▼ A noticeable change in the structure of the Spanish pork sector has been observed in recent years. Pig farms have become more and more specialized and the size of their operations has been increasing. Moreover, modern pig farms have tended to integrate and coordinate their operations into Pork Supply Chain (PSC). Thus, the overall aim of this thesis was to formulate a set of models to support sow herd management and piglet production in a pork supply chain context, giving practical answers to relevant questions often asked by decision makers. Hence, the main strategic and tactical decisions regarding sow herds and piglet production management in a pork supply chain context were considered. Basically, four models under uncertainty were developed. The first one was a linear programming formulation of a semi-Markov model to design pig facilities. It showed that herd distribution based on physiological states and movements between facilities were useful to calculate the room needs for each sow facility. The formulation considers recent EU regulations regarding animal welfare and the impact on economic cost of housing facilities. Ongoing with animal welfare issues, a framework for the integration of clinical signs into a sow replacement model was developed. The sow replacement model used in the framework was a multi-level hierarchical Markov process using Bayesian updating. The results showed how the incorporation of clinical signs in sow replacement models led to better culling policies through more efficient detection of the weakest sows in the herd. The next two models formulated under finite time horizon showed the herd distribution or structure moving to the steady state. Temporary shocks in parameters or transitory perturbations were better represented by finite time horizon models where scenarios collected part of the uncertainty of the system. The use of Linear Programming led to incorporate herd constraints more easily than in a Markov Decision Process. Finally the two-stage stochastic programming model with recourse showed to be a suitable tool to deal with the uncertainty of the system through scenarios. Additional benefits for practical purpose were the scheduling of purchasing of gilts, planning piglet production and replacement policy, all under a rolling time horizon scheme. Nowadays, with the current structure of the sector, it is reasonable to think about models capable of solving more accurately problems involving two or more stages of the chain, and integrating them all together in some information system, in order to improve the management of the PSC. Hence the models presented in this thesis are suitable tools to deal with main strategic and tactical decisions in sow herds producing piglets in a general PSC context. The trees, hedgerows and woods are current configuration of the tree network in several ecological regions of the world. In Trás–os–Montes region, Northeast of Portugal, they are a traditional component of Terra fria landscape and they could be seen in several forms: scatter trees, fencerows, small woodlots, riparian buffer strips, among others. The extensive livestock systems in this region are based on a set of circuits across the landscape. In this practice, flocks interacts with these structures using them for different functions inducing an influence on the itineraries. Our purpose will be focused on the woody features of landscape regarding their configurations, abundance and spacial distribution; in order to examine how the grazing systems depends on the currency of these formations; particularly how species flocks behaviors are related on. Depending on spatial data, The investigation attain to compare the tree network within the agriculture matrix, to the grazed territory crossed by flocks. From the other side, the importance of spatial data on interpreting the issue by suggesting different parameter that may influence the circuits. The recognition of the pressure exerciced by the occurence of the woody structures on the grazed circuits is possible. We believe that the role of these woody structures features in supporting the tradicional silvopastoral systems has been sufficiently strong for change their distribution pattern.

Árvores, sebes e pequenos bosques são elementos recorrentes na configuraçãodas paisagens agrícolas. Em Trás–os–Montes, Nordeste de Portugal, estes são componentesimportantes da paisagem da Terra Fria, assumindo várias formas como árvores dispersas, cortinas arbóreas, matas, galerias ripícolas, entre outras. Por outro lado, os sistemas tradicionais de produção animal, nomeadamente no caso das raças autóctones de pequenos ruminantes, estãobaseados na exploração de um conjunto de circuitos de pastoreio utilizados pelos rebanhos. Nesta prática, os rebanhos interagem com essas estruturas arbóreas,usando–as para diferentesfins,e seleccionam os seus itinerários em função da sua distribuição. O objectivo deste trabalhocentra–se nestes componentes lenhosos da paisagem agrícola, com a sua particular configuração, abundância e distribuição espacial, a fim de averiguar a forma como os sistemas de pastoreio dependem de seus padrões, no caso particular, o comportamento dos rebanhos de ovinos e caprinos. Nesta investigação recorre–se à análise deinformação geográfica para comparar o território atravessado por rebanhos com a composição da matriz agrícola em termos da configuração das suas estruturas lenhosas. A interpretação dos resultados obtidos sugere que a sua ocorrência influencia os circuitos de pastoreio, identificando as estruturas podem condicionar os percursosdos rebanhos de ovelhas e cabras. ▼ This thesis is comprised of two studies examining the effects of price signal based herd size management strategies on profitability of cow-calf operations. Herd size management strategies were evaluated across the previous two cattle cycles, 1990-2014, using a fixed land resource and included a variety of production scenarios. These scenarios varied in terms of stocking rates, fertilizer applications rates, and calving season. Each scenario was also analyzed both with and without weather effects on forage production. Weather effects were simulated using a production index derived from satellite imagery across the observed 25-year period. Three herd size management strategies: i) constant herd size; ii) dollar cost averaging; and iii) price signal-based, anticipatory counter-cyclical expansion/contraction, were evaluated on the basis of net present value of cash operating profits as well as on the basis of risk in terms of range of yearly cash operating profit. This analysis revealed fall calving herds with increased forage production and hay sales through medium fertilizer application in conjunction with a counter-cyclical herd size strategy to be the profit-maximizing management choice regardless of inclusion/exclusion of weather effects or time period. However, a constant herd size strategy was shown to create little regret in terms of net present value of cash operating profit. The second study attempts to rank causal variables that drive the differences in profitability across herd size strategies as well as land use intensities revealed in the first study. Two techniques, linear regression and artificial neural networks (ANNs), were compared and contrasted on the basis of relative variable impact rankings as well as goodness-of-fit. This analysis showed cattle price and head sold to be the largest drivers of profitability across the study period. In addition, fall calving was reinforced as the profit-maximizing decision while optimal choices regarding fertilizer application and stocking rate were not apparent. While ANNs were shown to be superior in terms of goodness-of-fit, linear regression provided coefficients, which allowed for more meaningful examination of tradeoffs between calving seasons, stocking rates, and fertilizer rates. Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária

Atualmente, é evidente o maior interesse dos produtores de carne pelo maneio reprodutivo e gestão das suas vacadas, o que conduz a um aumento da procura de serviços médico-veterinários. A taxa de fertilidade é um indicador de eficiência reprodutiva, que pode ser influenciado por inúmeros fatores, devendo proceder-se à sua avaliação regular para deteção de eventuais situações de subfertilidade. Com esta dissertação, pretendeu-se avaliar a influência de diversos fatores de maneio na fertilidade, assim como, mostrar o trabalho que um veterinário de campo precisa de desenvolver em termos gestão de dados reprodutivos. Foi também proposto um plano de intervenção para explorações com baixa fertilidade, adaptado à realidade do campo, contendo várias sugestões que podem auxiliar médicos-veterinários e produtores na gestão adequada das suas vacadas. Devido a limitações a nível do número de explorações e do período de tempo decorrido para comparação de valores, não foi possível obter resultados conclusivos acerca da influência das diferentes práticas de maneio na fertilidade. Contudo, com a análise de vários parâmetros, concluiu-se que alguns dos proprietários das explorações com baixa fertilidade procuraram iniciar uma assistência médico-veterinária mais regular, no sentido de melhorar o desempenho reprodutivo das suas vacadas. Constatou-se ainda, que, quando a condição corporal ultrapassa a pontuação 8, ocorre um aumento significativo do intervalo entre partos, o que comprova que a manutenção de vacas com condições corporais elevadas pode ser prejudicial. Por outro lado, no plano de intervenção proposto, apesar da natureza multifatorial da fertilidade, procurou dar-se destaque ao maneio alimentar, devido à forte relação existente entre a condição corporal e os índices reprodutivos. Dada a desvalorização da gestão reprodutiva, é fundamental alertar os produtores para a sua importância. Só desta forma é que será possível ter uma perceção real dos valores de fertilidade, o que irá possibilitar a escolha e implementação de práticas de maneio adequadas ao sucesso reprodutivo.

ABSTRACT - THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS MANAGEMENT FACTORS ON THE ANUAL FERTILITY ON BEEF CATTLE ON THE PORTUGUESE SOUTHERN REGION - Today the increasing importance given to the reproductive management of the herd by the beef cattle producers, is obvious. This is leading to a bigger demand for veterinary services. Fertility rate is one reproductive efficiency indicator which can be influenced by a various number of factors and a regular evaluation of the herd is crucial to detect cases of subfertility. With this work, it is pretended to evaluate the influence of those different factors on fertility, as well as to show that the work of a field veterinary in the development and management of reproductive data is essential. Pourtant, les schémas de sélection actuels en bovins laitiers considèrent que les meilleurs reproducteurs sont les mêmes quel que soit le type de système d'élevage, c'est-à-dire qu'il n'existe pas d'interactions Génotype*Milieu. L'objectif de cette thèse est de mesurer les interactions Génotype*Milieu en France sur les caractères laitiers et fonctionnels dans les 3 races bovines laitières principales (Normande, Montbéliarde, Holstein).Un point crucial dans ce type d'étude est la façon de définir le milieu. L'innovation de cette thèse est l'utilisation des profils Troupeau-Jour de Contrôle. Ce sont des coproduits du modèle génétique basé sur les contrôles élémentaires. Ils reflètent la production permise par la conduite de troupeau au cours du temps. Ils présentent l'avantage d'être disponibles à partir des bases de données nationales et d'être uniquement le reflet de la conduite, contrairement à d'autres définitions qui mêlent effet génétique et effet d'environnement au sein de la définition du milieu ou qui se focalisent sur certains points précis de la conduite sans prendre en compte son effet global. La description des profils Troupeau-Jour de Contrôle de plus de 15000 élevages normands, montbéliards et holsteins par des méthodes de lissage de séries temporelles, d'analyses factorielles et de classification a permis de créer 2 définitions du milieu en vue de l'étude des interactions Génotype*Milieu : des milieux définis comme des groupes d'élevages aux conduites distinctes ou un milieu défini comme un continuum à travers une ou des variables synthétiques.L'importance des interactions Génotype*Milieu a été estimées à partir de 2 types de modèles : un modèle multicaractères qui valorise la définition du milieu sous forme de groupes d'élevages et un modèle de norme de réaction qui valorise, quant à lui, le milieu défini comme un continuum. Les avancées méthodologiques proposées dans cette thèse concernent les modèles de normes de réaction. Des approches permettant de prendre en compte plusieurs variables d'environnement au sein d'un même modèle et de les résumer au sein d'une matrice génétique de rang réduit sont mises en avant.Aucun reclassement n'a été mis en évidence : les meilleurs reproducteurs sont les mêmes quel que soit le système d'élevage. Les schémas des sélections actuels sont donc performants. Il existe tout de même une interaction Génotype*Milieu significative sous forme d'effet d'échelle : la variabilité des valeurs génétiques des animaux est plus importante dans les systèmes d'élevage plus intensifs. Cet effet d'échelle ne sera pas pris en compte dans les modèles d'évaluation génétique, en revanche, il est possible d'imaginer un indicateur utilisable sur le terrain pour mesurer les écarts de performances, dus à cet effet, auxquels il faut s'attendre.

▼ The aim of this paper consists in investigating more closely the development of the body condition of dairy cows and heifers within the dry period or respectively the preparation period by the repeated, ultrasonographic measurement of the back fat thickness. For this 445 Holstein cows and 81 heifers from a major East German dairy cattle farm were examined at weekly intervals for the duration of the drying off or respectively of the preparation. Furthermore the recorded condition data were juxtaposed with the parameters of milk yield, fertility and animal health in the first lactation trimester. In addition the effects of a targeted condition correction were observed within the drying off of a group of cows. The body condition for the drying of the cows should amount to 20-25 mm of back fat thickness and be maintained approximately constant during the dry period. The duration of the dry period for dairy cows should be no longer than 50 days and the preparation period for cows and heifers no longer than 21 days. In the herd investigated the dry period fluctuated considerably and averaged 65 days. The preparation period for the cows averaged 22 days and for the heifers averaged 33 days. The proportion of animals below condition for the drying off was 44.2 % and rose to 57.0 % at the beginning of the preparation period. This development shows the inadequate energy supply in the early dry period. At the beginning of the preparation period the body condition of the cows rose slightly and in the last week befor calving the onset of the antepartal lipomobilisation was identifiable. After calving the fat mobilisation grew pronounced as expected. The change in the back fat thickness in this period investigated indicates a problem in the energy supply in the early dry period. The younger animals especially are not in a position to build up their fat reserves adequately by the end of the first lactation. Like the cows the heifers examined during the preparation period also exhibited a body condition sometimes far below the recommendations. From the results it becomes clear that condition problems can occur very specifically for the individual herd. On the basis of the current situation, the time and animal group are to be individually identified for problem-oriented body condition monitoring. The investigations carried out have shown that the assessment of body condition in the management of herds of dairy cows can provide important information on deficits in the energy supply to the animals at specific rearing stages. It is thus possible to activate the cows’ unused output reserves or also to recognise early the emergence of health risks in individual animals or groups of animals. In order to implement the body condition recommendations on drying off, a check on the body condition is necessary in the last lactation trimester. At-risk animals should be identified using specific characteristic figures (duration of lactation, probable calving date, milk output, age, condition state) and suitable measures be taken in good time. En France, la lutte collective contre la tuberculose bovine à partir de 1965 a permis d’obtenir en 2000 le statut officiellement indemne. En parallèle de cette évolution, plusieurs schémas de prophylaxie ont été appliqués et le cheptel bovin français a connu une évolution dans sa structure démographique et dans les pratiques de sa gestion. L’objectif principal de cette thèse était d’étudier la relation entre ces trois évolutions parallèles. Deux approches ont été utilisées : l’analyse d’une série de données longue et la modélisation mécaniste de la tuberculose bovine. L’analyse d’une série de données longue, grâce à un modèle spatio-Temporel hiérarchique Bayésien, nous a permis de mettre en évidence, en plus de l’effet de schéma de prophylaxie, l’impact des structures et pratiques d’élevage sur le taux d’incidence de la maladie au niveau départemental. Quatre facteurs de risque ont ainsi pu être identifiés : l’augmentation de la taille et de la densité des élevages, la proportion plus importante de vaches laitières, et la part de la surface agricole utile occupée par les pâtures. Ces variables sont liées à la professionnalisation et à la spécialisation des élevages bovins en France.La modélisation mécaniste, fondée sur un modèle stochastique compartimental, nous a montré que les pratiques d’élevage ont un effet sur la dynamique de transmission intra-Élevage de la tuberculose bovine : la médiane estimée de paramètre de transmission de l’infection durant la période de stabulation était 5 fois plus élevée que durant la période de pâturage. De plus, ce modèle a permis de montrer que les changements des structures et pratiques d’élevage avaient un poids important sur le risque de transmission entre élevages, au pâturage, par rapport aux changements de schémas de prophylaxie. Une expérimentation ex-Ante fondée sur le modèle a montré qu’environ un quart des variations du risque de transmission inter-Élevages au pâturage étaient expliquées par les changements des pratiques d’élevage contre un dixième par les changements de schémas de prophylaxie. Ce résultat suggère que l’éradication de la maladie en France est sans doute plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît.

In France, the collective control of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) from 1965 allowed France to obtain in 2000 the bTB-Free status. In parallel to this evolution, several control programs have been applied and cattle population has changed in its demographic structure and herd management practices. The main objective of this thesis was to study the relationship between these three parallel evolutions. ▼ Staphylococcus aureus (Staph.aureus) is the most common contagious pathogen causing intramammary infections (IMI) in cows worldwide. Although practices to control this organism have been advocated for decades, identification of risk factors is crucial in prevention and control of Staph.aureus. The objectives for Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 were to estimate prevalence of Staph.aureus in Ohio dairies and to determine the association of management practices with isolation of Staph.aureus in bulk tank milk (BTM). Questionnaire about herd characteristics, milking procedures, udder health/mastitis control, biosecurity and calf/heifer raising practices were mailed to 780 dairy producers, with a response rate of 49.2%. Staph.aureus prevalence was 48%, 64% and 69% when considering one, two or three BTM samples. Herds with somatic cell count lower than 150,000 cells/mL and milking routine practices such as pre-stripping, pre- and post-dipping and use of single towels per cow were associated with reduced detection of Staph.aureus. Dry-off practices such as abrupt cessation of milking, use of internal teat sealant or blanket dry treatment were associated with herd size. In addition to the presence of Staph.aureus in the infected udder and milk, the cow can also be colonized with the organism on body sites. The objective of the Chapter 4 was to assess the role of teat skin colonization by Staph. aureus in Staph.aureus IMI by evaluating genetic relatedness of Staph.aureus isolates from milk and teat skin of dairy cows using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and characterizing the isolates based on the carriage of virulence genes. Cows in four known Staph.aureus positive herds were sampled and was found that quarters with teat skin colonized with Staph.aureus were almost five times more likely to be diagnosed with Staph.aureus IMI than quarters not colonized on teat skin. Three main clusters (A, B, C) were identified with PFGE using a cutoff at 80% similarity. All clusters contained both milk and teat skin isolates with 72% of isolates belonging to cluster B. Forty-two virulence factors were screened using PCR and presence of clfA, clfB genes may have contributed to the ability of certain isolates to become the predominant strain. The aim of the study in Chapter 5 was to estimate antimicrobial resistance in Staph.aureus and to determine presence of methicillin-resistant Staph.aureus (MRSA) in Ohio dairy BTM. Staph.aureus isolates for this study were those previously described in Chapters 2. Isolates were tested for antimicrobial resistance by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion and MRSA confirmation was done by a duplex PCR using femB and mecA genes. MecA was detected in two Staph.aureus isolates from a single farm (herd prevalence = 0.95%), collected at different time. Both isolates appeared highly clonal and belonged to SCC type IV, spa type t021, USA200. These results confirm the presence in low prevalence of BTM MRSA in US dairies. ▼ The many species of larkspur (Delphinium spp. L.) are among the most dangerous poisonous plants on rangelands in the western United States, causing death losses estimated at 2-5% (up to 15%) per year for cattle grazing in larkspur habitat. Research has estimated the value of these losses at $234 million per year. Other effects, such as altered grazing management practices and consequent lost forage quantity and quality, are significant but poorly understood. Current best management practice recommendations stress seasonal avoidance of pastures with larkspur present, with little evidence that this is practical or ultimately effective. Alternative approaches to addressing this complex challenge are difficult to design, test, and apply due to the threat of dead livestock. In this dissertation I explore an alternative approach based on the idea that it may be possible to manage cattle grazing such that no individual consumes a lethal dose, regardless of timing of grazing or larkspur density. This idea was inspired by producers past and present who have reported such success. I examine this hypothesis using agent-based models and a field experiment with Geyer's larkspur (D. geyeri Greene), the focal species throughout this research. Chapter 2 presents a conceptual model that situates this work within the broader context of livestock grazing management and rangeland science. This synthesis also highlights the potential for conceptual models to aid in the design, application, communication, and consilience of research in rangelands. Drawing on a wide range of work, this model challenges the discipline of rangeland science to integrate a broader array of methods and epistemologies to create knowledge sufficient to the complexity of the systems under study. Agent-based models (ABMs) provide an effective method of testing alternate management strategies without risk to livestock. ABMs are especially useful for modeling complex systems such as livestock grazing management and allow for realistic bottom-up encoding of cattle behavior. In Chapter 3, I introduce a spatially-explicit, behavior-based ABM of cattle grazing in a pasture with a dangerous amount of D. geyeri. This model tests the role of herd cohesion and stocking density in larkspur intake, finds that both are key drivers of larkspur-induced toxicosis, and indicates that alteration of these factors within realistic bounds can mitigate risk. Crucially, the model points to herd cohesion, which has received little attention in the discipline, as playing an important role in reducing lethal acute toxicosis. As the first agent-based model to simulate grazing behavior at realistic scales, this study also demonstrates the tremendous potential of ABMs to illuminate grazing management dynamics, including fundamental aspects of livestock behavior amidst ecological heterogeneity. ▼ Two computer simulation models were developed to predict the effects of manipulating dairy cow reproduction on the productivity and profitability of dairy herds which graze pasture. The first computer model predicted calving patterns of herds, and after testing its predictions, was used to assess the relative importance of different factors affecting reproduction of cows. The effects of initial calving pattern, oestrus detection efficiency, calving to first oestrus interval distribution, conception rate, and drugs which modify the oestrous cycle of cows were predicted and their influence on the profitability of achieving a six week calving pattern estimated. The model indicated that the calving pattern of a herd and the achievement and maintenance of efficient oestrus detection were probably the two most important factors affecting profitability. Increasing conception rate through the use of new technologies provided the greatest potential for increasing the profitability of achieving such a pattern. The second computer model, which was called “UDDER”, predicted the milk production of herds with different calving patterns. Because many factors interact to determine milk production, UDDER was developed to account for variables such as pasture growth, stocking rate, supplementary feeding, grazing management, and fodder conservation. To predict milk production, models were developed to stimulate the utilisation of energy within the dairy cow, estimate the intake of cows pasture, and predict the accumulation and quality of pasture on farms at different times of the year. Experimental data were analysed to derive some relationship for these models, and others were obtained directly from the literature. An experiment was conducted on three commercial dairy farms to collect data which could be used to test the accuracy of UDDER. The results indicated that the program was capable of predicting the butterfat production of dairy herds to within 5% of actual measurements. UDDER was then used to evaluate different management options on these farms. The investigation highlighted that the result of a single chance in management depends on all other variables which interact within the farm system. For example, the change in farm income which occurs when calving pattern is modified depends on stocking rate, pattern of pasture production, drying off strategy, level of supplementary feeding, and milk pricing system. Because of the complex interactions which may occur, it is unwise to make general statements about farm management. Accurate advice can probably only be given at the individual farm level where the interactions can be accounted for and this would be very difficult without a computer model of some sort. ▼ Mastitis is the most common and costly production disease affecting dairy cows. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis are two major mastitis-causing pathogens. Staphylococcus aureus is traditionally classified as contagious pathogen, while Streptococcus uberis is classified as environmental pathogen. Infected udders form the main reservoir of contagious pathogens. Exposure to contagious pathogens is largely limited to the milking process. Environmental pathogens are present in the environment of the cow. Cows may be exposed at any time in life. We used a combination of molecular and mathematical methods to study whether S. aureus and S. uberis are indeed contagious and environmental pathogens, respectively. Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis and binary typing were used for strain typing of S. aureus and had higher typeability and discriminatory power than phage typing. Comparison of clinical and epidemiological observations with typing results revealed significant associations between distinct genotypes and severity of disease, suggesting strain-specific virulence. Analysis of human and bovine S. aureus isolates showed that strains clustered predominantly in host specific clones. Circumstantial evidence suggested an environmental origin of one S. aureus strain. Teat skin did not appear to be an important source of intramammary S. aureus. Random-amplified polymorphic DNA typing was used to characterize S. uberis strains. Within two herds, a variety of strains were found in addition to a predominant strain, suggesting co-existence of strains with environmental and contagious epidemiologies. Infections with dominant strains lasted longer than infections with unique strains. One dominant strain caused an outbreak of mastitis that was limited to lactating cows. The strain was also isolated from the milking machine. The combined evidence strongly supports contagious transmission during milking. SIR-models were used to describe the spread of mastitis and simulate the impact of control measures. Prevalence of infection was a significant predictor for the number of new infections with S. uberis in one herd, as would be expected under the assumption of contagious transmission. Presence of other pathogens did not affect the susceptibility of udder quarters to new infection, but quarters that had recovered from infection were more susceptible than quarters that had not experienced mastitis. The same was true for S. aureus, as shown in a study of cow and quarter-level risk factors for new infections and by means of an SIR-model. Treatment of subclinical mastitis and prevention of influx of infected animals contribute to elimination of S. aureus mastitis from a herd under the assumption that S. aureus is spread solely through contagious transmission. However, even when R, the reproduction ratio, was lower than the threshold value of 1, indicating that contagious transmission was curbed, new infections continued to occur. La vie en collectivité confère de nombreux avantages, mais aussi des inconvénients avec lesquels l’animal doit s’accommoder. Afin de maintenir la cohésion sociale, les membres d’un groupe doivent donc faire des compromis et résoudre rapidement les conflits d’intérêts. Comprendre comment les individus arrivent à des décisions communes et optimales permet d’en savoir plus sur l’organisation sociale, les patterns de mouvements et l’utilisation de l’habitat de l’espèce. En retour, ces informations sont essentielles au développement de nouvelles stratégies de gestion. Dans ce contexte, je me suis intéressée à la vie de groupe et aux déplacements collectifs chez le bison d’Europe, espèce expérimentant son grand retour sur son continent d’origine. Mes travaux ont pu mettre en évidence que (1) les liens matrilinéaires étaient au cœur de la vie sociale de l’espèce, (2) le bison européen, contrairement à l’idée populaire, était loin d’être un animal strictement forestier et (3) les déplacements de groupe étaient préférentiellement menés par les femelles dominantes les plus âgées et ayant un veau à leur charge. La prise en compte de ces résultats pourrait grandement améliorer la réintroduction et la gestion des populations de bisons et permettre, par là même, une meilleure cohabitation avec l’Homme.

Community life gives many advantages, but also disadvantages with which animal must accommodate. In order to maintain social cohesion, group members must therefore make compromise and resolve quickly conflicts of interest. Understanding how individuals reach common and optimal decisions helps to learn more about the social organization, movement patterns and habitat use of the species. In return, this information is essential to the development of new management strategies. In this context, I was interested in group life and collective movements of the European bison, species which experiencing its great come back on its continent of origin. My works have shown that (1) matrilineal ties were at the core of the species’ social life, (2) the European bison, contrary to popular opinion, was far from a strictly forest animal and (3) group movements were preferentially lead by the oldest dominant females which had a calf. Taking into account these results could be greatly improve the reintroduction and management of bison populations and, thereby, allow a better cohabitation with humans.

▼ In Somalia, camel (Camelus dromedarius) survivability and milk production has been higher than for other domestic livestock and contributes substantially to the subsistence of Somali pastoralists. The objective of this research was to study management, foraging behavior and nutrition of camels in their natural habitat to determine how production continues under seasonal nutritional stress. Management systems of Ceeldheer pastoralists are based on available natural pasture and water. The natural rotation grazing system maintained an ecological equilibrium in the District. Pastoralists manipulate their herds to suit existing environmental conditions, family needs and labor availability for herding. In herd management, control of breeding males and preferential treatment to increase the female component of the herd are geared to secure continuous milk supply for the family. Camels were watered only in the dry seasons. They foraged continuously throughout the day the first few days after watering, but foraged mostly in the morning and evening as watering days approached. The quantity of water camels consumed in summer and winter dry seasons were similar. In winter, milking camels foraged more, travelled shorter distance and rested less than dry ones. In fall, 1986, and spring, 1987, lactating camels spent less time foraging than non-milking animals. Foraging time was the same for both groups in summer 1986, 1987 and fall, 1987. Camels spent more time chewing bones in summer of 1986 in Xarar foraging area than other seasons. Low or high relative humidity together with hot temperature apparently reduced foraging time, increased rumination and idling times in winter and spring seasons. As forage availability declined, camels ingested a broader array of dietary items in the dry seasons and consumed large amounts of herbaceous plants. The diets of milking and dry camels were similar. Lactating camels consumed more green forage than dry camels in the dry seasons. Shrubs and trees comprised major components of the diets (80.9%). Physical structures of plant species did not prevent feeding on the plants. Camel diets were rich in crude protein (cp), calcium (Ca), potassiuim and sodium. Phosphorus (P) was deficient. Ca:P ratios were extremely low. Neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent lignin were high. CP intake seemed adequate year round assuming camel protein requirements are similar to other livestock requirements. Digestible energy was deficient in dry seasons. Low energy intake, inadequate phosphorous availability and water deprivation were probably responsible for the weight loss of camels as the dry season progressed. ▼ Mastitis is the most common and costly production disease affecting dairy cows. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis are two major mastitis-causing pathogens. Staphylococcus aureus is traditionally classified as contagious pathogen, while Streptococcus uberis is classified as environmental pathogen. Infected udders form the main reservoir of contagious pathogens. Exposure to contagious pathogens is largely limited to the milking process. Environmental pathogens are present in the environment of the cow. Cows may be exposed at any time in life. We used a combination of molecular and mathematical methods to study whether S. aureus and S. uberis are indeed contagious and environmental pathogens, respectively. Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis and binary typing were used for strain typing of S. aureus and had higher typeability and discriminatory power than phage typing. Comparison of clinical and epidemiological observations with typing results revealed significant associations between distinct genotypes and severity of disease, suggesting strain-specific virulence. Analysis of human and bovine S. aureus isolates showed that strains clustered predominantly in host specific clones. Circumstantial evidence suggested an environmental origin of one S. aureus strain. Teat skin did not appear to be an important source of intramammary S. aureus. Random-amplified polymorphic DNA typing was used to characterize S. uberis strains. Within two herds, a variety of strains were found in addition to a predominant strain, suggesting co-existence of strains with environmental and contagious epidemiologies. Infections with dominant strains lasted longer than infections with unique strains. One dominant strain caused an outbreak of mastitis that was limited to lactating cows. The strain was also isolated from the milking machine. The combined evidence strongly supports contagious transmission during milking. SIR-models were used to describe the spread of mastitis and simulate the impact of control measures. Prevalence of infection was a significant predictor for the number of new infections with S. uberis in one herd, as would be expected under the assumption of contagious transmission. Presence of other pathogens did not affect the susceptibility of udder quarters to new infection, but quarters that had recovered from infection were more susceptible than quarters that had not experienced mastitis. The same was true for S. aureus, as shown in a study of cow and quarter-level risk factors for new infections and by means of an SIR-model. Treatment of subclinical mastitis and prevention of influx of infected animals contribute to elimination of S. aureus mastitis from a herd under the assumption that S. aureus is spread solely through contagious transmission. Le sujet de la « trajectoire ex-post des Buyouts européennes » est assez vaste, c’est pour cela que nous avons essayé de l’étudier et de l’analyser à travers des perspectives différentes et en utilisant différentes méthodes quantitatives.Au cours de notre étude nous utilisons à la fois des mesures objectifves et perceptuelles pour établir les performances de ces entreprises et pour trouver les raisons pour lesquelles elles ont une meilleure performance. Ce recueil d’essais aborde ces problématiques, assez reliées les unes avec les autres, qui concernent la performance ex-post des sociétés européennes qui ont subi un procès de privatisation de leur capital avec des transactions qui les font passer du domaine publique au domaine privé (PTP). Les trois premiers essais concernent leurs performances économiques ; et les relations de leurs performances financières avec : l'évaluation de l'innovation ; l'application des techniques de gestion comme l’organisation apprenante (LO) ; et la mise en œuvre de la Responsabilité Social des Entreprises (RSE). Le comportement du marché dans quatre pays européens pendant le même période est également étudié dans le quatrième essai. This dissertation, takes the form of four essays. It presents an analysis of the ex-post performance of the European companies that have gone private. “Ex-post journey of the European Buyouts” is a broad topic, which we tried to investigate and analyze through different perspectives using different quantitative methods.We have used both objective and perception based measures to dig out the performance and reach out the possible reasons behind their better performance. This collection of essays addresses the research questions, which are much related to each other, concerning the ex-post performance of European companies after public-to-private (PTP) transactions. The first three essays concern their economic performance, and linkage of their financial performance with: the assessment of innovation and application of management techniques like Learning Organization (LO), implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The market behaviour in the Four European countries during the similar period is also investigated in the fourth essay. ▼ The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation between indicators of energy balance and postpartum reproductive functions in case of high yielding dairy cows, with special attention to the re-initiation of the cyclic ovarian function during the first 100 days after calving. The investigations were accomplished during the course of one year on 361 high performace dairy cows of German Holstein breed (black and coloured skin). The average 305-day-yield amounted to 10091 kg. As indicators of the energy balance the body mass index (BMI), the body condition score (BCS) and the back fat thickness (BFT) were selected. Additionally protein, fat and urea concentrations in the milk were also determined. The reproductive performance of the animals was established on the basis of data on oestrus, progesterone concentration in milk and fertility characteristics such as rest period, intercalving period, delayed period, pregnancy rate after first A.I. and insemination index. In order to establish a possible relationship of leptin to the energy balance and the re-initiation of ovarian cycle post-partum, the leptin concentration in the blood plasma was determined in 24 selected animals. The milk fat content of first milk yield control averaged 4.8 % and the protein content of the 100-day-yield averaged 3.2 %. The fat-protein- quotient (FPQ) at the onset of lactation stood at 1.5. The back fat thickness values of the animals of the herd were clearly below the reference curve of STAUFENBIEL and SCHROEDER (2004). In 38.4 % of the cases, the results of the visual oestrous control were in accordance with the results of the milk progesterone concentration. More ovarian cycles could be captured with the help of the progesterone analysis than with the visual oestrus control. In 17.7 % of the experimental animals a first progesterone increase was determined after more than 50 days post partum. However, in only 51.2 % of the experimental animals the first progesterone rise occurred within the first 45 days p.p. which was also followed by regular cycles. All other animals showed disturbances of the ovarian cycle. Animals with comparatively high milk protein content during the 100-day-performance showed an earlier onset of the cyclic ovarian function with few disturbances of the ovarian cycle than animals with low protein content. Frequent disturbances of the cyclic ovarian function and a delayed onset of ovarian cycle post partum were observed in cows yielding >12000 kg milk as compared to animals with < 8000 kg milk production. In the presented study a correlation between indicators of the energy balance and the interval from calving up to the first ovarian activity could be observed. ▼ Today the use of computer software by taking care of dairy herds is nearly unavoidable. In this dissertation are used the three programs VETHM, BOVI- CONCEPT and HERDE2, which are very helpful to find out the situation of fertility in a dairy cattle farm in Brandenburg. While this analysis there are grasp and fill data with the help of both programs VETHM and BOVI-CONCEPT. The reason for the bad conception rate of the herds you will find in the quality of insemination and control of repeat breeder. In the use of the central grasp data for the program HERDE2 it has been showing quickly the issue, that data are not completely. That makes it impossible to analyse the situation of fertility in this example farm. It would be a good alternative to use this data than to work hard on your computer with grasping the whole data like both of the other programs (VETHM and BOVI-CONCEPT). By comparsion of the three programs it has been always showed, that there are used different synonyms for the same sexual health parameters. this fact may be a problem by understanding both veterinarian and farmer and it restricts the acceptance of such programs in practice. The evaluations should be in a combination form of striking numbers and graphics with a good statement. This was best realized by BOVI-CONCEPT. Near by the size of the evaluation points should be as less as possible. You should not give up of important parameters like calving to first service interval, calving to conception interval, first service to conception interval, services per conception, conception rate to first service, proportion of pregnancies per bred cows, heat intervals and breeding intervals. Further statistical analysis have to use with special programs. Make sure, that the option of such using with summarizing data are guaranteed. In conclusion the quality of the three programs is very helpful. Every program is a good instrument by working of veterinarian and it is recommend to use one of the analyzed programs. ▼ Over a thirteen month period, 1793 liver biopsies and blood samples from dairy cows during the first and third to fifth week of lactation were taken from seven different dairy farms in Sachsen and Thüringen. Liver biopsies were taken monthly from every single farm from up to ten dairy cows out of both stages of lactation. Additional to that on farm 2 liver biopsies were taken from up to ten dairy cows on a weekly basis. The liver fat content of the individual samples was estimated by the copper sulphate test. Liver biopsy samples of one investigation unit were pooled and the liver fat content of the pooled sample was estimated gravimetrically. The serum parameters β-hydroxy- butyric acid, bilirubin, phosphorus, ASAT, GLDH und γ-GT were determined in the laboratory. Dairy cows in the first week of lactation showed significantly (p<0,05) higher liver fat content than those in the third to fifth week of lactation. The liver fat content increased continuously from the time of calving until it reached its peak on the seventh day post partum. From the beginning of the third until the end of the fifth week, the liver fat content then decreased continuously. The average liver fat content in autumn was significantly (p<0,05) below the average liver fat content in winter and spring. Those animals who were in their third or a higher lactation showed a significant (p<0,05) higher liver fat content than those in their first or second lactation. Liver fat content could be correlated to the following measured serum parameters; ß-hydroxy-butyric acid (r=0,440), bilirubin (r=0,333), ASAT (r=0,246), GLDH (r=0,156) and γ-GT (r=0,182). Additionally, liver fat content could be correlated to the 100-day milk yield (r=0,145), the milk fat content (r=0,064), the milk protein content (r=-0,175), service interval (r=0,059) and intercalving period (r=0,069) revealed significant (p<0,05). For further analysis, the dairy cows were classified into three categories according to their liver fat content: low liver fat content 5-8,5%, moderate fatty liver 12-15,5% and massive fatty liver 19-29,5%. Within these categories significant (p<0,05) differences were statistically determined for the 100-day milk yield, the milk fat content, milk protein content and the service interval. Significantly (p<0,05) higher liver fat contents were shown in cows diseased with placental retention or ketosis. Animals with a massive or moderate fatty liver revealed a significantly (p<0,05) higher death rate. In all seven dairy farms the liver biopsy and the liver fat estimation were introduced in the herd management program without any concern for the farm management. Additional to that, the results provided helpful information for the farmers and had a positive influence on the evaluation of the herd. The liver fat estimation allowed a convincing evaluation of the milk yield, the reproductive performance, the disease process and the total loss on a dairy farm. ▼ Optimization of herd fertility and milk yields is of great interest in modern farming management. Therefore the body condition plays a very important role. The purpose of this study was to characterize relations of the body condition, especially during early lactation, and the fertility. As a result of evaluating the tendency of the energetic balance during this period, successful insemination can be increased. For this reason, backfat thickness (RFD) of milk cows have been measured from the point dry off to the day 150 post partum. Out of these measurements 651 complete data sets were compiled for statistical evaluation. The measured RFD data points were reduced to 8 characteristic parameters, which were related to milk yields and fertility. The statistical evaluations demonstrate that the body condition is strongly affected by age of the cow and the milk yield. The majority (87 %) of the tested animals conceived after overcoming the nadir of body condition. The nadir was reached at an average of 63 ± 25 days with a RFD of 13,11 ± 5,46 mm. In this group, younger animals generally remained on a lower level of body condition and milk yield than older group members. The remaining 13 % of the statistically recorded animals conceived before or around the nadir of body condition. These animals were in particular capable of combining a good fertility with good milk yields and revealed the broad biological variance of the individuals. These animals were surprisingly young. The nadir of body condition was reached at an average of 86 ± 19 days with RFD values of 8,66 ± 4,41 mm. Lactation started with a larger amount of body fat, which could be utilized for energetic adjustment. As a consequence, those animals passed through an extended negative energy level. The body condition around parturition and the increasing depletion of body fat during early lactation is predisposing for the following fertility period. Furthermore, a body condition of less than 9 mm RFD significantly increased the artificial insemination rate as well as the calving intervals. Likewise extended intervals for both insemination and calving were observed with increasing amounts of body fat losses. The first insemination usually took place at about 13 days after NEB. Meanwhile conception took place on an average of 58 days after crossing the conditional bottom. In addition, RZ and ZTZ are closely related (r = 0,35; p = 0,001). At this point, the body condition was always increased compared to the condition at nadir. High milk yields were mostly related to a lower body condition and a prolonged NEB and therefore to milk protein values. Concentrations below 3,20 % indicate energy deficiency. High-performing animals consumed all their energy deposits and were not able to recover completely until next lactation period. Monitoring of body condition of dairy herds is an appropriate management tool for economic performance-related improvement of the productivity.
