▼ This study explores the potential of a Hollywood
genre film to disestablish those retrogressive gender, ethnic and cultural representations that are frequently encoded in the tropes of Hollywood
genre cinema. To that end, the study engages in a close analysis of six Hollywood
genre films released between 2000 and 2015. These films are identifiably
genre works that nonetheless appear to reconfigure key structuring tropes of their
genre. The analysis gives rise to a set of strategies toward the creation of a cinema that offers the pleasures of the Hollywood
genre film form, while tending to resist such retrogressive gender, ethnic and cultural representations as are typically encoded within that form. This set of strategies then informs an original screenplay, presented as an Appendix to this work. The six films under discussion are selected from the Hollywood
genre oeuvre of three directors: Kathryn Bigelow, Jane Campion and Ang Lee. Each film is rooted in a recognizable
genre idiom or combination of
genre idioms. Divided into six chapters, the study focuses on one film per chapter, beginning with an overview of the film's generic provenance. Establishing the dominant contemporary conventions and tropes of that
genre, each film is then examined as it reproduces, recodes or otherwise reframes those conventions by focussing on the film's three constitutive elements: its construction of protagonist, its presentation of gender and ethnic relations, and its expression of cultural context. The study reveals that all six films deploy a specific set of strategies in their engagement with
genre idiom. All six begin by signalling, through their three constitutive elements, an adherence to familiar
genre tropes, prompting clear
genre recognition. The films then reconfigure, recode or otherwise reframe selected tropes of their
genre to produce challenging, counter-generic meanings that disestablish certain conventions of representation, while remaining within the idiom of their chosen
genre. However, the study concludes that the recoding of certain
genre-typical thematic polarities can serve to disestablish one form of hegemonic representation, while effectively reproducing another form, a strategy that results in partial disruption and partial reinforcement of retrogressive
genre norms. Informed by the set of strategies thus established, the original screenplay Sea Fever is presented as an Appendix to this work.

▼ This dissertation argues that twenty-first-century
American novels, comics, and films are increasingly showing that
popular, paraliterary genre fiction is a deep resource for
historical representation. "Pulp historiography" is a new branch in
the evolution of historical fiction, marking the junction of
postmodernist historiography and the "generic turn" of recent
literary history. Its practitioners participate in various
paraliterary and literary genres within single works by alternating
between or hybridizing distinct conventions. This jarring approach
denaturalizes the templates of literary realism and professional
historiography that dominate representations of the past. Pulp
historiography thus exposes the way that genre conventions – and the
cultural hierarchy that privileges certain genres above
others – shape historical knowledge. Moreover, pulp historiography
uses the metaphors, plots, and representational strategies of
paraliterature – including comics, fantasy, mysteries, science
fiction, and Westerns – to narrate history in powerful, new ways.
While this engagement with popular forms might seem to extend the
high/low dialectic of modernism and postmodernism, this
dissertation argues that it is less a pastiche of paraliterary
traditions than a participation in them. For twenty-first-century
historical fiction, the narrative forms of mass entertainment are
complex traditions that both have a history and have much to say
about history. The genre mash-ups analyzed in Pulp Historiography
bear out this historiographic potential. Junot Díaz's The Brief
Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) uses science fiction and fantasy
to fill gaps in the traumatic history of Dominicans during and
after the Trujillo dictatorship. Michael Chabon's The Yiddish
Policemen's Union (2007) synthesizes hardboiled detective fiction
and alternate-history science fiction to simulate a sense of the
precariousness of modern Jewish history. Mat Johnson and Warren
Pleece's Incognegro: A Graphic Mystery (2008) revises superhero
comics, detective mysteries, passing narratives, and anti-lynching
journalism to illustrate how the history of racial representation
fueled the history of racial violence in the Jim Crow South. And
Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's The Hurt Locker (2008) and Zero
Dark Thirty (2012) and Clint Eastwood and Jason Hall's American
Sniper (2014) fuse documentary aesthetics, Orientalist tropes, and
the American frontier myth to narrate the "war on terror" as a
Western writ large.

▼ This thesis examines the implications of musical genre
for American songwriter Tom Waits’ 1985 studio album Rain Dogs. A
discussion of recording artists and composers of the twentieth
century that influenced Waits at this time serves to identify the
multiple styles within which he writes and performs. Descriptive
analyses of each of the album’s nineteen tracks highlight salient
musical elements to demonstrate how these pieces fit within
specific styles. Finally, a music and text analysis demonstrates
how Waits’ performance of multiple musical genres, each with their
own encoded historical and cultural associations, affects the
thematic content and narrative structure of the
album.

▼ This dissertation examines the shifting set of formal and conceptual relations that have structured the intertwined development and reception of “the novel” and “poetry” since the Romantic period. In Part One, I focus on the continuing rise of the novel in the age of best-selling poetry, arguing that narrative poetry and the novel participated in a shared history of narrative innovation. I take the popular and formally innovative poems of Walter Scott as a particularly important example of poetry’s contribution to this shared history. Specifically, I argue that Scott’s knowledge of the ballad tradition and his modern experiments with poetry in that mode enabled him to introduce narrative techniques into the novel that prepare the way for the deployment of free indirect discourse in the novels of Jane Austen and her successors. More broadly, I attempt to describe a theory of generic interrelation that is capable of identifying and explaining the interrelated formal
development of works written during the Romantic period. In Part Two, I work to recover and analyze the complex history of perceptions about
genre from the Romantic period through the twentieth century. Since the Romantic period itself, many thinkers have been interested in identifying what is essentially poetic about poetry, and, as a closely related matter, in determining what can distinguish poetry from prose and the novel. But, as narrative poetry has declined in popularity, and as the novel has emerged as the dominant modern
genre, the terms of these discussions—and the experiences and expectations of reading that prompt them—have not remained static. The reception of Lord Byron’s Don Juan provides a particularly fascinating example of this gradual change in generic perception. While in the nineteenth century there was a widespread conviction that the poem was too shockingly inappropriate to really qualify as “Poetry”—a poem that was not at all poetic—by the twentieth century
critics are praising it for its novelistic features. I trace the long history of Don Juan’s reception as a way of drawing attention to an underappreciated feature of literary history: that perceptions of genres themselves are
subject to historical change.

▼ Gothic studies, the specialist academic field that explores the Gothic text, has
developed substantially over the last twenty-five years. The field often frames the
Gothic as a serious literature, involved in historic discourse, and having special
psychological acuity; this thesis suggests that there are a number of problems with
these argumentative strategies, and that the academy now makes claims for the Gothic
that are discontinuous with how this popular
genre is understood by most readers.
While Gothic studies is the study of a
genre, curiously, it has seldom engaged
with theorisations of
genre. Nevertheless, an understanding of what
genre is, and how
it alters reading practice, is crucial to understanding the Gothic text. This thesis
attempts to reconcile and develop a number of disparate approaches to
genre through
Pierre Bourdieu's notion of habitus. It argues that
genre is not a set of textual
conventions but a group of procedures that facilitate and modify both writing and
reading practices. Consequently, genres like the Gothic should be seen as discrete
historicised phenomena, which retain a cohesive practical sense of how they ought to
be performed before they hold discursive properties. Rather than arguing for the
literary value of the Gothic, this thesis understands the
genre as a popular practice.
The consequences of this theorisation of the Gothic are explored in case studies of
particular moments in three separate Gothic fields.
Firstly, the American Gothic of the mid-nineteen-eighties, particularly Stephen
King's It, Joyce Carol Oates' Mysteries of Winterthurn, and Toni Morrison's Beloved,
facilitates a discussion of the relationship between Gothic and literary practices. The
Gothic text has its origins in 'lowbrow' popular culture, even as it sometimes aspires
to 'highbrow' literary performances.
Secondly, the English Gothic of the nineteen-sixties is used to stage a
discussion of both the way that readers become involved and immersed in the Gothic
text, creating a distinct subjunctive 'world', and of the way that Gothics define
themselves in relation to each other. The discussion refers to Dennis Wheatley's The
Devil Rides Out, which heavily influenced the field, as demonstrated in works by
Susan Howatch, Kingsley Amis, Robert Aickman and Mervyn Peake. Wheatley's
depiction of the black mass became a key Gothic procedure, and can be read as this
particular field's metaphor of its own practice.
Thirdly, New Zealand's underdeveloped Gothic field provides a venue to
explore the Gothic's relationship with nation and national literature, and how the
practice is involved in landscape. Frank Sargeson's stories and his novella The
Hangover, together with Janet Frame's A State of Siege are texts authored by
canonical New Zealand writers that participate in a local Gothic, although their
participation in popular
genre has been little recognised.
This thesis argues that the Gothic is a commonsense cultural practice,
facilitated through the canniness of habitus.

▼ Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää, millainen on Suomen Musiikintekijät ry -järjestön julkaisemien lausuntojen tuottamisprosessi ja millaisia tekstilajipiirteitä järjestön lausunnoilla on. Lisäksi tarkastelussa on lausuntopyyntöjen vaikutus lausuntoteksteihin.
Haastateltavana on järjestön toiminnanjohtaja.
Analyysien perusteella järjestön toiminnanjohtaja on päävastuussa lausunnoista.

▼ This thesis takes the critical response generated by Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant, his most recent novel, as an invitation to re-examine the overall literary ‘experiment’ of his body of work. Ishiguro’s novels, regardless of their
genre, message, or cultural moment, create experiences in which the reader engages with each narrator as if they were a human being. His attention to stylistic and formal detail foregrounds our awareness of his art in each text, and much scholarship focuses on overarching discussions of memory, identity, and history; however, this all relies upon the empathy that the texts generate between the character-narrator and the reader. The commitment to mimesis over the synthetic or thematic dimensions of the text, to draw on the theoretical model of character presented by James Phelan, often remains covert throughout each novel, but character mimesis nevertheless acts as both an accessible entry point to the novels, and a consistent touchstone throughout and across the texts.
Upon the publication of The Buried Giant, Ishiguro was met with criticism and dissatisfaction from numerous reviewers and scholars, despite general public appreciation of the novel. At the heart of this dissatisfaction lies a sense that Ishiguro’s foray into fantasy lacks the affective power of his iconic artlessness. Specifically, The Buried Giant appears to lack a central, consistent, human voice to hold together the synthetic and thematic work that the text performs.
This thesis presents an argument that finds within The Buried Giant the presence of a first-person voice that, rather than diverging from each of Ishiguro’s previous narrators, takes his experimentation with the first-person voice to a new extreme. This reading allows me to locate The Buried Giant more squarely back in conversation with the rest of Ishiguro’s oeuvre, by identifying a covert but vital thread that exists beneath the shifts in
genre, thematic and synthetic choices, and context of the novel. I explore the establishment of character mimesis across Ishiguro’s body of work, how this feeds into both the dissatisfaction with The Buried Giant and my reconciliation of the novel to his earlier works, and finally how The Buried Giant and its shift to both a covert narrative voice and the
genre of fantasy provides an opportunity to re-examine Ishiguro’s use of non-mimetic structures and generic conventions in his first six novels around the central, mimetic narrator.
As suggested, this approach draws significantly on the theory of character presented by James Phelan, which allows for comprehensive consideration of diverse textual functions that occur both throughout a given text and across several texts of widely varying genres and perspectives. I touch on notions of unreliability, memory and subjective history, trauma, and identity performance, each of which are central to many pieces of scholarship on Ishiguro’s novels; however, the aim of this project is to swiftly push beyond readings that prioritise synthetic and thematic dimensions of the…

▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2012.
The present study aimed to document the ontogenetic development of Japanese EFL writers' rhetorical awareness, writing performances, and their lexicogrammatical choices as they engaged in carefully designed genre-based tasks over one academic year. The two-semester sequence of writing courses were designed based on the Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) perspective on genre learning (Martin & Rose, 2008). Instruction also integrated the genres into tasks (Byrnes, 2006) with the guidance from task-based language teaching (TBLT) principles (Norris, 2009). A total of 30 students divided into two different proficiency levels (15 in a higher proficiency group and 15 in a lower proficiency group) participated in the study. A triangulated inquiry was employed by gathering naturalistic data from intact classes: questionnaires, interviews, free writing, teacher-researcher field notes, and pre-instructional and post-instructional writing samples produced by the students at the two different periods of each semester. Findings showed that as the students engaged in the SFL-informed genre tasks, their concerns shifted to more genre-specific rhetorical issues that could accommodate the needs of the given context. The comparisons of their pre-and post-instructional writing tasks showed that enhanced rhetorical awareness affected their actual genre production in terms of their meaning-making language choices. However, proficiency effects were markedly observed in terms of how and to what degree they were able to elaborate grammatically sophisticated expressions to realize a genre. The results suggest that improved genre awareness might enable students to expand their language choices to some extent in a way that allows them to accommodate the genre demands, although their limited language proficiency might impede the expansion of meaning-making resources at a productive level. Explaining this phenomenon based on SFL theory, it can be argued that the ability to use more incongruent and metaphorical grammatical resources may appear at a later stage of a language learning process. Some pedagogical implications are discussed in terms of the interface between a genre-based approach to writing instructions and a task-based approach to language learning.

▼ This project argues for rethinking the western as a global
genre, rather than one rooted in a particular construction of the American West. First, by considering the western's global origins through an examination of early cinema, I challenge the singular connection to an American origin. Through tracing an alternative history of the
genre in early cinema, we can see that the assumed connections between America and the western can be challenged by way of examples from France, Argentina, and Australia. Moving to the post-war and contemporary periods, this project highlights the popular and political uses of the
genre by way of examples from Germany, Latin America, Spain and Italy, and Australia. These case studies identify how considering the western as a global popular
genre allows it to address local political concerns across a range of national and transnational contexts. To situate the different contexts, this thesis relies on the broad theoretical framework of transculturation, following Mary Louise Pratt, to consider how the western 'selects' and 'invents' from particular historical, cultural, and political moments, often as part of asymmetrical power relations. Each case study also seeks to provide a theoretical framework specific to the local context, such as the theories and practices of Third Cinema in Latin America, in order to suggest ways of addressing the western outside of Hollywood. By shifting the western away from a central origin point, this thesis shows how the
genre becomes meaningful on a global scale in terms of key issues of identity, political critique, and representations of space.

▼ With this paper the aim is to find out whether there are any differences in how five students from the north part of Africa structures their tales in comparison with the Nordic tale "The emperor‟s new clothes". The purpose is to look at how the genre pedagogy can be said to relate to these differences. What happens to the "deviant" structures?
Based on literature and research on the subject, I have concluded that there are certain patterns of how a tale "should" be structured based on Western standards. These text structures are seen as typical for the genre and are therefore, in accordance with the subject plans, reproduced in the classroom. In the analysis of the student´s texts there has been shown and a rather large variation in how the tales are structured.

The present research is dedicated to the contemporary sonnet in Russia and in France. It traces the evolution of the sonnet in both countries and focuses on works of five French and five Russian poets. Louis Aragon, Robert Desnos, Yves Bonnefoy, Jacques Roubaud, Laurent Fourcaut are juxtaposed to Yuri Veynert and Yakov Kharon, Joseph Brodsky, Victor Sosnora, Alexei Tsvetkov, Timur Kibirov. The period under study goes from 1940s to now. The thesis deals with structural components of the sonnet as a poetic form and a genre in order to reveal the possible levels of reading and to establish relationship between the contemporary works and the sonnet tradition. The study highlights four major themes that are love, politics, death and game.

Reading skills among Swedish students are falling and, above all exhibited a significant difference between children with Swedish as their first language, or as a second language. To change a trend similar to that found in Australia in the 1980s developed the genre pedagogy. Genre Pedagogy implies a parallel development between language and subject knowledge and is based on three theories: Vygotsky's sociocultural perspectives on learning, Hallidays systematic - functional grammar and Rotherys and Martin's school genres and the cycle of teaching and learning. The idea behind this approach is that while students learn, they will even learning the subject-specific language meta-language and in this way all students get the same opportunities to develop their knowledge. The purpose of this study is also to look at how and if the five surveyed teachers in grades preschool to third grade to teach are using the genre pedagogy in the subject Swedish with focus on literary reading. I want to see what they consider to be the advantages of working with genre pedagogy in their teaching. The method I used in this study is qualitative interviews. The results from the study shows that all the five interviewed teachers work with reading in school varied radically, and that their experience and knowledge of the genre pedagogy working method is different. They showed their support for the approach and sees advantages to the students become more engaged in and motivated to read. In addition,…

genre.

▼ Dissertation under the direction of Professor Douglas A. Knight
The story of Esther has a complex history of transmission and interpretation. This project examines the Hebrew (Masoretic Text) and Greek versions (Septuagint and Alpha Text) in order to understand how and why the texts depict the practices of fasting, prayer and circumcision differently. The lenses of historical criticism, literary criticism and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice shed light on the relationship of the texts both to one another and to their ancient socio-historical contexts. Both practices and religious texts play important roles in an individual's and group's identity and relationship to others, and the versions of Esther indicate different understandings of Judean/Jewish identity in the Diaspora.
Each main body chapter highlights a particular practice related to Judean/Jewish identity and religion: fasting, prayer and circumcision. After engaging historical criticism in order to understand how the versions relate to each other developmentally, investigations of ideology and identity point to different perspectives associated with positions and power relations within the empires of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. In general, the history of redaction of each version is complex, so that the Masoretic Text, for example, is more developed than the Greek versions in some places in the text and less developed in others. Concerning ideology and identity, the Masoretic Text displays an interest in allegiance within the empire, making no explicit claims about God or Torah. In contrast, the Greek versions retain an interest in this allegiance, but observance of Torah is also vital to Judean/Jewish identity. Yet, each Greek version developed in different times and places, so they also differ with regard to allegiance and the roles the practices play.
Ultimately, each version makes different claims about fasting, prayer and circumcision within larger narrative complexes espousing different notions of Judean/Jewish identity which developed out of different socio-historical contexts in the Second Temple period.

This research paper looks as the building of the epic genre from the Antiquity to the nineteenth century. It's based on a corpus of a dozen works drawn from various countries and centuries (Greek, roman, medieval, Italian Renaissance, eighteenth and nineteenth century France. It aims to take a fresh look at the so-called « epic style ». Although scholars have long considered epos to epitomize poetry and although much debate has been devoted to it, it has remained a fairly elusive form. The purpose of this paper is to lay down a definition of the epic genre to discover the feature rules, taking care not to produce too rigid a definition that would not do justice to the changes that took place between Homer and Hugo. I have therefore examined the works that did not strictly watch the criteria and I put epic into context, branching out to philosophy and archeology, while studying the links between the spoken written and the written versions and Greek ceramic vases. This new approach enables me to challenge intertextuality, to tackle the way poets weave their texts, echoing other people's works and borrowing from them. Reading those works makes me realize that the epic genre puts forward its own three dimensional Weltanschauung; it rests upon the notion of grandeur which allows it to combine harmony and exhaustivity. The character is the chief medium of observation and it seeks…

▼ Ours is a highly digitized society, and accordingly, so are the daily practices of communication in composition classrooms. Students of the digital age bring with them a new and continually evolving language into their college writing, which, while it is indicative of the change in language processes, can be problematic. The impetus for this thesis developed through my experiences teaching first-year composition. Frustrated with the ambiguity of audience in student writing, I would ask students in one-on-one conferences "who is 'you'?" in order to create the opportunity to discuss specific directives of audience. What I came to realize was how often their rhetorical situation changed due to social media and other forms of instant communication. If and when the digital language that forms through social media interferes with the development of student identity and authorial agency as a result of a lack of comprehension to an identified audience. Digital Natives must be approached as multilingual English language learners because they carry with them similar code-switching tendencies into the classroom, which means that it is imperative that recent trend to incorporate blogs and other methods of digital writing be integrated in the classroom as ways to connect students to the language with which they are most familiar. Through the inclusion of digital media in composition classrooms and a careful articulation of the rhetorical situation, students can begin to gain more agency through their writing. Compositionists will be better equipped to prepare students for their collegiate careers in the formative years during enrollment in first-year composition by including narrative, literary, linguistic, and rhetorical traditions in the classroom.

▼ The academic component of this thesis is a critical analysis of the documentary
genre of mountain film. Following a broad evaluation of the place of
genre within documentary, the thesis examines the history and characteristics of mountain film. I will argue that there is indeed a defined sub-
genre of mountain film and that through critical analysis of films made within this
genre it is possible to trace the emergence of techniques and modes of engagement peculiar to it.
The production of the creative component to the thesis, the film In The Shadow of the Mountain, was informed by this academic component. An understanding of the
genre expectations of the audience and a deliberate use of the recognised techniques of mountain film influenced production choices. Similarly, the experience of producing a film within the
genre provided a practical basis to the approach taken in the written thesis.

▼ This thesis argues that the slasher remake functions as a cumulative hypertext, incorporating content not only from the original film, but also the many sequels and intertexts that exist between original and remake. In doing so, it expands analyses of the film remake beyond issues of fidelity to the original, and shows that sequels and intertexts are a crucial consideration when analysing remakes of franchise or previously adapted films.
The first chapter surveys the slasher sub-genre’s history and place within
genre theory (with specific reference to theories of horror), highlighting the fact that the implication of sequels, cycles and series for
genre theory, and subsequently, the remaking of
genre films, is an area which has been commonly overlooked. The second chapter looks at the history of remake studies, and uses Robert Stam’s concept of the cumulative hypertext (drawn from Gerard Genette’s work on intertextuality) as a theoretical framework within which to consider how the slasher remake draws content from each slasher franchise’s sequels and intertexts, as well as the original film. The third and fourth chapters analyse three slasher remakes, Halloween (2007), Friday the 13th (2009) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) in terms of how they have retained and adapted content from the original franchise, in order to affirm and explicate their function as cumulative hypertext.

▼ This thesis presents a new approach to recommend suitable tracks from a collection of songs to the user. The goal of the system is to recommend songs that are preferred by the user, are fresh to the user's ear, and fit the user's listening pattern. ``Forgetting Curve'' is used to assess freshness of a song and the user log is used to evaluate the preference. I analyze user's listening pattern to estimate the level of interest of the user in the next song. Also, user behavior is treated on the song being played as feedback to adjust the recommendation strategy for the next one. Furthermore, this thesis proposes a method to classify songs in the Million Song Dataset according to song
genre. Since songs have several data types, several sub-classifiers are trained by different types of data. These sub-classifiers are combined using both classifier authority and classification confidence for a particular instance. In the experiments, the combined classifier surpasses all of these sub-classifiers and the SVM classifier using concatenated vectors from all data types. Finally, I develop an application to evaluate our approach in the real world.

▼ This study explores the hierarchy of symbolic value between literary and genre fiction through a discourse analysis of book reviews of chick lit and critically acclaimed books published between 1998-2008 in leading review publications such as The New York Times, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and Booklist. Genre fiction is typically accorded less symbolic value than literary fiction, and, at times, distaste for genre fiction has lead to distaste for its audience. Evidence for these assertions can be found in the type of language employed in book reviews of chick lit and critically acclaimed novels, especially in the use of adjectives, opinion words, as well as terms used to describe writing techniques, characters, authors, and reading publics.

Estelle Maskamen Did I Mention I Love You? (2015), John Greenin Looking for Alaska (2005) ja Suzanne Collinsin The Hunger Games (2008) havainnollistavat tutkielmassani englanninkielisen nuorisokirjallisuuden tilaa 2000-luvulla, johon tutkimukseni keskittyy.
Tämän seurauksena nuorisokirjallisuus erityisesti nuorille suunnattuna kirjallisuutena on kyseenalaistettava, sillä nuorisoromaanien lukijakunta on tänä päivänä valtava ja heterogeeninen, kattaen lukijoita lapsista aikuisiin.
Tutkielmani valossa käy ilmi, että nuorisokirjallisuuden määritteleminen perinteisten kirjallisten genren ominaispiirteiden perusteella on vajavainen tapa luokitella tämän päivän nuorisokirjallisuuden kenttää. 2000-luvun kontekstissa on otettava huomioon myös tekstin ulkoisia tekijöitä, kuten kirjallisuuden todelliset lukijat, markkinoinnin suuntaaminen eri ikäryhmille, ja nuorisokirjallisuuden alan jatkuva kehitys ja kasvu.

▼ The aim of this study is to investigate how two teachers in year three teach writing in their classrooms. The study is focused on how the teachers introduce the tasks, what kind of texts the pupils are writing, if there is an expressed receiver of the texts and how the follow up and assessments of the texts are done. The study has a partial ethnographic approach and the data that is analyzed is based on 19 observations from two classrooms. The study result shows that the variety of text types written is small and the instructions often follow the same pattern each time. It also shows that the tasks often lack both expressed receivers and a structured follow up. Those are often abandoned. The focus on the assessments lies in the correct spelling and punctuation rather than text contents.

The Great Clock Tower: Time and Narrative in the Late Works of W.B. Yeats
This dissertation is a study of time and narrative in the late works of W.B. Yeats. I argue that, in the early twentieth century, the problem of time was made visible in new ways, as the nature of time, and even the reality of time, became the
subject of debate among physicists and philosophers. The element of narrative is introduced by way of the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. In his study of the ways in which narrative makes productive the aporia between physical and phenomenological time, Ricoeur looked at narrative structure in works by Thomas Mann, Virginia Woolf, and Marcel Proust. This dissertation is an attempt to apply the same approach, close analysis of narrative structures, to the late works of W.B. Yeats.
Yeats?s work is suitable for this type of study because, as described in Chapter 1, he used one of his most ambitious texts, A Vision (1925 and 1937), to re-imagine the secret workings of time. I argue that Yeats was attempting to produce a unified theory that would apply to the small scale of the individual life and the larger scale of human history. As finally revealed, it would be the ?great clock tower?.
In the remaining chapters, I trace some of the ways in which Yeats experimented with narrative form as part of his exploration of temporality. I have deliberately selected texts from different genres because I want to demonstrate the extent to which formal constraint and generic expectation permits or inhibits the evolution of narrative, particularly narrative that tries to depict non-linear time. Accordingly, Chapter 2 is largely concerned with autobiography, Chapter 3 with lyric, and Chapter 4 with stage drama. On the issue of chronology, the selection of texts allows the dissertation to follow its own winding path. Accordingly, Chapter 1 is concerned with texts that appear in 1925 and 1937 respectively. Chapter 2 then jumps back to 1921-1922, with the publication of The Trembling of the Veil. Chapter 3, which is concerned with the poetry of The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair (1933) traces a path between the two Visions. Finally, Chapter 4 moves beyond the second version of A Vision, to the first production of Purgatory on 10 August 1938 at the Abbey Theatre.
In each chapter, I try to bring Yeats?s narrative structures to light, and to demonstrate the extent to which it is possible to trace characteristic techniques and devices, such as, for example, the way in which narrative is reversed or the way in which two separate narratives, moving in opposite directions, might co-exist in a single text. The methodology that I follow is a simple form of structuralism, after the practical example of critics like Frank Kermode, with theoretical support from Jonathan Culler. This approach is joined to close reading, following the example of critics like Helen Vendler and Nicholas Grene. The combination of both approaches has helped me to see where Yeats?s model of time might be embedded at different levels of…

▼ Within the professions, writers are expected to express themselves in certain ways, often within genres that are bound by conventions, including linguistic register. The student entering a profession learns those genres as if they are mandatory and static, and conforming or failing to conform to conventions is believed to have ties to career consequences. However, new members of a profession come to it with other habitual language practices affected—according to previous research—by the writer’s gender. Rhetorical genre theory and disciplinary, professional, and technical communication theory do not offer a full account for the ways in which these old habits and new conventions must interact, and previous research in gender and language does not fully account for how gendered persons write when confronted with high-stakes convention- bound writing tasks. I used tools from statistics and natural language processing (NLP) to assess stylistic features that previous research has associated with gender differences in written language: I applied those tools to texts created by law students near the end of their first year of study in the genre of a court memorandum, and I found there was no pattern of difference between male and female writers in these texts. I propose a “cognitive pragmatic rhetorical” (CPR) theory, grounded in work of Straßheim (2010), who attempted to bridge the relevance philosophy of Alfred Schutz (Schutz, 1964, 1966, 1973) and the Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wilson (1995); I have extended Straßheim’s work with insights from rhetoric and cognitive science. CPR theory explains that these apprentice members of a professional community will expend great effort to conform to its conventions and genres because of the students’ goals and the practical effects that depend on conformity. Consequently, we expect them to abandon gendered linguistic habits, at least while they are engaged in early training. This dissertation demonstrates a methodologically rigorous gender-difference study; offers evidence for an “anti-essentialist” view of gender differences in communication; and gives insight into the process by which apprentice members of a profession may adjust their communicative processes in response to their training. It demonstrates the utility of CPR theory and NLP tools in scholarly inquiries in rhetoric and disciplinary, professional, and technical communication.

▼ In this dissertation I argue that faculty and scholars in rhetoric and composition could improve their pedagogy and scholarship by "reclaiming" the
genre at the heart of composition curricula nationwide: the essay. Why do we need to "reclaim" it if it is already so central? Because the closer we examine the essay historically, in all its glorious suppleness and subjectivity, the less it resembles the essay that writing faculty and scholars teach, write, and valorize in academia today. In chapter one, "W(h)ither the Essay?", I contrast the essay with the article and suggest that the former
genre is antithetical to and superior to the latter. I make the case that the essay enables writers to explore their thoughts and advance an argument simultaneously. I conclude the chapter by focusing on the development of a compelling essay by an undergraduate composition student. In chapter two, "Psychic Distance and a Call for Craft," I examine the reasons rhetoric and composition has neglected expressivism, and I argue that the discipline should focus more attention on issues of craft – particularly psychic distance, a concept that I contend offers a valuable way for writers to think about their prose essayistically. In chapter three, "Toward a Pedagogy of Psychic Distance," I articulate several strategies for teaching psychic distance to composition students. In chapter four, "Shushes and Whispers in the Parlor: Questioning the 'Conversation' Metaphor in Rhetoric and Composition," I make the case that the ubiquitous metaphor of writing as joining an ongoing conversation masks ulterior disciplinary motives that too often go unexamined. In chapter five, "The Importance of Autopsies: The Death of the General-Interest Magazine in Publishing and the Death of the Essay in Academia," I explore parallels between the two deaths and argue that we should mourn the losses of these bygone forms of literacy. Finally, I reflect on the future of the essay and speculate on the pedagogical promise of the multimedia essay.
