▼ Home-education, school-education and recent technology revolution are intertwined in shaping children’s identity in the context of body movement and body-schema. Moreover, the notion of imagination in physical education emphasizes one’s “body image” and “body schema,” and is represented in a nature of object (i.e. body movement) and fantasized as the corporeal postural model of the body in one’s Utopian visions instead of reality action. As Sepper (1996) points out, “[i]magination by its nature has as object that is not really ‘there,’ and in dreams and hallucinations, it takes appearances for reality” (p. 1). The imaginational context of body movement, as a social phenomenon, varies from culture to culture, from traditional to modern/postmodern society, from a local village to a global world, and from actual to virtual reality. The purpose of study was to investigate how young children, specifically in third/fourth grade children, from different ethnic groups and cultural environments construct and present their body-schema in contemporary physical education classroom. Four major ethnic populations were focused upon: Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic-American, and Asian-American. Twenty-two third and fourth graders (8 males and 14 females) from Yaya Elementary School, Georgia, the United States and Cathay Elementary School, Taipei, Taiwan participated in the study. The methods of data collection included: 1) informal and formal interviews; 2) non-participated observation; and 3) document analysis. Data were analyzed by constant comparative method to achieve a better understanding of children’s body-schema construction according to their various family and cultural backgrounds so as to increase school teacher’s awareness of their different body movements and to help develop culturally responsive educational curriculum in elementary physical education. Four major themes were revealed in the study: a) father-image/mother-image and sibling-image/PE teacher-image; b) gender and sports; c) technology, body-image and the imaginary; and d) mapping cultural images. Results indicated children’s imagination in body-schema/body-image was found to be largely governed by both cultural and social elements. Consequently, youth identity formation has been transformed in a multicultural/global environment where social and cultural conditions had been drastically changed. ▼ The purpose of this investigation was to duplicate the methodology of the Pitcher and Prelinger (1963) study, using their theoretical framework and category system, to examine the cultural impact upon the development of a group of socioeconomically disadvantaged preschool children as reflected in their fantasy products, specifically in their spontaneously told stories. The results for this disadvantaged group were analyzed separately, and were compared, where possible, with the Pitcher and Prelinger data on a socioeconomically privileged group of children. The general assumption underlying the hypotheses is that experiences due to cultural impact will be differentially expressed in the fantasy products of two socioeconomically different groups of children and will be reflected in their spontaneously told stories. The three null hypotheses formulated to test for differences within the less privileged group were: formal aspects of the stories, which presumably represent the child's ego structure, do not differ for boys and girls of the two age groups; story contents, which presumably represent the range of experience stored in the child, are independent of age, sex, and number of parents; and, the predominant psychosocial issue in the stories do not differ for boys and girls of the two age groups. The hypotheses formulated for comparison of the two different socioeconomic groups were: formal story aspects and psychosocial modalities do not differ for privilege group; and, story contents are independent of privilege group. The data (60 stories) were collected by the investigator using Jung's "free association" method and were rated by three judges using the Pitcher and Prelinger category system. Satisfactory interjudge reliability agreement was established on the ratings. Analysis of variance and the x² test of independence were used to analyze the data for tests within the less privileged group; whereas, analysis for the comparison of the two groups, with the exception of one modified x² test, had to be carried out on the basis of inspection alone due to the particular manner in which Pitcher and Prelinger reported their data. Stories were collected from 30 socioeconomically disadvantaged three- and four-year-old children enrolled in a United-Fund-supported day nursery in Portland, Oregon in the summer of 1964. The subjects, designated as socioeconomically disadvantaged (or less privileged) children were from families for whom the median annual take-home income is $3234.00; 53% of the sample were from single-parent families and 47% were from two-parent families; and, 21% of the parents had college or graduate education while 79% had high school education. The socioeconomically privileged subjects of the Pitcher and Prelinger study were from two-parent families of professional people, attended exclusive private nursery schools, and 60% of them showed superior capacity on intelligence tests. La Galatée et le Persiles de Cervantès ont fréquemment suscité des difficultés d’interprétation car ils n’établissent pas le même rapport avec la réalité que les ouvrages situés au centre de la création cervantine : en effet, ils explorent des espaces imaginaires frôlant parfois l’invraisemblance et s’éloignent, ce faisant, de ce qui nous semble être le fondement du roman moderne. C’est donc à partir de ce premier constat que le présent travail s’est progressivement construit cherchant à comprendre les raisons de ces particularités décelables dans les oeuvres liminaires d’un auteur dont l’« ingenio » a si souvent été loué. Aussi s’agira-t-il de déceler des similitudes entre ces deux romans, mais surtout de les replacer dans leur contexte d’écriture : l’imagination et l’imaginaire constitueront les fils directeurs de cette étude qui tentera de montrer la capacité de ces ouvrages à répondre aux attentes d’un lectorat et des théoriciens sans pour autant négliger l’entreprise consistant à élaborer une écriture libre et libérée : une écriture de l’imaginaire

La Galatea and Persiles, two romances written by Cervantes, are frequently misunderstood because they do not establish the same relation with reality as in Don Quixote. They explore an imaginary space and seem to work in contradiction with the rule of verisimilitude and what we consider to be the foundation of the modern novel. After this assessment, the present study has been elaborated in order to understand the reasons for these special features in Cervantes's first and last books, a writer whose “ingenio” has often been praised. That is why, for a start, I will focus on the similarities between them and, first and foremost, I will contextualise them: the imagination and the imaginary will be the guiding principles. This work tries to show how these books are able to meet the readership's and the theoreticians' expectations. At the same time they explore an imaginary space, proving that it is possible to invent a free writing

Cette recherche a voulu analyser l'écart entre la dimension littéraire de la page autobiographique et la réalité de l'expérience existentielle de l'auteur. On sait, en effet, qu'à partir d'un emploi fonctionnel et pertinent des éléments paratextuels, l'écrivain de la Vita construit une image héroïque et idéale de lui-même, en mettant en évidence plus ou moins de façon volontaire les aspects de sa personnalité hors du commun qui lui ont permis de s'autodéclarer Héros littéraire.Cette analyse ne reparcourira pas donc les nœuds fondamentaux autour desquels s'articule l'histoire de l'autobiographie comme genre littéraire du XVIIIe siècle, mais elle cherchera à rendre la véritable image de l'auteur, à partir des événements racontés dans la Vita. Dans ce but, on a entrelacé des approches de lecture différentes, bien que complémentaires, de l'autobiographie d'Alfieri qui justifient le sectionnement de cette thèse en trois parties: ) La “Vita » comme mémoire sélective; 2) Des silences autobiographiques et des nouvelles d'Alfieri; 3) La mémoire des choses

This research work wants to analyse the difference between the literary side of the author’s biography and his real existential experience.The first part of the research, “La Vita come memoria selettiva”, deals with the author’s workshop and wants to analyse the elaborative phases of the autobiographical text, supplied with manuscript 13 and 24.The first paragraph of the thesis, whose title is “Presenza e significato del paratesto nella Vita”, analyses the textual apparatus of the autobiography. The second paragraph, “Figure e Figuranti nella Vita”, analyses the characters,mentioned and unmentioned, in the autobiographic work. At the end, the third paragraph, “Francesco Elia, il servo che dirige il suo padrone. Aspetti della commedia settecentesca nella Vita”, concentrates on the study of the servant’s character.The second part, written in an innovative tone, wants to study the personality of Alfieri in depth.The last chapter, “La memoria delle cose”,concentrates on a series of objects of different importance in the author’s autobiography that is full of consonances and discordances between reality and imagination.

▼ La Condición del Ser. La Necesidad de Saber. Entre aquellas características esenciales que definen al ser humano, sin duda alguna, se encuentran el pensamiento racional y el lenguaje. Como cualidades inherentes al individuo, en su evolución se refleja la preocupación por conocer y definir cuál es la condición de su naturaleza como ser. El individuo no solo se percibe a sí mismo como un ser físico, sino también como un ser espiritual. A lo largo de la historia, este conocimiento de su ser, o auto-conocimiento, ha estado influenciado por la dualidad implícita en una percepción objetiva y subjetiva de la realidad. La realidad, entendida como la experiencia que el individuo tiene del mundo, no podría comprenderse tan solo como una experiencia objetiva a partir de los sentidos, sino también como un acercamiento subjetivo, en tanto en cuanto dicha experiencia se encuentra mediada por el pensamiento del individuo y, consecuentemente, por su interpretación interna del mundo. Se convierte en una experiencia que imbuye el pensamiento del individuo de un sentimiento de continuidad entre lo material y lo espiritual. La actitud contemplativa e introspectiva del místico junto con la expresión creativa del poeta en su visión interna del mundo serán instrumentos esenciales para el individuo en este proceso de autoconocimiento y de conciencia de sí mismo. Durante el Romanticismo en Europa y en la América del siglo XIX especialmente, la búsqueda de autoconocimiento en la percepción de afinidad entre lo sensual y lo espiritual jugaría un papel importante en el crecimiento intelectual, quedando así el conocimiento derivado de una experiencia mística integrado en el marco filosófico y poético que busca y expresa la evidencia de una continuidad entre mundo y pensamiento. Objetivos y Metodología. Breve Visión General de Conceptos. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo examinar los conceptos de la mística y de la imaginación en la poesía y en el discurso poético americanos de los siglos XIX y XX y su influencia significativa en el avance intelectual del individuo a través de un estudio en profundidad de una selección de trabajos poéticos y filosóficos realizados por Jones Very (1813 – 1880), Wallace Stevens (1879 – 1955) y Stanley Cavell (1926 – 2018). El discurso místico de la poesía en América, particularmente desde el enfoque introducido por el pensamiento romántico y transcendentalista, contribuyó de forma relevante a la creación de un camino hacia el autoconocimiento. La huella de elementos místicos (la meditación y la reflexión, la revelación y la intuición, herramientas clave para el desarrollo de dicho camino) junto con el importante papel del lenguaje y de la expresión se encuentra presente en las obras de muchos poetas y filósofos americanos de los siglos XIX y XX, y especialmente en los trabajos de Very, Stevens y Cavell. ▼ The study aims to validate Teacher Scientific Imagination Scale (TSIS) developed based on the Scientific Imagination Model (Cheng & Lin, 2013; Wang, Ho, & Cheng, 2013) and to further investigate scientific imagination among elementary and junior high school teachers in Taiwan. Participants were 1765 elementary and high school teachers recruited from Kaohsiung City and Pingtun City. The Teacher Scientific Imagination Scale (TSIS), two-dimensional Teacher Scientific Imagination Scale (2-dimensional TSIS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSS) and Runco Ideational Behavior Scale (RIBS) were administered to the participants. Multiple dimensional Rasch techniques, descriptive statistic, t test and one way MANOVA were applied to assess model-data fit, provide the validity evidence of the TSIS, and the possession and value of TSIS were aligned on the interval logit scale to yield four quadrants. The results indicated that TSIS exhibited good model-data fit and met the content of the Scientific Imagination Model. All items had no significantly differential item functioning between genders and the study also provided multiple sources of validity evidence for TSIS. The correlations among TSIS, GSS and RIBS were .21-.83. In this study, we also conducted a cross-analysis on the scientific imagination characteristics possessed by teachers and valued by teachers. The analyses revealed that in terms of personal traits, the qualities valued and possessed by teachers were âtrying hard to overcome barriersâ, âexploring knowledge of different fields, â eager to know whyâ, âmeticulous to detailsâ, âtrying something newâ, âfinding different uses for an objectâ, and âfully immersed in imagination and lost track of time flowâ. The characteristics which teachers rated important but still lacked were âobservant to oneâs surroundingsâ, âsparing no effortsâ, âseeking pleasure in oneâs workâ. In terms of mental imagery, the qualities which subjects valued and already owned included âgiving a sketchy outline for an objectâ and âimagining the shape of an object in detailsâ. On the other hand, the characteristic which teachers valued but needed to cultivate was âfinding links between irrelevant objectsâ. In terms of surroundings, conditions regarded as essential and existent by subjects included âinteracting with people from different disciplinesâ, âgaining travel experiencesâ, âparticipating activities in unfamiliar areasâ and â receiving support and resources from schoolsâ. The conditions which subjects valued but lacked were âopenness atmosphereâ and âparticipating science-related activitiesâ. In addition, there were no significant differences in teacher scientific imagination across gender and teachers instructing different subjects. However, there were significant differences in teacher scientific imagination with respect to their experiences of participating scientific competitions and of winning scientific competition awards. Suggestions for further development and application of the study were discussed. ▼ This thesis examines the role of readerly engagement in the allegorical poetry of Edmund Spenser and William Blake. An analysis of their poetry reveals important affinities between the two poets. Not only was Blake aware of Spenser’s work, he can be seen to incorporate and build upon Spenser’s self-conscious poetic style in order to engage readers in the active process of interpretation. Meaning in their poetry can be shown to unfold gradually by way of complex interactions between the reader and the text, interactions fostered by the reader’s imagination and the (differently) visual quality of the two poets’ works. Blake promotes this way of seeing as being “four-fold,” the ability to perceive on several dimensions. The first chapter of this thesis looks at the definitions and attitudes towards allegory from the early sixteenth century onwards, showing how the mode has been constantly redefined. Chapter two investigates the self-conscious nature of allegory through an analysis of the placement of words, metaphors, unconventional language, and the way the poems may be read by readers. Both poets encourage a heightened awareness of the process of reading which may be termed allegorical. Blake owned his own printing press allowing him greater control over the words and design of his text. This enabled him to be more forceful in his communication of images and ideas than Spenser. Chapter three focuses upon the multiple (and contradictory) ways in which the text may be interpreted by the reader. Allegory is a means of communicating and simultaneously disguising criticism. Both poets can be seen to use it to voice resistance to forms of authority, even as they encourage readers to recognise these meanings within their texts. Spenser and Blake had to combat different forms of censorship with differing strategies. Whereas Spenser felt compelled to uphold the status quo, Blake sought to deconstruct rigid social conventions. Chapter four explores the relation between allegory and the imagination. Spenser uses allegory to inspire the imagination, whereas for Blake the imagination encourages allegory. The imagination is a means of pushing readers towards further learning and a deeper appreciation of allegorical meaning. Chapter five analyses Spenser and Blake’s verbal and imagistic visuality in relation to allegory. Blake’s illustrations promote further reader engagement, while Spenser’s illuminations are a part of his metaphorical and allegorical text. Both poets use the visual to trigger imaginative readerly interaction and to promote new ways of perceiving and relating to their poems.

▼ This dissertation argues that encounters with the beauty of being stand at the heart of Chesterton's novels; through his characters' ability to imaginatively encounter the forms around them, Chesterton's fiction offers visions of both the splendor of being shining through phenomenal forms and the enraptured responses which attend such visions. The real literary achievement of Chesterton's novels lies in the transformation of characters through the imagination as it leads those characters to encounter both the particular forms of the world and the depths of being to which those forms are translucent. This reading of Chesterton's novels is grounded in von Balthasar's account of theological aesthetics and form. As his characters see anew the particular forms which surround them, they encounter the depths of being present within those forms. Von Balthasar's linking of being and form requires that an account of Chesterton's fiction must address the presence of beauty, a term not readily found in the existing criticism. If Chesterton's characters are repeatedly moved by the being revealed through particular forms, this encounter and response takes place under the aegis of the beautiful. Chapter one provides a general introduction to the project. Chapter two situates Chesterton's novels in the contexts of medieval aesthetics, nouvelle theologie, and modernist epiphany. Chapter three provides an account of the peculiar form of the novels especially with regard to characterization and time. Recognizing the place of beauty in the novels explains their episodic structure and fixity of character. Within these strange narrative structures, the imaginative encounter with beauty takes three distinct forms. Each of the final three chapters is dedicated to exploring one particular mode of imagination as it appears in Chesterton's novels. Thus, chapter four investigates the perceptive imagination as a tool for making the familiar strange in Manalive. Chapter five examines the imagination of limits in The Flying Inn and The Napoleon of Notting Hill. Finally, chapter six considers the empathetic imagination of Gabriel Gale in The Poet and the Lunatics and Sunday in The Man Who Was Thursday and the charity to which it leads those characters. ▼ This thesis is centred on the question of the effect security technologies, and the imaginaries associated with them, have on the formation of the present security doxa. With a more nuanced understanding of technology as process, and the role of imagination reintroduced into the nexus, this thesis aims to enable an understanding of how technological security solutions are deployed in everyday life and how this contributes to a reformulating of politics in a world gripped by anxiety about an uncertain future. Of primary interest is the way in which seemingly mundane technologies can enter the dominant security narrative and achieve deployment in everyday life, not only as the prime solution to concerns of risk, but as something to actively be desired in themselves. A vital and understudied arena for the dissemination of specific imaginaries of mundane security tools as the ultimate solution to a risky future – as an end in and of themselves – are the spaces of promotion for such technologies. The centrepiece of promotion is found at the trade fairs and exhibitions where one can witness the marketing and sale of the ‘latest and greatest’ tech fixes from an ever increasing range of private sector security entrepreneurs whose living is made from promoting security. By offering both a mapping of the wider expansion and logic of the security fair world, and an ethnographic study of interactions within the exhibition walls of the International Fire and Security Exhibition and Conference (IFSEC) over the course of three years, this thesis makes it possible to develop a better understanding of both the makeup and relations between these elements, and expose these gatherings as more than just sites of commerce and consumption, and much more than simply a metaphor for the wider security world. Instead, they can be thought of as hotspots of intensive exchange of knowledge, new ideas and network building. Thus, this thesis aims to demonstrate how international trade fairs and exhibitions are more than just an ever more important means of distributing security technologies. It is not a question of the relationship between visitors and exhibitors, or the particular effectiveness of marketing strategies deployed by individual firms. It is about the underpinning logic of a particular mind-set regarding what it means to consume security as a commodity, and a specific imagining of a secured future with such solutions as the ultimate end-in-themselves and how these spaces are pivotal in the dissemination, propagation and reformulation of changing attitudes towards security. ▼ The aim of this thesis is to develop an innovative theoretical understanding of technological innovation as a social phenomenon and to demonstrate the results of its application to the sector of UK's marine energy technology. Via a creative analysis and critique of various theoretical approaches to technology, I identify several key elements of a theory capable of understanding technological change, which I then develop based on the critical juxtaposition of the approaches of Pierre Bourdieu and Cornelius Castoriadis. Technological innovation is understood as the ultimate outcome of the relations of cooperation and competition formed by radically creative agents, capable of ex-nihilo creation, who participate in private and public institutions of a quasi-regulated technological field. After arguing in favour of applying a primarily subjectivist epistemology with objectivist elements, I present a research methodology based on semi-structured interviews. The results of the data analysis highlight several key features of technological change as it takes place within the technological field of UK's marine energy technology. Firstly, I present the ways the technological field influences the agents therein and helps them develop their craft. Secondly, I explore how the agents of the field use their craft as they create ex-nihilo. Thirdly I show the interactions between the technological field and other social institutions/spaces such as the economic sector and the general public. Subsequently, I analyse the internal organization of the technological field and its impact upon the trajectories that technological innovation follows therein. Finally, I make the first tentative steps towards developing policy advice for the sector. I conclude that, as long as policy makers manage to develop a precise understanding of the technological field of marine energy technology, then they actually can design policy capable of positioning the technological innovations therein within a preferred path.

▼ This thesis investigates how the prevalent tendency in scholarship on Mansfield diminishes and simplifies her treatment of intersubjectivity. Recurrently, critics analyse this theme by referring to the author’s own life; they invoke “facts” about – for instance – Mansfield’s emotional world in order to garner authority for their analyses. This tendency proves problematic when it can be shown that the texts harbour questions about intersubjectivity which are irreducible to such biographical thematisation. Indeed, the texts demand questions about the process of reading – its complexities and difficulties – rather than simply summoning some kind of biographical gloss from us. Invoking Mansfield’s life, some of her most respected critics would claim that she portrays intersubjectivity in two ways: she affirms it in her New Zealand stories and denies it in her European ones. In representing New Zealand, she could recall the ostensibly peaceable world of her childhood; in representing Europe, she had to confront the conflict which seems to have been rampant in her adult sphere. To supplement this development, critics such as Ian Gordon and Antony Alpers uphold the New Zealand stories as being more “authentic” in their portrayal of interpersonal relations. The challenge to this tradition from politically-minded readers of Mansfield has not been definitive. While it sometimes redresses the neglect of her European stories, and suggests that alienation is also visible in the New Zealand setting, it shares the investment of earlier critics in Mansfield’s life. Mansfield’s subjectivity – or some hypothetical reconstruction of it – remains the pivot on which most readings of her fiction turn. Questions about our access to that subjectivity, and the ethical implications of our attempts to access it, are silently or defensively elided. I argue that Mansfield’s representation of intersubjectivity eludes the facile dichotomy of the New Zealand/European stories in a way that is more complex than the simple use of the word “alienation” implies. As part of its revisionary agenda, this thesis displaces the New Zealand stories to which critics so frequently gravitate by instead focussing on Mansfield’s most neglected texts. I read these texts with the intensity that critics customarily reserve for “masterpieces” such as “At the Bay” in order to prove the probing exploration of intersubjectivity which lies within these ostensibly “slight” works. Stories such as “Poison” point to a fundamental problem in the relations between its characters: neither language nor behaviour can afford interpersonal understanding. Instead it is the opacity of the other which is omnipresent when some kind of rapport or communion is sought. ▼ Conservation is today often interpreted as the preservation of a still-shot, an understanding informed by the belief that by displaying photographic memory of the past, it is possible to gain access to it. Naturalistic representation is unequivocal and presents the onlooker with a single meaning. The dominance of the photorealistic image as model for memory, should be challenged by undermining the notion that architectural representation is a portrayal of likeness, restoring its full potential as an iconic representation of presence. A micro-historical study of the Renaissance concept of restoration, focused on Tiberio Alfaranoâ s 1571 ichnography of St. Peterâ s Basilica in the Vatican, offers an alternative paradigm in order to inform, critically, contemporary theory and the practice of the renewal of mnemic buildings. The hybrid drawing (1571) extends beyond the opera of graphic architecture, realizing a real effigy. Alfarano factured a track-drawing, providing memory traces on the drawing-site, which, acting like a veil, bear marks of the buildingâ s presence within time. The ichnography makes visible a â hallowed configurationâ , conceived as a substratum for the imagination of conservation. This defines a collective daydreaming strategy, from which multiple authors can imagine possible futures. Ambiguity and polysemy inform the drawing, generating an equivocal space where unforeseeable inventions occur by the process of future predictions by recollecting memories. This invites merging multiple stories. Grasping the significance of Alfaranoâ s drawing, one begins to comprehend the mistaken belief in the primacy of photo rendering to access a building and conserve its essence. Any essence cannot be achieved through exact visual reconstruction, rather through a chiasmus of past and present form, expressing allegoric significance. The retrospective and prospective character of the architectural-conservation process can be experienced through the intermediacy of hybrid-drawings directing the gaze simultaneously in two directions; a pre-existent condition engages in dialogue with future design. This is a condition absent from todayâ s practice, where measured drawings and design drawings are often kept separate. Seen this way, architectural drawings could rejoin these two temporal conditions, through metaphoric or literal transparency, and allow for a real transformation within continuity of identity. ▼ In organisation studies there has been an increasing interest in ‘identity work’ – that is, the processes through which people’s identities become constructed. The role that others play, along with the self, in identity work has, with varying degrees of emphasis, been a recurrent theme both in the contemporary literature and in its classical antecedents. Extant research leaves scope for further investigation of how others are present within identity working processes and this thesis is primarily concerned with the elaboration and understanding of the centrality of others to the working of identities. An interest in this area stemmed from my professional occupation and its context in a performing arts organisation. My observation of the constructions of the identities of my colleagues and myself was forming prior to my engagement in a formal research role. I adopted an interpretivist perspective, an ethnographic and autoethnographic method and an abductive analytical approach. The data collection was achieved through: field note collection; autoethnographic reflection; semi structured and interactive interviewing; and a reflexive diary. The thesis seeks to augment the identity work literature by applying and elaborating previously under-used theories, in particular, reflexive imagination in Cooley’s ‘Looking Glass Self’ (1902/1983) and ‘social ghosts’ (Gergen, 2001). These ideas are synthesised to produce an understanding of the significance of others to identity working and the processes through which they impact on identity construction. A detailed explication of the qualities of social ghosts and the ways in which actors use them in interaction (identity work moves) leads to more profound understandings of how people work identities in relation to others. This reveals that identity emerges in an interactive process that is other-multiple, tentative and reactive, and which is underpinned by imagining the self in relation to others.
