▼ Human gait identification has become an active area of research due to increased security requirements. Human gait identification is a potential new tool for identifying individuals beyond traditional methods. The emergence of motion capture techniques provided a chance of high accuracy in identification because completely recorded gait information can be recorded compared with security cameras. The aim of this research was to build a practical method of gait identification and investigate the individual characteristics of gait. For this purpose, a gait identification approach was proposed, identification results were compared by different methods, and several studies about the individual characteristics of gait were performed. This research included the following: (1) a novel, effective set of gait features were proposed; (2) gait signatures were extracted by three different methods: statistical method, principal component analysis, and Fourier expansion method; (3) gait identification results were compared by these different methods; (4) two indicators were proposed to evaluate gait features for identification; (5) novel and clear definitions of gait phases and gait cycle were proposed; (6) gait features were investigated by gait phases; (7) principal component analysis and the fixing root method were used to elucidate which features were used to represent gait and why; (8) gait similarity was investigated; (9) gait attractiveness was investigated. This research proposed an efficient framework for identifying individuals from gait via a novel feature set based on 3D motion capture data. A novel evaluating method of gait signatures for identification was proposed. Three different gait signature extraction methods were applied and compared. The average identification rate was over 93%, with the best result close to 100%. This research also proposed a novel dividing method of gait phases, and the different appearances of gait features in eight gait phases were investigated. This research identified the similarities and asymmetric appearances between left body movement and right body movement in gait based on the proposed gait phase dividing method. This research also initiated an analysing method for gait features extraction by the fixing root method. A prediction model of gait attractiveness was built with reasonable accuracy by principal component analysis and linear regression of natural logarithm of parameters. A systematic relationship was observed between the motions of individual markers and the attractiveness ratings. The lower legs and feet were extracted as features of attractiveness by the fixing root method. As an extension of gait research, human seated motion was also investigated.

▼ Objective: The purpose of this project is to compare simultaneously recorded force
plate (FP) and pressure plate (PP) measurements of sound horses at walk and trot to
investigate whether limb-loading and timing data obtained from a stand-alone pressure
plate system are highly correlated with force plate data. When parameters determined by a
stand-alone pressure plate have an acceptable level of accuracy, they could be used
interchangeable to force plate measurements and a possibility of using the pressure plate
in a clinical setting would be created.
Materials and Methods: Six healthy and clinically sound warm blood horses were
walked and trotted over a running track, containing a build-in pressure plate, mounted on
top of a force plate. For each horse five valid trails were recorded. A trail was considered
valid if a complete print of one of the fore hooves was recorded and the velocity was
within a preset range. For each set of 5 valid trials of both forelimbs, simultaneously
collated FP and PP limb-loading and timing data (mean Peak Vertical Force (PVF),
Vertical Impulse (VI), stance phase duration (ST), time on which the PVF occurs (tPVF)
and forelimb symmetry ratios (SymPVF and SymVI)) are compared. Mixed Model
Analysis of Variance and Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate differences between
FP and PP data for their statistical and clinical relevance.
Results: Significant differences between FP and PP were seen for PVF, tPVF, VI,
SymPVF and SymVI (P < 0,05), but not for ST. However, subsequent Bland-Altman
analysis relativized the statistically significant differences for tPVF and for SymPVF and
SymVI at trot as the Limits of Agreement were still within a range that might not be
clinically relevant.
Conclusion: A pressure plate can be useful for evaluating limb timing variables and
symmetry ratios at trot in a clinical setting, although it cannot be used interchangeably to
a force plate for measuring absolute values of limb loading. Nevertheless, it has important
advantages in terms of practicality to unravel the load-distribution of the different portions
of the hoof during a complete stance phase. With these advantages, it is tempting to
explore the use of this equipment in the near future to quantify equine lameness in a
clinical setting.

▼ Lameness is a major medical concern and results in a large economic impact for both horse owners and the equine industry. In addition, subtle to mild lameness can result in poor performance, which can result in decreased competition winnings. While the subjective lameness examination is the most common tool for lameness evaluation, its sensitivity and repeatability have been shown to be poor, especially for subtle and mild lameness. This has led to the development of objective methods to supplement the subjective lameness examination, including stationary force platform
analysis, optical kinematics, and horse-based inertial sensor systems. Several of these methods have been shown to be sensitive in identifying lameness. However, stationary force platform and optical kinematics are largely confined to experimental settings, are expensive and time-consuming, and require expertise for collecting and analyzing data. Horse-based systems have become widely investigated, as the components are small, light-weight, telemetric, and can be more easily used in a clinical setting. One specific system with poll and pelvis-mounted sensors, allows for real-time identification of asymmetry, which objectively supplements the subjective lameness examination. While this inertial-sensor system has been shown to be sensitive enough to detect subtle lameness at the trot, it cannot accurately detect bilateral forelimb lameness at the trot and has not been investigated for use evaluating other gaits. As previous optical methods have shown that distal limb kinematics are altered with moderate lameness and the hoof is an ideal place to rigidly mount a small sensor, the kinematics of the hoof should also be investigated to determine if mild lameness can also be detected in this manner. Inertial measurement units (IMU) combine a three-dimensional accelerometer, three-dimensional rate gyroscope, three-dimensional magnetometer, and thermostat. By the integration of these signals, these sensors allow determination of linear and angular kinematics in a global coordinate system. IMUs have been investigated for their use in assessing equine locomotion, by attaching them to the body of a horse. However, an IMU has not been previously utilized on the hoof of the horse. As emerging IMUs are small, light-weight, and often wireless, they have appropriate characteristics to measure hoof kinematics and may be a useful method of also objectively determining abnormal hoof kinematics associated with lameness. As optical methods are currently the gold standard for assessing distal limb kinematics, we used these as a standard to which to compare both linear and angular kinematics determined by an IMU. gait. The attractive feature of
gait analysis regards the possibility to study and to quantify the effects on the human motor functions caused by pathologies and lesions relative to the neuromuscular control system and to the musculoskeletal system
Nowadays, the gold standard for the functional evaluation of the human
gait is the
gait analysis laboratory. With the development of wearable technologies, the applications of portable devices for
gait analysis applications have become more and more popular.
In these years, many authors have proposed valuable devices for wearable
gait analysis applications achieving optimum results. The advantage of these solutions is that they can provide real-time sensory feedbacks to the patients thanks to the possibility of embedding small actuators, such as buzzers or vibrating motors. Therefore, the wearable devices can also perform re-training of the patients in order to normalize abnormal walking patterns.
In-toeing is a condition in which the foot points internally during the
gait instead of being parallel to the walking direction. The three main causes that determines this particular disease are: femoral anteversion, metatarsus adductus, and internal tibial torsion. This condition is very popular in children and it tends to vanish with the growth of the child. However, if it is not properly assessed, in-toeing can persist also in the adult stage.
The main existing solutions can be either non-surgical (gate plates, orthodic devices, …) or surgical (tibial osteotomy) and their effectiveness is still debated in the literature. The aim of the project is to develop a wearable device in order to provide a different alternative solution.
Many authors demonstrated that the Foot Progression Angle influences plantar pressure distribution. In-toeing causes a shift of the load toward the lateral part of the foot while out-toeing, on the other end, causes higher medial pressures.
The idea at the base of the development of the device is to renew and redesign a project developed by the authors that consisted in the development of a smart insole for the real-time
gait correction. The insole measured the relative difference of the plantar pressure between the different areas of the foot with force sensing resistors. These signals were collected and processed by a microcontroller that, according to the input information, controls the activation of a haptic feedback unit.
The focus of the activity is to overcome the limitations and constrains of the original prototype. We changed the structure of the device from an insole to a sock. We chose this solution in order to can take advantages of sewing technologies in order to be able to embed the hardware in the fibers of the socks and to obtain a more compact device.

The study of human gait has attracted early interest of researchers, on the one hand due to the complexity and peculiarities that presents and on the other hand because of the significance of the results of these surveys and their application in clinical practice. In the field of biomechanics, many kinematic and dynamic studies of gait have been made , but not to the point where we have a full description and understanding .Several methods have been developed for recording kinematic and kinetic gait data. The most common ones are the use video cameras, forceplates, the conductive corridor, accelerometers, etc. Most of these systems that have been developed are quite complex, requiring specialized knowledge by the user, and the cost and maintenance is quite high.This study is an approach to the design and customization of gait using the opto-electrical method. For the development of this study we built and introduced the gait analysis laboratory housed in the department of Medical Physics of the University of Ioannina , installing the system of two forceplates and a recording system through video machines, for the kinetic and kinematic analysis respectively .A software was also developed aiming to customize the measurement of gait and focus on the utilization and the presentation of the data extracted.The two systems were installed and synchronized so they can operate either independently or together, depending on the requirements of the examination. During the design and development of the software special care was taken so that the experimental data will automatically be stored in a database for future use. Finally, the software has been developed in such way so as to support future expansions or changes of the two systems .

▼ Breeding success in the broiler chicken has been accompanied by gait problems which are detrimental to productivity and welfare. Although these gait issues have not been reported to the same extent in Pekin ducks, there is concern that such problems will manifest if the duck continues on its current selection trajectory. In order to understand how changes in morphology due to selection have affected gait in both species, divergent lines were objectively assessed for gait using a pressure platform (12 birds per line at three, five and seven weeks of age). The broiler chicken was compared to the slower growing layer chicken and the Pekin duck to its slower growing ancestor, the mallard. Two breeding lines of Pekin duck were also assessed. After gait assessment, the leg bones (femur and tibiotarsus) were scanned by computed tomography to measure morphological changes which have occurred due to selection for high growth and meat yield. Results were analysed by ANOVA, accounting for age and sex. During walking, heavy lines walked at a slower velocity, displayed a wider stance and spent more time supporting their mass on both feet than their lighter conspecifics, strategies which are likely to improve balance. The foot angle while walking differed between lines; all duck lines rotated their feet internally whereas the layer chickens’ feet were aligned with the direction of travel. Conversely the broiler chicken rotated its feet externally by seven weeks of age. Morphologically, the main differences were between species. Duck lines reached adult leg size earlier than chickens, which may be a response to differing adaptive environments prior to domestication. This early cessation of bone growth in ducks may provide more opportunity for the bones to remodel to handle the loads imposed on them. Lower levels of porosity and a unique cortical architecture observed in ducks endow relatively greater bone strength. Bone curvature also differed between species; the tibiotarsus curved more laterally in ducks than in chickens and may be a swimming adaptation that hinders locomotion on land in the modern production bird. In order to improve the objectivity of selection for better gait in poultry, the genetic parameters of gait components selected on the basis of results in this thesis were estimated using a linear mixed model in a population of Pekin ducks of known pedigree. As they are a simpler measure, similar or improved heritability estimates were estimated for these gait components when compared with the standard commercial gait score which is based on a subjective view of walking ability. Intense selection for economic traits has altered gait in similar ways in both species. ▼ The portability, ease of use and improved accuracy of miniature inertial sensors brought by current microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology has inspired researchers to develop human movement monitoring system with body-fixed sensors. Although a large number of studies have attempted to explore the use of miniature inertial sensors in estimating walking speed for the past two decades, there still remain some questions regarding applying inertial sensors in estimating walking speed under different walking conditions and for different subject populations. In this thesis, I focus on evaluating and improving the performance of a shank-mounted mounted inertial measurement unit (IMU) based walking speed estimation method. My research can be divided into four parts. The first part was a systematic review regarding the state of the art of current development of the inertial sensor based walking speed estimation method. A total of 16 articles were fully reviewed in terms of sensor specification, sensor attachment location, experimental design and spatial parameter estimation algorithm. In the second part, a comprehensive performance evaluation was conducted, which included the treadmill and overground walking experiments with constraint on the walking speed, stride length and stride frequency. A systematic error was observed in the error analysis of this study, which was adjusted by subtracting the bias by linear regression. In the third part, a post-stroke subject overground walking experiment was carried out with an improved walking speed estimation method that reduced the systematic error caused by previous false initial speed assumption. In addition to walking speed estimation, the gait asymmetry for post-stroke hemiparetic gait was also evaluated with the proposed method. The last part was the sensor error model analysis. We elaborately analyzed and discussed the estimation errors involved in this method in order to completely understand the sensor error compensation in walking speed estimation algorithm design. Two existing sensor error models and one newly developed sensor error model were compared with the treadmill walking experiment, which demonstrated the effect of each sensor error component on the estimation result and the importance of the sensor error model selection.

▼ Symmetry during walking is a valuable attribute as asymmetry has been correlated with an increased fall risk and decreased mobility. Currently, load based symmetry is collected using expensive and immobile devices that are not clinically accessible. As a result, there is a critical need for a system that can objectively measure load and loading symmetry during rehabilitation and everyday tasks in a variety of settings. A new device has been developed (loadsol®) that could potentially fill this need. Before it can be used to assess and treat patients, the loadsol® needed to be assessed for accuracy and reliability in both older and younger adults and at various speeds. Then we needed to determine if the loadsol® can be used to look at the levels of symmetry in patients who have had a knee replacement compared to their healthy peers. Finally, we tested a visual biofeedback intervention with the loadsol® to see if this intervention was able to improve symmetry. We found that the loadsol® is accurate and reliable. Patients with a knee replacement were less symmetric than their age matched peers. Finally, in a small study, the visual biofeedback intervention improved symmetry during walking in a group of people with less than 90% symmetry. Future work is needed to explore the potential of this biofeedback intervention to improve symmetry in various patient populations and to determine the extent to which patients are able to retain these improvements.

▼ Gait is often impaired in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), but detailed
assessment of
gait impairment in research and care remains challenging. In previous
studies the validity and feasibility of visual perceptive computing (VPC) for objective
gait
assessments in PwMS was shown. Among these, the Short Maximum Speed Walk
(SMSW) was introduced, which assesses
gait on very short recording distances.
Objective: To investigate the equivalence of SMSW to rater-based Timed 25-Foot Walk
in a large cohort of PwMS. Additionally, the association of SMSW-derived
gait parameters
with clinical disability as well as subjective
gait impairment should be investigated, in order
to validate the SMSW as a quick and objective measure of clinical relevance possibly
superior to T25FW.
Methods: 95 PwMS and 60 healthy controls (HC) each absolved three measurements of
the SMSW using a VPC system with the Microsoft® Kinect™ in order to establish testretest-
reliability. Both groups also performed the T25FW. In PwMS, disability was rated
according to the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and self-perceived walking
impairment according to the 12-item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS-12).
Results: PwMS showed reduced average speed (p < 0.001) and higher mediolateral
deviation (p = 0.002) during SMSW than HC. Average speed was the most reliable SMSW
parameter in both groups (intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) in PwMS = 0.985, and
in HC = 0.977). Average speed declined with age in PwMS and HC (r in PwMS = -0.648,
and in HC = -0.452, both p < 0.001). Correlation of SMSW average speed and T25FW
speed was high in both groups (r in PwMS = 0.783, and in HC = 0.747, both p < 0.001)
and the mean difference (0.0013 m/s) between both methods was below the smallest
detectable change. Average speed correlated well with both clinical disability based on
EDSS (r = -0.586, p < 0.001) and self-perceived walking impairment based on MSWS-12
(r = -0.546, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: VPC-assessed walking parameters during SMSW can reliably detect
gait
disturbance in PwMS over very short distance. Specifically, maximum
gait speed can be
obtained with high accuracy in this simple test set-up. Associations with disability and
self-perceived walking impairment support clinical relevance. Future research is needed
but given its objectivity in a simple test set-up, SMSW is possibly superior to T25FW.

effects of valgus unloader brace application in participants with
moderate medial compartment knee osteoarthritis during
gait.
Thirty-three individuals were prescribed a valgus unloader brace.
3D knee moments and angles were calculated during walking with and
without the brace. Principal Component
Analysis identified
amplitude and temporal changes of the moment and angle waveforms
during
gait. Three groups were identified based on the change in
knee adduction moment magnitude with brace application. Two-Way
ANOVA tested for differences among groups and conditions in
principal component scores, as well as discrete varus thrust
values. There existed three subgroups of participants identified by
different
gait adaptations to brace application. The brace had
temporal and magnitude effects on 3D kinetics and kinematics for
the participant group. This study showed that the brace does not
provide a consistent change to knee joint mechanics. These results
have implications for brace prescription.

▼ The goal of this research work was to introduce the whole process of developing and validating a 3D lower extremity musculoskeletal model and to test the ability of the model to predict the muscles recruitment of the different muscles involved in human locomotion as well as determining the corresponding forces and moments generated around the different joints in the lower extremity. Therefore the model can be applied in one of the important fields of orthopaedics which is joint replacement; the case study used in such application is the total knee replacement. The knee reaction forces were compared to the pattern obtained by Harrington (1992), where the hip moment components (Flexion/extension, internal/external, and abduction/adduction) were all compared to the patterns obtained from the Hip98 data base. It was shown in the different graphs of joints forces and moments that the model was able to produce very close results when comparing pattern and magnitude to the literature data. Thus, this 3D biomechanical model is sophisticated enough to be used for surgery evaluation such as in total knee replacement, where the damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the surface of the knee joint and replaced with a man-made. The case study of the second part of the research work presented involved the comparison of the
gait pattern between two main knee joint types, Metallic and Allograft knee joints against normal subjects (Control group). A total of fifteen subjects participated in this study, five subjects in each group. It was concluded that based on the study conducted and the statistical evidence obtained that the introduced model can be used for applications that involves joint surgeries such as knee replacement that ultimately can be utilized in surgery evaluation.

▼ Many methods are used for measuring and defining the presence of Parkinson's disease. One important aspect of the disease is gait disturbance, which can be discovered in the early stages of the disease. This disturbance can be measured using three dimensional accelerometers, which are present in the Shimmer device. These devices are light weighted wireless sensor nodes which can be easily mounted on the patient's limbs. Data captured by the device can be streamed to a computer for real-time processing. The Matlab algorithms for step detection are converted to C++ code so they can be used in the EyesWeb environment. Whereas Matlab code can only serve post-processing, the Shimmer's Bluetooth datastream can now be processed in real-time, since the EyesWeb environment supports real-time execution. Hence the Visual Studio environment is needed to design the algorithms into C++ based EyesWeb blocks. This real-time detection algorithm can be applied easily in small and inexpensive lab environments to calculate and obtain the Parkinson's disease severity parameters. Hereby conclusions can be made to prevent the progress of the disease and to treat Parkinson's disorder in early stages.

Not only does this raise animal welfare issues, it also causes significant economic loss from reduced milk yield and fertility. Despite that, prevalence of lameness in dairy farms is high because farmers are unable to dedicate time and labor to identify lame cattle. Many automatic lameness detection solutions have been proposed in literature. Machine vision solutions using cameras are especially attractive because cameras do not require much space and is relatively low cost. However, none of the machine vision solutions so far have been robust enough to be useful to dairy farmers. This thesis attempts to remedy that by applying deep learning methods to the pose estimation of cattle to analyze their gait and detect the presence of lameness. 313 videos of cattle walking were recorded at a dairy farm. Images were randomly extracted from those videos and 17 body parts were manually annotated on the images to fine-tune a deep neural network pretrained on ImageNet. The fine-tuned network is then used to automatically find the trajectories of the 17 body parts in all 313 videos. 84 gait features were extracted from each video based on these trajectories. Each video was also manually given a locomotion score between 1-5 by 2 experts. Due to the small number of locomotion score 5 cows, locomotion score 4 and 5 were merged into one group for analysis. Two experiments were conducted with these gait features and locomotion scores: a) Data analysis to test significant differences between locomotion score groups and b) Automatic locomotion score classification. Data analysis was done using ANOVA followed by Bonferroni correction. Stance time related features were the best at differentiating locomotion score groups, but were unable to differentiate between locomotion score pair 2<>3. Step length related features were also relatively good at differentiating different locomotion score groups, but have trouble differentiating between locomotion score pairs 1<>2 and 2<>3. For the automatic classification, the 84 gait features were first reduced to 3 features using LDA. Then, various classifiers were trained with these 3 features and locomotion score as labels. The linear discriminant classifier achieved the highest classification rate at 85.6%, but this number was heavily skewed by the high classification rate of locomotion score 1 group (95.3%), which also makes up the largest portion of the dataset. To correct this imbalance in the dataset, the prior probabilities were set equal for each locomotion score group and the classifiers were trained again. This resulted in much better classification rates with the linear discriminant classifier for locomotion score 2 and 3 (71% and 84% respectively) at the expense of lowering the classification rate of locomotion score 1 (83.4%).

▼ The purpose of this experiment was to explore if correctively trimming sow claws would beneficially change the manner in which the sow walks. Welfare of the sows is a growing issue within the swine industry, and a major welfare problem is
lameness. In this experiment, sows were walked through a chute pre, one hour post and forty-eight hours post corrective trimming. The gait of each sow was captured using high-speed cameras to record video footage of each side of the sow simultaneously as
she walked through a 2.5 meter recording frame. The data were analyzed using Kinovea kinematics system and analyzed for swing, stance, break over, stride length, two- and three-limb support with comparisons being made between time points. The results
show marked difference between the sow’s gait pre and post corrective trimming for stride duration. The changes allow for a decreases in discomfort and degeneration of the skeletal system.

▼ Traumatic events such as accidents or vascular and circulatory disorders often lead to amputation of the lower limb below the knee joint. The surgery is followed by fitting of a prosthetic device and rehabilitation process to help the individual recover mobility. The recovered
gait of the individual depends to a large extent on his/her health, the amputation technique, and the functional level of the prosthesis. Prior research in amputee
gait has focused mostly on assessing
gait symmetry, movement of the healthy joints, activities of the unaffected muscles, and the metabolic energy consumption in individuals who had undergone traditional amputation. Very little research has been carried out on the performance of individuals with non-traditional amputation procedures designed to maximize the ability of the residual limb to support body weight at the extremity and to maintain the ability of the affected muscles. Moreover, majority of the studies were limited to
gait tests in laboratory environments which restricted the mobility of the individuals.
Current ankle/foot prostheses for people with below-knee amputation are primarily passive devices whose performance cannot be adapted or optimized to meet the requirements of different users. The adverse consequences of wearing poorly functioning prosthetic feet include asymmetric
gait, increased metabolic consumption, limited blood flow, instability, and pain. Over the long term, the amputees, especially ones with diabetes, might have to undergo hip replacement procedure and use wheel-chair on a daily basis.
There exists a high and increasing demand for an advanced prosthetic foot that is comfortable and able to replicate the function of the biological foot. Some of the factors hindering the development and performance validation of such an actively controlled foot are the lack of complete understanding of the
gait, the interaction between the residual limb and the controller, presence of human in the control loop, unknown interaction between the terrain and the foot, and stringent requirements on the mechanical power and rigidity of the foot.
This dissertation aims to address these shortcomings in a systematic fashion in order to develop an intelligent ankle/foot prosthesis system. The following are the key steps in the process adopted in this dissertation.
• First, a
gait monitoring device and algorithms for
gait analysis will be developed to study the
gait of people with below-knee amputation in real time during work-related activities. Experimental protocols are then designed to collect
gait data from individuals with below-knee amputation in order to understand the activity of the residual muscles and the ability of the prosthetic device to support body weight during
gait.
• The dependence of the interfacial socket forces and electromyography signals from the muscles in the residual limb on the type of the
gait and

▼ Gait analysis has been an active area of research in computer vision for a long time. It is also important for rehabilitation science where clinicians explore innovative ways helping to analyze
gait of different people. The traditional ways to study
gait rely on 3D optical motion capture systems which involve the use of cumbersome active/passive markers to be placed on a
subject's body. The attachment of markers to the segments hinder natural patterns of movement and may lead to altered
gait information. Automated
gait analysis has been proposed as a solution to this problem. The aim of automated
gait analysis is to provide information about the
gait parameters and
gait determinants from video without using markers.
Gait is a repetitive, highly constrained and periodic activity. Different
gait determinants are active in different phases of the
gait cycle to minimize the excursion of the body's center of gravity and help produce forward progression with the least expenditure of energy. The motion of limb segments encode information about different phases of
gait cycle. However, estimating the motion of limbs from the videos is challenging since limbs are self occluding and only apparent motion can be observed using the images. To add to the issue, the quality of the recorded video (color contrast, cluttered background) and clothing worn by the
subject can play a significant role in the computation of that apparent motion.

▼ Kinetic gait analysis is used extensively in both human and veterinary medicine, both to detect pathological gait abnormalities and to quantify the efficacy of surgical and pharmacological protocols. This study evaluates the effect of three
different staring distances from the kinetic data collection device (2m, 4m, and 6m) on the peak vertical and associated impulse ground reaction forces generated by the test subjects at a trot. Five dogs weighing between 20 and 30kg were trotted over two
force plates at between 1.6 and 2.1 m/s until 5 right first contacts and 5 left first contacts were collected. Data collection was repeated approximately a week apart for a total of 5 collections. Vertical impulse values were found to be significantly
different (p<0.05) between 2m and 6m, but neither were different from 4m. Peak vertical force was not found to be significantly effected by distance.

▼ O objetivo geral deste estudo foi descrever as principais alterações cinemáticas da marcha em pacientes portadores de paralisia cerebral (PC) do tipo hemiparesia espástica segundo a classificação de WINTERS, GAGE e HICKS, (1987). Para isso foram coletados exames já realizados no laboratório de movimento da Universidade Estadual de Goiás (UEG) no período de janeiro de 2001 a fevereiro de 2005, sendo a amostra composta por 27 crianças, de 5 a 15 anos de idade. Neste estudo também foram analisadas as curvas angulares de amplitude de movimento (ADM) dos pacientes e avaliamos esses movimentos no plano sagital, além de normalizar os parâmetros lineares (cadência, velocidade, comprimento do passo e passada). Para registro desses parâmetros foram utilizados 6 câmeras de infra-vermelho, 1 câmera VHS e o processamento dos parâmetros foi realizado através do sistema VICON PEAK MOTUS 2000. A análise de variância (ANOVA) foi utilizada para comparar os valores absolutos e normalizados dos parâmetros lineares entre os grupos. Os pacientes foram divididos em 4 grupos segundo WINTERS, GAGE e HICKS, (1987). No grupo I, caracterizado pelo tornozelo em eqüino durante a fase de balanço, foram identificados 11 pacientes; o grupo II, 5 pacientes tinham flexão plantar durante todas as fases de apoio e balanço. No grupo III, foi enquadrado 6 pacientes, caracterizados pelo pé em eqüino durante todo o ciclo e joelho em recurvatum, com limitação de flexão; finalmente no grupo IV, 5 pacientes possuíam as mesmas alterações encontradas no grupo III com o agravante da diminuição de ADM do quadril. Três pacientes foram excluídos por não se enquadrarem nessa classificação, contudo possuíam características semelhantes entre si: joelhos fletidos durante a fase de apoio e tornozelo em flexão plantar durante a fase de balanço. As médias de idade dos pacientes enquadrados nos grupos I, II e IV (9,45; 10,6 e 11,4 anos respectivamente) foram correspondentes estatisticamente (? = 0,05 e gl = 10, 4 e 4 respectivamente) às médias descritas no estudo de WINTERS, GAGE e HICKS, (1987). Foram encontradas diferenças significativas (? = 0,05 e gl = 4 e 5) nos grupos II e III quanto à velocidade. Na normalização observamos que os parâmetros lineares ficaram mais homogêneos e sem muitas discrepâncias. A análise de variância (ANOVA) não detectou diferença significativa (?=0,05), entre os grupos (I, II, III, IV) nos parâmetros absolutos e normalizados de forma não dimensional.

▼ This thesis examines using Back Propagation network in the
analysis of equine
gait data. Back Propagation networks are capable of classifying non-linear data sets, but are not usually built to handle time series data. By using Fourier and wavelet transforms as a pre-processor, the Back Propagation network is then able to overcome this hurdle. It was then able to analyze and classify
gait, shoeing and direction in the
gait data quite accurately and effectively. Several methods proved to be more effective than others.

▼ Gait event detection allows for insight into one’s gait pattern, an invaluable aid in rehabilitation. Current methods often rely on measured acceleration and rarely on position measurements [3]–[6]. In this paper we propose 4 novel gait detection methods based on the position of the Center of Mass (one approach being causal and thus suitable for real-time use) and compare them to 4 existing state-of-the-art acceleration- based methods. All algorithms are benchmarked on an existing data set (overground walking, 23 participants, 1772 steps), comparing the detection rate, false positive rate and the mean and (intra- and interparticipant) standard deviation of the timing error for Heel Strikes and Toe-Offs. We show that position-based algorithms give well-balanced results and are able to outperform the acceleration-based algorithms in all five metrics. Additionally, we propose and compare several methods for detecting left and right steps, thereby enabling quantification of the full gait cycle.

▼ Obesity is a highly cited risk factor for knee
osteoarthritis (OA) associated with increased risk of development
of OA and accelerated disease progression. Rates of obesity are
increasing internationally, and while obesity is well established
as a risk factor, the precise role of obesity in knee OA
pathogenesis and progression is not as clearly understood.
Mechanical loading has been implicated as an important factor in
knee OA initiation and progression. The purpose of this thesis was
to further examine the roles of moderate knee OA disease presence
and obesity on knee joint mechanics during
gait, and to
characterize their mechanical interaction. Two methods have been
applied. First, principal component
analysis has been applied to
resultant waveforms from
gait analysis and second, a sagittal plane
joint contact force model has been applied. Using both methods,
statistical differences in biomechanical loading has been
associated with obesity, moderate knee OA, and their
interaction.

▼ Introduction: Walking is one of the most fundamental activities of daily living in humans, when the hip joints transfer power between the lower extremities and the pelvis. Hip osteoarthritis (OA) will more or less influence this function and is increasing in an ageing population. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common treatment for patients diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis when non-surgical treatments have failed. Optical tracking systems (OTS) based on cameras and force plates mounted in the floor have been used since the 1960s. The technique includes attachment of reflective markers with double-adhesive tape to the skin of the patient. Marker positions are recorded when the patient walks through a calibrated measurement volume. Material and methods: In Study I, hip joint movements were measured with two different dynamic motion analysis systems, an optical tracking system and roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) in 16 patients with THA. In Study II, three patient groups were examined to study if the reproducibility of meas-ured values differs depending on whether the hip joint is normal, has developed OA or has been replaced with a THA. The aim of Study III was to investigate the gait in 22 patients operated bilaterally with two different types of stems at the same occasion. In Study IV, 62 patients operated with a Madreporic Lord hip prosthesis between 1979 and 1986 were followed for an average period of 26 years. In Study V, gait analy-sis was performed using two different motion analysis systems, one based on an optical tracking system and one based on accelerometers. Forty-nine THA patients were simultaneously evaluated with both methods. Results: During active hip motions soft-tissue displacements caused an underestimation of the true skeletal motion (Study I). In Study II the hip motions in patients with OA showed inferior repeatability between different investigators compared with THA patients and healthy controls. The gait pattern in the THA patients had not returned to normal one to two years after the operation. Study III showed no differences in speed, step length and frequency, or regarding kinematics or kinetics between short and conventional stems. Although both hip joints were operated during one-stage bilateral THA, there was still a difference between gait patterns two years after surgery compared with controls. In Study IV, the follow-up showed an average HHS of 81 (SD 14) and a pain score of 41 (SD 5), despite that more than half of the patients had undergone a revision of the acetabular cup. Some hips, but not all showed pronounced loss of bone mineral density around the stem. In Study V the accelerometer system measured movements of the pelvis and knee joint that did not differ from the optical system. However, significantly smaller flexion-extension was recorded. Conclusion: This dissertation shows that the deviation from skeletal movements measured using OTS is smallest when measuring hip flexion-extension in patients with THA. ▼ In this thesis, we have explored the use of the latest
motion tracking technologies, as evident by Microsoft Xbox Kinect’s
motion tracking capabilities, in combination with 3D digital human
modeling and animation, multi-modality image capturing and
processing, and fusion, to design a new generation of low-cost
range of motion and
gait analysis solutions that overcome the
limitation of existing tools. The proposed solutions and our
prototype systems have demonstrated accurate measurements and
reliable
analysis outcome compared to current clinic practices,
with significantly reduced complexity and cost. Furthermore, it
eliminates the need for expensive effort for pre- and post-
processing of data, and also the need for a large lab space for
placing the camera array. As a result, it is particularly suitable
for deployment directly at doctor/therapist offices. Without having
to send patient to the motion labs, which could be far away and
expensive in most places, it gives them a tool to quickly and
conveniently capture and access the range of motion and
gait result
for enhanced diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation for joint
problems, e.g., for joint replacement and repair
patients.Specifically, we have developed a touch-free solution for
measuring the joint range of motion in the human body to address
the clinic needs of evidence to support accurate diagnosis,
treatment and rehabilitation for joint problems, and
improvediiiinteraction and among patient, doctor, therapist and
etc. In our approach, we will gather motion data captured through
the motion tracking device Kinect and real- timely process motion
data to obtain range of motion in enhanced accuracy and
reproducibility. We have completed a prototype, which illustrates
our entire work flow. Our preliminary experiment results have shown
our system provides reliable and effective
analysis of range of
motions.We have also started the design and development of a
Kinect-based
gait analysis system to provide a broad range of high
quality body motion
analysis without having to depend on high cost
equipment. We have completed all function components of the
prototype and have use it to demonstrate the correctness,
effectiveness and reliability of such an ultra-low cost solution in
practice. Our preliminary experiments for feasibility study have
shown consistent reproducibility and accuracy.In Summary, we have
developed prototypes for range of motion and
gait analysis, and
have carried out experimental study to show their capabilities. We
believe these new techniques will improve the current practice in
clinical body motion
analysis.

▼ Gait analyses are typically concerned with comparing subjects’ waveform patterns for clinical or experimental reasons; two-mode data matrices (e.g., subjects ×
gait percents) are commonly analyzed by principal component
analysis (PCA). Typical
gait data, however, are measured in more than two modes (e.g., subjects ×
gait percents × joints). If PCA is used for such multi-mode
gait data, the data need to be reorganized into a two-mode matrix, by either taking average over one mode or picking one condition in one mode. The resulting PCA solution will represent only the mean structure or a particular aspect relevant to the chosen condition. Parafac and Parafac2 have been successfully applied to three- and four-mode
gait waveform data. Whereas previous Parafac2 analyses used experimental
gait data, this study presents a successful application
to cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) deficient and healthy canine
gait data that include incomparable
waveforms. Our study focuses on (a) investigating differences and interconnections between the contralateral and ipsilateral limbs of the CCL-deficient dogs; (b) determining the interactions between joints and how they vary over the
gait cycle and by waveforms; and (c) providing clinical diagnostic tools using the
Parafac2 solution. An optimal Parafac2 solution was able to systematically distinguish CCL-deficient dogs from healthy ones, uniquely characterize contralateral and ipsilateral limbs of the CCL-deficient dogs, and understand how the CCL deficiency affects specific joints and influences specific waveforms during specific phases of the
gait cycle.

▼ Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive disease and
a leading cause of morbidity in older adults, resulting in severe
mobility limitations. While the osteoligamentous and neuromuscular
systems are altered in knee OA, little data is available to
illustrate an association among these systems. The objective of
this dissertation was to improve our understanding of how muscle
activation patterns during
gait are altered across the knee OA
severity spectrum and to examine how factors related to the OA
process are associated with these alterations. Three independent
but related studies were conducted. Muscle activation of the medial
and lateral orientations of the gastrocnemii, quadriceps and
hamstrings were recorded during
gait using surface electromyography
for all three studies. Key activation features were identified
using principal component
analysis. First, participants selected
from a large group (n=272) of individuals classified as
asymptomatic, ii) moderate ii) severe knee OA were matched for
walking velocity. Significant amplitude and temporal activation
characteristics were found, supporting that differences among OA
severities exist and were not the result of walking velocity only.
Secondly, individuals with moderate OA were sub-grouped based on
structural severity determined using Kellgren-Lawrence radiographic
scores (II-IV) and were compared to a velocity-matched asymptomatic
group. Medial gastrocnemius, lateral hamstring and quadriceps
amplitudes and temporal patterns were significantly altered by
structural severity where significant activation imbalances between
the lateral:medial gastrocnemii and hamstrings were found with
greater structural impairment (score>II). Thirdly, individuals
with moderate OA were prospectively evaluated and divided into knee
effusion and no effusion groups, based on a positive bulge test. A
significantly higher knee flexion angle during mid-stance, higher
quadriceps amplitudes and prolonged hamstrings amplitudes were
found when effusion was found. These studies showed that muscle
activation patterns during walking were related to i) OA presence
and severity based on functional, symptoms and radiographic
evidence, ii) structural severity and iii) knee joint effusion.
These findings improve our understanding of the interrelationships
between alterations in joint structure and function associated with
knee OA and muscle activation patterns during
gait. These data can
contribute to the development of
gait-based metrics that can
facilitate knee OA diagnosis and monitor progression.

▼ Knee osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease causing
pain and disability in adults. Biomechanical factors including
obesity, abnormal magnitude and load distribution have been cited
to play a role in its initiation and progression with its definite
cause being multi-factorial. Total knee arthroplasty has become the
treatment of choice for knee osteoarthritis and although the
procedure is mostly successful, there are some patients who
experience implant failures which necessitates revision surgery.
Revision surgery is more complicated and thus there is the need to
monitor patients who have undergone TKA so as ensure better
outcomes and also address problems much earlier. Objective methods
like Radiostereometric
Analysis (RSA) has proven to be a good tool
at diagnosing these implant failures. Inducible displacement with
RSA has the potential to serve as a one-time measure to diagnose
implant failures. Previous studies have applied loads to induce
motion to the knee in various ways- squatting, exercising and
weight-bearing on the affected limb. This was not standardized and
caused wide variations in the data. This work looked at refining a
device used to apply standardized loads to the knee resulting in a
more portable and faster way of applying load to the joint.
Gait
analysis is used to assess implant function pre and post surgery.
Some
gait patterns have also been related to implant failure.
Previous works have focussed primarily on associations between
well-working implants (non-revised patients) and these
gait
patterns (adduction moments and flexion angles). This work focussed
on any differences in the
gait patterns between patients who did
not undergo revision surgery and those that did. Although most
parameter differences did not reach statistical differences, they
point to important trends that may explain the causative factors
(adduction moments) whiles others may point to the effects of
disease progression (external rotation).

▼ Gait analysis is an important tool for diagnosing a wide variety of disorders, with its increasingly accepted benefits culminating in the widespread adoption of motion analysis laboratories. A modern analysis laboratory consists of a multicamera marker tracking system for 3D reconstruction of kinematics and multiple high-fidelity load transducers to determine ground reaction force and enable inverse-dynamics forbiomechanics. There is a need for an alternative motion analysis system which does not require a fixed laboratory setting and is lower in cost; freeing the motion capture from the laboratory and reducing the technology costs would enable long-term, home-based,natural monitoring of subjects.This thesis describes two contributions to the end goal of an inexpensive, mobile, insole-based motion analysis laboratory. First is the application of an inertialmeasurement-unit calibration routine and zero-velocity-update algorithm to improve position and orientation tracking. Second is the development, from basic sensor to prototype, of an insole capable of measuring 3 degree-of-freedom ground reaction force.These contributions represent a proof-of-concept that quantitative gait analysis, complete with dynamics, is possible with an insole-based system.

▼ Patient’s functional recovery after Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is often slow. Besides, patients tend to adjust
gait patterns to avoid the pain, a condition referred to as antalgic
gait. The aim of this work is to highlight changes in
gait and muscle activation patterns of patients after total hip arthroplasty, by means of a statistical
gait analysis.
The
gait analysis was performed on 20 patients with unilateral hip prosthesis (3, 6 and 12 months post-operatively) and 20 controls, at self-selected and fast speed. The
analysis was performed using the system Step 32 (DemItalia, Italy). Various statistical analyses were done to compare the outcomes of the two groups. Subjects were examined bilaterally by means of basographic sensors (foot switches), goniometric sensors (in the knee and hip), and surface electromyography of five leg muscles.
This study demonstrated that, for patients, the number of atypical strides is higher and the heel contact phase is extended in time, in both sides. Besides, on the operated leg, despite a significant increase in the hip dynamic range of motion, patients do not reach normal range of motion (ROM) values even one year after the intervention. Furthermore, the electromyographic results show that the number of simpler activations tends to increases and the number of complex activations decreases over the time for THA patients, suggesting a compensations strategy. A recuperação funcional do paciente após a artroplastia total da anca (PTA) é muitas vezes demorada. Além disso, os pacientes tendem a ajustar padrões de marcha de forma a evitar a dor, uma condição referida como marcha antálgica. O objetivo deste trabalho é destacar as alterações na marcha e padrões de ativação muscular dos pacientes após artroplastia total da anca, por meio de uma análise estatística da marcha.
A análise da marcha foi realizada em 20 pacientes com prótese unilateral da anca (3, 6 e 12 meses pós-operatório) e 20 controles, com velocidade auto-selecionada e rápida. A análise foi realizada através do sistema Step 32 (DemItalia, Itália). Várias análises estatísticas foram realizadas para comparar os resultados dos dois grupos. Os indivíduos foram examinados bilateralmente através de sensores basográficos (interruptores de pé), sensores goniométricos (no joelho e anca) e electromiografia de superfície em cinco músculos da perna.
Este estudo demonstrou que, para os pacientes, o número de passos atípicos é maior e a fase de contacto do calcanhar (H) é prolongada, em ambos os lados. Além disso, na perna operada, apesar de ocorrer um aumento significativo na amplitude dinâmica do movimento da anca, os pacientes não atingem valores de amplitude de movimento (ADM) normais, mesmo um ano após a intervenção. Além disso, os resultados electromiográficos mostram que o número de ativações mais simples tendem a aumentar e do número de ativações complexos a diminuir ao longo do tempo para os pacientes submetidos a artroplastia total da anca, sugerindo uma estratégia de compensação.

▼ Variability in the repeated execution of human movements is generally believed to contain key information for understanding the neuromotor system. A data
analysis framework based on the idea of goal equivalent manifold (GEM) has been previously developed to study inter-trial error correction and to predict both the temporal and geometric structure of variability for skilled motor performance. The GEM framework successfully provides a general model-based approach for characterizing the neuromotor dynamic system from experimental data. However, the first-order autoregressive (AR) models adopted by previous studies have never been shown to be adequate. Furthermore, they are incapable of explaining why there is more variability in the performance of older people, especially given the finding that both young and old people share a similar geometrical structure to their variability. In this thesis, we focus on human
gait data introducing higher-order AR model into the GEM framework so that we can look more carefully at the inter-stride dynamics, particularly in regard to the required state space dimension needed to model fluctuations. We use the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria (AIC & BIC) to analyze the distribution of preferred model orders of two age groups. We find that the most probable model orders of two groups are no larger than three, especially, the model orders selected by BIC indicate the first-order AR model could describe the dynamic system well by showing that first and second order models are most frequently picked. For geometric structure, a lower order model is preferred for variability in goal-relevant subspace while a higher order model is preferred in null subspace. By performing permutation test, results of statistical difference between preferred model orders of two age groups do not show consistency between models selected by AIC and BIC, for which we cannot make a firm conclusion and further studies may be required.
