▼ Parental involvement in low-income school communities in the Western Cape, South Africa, has received little attention irrespective of its significance to learner outcomes. This study explores parental involvement with regard to teachers' perceptions of parental involvement, as well as barriers and solutions to meaningful parental involvement in a low-income school community in the Western Cape. This study, in the form of a qualitative study, sought to establish how teachers perceived parental involvement, and what restricts parents with poor socio-economic backgrounds from becoming involving in their children's education. Additionally, the study sought to establish or develop ways in which parental involvement could be improved. This study adopted a qualitative method design using qualitative procedures such as semistructured interviews, focus group interviews, observation and an open-ended questionnaire. It emerged from the findings that teachers had limited understanding of parental involvement. They perceived parental involvement to be parent's school-based activities such as fund-raising and the provision of school materials for the learners. Most of the teachers were never exposed to training on how to involve parents. Teachers believed that lack of material resources and poor parental education contributed to the issue of a lack of parental involvement in the school. Furthermore, participant parents indicated that they are willing to become involved in their children's education; however, their involvement was restricted by various barrier factors such as poverty and a lack of enabling environment. Both (teachers and parents) participants also suggested programmes or useful ways in which parental involvement could be promoted, such as the provision of basic infrastructures, grant support, educational training or facilities and a supportive environment for the parents. The findings revealed that creating an enabling environment to nurture these parents' capabilities will improve parental involvement. The capability-approach framework was used not only to explain the restraining factors to parental involvement but also to propose or suggest ways or intervention measures to improve parental involvement in their children's education, especially the parents from the community of this research. The approach was use to analyse parental involvement with the view to develop parental involvement or parents' capabilities in the school community. ▼ This study aimed to develop a causal chain that illustrates the path through which a variety of factors influence consumer financial vulnerability. In order to achieve the stated aim, it was necessary to firstly identify the factors that gave rise to consumers being financially vulnerable. Secondly, the nature of the causal chain between the identified factors was determined. Thirdly, the causes of consumer financial vulnerability according to key informants in the financial services industry were determined. Finally, based on the results of the first three stages, possible explanations for consumer financial vulnerability were provided. Before the construction of the causal chain could be explored, a theoretical framework regarding household financial position as well as financial attitudes and behaviours was provided. The theoretical framework was supported by a description of the linkages through which consumers function and transact in an economy by applying chain reasoning. The chain reasoning was extended by providing financial statements reflecting the results of consumers’ interactions in the macroeconomy with an extract from the national accounts of South Africa presenting the income statements, balance sheets and relevant financial ratios of consumers for the period in which the research was conducted (2008 to 2009). For this study, the explanatory sequential mixed methods design was deemed appropriate to achieve the proposed research objectives. The research process firstly consisted of a quantitative strand where the possible causes for consumer financial vulnerability were identified after which the results were validated with data obtained in the second phase by means of four focus group discussions. To determine the factors giving rise to and establish the causal chain of overall consumer financial vulnerability, regression analysis was conducted. Based on the results of the regression analysis, it became evident that the financial vulnerability chain is not a singular linear process but rather a non-linear process (with contemporaneous and singular linkages) with a variety of factors influencing financial vulnerability, but also influencing each other over time. ▼ This dissertation introduces two essays with the focus on alternative approaches to empirical research in economics. The first essay uses a reduced-form approach to address a “macro-phenomenon:” the long-standing puzzle of China’s high household saving rate. The second essay employs a structural model to evaluate the social welfare of a procurement mechanism: the A+B auction. In the first essay, we study the role of income inequality interacting with liquidity constraints in explaining the high household saving rate in China. The predictions implied by a simple lifecycle heterogeneous agent model are consistent with data facts. Using three large nationally representative data sets, China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), and Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP), we find robust evidence that (1) the rich save more; (2) the poor are more likely to face liquidity constraints, and the effect of liquidity constraints on household saving rate is significantly positive; (3) income inequality has a significant positive effect on aggregate household saving rate; and (4) the marginal propensity to consume out of transitory income for poor households is significantly higher than for rich households. Our study provides a policy implication that economic policy of reducing income inequality would lower the aggregate saving rate and thus become a policy of economic transition and growth. In the second essay, we investigate an innovative and widely used contracting mechanism, the A+B auction, in highway procurement projects. We introduce a structural model with time incentives/disincentives and construction uncertainties under which contractors’ actual working days may deviate from the bidding days in the construction phase. This may make the A+B mechanism neither ex-ante nor ex-post efficient. We demonstrate that the model primitives including the contractor’s cost function, distribution of private types, and incentive/disincentive parameters are all nonparametrically identified. Using the data from highway procurement auctions in California, we provide strong empirical evidence that considering the existence of uncertainty in the structural analysis would lead to a significant efficiency loss. On average, the ex-ante (ex-post) welfare loss is 38% (37%) of the contract value. Counterfactual time incentive contracts under A design would decrease the ex-ante (ex-post) total costs by 26% (36%) of the contract value, with an average reduction of 2.6 million (3.7 million). Objective: The study will identify where conflicts between SMEs and the Annual ReportsAct exists to find out if there is a need for adaptation of Swedish accounting to achieveinternational comparability. Method: A descriptive method was used to make the regulations in IFRS for SMEs and ÅRLequivalent and to observe the differences between the regulations a comparative method wasused. After this the conflicts could be sorted out with the help of the former so called “IASinvestigation”.The conflicts and differences then were categorized into the approach theyrelated to, with Frame of reference: The frame for the study is recognition and valuation for collecting andanalysing the data. The approaches are presented for the balance sheet and income statementapproaches as they form the basis for analysis. Annual Reports Act, the EG-directives and theK3-projects are described as they have a central role in the background to the study andfurther understanding of the data. “IAS- utredningen” is described in order to distinguishconflicts from differences that do not entail conflicts. Finally, the harmonization process ispresented for its central role in the study. Data: Data in the study reflect areas in which the differences in the regulations are reflected. Results: The study has concluded that there are several differences between the regulations,both in recognition and valuation. In general most differences in valuation have resulted inconflicts that have been linked to either the balance sheet approach or the income statementapproach. As for recognition, half of the differences consisted of those that led to conflictsand the other half that not has led to such conflicts. The connection to the approaches has notbeen clear in these areas even if they could be seen. SMEs have shown a clear move towardsthe balance sheet approach, primarily for valuation. In this case conflicts need to be addressedat a higher level. On the contrary Annual Reports Act is advocating the income approach to alarger extent for the same conflicts. The regulations will not be able to operate with oneanother without adjustments. The K3-project will be the place for these adjustments.

Bakgrund och problemdiskussion: Inom intäktsredovisning råder det en problematik om när en intäkt ska redovisas samt till vilket belopp. Den 1 januari 2018 träder den nya intäktsredovisningsstandarden IFRS 15 i kraft och ersätter alla tidigare standarder som behandlade intäkter. IFRS 15 har ett fokus mot ett balansorienterat synsätt gentemot de tidigare standarderna som hade ett fokus mot ett resultaträkningsorienterat synsätt. Syfte: Denna studie ämnar sig åt att ge en överblick kring den omfattning bolag påverkas av IFRS 15. Syftet med studien är även att undersöka de berörda bolagens intäktsströmmar för att ge en förklaring till varför vissa intäktsströmmar påverkas samt inte påverkas. Metod: Studien har utgått från ett kvantitativt tillvägagångssätt där vi har samlat in empiriska data från börsnoterade bolags finansiella rapporter. Även bolagens analyser kring IFRS 15 betraktades för att kunna analysera intäktsströmmarna. I studien har vi använt oss utav variablerna nettoomsättning, bruttomarginal och rörelsemarginal för att mäta effekterna av IFRS 15. Resultat: Studiens resultat visade att majoriteten av bolagen inte kommer att få en kvantifierbar påverkan av IFRS 15. Endast en liten del av populationen i studien fick en kvantifierbar påverkan av IFRS 15. En stor del av populationen hamnade i bortfall eftersom de inte har hunnit analysera effekterna av IFRS 15.

Background and problem discussion: In revenue recognition, there’s a big problem about when a revenue should be recognised and to what amount. The new revenue recognition standard enters into force 1 january 2018 and supersedes all the previous standards that treated revenue. IFRS 15 focuses on a balance-sheet oriented approach compared to the previous standards that focused on an income-statement approach. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute an overview on how companies are affected by IFRS 15. This study also aims to investigate the revenue streams of the companies concerned by IFRS 15 by explaining why a certain revenue streams are affected and not affected. Method: The study is based on a quantitative approach where we collected empirical data from publicly traded companies’ financial reports. We also collected the companies’ analysis of IFRS 15 to analyze the revenue streams. In the study, we used the variables net sales, gross margin and operating margin to measure the effects of IFRS 15. Result: The study’s results showed that most the companies wouldn’t have a quantifiable impact by IFRS 15. Only a small portion of the population in the study received a quantifiable impact by IFRS 15. A large proportion of the population were classified as statistical loss since they haven’t started to analyze the effects yet.

▼ Metsäkiinteistön markkina-arvon selvittäminen tulee tarpeeseen useassa tilanteessa osto- tai myyntitapahtuman lisäksi. Suomessa käytetyimmät metsän arvonmääritysmenetelmät ovat summa-arvomenetelmä, tuottoarvomenetelmä (tai metsätaloudellinen tuottoarvomenetelmä) ja kauppa-arvomenetelmä. Käytettävissä olevien arvonmääritysmenetelmien standardeista vastaa Kansainvälinen arviointistandardointikomitea (International Valuation Standards Council, IVSC). Komitea julkaisee standardeja, jotka on myös Suomessa otettu kiinteistöarvioinnin lähtökohdaksi. Metsäkiinteistön arvonmääritykseen standardia ei kuitenkaan ole, koska kaikissa käytetyissä menetelmissä on merkittäviä ongelmakohtia. Kansainvälisten arviointistandardien näkökulmasta arvioinnin tavoitteena on aina markkinaperusteisen menetelmän käyttäminen. Laskelmissa käytettävät parametrit tulisi johtaa markkinoilta, mutta metsän osalta ongelmakohtana on ollut se, että puustotietojen hankkiminen erikseen on ollut liian kallista ja työlästä. Suomen metsäkeskuksen uuden lentolaserkeilaukseen pohjautuvan metsävaratietojärjestelmän johdosta Maanmittauslaitoksen kauppahintatiedon ja metsätilojen metsävaratiedon yhdistäminen tulee entistä helpommaksi. Tämä mahdollistanee arvonmääritysmenetelmien tarkemman tutkimisen ja siten menetelmän saattamisen standardien piiriin. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli vertailla käytetyimpien metsän arvonmääritysmenetelmien ominaisuuksia ja soveltuvuutta metsän markkina-arvon määrittämiseen. Tutkimusaineisto käsitti 15 edustavaa yli 10 hehtaarin metsätilakauppaa Keski-Suomen alueelta ja tilojen laserkeilaukseen pohjautuvan metsävaratiedon. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin summa-arvomenetelmän kokonaisarvon korjauksen suuruutta, metsätaloudellisen tuottoarvomenetelmän sisäinen korkokanta, hakkuumahdon osuus kauppahinnoista ja tila-arvioiden tarkkuus eri menetelmillä. Lisäksi tarkasteluun otettiin puun myyntitulojen verotuksen ja varainsiirtoveron, metsien hallintokulujen ja kaupankäynnin kulujen vaikutus arvonmäärityksen tuloksiin. Aineiston käsittely ja laskelmat tehtiin käyttäen MELA, Motti, Tforest- ja Excel -ohjelmia. Metsätaloudellisen tuottoarvomenetelmän kauppahintaan johtava sisäinen korkokanta oli keskimäärin noin 5,2 prosenttia ja mediaaniltaan noin 4,3 prosenttia, mikä vastaa aiempien tutkimusten mukaista tasoa metsän arvonlaskennan korkotasoista. Metsä luetaan keskimääräisen tuoton ja riskin sijoitusluokkaan. Summa-arvomenetelmän kokonaisarvon korjaus vaihteli aiempien tutkimusten mukaisesti noin -2 ja -60 prosentin välillä ja oli keskimäärin -26 prosenttia ja -13 prosenttia ilman summa-arvomenetelmään kuuluvia puuston odotusarvolisiä. Koko aineiston osalta hakkuumahdon mukaan 64 prosenttia kauppahinnoista oli katettavissa seuraavan viisivuotiskauden aikana, joskin vaihtelua tilakohtaisesti oli huomattavasti. Kun arvonmääritysmenetelmissä otetaan huomioon verot, metsien hallintokulut ja kaupankäynnin kustannukset, asettuu sisäinen korkokanta alemmalle tasolle noin 3 - 4 prosentin välimaastoon. A desigualdade na distribuição do rendimento tem sido um tema muito debatido nos últimos tempos e especialmente, após a crise económica iniciada em 2007-2008 que é muitas vezes relacionada com o aumento da desigualdade. Com o evoluir da teoria económica assistiu-se a um relativo abandono do tema da distribuição. Para os clássicos a distribuição do excedente era um tema fundamental, com impacto tanto no bem-estar dos indivíduos como na sustentabilidade económica e social. Com a crescente matematização da economia, a distribuição é analisada como uma questão técnica, definida em termos de curvas da oferta e procura. Além disso, assistiu-se a uma mudança de paradigma, em que a economia deixou de ser a ciência do excedente e da sua produção e distribuição, para se tornar uma ciência centrada na escassez. Neste contexto em que a distribuição é negligenciada do ponto de vista da teoria económica, o retorno do tema da desigualdade à discussão económica foca essencialmente a sua mensuração empírica, tendo sido desenvolvidos diversos índices sintéticos. No entanto, autores como Sraffa e Sen, são apontados como responsáveis por um renascimento da economia política clássica, onde a distribuição é um tema essencial. Além disso, Sen considera uma abordagem multidimensional da desigualdade, considerando que esta não deve ser medida apenas em termos de rendimento, mas sim ao nível das potencialidades.

Inequality in income distribution is a theme which has been much debated recently, especially after the economic crisis started in 2007-2008, which is often connected to an increase in inequality. As economic theory evolved, there was a relative neglect of the theme of distribution. For the classics the distribution of the surplus was a fundamental theme, with impact not only on individual well-being, but also on economic and social sustainability. With the increasing mathematization of economics, distribution is studied as a technical question. Furthermore, there has been a paradigm shift, in which economics became no longer the science which studies the production and distribution of the surplus, but rather a science centered on scarcity. In this context, in which distribution is neglected from the point of view of economic theory, the return of the theme of inequality to economic discussion focuses essentially on its empirical measurement, through various synthetic indexes that have been developed. However, authors like Sraffa and Sen are seen as the originators of a revival of classical political economy, where distribution is an essential theme. Besides, Sen considers a multidimensional approach to inequality, considering that the latter cannot be measured only in terms of income, but also in terms of capabilities.

▼ Despite the contribution that agriculture makes to the Indonesian Gross Domestic Product, the income of small subsistence farmers continues to fall. While many development activities and policies have been implemented to reduce the gap in income between farmers and non-farmers, the situation remains unchanged. In part this is because the majority of research has focused on improving production rather than addressing the social and economic aspects of farming and its supply chains. Very few approaches have adopted a holistic systems approach. This study examines holistically the agri-food supply chains of dryland farmers of Lombok, in eastern Indonesia, using a pluralistic approach. The objective of this study was to investigate the utility of developing a pluralistic model which combined the benefits of SSM with hard systems approaches like statistical and technical efficiency analyses and test this approach on the agri-food supply chains of dryland farmers of Lombok, in eastern Indonesia.Agribusiness is a complex social system both to understand and to manage but is also driven heavily by the need to produce efficiently for a market. This means that solving problems within such systems requires the melding of both the qualitative and quantitative aspects in a pluralistic way. The research presented here combines an interpretative research approach the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) with hard systems tools like descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, and technical efficiency analysis.The SSM analysis was successful in identifying a feasible pathway for change for the agri-food supply chains studied. The key benefits of adopting this approach was its ability to produce realistic and feasible solutions in a culturally acceptable way and to unconsciously help the supply chain members to understand, look at, think, analyse and solve their problems through collaborative action. It is however, a complex tool to use and there is a need to develop a simplified SSM approach which significantly reduces the sophisticated systems jargon and technical terms that have been developed by the SSM research community if it is to be adopted more widely for use in solving agri-food supply chain problems in developing countries.The farm productivity analysis found significant variations in the technical efficiency of the farms analyzed; from 47.6 to 94.5 per cent, indicating that there is still significant opportunity for improvements in production practices. Age and education were found to significantly affect farm-specific technical efficiency suggesting that programs that educated the rural young generally, but more specifically in new innovations and farm management practices, would show production efficiency benefits.An analysis of the marketing system revealed that a number of market intermediaries were involved in the marketing and distribution of agricultural commodities. This research analyses the structure of the consumption pattern in the European Union and examines the convergence hypothesis in the members - states. Based on a fifteen year study period (1993 – 2007) and on a separate analysis for five groups of countries (EU (27), EE (15), Eurozone, the Mediterranean countries, new members-states of the E.U.) the influence of 30 macroeconomic, social and demographic factors has been captured in the convergence process of the twelve product categories that compose the consumption pattern. The theoretical analysis shows the constituent elements of two approaches in the context of consumption convergence: the "genetic” and the "acquired". The empirical assessment is based on six indicators and three econometric models for each group of countries and product categories. The central point of this research is to highlight the influence of the control variables under the convergence process of the consumption pattern. The time period is split in two sub-periods (1993-1999 and 2000-2007) for the examination of the convergence differentiation level, through the use of an appropriate dummy variable. The relevant estimates show that the consumption pattern has converged at least in the majority of the goods, but its intensity has depended on the time period, the group of countries and the category of goods. This convergence process was significantly more pronounced in the first time period (1993-1999), while in the second period (2000-2007) this phenomenon showed signs of weakening, which is probably due to the fact that much of the consumer pattern variation has been corrected during the first period. The convergence was clearly more pronounced in the new members - states and less in the eurozone and the EU (15), while it was more common in the “cohabitation” goods and less in the “living” goods. In this framework the effect of the endogenous parameters (income, household characteristics) has accredited a special role to the "genetic approach" to convergence.

Η παρούσα έρευνα μελετά την εξέλιξη του καταναλωτικού προτύπου στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, υπό το πρίσμα του ελέγχου της υπόθεσης περί σύγκλισης του προτύπου αυτού στα κράτη – μέλη της Ένωσης. Με περίοδο μελέτης τη δεκαπενταετία 1993 – 2007 και διαχωρισμό της ανάλυσης σε πέντε ομάδες χωρών (Ε.Ε. (27), Ε.Ε. (15), ευρωζώνη, μεσογειακές χώρες, νέα μέλη της ένωσης) αποτυπώνεται η επιρροή 30 μακροοικονομικών, κοινωνικών, και δημογραφικών παραγόντων στη διαδικασία σύγκλισης των δώδεκα κατηγοριών προϊόντων που συνθέτουν το καταναλωτικό πρότυπο. It is beyond any doubt that unemployment is the most crucial economic problem over the last decades; its persistently high levels and consistency with harmful side effects, i.e. income inequality and stagnation of economic activity, raise questions about the correctness of current policy suggestions. Nowadays the dominance of NAIRU framework as the most appropriate policy guidepost by means of inverse relation between inflation and growth levels, sets inflation targeting as a first priority and unemployment as a structural factor. In addition, the concentration on labour market institutions and policies is supposed to create a friendly environment for employment and price stability. However, the ad hoc equality between NAIRU and actual unemployment as well as with full employment and capacity utilization levels in conjunction with its assumed consistency with passive aggregate demand imposes constraints against the solution of unemployment and causes additional problems. Considering the inappropriateness of supply side approach in limiting unemployment, the current thesis is an action taken in order to confirm the significance of demand side in preventing economies from being pushed into a vicious circle of continuous recessions. Thus, by setting the magnitude of unemployment at the centre of analysis, this thesis has a fourfold aim: firstly, the presentation of the developments of theoretical macroeconomic foundations and economic thought that are closely related with unemployment until the currently dominant framework of NAIRU; secondly, to evaluate the use of this framework as an appropriate policy guidepost and the degree of its accuracy for making policy decisions. Third, it aims at setting the fundamental characteristics of post Keynesian-Kaleckian economics, so as to examine through a demand-led approach the relation of monetary factors (debt and interest rate) with unemployment (directly) and income distribution (indirectly) as well as the possible changes that may arise in the view of income taxation; and last but not least to develop a macroeconomic model and provide econometric evidences about the most of core economies of European Monetary Union. Bearing in mind the implications of both the theoretical model and the empirical analysis, it is ensured the agreement that mass unemployment stems from deficient demand levels and inequitable income distribution. As a consequence, the adoption of a policy agenda that would suggest the stimulation of investment alongside with expenditures (public and mainly private) is recommended so that real growth to be obtained. Further, the introduction of progressive income taxation, interest rate and income distribution policies seems to be reasonable for realising economic activity from external finance and refreshing it via new investment and consumption expenditures. In these conditions, unemployment would be limited while the presence of excess capacity and plenty of unused capital would not hold economic activity down by harmful inflationary pressures.

▼ Cette thèse porte sur l’introduction des politiques de transfert de revenu au Brésil. L’objectif central de la recherche est de comprendre comment ces politiques se sont imposées dans le cadre des réformes de la protection sociale brésilienne pendant les années 1990, notamment à partir de 1995 et comment elles ont engendré un changement paradigmatique de troisième ordre de la politique nationale d’assistance sociale. Nous posons deux hypothèses de recherche : la première est que l’introduction de telles politiques au Brésil fut le résultat du rôle historique des intellectuels engagés dans la défense du revenu minimum en tant qu’alternative au modèle de protection sociale brésilien. Cette défense du revenu minimum fut soutenue par des intellectuels, des communautés épistémiques et par des politiciens qui ont inscrit le débat sur le revenu minimum à l’agenda politique brésilien. La deuxième hypothèse suggère que la convergence d’idées, d’institutions et d’intérêts a favorisé l’adoption de ces politiques. Cette convergence d’idées, d’institutions et d’intérêts repose sur le rôle de plusieurs acteurs tels les intellectuels, le président Cardoso et d’autres politiciens qui se sont mis à la défense du social au Brésil depuis 1999, des institutions parlementaires brésiliennes et des organisations internationales, notamment le FMI, la Banque mondiale et la Banque interaméricaine de développement – BID. Nous proposons l’approche des trois i pour rendre compte de ce changement. L’apprentissage social, les processus de diffusion et de lesson-drawing sont les facteurs à l’origine de la formation de la convergence autour des programmes de transfert de revenu. Nous montrerons que l’expérience brésilienne de programmes de transfert de revenu a non seulement engendré un processus d’apprentissage social renversé auprès de la Banque Mondiale mais qu'elle a aussi eu un effet aussi sur les actions de la BID. Nous suggérons que le changement paradigmatique de la protection sociale brésilienne a été amorcé par le gouvernement Cardoso dans un processus d’essais et d’erreurs. Ce processus, qui est à l’origine des réaménagements du programme « Comunidade Solidária », a permis la création du « Projeto Alvorada » et du « Réseau de protection sociale » en 2001. Les programmes de transfert de revenu reliés à l’éducation et aux soins de santé ont été les plus influents dans la construction du consensus qui s’est établi autour des programmes de transfert de revenu comme alternative à l’ancien modèle de protection sociale puisqu’ils procurent le renforcement du capital social en même temps qu’ils fonctionnent comme facteur structurant de la protection sociale. Ce legs du gouvernement Cardoso a permis au gouvernement de Luis Inácio Lula da Silva de consolider le nouveau paradigme avec la création du programme national Bolsa-Família. Le gouvernement Lula a donc bénéficié de l’héritage historique des deux mandats de Cardoso et, ironiquement, a récolté les fruits de l’apprentissage social. ▼ Taking child poverty into account as an enormous concern on the pathway to human development, the present dissertation aims to examine child poverty’s extent and characteristics, poor children’s views on this issue and their policy recommendation to reduce it. The research questions are: 1) what are the extent and characteristics of child poverty in Bangladesh? 2) What is child poverty? Why and how do children experience it? 3 (a) To what extent and in what respect does child poverty differ between Bangladesh and China? 3 (b) What are the reasons for the differences in child poverty over time between the two countries? 4 ) What is needed to reduce child poverty in Bangladesh according to its principal victims? The present dissertation is based on research mainly with young children aged up to 14 years. A combination of quantitative and qualitative studies’ inclusion is a strength of this dissertation, which further offers to look at child poverty from different perspectives. For quantitative studies (Chapter 5 and Chapter 7), the empirical materials consist of microdata from: a) Bangladesh HIES for the years 1995 and 2000; b) Chinese data from China Household Income Project (CHIP) of the years 1988, 1995, and 2002. For qualitative studies (Chapter 6 and Chapter 8), data from five focus group discussions––conducted during 2005 and 2006 with 30 participants––are used. The methods for data analysis in quantitative studies are: i) descriptive and multivariate analysis; ii) decomposition framework. A grounded theory approach is applied to analyse the data for qualitative studies. Nine chapters constitute this dissertation. Chapters 1 to 4––based on secondary data–– introduce background information, theoretical discussion, methodological issues and overviews of forthcoming chapters. Chapters 5-8 contain four empirical studies. The conclusion draws some broad inferences in Chapter 9. The dissertation mainly finds that Bangladesh’s children make up the greater share of the population where almost half of the poor are children; child poverty rates are––similar to China’s–– higher than the adults’ and more extensive than in China (Chapter 5 and Chapter 7). Child poverty plays a vital role in the prolongation of developing, expanding, extending and transmitting poverty on to successive generations; three different interlinked stages––encompassing multidimensionality, spending life in distress, and having intergenerational and gendered dimension––are disclosed in this progression (Chapter 6). Additionally, the effectiveness of growth and income inequality do affect––but not always–– child poverty differences across time and countries. Other demographic factors are revealed to play vital roles (Chapter 7). Household head’s education demonstrates strong negative association with child poverty (chapters 5-8). ▼ Poslovne banke se v zadnjem obdobju vse pogosteje soočajo s tematiko ocenjevanja vrednosti blagovnih znamk. Posamezna podjetja, ki imajo v lasti blagovno znamko, so zaradi potreb po pridobivanju dolžniškega kapitala pripravljena v zavarovanje (v zameno pridobitve bančnega kredita) ponuditi tudi lastno blagovno znamko. Ob tako zasnovanem poslu je pomembno opredeliti predvsem tržno vrednost blagovne znamke, ki je predmet zastave, in to predvsem, kadar vrednost blagovne znamke primerjamo s tržno vrednostjo lastniškega kapitala podjetja, ki je lastnik blagovne znamke. Zraven ocene vrednosti blagovne znamke je pogosto potrebno pristopiti k ugotovitvi ocenjene tržne vrednosti lastniškega kapitala podjetja. Še posebej v primerih, kadar gre za podjetja, ki niso uvrščena v reprezentativno borzno kotacijo. Pomembno je opredeliti predvsem korelacijo med vrednostjo blagovne znamke in vrednostjo podjetja, saj je vrednost podjetja med drugim povezana tudi z vrednostjo njegove blagovne znamke. V raziskovalnem delu smo pristopili k oceni tržne vrednosti podjetja, nato pa še k oceni tržne vrednosti njegove blagovne znamke. Ob tem smo pri obeh ocenah vrednosti uporabili na donosu zasnovan način, vendar znotraj slednjega različne metode ocenjevanja vrednosti. Opozorili smo na diferenciacije med metodami ocenjevanja vrednosti podjetij in metodami ocenjevanja vrednosti blagovnih znamk. Pri ocenjevanju vrednosti podjetja smo uporabili metodo diskontiranega denarnega toka, pri ocenjevanju vrednosti blagovne znamke pa metodo presežnega donosa in metodo oprostitve licenčnine. Na podlagi raziskovalne naloge smo ugotovili, da je lahko implicitno razmerje med vrednostjo blagovne znamke in vrednostjo lastniškega kapitala podjetja relativno visoko. Delež prispevka blagovne znamke k tržni kapitalizaciji podjetja lahko presega 50 % oz. povedano drugače, blagovna znamka lahko kreira več kot 50 % tržne kapitalizacije podjetja. Glede na naše ugotovitve je lahko blagovna znamka ključnega pomena pri (so)ustvarjanju tržne kapitalizacije podjetja. Tako pri ocenjevanju vrednosti blagovnih znamk kot pri ocenjevanju vrednosti podjetij se lahko uporabljajo vsi teoretični pristopi ocenjevanja vrednosti. Vendar smo v raziskovalnem delu prišli do dognanja, da je pri ocenjevanju vrednosti blagovnih znamk najprimernejši pristop na donosu zasnovan način. To potrjujejo številni ugledni profesorji in avtorji teoretičnih konceptov, kot tudi sama stroka ocenjevanja. Način tržnih primerjav je v praksi težko aplicirati. Pogosto gre za transakcije, ki obsegajo celoto določenega poslovnega premoženja, kar pa presega predmet v obliki blagovne znamke. V kolikor gre eksplicitno za transakcijo blagovne znamke, pa najpogosteje informacije o realiziranih transakcijah niso javno razpoložljive. Tudi nabavnovrednostni (stroškovni) način se v praksi smatra za manj uporabnega. Slednji se navezuje predvsem na zgodovinske podatke, element prihodnosti pa popolnoma izključuje.
