▼ The following experiment presented herein compared growth, physical activity, stress-related responses, and puberty attainment in
heifers reared on high- (HIDENS) or low-stocking densities (LOWDENS). Sixty Angus x Hereford
heifers were ranked by age and BW (210 ± 2 d and 220 ± 2 kg, respectively) on d 0, and assigned to: a) 1 of 3 drylot pens (10 × 14 m pens; 10
heifers/pen) resulting in a stocking density of 14 m²/heifer (HIDENS; n = 3), or b) 1 of 3 pastures (25-ha pastures; 10
heifers/pasture), resulting in a stocking density of 25,000 m²/heifer (LOWDENS; n = 3). Pastures utilized herein were harvested for hay prior to the beginning of this experiment, and negligible forage was available for grazing to LOWDENS
heifers throughout the experimental period (d 0 to 182).
Heifers received the same limit-fed diet during the experiment, which averaged (DM basis) 4.0 kg/heifer daily of alfalfa-grass hay and 3.0 kg/heifer daily of a corn-based concentrate. Heifer shrunk BW was recorded after 16 h of feed and water withdrawal on d -3 and d 183 for ADG calculation. On d 0,
heifers were fitted with a pedometer fixed behind their right shoulder. Each week during the experiment, pedometer results were recorded and blood samples were collected for puberty evaluation via plasma progesterone. Plasma samples collected on d 0, 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, 161, and 182 were also analyzed for concentrations of cortisol and IGF-I. On d 28, 102, and 175, blood samples were also collected for RNA isolation and analysis of heat shock protein (HSP) 70 and HSP72 mRNA expression. On d 0, 49, 98, 147, and 182, hair samples were collected from the tail switch for analysis of hair cortisol concentrations. No treatment effects were detected (P = 0.66) for heifer BW or ADG.
Heifers from LOWDENS had more (P < 0.01) steps/week compared with HIDENS.
Heifers from LOWDENS had greater (P = 0.05) mRNA expression of HSP72, and tended (P = 0.10) to have greater mRNA expression of HSP70 compared with HIDENS. Plasma concentrations of cortisol and IGF-I were often greater (P ≤ 0.05) in LOWDENS vs. HIDENS
heifers (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01). Hair cortisol concentrations were greater (P < 0.01) for HIDENS vs. LOWDENS
heifers beginning on d 98 (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01).
Heifers from HIDENS experienced delayed puberty attainment and had a lower (P < 0.01) proportion of pubertal
heifers on d 182 compared with LOWDENS (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01). In summary, HIDENS negatively impacted heifer stress-related and physiological responses, and delayed puberty attainment compared with LOWDENS.

▼ Several studies were undertaken to investigate the shedding and super-shedding (>104 cfu/g faeces) of Escherichia coli O157 by dairy heifers. E. coli O157 was detected from replacement heifers being raised and these heifers were monitored in longitudinal studies. These studies identified a vast range of the prevalence of shedding within the cohort over time (9.6 ¬– 94.3% during the longitudinal study) and a vast range in the levels of E. coli O157 shed by heifers. No patterns or trends could be identified in shedding at the herd level with no discernable associations between shedding levels beyond one week. The absence of patterns and associations in herd level shedding was further demonstrated by intensive, daily sampling periods, which also demonstrated the short duration of shedding and the variability within individuals. The level of shedding by individual heifers, specifically super-shedding, showed little association to herd level shedding. Super-shedding from individual heifers was sporadic with a large number of heifers (nearly half in the longitudinal study) identified as super-shedding at some point. This suggests that the identification of these ‘high risk’ animals and removal may not provide a practical solution to control E. coli O157 from cattle. Further analysis of these studies was undertaken to identify factors which may affect shedding at the herd level. Analysis showed a link between animal factors and shedding or super shedding; body score was associated with shedding and faecal consistency and hide cleanliness was associated with super-shedding. Warm and moist climate conditions were shown to be associated with higher levels of shedding and super-shedding which is expected to provide optimal conditions for bacterial growth and survival. These associations were also shown to be short term. The largest effects were associated with rainfall and these effects also lasted over the longest duration, which is likely associated with increased moisture in the environment following rainfall events and especially high rainfall events. Pasture growth was also associated with shedding, but the confounding effects of warm and wet conditions on pasture growth must be considered. The associations between many of these factors are difficult to disentangle: there are likely to be links between climate and pasture growth, pasture growth and faecal consistency, and faecal consistency and hide cleanliness. Which of these factors, or the compounded effects, actually affect E. coli O157 shedding is difficult to identify in field, observational studies. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis of isolates recovered from these heifers identified two very similar Xba1 pulsotypes with a change in the predominant type over time. This may indicate a single genetic event propagating in the population. However, the use of a second enzyme (Bln1) identified some differences between pulsotypes which were indistinguishable by Xba1 indicating the limitations of the method. Isolates recovered from cattle were also shown to be similar to…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sixty Bonsmara heifers (328 ± 3.9 kg) on planted pastures were used to evaluate the effect of two energy sources and three growth promoters on body weight gain. Two supplementary feeds with dried apple pulp (A) or maize (M) as main energy source were formulated on an iso-nutrient base. One of three different growth promoters was included in each energy supplement: placebo (no growth promoter, designated as Treatments Ap and Mp), ionofore (monensin, designated as Treatments Am and Mm) and essential oil extract (from oregano, designated as Treatments Ao and Mo). A fixed amount of the supplements was offered to the six treatment groups in a growth/finishing study on cultivated grass-legume pastures.
Animals were stratified according to initial weight in ten blocks and treatments were assigned randomly to animals in each block. The 66 day growth study was conducted during spring (Sepember to November, 2014) in the Western Cape Province of South Africa near Greyton. The cultivated pastures consisted of a perennial grass-legume mixture. A rotation grazing system was applied and animals were moved to new paddocks once a week. Based on falling plate meter readings, the heifers consumed a calculated mean amount of 4.48 ± 0.08 (SEM) kg DM/day over the entire experimental period. A fixed amount of 4 kg (“as is” basis) of the respective supplements were offered daily during the first 42 days, followed by 5 kg/day from 43 days until the end of the study (66 days). Animals were weighed bi-weekly and average daily gain (ADG) was calculated.
The mean ADG of the six treatment groups was 1.44 kg/day. No interactions occurred between the energy sources and growth promoters used in the concentrates and main effects were thus interpreted. The supplements that contained apple pulp as energy source resulted in a higher (P < 0.02) ADG (1.54 kg/day) than the maize containing supplements (1.33 kg/day). There were no differences between any of the growth promoters, with the placebo resulting in similar growth rates than monensin and oregano oil extract. Mean ADG values (kg/day) of the different growth promoter treatments were 1.44 (placebo), 1.49 (monensin) and 1.38 (oregano). All the heifers were slaughtered at the end of the trial. Carcass weight and dressing percentage did not differ between energy sources or growth promoters. The mean dressing percentage was 52.5%.
The mean income over feeding cost for the 66 day period of the three maize energy source treatments was R254.20/heifer, while that of the apple pulp treatments was R524.75/heifer. According to this study, concentrate supplements containing apple pulp as main energy source were economically more desirable than those containing maize as primary energy source.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sestig Bonsmaraverse (328 ± 3.9 kg) op aangeplante weiding is gebruik om die invloed van twee energiebronne en drie groeibevorderaars op massatoename te ondersoek. Twee supplemente met gedroogde appelpulp (A) of mielies (M) as hoofenergiebron is op ‘n isonutriëntbasis geformuleer.…

▼ The effect of supplementation of 3000 IU vitamin E on the concentration of vitamin E in blood and in the liver of
heifers around parturition was measured in this experiment. We were also interested in the relation between cholesterol and vitamin E in blood and the relation between vitamin E in blood and in the liver.
Starting 8 weeks prior to parturition until 8 weeks after parturition, 9
heifers were supplemented with vitamin E. Another group of 9
heifers were used as a control group. Both groups were held under the same conditions and were fed the same diet. Blood and liver samples were taken and the concentration of vitamin E (blood and liver), cholesterol (blood) and total protein (liver) were measured.
The results show that supplementation of 3000 IU of vitamin E increases the concentration of vitamin E in blood and in the liver. It shows that there is a strong correlation between the concentration of vitamin E in blood and in the liver (R2: 0,63; P < 0,01). Supplementation also leads to an increased transport capacity (cholesterol) of vitamin E in blood.
Supplementation of vitamin E increases the antioxidative capacity of blood and the liver. Supplementation might also reduce the risk for
heifers to get mastitis.

▼ This study was conducted to measure the intake; nutritive value and digestibility of peanut hay (<i>Arachis hypogaea L</i>.). Fourteen Holstein
heifers (BW= 408 plus/minus 32 kg; Age = 15.4 months plus/minus 0.5) were randomly allocated to two diets: peanut hay (PH) and corn silage (CS) adlibtum for 26 days. The PH consisted of 66:34 forage: concentrate (F:C) and CS diet contained 57:43 F:C ratio. Peanut hay at 91.8% DM contained 8% CP, 64% NDF, 51.9% ADF and 8 % ash. DMI and CP was not different across the treatment diets (P>0.05). NDF and ADF intake was different between the diets with PH being greater (P<0.01). Feed Efficiency using the feed to gain ratio was different across the diets (P<0.0001). Dry matter digestibility was 75.37% for CS diet and 68.53% for PH diet. Peanut hay basal diets formulated to contain low F:C ratio can increase growth in dairy
heifers.

uticaj prepartalne aplikacije propiltiouracila na endokrini i
metabolički status junica holštajn rase u kasnom graviditetu i
ranoj laktaciji. Ispitivanje je sprovedeno na ukupno 30 junica
holštajn rase, odabranih u visokom graviditetu. Obje grupe junica
su hranjene obrokom prilagođenim potrebama za graviditet, odnosno
laktaciju. Junice ogledne grupe su u cilju indukcije hipotireoze od
20. dana prije očekivanog teljenja do dana teljenja svakodnevno
peroralno tretirane sa 4 mg PTU/kg tjelesne mase, pomiješanog sa 25
ml maltoznog sirupa. Junice kontrolne grupe su svakodnevno primale
samo 25 ml maltoznog sirupa. Uzorci krvi uzeti su punkcijom v.
jugularis 20 dana prije očekivanog termina teljenja, 3 i 7 dana
kasnije, svakodnevno tokom pet dana prije i pet dana nakon
teljenja, a zatim 7., 15., 30. i 60. dana nakon teljenja. Uzorci
tkiva jetre uzeti su od svih junica perkutanom biopsijom 7. dana
prije očekivanog teljenja i 7. dana nakon teljenja. U svim uzetim
uzorcima krvi određene su koncentracije T4, T3, insulina i glukoze.
Na osnovu koncentracije insulina i glukoze izračunata je vrijednost
HOMA indeksa za sve periode uzorkovanja. U uzorcima uzetim 20.,
17., 13., 7. i 4. dana prije i 7., 30. i 60. dana nakon teljenja
određena je koncentracija IGF-I, a u uzorcima uzetim 20. i 7. dana
prije i 7. i 30. dana nakon teljenja relativna zastupljenost
IGFBP-2, IGFBP-3 i IGFBP-4. U uzorcima uzetim 20., 17., 13., 7., 4.
i 1. dana prije, i 1., 3., 5., 7., 15., 30. i 60. dana nakon
teljenja određene su koncentracije BHBA i ukupnog bilirubina. U
uzorcima uzetim 20., 17., 13., 7. i 4. dana prije, na dan teljenja,
kao i 3., 4., 7., 15., 30. i 60. dana nakon teljenja određene su
koncentracije ukupnih proteina i albumina. U uzetim uzorcima tkiva
koncentracije T4, T3, BHBA i aktivnosti DIO1 u tkivu jetre, te
statistički značajan porast koncentracije insulina, IGF-I i glukoze
u odnosu na junice kontrolne grupe...

Heifers from 10 to 12 months of age entered the University of Florida Feed Efficiency Facility (FEF) and received a diet high in forage to reflect a pasture-based diet. While in the FEF,
heifers were exposed to a 14-d adaptation period, followed by a 70-d data collection period that included data for residual feed intake (RFI) and feed to gain ratio. Weekly BW, BCS, and blood samples were collected. Attainment of puberty was determined by concentrations of progesterone. Antral follicle count was assessed in all
heifers on the first day of the breeding season using transrectal ultrasonography. Conception and pregnancy rates were determined after transrectal ultrasonography evaluating the presence of a viable conceptus. Our data revealed no differences in the mean age at puberty, pregnancy rates to AI, and overall pregnancy, ADG, FTG, RFI among breeds. An effect was detected between breed and DMI, BCS and BW, where Braford
heifers had a lower DMI, BW and BCS. Results indicated an effect of RFI group on ADG, FTG and DMI. Ranking
heifers into RFI groups did not affect pregnancy rates, and initial or final BW and BCS. However,
heifers in the Low RFI group attained puberty at a younger age than
heifers in the high RFI group. Therefore, more efficient
heifers attained puberty earlier compared to less efficient
heifers. ( en )

▼ Forty-eight heifers, of predominantly British breeding, were used to investigate the effects of Ractopamine (RAC) supplementation and ovariectomization (OVX) on feedlot performance, carcass yield and quality traits, and subprimal and
value-cut yields. Dressing percentage was higher (P < 0.01) in RAC-fed heifers than controls (CTL) and HCW, CCW, and REA tended (P < 0.10) to be increased by RAC feeding. Intact heifers had higher (P < 0.01) DP and larger (P = 0.05) REA and
tended to have higher (P = 0.09) bone maturity scores and lower (P = 0.09) YG than OVX heifers. The ribeye roll, shoulder clod, and gooseneck round were heavier (P < 0.05) and the tenderloin and knuckle tended (P < 0.10) to be heavier in RAC-fed
heifers compared to CTL. Conversely, OVX decreased (P = 0.04) the yield of the ribeye roll and tended (P = 0.06) to decrease the yields of the brisket and strip loin compared to INT heifers. The interaction of RAC supplementation and gender significantly
affected the value cuts shoulder top and top blade weights. These value cut weights were higher (P < 0.05) with RAC feeding in INT heifers, while weights were similar in OVX heifers.

▼ Objectives of this experiment were to compare rate and efficiency of gain, and conception rates of yearling
heifers supplemented with Cu, Zn and Mn as either methionine chelated trace mineral (CTM) or the same minerals in SO 4 form. The experimental design utilized 3 ranches, each having 2 replications per treatment with pen as the experimental unit for ADG, DMI and G:F. Heifer was the experimental unit for pregnancy rates. Ranch 1 contained 498 Angus
heifers, ranch 2, 236 Red Angus cross
heifers, and ranch 3, 1,742 Angus cross
heifers. All
heifers were fed silage based diets that contained approximately 13.5% CP, 64% TDN (DM basis) and had low levels of SO 4, Mo or Fe in feed or H 2O. Diets contained 24 ppm Cu, 70 ppm Zn and 64 ppm Mn. Supplements were fed for 181 d (Ranch 1), 149 d (Ranch 2) and 151 d (Ranch 3) prior to breeding.
Heifers were weighed at trial initiation (BW 270 kg ± 2.8), end of drylot feeding, at breeding and at pregnancy diagnosis. Ranch 1
heifers were bred by AI followed by natural service (45 d breeding), Ranch 2
heifers were bred by natural service (50 d breeding) and Ranch 3
heifers were bred by AI once. Pregnancy was determined via ultrasound. Ranch effects were significant (P < 0.001) for gain, ADG, G:F and overall pregnancy rate, but not for conception in the first 21 d. No ranch x treatment interactions were detected for any measurements (P e 0.47) and no differences (P e 0.46) were detected between treatments for total gain, ADG, G:F or the number of
heifers that conceived during the first 21 d on Ranches 1 or 2. Conception rate increased (P = 0.03) for CTM
heifers from ranch 3 with one AI breeding. Across ranches, conception rates during the first 21 d of breeding did not differ (P = 0.12) between treatments but overall pregnancy rate was greater (P = 0.05) for
heifers supplemented with CTM. Under the conditions of this experiment results suggest that supplementation with CTM contributed to greater pregnancy rates in
heifers.

▼ The objectives of these studies were to investigate the effects of feeding high-linoleic cracked safflower seeds on reproductive and performance outcomes in pubertal beef
heifers. Three experiments were conducted at Montana State University research facilities (Exp. 1, n = 48, BW = 370 ± 24.8 kg; Exp. 2, n = 40, BW = 396.5 ± 31.7 kg; Exp. 3, n = 63, BW = 404.4 ± 26.14 kg). Angus and Angus crossbred
heifers were stratified by BW and allocated randomly to the following experimental treatments; 1) fed 1.8 kg/d barley grain concentrate (Barley); or, 2) fed 1.8 kg/d of high linoleic cracked safflower seed (Safflower).
Heifers were fed 35 and 29 d, Exp. 1, Exp. 2 and 3. Following the feeding period,
heifers (Exp. 1 and 2) were artificially inseminated (AI) 12 h after the onset of estrus, and
heifers that did not show estrus were administered 25 mg of PGF 2 alpha and time AI. A 7-d CO-synch + CIDR and TAI protocol was used for
heifers in Exp. 3. Performance variables included initial and final BW, live wt gain, ADG, and DMI (Exp. 1 and 2). Biweekly blood samples were assayed for progesterone (P4) and PGF 2 alpha metabolites (PGFM) concentrations (Exp. 1). Estrus responses were observed using Estrotect tags,
heifers with progesterone (P4) < 1 ng/mL were not included in the calculation. Pregnancy rates were determined 40 d post breeding. Performance variables did not differ between barley and safflower treatments with the exception of DMI in Exp. 2.
Heifers supplemented with barley consumed 21% more (P < 0.001) DM per d than heifer fed safflower. In Exp. 1, overall pregnancy rates were greater in safflower supplemented
heifers than in barley supplemented
heifers (P = 0.036). Pooled PGFM concentrations differed by day (P < 0.05) in Exp. 1. Results suggest supplemental high linoleic safflower seed does not appear to influence estrus response or PGFM concentrations in pubertal beef
heifers.

▼ Much of the research on sodium butyrate (SB) has been conducted with pre-ruminant calves. Previous research with post-weaned calves was shown to be beneficial. The objective of this study was to compare sodium butyrate to monensin (MON) on the growth, digestibility, and health of post-weaned
heifers. Forty Holstein dairy
heifers with a mean age of 84.2 d ± 1.2 d (mean ± SD) and average body weight (BW) of 99.78 kg ± 10.77 (mean ± SD) were housed in a naturally ventilated freestall barn.
Heifers were blocked by birth date and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a completely randomized block design: (1) 100 g of soybean meal carrier (control; CON); (2) 0.75 g SB/kg of BW + carrier; (3) 1 mg monensin/kg of BW + carrier; (4) monensin + 0.75 g SB per kg of BW (MSB). Data were statistically analyzed using single degree of freedom contrasts evaluating CON vs. all other treatments; SB vs. MON; and SB and MON vs. MSB. Treatments were top-dressed and hand-mixed into a total mixed ration (TMR) once daily.
Heifers had free access to water. Amount of orts and feed offered to each heifer was measured daily. Feed and orts samples were frozen at -20°C for future analysis. Orts samples were taken daily and subsampled for later DM determination, while TMR samples were taken weekly and composited monthly for later DM and nutrient analysis. Initial BW, heart girth, paunch girth, and body length were measured before the start of the study and every week thereafter during the 12 wk trial (168 d old). Blood samples were obtained, and glucose and ketone concentrations were determined prior to the start of treatment and weekly until the conclusion of the study. Fecal grab samples were taken prior to treatment and every week from each heifer for coccidia counts. Apparent total-tract nutrient digestibility samples were taken in two different phases: 21 d on study until 27 d, and again at 63 d until 69 d. Apparent total tract nutrient digestibility was taken during this time and determined through acid-insoluble ash. Additives had a positive effect, tending to increase average BW and final BW. Any additive tended to increase heart girth, while MSB tended to be greater than either SB and MON. No other effects were seen on skeletal growth. Daily dry matter intakes (DMI) were increased in the diets containing additives as compared to control. Dry matter intake values were 4.00, 4.47, 4.16, and 4.46 kg/d for CON, SB, MON, and MSB, respectively. Feed efficiency (FE) was improved in MON supplemented
heifers as compared to SB. Fecal samples from each heifer indicated the presence of coccidia. Compared to control, additives decreased the number of coccidian oocysts present in feces. Monensin and SB treatments tended to have greater plasma glucose as compared to MSB. Average blood ketone concentrations were greater with any additive compared to CON, in SB vs. MON, and in MSB as compared to SB and MON. During the week 3 digestibility period, DMI tended to be greater in
heifers fed SB when compared to MON, as well as
heifers fed MSB when compared…

▼ The aim of this study was to compare embryo quality, uterine environment and corpus luteum function in
heifers and second/third parity cows. After superovulation and embryo recovery at day seven, 78 embryos (n = 17 from cows and n = 61 from
heifers) were scored morphologically for quality and developmental stage. Significant differences were observed in fertilization rate (p =0,01) and transferability (p < 0,01) between
heifers and cows.
Blood was collected on 11 different days in the cycle for progesterone (P4) analysis from every heifer (n = 6) and cow (n = 7) that was involved in this experiment. Day 0 is the start of the Ovsynch protocol. The plasma P4 levels on days 13, 15, 17, 19, 26, 28 and 30/31 were significantly higher (p < 0,05) in
heifers than in cows. There was a tendency for this difference on day 11 (0,05 < p <0,10). There were no significant differences in plasma P4 on day 9, day 21 and day 24.

▼ Objectives of the present study were to evaluate neonatal Holstein heifer performance while supplemented with coccidiostat (CX), yeast (YST), β-glucan or some combination of these products in non-medicated milk replacer. Efficacy of these products on E. coli and coccidia shedding was also observed. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed among treatment groups with respect to performance data collected which included growth, feed intake and efficiency, fecal and respiratory and blood parameters.
Heifers fed YST or YST + β-glucan had higher (P = 0.02 and P < 0.01, respectively) fecal E. coli concentrations compared to
heifers fed CX, CX + YST, or β-glucan. No
heifers showed clinical signs of coccidiosis and appeared to be healthy. These results suggest neonatal
heifers may be supplemented with yeast derivatives without negative effects on growth or health performance.

▼ The following experiment presented herein compared growth, physiological, and reproductive responses of beef
heifers with (MI) or without (CON) access to a creep-feeder, as a manner to stimulate metabolic imprinting while nursing their dams. On d 0 of the experiment, 60 Angus × Hereford
heifers were ranked by initial BW and age (140 ± 3 kg and 68 ± 3 d, respectively) as well as dam age and BCS, and assigned to pairs so all ranking criteria were similar between
heifers within each pair. On d 1, pairs were randomly assigned to MI (n = 15) or CON (n = 15). From d 1 to 51, MI pairs and their dams were allocated to 15 drylot pens where
heifers had ad libitum access to a corn-based supplement through a creep-feeder. The CON pairs and their dams were maintained in an adjacent single drylot pen. From d 52 to 111, cattle from both treatments were managed as a single group on a semiarid range pasture. On d 111,
heifers were weaned and allocated to 2 pastures according to treatment, receiving hay and a corn-based concentrate until d 326. Full BW was recorded prior to (d -1 and 0) and at the end of the creep-feeding period (d 50 and 51), whereas shrunk BW was collected on d 112 and 326. On d 0, 51, 111, 187, 261, and 325, blood was collected and real-time ultrasonography for LM depth and backfat thickness assessment was performed. Blood was also collected every 10 d from d 113 to 323 for puberty evaluation via plasma progesterone concentrations. Liver and subcutaneous fat biopsies were performed on d 51, 111, 261, and 325. Average daily gain was greater (P < 0.01) for MI than CON from d 1 to 51, tended (P = 0.09) to be greater for CON than MI from d 112 to 326, whereas BW on d 326 was similar (P = 0.87) between treatments. On d 51, MI had greater (P ≤ 0.01) plasma IGF-I and glucose concentrations, as well as mRNA expression of hepatic pyruvate carboxylase and adipose fatty acid synthase than CON. On d 261 and 325, plasma insulin concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.03) in CON than MI. Mean mRNA expression of hepatic IGF-I and adipose peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma were greater (P ≤ 0.05) in MI than CON.
Heifers assigned to MI attained puberty earlier (P = 0.04) during the experiment than CON, although age and BW at puberty were similar (P ≤ 0.74) between treatments. In conclusion, supplementing nursing
heifers via creep-feeding for 50 d altered physiological and biochemical parameters suggestive of a metabolic imprinting effect, but did not impact heifer age or BW at puberty.

▼ Three studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a timed AI (TAI) estrous synchronization protocol that used a 14-d controlled internal drug release (CIDR) insert and a GnRH injection on d 9 to force ovulation of potentially persistent follicles and induce a second wave of follicle growth. In the first study 710 yearling
heifers across 4 locations were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) 14-d GnRH-9
heifers (n = 242) received CIDR (1.38 g progesterone) and 100 μg GnRH on d 0, 100 μg GnRH on d 9, and 50 mg PGF2α on d 14 concurrent with CIDR removal, 2) 14-d 6 h PG
heifers (n = 233) were identical to 14-d GnRH-9 except that on d 14, 2 25 mg injections of PGF2α were given 6 h apart, and 3) 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR
heifers (n = 235) received 100 μg GnRH and CIDR on d 9 and a single 25 mg PGF2α at CIDR removal. All 3 treatments received 100 μg GnRH with TAI at 72 ± 2 h after CIDR removal. The 14-d GnRH-9 TAI pregnancy rate (54.5%) did not differ (P = 0.57) from the 14-d 6h PG TAI pregnancy rate (53.6%). The TAI pregnancy rate of 14-d protocols combined was 54.1%, and was not different (P = 0.20) from the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR TAI pregnancy rate of 46.4%. The following year 319 yearling
heifers across 4 locations were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) 14-d GnRH-9 (n = 107; as described earlier), 2) 14-d PG (n = 107) was identical to 14-d GnRH-9 except instead of receiving GnRH on d 0 they received 25 mg of PGF2α and, 3) 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR (n = 104; as described earlier). All treatments received 100 μg GnRH at TAI 72 ± 2 h after CIDR removal.
Heifers' ovaries (n = 120) were ultrasounded at 2 locations on d 0, 9, 14, and 17 of the estrous synchronization protocol to determine ovarian structures and response. The 14-d GnRH-9 TAI pregnancy rate (52.3%) was not different (P = 0.82) than 14-d PG (47.6%), nor was the TAI pregnancy rate of both 14-d treatments combined (50.0%) different (P = 0.66) from 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR (47.1%). Based on ultrasonography, the 14-d GnRH-9 treatment induced a second wave of follicular growth in 25.9% of
heifers while 14-d PG
heifers had larger (P = 0.01) follicle size on d 9 but did not reduce (P > 0.10) corpora lutea at TAI compared to 14-d GnRH-9 or 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR. That same year 453
heifers at another location were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) 14-d GnRH-9 (n = 150; as described earlier), 2) 14-d GnRH-7 (n = 150) received 100 μg GnRH and CIDR on d 0, 100 μg GnRH on d 7, 25 mg PGF2α on d 14 at CIDR removal, and 100 μg GnRH at TAI 63 ± 3 h after CIDR removal, and 3) 7-d CO-Synch + CIDR received 100 μg GnRH and CIDR on d 7, 25 mg PGF2α at CIDR removal, and 100 μg GnRH at TAI 63 ± 3 h after CIDR removal. Pregnancy rate to TAI of 14-d GnRH-9 (51.3%) was not different (P = 0.75) than 14-d GnRH-7 treatment (48.0%), nor was the TAI pregnancy rate of both 14-d treatments (49.6%) different (P = 0.83) from 7-d CO-Synch + CIDR (48.6%). These data indicate that the 14-d CIDR estrous synchronization protocol with d 9 GnRH produces comparable pregnancy rates to TAI compared to the industry utilized…

▼ Developmental changes within the hypothalamus are necessary for maturation of
the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. Recent reports have implicated several neuronal
networks in this process, but genes involved in their regulation have not been elucidated.
Using a well-established model for nutritional induction of precocious puberty,
objectives were to 1) use microarray technology to examine changes in gene expression
within the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus in pre-pubertal
heifers fed high or
low-concentrate diets, and 2) determine if high-concentrate diets are required for
nutritional induction of precocious puberty. In Experiment 1, early-weaned, cross-bred
heifers were fed either a high-forage/low-gain (HF/LG; 0.45 kg/d) or a highconcentrate/
high-gain (HC/HG; 0.91 kg/d) diet for 91 d. Analysis of microarray data
indicated that 346 genes were differentially expressed (P < 0.05) between HC/HG and
HF/LG
heifers. Expression of three key metabolic genes [neuropeptide Y (NPY), agoutirelated
protein (AGRP), and growth hormone receptor (GHR)] observed to be
differentially expressed in the microarray analysis was investigated further by quantitative PCR. Real-time RT-PCR indicated that expression of NPY, AGRP and
GHR was lower (P < 0.05) in HC/HG compared to HF/LG
heifers. In contrast,
concentrations of insulin (P < 0.05), IGF-1 (P < 0.002) and leptin (P = 0.1) were greater
in HC/HG compared to HF/LG. For Experiment 2, 48
heifers were used in 2 replicates
(24
heifers/replicate) in a 2 x 2 factorial design to examine the roles of diet type (HF vs
HC) and rate of gain (LG, 0.45 kg/d vs HG, 0.91 kg/d) on age at puberty.
Heifers were
fed HC/HG, HC/LG, HF/HG or HF/LG (n = 12/group) for 14 wk, and then switched to a
common growth diet (0.68 kg/d) until puberty.
Heifers in both HG groups reached
puberty at a younger age (54.5 ± 1.8 wk) than
heifers in both LG groups (60.2 ± 1.9 wk;
P < 0.04). A marked increase (P < 0.01) in serum concentrations of leptin occurred in
HC/HG
heifers between 24 and 30 wk of age. This increase in circulating leptin was not
observed in other groups. Overall, results indicate that nutritional regulation of
reproductive neuroendocrine development involves the control of NPY, AGRP and GHR
expression. The abrupt increase noted for circulating leptin in
heifers fed HC/HG diets,
if timed and sustained appropriately, could represent an important temporal cue for
activation of the neuroendocrine system and the onset of puberty.

▼ The objectives of this study were to evaluate the feeding a high energy supplementation and its effects on estrus and conception rates in Angus
heifers. Treatments were 1 a control group with water and wheat pasture ad libitum and 2 diet fed once daily containing 70% Sorghum Grain, 10% Cotton Seed Meal, 17% Alfalfa pellets and 3% Cane Molasses at 2.72 kg per head with water and sudan grass hay ad libitum. Treatment 1 consisted of 16 Angus
heifers and Treatment 2 consisted of 15 Angus
heifers randomly allocated. The 2-shot Lutalyse method was used to synchronize estrus and Heat Watch® sensors were attached. Treatment (2) received a high energy diet during entire breeding process, and two weeks post breeding. No significant differences between treatments were observed for estrus or conception rates (P ≤ 0.05). Pre and post experiment body condition score (BCS) and body weight (BW) between the two treatments were similar. Therefore the feed treatment (Treatment 2) had no effect on reproductive performance in Angus
heifers.

▼ This experiment compared two long-term CIDR-based protocols to synchronize estrus and ovulation prior to fixed-time AI (FTAI) in postpartum beef cows. Cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol (n = 196) received CIDR inserts (1.38 g progesterone) from d 0 to 14 and PGF2[alpha] (PG; 25 mg, i.m.) 19 d after CIDR removal on d 33. Cows assigned to the 14-16 d CIDR-PG protocol (n = 195) received CIDR inserts from d 3 to 17, and PG 16 d after CIDR removal on d 33. Cows in both treatments were artificially inseminated on d 36, 72 h after PG, with GnRH (100 [mu]g i.m.) at FTAI. Blood samples for progesterone (P4) were collected at d – 10 and d 0 to determine pretreatment estrous cyclicity status, and again at PG. Blood samples for estradiol (E2) were collected at PG and FTAI. HeatWatch estrus detection transmitters were utilized from CIDR removal until FTAI to determine onset of estrus following CIDR removal and PG. Dominant follicle diameter was determined via ultrasonagraphy at PG and FTAI. Ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis was performed 70 d after FTAI and confirmed at d 140 of gestation. Cows in both treatments had similar size dominant follicles at PG, and FTAI. Progesterone at PG was higher for 14-16 d CIDR-PG treated cows compared to 14-19 d treated cows. Mean concentrations of E2 were similar between treatments at PG, but were higher at FTAI for 14-16 d CIDR-PG treated cows. There were no differences between treatments in E2 at FTAI for cows that failed to exhibit estrus after PG. Estrous response after PG was higher for cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol. Estrous response after PG among cows [less than or equal to] 4 yr was higher for cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol, but there were no differences between treatments for cows [less than or equal to] 3 yr. There were no differences between treatments for FTAI pregnancy rate. However, pregnancy rate after FTAI among cows [greater than or equal to] 4 yr tended to be higher for cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol. In summary, both protocols worked effectively to synchronize estrus and ovulation prior to FTAI in postpartum beef cows, suggesting that a range in interval from CIDR removal to PG may be feasible when using long-term CIDR-based protocols. Higher estrous response rates after PG and improvements in FTAI pregnancy rate for 14-19 d treated cows [greater than or equal to] 4 yr of age warrants further consideration.

▼ A series of 4 observational studies was performed on a
Bovelder herd at Johannesburg
Water’s Northern Farm. The heifer
and cow breeding seasons started on 15 October and
1 November
every year, and consisted of 50 d and 60 d of oestrus observation
respectively,
with once daily artificial insemination (AI). Five
to 7 days after the AI period bulls were
added in multi-sire
groups for a period of 42 d. Pregnancy diagnoses were performed
between 23 March and 26 April every year. The farming system had
been in place for >25
years, with few deviations.
In the first
study, reproductive tract scoring (RTS) by transrectal palpation on
a 5-
point scale was performed 1 day before the start of breeding
on a group of
heifers (n = 272)
born in 2002.
Heifers with RTS 1
or 2 were estimated to be pre-pubertal, those with RTS 3
pubertal
and those with RTS 4 or 5 post-pubertal. Pre-breeding body weight
(BW) and body
condition score (BCS) were recorded, and Kleiber
ratio (KR) was calculated (average daily
gain/end weight0.75).
Heifers were followed until they weaned their first calves. The
objectives of this study were to determine if RTS is a valid tool
to predict reproduction and
production performance in limited bred
beef
heifers, and to compare its predictive value with
that of BW,
BCS, age and KR. After adjustment for BW and age, RTS was
positively
associated with pregnancy rate to the 50 day AI season
(P < 0.01), calf weaning weight (P <
0.01) and pregnancy
rate to the subsequent breeding season (P < 0.01), and
negatively
associated with days to calving (P < 0.01). RTS was
a better predictor of fertility than was
vi
KR, and similar in
its prediction of calf weaning weight. It was concluded that RTS is
a
predictor of heifer fertility and compares well with other
traits used as a predictor of
production outcomes.
It was further
hypothesised that RTS may predict long-term reproductive
performance due to its association with pregnancy outcome and days
to calving after first
breeding, combined with reports that
heifers calving early tend to calve early in subsequent
seasons
and have increased lifetime production. In study 2, a 7-year
longitudinal study, 292
beef cows in two age cohorts were observed
from 1-2 d before their first breeding season
(day of RTS), until
they had weaned up to 5 calves. Years to reproductive failure was
defined
as the number of years until a cow failed to become
pregnant during the AI season. Animals
with RTS 1 or 2 were at
increased risk of early reproductive failure compared to those
with
RTS 4 or 5 (HR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.0, 1.9) despite the fact that
RTS was not associated with

▼ Three studies were conducted to determine the effects of stockpiled winter forage species and protein supplementation strategy on heifer growth, reproductive performance, nutritional status, rumen fermentation, and the economic implications of forage-based heifer development. In all three studies, spring-born, beef heifers were stratified by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 stockpiled forages: (1) endophyte-infected tall fescue (TF, Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort) (2) big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi Vitman) and indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans L.) combination (BI), or (3) switchgrass (SG, Panicum virgatum L.). Forage treatments were randomly allocated to receive 1 of 2 supplement types: (1) 0.68 kg·heifer-1·d-1 of dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS) or (2) 0.22 kg·heifer-1·d-1 of blood meal and fish meal (BF), resulting in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Treatments were initiated in January and concluded in April at the onset of the breeding season. In Exp. 1, BW was greater (P < 0.01) for TF heifers, resulting from an increased (P < 0.01) ADG from initiation to breeding for TF heifers. From January to April, heifers grazing SG and BI pastures had a negative ADG; however, from breeding to final pregnancy diagnosis, SG and BI heifers compensated and had greater (P < 0.01) ADG than TF heifers. Pregnancy rates at fixed timed-AI and overall pregnancy rates did not differ (P ≥ 0.38) by forage or supplement treatment. In Exp. 2, heifers grazing SG pastures had greater (P = 0.04) ruminal acetate concentrations than their counterparts. However, ruminal concentrations of propionate and butyrate were not influenced (P > 0.32) by forage species. Due to an increase in ruminal acetate concentration, ruminal acetate:propionate ratio was greater (P = 0.04) for heifers grazing SG pastures. In Exp. 3, total cost of producing a heifer’s first calf using the three forage-based systems was 1,079 to 1,149/head with tall fescue (TF) being the most expensive forage-based heifer development forage system. Overall, low-input heifer development using stockpiled warm-season forages and protein supplementation may be a viable opportunity to extend the grazing season, lower production costs, and select for more efficient replacement females in the southeastern United States.

▼ The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a general immunostimulant feed supplement on amplifying dairy heifers’ immune response to Staphylococcus aureus vaccination. Blood and mammary immune parameters were measured. Serum
anti-S.aureus titers were similar between supplement-treated heifers and unsupplemented controls indicating no beneficial effect of the feed supplement. Prevalence of overall intramammary infections (86% of heifers, 58% of quarters) and S. aureus
intramammary infections (62.1% of heifers, 25.3% of quarters) was similar between treated heifers and unsupplemented controls. Musculoskeletal growth was also similar between treated and control heifers. However, L-selectin mRNA expression, phagocytic
activity, and reactive oxygen species production was greater in treated heifers compared to controls, suggesting enhanced immunity in supplemented heifers prior to calving. Furthermore, treated heifers exhibited decreased prevalence of postpartum
mastitis, decreased somatic cell counts, and increased milk yield compared to control heifers, although these differences were not statistically significant.

▼ A reproducible challenge model for inducing Streptococcus uberis mastitis in dairy heifers was developed. Heifers were assigned 2 quarters to receive an infusion of Strep. uberis NIRD-0140J. For challenge, a bacterial suspension was created
to deliver 1000–2000 cfu in 1 mL saline. For successful challenge, 3 of 4 consecutive cultures had to be confirmed positive for Strep. uberis. Six of the 7 heifers (85.7%) were challenged successfully with the dose used (mean: 1080 cfu). Once confirmed,
infected quarters were treated with nonlactating cow therapy. Results demonstrated that the challenge model developed was successful in routinely establishing experimental Strep. uberis mastitis in dairy heifers, and it was controlled (100% cure) by the
administration of nonlactating cow therapy. At parturition, all heifers were free of mastitis and antimicrobial residues, and exhibited normal milk production and somatic cell counts. The challenge model will be instrumental in evaluating new Strep.
uberis vaccine candidates.

▼ Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of an individual’s efficiency in utilising feed for maintenance and production during growth or lactation. It can be defined as the difference between the actual and predicted feed intake of that individual. Efficient animals eat less than predicted for their body weight and level of performance, and inefficient animals eat more. The objective of this study was to investigate possible relationships between RFI and behavioural traits, such as feeding behaviour, social dominance, and activity in young dairy heifers.
The intakes and liveweights of 1049 growing dairy heifers (6-8 months of age, 195 ± 25.8 kg liveweight) in five cohorts were measured for 42-49 days to ascertain individual RFI. Animals were housed in an outdoor feeding facility comprising 28 pens, each with eight animals and one feeder per pen, and were fed a dried, cubed lucerne diet. An electronic feed monitoring system measured the intake and feeding behaviour of individuals.
Intake was moderately to strongly correlated with RFI for individual cohorts (r = 0.54-0.74; p < 0.001), indicating that efficient animals ate less than inefficient animals. Several other feeding behaviour traits were related to RFI, but the relationships were weak (r = 0.14-0.26; p < 0.05) suggesting that feeding behaviour is not a reliable predictor of RFI in growing dairy heifers. Statistical comparison of the extremes of RFI (104 most and 104 least efficient) showed that the most efficient animals (low-RFI) had similar liveweight and average daily gain to the least efficient (high-RFI) (p > 0.05) but ate less (mean ± SED; 6.97 v 8.75 ± 0.10 kg cubes), had fewer meals (6.3 v 8.2 ± 0.61/d), shorter daily feeding duration (2.71 v 2.85 ± 0.07 h), ate longer meals (35.6 v 30.6 ± 1.54 min/meal), and ate more slowly (45.4 v 53.0 ± 1.36 g cubes/min) than the least efficient animals (all p < 0.05). These groups also differed in their feeding patterns over 24 h. Video recordings of 32 animals showed that daily activity included (mean ± SEM) 15.4 ± 0.5 h lying, 4.8 ± 0.5 h standing, and 2.9 ± 0.1 h feeding. However, neither social status nor activity were related to RFI in this study (p > 0.05).
Feeding behaviour explained only a small proportion of the variation in RFI in dairy heifers. Selecting animals for low RFI (efficient) is unlikely to affect social dominance and activity, although these results should be confirmed in a grazing environment representative of most New Zealand dairy farms.

▼ The purpose of this research was to establish the utility of adolescent live
weight data measured across cohorts of growing animals for predicting live
weight in first lactation. Live weight is associated with the growth and
maintenance feed requirements of a cow. Selection that simultaneously takes
account of milk income and feed requirements of dairy cattle can increase
future farm profitability. Estimated breeding values (EBVs) for mature cow live
weight are currently predicted using Live weight phenotypes measured during
lactation. Breeding companies in NZ actively measure the first lactation live
weight of a small proportion of the nation’s dairy cows—the daughters of their
bulls—to improve their ability to identify superior bulls. Accurate EBVs obtained
at an earlier age can allow reliable selection of superior young bulls which
would shorten the generation interval, increasing the rate of genetic progress.
The purpose of this research was to determine the utility of adolescent live
weight (i.e. live weight prior to first lactation) for predicting variation in live
weight measured in first lactation. We completed two studies. In the first study
(Section 4), we produced the (co)variance parameters for live weights
measured at four ages, from six months old through to first lactation. Our
hypothesis for this study was that live weight measured through adolescence
would share a strong positive genetic relationship with live weight measured
during lactation. Our results support this hypothesis, as estimates of genetic
correlations between weights at different ages ranged from 0.79 to 0.97. In the
second study (Section 5), we produced live weight EBVs using live weight
measured though adolescence. For comparison, we produced EBVs using just
live weight measured during first lactation. Our hypothesis was that the
accuracy of the live weight EBVs would be improved by including adolescent
live weight. Our results showed that including adolescent live weight
phenotypes improved the accuracy of the live weight EBVs for animals with
adolescent live weights, and their progeny. We concluded that adolescent live
weights are a useful predictor of live weight later in life, and should be
incorporated as a predictor trait for the national live weight EBV in NZ.

▼ Dairy cattle replacement programs should provide management and nutrition that best supports the evolving needs of the developing heifer during all phases of rearing. The work described in this dissertation had two main objectives, i) to evaluate the supplementation of nutrients that could be limiting for dairy calves transitioning from the preruminant to the ruminant state, and ii) to quantify energy and protein requirements of the growing dairy animal. The first objective was addressed with two feeding trials evaluating what are considered limiting nutrients during the weaning phase. The first study tested the inclusion of different forms of methionine (Met), one rumen-protected and two different analogs (HMBTa and HMBi), in the calf starter. Calves fed the starter with HMBi consumed more feed postweaning and where heavier at the end of the study, but overall calves seemed not to be limited by Met. The second feeding trial assessed the effect of the combined supplementation of B-vitamins and choline on measures of performance and vitamin adequacy, and results suggested that dairy calves could obtain sufficient B-vitamins and choline from the diet and rumen synthesis to support growth rates over 1 kg/d. For the second objective, a database was constructed by merging eight comparative slaughter studies conducted on growing dairy cattle. Using this data set as input, a first analysis explored different aspects concerning nutritional energetics and generated new maintenance requirements coefficients, estimates of efficiency of ME utilization and predictive equations for energy retention for preruminant and ruminant dairy cattle. A variable efficiency of ME utilization for growth calculated as a function of feeding level offered the best prediction ability of energy retention. Finally, a subsequent analysis generated a system of equations to predict net requirements, true supply and efficiencies of use of N and AA for young preruminant dairy calves. Requirements were defined based on the supply of N and AA per Mcal from total ME and carbohydrate ME. A combined variable efficiency allowed the best prediction of N and AA balance on a net basis. Together both models improved the understanding on nutrient partitioning and enhanced the accuracy to predict nutrient requirements and utilization in growing dairy cattle.

▼ Two 2-yr experiments evaluated the long-term effects of metabolic imprinting and different nutritional management systems for EW beef calves (Bos spp.). Experiment 1 evaluated the growth performance, carcass characteristics and muscle gene expression of beef steers, while experiment 2 evaluated the liver gene expression, growth and reproductive performance of beef
heifers. In both experiments, calves were normally weaned (NW) at 250 d of age (d 180), or early-weaned (EW) at 70 d of age (d 0) and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 EW calf management systems: 1) EW and limit-fed a high-concentrate diet in drylot for at least 180 d; 2) EW and limit-fed a high-concentrate diet in drylot for 90 d, then bahiagrass grazing until the time of NW (d 180); and 3) EW and ryegrass grazing for 60 to 90 d, then bahiagrass grazing until the time of NW. Experiment 1 demonstrated that overall growth performance of EW steers was similar or greater than NW steers. Early-weaned calves provided a high-concentrate diet in drylot for at least 90 d had greater body weight at the time of NW, and enhanced growth performance during the first 28 d of the finishing phase, when compared to NW and EW steers grazing annual ryegrass pastures. Also, feeding a high-concentrate diet to EW steers for at least 90 d enhanced plasma concentrations of IGF-1, and the expression of genes associated with growth (muscle IGF-1 receptor and paired box gene 7) and adipose tissue formation (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ?). However, early-exposure to high-concentrate diets did not affect the overall carcass characteristics and marbling scores of steers slaughtered at a common backfat thickness. Experiment 2 demonstrated that EW
heifers provided a high-concentrate diet for at least 90 d in drylot and EW
heifers grazed on ryegrass pastures, had similar or greater growth performance than NW
heifers. Furthermore, it provided evidence that early-exposure to a high-concentrate diet lead to metabolic imprinting effects, such as altered liver IGF-1 expression (during periods of similar nutritional management) and early puberty achievement of Bos indicus-influenced beef
heifers. Calf weaning at the onset of the breeding season enhanced cow growth performance, and tended to enhance reproductive performance of multiparous cows. ( en )
