesize proteins with homogenous modifications. In my graduate study, I demonstrated the application of this approach in the synthesis of a variety of proteins with site-specific chemical and post-translational modifications.
My first effort was to synthesize and demonstrate the genetic installation of N^(ԑ)-methyl-L-lysine (Kme1) into proteins indirectly via the
incorporation of N^(ԑ)-(2-Nitrobenzyl)oxycarbonyl-N^(ԑ)-methyl-L-lysine and its following photolytic deprotection to recover Kme1. This novel method has been applied in the Liu group at Texas A&M Department of Chemistry for understanding epigenetics roles of nucleosomal post-translational lysine modifications.
In order to develop an approach for easy access to proteins with defined two-color labeling, the next endeavor in my graduate study was to design and demonstrate a novel method for the genetic encoding of two different NCAAs in one protein that can be further modified to introduce two dyes with different colors. I showed that NCAAs with two different functionalities could be successfully incorporated into one protein using a model protein glutamine binding protein (QBP), I demonstrated two dyes that form a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) pair could be successfully covalently linked to two NCAAs in a one-pot and catalyst-free fashion. The synthesized two-dye labeled QBP was successfully applied to undergo the folding/unfolding analysis of QBP in the presence of guanidinium.
I was also involved in the synthesis of proteins with hydroxylamine and hydrazine groups for their efficient labeling with ketos. I synthesized Nԑ-allyl protected hydroxylamine- and hydrazine-containing NCAAs and devised a method for their
incorporation into superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP).
Similarly to the genetic encoding of Kme1, the direct
incorporation of N^(ԑ), N^(ԑ)-dimethyl-L-lysine (Kme2) also suffers from its structural similarity with lysine. In order to genetically install Kme2 in proteins, we aimed to genetically incorporate allysine into proteins followed by reductive amination with dimethylamine to make Kme2. Several allysine precursors were synthesized. I demonstrated that they could be site-selectively incorporated into proteins and deprotected to recover allysine. The Liu group is now in the process to carry out the reductive amination reaction to synthesize proteins with Kme2.
An important biological study I was involved in was to synthesize histone H3 with different acylation types at its multiple lysines and then I used these proteins to probe substrate and modification type specificities of one group of histone deacetylases, sirtuins. H3 variants with four modification types, acetylation, propionylation, butyrylation, and crotonylation at about 10 lysine sites were recombinantly expressed. They were used to probe sirtuin enzymes. Based on our results, we conclude that Sirt1 and Sirt2 act as universal histone deacylases regardless of lysine sites or…

▼ This thesis examines the notion that tikanga is well positioned to address issues confronting Māori and other indigenous groups who strive to achieve self-determination and the freedom to be and to do. This work is inspired by the late John Te Rangi-āniwaniwa Rangihau’s statement, “Ko te rongoā kei roto i ō tātau ringa” (1987, p. 24), which promotes the notion that through culture and identity Māori already have within their grasp the answers to contemporary matters of import in te ao Māori. This thesis inverts that statement and presents it as a question querying whether indeed the remedy is at hand and, if so, could tikanga and cultural identity be that remedy. To that end this study deliberately sets out to examine if the rongoa of self-determination, power and freedom can be achieved by the assertion and application of Māori ways of being and doing, that is to say by exercising tikanga.
Understanding notions of tikanga, sovereignty, and indigeneity is pivotal to this study as is articulating the notion of third space. This thesis argues that these four notions are interconnected when considering ideas of self-determination for disempowered groups. A case study forms a large part of this work and focuses on an indigenous group operating from a pre-contact tupuna worldview and based on He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni 1835/Declaration of Independence of New Zealand 1835. This particular group was chosen because it presented as being a point of intersect for the four notions of tikanga, sovereignty, indigeneity and the third space.
This thesis argues that whilst tikanga is a powerful mechanism for determining and rationalising ways of being and doing it has less to offer at a pragmatic level when it comes to effecting change in the status quo. However, when overlaid with the third space lens new perspectives can be enunciated and new opportunities detected which in turn can lead to determining new actions. Through this study it becomes clear that the assertion and application of tikanga contributes to, but on its own is not, the whole answer.

▼ Part A The metabolism of mustard (Sinapis alba) seeds wet at sub-germination temperatures has been studied using tritium
incorporation as an index of metabolism. The theory and scope of the method are discussed. The enzymic reactions known in 1964 are surveyed one by one, suggesting which will, or will not, incorporate tritium from THO into specified metabolites, or cannot be confidently predicted either way. Improvements have been made in the chromatography procedure. At 0°, many of the normal germination chemical reactions proceed, but about one tenth as fast as at 24°. Amino-acids are being metabolised within 2 h of wetting the seeds, and malic and citric acids within 4 h. Within 24 h lipids and fructose are undergoing reactions. An unidentified compound “M”, not reported in normal germination, is being metabolised within 48 h. Another aberration from normal is the absence of detectable succinate metabolism. Labelling of the solid residue (insoluble in ethanol and in water) always occurs, shown to be largely non-metabolic. To explain the non-germination of seeds at temperatures near 0°, it is hypothesized that the Krebs cycle is qualitatively altered, perhaps by “wasting away” of glutamate to 4-aminobutyrate instead of its routing into the Krebs cycle as alpha-oxoglutarate.
Part B A method has been developed for studying the metabolism of dry seeds, spores and pollen by exposure to THO vapour. Dry Pinus radiata pollen labels many compounds. A few have been identified and are common metabolites. It may be that the metabolism of dry pollen is not qualitatively different from its germination reactions. Dry mustard seeds and spores of the fungus Pithomyces chartarum give, in contrast to pollen, patterns of
incorporation very different from those in early germination.

▼ Migration has led to two competing changes in American and European electorates: an increasing share of ethnic minorities, and growing sympathy for far-right, anti-immigrant populist parties. Despite this, political
incorporation remains an under-theorized dimension of the processes by which immigrants and natives interact to form shared societies. In the context of rising anti-immigrant sentiment, how do young adults from migrant families enter the political arena? What relationship exists between the political climate vis-à-vis immigration and their willingness to engage in domestic politics? I seek to examine the consequences of anti-immigrant sentiment for migrant-origin minorities’ political behavior through quantitative and qualitative cross-national comparisons.
I begin by using cross-national quantitative models to analyze data on political behaviors in the United States and 24 European countries. The results show that children of immigrants participate in formal and activist politics at rates on par with their native-origin peers, but vote at lower rates, holding socioeconomic and demographic characteristics constant. I demonstrate, further, that countries where foreign nationals are allowed more rights have higher rates of migrant minority political participation.
Using a most-similar case approach, I compare political engagement among the second generation in Denmark, where the anti-immigration party is well established, and Sweden, where the far-right populist party was marginal until recently. Survey results show that Swedish political party youth wing members are more supportive of equal representation than their Danish peers, yet migrant minorities are underrepresented in youth wings in both countries. This is evidence that youth political organizations perpetuate unequal access to key sites of political socialization, although not always intentionally.
Finally, in-depth interviews with 74 young adults in Stockholm and Copenhagen demonstrate that migrant minorities become alienated from mainstream electoral politics because they perceive mainstream parties as unwilling to address ethno-religious prejudice. Many of these young people find alternative strategies to promote social change, such as ethnic or religious organizations, or neighborhood volunteering. These studies demonstrate negative, if unforeseen, consequences of anti-immigration rhetoric: the politics of closed borders alienates minority citizens from democratic participation.

▼ As immigrants have moved beyond traditional immigrant gateways in recent years, local and state restrictive immigrant ordinances have proliferated. Although scholars have studied the determinants of these policies, we still know little about their social consequences.
In Chapter 2, I draw on ethnographic and interview data collected between 2007 and 2011 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, which passed an anti-immigrant ordinance in 2006. I find that the law affected both immigrants and natives alike. It motivated anti-immigrant activism, hardened native views of Hispanics (regardless of documentation status), and increased native whites' fears of lawlessness and crime. Chapter 3 examines whether similar restrictionist immigration policies also increased local concern about crime and disorder beyond Hazleton. I find that the proposal of anti-immigrant ordinances was associated with a 6 percent increase in handgun sales in the Pennsylvania counties in which these policies were formally considered. I find that local newspapers increasingly published stories linking immigrants with crime following the proposal of these policies. I argue that these menacing portrayals of immigrants had the unintended effect of increasing social anxiety, which increased gun purchases. These results are replicated using concealed gun permits data from South Carolina. Finally, in Chapter 4, I examine the impact of Arizona's SB 1070, a controversial law that required local authorities to verify the documentation of individuals suspected of being undocumented, on public sentiment towards immigrants. Using sentiment analysis and a difference-in-difference estimation technique to analyze more than 300,000 tweets published in Nevada and Arizona in 2010, I find that the implementation of SB 1070 had a significant negative impact on the sentiment of messages regarding immigrants, Mexicans, and Hispanics posted by Twitter users in Arizona. In contrast, the bill did not affect public discourse on Asians or African-Americans.

▼ Water solubility of olivine was investigated with controlled pyroxene activity at 0.3 to 5 GPa and 1473 K. Its dependence on pyroxene activity and water fugacity with the activation volume was studies to place constraints on the hydrogen incorporation mechanisms in olivine. Results of water solubility in olivine indicate that hydrogen incorporated with metal vacancies is the dominant mechanism for samples buffered with pyroxene at all pressures. Hydration and dehydration experiments were carried out to study the kinetic properties of hydrogen ions in olivine to determine the diffusivity of hydrous defects associated with individual peaks in IR spectra. Results of diffusivity indicate that hydrogen diffuses in olivine as interstitial hydrogen ions regardless of the incorporation mechanisms. Silicon diffusivity was also study to better understand the point defect chemistry of olivine.

▼ This project examines the
experiences of a group of formerly incarcerated persons involved in
community organizing efforts for felon empowerment. Scholarly works
often focus on what is being done on behalf of the formerly
incarcerated, this work highlights how men and women with records
advocate for themselves. Drawing on 18 months of participant
observation and 18 in-depth interviews with a Chicago based group
called FORCE (Fighting to Overcome Records and Create Equality) I
found that meanings of redemption were essential to advocacy and
operated as an imperative. The redemption imperative both
constrained and enabled advocacy. It constrained advocacy in its
narrow formulation of redemption. In this formulation the redeemed
were those who were able to demonstrate qualities such as being
educated, persons of faith, and who made the decision to “turn
their lives around.” However, FORCE members, through redemption
were empowered to engage politically. This engagement sometimes led
to expanded rights by exposing discrimination. Redemption also had
its limits as a resource for political engagement. FORCE members
were not always able to convince legislators, and community members
of their redeemed status. These findings call into question the
perpetual nature of proving redemption in the lives of the formerly
incarcerated, and the irony of its limitations as a resource for
empowerment.

If the links between food and religion have weakened in a secularized world, feeding practices are still a marker of identity and attachment to "God". With this in mind, we are interested in the emergence of a consumption of halal products by Berber Moroccan migrants and their descendants living in Moselle. Our project is a desire to use this consumption through a legacy of both family, cultural and political trajectory that is specific for each actor. Eating Halal is discussed here in terms of a religious fact with multiple dimensions, both collective, material, symbolic and significant. If eating halal refers to dietary laws specific to Islam religious system, this practice does not explain why an individual meets a requirement, a prohibition. Drawing on the approaches of Michel de Certeau, Jean-Noël Ferrié and Saba Mahmood, we show how an individual, through the incorporation, embodies faith and built its membership. Far from appearing as an essentialization of feeding practices, eating halal produces new types of eaters for whom the believe is a technique designed to create for the actor a capability of agency and reflexivity.

This work deals with the synthesis and the dispersion of luminescent nanomaterials dedicated to the fight against counterfeiting. The nanomaterials (silica and rare earth oxides) own an optical code which is dispersed into the material to be tagged. The silica is synthesized by a reverse microemulsion sol-gel process. Organic fluorescent dyes and organo-lanthanides metal complexes are incorporated into the nanoparticles and it is shown that the nature of the dye influences its incorporation. The fluorescence is obtained without any covalent link between the dye and the silica matrix. After the synthesis, the nanoparticles are functionalized into the microemulsion. An original method is proposed to characterize the functionalization and it is shown that the functionalization is on the whole homogeneous but that at the nanoscale some nanodomains appear. The rare-earth oxides are obtained by collaboration. Two surface treatments are particularly studied : an hybrid approach based on the encapsulation of the nanoparticles into a polysiloxane shell followed by an adapted functionalization; and a second approach based on the use of surfactants. In particular, several well-known surfactants are compared. These modified nanoparticles are dispersed and stabilized into liquid media such as water or 2-Butanone. They are then incorporated into three polymers (PMMA, PVA and PVC) and it is shown that a good dispersion…

This work deals with the elaboration of luminescent nanoparticles based on organolanthanides forbioimaging and optical coding. The organolanthanides were embedded without covalent linking inorder to preserve their remarkable luminescent properties and chemical stability. Two differenttypes of nanoparticles have been studied: polymer latexes and silica particles that were bothsynthesized in dispersed media. The silica nanoparticles were synthesized by a reverse microemulsion-mediated sol-gel process. Twoluminescent lanthanide chelates originally dissolved into water droplets were physically trapped intothe amorphous silica during its formation. A novel method based on a radioactive Eu(III) probe hasbeen developed to study the incorporation process. The physicochemical properties of the differentchelates had a strong influence on their localization within the particles and on the measuredincorporation efficiencies. This study finally allowed us to investigate the effect of Gd(III) complexesconfinement into silica…

Storage of Xe in silicate minerals has been proposed to explain the ‘Missing Xenon’ issue, i.e. the low Xe abundance in the Earth’s and Mars’ atmospheres compared to other noble gases and chondrites. However, data about Xe incorporation in minerals remain scarce due to high Xe volatility preventing studies at ambient conditions. Xe incorporation in silicates has been proposed based on experimental evidences at high pressures (P) and temperatures (T). In this PhD thesis we bring new constraints on Xe incorporation in major Earth minerals of the continental crust (quartz and feldspar) and upper mantle (olivine). Xe-bearing samples have been synthesized, characterized ex situ and investigated in situ at high P-T conditions. Theoretical calculations have been performed to propose Xe incorporation sites able to reproduce experimental observations. In olivine and quartz, a Xe for Si substitution is likely, with the formation of at least partially covalent Xe-O bonds of 1.98-2.09 Å. Up to 0.4 at% Xe could be stored in olivine at depth, and in quartz a phase transition toward a new (Xe,Si)O2 phase is evidenced at high T. In presence of Fe and Xe, a phase separation is observed between a Fe-rich phase and a Fe-poor phase for feldspars and olivine, with Xe and Fe stabilizing each other. In presence of excess water, Xe is going into the fluid phase for…

▼ Gene network modeling is one of the major goals of systems biology research. Gene network modeling targets the middle layer of active biological systems that orchestrate the activities of genes and proteins. Gene network modeling can provide critical information to bridge the gap between causes and effects which is essential to explain the mechanisms underlying disease. Among the network construction tasks, the rewiring of relevant network structure plays critical roles in determining the behavior of diseases. To systematically characterize the selectively activated regulatory components and mechanisms, the modeling tools must be able to effectively distinguish significant rewiring from random background fluctuations. While differential dependency networks cannot be constructed by existing knowledge alone, effective
incorporation of prior knowledge into data-driven approaches can improve the robustness and biological relevance of network inference. Existing studies on protein-protein interactions and biological pathways provide constantly accumulated rich domain knowledge. Though novel
incorporation of biological prior knowledge into network learning algorithms can effectively leverage domain knowledge, biological prior knowledge is neither condition-specific nor error-free, only serving as an aggregated source of partially-validated evidence under diverse experimental conditions. Hence, direct
incorporation of imperfect and non-specific prior knowledge in specific problems is prone to errors and theoretically problematic.
To address this challenge, we propose a novel mathematical formulation that enables
incorporation of prior knowledge into structural learning of biological networks as Gaussian graphical models, utilizing the strengths of both measurement data and prior knowledge. We propose a novel strategy to estimate and control the impact of unavoidable false positives in the prior knowledge that fully exploits the evidence from data while obtains "second opinion" by efficient consultations with prior knowledge. By proposing a significance assessment scheme to detect statistically significant rewiring of the learned differential dependency network, our method can assign edge-specific p-values and specify edge types to indicate one of six biological scenarios. The data-knowledge jointly inferred gene networks are relatively simple to interpret, yet still convey considerable biological information. Experiments on extensive simulation data and comparison with peer methods demonstrate the effectiveness of knowledge-fused differential dependency network in revealing the statistically significant rewiring in biological networks, leveraging data-driven evidence and existing biological knowledge, while remaining robust to the false positive edges in the prior knowledge. We also made significant efforts in disseminating the developed method tools to the research community. We developed an accompanying R package and Cytoscape plugin to provide both batch processing ability and user-friendly graphic interfaces. With the…

▼ This study looks at the linkages between
incorporation
models and public opinion. The intention of the study is to
determine if a state’s
incorporation model shapes public opinion or
if public opinion shapes the
incorporation model. Using Canada,
France, and Great Britain as case studies, I explore the question
of policy responsiveness to shifts in public opinion, as influenced
by immigration, security, and economic concerns. By examining
comparative polling data, major events timelines, and single state
polling information, I determine that both
incorporation models and
public opinion have largely been stable over the past decade in
Canada and France. In contrast, shifting public opinion in Great
Britain has resulted in major changes to the
incorporation model in
place and relations between state and society. This suggests that
there are major differences between the three states in the ways in
which public opinion is incorporated into the decision- and
policy-making process.

▼ This manuscript attempts to broaden scholarship on U.S. ethnic politics and group political incorporation by analyzing the emergence of novel political agents (ethnopolitical entrepreneurs) in evolving suburban spaces (ethnoburbs). The following chapters analyze these phenomena through a case study of the fascinating yet understudied Armenian community of Glendale, California. While Glendale’s Armenian community possesses its own history and character, it also reflects dynamic circumstances occurring in a diverse array of other U.S. suburban communities today, such as those affecting the Chinese in Monterey Park, Vietnamese in Westminster, Filipinos in Daley City, Koreans in Irvine, and many others. These communities force immigration and urban studies scholars to reevaluate traditional assumptions about the urban settlement and political incorporation trajectories of newcomers and other co-ethnic community members. Based upon Glendale’s Armenian community, this manuscript attempts to reorient the scholarship on group political incorporation by unpacking the increasingly important role of ethnopolitical entrepreneurs in contemporary American ethnoburbs. Despite their significance to the political incorporation of immigrants and other group members, ethnopolitical entrepreneurs remain strikingly absent from scholarship on political incorporation. Following the Hart-Celler Act (or Immigration and Neutrality Act) of 1965, immigrants from diverse locations throughout the world began coming to U.S. cities in record numbers. Historically, immigrants with scant resources inhabited city centers and formed ethnic enclaves; some more recent newcomers, however, have brought resources that enable able them to “leapfrog” city centers and settle immediately into wealthier suburban communities. Over time, chain migration has transformed several sleepy, Anglo suburbs into vibrant, multi-ethnic communities, where at least one ethnic group comprises a demographic majority. In these dynamic “ethnoburbs” the majority ethnic community’s demographic concentration can enable it to influence local electoral politics. At times, this influence comes in the form of making claims and reallocating city resources on behalf of the community. But, increasingly, the community’s influence involves co-ethnic community members (many who are themselves first-generation immigrants) running campaigns and obtaining political office as mayors, city councilmembers, and school board members. The activities of these agents invert many social scientific assumptions about when immigrant political incorporation takes place. While scholars typically assumed political incorporation followed legal and social incorporation, ethnopolitical entrepreneurs run campaigns (often in the native language of their co-ethnic constituents) that incorporate newcomers before they have acquired the English language and these campaigns begin before many have obtained citizenship. These relatively novel municipal agents therefore influence how many newcomers and pre-existing…

▼ This dissertation redefines the role of damage in narratives about travelers, poetic tropes about traveling body parts, and even the traveling “bodies” of medieval manuscripts by examining the relationship between travel and physical hardship central to medieval travel narratives and the concept of travel in the medieval vernacular. Recasting damage as a productive force in the travel experience highlights its ability to disrupt the normalizing impulses of cultures that privilege able-bodiedness and opens up new conceptions of travel that do not depend on bodily wholeness to develop characters, significance, or storylines in travel literature. This study employs a disability studies approach coupled with theories of incorporation and materiality to interrogate the traveling body’s ability to disrupt its own movement in ways that augment rather than impede narrative development. This approach lends a new cultural agency to texts as disparate as the legends of the dog-headed Saint Christopher, works by Dante and Chaucer that employ the trope of the traveling heart, and medieval mystery plays that construct simulated pilgrimages for their audiences.

▼ This dissertation investigates a critical paradox of contemporary U.S. immigration policy. On one hand, undocumented immigrants are legally excludable from the state, blocked from formal economic integration, and socially stigmatized. Yet they also have rights such as access to K-12 education for undocumented children. How do undocumented young adults experience this incomplete inclusion and what does it mean for their integration? What impacts does legal status have on their educational outcomes and social network formation? What tactics do they employ as they struggle for more formal inclusion? I seek to answer these questions in three empirical chapters. The first two empirical chapters draw principally from in-depth interviews with undocumented young adults in Los Angeles, as well as two samples of the 2011-12 California Young Adult Study: a random sample of 1.5-generation and second generation Latinos, and a listed sample of participants of immigrant student organizations. The final empirical chapter analyzes 125 anti-deportation campaigns led by national undocumented youth organizations.Chapter two examines the educational impacts of legal status on young adults. Regression analysis reveals that undocumented youth face a penalty in educational outcomes, compared to their citizen peers, even after controlling for socioeconomic background and high school tracking. However, other non-citizen youth also face educational disadvantage, suggesting both undocumented disadvantage and citizenship advantage. Chapter three argues that the everyday experience of "illegality" comes to structure the social network formation and comfort in accessing school-based resources early in adolescence, even for members of immigrant rights organizations. However, I also find that the presence of other undocumented youth in the extended social network becomes a critical resource for navigating formal exclusion. Chapter four explores how some undocumented youth have resisted exclusion in much more public ways. I show how immigrant youth organizations advocate for young adults in deportation proceedings by deploying ideologies of citizenship that emphasize acculturation, civic engagement, and innocence. However, anti-deportation campaigns remain bounded by the government's priorities for deportation, emphasizing a version of citizenship that may ultimately exclude many other immigrants. Ultimately, I argue that existing assimilation theories, in their focus on social structures and shared group characteristics, do not fully account for the experiences of legal status at the individual level. I conclude that the incorporation of undocumented young adults remains incomplete, in ways that are enforced explicitly by laws and experienced by undocumented youth both directly and implicitly within schools and social networks. While some youth alter the course of their daily lives in order to avoid discovery, others find themselves making a claim against exclusion based on social citizenship, membership and belonging.
