▼ This project is concerned with the development of the scene of sermon invention in the field of
homiletics. In this dissertation, I trace the development of the ways in which homiletic theory and pedagogy has treated the process of creating sermons. I then critique what becomes a hegemonic consensus that tends to promote an introspective understanding of invention that excludes embodied processes and spatial dynamics. This exclusion has curtailed sustained critical attention to the incarnational and eschatological potential of sermonic creation in both theory and pedagogy. I attempt to theologically reconsider the scene of sermonic invention with careful attention to these dynamics and then offer pedagogical practices that would bring consideration of the actual body of the preacher and the space in which the preacher creates a sermon into the homiletic classroom.

▼ Phyllis Tickle has instructively noted that "about
every five hundred years the empowered structures of
institutionalized Christianity, whatever they may be at that time,
become an intolerable carapace that must be shattered in order that
renewal and new growth may occur." It has been five-hundred years
since the last major shift in the universal Christian church and
now, five-hundred years later, the church is undergoing another
shift that, in part, is instigated by the digital revolution.
Simultaneously, a new generation of potential church attendees have
matured into adulthood and their very presence – or lack
thereof – demands that the way that they digest sermonic content, or
reject it, be examined. This dissertation addresses the question of
what are the most effective paradigms of sermonic communication for
Black millennials. Homileticians have attempted to understand the
patterns of reception for various demographics and define the most
meaningful strategies for speaking to each generation, often
privileging one sermonic method over another. I argue that the
relationship between millennials and hip hop music and culture
signals the need for another shift in the way sermonic content is
communicated. I conclude with a discussion of homiletical
strategies that may be effective to employ in order to attract the
attention of the millennial generation.

▼ 20th century theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich believed that religion could only be understood in the context of the surrounding culture. He attempted to assert Christianity’s importance in the modern era, and did this through his use of language. In this study I examine how Tillich’s rhetorical situation uniquely informed the communication style of his sermons. Drawing on the work of Lloyd Bitzer, this rhetorical situation includes Tillich’s exigencies, rooted both in the personal and historical, his resources and constraints in the form of influences and limitations, and his audience which provided him with an arena. By examining selections from the three volumes of Tillich’s sermons, it is possible to construct his communication theory in five parts. These five elements include logos, or the appropriate use of reason; kairos, or right-timing; language invention and reconfiguration, including translation of religious symbols into existential language; prophetic style; and a focus on community and love. This project is a unique contribution to Tillichian studies and homiletics, as I examine Tillich’s sermons within a rhetorical and communicative frame.

▼ This dissertation seeks to strengthen the relationship between preaching and adolescents. I begin by narrating a critical homiletic history of adolescence in North America, showing how a once fruitful relationship deteriorated. I then examine the contemporary period through three related but non-conversant literatures: the homiletic guild which largely neglects youth, youth ministry literature on preaching which does not engage homiletic theory, and critical youth studies which does not address preaching. These preliminary surveys show how the contemporary homiletic disposition marginalizes the voices of young people. In this context, I propose a new theological and ethical disposition characterized by a dialectic between liberation and formation. The liberation of a “youthful homiletic” requires attentive listening to communicative practices of adolescents, which can offer correctives to preaching and to Christian faith/practice. The formation of a “youthful homiletic” requires adults to maintain a carefully focused interest in young people’s formation as theological communicators, grounded in prior listening. In order to put this disposition into practice, I develop a method of rhetorical analysis that listens to adolescents’ preaching and religious communication, and subsequently assess where they offer correction to adult assumptions and practices as well as where further formation might be warranted.

▼ In 1893 Phillips Brooks died the best-known preacher of his generation and a beloved pastor to the city of Boston. His death abbreviated his life but not his influence. A diverse archive preserved memories of him and his preaching. This project uncovers the ways that these documents and their reception have contributed to an “afterlife” for Brooks. This dissertation investigates four bodies of literature that form the basis of this afterlife: (1) speeches related to his consecration to the episcopate; (2) the memorial addresses prepared after his death; (3) Alexander V.G. Allen’s Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks, the first and longest biography written about Brooks; and (4) Brooks’s Lectures on Preaching and citations of the “truth through personality” definition lifted from that text. The claim of this dissertation is that print made memories of Brooks durable in a way that promised an immortality that ultimately could not be sustained. Michel de Certeau’s theory of historiography enables an examination of this “immortality” and its eventual decay. The result is a series of essays that blend historiography and theology into a display of the exceptional but still mortal personality of Phillips Brooks.

▼ This dissertation investigates the rhetoric of preaching. The project entails understanding and overcoming pejorative perspectives of rhetoric and limited perspectives of preaching that imbue public discourse, scholarship on
homiletics, and historical accounts of preaching and preachers. This dissertation focuses on the fourth-century homilies of the Cappadocian Fathers (Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Gregory of Nyssa). The argument is made that preaching is profoundly rhetorical in nature, both practically and theoretically. Three internal chapters support this argument and construct this dissertation as both a rhetorical history and a rhetorical criticism research project.
Chapter One introduces the aims, perspectives, and approaches of the project. Chapter Two presents broad and specific historical context necessary for understanding the rhetorical insights, arguments, and theories advanced in the subsequent chapters. Chapter Three illustrates in fine detail some of the practical implications of acknowledging the rhetorical nature of preaching and preachers. Chapter Four further pursues the theoretical corollary of the argument by establishing the deeply rhetorical origins of the preaching role and form. Chapter Five summarizes the findings, contributions, and limitations of this dissertation and outlines directions for future research. Combined, these chapters comprise a dissertation that is intended to enrich scholars’ and practitioners’ knowledge of the relationship between rhetoric and
homiletics.

▼ My work on invention begins with the parallel
histories of religion and rhetoric and explains how I define
invention. Rhetoric and
homiletics were once closely related and
are now, at best, estranged. My thesis explores their complex
history and argues that this separation is detrimental. I will then
engage inventional theory and focus on two binaries that run
through invention scholarship: heuristic vs. hermeneutic and
creation vs. discovery. Within each binary I will consider the
homiletic concerns and implications as well as rhetorical ones.
Throughout this work, I will argue that
homiletics is a useful and
interesting site in which inventional theory and practice are
present in a unique, synthetic way. To conclude, I will explore
some homiletic textbooks and analyze the heuristics they use,
taking into consideration the inventional theory and definitions
discussed.

▼ The present text constitutes an overview of the historical context, motivation, objectives,
content and relevance of the academic, scientific and literary production of Jilton Moraes de
Castro as it concerns the religious field in Latin America. The starting point is a historical
view of the sixties and seventies, a time of shortage of literature in the field of Homiletics. As
a seminary faculty, the lack of adequate textbook in the classroom coupled with the demands
of the students led to the production of the needed textbook. Next, it describes how, after the
onset of the first book a trilogy of Homiletics followed. Thirdly, it recounts the origin of five
books geared toward the science of preaching, yielding a total of eight volumes in this area of
practical theology and Christian preaching, in particular. In the fourth place, it points out to
the publication of Homiletics: from research to the pulpit, in Spanish. Fifth, the text provides
a glimpse of ten new titles in the pipeline, some of which with input from other researchers on
the subject from Brazil and Latin America. Next to last, it mentions the usefulness of the
literature published by Jilton Moraes de Castro reaching his birth country, Latin America and
the United States of America. Finally, the text concludes with an attempt to answer some
questions relevant to the subject: why and what we preach? What is the place of preaching
today? As preach this digital generation? How to cristocentricidade must be present in
Christian preaching? What characterizes the protestant preaching in Brazil? The theology and
practice of preaching in Brazil and Latin America need to be questioned.
Menciona a

▼ In the vigorous discourse of prophetic preaching in contemporary homiletic fields, especially Brueggemann’s prophetic preaching has strongly influenced preachers, as well as scholars. His work manifests the counteraction between two imaginations – the dominant and alternative imaginations - in the assurance of the transforming and liberating power of the scripture itself, through the conceptualization of imagination and the work of the Holy Spirit.
In this context, this study is positioned in the homiletic field of the reformed tradition. In a large sense, it attempts to investigate prophetic preaching in an empirical and interpretive as well as a normative and pragmatic way. The aim of this investigation is to illustrate the interrelationship between imagination and the work of the Holy Spirit in prophetic preaching, and consequently to initiate normative, practical principles in a strategic model for contemporary preaching.
To achieve these aims the study explores the ontology and epistemology of prophetic preaching. It identifies problems in the understanding of homiletic praxis, and at the same time examines the definition and history of prophetic preaching. Moreover, to respond to the question of why Brueggemann’s conceptualization regarding imagination has been highlighted, this study conducts an investigation into the available literature relating to Brueggemann’s prophetic imagination. A balanced interpretive and faithful perspective based on a reading of the whole Scripture is consistent throughout Brueggemann's oeuvre and his focus on application based on the transformational message in praxis is remarkable. Normative markers in prophetic preaching, deduced from an exploration and exegesis of specific texts in Luke and Acts, consequently bring about practical principles for application to prophetic preaching. The practical principles are formulated as follows: D (Direction-Diagnosis of the Reality); IEP (Imaginative Embossing of Problems of the Reality); S (Proclamation of the Gospel aiming at Solution); and IP (Imaginative practice). With the use of these principles, example sermons are analyzed and a new sermon for prophetic preaching is written.
The results of this study are expected to provide the preacher with a strategic model to bring prophetic preaching into practice. Lastly, the ontological and epistemological exploration attempted in this study has made a contribution in describing a thicker and more developed definition of prophetic preaching.
In conclusion, prophetic preaching itself should achieve the following aim: to be a presentation of God’s voice, spoken to the preacher and the listeners with the subjective help of the Holy Spirit's working in message transformation.

▼ This thesis employs a historical approach to practical theology in an effort to discover resources from past practices for critical reflection upon a current methodology with the intent of producing a revised practice. The following research question is pursued: How can the practices of patristic preachers enhance the current efforts of redemptive-historical preachers to preach faithfully the New Testament quotations of the Old Testament?
Chapter One reviews literature from five major redemptive-historical theologians: Geerhardus Vos, Edmund Clowney, Sidney Greidanus, Bryan Chapell, and Graeme Goldsworthy. Five of the major shared characteristics of these authors are considered in light of their various contributions.
Chapters Two, Three, and Four examine various patristic homilies, outlining
practical considerations for a contemporary model of preaching. Chapter Two examines two early homilies, 2 Clement and Quis Dives Salvetur, noting the influence of the synagogue. Chapters Three and Four respectively examine the preaching of Origen and Chrysostom. Chapter Five outlines some major characteristics of patristic preaching discovered through a comparison of the findings of chapters Two through Four.
Chapter Six provides a model for preaching New Testament quotations of the Old Testament that is consistent with the theological convictions of redemptive-historical homileticians and informed by the insights gained from reflection upon the practices of patristic preachers. This model makes an original contribution to knowledge by advancing the discussion of redemptive-historical preaching both through the application of the redemptive-historical approach to the New Testament
quotations of the Old Testament and through the consideration of the relationship between redemptive-historical practices and patristic practices.

The research proposes to verify to what measure the contributions from the neurosciences can enrich homiletic science, specifically the Christian preaching. The research presents the neurosciences in a historical perspective, seeking to distinguish its areas of research and establishing delimitations – highlighting the biological and cognitive neurosciences. In sequence the sermon is also dealt with in a historical perspective, describing highlights and evolutions which occurred in the area of preaching from the period of the Reformation to current times. The chapter finishes with a brief systematization of the philosophical and methodological presuppositions which support neurosciences. The second part of the research focuses on the listener of the sermon in the perspective of biological neuroscience, highlighting the Auditory System and the Limbic System. In sequence, the research turns to the listener of the sermon in a theological biblical perspective, more specifically based on key words of the New Testament in dialog with the principle of claritas scripturae of Luther. Relations between the physical-biological processes and the biblical comprehension of listening are demonstrated. The last part of the research seeks to relate the impulses of neuroscience about the human being with the processes of listening, reflecting, feeling, developing and transforming oneself, seeking contributions in the neurosciences which inspire the homiletic task. The thesis takes the element of the narrative in life and in preaching as one of the resources that best corresponds to that which neurosciences point out as important for listening in a broad, deep and committed way.

▼ Christian educators often lack specialized training in message delivery which leads to a lower self-efficacy. Christian educators devote their lives to fulfillment of the Great Commission; it is the job of the church universal to provide resources and support that equip the saints to boldly share the Gospel with great confidence. When self-efficacy is low, confidence is low. Theological foundations are often strong and well-developed by the local church. The practical aspect of preaching, meaning delivery, is an area that is underrepresented in academic research. This project presents specialized training in message delivery as a catalyst for improving self-efficacy. The goal of this action research project was to provide ministry settings with a framework of how to increase the self-efficacy through message delivery training for Christian educators, which include both laity and clergy.

▼ Historically, the preaching of the word of God has been a synthesis of both oral and written orientations with text providing both the source and the preservation of the sermon, and orality fueling its expression. Expression preceded documentation. Scripture displays this dual nature in its revelation, expression and transmission. But with the technologizing of the word in typographic literacy, sermons became increasingly conditioned by the literate sensorium and lost many of their oral psychodynamics. Character, wisdom, dialogue, memory, responsiveness, and flexibility were exchanged for private preparation, literate structuring, and literary delivery. Sermons became disembodied, existing more reliably in externalized text. Walter Ong provides the framework for the reappraisal of communicative history by strategically forgetting the pervasive influence of technology. Recovering the older resources of orality, Ong restores a sense of balance to the oral/literate continuum by returning to the primarily oral orientations of the Greco-Roman world of classic rhetoric, and rehabilitates rhetoric with theological and homiletic implications. Quintilian's infinitely flexible oratory represents the richness of the communicative environment during the infancy of the church. His emphasis on depth of understanding as a prerequisite for public speaking grounds the speaker in resources beyond the pragmatics of the specific situation or topic, and can be profitably applied to contemporary homiletic praxis. Quintilian's understanding of oral composition, memory, roadmapping, and kairos is applicable to the kind of preparation and delivery required by an intentional move toward an orally-conditioned homiletic.

▼ The study of two magazines, namely Porefthedes (Go Ye) and Panta ta Ethni (All Nations) emphasizes their historic contribution to the transmission and intake of the Gospel’s message worldwide. Additionally, it resulted in the recrudescence of Greeks’ interest in Mission. The current Archbishop of Tirana and all Albania Anastasios was the founder of both magazines. The former, Porefthedes, arisen from the processes of “Syndesmos” (Association) in 1959, kept issuing from 1961 up to 1969 under the care of the “Inter-Orthodox Missionary Centre Porefthedes”, laid the foundations for the revival of Mission. Panta ta Ethni, a journalistic instrument of the Church of Greece, labours for the continuation of the Greek-speaking Orthodox martyria/witness utmost the world from 1981, when first issued, up to present. This paper first attempts to describe the publication process of the two magazines (artistic elaboration, structure of copies, linguistic means) and investigate the specific features of the editors (transmitters); it also provides facts concerning the readers (receivers). Secondly, the structure of the articles is put under scope (form, time reference, titles, biblical and patristic documentation), Moreover, the theological documentation of the Orthodox martyria (message) has been recorded, divided into thematic categories. Thirdly, journalistic information from the new churches are cited, as well as from the historic Churches’ initiations for the support of the Missionary Cause. Religious-ethnological features of the various nations Orthodox missionaries encountered are registered further down. An investigation of the role of image in the transmission of the magazines’ message is discussed next. Finally, there is a comparative evaluation of the two magazines, so as to highlight the features of the texts and photographs employed to codify the Christian Message, then transmitted by the imprinted missionary channels. Despite their differences, Porefthedes (Go Ye) and Panta ta Ethni (All Nations), via their missionary speech, contributed greatly to the resurgence of the Orthodox mission.

▼ The present dissertation, "The Homiletic Work of Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Sourozh" aims at presenting the homeletic work of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh. The work's first chapter contains an extended critical biography of Metropolitan Anthony since he is not well known in Greece. At the same time, this biography serves to reveal one of the basic elements of communication, that is to say the "sender", which in this case is the homilist. Through the course of the remaining chapters the communicative scheme will be filled out by the addition of the remaining elements. This information, in combination with the information gathered by means of the attempt to place Metropolitan Anthony's homiletic work with the context of the Christian homiletic tradition by analysing his work in light of the generally-accepted characteristic of the Christian homily, will reveal a complete picture of Metropolitan Anthony as a homilist. In Chapter Two, the homiletic work of Metropolitan Anthony - all of the roughly 600 homilies - will be presented in its entirety, organized chronologically in a series of charts. This represents the first time that such an effort to organize his homiletic work has been undertaken since the greatest part of his work has only become available recently through The Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh Archive. With regard to the communicative scheme, these charts reveal both the receivers of his messages and the themes which he chose to develop. Chapter Three presents the basic principles of homiletics as these appear in the work of Metropolitan Anthony. It was discovered that despite not having studied theology formally, he often made statements which revealed a deep, but naturally cultivated, understanding of homiletic principles as these are described in the most significant homiletic textbooks. In Chapter Four, the core of the dissertation, thirty of Metropolitan Anthony's homilies, deemed representative of his ecclesiastical career, are presented. These homilies, translated into Greek, are then analysed for those characteristics which are representative of the Christian homiletic tradition (i.e., that the homilist cultivates living dialogue with those listening to him preach, that the homily is interpretive in character and that the Scriptures are projected throughout, and finally that those rhetorical devices which have become common in the genre are employed) as well as for the remaining of the fundamental elements of communication. On the basis of this analysis, it is concluded that Metropolitan Anthony represents a genuine link in the chain of the Christian homiletic tradition since; first, he attempts to create living dialogue with his listeners through the use us questions, and the use of the first-person plural – "we"; second, though he often does not take his themes from the scriptural readings read at services, his homilies are full of references to the scriptures. These he seeks to interpret for his flock; and third, most of the common rhetorical devices common…

▼ Although there are a lot of popular books available
on the
subject of hope I still believe that there is a need for
another study on the phenomenon of hope. Especially where proper
exegesis and a multidiscipline approach are taken into account. In
this study I’ve researched the effect of a society in transition on
hope. I suspect that the changes since 1994 have a significant
influence on the attitude, thought and behaviour of the Afrikaner
especially. To come to such a conclusion the study take theories of
change in Sociology into account. Some information were gathered
from papers. The reason for that is the influence papers have on
the spirit of society, and in this case its influence on people’s
hope. Unfortunately one of the conclusions is that a lack of hope
can very well be one of the consequences of the changes in society
since 1994. The contemporary study is followed by a study on hope
in Paul’s letter to the Romans. The background of the author, the
congregation and the theology of the letter were taken in
consideration. In most of the cases I’ve used the verses in the
letter where the word hope was used. Surprisingly there is quite a
comparison between the letter of Romans and society today as far as
the reasons that causes hopelessness. Therefore Romans can be of
great value to give hope in a disorientated society. Until now we
know that there is a lack of hope in society, and that Romans give
us reason to hope, but what is the person looking like that we want
to communicate with? The study on post modernity show us how this
“new” paradigm looks like. Post modernity is very different to
modernism. The latest paradigm is universal and no one and nothing
can escape it. Social sciences, the arts, economy, science itself
and the theology were largely influenced by post modernity. With
its larger emphasis on spirituality it creates wonderful
opportunities for preaching. On the other side though, one should
also keep its threats in mind, especially the proneness to
relativism and New Age. In the last chapter I use all the
information and conclusions of the previous chapters to get to a
homiletic strategy for a postmodern context. The most important
part of this chapter is to conclude that confession is a suitable
hermeneutical and homiletical tool for preaching in post modernity.
There is no need to prove confession, it is about something that is
believed. The Bible therefore is still as relevant as ever.
Communication strategies are included to guide the preacher in the
most effective way when preaching in a postmodern context. The
chapter ends with certain specific homiletic contents from the
Roman letter that can be used today. We can know for certain that
hopelessness is part of our society today. However we’ve got the
promise of Romans 15:13 that God stays our God of hope. Our tasks
are to posision us homiletically, hermeneutically and strategically
in such a way that we give our faith the best possible
chance.

▼ The primary aim of this study is to attempt to
provide a means of restoring evangelical preaching in Xhosa
churches. I will attempt to answer the question, How can the
evangelical preaching be restored in Xhosa churches in the Western
Cape? From personal observation, it is clear that in contemporary
Xhosa evangelicalism, preaching is totally misunderstood. To put
more bluntly, there are no clear criteria from biblical theology
for preaching in Xhosa churches. Indeed so much is happening in the
name of preaching that offers no substance whatsoever. In the first
two chapter’s of this study, the focus is on the problem that the
Xhosa church is experiencing and how preaching is understood and
practiced in this community. Chapter three examines the causes of
the problem and how to deal with those causes. On a practical note,
it is shown that sermon analyses are inevitable for further
consideration of the problem. Moreover, the chapter examines
various attempts that have been made in response to the problem. In
Chapter four, an investigation of the views of biblical theology on
the
subject of preaching is carried out. The chapter dwells into
what the Bible offers on the
subject of preaching and this is meant
to serve as a foundation for the restoration of evangelical
preaching in Xhosa churches. In the light of Chapter four, Chapter
five argues for expository preaching as a possible means of
responding to the crisis which the Xhosa church is experiencing. At
the same time chapter five seek to state the case for expository
preaching. Finally, Chapter Six provides the most effective
material for Xhosa preachers in the process of exploring and
constructing expository sermons.

▼ This dissertation engages the sermons of African American women with the purpose of learning more about their preaching content and style. I begin by exploring the social location of African American women, and how their social location problematizes their monolithic absorption into the categories of Black preaching and women’s preaching. I then examine the strengths of creative ingenuity as a means of understanding how African American women negotiate listener expectations of a sermon. These listener expectations are cultural products established overtime, through the simultaneous practice of preaching and listening to preaching. At minimum, within sermons, listeners expect to hear something familiar to their life experience, scripture, theological reflection, and a primary message. With these expectations in view, I then analyze the sermons of seven women alongside of Black and women’s preaching literature. I categorize both the distinctive elements of their sermons and ways in which their sermons are parallel to, disruptive to, and divergent from the literature. In order to resource preaching as a form of creative ingenuity, I end with a distinctly pedagogical orientation. I develop a guided process for aspects of sermon development, based on the distinctive components of these preaching women’s sermons.

▼ The study on the role of preaching within the United Church of Zambia in Kitwe, with a purpose of finding out and documenting the role of preaching in three case study congregations of the United Church of Zambia in the city of Kitwe, and to underscore the point that the study has focused on how members of the three case study congregations described and justified the superiority of preaching. It includes the analysis of data from the three case study congregations of the United Church of Zambia and applying the methodology of Richard Osmer’s (2008) practical theological interpretation. The literature was from books, and data was collected from the participants by using their experiences in a research perspective.
The researcher used unstructured interviews from thirty-one participants drawn from the three congregations of the United Church of Zambia within the city of Kitwe, employing qualitative methods in the collection and analysis of data.

▼ The purpose of this thesis project is to propose a new strategy for preparing Biblical Preaching by demonstrating the value of using Relational Reading (RR). Since preaching is communication between God and His people, preachers must properly handle God’s message, His Word, written for His people. RR is a powerful interpretive tool that can help maintain the integrity of Scripture and assist pastors in their biblical preaching ministry. Theoretical and biblical research was conducted in relevant literature and articles on hermeneutics, homiletics and linguistics. Based on surveys sent to current pastors, the present situation of biblical interpreting and preaching was diagnosed. To prove the benefits and possible applications of RR, several biblical discourses were analyzed, and homiletic applications were presented from the results of analyzing discourse structures. Findings in this study were integrated to develop an appropriate nine-step manual intended to aid pastors in using RR for preparing biblical preaching.

The goal of this investigation is to analyze preaching from the concept of a dialogical pronouncement. Since the place of the Word is in the worship service, we want to deepen the relationship that the preached Word has based on the sacramental and liturgical gathering. As a guide we use the question Jesus put to his disciples: “And you, who do you say that I am?” (Mk 8:29; Mt 16:15; Lk 9:20). Throughout the investigation, this question will guide us, sometimes consciously and formally, other times unconsciously and informally. We base ourselves on the works of Bakhtin which defined dialog, among the different social voices, as polyphonic. We want to apply this concept to the field of homiletics, above all, to Christian preaching. The sermon is the polyphonic dialog of the divine-human event. The way in which the sermon is carried out, its content, its meaning, its significance, the theme, the people, the culture, the institutions, Jesus Christ composes the polyphony in which the sermon is inserted. The use of the theory of Bakhtin aims at helping homiletics to show the many voices and contexts which make up the Christian sermon, as well as to reflect directly into and based on the contexts and unique and unrepeatable acts of the communicational-linguistic happening of the living voice of the Gospel. This living voice wants to resound in the world of life. It wants to dialog with the different human pronouncements which were and are proffered. The main results of the research indicate that preaching is the union of various social and cultural voices which meet in the worship service. It is the dialogical and communicative pronouncement of the living voice of the Gospel which is carried out in a linguistic event. The methodology employed in this paper is bibliographic and is focused on transdisciplinary readings.
A prédica é o diálogo polifônico do evento divino-humano.

This work is a detailed analysis of worship services and sermons delivered during pub-lic commemoration events after catastrophic events of crisis. The question is explored how, in the face of a heterogeneous society and a broad public presence, comfort was given in public commemoration services and how hope was reflected. In closing the-ses, possible criteria are given for adequately speaking of Christian hope in similar sit-uations. The conclusion is that the sermon should be perceived as part of the whole process and that worship, with its music, songs, readings and rituals, should be under-stood as a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk and also as a contextualized response to the par-ticipants of different backgrounds. The sermon, profiled in the Christian message, should respect the differences in society, faith and person. The rich treasure of the biblical canon can be reflected in preaching, prayer, song and ritual, in particular
through the psalms, with their formed lament, and brought into conversation with the Christian hope.

▼ This study is focused on rhetorical dynamics in contemporary papal discourse from the perspective of generic criticism. The approach provides a critical framework in which individual elements of the discourse can be examined as parts of an organic whole, working together to achieve coherent rhetorical functions.
Through examining the generic elements in contemporary papal discourse, this study finds that contemporary papal discourse consists of three distinct rhetorical genres: didactic document, homiletic speech, and papal visit. Although these genres differ from one another in stylistic elements and some substantive elements, they share the same functional foundation: the rhetorical genre of homily. The genre of homily is recognized by its tripartite functions of proclaiming, teaching, and intriguing. Proclaiming is the manifestation of kerygma, seeking to convert non-believers; teaching is the function of dogma, directed to believers. The two contrasting and balancing aspects of kerygma and dogma generate tension, which in turn provides the third function of intriguing.
Kerygma produces the rhetorical condition that Dale Sullivan calls "kairotic," under which the response of pistis (belief) is prompted instead of krisis (judgment). The teaching function of the homily form is epideictic in nature and requires the pre-existing community. The homily form combines the two seemingly exclusive functions, extending the effectiveness of the artistic proof of good reasons toward skeptical publics. The skeptical publics, who do not respond to the kerygma with pistis, may still acknowledge the reasonableness of dogma and consider further conversations worthy. This strategic combination of kerygma and dogma is termed the rhetoric of kerygma. Through textual analyses, this study demonstrates that the rhetoric of kerygma is manifested both in the homily form and in the contemporary papal genres.
The rhetoric of kerygma may find applications outside religious discourse because it may help students of rhetoric to understand how orators working from positions of grounded certainty engage publics rhetorically on matters of contingency, especially when the publics are skeptical of the certainty.

▼ Christian preaching has been a central and significant custom to the practitioners of biblically confessional and creedal communities in worship, evangelization, and discipleship. Yet modern preachers confront two challenges presented by the New Homiletic and the media environment. Undue favor toward narrative-based form, audience-oriented eventfulness at the expense of biblical authority, and shifting media that alter the preacher’s identity and incapacitate the preacher’s orality have led to a dissonant handling of form and content and thus a profound decline in the quality of the Christian pulpit.
This project grows out of an attempt to integrate an Augustinian hermeneutic and homiletic, Ciceronian coordinates, and an Ongian perspective on orality and literacy. It proposes an oral homiletic praxis, in anticipation of rectifying current homiletic deficiencies, that proceeds in the fashion of comprehension-internalization-proclamation. The design and plan of this homiletic praxis fulfills Augustine’s two-sided scheme of treating the Holy Scriptures, performs Cicero’s five rhetorical arts, and proclaims the gospel in a spontaneous, memorable, extemporaneous, and eventful way like the speakers of primary oral cultures do.
A sound praxis of oral
homiletics fuses form and content, oriented toward a harmonious treatment of scriptural authenticity and contemporary eventfulness. The acknowledgement of human depravity in temporality demands a Christian
inventio that can address the reality of complex and obscure signs with faith, hope, and charity. The delivery carries force from the heart, breaks through the barrier of literacy, and connects listeners together in an empathetic way. Throughout the whole process of sermonic preparation and proclamation, the interplay between the skills of biblical interpretation and the practices of orality presents the picture of a literate, textual message first taken in and then spoken out orally by the preacher.

▼ In this thesis I investigate contemporary education theory as a way of understanding formative influences in the development of Christian preachers. I suggest that concepts of communities of practice and legitimate peripheral participation, along with recognition of role models and mentors, have a part to play in the life-long project that is learning to preach. In my Introduction I consider a definition of preaching for the purpose of the research and some historical approaches to developing preachers. I examine in Chapter 2 adult learning principles and cognitively-oriented concepts, such as learning styles and the theory of multiple intelligences. In Chapters 3 and 4 social learning theories that I examine include imitation, the effect of role models, and the influence of the mentor or the coach. Further, I ask to what extent the development of the preacher, as in many other professions with agreed standards of competency, does and should take place within communities of practice where legitimate peripheral participation (as developed in the work of Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger) marks the developing preacher‘s sense of his or her own learning trajectory. After a fifth chapter on methodologies, these concepts are tested in three field studies that use a range of sociological research methods. I conduct in Chapter 6 quantitative analysis of questionnaires returned by Church of Scotland ministers, in Chapter 7 qualitative analysis of the published testimony of fifteen experienced preachers, and in Chapter 8 qualitative analysis of interviews with twelve young Methodist preachers. In my conclusion I develop a theologically nuanced version of Lave and Wenger‘s concept which I term a community of agreed sermonic enterprise. Principal practical recommendations deriving from this centre on creating supportive networks of reflective preaching practitioners, enhancing the provision of mentor-mentee relationships, and educating congregations for their role in shaping preachers.

▼ This dissertation proposes and analyzes the integration of doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 traces the recent history of doctrinal preaching and expository preaching. Problems related to postmodernism, the New Homiletic, and the changes within contemporary evangelicalism also receive treatment.
Chapter 2 defines and blends the definitions of expository preaching and doctrinal preaching. These definitions form the basis for defining doctrinal expository preaching. Several doctrinal prerequisites of an expositor conclude this section.
Chapter 3 examines the biblical basis for doctrinal exposition. The semantic domain for preaching and the Bible's practitioners of doctrinal exposition support this basis.
Chapter 4 incorporates the disciplines of biblical and systematic theology for the task of theological interpretation. Moreover, principles for theological exegesis of literary genres prepare the expositor for the homiletical process. The chapter concludes with steps in the doctrinal expository sermon process as well as with two valid approaches for implementing doctrinal exposition.
Chapter 5 covers postmodern issues of truth, entertainment, language, image, and story. Also, the
subject of applying doctrine is discussed. Observations of valuable doctrines for contemporary evangelicalism end this section.
Chapter 6 describes many practicalities of doctrinal exposition. A summary concludes the work.
This study argues for the need to integrate doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Furthermore, this work proposes doctrinal exposition distinctively, biblically, theologically, and practically. In order for preachers to declare the whole counsel of God, sermons must employ doctrinal exposition.

▼ This study deals with creative preaching through
exploring pneumatology and creativity as prime ingredients for
creative preaching. The researcher sees the problem of preaching in
terms of the limited resources for proclaiming the very old message
of the gospel of Jesus Christ in a fast changing world. Preaching
in the reformed tradition is based primarily upon the Bible and the
tradition of the church. The researcher suspects that, given the
limitations of the age of the source, the preacher runs the risk of
boring the congregation, who regularly attends sermons, by becoming
irrelevant to their living conditions through having to repeat the
same basic message. The researcher suspects that the preacher may
run out of ideas and ways of bringing a relevant message in a fresh
way, week after week, and begin to employ all kinds of tricks and
gimmicks in order to stay relevant. Creative preaching is suggested
as answer to this dilemma. Creative preaching is studied within the
frame of creativity in service of the Holy Spirit. The study
strives to explore the field of creativity from a homiletical
perspective and bring the results into a pneumatological context by
means of a hermeneutical method, with the aim of designing a basic
theory for creative preaching. The first part of the study
comprises a literature study of the fields of pneumatology and
creativity. Pneumatology is explored in terms of the biblical roots
of the use and meaning of the terms rûah, pneuma and paracletos, as
well as a brief theological exploration. A pneumatology for
preaching includes the Spirit as carrier of the Word and inspirer
of the preacher and listener, within the context of the
congregation as dedicated space for the working of the Spirit. The
second part of the literature study deals with creativity as a
human capacity that can be learnt and developed. Creativity is a
deliberate dynamic activity that produces new, unexpected and
meaningful results through creative observation, creative thinking
and creative insight. Empirical research was conducted amongst
preachers in the Dutch Reformed Church to ascertain their
understanding of creative preaching and their experience of the
workings of the Holy Spirit and creativity, in the process of
producing a sermon. The research found that preachers understood
the Holy Spirit as a vital part of the preaching process. Preachers
experience the activity of the Spirit in their normal daily
routines as ministers. Preachers do not regard themselves as
creative people although they apply principles of creativity
primarily in producing visual material for sermons as an additive.
The Research found a need for the concept of creative preaching.
Creative preaching is developed and described as a process in which
the preacher, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, employs
creative methods like observation, association, imagination and
creative thinking in the whole process of sermon creation, from
choice of Scripture to the presentation of the sermon. The sermon
is structured in such a way as not only to be…
