▼ Geological information has become very essential today in Zambia than ever before. This is in the wake of the mining policy that is intended to woo investors in the mining industry. The Zambian government has since 1990 embarked on the Privatisation exercise of all state owned mining conglomerates. This has brought about the need for vital background information for the new would-be investors. The information used to decide whether to invest in a certain mining activities or whether it is worth exploring for certain minerals in different areas of the country. Information held by the Geological Survey Department contains historical facts about the trend of activities that may have been occuring in those areas - borehole data, traverses, geophysical data, geological data, etc.The Information Section has however, not lived to the expected standards. The storage, retrieval and method of dissermination of geological information in the department require complete change and improvement. There has been massive improvements in the GIS community which the storage, retrieval and dissemination of this information must be compatible with. For instance, investors would ask for digital data and accessing such metadata without having to come GSD.The objective of this study are twofold.The first objective is to give asummary description of the current situation of storage,retrieval and dissemination of geological information in the department. This will also help us to suggest possible changes to the information section and provide possible scenarios for change. Then we identify the requirements that the department would require to implement the changes. The second objective suggests the possibility of establishing an Electronic Front Door as a possible way to improve accessibility to the information in the department. Requirements for its development are thus discussed. A number of recommendations to the department for the successful implementation are enumerated. A quetionnare to assist in identifying the main areas during implementation has been given in the Appendixes.

▼ Geographic Information System (GIS) technology aids in storage, manipulation, processing, analysis and presentation of spatial data sets. GIS can effectively interrogate large multidisciplinary exploration data sets in the search for new mineral exploitation targets. A spatial database, the AGGeneys Exploration Database (AGGED), has been created, comprising exploration data gathered during two decades of exploration for base-metals in the Aggeneys area, Bushmanland, South Africa. AGGED includes data extracted from analog maps, as well as digital remotely sensed sources, stored in vector and raster data structures, respectively. Vector data includes field based observations such as the extent of outcropping geological units, litho- and chrono-stratigraphic data; structural data; laboratory data based on regional geochemical stream sediment and traverse sampling; cadastral data and known mineral occurrences. Raster data includes Landsat satellite TM imagery and airborne magnetic data. Spatial variation within single data maps are examined. Spatial correlation between three different data maps are facilitated using colour analysis of hue, saturation and value components in a perceptual colour model. Simultaneously combining lead and zinc data with Landsat TM and geophysical magnetic data spatially delineates four new "geoscience" anomalies in the area under investigation. Two distinctive anomalies occur on the farms Aroams and Aggeneys. The Aroams anomaly (GSAl) has not been previously recognised, whereas the Aggeneys anomaly (GSA2) has been located before. The two other "geoscience" anomalies, on the farm Haramoep (GSA3 and GSA4 ), are slightly less distinct. Overlaying fold axial trace patterns and anomalies on the farm Haramoep, indicate that F2 and F3 fold structures are closely associated with these two anomalies. The location of the Aroams anomaly occurs along the same east-west trend of the four known major ore-deposits viz. Big Syncline, Broken Hill, Black Mountain and Gamsberg. Extrapolating F2 and F3 fold patterns using magnetic data locates this Aroams anomaly along the F3 axial trace extending from Big Syncline through to Gamsberg. The elevated Pb-Zn geochemical anomaly and structural data associated with the Aroams anomaly makes it a promising future exploitation target. The AGGED database can be expanded both in geographic extent to include surrounding areas, and to allow for inclusion of future surveys. Analytical processing of data in AGGED can also be continued and expanded. GIS is a burgeoning field and developments in GIS technology will impact on the explorationist. Developments in object-oriented and knowledge-based database technologies, visualisation techniques and artificial intelligence, incorporated in future GIS need to be closely monitored and evaluated by geoscience explorationists. Os processos de apropriação, ocupação e manejo das paisagens utilizadas pelo ser humano em seu momento atual têm gerado conflitos que podem acarretar a deterioração de sua qualidade ambiental. Diante de seu constante desenvolvimento e da necessidade de expansão territorial, devem ser propostos novos modelos de planejamento que consideram como premissa principal a manutenção da integridade ambiental e a maximização dos recursos paisagísticos disponíveis. Tendo como base a ecologia de paisagem, esta pesquisa realiza discussão sobre os elementos constituintes das paisagens e a importância da incorporação de conceitos ecológicos no processo de territorialização empreendido pelo ser humano. Como estudo de caso, optou-se por uma área do município de São João da Boa Vista, estado de SP, com potencial para a expansão urbana e conservação de importantes fragmentos remanescentes de floresta estacional semidecidual, formação pertencente ao bioma mata atlântica. A área de estudo foi escolhida com base em características biofísicas e de uso e ocupação do solo que ocorrem em todo o município, permitindo a expansão da proposta resultante para outros locais. Por meio da utilização dos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (ArcGIS 9.2 ESRI) para reunir as informações obtidas em levantamentos de campo, pesquisa científica e interpretação de imagem orbital, foram realizadas a identificação e a caracterização dos biótopos antrópicos e naturais que constituem o mosaico paisagístico da área de estudo. Posteriormente, foram elaboradas cartas temáticas que auxiliaram na realização de um estudo preliminar para o planejamento integrado entre o meio antrópico e o natural. Partindo-se do princípio da conservação e da utilização racional e sustentável dos elementos naturais, foram propostos quatro espaços com níveis específicos de uso: de proteção dos recursos ambientais, de conectividade, de amortecimento e de interação entre ser humano e natureza. Como resultado, foi obtida uma carta temática com o cenário ambiental pretendido, fornecendo uma contribuição aos tomadores de decisão e à sociedade civil na condução de um planejamento municipal com responsabilidade ambiental.

Landscape appropriation, occupation and management processes currently used by human beings have generated conflicts which may lead to environmental quality deterioration. In face of its constant development and the need for territorial expansion, new planning models must be proposed considering as main premise the maintenance of environmental integrity and maximization of available scenic resources. Based on scenery ecology, this research discusses the elements of landscape and the importance of integrating ecological concepts in territorial process undertaken by humans. ▼ Η παρούσα διατριβή έχει ως στόχο τη διερεύνηση των τεχνικογεωλογικών συνθηκών που επικρατούν στη λεκάνη Δυτικής Θεσσαλίας, με χρήση και εφαρμογή των Γεωγραφικών Συστημάτων Πληροφοριών, καθώς επίσης τον προσδιορισμό και τη στατιστική επεξεργασία των τιμών των γεωμηχανικών χαρακτηριστικών των τεταρτογενών αποθέσεων που δομούν το πεδινό της τμήμα. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό σχεδιάστηκαν ογδόντα (80) θεματικοί χάρτες με χρήση Γεωγραφικών Συστημάτων Πληροφοριών, από τους οποίους επιλέχτηκαν τελικά για παρουσίαση, εντός και εκτός κειμένου, οι πενήντα εννέα (59). Επίσης, συντάχτηκε πλήθος πινάκων, σχημάτων, χαρτογραφικών ή στατιστικών διαγραμμάτων, ενώ παράλληλα παρουσιάστηκε σειρά φωτογραφιών. Αναλυτικότερα, δίνεται κατ΄αρχήν το τεχνικογεωλογικό πλαίσιο της λεκάνης στην οποία εντάσσεται η παραπάνω έρευνα, με βάση την ανάλυση και σύνθεση στοιχείων που αναφέρονται στις γεωμορφολογικές και κλιματολογικές συνθήκες, το υδρομετεωρολογικό καθεστώς, τη σεισμικότητα και σεισμική επικινδυνότητα, τη λιθολογική σύσταση και δομή των σχηματισμών, τις υδρογεωλογικές και υδρολιθολογικές συνθήκες, καθώς και τις αποσαθρωτικές και διαβρωτικές διεργασίες των γεωλογικών σχηματισμών που δομούν την περιοχή έρευνας. Ακολούθως, παρουσιάζονται αναλυτικά οι τεχνικογεωλογικές συνθήκες που επικρατούν στη λεκάνη Δυτικής Θεσσαλίας και συντάχτηκε τεχνικογεωλογικός χάρτης σε κλίμακα 1:100.000. Στον εν λόγω χάρτη διακρίνονται είκοσι τρείς (23) τεχνικογεωλογικές ενότητες, έξι (6) για τις τεταρτογενείς αποθέσεις, δύο (2) για τους μεταλπικούς σχηματισμούς (νεογενή και μολάσσες) και δέκα πέντε (15) για τους σχηματισμούς του αλπικού υποβάθρου. Ο χάρτης αυτός συνοδεύεται από αναλυτικό Υπόμνημα. Στη συνέχεια, αναλύονται τα γεωμηχανικά χαρακτηριστικά (φυσικές ιδιότητες και μηχανικές παράμετροι) των τεταρτογενών αποθέσεων της περιοχής έρευνας, περιγράφεται η Βάση Γεωτεχνικών Δεδομένων που δημιουργήθηκε και παρατίθεται στατιστική ανάλυση των τιμών από τις παραπάνω παραμέτρους, καθώς και των αποτελεσμάτων από τις επί τόπου δοκιμές πρότυπης διείσδυσης και υδροπερατότητας. Ειδικότερα, έγινε συγκέντρωση, αξιολόγηση, τυποποίηση και καταγραφή-αρχειοθέτηση στην παραπάνω Βάση Δεδομένων των Γεωτεχνικών Πληροφοριών οι οποίες προέρχονται από 1.039 γεωτρήσεις που είχαν εκτελέσει διάφοροι φορείς του Δημόσιου και ιδιωτικού τομέα στο πεδινό τμήμα της λεκάνης Δυτικής Θεσσαλίας. Συνολικά καταχωρήθηκαν 22.463 εγγραφές σε έξι (6) Πίνακες, που στον καθένα αποθηκεύονται διαφορετικά τμήματα της γεωπληροφορίας. Επίσης, πραγματοποιήθηκε λεπτομερής ανάλυση του τεχνικoγεωλογικού πλαισίου και των σημαντικότερων παραμέτρων που υπεισέρχονται στο πρόβλημα των κατολισθήσεων. Ακολούθως, έγινε στατιστική επεξεργασία των στοιχείων της Βάσης Δεδομένων Κατολισθήσεων που δημιουργήθηκε και διερευνήθηκαν αναλυτικά οι σημαντικότεροι από τους παράγοντες που θεωρούνται υπεύθυνοι για την εκδήλωση κατολισθητικών φαινομένων και λαμβάνονται υπόψη στην εκτίμηση των επιδεκτικών προς κατολίσθηση περιοχών. ▼ The investigation of engineering-geological conditions of the Western Thessaly basin and the analysis of geomechanical characteristics of the Quaternary deposits, which occur in the flat part of the region, are examined in this thesis. In this framework, eighty (80) thematic maps have been produced using Geographic Information Systems. In addition, many tables, drawings, cartographic or statistical diagrams have been created. Moreover, a large number of photographs are also presented.The engineering-geological framework of the basin is given in detail, based on the analysis and composition of collected data, regarding, specifically, the geomorphological and hydrometeorological conditions, the seismicity and seismic hazard, the lithological characteristics and structure of the geological formations, the hydrogeological conditions, as well as the weathering and erosion processes exhibited in the geological formations that occur in the basin.Furthermore, an engineering-geological map of the Western Thessaly basin at a scale of 1:100,000 has been compiled, aiming to facilitate both urban planning and industrial development of the basin’s wider area. It is considered that this map may well contribute to the optimization of land use planning and improve the allocation and planning of civil engineering projects. The formations encountered in the basin are grouped into twenty three (23) engineering-geological unities, with regard to their geotechnical behaviour.The entire study, engaged to this thesis, was basically based on data from both in situ investigations and geotechnical information derived and evaluated from the utilisation of 1,039 existing boreholes and trial pits, in the plain part of the Western Thessaly basin. Totally 22,463 records were created and allocated in six (6) Tables. In each one of these tables different kind of geo-information were stored. The values of the above parameters were critically examined. Besides, statistical analysis was carried out on Standard Penetration and Permeability Tests result. All the geotechnical characteristics of the Quaternary deposits (physical properties and mechanical parameters) have been analyzed and a Geotechnical Database was created and presented in this thesis.Furthermore, a landslide inventory map of the Western Thessaly basin has been compiled. Many technical reports and studies, which refer to landslide occurrences, mainly obtained from the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) were used to analyse and record all the landslides of the study area. A Database, using Microsoft Access, has been compiled. The connection between the Database system and Geographic Information Systems was established with the defined coordinates of the locations of existing landslide occurrences. After the necessary modifications, 979 landslide events were recorded and digitally stored. ▼ Coal mining activities can result in a variety of environmental issues and, worldwide, one of the greatest threats from coal mining is acid mine drainage (AMD). In the eastern U.S. coal bearing regions, AMD is a wide spread environmental impairment to waterways, especially from abandoned or closed underground coal mines. Pollutional discharge can result from flooding of underground mines, or mine pools, resulting in reactions that create AMD and discharge to surface water. Research has focused on improving reclamation and treatment methods for AMD to address ongoing pollution problems, but there is a need for more reliable prediction methods for use in continued permitting of lands for coal mining. Under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), coal companies are required to estimate the post-mining water levels to determine if a mine pool will form and if there may be a pollutional discharge, but there is a lack of a science-based method for determining the hydrologic response to mining. This thesis sought to address the gap in prediction by expanding previously explored parameters of mine pool formation in post-SMCRA mines through expanding previous multivariate statistical analyses. Analyses were done in both the Unscrambler X and Neuroshell. An algorithm produced in Neuroshell, an artificial neural network program, resulted in the least amount of error and was incorporated into a tool for modeling post-mining potentiometric head elevation through ArcGIS Pro model building function. The predictive tool developed in ArcGIS Pro was made to output points of predicted post-mining water levels. The tool only requires input of data that would be required for an underground mine permit application. This work has continued the work of an ongoing project to provide mine companies and regulators with a predictive ArcGIS tool that determines if a mine pool will form and discharge to the surface. This project’s final output is an empirically predictive ArcGIS tool that is publicly available for download to be used as a new approach to science-based estimation of underground mining effects on area hydrology. Methods used to develop both the algorithm and the tool in ArcGIS Pro can be used in other coal bearing regions around the world to develop a similarly useful tool for understanding connections between hydrology and underground mining. ▼ Predicting spatial patterns and intensity of soil erosion and deposition in landscapes is problematic in areas where few experimental data are available. Yet it is in these regions that the ability to extrapolate local field evidence could be most useful for locating the sources of sediments. This thesis aims at using and further developing existing spatially distributed erosion models, in combination with different geo-information techniques, in data-scarce environments. The results of applying five model approaches were compared as regards their ability to represent erosion and sedimentation phenomena at the regional and catchment scales over an area of some 54,100 km2and 59.8 km, respectively. Global climate, topography and soil datasets and low-resolution satellite images for land cover were used at the regional scale, whereas fine- to medium-resolution (5 to 90 m</st1:metricconverter>) satellite data for land cover and topography were used at the catchment scale. Model validation indicated a reasonable model agreement in terms of spatial patterns; however, none of the models was accurate in terms of absolute values and therefore these soil loss estimates should be interpreted with caution.<o:p></o:p>At the local scale, three reservoirs were surveyed using a novel acoustic sonar and GPS-driven technique to understand the processes of sediment delivery to the catchment outlet. The sedimentation rate in the reservoirs varied according to thephysiography, topography, climate and reservoir hydraulic conditions. Finally, the linkages between catchment gross erosion rates and reservoir sedimentation were analysed using spatially distributed sediment delivery ratio (SDR) concepts. The catchment sediment yield predictions obtained by coupling the gross erosion and the SDR estimates were validated using the reservoir sediment records. ▼ The purpose of this thesis was to develop an integrated management framework of raw data that was designed to investigate the engineering geological behavior of the geological formations. Specifically, the investigation was to assess the landslide susceptibility, implementation of which was conducted in an area of Xanthi Prefecture, Greece. The development of landslide susceptibility zones was achieved through the application of spatial predictive models that made use of techniques and methods from the scientific branch of Machine Learning and Data Mining. For the purposes of the methodological approach presented in the thesis, eight (8) spatial variables were selected, which correspond to the primary geomorphological and geotechnical data. In particular, the created Layers of Information were related to: the altitude, the morphological gradient, the direction of morphological gradient, the engineering geological units, the distance from the geological boundaries, the distance from the tectonic features, the distance from the hydrographic network and the distance from the road network. The formation of the classes for each Layer of Information where achieved by combining the outcomes of the performed statistical analysis and the knowledge and experience of landslide experts. The indexing of past, archival landslide event material, the examination of the aerial photographs but mostly the field observation helped to create a relevant data set of 163 landslide events. The data set was "enriched" with data that correspond to areas that showed scant chance of failure, characterized as stable slopes. The estimation of the stable slopes was based on the metric distance Mahalanobis that was calculated between each grid cell of the study area and the "characteristic cell failure". The calculated distance was used by a classifier that created two (2) data sets with two (2) possible states that could characterize the grid cell, stable and an unstable. These two (2) data sets were combined to a single set that was used as the basic training data set for each of the prediction models developed in this thesis. Regarding the predictive models, four (4) predictions models were formed. Specifically: A prediction model, Similarity Index Model, which incorporates a modified machine learning algorithm, k-NN, nearest neighbor. A prediction model, Decision Tree Model, which incorporates a modified Decision Tree algorithm, with certainty factors for each produced rule, estimated by the statistical method, Certainty Factor. A prediction model based on the principles of Artificial Neural Networks, Artificial Neural Network Model, that incorporates a back propagation algorithm, and also a modified algorithm with the help of which, it was possible to estimate the optimal architecture of the Neural Network. In this thesis the engineering geological conditions in Achaia prefecture are examined, in order to find materials suitable for aggregates. The general, geometrical, physical and mechanical parameters of the sand and gravel deposits examined as they are in abundance in the wider area in order to locate areas suitable for the quarrying of low quality aggregates. Moreover limestone representative samples were examined as crushed stone aggregates. Issues such as location, abundance, type and quality and general characteristics of aggregate addressed using GIS technology, while because statutory regulations, technological capabilities and available funding change with time, the maps are designed to provide a resource data base that will be useful over the years. The main problems of the examined deposits are the localy high percentage of filler which deminish the results of the sand equivalent and the quite high percentage of chert content which deminish their density and increase their soundness.

Σκοπός της διατριβής είναι η διερεύνηση των τεχνικογεωλογικών συνθηκών στο Νομό Αχαΐας σχετικά με την αναζήτηση αδρανών υλικών για διάφορες χρήσεις. Εξετάζονται οι γενικές, γεωμετρικές, φυσικές και μηχανικές ιδιότητες των χαλαρών αποθέσεων του Νομού οι οποίες βρίσκονται σε αφθονία στην περιοχή και μπορούν να αποτελέσουν φυσικά κοιτάσματα απόληψης αδρανών υλικών χαμηλής ποιότητας και των ασβεστολιθικών σχηματισμών που χρησιμοποιούνται κατά βάση για την παραγωγή θραυστών αδρανών. Δημιουργήθηκε βάση δεδομένων με τη βοήθεια των Γεωγραφικών Συστημάτων Πληροφοριών όπου αποτυπώνονται σε χάρτες οι περιοχές που πληρούν τα κριτήρια για να χρησιμοποιηθούν ως πηγές λήψης αδρανών υλικών με στόχο την ορθολογική διαχείριση. Τα κυριότερα προβλήματα που παρουσιάζουν οι χαλαρές αδρομερείς αποθέσεις που εξετάστηκαν είναι το μεγάλο ποσοστό παιπάλης σε πολλές περιοχές καθώς και η παρουσία κερατολιθικού υλικού που φτάνει σε ποσοστό μέχρι και 23%.

▼ This thesis developed is framed within the scope of the Environmental Sciences. Environmental Geology is applied to understand the geological processes and resources that take place in the area, thus enhancing the management of the territory. All the littoral area within the hydrographical basins of the Aubi, riera de Calonge, Ridaura, riera de Tossa and riera de Lloret (75 km of coast line and an extension of 291 sq.km), a good part of the southern Costa Brava, has been selected as the study zone. This work, with its ability to integrate the concepts and methods of the Environmental and Geological Sciences, has three main objectives: the analysis of the quality and the physical and chemical behaviour of the terrestrial materials in front of human actions and its utilization as resources; the study of the natural processes and the influences that they have on the antropic activity, or the effects that this can cause on those; and as a derivation of the previous objectives, the design and application of preventive instruments for the management of the territory, that is to say, the planning of the uses of the territory. Considering geological factors as helping elements to achieve an integral vision of a territory, different geoenvironmental variables have been studied. It has been tried to translate the acquired knowledge into information which could be used by the planners of this coastal environment for their decision making process. The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been a key factor to keep a systemic vision of the territory. They have also made possible the integration of the different geoenvironmental variables, as well as the cartographic production. With regard to the geological processes related to the fluviotorrencial dynamics, the main areas of their action have been mapped. The factors that initiate, favor or increase their occurrence have been analysed as well. The denudation actions, processes of transportation and sedimentation have also been studied. With the integrated study of all these processes and resultant forms, several territorial units characterized by a uniform geomorphic behaviour have been identified. With the analysis of the geological resources, we have contributed to the knowledge of the subterranean water resources, the industrial rocks and the coastal georesources. With regard to the first item we have put most of our efforts in the delimitation of the main aquifer units and subunits, as well as in the study of their geometries and their main hydraulic characteristics. With regard to the mining activity, the fundamental objective has been the cartographic delimitation of those materials which, by their physiochemical properties, are potentially apt for the indicated uses. Finally a study oriented to the factors that limit or condition the geotouristic potential of this littoral area has been done, specifically at the cliffs and in the beaches. Landscape appropriation, occupation and management processes currently used by human beings have generated conflicts which may lead to environmental quality deterioration. In face of its constant development and the need for territorial expansion, new planning models must be proposed considering as main premise the maintenance of environmental integrity and maximization of available scenic resources. Based on scenery ecology, this research discusses the elements of landscape and the importance of integrating ecological concepts in territorial process undertaken by humans. As a case study, an area from the municipal district of São João da Boa Vista in São Paulo state, with potential for urban expansion and conservation of important remaining fragments of seasonal semideciduous forest belonging to the atlantic forest biome, was selected. The study area was chosen based on its biophysical characteristics, use and land occupation, which occur throughout the district, allowing the expansion of the resulting proposal to other areas. Anthropogenic and natural biotopes identification and characterization, which compose the study area scenery mosaic, were conducted using Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS 9.2 ESRI) in order to unify the information gathered in field surveys, scientific research and satellite image interpretation. Afterwards, thematic maps were generated assisting the accomplishment of a preliminary study aimed to integrate planning between anthropic and natural environment. Starting from the conservation principle, reasonable and sustainable use of natural resources, four spaces were proposed with specific use levels: protection of environmental resources, connectivity, buffering and interaction between humans and nature. As a result, a thematic map was developed with the desired environmental scenario, providing guidelines to decision makers and civil society in order to conduct municipal planning along with environmental responsibility.

Os processos de apropriação, ocupação e manejo das paisagens utilizadas pelo ser humano em seu momento atual têm gerado conflitos que podem acarretar a deterioração de sua qualidade ambiental. Diante de seu constante desenvolvimento e da necessidade de expansão territorial, devem ser propostos novos modelos de planejamento que consideram como premissa principal a manutenção da integridade ambiental e a maximização dos recursos paisagísticos disponíveis. Tendo como base a ecologia de paisagem, esta pesquisa realiza discussão sobre os elementos constituintes das paisagens e a importância da incorporação de conceitos ecológicos no processo de territorialização empreendido pelo ser humano. ▼ This research was initiated by the implementation of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60 (WFD) in Greece for the typology of abiotic parameters in relation to the ecological quality of surface water.Significant questions came in the attempt to use the results and data of previous research, due to the lack of a specific framework for the spatial-temporal distribution and continuity of data for the study of hydromorphological, geological and climate parameters. A key part of the research is to define this framework. The watersheds of North Greece were studied and their corresponding geological maps of scale 1:500.000 and 1:50.000 were digitised. The hydrographic network of 14 study areas was digitised using topographic maps of scale 1:50.000 and by ArcMap 10.3 with DEM. Sampling took place, in a three year period, at 9 reference stations and 5 highly altered sites. Chemical analysis of water samples and sedimentological-mineralogical analysis of sediment took place. The precipitation and temperature data (1.500.000 measurements) of 85 stations (1930-2010) were divided in different time periods and areas in order to determine their optimal spatial-temporal distribution. Climate classification by Köppen, Annual Temperature Range and CGI climate indicators were studied. Thematic maps of temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration by Turc, Coutagne and Thornthwaite with the methods of IDW, Spline, Kriging, were produced and evaluated by a control group. Seventeen hydromorphological parameters were studied for possible correlation among them and with the maximum flood by Giandotti.Having in mind the definition of an appropriate framework with defined methodologies and open access data; only conclusions accompanied by corresponding methodology and data are presented in this thesis. Specifically the researcher had 48 main conclusions and the most important are: For optimal climate classification, the minimum spatial distribution of stations is 1 per 2.000 km2, all data should be of the same period with a minimum duration of 30 years and completeness >75%. The use of lower quality data is not acceptable. North Greece’s map, with Köppen climate classification (Cfb-Csa-Cfa), was created and climate change was identified within 1950-2004.When using geological maps of scale 1:50.000 the river watershed geology is highly correlated with the mineralogical analysis of the sediment in contrast to maps of scale1:500.000. The runoff coefficient map of scale 1:500.000 is 57,14% less accurate than of scale 1:50.000. The mean annual surface runoff can be used alternatively for the maximum flood by Giandotti with an accuracy of R2= 99,57%. The use of watershed size is not acceptable. The calculation of stream order by Strahler using the ArcMap method and using DEM (ASTER), versus 1:50.000 topographic maps, is effective 92,86% when 1st and 2nd torrents are removed.
