▼ This policy advocacy study examined the current grade and promotion policy on record for Mountain West School District (MWSD) as it relates to mastery of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Illinois Learning Standards (ILS), the academic targets identified for students to be successful in colleges and careers. Furthermore, this study recommended changes to the existing policy at MWHS so as to report grades from coursework and those at the end of marking periods as accurately and fairly as possible, with specific skills-based feedback related to the mastery (or lack thereof) of both local and national standards that may better prepare students for performance on standardized examinations, foster more accurate grade point averages (GPAs) and prepare students for colleges and careers. This study concluded that MWSD’s grading/promotion policy bestowed upon the superintendent (or designee) the authority to implement any system of grading/promotion, so long as it is fair, accurate, and equitable, as stated in the Illinois School Code (ISC). Thus, the superintendent or designee may implement any grading/promotion system possible as long as it complies with school code graduation requirements. Moreover, the current policy allows for administrators to intervene in grading/reporting if it is deemed that the grade(s) reported by the teacher is inaccurate or erroneous. What is more, the policy does not advocate for any particular grading system. However, in practice, schools in MWSD use the traditional grading system to report satisfactory performance and promotion to further areas: A through F, with percentages and points aggregation. The policy does not make any reference to grading practices/reporting being aligned to national or local standards. Lastly, the policy suggests that schools have the autonomy to pursue a grading system that the local leader/principal deems appropriate for a school’s pupils. ▼ Timber as a renewable source has been extensively applied among European countries in the construction field. Among more than 1000 available wood species which could be potentially applied as engineered wood, tropical hardwood takes up a significant portion and has advantages of high mechanical resistance and remarkable biological durability against micro-organisms compared to coniferous species and European grown hardwood. Okan has been part of this development, as a hardwood species mostly from the West African regions.The objective of this thesis is to investigate the strength influencing features, calculate corresponding characteristic values and establish the correlation between the influencing factors and the bending strength with the least deviation and create a representative Okan strength predicting model. Abstracted from literature and dataset, geographically speaking, climate, precipitation, soil quality, water sources are expected to have varying degrees of impacts on mechanical properties. From the material perspective, knot ratio, fiber orientation (slope of grain & ring angle), moisture content, density, Modulus of elasticity (dynamic, static) are important factors. Several experiments about hardwood bending strength have been conducted. However, none of those focus on the growth ring angle and the 3D effect of the fiber orientation. To dive deep into Okan, a series of laboratory tests are conducted, including non-destructive inspection, a four-point bending test on 20 beams (10 stored in the dry condition, 10 stored in the wet condition) with the assistance of digital image correlation technology [DIC]). Except for the regulated experimental procedure, two innovative visual inspection methods based on image processing via Matlab were conducted and verified, which turns out the automation method has preferable efficiency and precision. However, this method could hardly identify compression failure. To avoid the compression failure, beams with the dynamic modulus of elasticity less than 18500 N/mm² are supposed to be checked again by the inspector. All possible influencing factors are well determined by the above-mentioned testing.Influencing factors of the fracture section form could be concluded from the observation of damaged samples. The slope of grain and growth ring work together to determine the form of the governing crack section. From the experimental outcome, it is clear to observe the linear correlation between mechanical properties and moisture content grouped by the slope of grain. Constant k= 0.13 for bending strength is found, k = 0.05 is found for dynamic modulus of elasticity. The experimental results yield the following adjusted characteristic values: bending strength 63.56 N/mm², dynamic modulus of elasticity 21134.55 N/mm², density 866.58 kg/mm³. Based on 20 beams, this batch of Okan could be graded to D55 which is higher than D30-D35 yielded from the dataset. Besides, Okan beams from Gabon could also be graded into D55. ▼ As a result of the national shift to a more standards-based model for education, principals across the country are leading organizational change in all aspects of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and leadership for student learning. One reform initiative, entitled standards-based grading (SBG), attempts to reimagine the way schools measure and communicate student progress toward learning (Guskey, 2009). Although this approach is gaining traction and more schools are adopting this method for measuring and communicating student learning (Guskey et al., 2011; Jung & Guskey, 2011; Marzano & Heflebower, 2011), there is a void in the literature that documents how principals create and use policies to govern the implementation of standards-based grading, specifically in high schools. Although many districts give principals autonomy around the rollout of SBG within their schools, most districts have not published a common definition or guidelines for policy and implementation practices for this reform initiative. In the absence of a common definition, district policy, or implementation guidelines for SBG, principals are left to interpret, create policy, and implement this shift in grading practices based on their unique understandings and interpretations. To better understand this phenomenon, this qualitative research study sought to examine and understand how 10 public high school principals from six states created policies, implemented, and sustained the use of standards-based grading in their schools. Three research questions framed this study: (a) from principals’ perspectives, how has the implementation of standards-based grading promoted improved student learning; (b) what core systems and structures must be in place to implement standards-based grading and what process did principals use to create and communicate the policies governing standards-based grading in their high schools; and (c) what factors have advanced or hindered the implementation of standards-based grading in high schools? To guide data collection and analysis, the Transformation of Intentions (Hall, 1995; Hall & McGinty, 1997) conceptual framework was used to explore how high school principals led the policy creation process used to govern the implementation of standards-based grading. I explored three aspects of the Transformation of Intentions framework: intentions, process intentions, and content intentions. Findings revealed that principals decided to implement standards-based grading ultimately to improve student learning, teacher practice, improve the validity and reliability of grading, and to communicate student learning more clearly to stakeholder groups. ▼ The purpose of this study was to attain and analyze data regarding high school English teachers' beliefs about grading practices and their self-reported grading practices, to identify and understand disparities that exist between teachers' beliefs and self-reported practices, to identify discrepancies between the same self-reported practices and evidence of the practices actually utilized, and to consider teachers' perceptions as to the causes for these discrepancies. Instrumentation for this study included two surveys with both Likert and Likert-like items and an interview/portfolio analysis of teachers' grading systems. A combined total of 204 high school English-language arts teachers representing thirty-eight states and eighty-five schools comprised the sample. Corresponding pairs of Likert-type items were analyzed using studies of the mode, median, mean rank, and the Mann-Whitney U Test to study a comparison of the medians, and comparisons of true Likert scale item results were completed using studies of the means and an independent samples t-test. Interview/portfolio analysis data were analyzed both descriptively and inferentially including the calculation of 95% confidence intervals for generalizability. All open-ended items were considered qualitatively through a process of identifying and categorizing trends in language and over-arching themes. Results indicate that the sample finds grading practices recommended by experts in the field to be best grading practices, and respondents generally report the use of these same practices in their own grading systems. The data reveal, however, discrepancies between the majority of teachers' reported practices and their actual practices. Study participants are likely to place blame for these discrepancies on these sources: campus or district authorities, the limited time available, and the interferences caused by parents. ▼ In this age of standards-based education, students are being taught the concepts and skills deemed important and necessary according to state standards. Students are being assessed on their understanding of these concepts and skills through high-stakes testing. Standards-based grading is assessing students on their understanding of these same concepts and skills in their classroom work and informing parents of students' progress through regularly published report cards. This mixed-methods study explored the grading beliefs, practices and concerns of elementary teachers in a school district preparing to implement standards-based grading and reporting. The study also contained elements of action research as it was purposeful in planning for that specific change, and also due to the author's depth of involvement as both the researcher and elementary principal. During this study, teachers were participating in a book study in order to build a common knowledge base and common vocabulary around standards-based grading practices. The author was particularly interested in discovering teachers' concerns, in order to help identify and remove barriers to this change. Data were collected at both the beginning and end of the book study, through surveys using forced choice and written response. The study utilizes the concurrent triangulation strategy to compare the data and interpret the findings. Collaboration, technology and support, and educating families were the themes that emerged from the data. Teachers expressed the need for ongoing collaboration with their peers in order to create and maintain consistency across the district regarding standards-based grading. They expressed the desire to have an online grade book set up with all of the standards, and the training to use the grade book efficiently. They shared their need for support in learning how to organize their materials and how to manage their time. Regarding families, teachers wanted to be certain that parents and students will understand the process of standards-based grading, so that they can participate as partners in the process. Out of these themes, recommendations were made regarding the professional development and support needed to address the concerns of teachers and to help make the transition to standards-based grading as smooth as possible. ▼ The problem in green pea grading system by using brine flotation is loss of some less mature peas (generally regarded as higher in quality and price) in the sinker fraction (lower quality). Green peas were sampled from the production line as follows: (1) blanched but ungraded peas, (2) floater fraction, and (3) sinker fraction. Peas from the floater and sinker fractions were tested using the standard brine flotation test (United States Standards for Grades of Frozen Peas, 1959). Using sodium chloride salt brine as the separation medium, the blanched but ungraded peas were used to test the effect on percent floaters caused by: (1) change in brine concentration, (2) change in brine temperature, (3) change in pea temperature. Again, the blanched but ungraded peas were used to test the effect of underskin air on percent floaters, using sucrose syrup as the separation medium. The relationships between change in percent floater peas and maturity of the floater and sinker fractions were determined by using Alcohol Insoluble Solids (AIS) analysis as the maturity reference method. The nature of problem was identified, when a high percent (44.9%) U.S. Fancy grade floaters was found in the sinker fraction from the factory. The study showed that the percentage of floaters was significantly (p=0.05) influenced by brine concentration, brine temperature, pea temperature, and retention of air under the skin of the peas. Regression analysis of the data for the first three factors indicated that rate of change in percent floaters was greatest with brine concentration, and least with pea temperature. The change in maturity of floater and sinker fractions as determined by AIS analysis showed a close positive relationship between the change in percent floaters produced by change in the treatment conditions. Again, AIS results showed that residual underskin air in the intact blanched peas significantly affected the accurate separation by a false increase in buoyancy of borderline maturity peas (AIS was in between floater's and sinker's) in the flotation process. The underskin air factor was the least important factor affecting percent floaters when compared with the other factors of brine concentration, brine temperature, and pea temperature. ▼ The composition and some qualitative aspects of ground beef offered for sale in Corvallis, Oregon were studied. Samples were purchased from six retail markets twice weekly throughout a six week test period. Three stores were independently owned and operated and three were chain stores. Differences in moisture, fat and protein levels of ground beef samples among the six stores and between chain and independently owned stores were statistically significant. Differences in composition between sampling days (Tuesday versus Friday) and between replicate weeks were generally not significant. Ground beef from chain stores was generally characterized by higher moisture and protein levels and lower fat levels. Thirty-two percent of all samples (50 percent of the independent stores and 14 percent of the chain stores) exceeded the legal limit of 30 percent fat. Moisture:protein ratios ranged from 2.53 to 4.24 while the average value was 3.59. About 28 percent of all samples had ratios in excess of 3.70. Differences in moisture:protein ratios between chain and independent stores were not significant. Although differences in extract-release volume (ERV) of ground beef obtained from the various stores were significant, differences between sampling days, replicate weeks and chain versus independent stores were not. Resazurin reduction times of ground beef among individual stores, between sampling days, replicate weeks and chain versus independent stores were not significantly different. The correlation between ERV and resazurin reduction time was low (r = 0.21) suggesting a poor relationship between these two procedures for assessing microbial contamination in ground beef. Differences in nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) levels of samples among stores and between sampling days were statistically significant. Only minor differences in NPN levels between store types and replicate weeks were observed. Soluble protein levels appeared to be a reflection of total protein. Iodine numbers of ground beef fat ranged from 43.7 to 53.6 and were significantly higher in ground beef purchased from chain stores. Price per pound of ground beef and price per pound of protein were significantly different among the six stores. The price per pound of meat was significantly higher in the chain stores than in the independent stores. However, price per pound of protein and price per pound of soluble protein were essentially the same for the two types of stores. ▼ In the current era of student accountability, coupled with high-stakes testing, schools have focused on the alignment of standardized curriculums and assessments. However, developing standardized grading practices are still under examination. Grading serves as an important responsibility, yet many teachers still find the process a challenge of determining which academic and non-academic factors correctly represent student achievement. This qualitative study was designed to examine the grading factors teachers consider when determining student final grades. Middle school language arts teachers from one mid-sized suburban school district in Virginia participated in qualitative interviews. The interviews addressed the following topics: (1) the purposes of grades, (2) the grading factors teachers consider when they grade, (3) the teachers’ influences in determining their practices, and (4) how teachers’ grading practices relate to measurement theory. Overall results in the areas of the purpose of grades, the use of academic and non-academic factors, teachers’ influences, the use of formative and summative assessments, and the need for professional development are consistent with the literature. With respect to how teachers’ practices relate to measurement theory, the findings are consistent with the literature from previous studies. This suggests that although measurement theory experts recommend that achievement factors should be the only factors that determine student grades, the results of this study indicate that teachers use a mixture of variables in determining student grades, known as hodgepodge grading. Recommendations for practice include teacher reflection on determining why they grade, becoming familiar with measurement theory recommendations in terms of using academic factors that measure student achievement, how to use non-academic factors in other ways to support student learning, and providing staff development in the area of grading practices and how practices support measurement standards. ▼ With the enormous scale of massive open online courses (MOOCs), many interesting learning analytics issues are worth studying. Peer grading is one vital issue for addressing the assessment challenge for open-ended assignments or exams while at the same time providing students with an effective learning experience through involvement in the grading process. Most existing MOOC platforms use simple schemes for aggregating peer grades, e.g., taking the median or mean. To enhance these schemes, some recent research attempts have developed machine learning methods under either the cardinal setting (for absolute judgment) or the ordinal setting (for relative judgment). In this thesis, we seek to study both the cardinal and ordinal aspects of peer grading within a common framework. First, we propose novel extensions to some existing probabilistic graphical models for cardinal peer grading. Not only do these extensions give a superior performance in cardinal evaluation, they also outperform conventional ordinal models in ordinal evaluation. Next, we combine cardinal and ordinal models by augmenting ordinal models with cardinal predictions as prior. Such a combination can achieve further performance boosts in both cardinal and ordinal evaluations, suggesting a new research direction for peer grading on MOOCs. Extensive experiments have been conducted using real peer grading data from a course offered by HKUST on the Coursera platform. As another learning analytics issue, dropout prediction, or identifying students at risk of dropping out of a course, is an important problem to study due to the high attrition rate commonly found on many MOOC platforms. The methods proposed recently for dropout prediction apply relatively simple machine learning methods such as support vector machines and logistic regression, which use features that reflect student activities such as watching lecture video and forum activities on a MOOC platform during the study period of a course. Since the features are captured continuously for each student over a period of time, dropout prediction is essentially a time series prediction problem. By regarding dropout prediction as a sequence classification problem, we propose some temporal models for solving it. In particular, based on extensive experiments conducted on two MOOCs offered on Coursera and edX, a recurrent neural network (RNN) model with long short-term memory (LSTM) cells beats the baseline methods as well as our other proposed methods by a large margin.

▼ The overall aim of the work presented in this thesis was to develop methods and strategies for the optimisation process prescribed by legal authorities for medical X-ray imaging. This overall aim was divided into four detailed aims: 1) to analyse and describe the conditions for the optimisation of a given projectional X-ray examination in a digital environment, 2) to develop an overall strategy for the optimisation work in a radiology department, 3) to develop and implement a suitable method for statistical analysis of visual grading characteristics (VGC) data, and, 4) to evaluate the characteristics of the new statistical method by comparison with receiver operating characteristics (ROC) statistical methodology and by simulations. The four aims are coupled to the five papers presented in this thesis. In Paper I, the conditions for the optimisation of a given projectional X-ray examination in a digital environment are analysed and a proposed optimisation strategy, based on the analysis, is described. In Paper II an overall strategy for the prioritisation of the optimisation work in a radiology department is presented. Paper III describes the development of a suitable method for statistical analysis of VGC data, which is implemented in the software VGC Analyzer. In Papers IV and V, the characteristics of the new statistical method are thoroughly evaluated by comparison with ROC statistical methodology and by simulations. The strategies developed helped clarify the prerequisites in the process of optimising medical X-ray imaging and were shown to be useful in clinical applications. However, the objective of optimising the radiation protection in medical use of radiation is not fully clarified in legal requirements, and needs further discussion. The development of resampling methods for statistical analysis of VGC data, implemented in VGC Analyzer, provides a method that is easy to apply in clinical optimisation projects where visual grading is judged to be the appropriate evaluation method.

▼ The research of this thesis is concentrating on the design process of the mechanical components of a smartphone grading device. The output of the grading process is a grade that represents the condition of the smartphone. This kind of grading is used to determine the value of second-hand smartphones and to evaluate whether it is worthwhile to refurbish a phone with defects. The grading process is currently done mostly manually, and the market needs an automated device that can perform grading efficiently and with good fidelity. This thesis is made to OptoFidelity Oy, which is a company that has expertise in the field of test automation and robotics. They have the capability to develop a device that can fulfill the market’s need. The objective of the thesis is to find out what methods and design decisions can be used to make cost-efficient designs of the mechanical components while fulfilling the requirements of the device. Functional and physical requirements are presented based on the principles of the requirements engineering. Standards and directives are studied for defining the safety and ergonomics requirements for this kind of machinery. The design processes are implemented following the guidelines of the VDI standard 2206:2004, which encompasses the V-model and cycle of the problem-solving. The standard is developed for helping with the design of the mechatronic systems. Research methods include benchmarking and a literature study concentrating on materials, manufacturing processes, and components’ costing. The design is done by following design process models and it includes the use of the method of solution variant analyses, which is concentrating on manufacturability, functioning, and cost. This method is used for the design of critical sub-assemblies. The results include the design decision and analyses of the methods that were used to make the cost-efficient design of the device and its critical sub-assemblies. The most suitable options for the critical components are chosen based on the analyses that are done as a part of the cycle of the problem-solving process. The enclosure is decided to be manufactured from steel with a sheet metal work process. The frame structure is decided to be implemented with the machined aluminum plate that is installed onto the frame, which is built from standard aluminum profiles. The smartphone is moved with rollers that are decided to be machined from polyurethane. The base blocks of the mover unit are decided to be machined from aluminum and finished with a black anodizing coating. The device is going to be manufactured based on these design results. OptoFidelity should pay more attention to having clear design processes and proper requirements elicitation in their projects. It is recommended to develop a template for requirements engineering and use more resources for verification of the system elements already in the earlier stages of the design process.
