▼ Jorge Semprún’s work is the fruit of an incarceration in the concentration camp of Buchenwald as a resistance fighter and his expulsion from the Partido Comunista Español in 1964. Due to these biographical circumstances, many critical literary studies to date limit the discussion of his works to the autobiographical and the realm of Holocaust studies. Together with the texts that do not fit adequately into this categories, his self-identification as a Spanish
exile has up to now been neglected. The present thesis aims to provide a more global view of his oeuvre by extending the literary analyses to texts that have deserved little critical attention. In order to achieve this, it investigates the role played by
memory and self-representation in a variety of works by Semprún. Aspects connected to
memory such as
exile and nostalgia, the Holocaust, the interplay between
memory and writing, politics and collective
memory, postmemory and identity are examined by means of a detailed analysis of the selected works and are discussed thematically. Differences in genre are discarded for the discussion and interconnections between the various narratives are highlighted. With the help of
memory and trauma theories, we come to the conclusion that
memory is the overarching principle of Semprún’s writing and that he invests it with an aesthetic and ethical value which is interpreted as the justification for his devotion to writing.

The military dictatorship was a remarkable period in the history of Brazil and there is much debate about which memory is the "true", which memory of this period has to be preserved. All these preservation of relationships and building the dictatorship of memory in bring relevant issues to understand how we as a society, we deal with our past history. This work entitled Testimonies of the Dictatorship: the construction of memory in the book Memories of Exile Women
aims to discuss the memories that were produced by brazilian exiled during the military dictatorship. This was a remarkable period that is constantly building by various groups and individuals, and we intend to put these women also in this debate. We use to this research the work Memories Women's exile, which was published in 1980 by Paz e Terra publishing house, where it is present the testimony of 43 different women, but who are in the same situation: exiled. Exile is being away from home, far from their place of origin; and this detachment from Brazil gave these women a time of assessment of their lives, militancy. This documentation as well as the bibliography, was used in order to meet our objective to ascertain that memory of military dictatorship is being built in the accounts of exiled; the meaning assigned by them to that period and issues such as torture, exile, imprisonment, militancy, and trauma.

The aim of this research, Romanness in Pliny the Elder and the Natural History as a political-pedagogical project, is to analyze the Natural History (44-77 AD) as a discourse produced in a specific socio-historical context, in which Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), based on Latin and Greek tradition, introduced a new ideal of Romanness. The research also proposes to read this Romanness vis-à-vis the issue of identity in the ancient Greco-Roman world. In the 1st century, in an increasingly multicultural and multiethnic empire, the Pax provided by the government of Vespasian (69-79 AD), of the Flavian dynasty, expanded a process of romanization in which Pliny participated as intellectual and government official. Pliny presented his Natural History as a thesaurus or memoryItalian-Roman and Greekof the Roman Empires grandeur. Our hypothesis proposes the complete
reading of the Natural History (with an emphasis on the analysis of the preface and books 2 and 33 through 37)…

Based on a multidisciplinary approach and favoring the relation between historic and literary studies, this work is presented in three sections, each addressing the main topic: the dissident discourse of the writer José Bergamín in the Spanish Transition, from different angles. The first section approaches the subject based on issues related to the Historical Memory Movement in Spain along with a new understanding of the Spanish Transition to democracy. Against this background, Bergamín’s dissident voice takes on a whole new meaning that calls into question the marginalization of this outstanding 20th century Spanish intellectual. The second part presents a thematic analysis of Bergamín’s journalistic articles for Sábado Gráfico, the main source of reference for this research. Through this magazine Bergamín was able to freely express his opinions until censorship brought about his dismissal. The third part offers a political and chronological account of Bergamín’s discourse throughout the previously mentioned articles and portrays a testimony of dissent with the Spanish Transition, based on his opposition to monarchy and his struggle for the republic as an alternative. This research confirms the validity of the key hypothesis raised, namely that Bergamín was the spokesman of the «España peregrina», firmly rooted in a republican faith nurtured by historical memory and experience, opposed to the spirit of…

This dissertation approaches the themes of exile and memory in four Hispanic-American novels: Andamios (1997) and Geografías (2000), by the Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti; En cualquier lugar (1984) and Conversación al sur (1981), by the Argentinian Marta Traba. We aimed at investigating the narratives of trails found in these novels based on memory as an attempt to hinder the vanishing of the traces by the
authoritarian political regimes in Uruguay and Argentina. Fronteiras da memória, o exílio de cada um: a narrativa dos rastros em Mario Benedetti e Marta Traba is set as a comparative study of interdisciplinary feature in which we take into account the theoretical assumptions about exile, memory, the History and the Cultural Studies. It is assumed that Benedetti takes exile and the traces of memory to build the future from the past. However, the works by Traba, although she also sets her narratives in the exile, do not express a progression of what was lived. In this case, exile and the past remain circumscribed to a fractured memory, understood as trails. We aim at identifying the trails of an involuntary memory in the characters in the works of both authors. Exile acts as a trigger to involuntary memory, compound by images of a passed time whose remembrances are idealized by the perspective of the detachment. The boundary in the relationship involving literature, memory and history
in the narratives analysed in also a goal. The hypothesis is that literature exposes what was not said in a…

▼ Recurrent and intrusive distressing recollections of trauma are a hallmark symptom of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The term ‘flashback’ is used in this thesis to refer to vivid, sensory perceptual (predominantly visual images), emotional memories from a traumatic event that intrude involuntarily into consciousness. Furthermore, intrusive image based memories occur in a number of other psychological disorders, for example, bipolar disorder and depression. Clinically, the presence and occurrence of flashbacks and flashback type memories are well documented. However, in terms of the neural underpinnings there is limited understanding of how such flashback memories are formed or later involuntarily recalled. An experimental psychopathology approach is taken whereby flashbacks are viewed on a continuum with other involuntary autobiographical memories and are studied using analogue emotional events in the laboratory. An initial review develops a heuristic clinical neuroscience framework for understanding flashback memories. It is proposed that flashbacks consistent of five component parts – mental imagery, autobiographical memory, involuntary recall, attention hijacking and negative emotion. Combining knowledge of the component parts helped provide a guiding framework, at both a neural and behavioural level, into how flashback memories may be formed and how they return to mind unbidden. Four studies (1 neuroimaging, 3 behavioural) using emotional film paradigms were conducted. In the first study, the trauma film paradigm was combined with neuroimaging (n = 35) to investigate the neural basis of both the encoding and the involuntary recall of flashback memories. Results provided a first replication of a specific pattern of brain activation at the encoding of memories that later returned as flashbacks. This included elevation in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex, insula, thalamus, ventral occipital cortex and left inferior frontal gyrus (during just the encoding of scenes that returned as flashbacks) alongside suppressed activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus (during the encoding of scenes that returned as flashbacks in other participants, but not that individual). Critically, this is also the first study to show the brain activation at the moment of flashback involuntary recall in the scanner. Activation in the middle and superior frontal gyri and the left inferior frontal gyrus was found to be associated with flashback involuntary recall. In the second study, control conditions from 16 behavioural trauma film paradigm experiments were combined (n = 458) to investigate commonly studied factors that may be protective against flashback development. Results indicated that low emotional response to the traumatic film footage was associated with an absence of flashbacks over the following week. The third study used a positive film to consider the emotional valence of the emotion component of the framework. Positive emotional response at the time of viewing the footage was associated with positive involuntary…

▼ M.S. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2011.
Polynesoecetes kekeae (Myers 1975) is a gastropod shell-inhabiting amphipod that lives with a micro-hermit crab (Pagurixus sp.) and shell-inhabiting tanaid on backreefs of Moorea, French Polynesia. Field samples revealed that all three crustaceans occupied the same species of prosobranch shells and there was an overlap in shell size utilization between P. kekeae and Pagurixus sp. and between P. kekeae juveniles and tanaids. Empty shells were rarely observed, and P. kekeae inhabited damaged shells more frequently than Pagurixus sp. A shell selection experiment indicated that P. kekeae also inhabit smaller shells than preferred. Behavioral experiments found that a Pagurixus sp. hermit crab without a shell was capable of forcefully evicting P. kekeae from its shell. It is suggested that shells are a limiting resource and exploitative competition likely occurs among P. kekeae, Pagurixus sp. and tanaids. There is evidence that interference competition may also occur between the amphipod and hermit crab. This shell-inhabiting crustacean assemblage is an interesting example of convergent evolution of adaptations specific to inhabiting gastropod shells and is the first documentation of hermit crabs competing with non-hermit crabs for shells.

▼ This thesis looks at Nineteenth Century American adventure narratives to examine the role of the
wilderness. This thesis centers on a motif of isolated characters in the
wilderness and analyzes the various techniques nineteenth-century authors use to project the psyche of their characters. The selected Nineteenth Century authors: Washington Irving, Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Alan Poe, Harriet Spofford,
Nathaniel Hawthorne, and
Herman Melville root America’s identity in the
wilderness. They emphasize its power on the human psyche as positive, restorative, inward-looking, and divine. This thesis argues that these authors portray the
wilderness as a protagonist that needs to be preserved in an expanding America.

The present theses analyses the experience of having leprosy in Rio Grande do Sul and being isolated in the Colony Hospital Itapuã. We aimed at discussing the processes of isolation, exclusion and rebuilding of life inside the institution. Founded in the 1940s the leprosarium isolated inflicted people from all over the state. Some of them still live in the hospital and through their story we were able to capture their experience. It was also possible to contact people who left the leprosarium and through those two distinct paths we analyzed the medical and social struggle that meant a leprosy diagnosis only a few decades ago. Lori and GM are the main characters of that plot. She is the oldest resident in Itapuã and her personal story is deeply connected to the institutions; he was admitted in the 1940s but has lived outside the hospital for over 50 years, and his life has been enormously affected by the time he spent there and the living with that memory. The focus on those two individual micro universes had the intention of getting closer to the character of the sick human being, who is historically poorly known. Due to his physical and social distress the sick person is able to reveal important aspects of daily defying the disease as well as social aspects and practices.

▼ This thesis uses a series of non-fiction vignettes to explore objects, agencies, and networks, applying theories of rhetoric and composition directly to experience and vise versa. Focusing on agency – as understood through sociology's actor-networks, post- humanism’s Object Orientated Ontology, and Ecocriticism's ecological approach – I look at events, landscapes, and partnerships that have shaped who I am and why I write. I find that when life is viewed as a nexus of agencies instead of as a hierarchy, with humans as dominant agency,
wilderness becomes a quality of existence that humans already possess in the form of creativity. Once we tap into that quality to examine existence, we discover that we cannot exist without partnerships, and we owe much of our experience, writing, and creativity to the unseen influences of these partners.

▼ This dissertation reappraises the use of hyperbole by
the exiled Roman poet Ovid through close readings of his Tristia,
Epistulae ex Ponto, and Ibis that consider their engagement with
broader early-Imperial discourses. Ovid’s exaggerated statements in
these works have traditionally been recruited as evidence for
claims about the unreliability of Ovid’s narrative and his
untrustworthiness as a narrator. My principal argument is that
hyperbole offers the poet a unique tool for furthering his poetic
goals and developing his major themes by disrupting the reader’s
conception of what is normal and possible. By tearing the logical
fabric, hyperbole creates a space for the poet to rewrite
traditional narratives of
exile, empire, Scythia, and Rome. Chapter
1 considers the causes of the overwhelmingly negative modern
response to Ovidian hyperbole, tracing its designation as
“problematic” back to the theoretical discussions of Aristotle,
Quintilian, Demetrius, and Longinus. I show how many of the issues
raised by these ancient critics are rearticulated by modern
scholars of Ovid. At the same time, these modern scholarly
responses to hyperbole are conditioned by nineteenth- and
twentieth-century aesthetic and literary critical preferences,
which constructs a divide between authenticity, sincerity, and
truthfulness on the one hand and insincerity, rhetoric, and
dishonesty on the other. The following three chapters each examine
a different type of hyperbole or exaggerated statement. Chapter 2
looks at adynata, proverbial statements of impossibility, and
demonstrates how the images used draw from and develop the central
contrast between utopian Rome and dystopian Scythia. Chapter 3
examines Ovid’s use of the wandering hero figure, particularly
Ulysses, as a model for his
exile, which hinges on the metaphor of
exile as shipwreck, concluding that the claim to surpass Ulysses
participates in contemporary discussion of geography and imperial
expansion. Chapter 4 focuses on the Ibis catalogue, especially the
last two lines, which position Ovid’s
exile as the worst possible
fate, and uses this hyperbole to re-read the other
exile poems.
Several themes bind these separate instances of hyperbole,
including the Golden Age,
exile as curse, and infinite
lists.

▼ In this thesis, I explore the experience and significance of absence in the lives of Pontians who live in Adelaide. Pontians are descendants from colonies of Greeks who, for at least 3000 years, inhabited the area bordering the Black Sea in northern Turkey in an area once called Pontos. Their underlying and ongoing sense of absence derives from two historical events of loss. One is from a genocide and enforced
exile from Pontos wherein 350,000 of their people died between 1917 and 1923. The other is from voluntary migration when some of the Pontic Greeks who had settled in Greece, and/or their descendants, came to Australia as part of the mass migration of peoples in the mid 20th century. The memories and narratives of the traumatic loss of people and place from Pontos, and the experiences associated with migration to Australia, have played a pivotal role in the construction and experience of absence for Pontians and is an important dimension of their identity as Pontians. The
memory of loss is always in the present and is evoked by present experiences and sensed through a multi-faceted expression of emotions. It is embodied in a variety of corporeal practices such as commemorations, dance, community gatherings and return visits and is experienced as an absence. Given that many of my informants have lived in Adelaide for up to fifty years, a central question of this thesis is, how do they continue to remember the loss of their former homelands and why does this elicit an often deep emotional response? In this thesis, I explore how social
memory, emotions and embodiment intertwine in the practices of commemoration, dance and journeys to show how loss from the past events of
exile and migration are brought into the present to be experienced as both an absence and the presence of that absence. Focusing on how the body experiences being-in-the-world through temporally and historically informed sensory engagement, as well as drawing on a conscious as well as an unconscious reservoir of meaning, loss is not only tied to past events but in and through the body becomes both an absence of a presence and the presence of an absence.

▼ Since the 1980s, Spain has attempted to recuperate the intellectual legacy of the republican exiles who fled the country after losing the Civil War (1936-1939). However, in doing so, it has produced the recuperation-integration paradigm that governs contemporary
memory politics. The problem with this model is that it naturalizes an illusory, teleological line of continuity between the democratic principles of post-Francoist Spain and the Second Republic. Duelos disidentes contributes to the critique of this recuperation-integration paradigm by examining the political projects delineated in the memoirs of Spanish, Basque republican, and Basque nationalist women-in-
exile. Published between 1970 and 2011, what unites the memoirs of these three women—María Teresa León (1903-1988), Aurora Arnáiz (1913-2009), and Arantza Cazalis (1929)—is the defense of the Second Republic (1931-1936) as an alternative to the capitalist liberalism that started to develop under Franco’s dictatorship (1939-1975). I argue that the autobiographical works of León, Arnáiz, and Cazalis politicize emotion to articulate an aesthetics of female mourning that disrupts the continuity between the Second Republic and post-Francoist, neoliberal Spain. This aesthetics advances a double critique: on the one hand, it condemns the exclusion of women from the official history of the Spanish Civil War; on the other, it formulates an alternative to the temporality of the patriarchal capitalist nation (León, chapter 2), the legal person of the liberal political tradition (Arnáiz, chapter 3), and the elitism and colonial imaginary of the literary canon of the
exile of 1939 (Cazalis, chapter 4). But as I defend in Duelos disidentes, the misencounter of these women-in-
exile with Latin America reveals the limits that arise from the nationalist ideologies camouflaged in their (anti)colonial transatlantic rhetoric. This study elucidates how an aesthetics of mourning can serve as an alternative paradigm of historical
memory that does not neutralize its political component. In the process, it sheds light on the colonial imaginary that troubled the relationship of progressive, European exiles with Latin America, contributing to current debates about the
memory of colonialism, anti-capitalist struggles, and women in politics.
This dissertation builds on previously published material.

▼ Luis Cernuda (1902-1963) was exiled from Spain in 1938 due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He lived in Great Britain, America and Mexico and he never returned to his homeland. Until the mid-1960s, he was considered by the Spanish literary establishment to be an evasive and astringent poet. Since then, critics have recognised and praised the ethical quality and nature of his work and he is now considered to be one of the most profound and influential Spanish poets of the twentieth century. Despite the growing body of critical work on Cernuda, the salient role played by
memory in his poetry has received little sustained critical attention. Critics have tended to stress the nostalgic and the evasive rather than the ethical and contemplative role played by
memory in his work both before and after his departure from Spain. The objective of this thesis is to provide a more balanced view of the poet’s use of
memory in his early and mature poetry. Rather than limiting his concept of
memory to nostalgia for his youth or his homeland, it argues that he deploys
memory as an instrument of self-analysis, self-discovery and self-criticism. The first chapter concentrates on his pre-exilic poetry in order to show that
memory plays a fundamental role in his poetics prior to the experience of physical
exile. The central body of the thesis examines the increasingly analytical and philosophical role played by
memory in a selection of his mature prose and verse texts written outwith Spain.

▼ This portfolio of poems, prose poems and short fiction pieces is quasi-autobiographical and tracks the trajectory of my life, from childhood in Cape Town (‘pre-exilic’) to emigration abroad (‘exilic’) and return to Cape Town in late middle age (‘post-exilic’). Themes explored include the deceptive nature of
memory and the risk of imbuing a childhood recollected in later life with affective or narrative nostalgia; the psychologically dislocating nature of
exile on personal identity and notions of home; and Cape Town as both an imaginary construct and a multi-layered reality: specifically, ‘my’ Cape Town – now as well as half a century ago – and ‘other’ Cape Towns, reflecting a diversity of highly unequal experiences within this city. The dominant mode of expression chosen to explore these largely personal themes is confessional.

This research work brings to light the itinerary of Patricio Guzmán, Chilean documentary filmmaker active since the sixties. With the help of an experimental and multidisciplinary approach, we are questioning the…

encontrava exilado. Então, do que se tratava, efetivamente, quando
ele escreveu essas palavras?
mutismo e a morte.

▼ Sand crabs (Anomura: Hippoidea) have evolved a "new" means of locomotion: they use their thoracic legs to dig into the sand instead of walking on the benthos as many other decapod crustaceans do. I examined digging by three sand crab species of two families, Blepharipoda occidentalis (Albuneidae), Lepidopa californica (Albuneidae) and Emerita analoga (Hippidae). There are several features common to both sand crab families, suggesting that digging has evolved only once in the sand crabs. The leg tip trajectories are similar, with leg 4 circling in the opposite direction to legs 2 and 3 when viewed from the side; contralateral legs tend to alternate; the "tail" (abdomen in albuneids; uropods in hippids) cycles at higher frequencies than the legs; and the interjoint coordination of a single given leg (e.g., leg 2) is similar in B. occidentalis and E. analoga. There are also features that distinguish the two families. During digging by the albuneids, serially homologous contralateral legs initially alternate, but switch midway through a digging episode to moving synchronously. In E. analoga, the legs 2 and 3 move in bilateral alternation throughout the dig, but the legs 4 can move in bilateral synchrony and a higher frequency than legs 2 and 3 (≈ the uropods' frequency). There are also some similarities between sand crab digging and walking by other decapods, suggesting the two behaviours may be homologous. The coordination of ipsilateral legs on one side of an animal is generally similar in digging and closely related walking species, and there are no obvious differences in the distal leg motor neurons in sand crabs and some walking species. Digging and walking differ in that there are rapid "tail" movements during digging but not walking, and that serially homologous digging legs are more specialised in their motor output than walking legs. The interjoint coordination of legs 2 and 3 resemble backward walking motor patterns by other decapods, whereas that of leg 4 is more similar to forward walking. This suggests that digging is an evolutionary mosaic, comprised of several modified ancestral locomotor behaviours (backward walking in legs 2 and 3, forward walking in leg 4, and tailflipping).

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The constant presence of animals is a defining characteristic of ancient epic, but one that is not often examined in its own right. The focus of this study is on Vergil’s use of animal imagery in the Aeneid. In doing so, it examines how he manipulated, adapted and introduced new animals to the epic repertoire that made his work stand apart from earlier Greek epics such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. In the initial stages of research 450 animal references were identified in the Aeneid. Because of the sheer number, these findings were narrowed down to a choice of seven types of animals—the snake, lion, deer, wolf, dove, eagle and owl—for an in-depth study. Thereafter a close reading was done of passages where these seven species feature, in conjunction with corresponding passages from Homer, to identify developments that Vergil had made. At the same time Aristotle’s Historia Animalium and Pliny’s Naturalis Historia were consulted in concert to reveal Greek and Roman beliefs about these seven animals. The accumulation of this evidence shows that not only are animals inextricably linked with the epic’s plot, but that there are clear innovations that Vergil made to the epic repertoire: 1) he presented greater insight into the emotions and thought processes of animals than his predecessors; 2) he frequently aligned his depiction of animal behaviour with those found in natural histories; 3) he used animals as a means of drawing attention to various conflicts, such as that between nature and civilisation, man and woman, and foreigner and native, and 4) he represented certain animals through a Roman lens, stressing their unique role in Roman mythology and superstition. By examining these four innovations, this thesis provides new insight into understanding not only the Aeneid but also the role that animals play in the epic.

The present work proposes to analyze the conditions of existence of the Goians in century XIX, focusing mainly on the regional construction of Goiás from the perspective of its nosological scenario, from the view of three foreign travelers with medical training. These are: George Gardner, Johann Emmanuel Pohl and Hugh Algernon Weddell, and in comparing these external visions with the regional gaze referenced by the Reports of Presidents of Province (1835-1853). The main objective is to map the diseases occurring in the region through travel reports, written in order to establish records about known regions. In addition, to perceive the respective diaries and the Reports of Presidents of Province, as sources of information, that confers fundamental elements for the construction of the regional identity with the intention of glimpsing how the society of the time dealt with its sick people. Therefore, this dissertation is located at the intersection between the studies of
History of Science and Medicine and the studies of Regional History.

▼ Through a study of the work of three important writers, this thesis engages with the traumatic memories of the second half of the twentieth century in Czechoslovakia in order to highlight the value of literature in widening critical understandings of the continuing legacy of this complex era, which was dominated by totalitarian regimes under the Communist governments which gained control after the upheaval of the Second World War. Whilst these years were not unilaterally traumatic, many lives were dramatically affected by border closures and by the experience of living under a regime that maintained control through methods including confiscation of property, surveillance, arbitrary imprisonment, show trials, and executions. Many of the stories of this era could not be published openly because of censorship, and the persecution of intellectuals led to a wave of emigration, during which a number of writers moved to France. Using theories of trauma, exile, illness, and of self and other, this thesis opens up a dialogue between the work of three writers who engage, albeit from very different perspectives, with this little-explored intersection between Czech and French. The first chapter explores Daniela Hodrová's translated Prague trilogy as a first-hand witness to her nation's dispossession and as a form of resistance to the deletion of memory. The second chapter considers the painful transgenerational legacy of the era as it plays out in the work of bilingual writer Jean-Gaspard Páleníček. Chapter Three considers the ways in which the Prague novels of established French author Sylvie Germain negotiate the fine line between an appropriation of the stories of the other and a moral responsibility to bear witness. By bringing these authors together for the first time and locating their work within French Studies, my work foregrounds the need for Western criticism to pay attention to other valuable voices who can contribute to our understandings of the traumatic experience that has shaped modern history.

▼ In this dissertation, I draw on memories inspired and heightened by compassionate interviews in order to produce a unifying narrative of interactions with family and friends prior to and following my exile from Cuba in 1960. I use autoethnography and narrative inquiry to understand how I made the decision to leave Cuba and the life I have lived in exile for almost sixty years. My dissertation focuses on what it means to live as a reluctant immigrant and how historically constituted power relations define the identity of many Cuban exiles. I discuss and contrast the politics of passion and the politics of affection. The politics of affection undermine the goals of the politics of passion; the moral imperative of what ought to be is not achieved and becomes an antecedent of the necessity to exile. The story I tell draws attention to memory, identity, displacement, the experience of ambiguous loss, the sadness of unfulfilled dreams of return, and the decision to live in exile as a survivor not a victim regardless of my disenchantment and resistance to the Castro Revolution.

▼ This study explores the multiple meanings of landscape and the creation of place within the Cuban Diaspora. Landscape encompasses not only the external physical environment or a particular geographical space, but the concept also represents
collections of personal experiences with, and memories linked to, various pieces of the physical environment. Diaspora is an association that is not restricted to a geographical place but formed by cultural nationalism shared by members of a
transnational community. The research sites in this study are Moultrie, Georgia, and Miami, Florida. These sites were selected to represent some of the diversity (e.g. rural/urban, established/newly arrived) inherent in the Cuban Diaspora. In light of
current scholarship on these themes and the issues facing members of the Cuban Diaspora today, the principal questions addressed in this study are: How are landscapes (re)created and given meaning at locations in the Cuban Diaspora? and How does the
context of migration or exile affect the (re)creation of landscapes? To address the research questions, an integrated set of mixed ethnographic methods comprised of participant observation, interviews, life history collection, cognitive mapping, and
archival research was used. Results show that the manner in which members of the Cuban Diaspora in the United States left Cuba indeed impacts their relationship with the island and how they experience Cubanidad, or Cubanness. Based on the data collected,
many members of the Diaspora who were jailed or otherwise persecuted in Cuba tend to shy away from addressing volatile issues, such as Cuban politics or religion, and choose instead to (re)create a private sense of Cubanidad. Others, who left the island
under less weighty circumstances, may more openly express their version of Cubanidad. While the former situation tends to confine Cubanidad to the home and to religious spaces, the latter leads to the (re)creation of a broader, more public Cuban
landscape, replete with architecture, businesses, language, food, music, and art that combine to reflect a collective sense of Cubanidad and a more highly visible version of Cuban identity in the U.S. The goal of the dissertation is to contribute a new
element to current anthropological research on the transnational experience by considering people’s connections to landscapes. Landscape is a particularly useful concept for studying the ways transnationalism is embodied as it represents a highly
personalized version of, and interaction with, one’s surroundings, including natural and built environments as well as the memories attached to those. The Cuban diaspora in the U.S. represents an especially interesting setting for research on
transnationalism since the U.S. has only recently begun to relax its long-standing travel restrictions that limit the frequency and duration of émigré’s return visits to the island, as well as Cuban residents’ visits to the U.S. Because of these
restrictions, transnationalism, and membership in the Diaspora community more generally, has…

Pedro Orgambide (1929/2003), Argentine writer,
was exiled to Mexico, where he lived for nine years. During his exile, among other works, he wrote El arrabal del mundo, which was the first volume of a trilogy entitled \"de la memoria\", published in 1983. This dissertation aims to analyze the identity representations within this novel regarding Argentinas independence process, whereas the author fictionalized his experiences, proposing his own version of Argentinas history and collective memory, through a narrative in a perceptible space and time. Divided in three chapters, this text addresses the questions about the novel, its caracterization and elements in relationship with Orgambide and the historiography, also addressing the parallel of the experience of being exiled and the authors writing process.

This research focuses on literature produced by Elisa Lispector, immigrant writer who deals with sensitivity and uniqueness with the problematic of exile as well as the incommunicado in her literary composition. The corpus chosen
for analysis is the novel No Exílio, first published in 1948. Considering the autobiographical traits constantly merged with the fiction in the novel, as pointed out by Nadia Battella Gotlib in text that is constitutes the unfinished and autobiographical work Retratos Antigos (2012), by Elisa Lispector, as well as the attempt to narrate Lispector family output a small village in Ukraine, where they lived, trying to escape the violence of the pogroms and the arrival into exile, i. e., in Brazil, in the early twentieth century. The very attempt to communicate this limit-experience and the pain of exile brings itself irrefutable testimonial traits, thus, in the wake of categories that problematize the modern world and its new conjucture permeated by disasters and traumas, seeking the support of Márcio Seligmann-Silva, especially of his studies in História, memória, literatura – o testemunho na era das catástrofes (2013), of Walter Benjamin in em A modernidade e os modernos (2000), of
Friedrich Nietzsche in Genealogia da Moral (2012) and of Julia Kristeva com Estrangeiros para nós mesmos (1994), as well as other studies and theorists who have contributed significantly to the development and enrichment of research.

I a.C. a I d.C.
