▼ The recent experiences of asymmetric urban military operations have highlighted the pressing need for incorporation of soft data, such as informant statements, into the fusion process. Soft data are fundamentally different from hard data (generated by physics-based sensors), in the sense that the information they provide tends to be qualitative and subject to interpretation. These characteristics pose a major obstacle to using existing multi-sensor data fusion frameworks, which are quite well established for hard data. Given the critical and sensitive nature of intended applications, soft/hard data fusion requires a framework that allows for convenient representation of various data uncertainties common in soft/hard data, and provides fusion techniques that are robust, mathematically justifiable, and yet effective. This would allow an analyst to make decisions with a better understanding of the associated uncertainties as well as the fusion mechanism itself. We present here a detailed account of an analytical solution to the task of soft/hard data fusion. The developed analytical framework consists of several main components: (i) a Dempster-Shafer (DS) belief theory based fusion strategy; (ii) a complete characterization of the Fagin-Halpern DS theoretic (DST) conditional notion which forms the basis of the data fusion framework; (iii) an evidence updating strategy for the purpose of consensus generation; (iv) a credibility estimation technique for validation of evidence; and (v) techniques for reducing computational burden associated with the proposed fusion framework. The proposed fusion strategy possesses several intuitively appealing features, and satisfies certain algebraic and fusion properties making it particularly useful in a soft/hard fusion environment. This strategy is based on DS belief theory which allows for convenient representation of uncertainties that are typical of soft/hard domains. The Fagin-Halpern (FH) notion is perhaps the most appropriate DST conditional notion for soft/hard data fusion scenarios. It also forms the basis for our fusion framework. We provide a complete characterization of the FH conditional notion. This constitutes a strong result, that sets the foundation for understanding the FH conditional notions and also establishes the theoretical grounds for development of algorithms for efficient computation of FH conditionals. We also address the converse problem of determining the evidence that may have generated a given change of belief. This converse result can be of significant practical value in certain applications. A consensus control strategy developed based on our fusion technique allows consensus analysis to be carried out in a multitude of applications that call for extended flexibility in uncertainty modeling. We provide a complete theoretical development of the proposed consensus strategy with rigorous proofs. We make use of these consensus notions to establish a data validation technique to assess credibility of evidence in the absence of ground truth. Métodos de controle baseado em dados utilizam dados de operação da planta para minimizar algum critério de desempenho, tipicamente quadrático, sem que seja necessário o conhecimento de um modelo da planta. O Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) é um destes métodos, utilizando dados obtidos da operação da planta em malha fechada para gerar uma estimativa não-polarizada do gradiente do critério de desempenho, que é então minimizado através de algum variante do método de Newton. Alguns resultados da literatura tratam da aplicação do IFT em sistemas não-lineares, sempre sob a condição de diferenciabilidade da não-linearidade (linearização em torno do ponto de operação). Um exemplo prático da aplicação do método na sintonia do controlador de um servomotor com folga é o único resultado encontrado. Este trabalho investiga, através de casos simulados e práticos, a aplicabilidade do método IFT em sistemas com não-linearidades não-diferenciáveis comumente encontradas em sistemas mecânicos, como a folga e a zona-morta, e a saturação, presente em todo e qualquer sistema físico.

Data based control methods use data collected from a plant’s “regular” operation to minimize a performance criterion, typically in quadratic form, without any information about a system’s model. Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) is one such method that uses closed-loop operating data to generate an unbiased estimate of the cost criterion gradient, which is then minimized with some form of the Newton method. Results in the literature for IFT applied to non-linear systems require that the non-linearity is differentiable (basically, linearizing the system around an operating point). One practical application of the algorithm to tune a controller for a servomotor system with backlash is the only result found. This work investigates, using simulated and practical examples, the suitability of the use of IFT in systems with non-differentiable non-linearities commonly found in mechanical systems, such as backlash and dead-zone, and saturation, found in every physical system.

▼ The performance gap between Compute and Storage is fairly considerable. With multi-core computing capabilities, CPUs have scaled with the proliferation of Big Data, but storage still remains the bottleneck. The physical media characteristics are mostly blamed for storage being slow, but this is partially true. The full potential of storage devices cannot be harnessed till all layers of I/O hierarchy function efficiently. Despite advanced optimizations applied across various layers along the odyssey of data access, the I/O stack still remains volatile. The problems associated due to the inefficiencies in data management get amplified in multi-tasking Big Data shared resource environments. Our effort is to deliver near-ideal performance of storage systems, by identifying issues, designing, and, developing software defined storage capabilities with minimal or no infrastructural change for Data Centers experiencing Big Data. Thereby, making changes feasible. Neither do we intend to change application characteristics nor improve storage devices or network infrastructures, but only the way data is managed. Therefore, this research aims to improve the layers along the odyssey of data access environment by understanding the I/O hierarchy and the application needs from storage. Our contributions have been in three major fields, i.e., 1) Operating System optimizations deals with optimizing the OS and extending its competency. We develop solutions, BID-HDD, from the core of the operating system, i.e. a block I/O scheduling scheme to avoid contentions and improve individual storage device (Hard Disk Drives HDDs) capabilities. 2) Multi-tier solutions focuses on systems design to incorporate heterogeneous tiers of storage together coupled with value propositions of data being scattered over multiple devices. We manage multiple devices and develop methodologies, BID-Hybrid, to automated tiering using the information obtained at the block interface using SSDs (Solid State Drives) for improving disk performance. 3) Workload specific optimizations are full-stack data center storage solutions designed and developed to suit workload characteristics. We design and develop methods, LDM- our data management solution, for the complete data center ecosystem using multiple tiers of storage for mitigating the impact of data-dependency in lineage class of applications. LDM amalgamates the information from all the stratas, devices and layers of I/O path. With theoretical and experimental evaluations, our host managed storage solutions, namely, BID-HDD, BID-Hybrid, and LDM, fulfils our goal of narrowing the gap between what storage is capable of delivering and what it actually delivers in a Big Data environment. Our research would aid Data Centers to achieve their Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as well as keeping Total-Cost of Ownership (TCO) low. From the Green Computing perspective, our solutions will decrease energy footprint, due to much reduced work to process data across all tiers of computing, i.e. storage, compute, and network.

▼ With the intent of settling practical questions in recognizing the average-case complexity of a fixed NP-hard problem with a given random distribution on input, this thesis provides a well-founded semi-random model. The development is mathematical, starting from a basis involving semi-random bit strings. The object is a set of practical theoretical tools meant to increase the modularity of analytical results. The result provides a continuous abstraction between worst-case and average-case analyses, described in the thesis as expected-case analysis. Analytic demonstrations with a semi-random model are immediately applicable to random submodels. Most published algorithms analyzed for the average case apply only in very narrow circumstances, and few positive results convey more than a suggestion of applicability to practical situations. This forms an impediment to the serious pursuit of formal methods with regard to expectations. In contrast, the methods provided in the thesis not only provide for the natural re-use of previously obtained analytic material, but also simplify the production of such material. As a demonstration, problems related to Hamiltonian cycles on semi-random graph models are investigated, and the range of known, efficient-on-average solutions for problem are extended significantly. The algorithms shown are for both randomized and non-randomized architectures, and emphasize parallel portability. Many of these positive results are not accessible with other techniques, and the insights obtained are theoretically interesting in their own right. In additional to practical concerns with making analytic efforts more productive, the thesis modestly addresses some of the limitations on what can be shown, and provides a new perspective on problem complexities and architecture assumptions. Some data models are shown to present NP-related difficulties; others, RNP-related difficulties. Today more and more different types of autonomous robots and vehicles are being developed. Most of these rely on the global positioning system and/or communication with other robots and vehicles to determine their global position. However, these are not viable options for the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) of today since radio-waves does not travel well in water. Instead, various techniques for determining the AUVs position are used which comes with a margin of error. This thesis examines the problem of efficiently performing a local search within this margin of error with the objective of finding a docking-station or a bouy.To solve this problem research was made on the subject of search theory and how it previously has been applied in this context. What was found was that classical bayesian search theory had not been used very often in this context since it would require to much processing power to be a viable option in the embedded systems that is AUVs. Instead different heuristics were used to get solutions that still were viable for the situations in which they were used, even though they maybe wasn’t optimal.Based on this the search-strategies Spiral, Greedy, Look-ahead and Quadtree were developed and evaluated in a simulator. Their mean time to detection (MTTD) were compared as well as the average time it took for the strategies to process a search. Look-ahead was the best one of the four different strategies with respect to the MTTD and based on this it is suggested that it should be implemented and evaluated in a real AUV.

Idag utvecklas allt fler olika typer av autonoma robotar och fordon. De flesta av dessa är beroende av det globala positioneringssystemet och/eller kommunikation med andra robotar och fordon för att bestämma deras globala position. Detta är dock inte realistiska alternativ för autonoma undervattensfordon (AUV) idag eftersom radiovågor inte färdas bra i vatten. I stället används olika tekniker för att bestämma AUVens position, tekniker som ofta har en felmarginal. Denna rapport undersöker problemet med att effektivt utföra en lokal sökning inom denna felmarginal med målet att hitta en dockningsstation eller en boj.För att lösa detta problem gjordes en litteraturstudie om ämnet sökteori och hur det tidigare har tillämpats i detta sammanhang. Det som hittades var att den klassiska bayesiska sökteorin inte hade använts mycket ofta i detta sammanhang eftersom det skulle kräva för mycket processorkraft för att det skulle vara ett rimligt alternativ för de inbyggda systemen på en AUV. La capacité des systèmes de stockage de données ne cesse de croître pour atteindre actuellement l’échelle de l’exaoctet, ce qui a un réel impact sur la robustesse des systèmes de stockage. En effet, plus le nombre de disques contenus dans un système est grand, plus il est probable d’y avoir une défaillance. De même, le temps de la reconstruction d’un disque est proportionnel à sa capacité. La simulation permet le test de nouveaux mécanismes dans des conditions quasi réelles et de prédire leur comportements. Open and Generic data Storage system Simulation tool (OGSSim), l’outil que nous proposons, supporte l’hétérogénéité et la taille importante des systèmes actuels. Sa décomposition modulaire permet d’entreprendre chaque technologie de stockage, schéma de placement ou modèle de calcul comme des briques pouvant être combinées entre elles pour paramétrer au mieux la simulation. La robustesse étant un paramètre critique dans ces systèmes, nous utilisons le declustered RAID pour assurer la distribution de la reconstruction des données d’un disque en cas de défaillance. Nous proposons l’algorithme Symmetric Difference of Source Sets (SD2S) qui utilise le décalage des blocs de données pour la création du schéma de placement. Le pas du décalage est issu du calcul de la proximité des ensembles de provenance logique des blocs d’un disque physique. Pour évaluer l’efficacité de SD2S, nous l’avons comparé à la méthode Crush, exemptée des réplicas. Il en résulte que la création du schéma de placement, aussi bien en mode normal qu’en mode défaillant, est plus rapide avec SD2S, et que le coût en espace mémoire est également réduit (nul en mode normal). Capacity of data storage systems does not cease to increase to currently reach the exabyte scale. This observation gets a real impact on storage system robustness. In fact, the more the number of disks in a system is, the greater the probability of a failure happening is. Also, the time used for a disk reconstruction is proportional to its size. Simulation is an appropriate technique to test new mechanisms in almost real conditions and predict their behavior. We propose a new software we callOpen and Generic data Storage system Simulation tool (OGSSim). It handles the heterogeneity andthe large size of these modern systems. Its modularity permits the undertaking of each storage technology, placement scheme or computation model as bricks which can be added and combined to optimally configure the simulation.Robustness is a critical issue for these systems. We use the declustered RAID to distribute the data reconstruction in case of a failure. We propose the Symmetric Difference of Source Sets (SD2S) algorithmwhich uses data block shifhting to achieve the placement scheme. ▼ As sensor data becomes more and more available, there is an increasing interest in assimilating real time sensor data into spatial temporal simulations to achieve more accurate simulation or prediction results. Particle Filters (PFs), also known as Sequential Monte Carlo methods, hold great promise in this area as they use Bayesian inference and stochastic sampling techniques to recursively estimate the states of dynamic systems from some given observations. However, PFs face major challenges to work effectively for complex spatial temporal simulations due to the high dimensional state space of the simulation models, which typically cover large areas and have a large number of spatially dependent state variables. As the state space dimension increases, the number of particles must increase exponentially in order to converge to the true system state. The purpose of this dissertation work is to develop localized particle filtering to support PFs-based data assimilation for large-scale spatial temporal simulations. We develop a spatially dependent particle-filtering framework that breaks the system state and observation data into sub-regions and then carries out localized particle filtering based on these spatial regions. The developed framework exploits the spatial locality property of system state and observation data, and employs the divide-and-conquer principle to reduce state dimension and data complexity. Within this framework, we propose a two-level automated spatial partitioning method to provide optimized and balanced spatial partitions with less boundary sensors. We also consider different types of data to effectively support data assimilation for spatial temporal simulations. These data include both hard data, which are measurements from physical devices, and soft data, which are information from messages, reports, and social network. The developed framework and methods are applied to large-scale wildfire spread simulations and achieved improved results. Furthermore, we compare the proposed framework to existing particle filtering based data assimilation frameworks and evaluate the performance for each of them. ▼ The term cryptography is defined as the encryption of sensitive information such as, data, image and others. The cryptographic techniques have changed over the years based on the developments of encryption software and encryption algorithms. Sensitive data needs to be protected from being stolen and read by unauthorized persons regardless of whether this data is stored in hard drives, flash memory, laptops, desktops and or other storage devices. The data can be processed, transferred, and stored. In order to secure data in storage devices, this research will evaluate the encryption performance of six different storage devices. The six different storage devices in this research are Hard Disk Drive (HDD), Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD, Solid State Disk based NAND Single-Level-Cell (SSD SLC) flash memory, Solid State Disk based NAND Multi-Level-Cell flash memory (SSD MLC), Solid State Disk based NAND Triple-Level- Cell flash memory (SSD TLC), and Solid State Disk based NAND Multi-Level-Cell flash memory (SSD MLC) (PCIe interface 3.0 x4). The first experiment will evaluate the performance of HDD, SSHD, and SSD based NAND MLC flash memory before and after applying encryption algorithm to the storage device to determine which one performs the best. These storage devices operate differently. HDD stores the data on a magnetic disk (old technology) and SSD stores the data on a flash memory. SSHD is an integrated technology that combines NAND flash SSD and HDD technology (old technology). The purpose of NAND flash SSD on the hybrid drive is to act as a cache for the data stored on the HDD. The second experiment aims to evaluate the performance of different SSD based flash memory before and after applying encryption to the storage device. It will include a detailed comparison of the performance of the encryption on SSD based NAND SLC, MLC, and TLC flash memory (SATA interface type). The comparative results will be analysed to determine the SSD device with the highest performance. The third experiment will take the best SSD performer in the second experiment and compare it with SSD based NAND MLC flash (PCIe interface type). SSD based NAND SLC, MLC and TLC flash (SATA interface) are current technology whereas SSD based NAND MLC (PCIe interface) is emerging technology. The research will produce a comparative performance analysis of both SSD interface types to determine which type of SSD interface performs the best. The last experiment aims to compare the performance of different encryption algorithms including AES, Serpent, and Twofish 256 bits on the six different storage devices using BestCrypt (commercial storage encryption software) and TrueCrypt (Open source storage encryption software). ▼ Big data stores are becoming increasingly important in a variety of domains including scientific computing, internet applications, and business applications. For price and performance reasons, such storage is comprised of magnetic hard drives. To achieve the necessary degree of performance and reliability, the drives are configured into storage subsystems based on RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). Because of their mechanical nature, hard drives are relatively power-hungry and slow compared to most other computer components. Big data centers spend tremendous amounts on power, including cooling, adding significantly to their overall costs. Additionally, drives are orders of magnitude slower than electrical computer components, resulting in significant performance challenges any time disk I/O is required. Recently, SSDs (solid state drives) have emerged based on flash memory technology. Although too expensive to replace magnetic disks altogether, SSDs use less power and are significantly faster for certain operations.This dissertation examines several new architectures that use a limited amount of faster hardware to decrease the power consumption and increase the performance or data redundancy of RAID storage subsystems. We present RAID4S, which uses SSDs for parity storage in a disk-SSD hybrid RAID system. Because of itsbetter performance characteristics, SSD parity storage reduces thedisk overhead associated with parity storage and thereby significantly reduces the disk overheads caused by RAID. This decreases the power consumption and can be used to increase the performance of simple RAID schemes or increase redundancy by enabling the use of higher order RAID schemes with less performance penalty. Storing parity on SSDs can reduce the average number of I/Os serviced by the remaining disks by up to 25-50%. By replacing some hard drives with SSDs, we reduce power and improve performance. Our RAID4S-modthresh optimization improves performance in certain workloads.The other two architectures expose RAID's inability to handle heterogeneity in workloads and hardware. RAIDE is motivated by a workload imbalance we detected in stripe-unaligned workloads. By placing faster hardware to handle the higher workload at the edges of the array, we observed higher throughput. RAIDH places parity on faster devices based on device weights. Higher weighted devices are faster and thus store additional parity. The slowest devices may store no parity at all. This technique can be used on any heterogeneous array to enable faster random write throughput.

▼ The demand for online storage has been increasing significantly during the last few years. Hard disk drives are the primary storage devices used in data centers for storing these online contents. The servo assembly of the dual-stage Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is composed of the Voice Coil Motor (VCM) and the Mili-Actuator (MA), where the VCM is responsible for coarse positioning at low frequency regions and the MA is responsible for fine positioning at high frequency regions. Controlling these two actuators is very critical in precision positioning of the read/write head, which is mounted at the edge of the servo assembly. In this dissertation, the precision positioning of the head during the self-servo writing process as well as feed-forward and feedback controls in the track following mode are considered. This dissertation discusses three control design methodologies for hard disk drives servo systems, in order to improve their performance as well as their reliability. The first is a state estimator for non-uniform sampled systems with irregularities in the measurement sampling time, which estimates the states at a uniform sampling time. The second is an online uncertainty identification algorithm, which parameterizes and identifies the uncertain part of transfer functions in a dual-stage HDD. The third is a frequency based data-driven control design methodology, which considers mixed H_2/H_infinity control objectives and is able to synthesize track following servo systems for dual stage actuators utilizing only the frequency response measurement data, without the need of identifying the models of the actuators.The state estimator design for non-uniform sampled systems with irregularity in the measurement sampling time is considered, where it is proposed to design an observer to estimate the states at a uniform sampling time. This observer is designed using a time-varying Kalman filter as well as a gain-scheduling observer. The Kalman filter has the optimal performance, while the gain-scheduling observer requires relatively lower computational power. Simulations are conducted involving the self-servo writing process in hard disk drives, where performance as well as computational complexity of these two observers are compared under different noise scenarios.Uncertainties in system dynamics can change the closed loop transfer functions and affect the performance or even stability of the control algorithm. These uncertainties are parameterized as stable terms using coprime factorizations, and are identified in an online fashion. ▼ The use of seismic methods in hard rock environments in Western Australia for mineral exploration is a new and burgeoning technology. Traditionally, mineral exploration has relied upon potential field methods and surface prospecting to reveal shallow targets for economic exploitation. These methods have been and will continue to be effective but lack lateral and depth resolution needed to image deeper mineral deposits for targeted mining. With global need for minerals, and gold in particular, increasing in demand, and with shallower targets harder to find, new methods to uncover deeper mineral reserves are needed. Seismic reflection imaging, hard rock borehole data analysis, seismic inversion and seismic attribute analysis all give the spatial and volumetric exploration techniques the mineral industry can use to reveal high value deeper mineral targets.In 2002, two high resolution seismic lines, the East Victory and Intrepid, were acquired along with sonic logging, to assess the feasibility of seismic imaging and rock characterisation at the St. Ives gold camp in Western Australia. An innovative research project was undertaken combining seismic processing, rock characterization, reflection calibration, seismic inversion and seismic attribute analysis to show that volumetric predictions of rock type and gold-content may be viable in hard rock environments. Accurate seismic imaging and reflection identification proved to be challenging but achievable task in the all-out hard rock environment of the Yilgarn craton. Accurate results were confounded by crocked seismic line acquisition, low signal-to-noise ratio, regolith distortions, small elastic property variations in the rock, and a limited volume of sonic logging. Each of these challenges, however, did have a systematic solution which allowed for accurate results to be achieved.Seismic imaging was successfully completed on both the East Victory and Intrepid data sets revealing complex structures in the Earth as shallow as 100 metres to as deep as 3000 metres. The successful imaging required homogenization of the regolith to eliminate regolith travel-time distortions and accurate constant velocity analysis for reflection focusing using migration. Verification of the high amplitude reflections within each image was achieved through integration of surface geological and underground mine data as well as calibration with log derived synthetic seismograms. The most accurate imaging results were ultimately achieved on the East Victory line which had good signal-to-noise ratio and close-to-straight data acquisition direction compared to the more crooked Intrepid seismic line.The sonic logs from both the East Victory and Intrepid seismic lines were comprehensively analysed by re-sampling and separating the data based on rock type, structure type, alteration type, and Au assay. ▼ Data-driven decision support systems, such as data warehouses, are extremely costly to develop. Forty one per cent of data warehouse development practitioners have experienced project failures. These projects were either completed after exceeding budget and time limits, or not at all. Some influential data warehousing authors advocate user involvement as a solution, while others focus on technical factors to improve data warehouse success. This study proposes a framework for data warehousing success based on systems thinking methodology. Systems thinking implies a holistic approach to problem solving. A system is a set of interrelated elements. A systems approach represents a broad view, taking all aspects into account and concentrating on interactions between different parts of the problem. This study investigates the practices of data warehousing professionals from a systems thinking point of view, before proposing a framework for the explicit use of specific systems thinking methodologies in data warehouse development. Interpretive case study research is used to investigate practices of data warehousing professionals in three different organisations. Pattern matching is used to analyse collected data. This is done by mapping practices to different systems thinking perspectives. However, the theory component of the thesis is not a description of current data warehousing practices from a systems thinking point of view, as in typical interpretive research. The theory component relates more to critical research in that it is meant to change data warehousing practices towards specific systems thinking methodologies. The proposed framework incorporates three sources of information. These are a literature study on systems thinking philosophy, methodology and practice; a literature study on data warehousing and data warehousing success factors; and the results of case studies on current practices of data warehousing professionals analysed from a systems thinking perspective. The framework gives a methodological foundation for a holistic approach to data warehousing with maximum user involvement. It views a data warehouse as a system with typical systems characteristics, such as specified objectives relating to the organisation’s objectives, an environment, available resources, specified components and effective management.
